One of the most wonderful times of the year for us is always our Santa’s Workshop, which is coming up this weekend as a part of Dixon’s annual Christmas Walk festivities.

First, we are collecting your gingerbread house for our annual contest

and viewing. These amazing creations will be on display for viewing and voting for your favorites Nov. 28-30 from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. On Friday, Dec. 1, we will be open until 8 p.m. during Christmas Walk. The houses will also be on display during Santa’s Workshop on Saturday morning for voting and viewing until 11 a.m.

The Main event also happens on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m.

From 8 until 10:30 a.m., enjoy breakfast (50 cents/item), and then head upstairs for the Workshop itself. Here our elves will help your little ones pick out gifts priced no higher than $5 (most much less) that

they can give to parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, or other important people in their lives. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be there to listen to Christmas requests and pose for pictures. (Parents, bring your cameras!) We will even wrap the presents, and there will be craft activities as well.

December is also membership season here at LCCOA. Our membership mailing is on its way. Please make sure to renew your membership or, if you are not currently a member, consider joining. Your membership, while not ever necessary to participate in our services, helps defray some of our costs and

ensure we will be here when needed. And the best way to be a member is to join the Ladder Club, our monthly giving opportunity. We are looking for more members to join their neighbors and friends in giving a few dollars each month to LCCOA through withdrawals from their checking or savings accounts. All Ladder Club members receive free tickets to our chili soup supper in the spring, and our summer Luau, so consider joining today.

Weather-wise, I’m not so sure I agree, but I hope, like me and my family, that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are getting ready for Christmas and New Year’s. Though just a little late, I would like to give thanks for our entire family here at Lee County Council on Aging. That includes our great staff who make my job so much easier, our

supporters like you who help us keep providing valuable services to our senior population and, of course, to our clients and visitors who brighten our lives daily by their presence. Thank you!

Benefit changes in Extra Help program Dear Marci, I’m enrolled in the federal Extra Help program.

Will there be changes to my benefits in 2018?

How will I know about them?

– Ava, Huntington, West Virginia Dear Ava, There are several changes that can happen for people with Extra Help, a federal program that helps pay Medicare prescription drug costs, before and during Fall Open Enrollment. If a change is being made to your Extra Help coverage, you will be mailed a notice sometime in September, October, or November. Look out for the colors and titles of these notices to find out if you need to take action to change or

keep your Extra Help benefits.

If you receive an orange notice, you do not need to take action.

This is the “Change in Extra Help Copayments” Notice, and you may receive it sometime in October. This notice explains if the Extra Help copays will change in 2018. Copays usually change a small amount each year. Read this notice to learn how much you will pay for your covered drugs in 2018, and save it for your records.

If you receive a blue notice, you might need to take action. There are two kinds of blue notices, and they are both called Reassignment Notices. The first kind of Reassignment Notice is sent out in October to people whose Medicare

We are selling them cheaper than what you find in the stores. Stop in, and get yours before they are all gone!

Advantage (MA) plans or Part D drug plans are leaving the Medicare program. If you receive this notice, it means that you will be reassigned to a new MA or Part D plan in 2018.

If you want to choose your own plan, you will have to choose it by December 31, 2017. If you do not take action, you will be automatically enrolled in a different plan that may or may not fit your prescription drug needs.

The second kind of blue Reassignment Notice is sent in October to people whose MA or Part D plan premiums have risen above the Extra Help benchmark (the maximum premium amount that Extra Help will cover). If you receive this notice, it means you will be assigned to a new

plan in 2018. If you want to choose your plan, you should do so before December 31, 2017.

Otherwise, you will be automatically enrolled in a new plan.

If you receive a gray notice, you should be prepared to take action, because it means that you could be losing Extra Help or paying more in the coming year. The first kind of gray notice is a “Loss of Deemed Status” Notice.

This notice is sent in September to people who will no longer qualify to get Extra Help in 2018. If you get this notice, but you think it is a mistake (because your income hasn’t changed and/or you’re still below the income and asset limits for Extra Help), you should reapply for Extra Help right

Recently the Dixon Gyro Club presented LCCOA with a check in honor of their longtime member Tom Lawless. Tom was also a great supporter of LCCOA, and served as chairman of the Board of Directors. Gyro member Richard Schilling, along with Tom’s wife, Barb, presented the check to Executive Director Geoff Vanderlin. Have trouble hearing on the cellphone?

Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service that are having trouble hearing on the phone.

The program still provides free amplified telephones and captioning telephones to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing.

Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or audiologist; live in Illinois; and have a service that remits to the program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed from

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at the WCSC. Potential applicants can call the WCSC 815-622-9230, ext.

194, or LCCOA 815-288-9236 in advanced to set up an appointment to see about qualifying for this wonderful program.

Cellphones must be Bluetooth capable. Applicants who wish to apply for this program

should bring in the cellphone.

Please bring a phone bill with all the pages for landline service or cellular service (prepaid cell users that don’t receive a phone bill must bring the cellphone) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with the applicant’s name and address on it).

If you have yet to get your medication list to us and are wanting to check your plan before the deadline of Dec.7, you need to contact us immediately.

Fight Fraud: Guard Your Medicare Card

If you have Medicare, you can protect your

identity and help prevent health care fraud by guarding your Medicare card like you would a credit card.

Identity theft from stolen Medicare Numbers is becoming more common. Medicare is here to help by removing Social Security Numbers from Medicare cards and replacing them with a new, unique number for each person with Medicare. Medicare will mail new Medicare cards with the new numbers between April 2018 and April 2019.

Here are some important steps you can take to protect yourself from the identity theft that can lead to health care fraud: • Don’t share your Medicare Number with anyone who contacts you by telephone, email or in person, unless you’ve given them permission in advance.

Medicare will NEVER contact you (unless you ask us to) for your Medicare Number or other personal information.

• Don’t ever let anyone borrow or pay to use your Medicare Number.

Outreach at WCSC Getting help in Whiteside County The Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) Aging and Disabled resource staff help with a variety of programs for older adults and persons with disabilities. Our walk-in day is on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For Medicare counseling or more detailed assistance, please call us in advance to set up an appointment. Our phone number is 815-622-9230, ext. 194. For our clients in Erie, Fulton, Morrison, and Prophetstown, we will meet with you by appointment on our site days – just call us in advance. We do appreciate a 24-hour notice if you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment.

Monday-Friday. On Mondays, we take walk-ins from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the License Plate Discount Application, LIHEAP, ITAC, and the Senior Tax Assessment Freeze and/or Senior Homestead Exemption. Tuesday-Friday are by appointment only for Medicare counseling or for other more detailed appointments. If you would like an

appointment, please call our department at 815-622-9230, ext. 194. Business hours for the rest of the center remain from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

We are booked for Medicare Part-D Season!

As expected, we are already booked with Medicare Part D appointments for the season! But, don’t fret!! If you were unable to get an appointment with our department and still need to compare drug plans, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE to do your comparison over the phone with a Medicare representative.

When you call, have your Medicare card and list of prescriptions handy. You can also go to medicare.gov to compare online. The Medicare Part D season runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Individuals with Extra Help, a low-income subsidy through Social Security, are able to enroll outside of the Oct. 15-Dec. 7 period.

‘Medicare Choices’ class will return in January!

While we will not be offering our “Medicare Choices” class in December, the class will be back in full swing on Jan. 26, 2018. Please call ahead to sign up!

• Review your Medicare Summary Notice to be sure you and Medicare are being charged only for actual items and services received.

If you’re looking to enroll in a Medicare plan: • Remember there are no “early bird discounts” or “limited time offers.”

LCCOA Giving Tree Due to the state budget, we at Lee County Council on Aging are reaching out to our friends in the community to help us with some needed supplies.

Stop in the Center and see our beautiful revolving tree. Grab an ornament, purchase the item, then drop off the item at the Post House Community Center. We are always in need of stamps, Kleenex, Lysol wipes and labels.

This year, you can participate in this wonderful program by picking up an Angel Tag by Dec. 1 from the Angel Tree at the Whiteside County Senior Center. Donations should be returned to the Salvation Army’s Distribution Site by Dec. 16 or brought to the Senior Center by Dec.15. We thank you for your generosity and kindness in helping others!

Membership Meeting at WCSC Thursday Dec. 7 – 9 a.m.

Come join us for our second meeting! We have big plans for 2018, and would like your input. We will give a brief presentation on ideas we have for the center, and then will ask the group for ideas as it relates to programming.

Christmas Caroling at WCSC Tuesday, Dec. 5 – 1 p.m.

The Salvation Army is going to come and sing Christmas carols for us on Tuersday at 1 p.m. for about a half hour. So, stay after lunch and listen with us. Have a good time at Christmas!

Grief Support Group at PHCC/LCCOA Tuesday, Dec. 5 – 1:30 p.m.

Grief Support Group every first Tuesday of the month at the Post House Community Center. Certified Grief Recovery Specialist Ken Lawson from Unity Hospice can help you look at your old beliefs about dealing with loss, determine which losses have affected your life, and take actions so that you may become complete with your loss. Whether your grief is from death, divorce of a relationship, loss of a career, loss of a faith, or loss of a pet, Ken is here to help you at a safe place. Sauk Computer User Group at WCSC Saturday Dec. 9 – noon Our annual Christmas meeting today. Pizza Ranch will be catering the lunch, and there will be no presentation this month, but there will be fun and games with lots of prizes. Anyone with an interest in computers and technology is invited to attend.

Grieving for the Holidays, presented by Unity Hospice of Western Illinois at PHCC / LCCOA Tuesday, Dec. 12 – 2 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 15 – 10 a.m.

With the holiday season comes stress and mixed emotions. Unity Hospice of Western Illinois is hosting a celebration get together at the Post House Community Center. We are going to celebrate their life and your recovery.

Jack Kromer, Veterans Employment representative, will be available the first Wednesday of every month at the Post House Community Center / Lee County Council on Aging to assist veterans with re-entering the workforce.He will be able to assist with resumes, interviewing and job search. Jack can’t answer questions about unemployment insurance or VA benefits, but he can direct you to a representative who can. If you are a veteran, stop in and see what Jack can help you with.
