After the hard work of fall harvesting, holidays at Primrose Farm in St. Charles take on an especially festive air, and December events showcase the 1930s-era farm at its wintry, seasonal best.

“Our winter activities are designed to help families get in the mood for the holidays without being ‘Santa-centric’,” said Laura Johns, manager of farm programs and interpretive services at Primrose Farm.

Nowhere is that more festively accomplished than through Primrose Farm’s new “Trim the Kitchen” program, taking place from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12.

The farm’s summer kitchen is transformed into a winter wonderland as participants help decorate for the holidays. Popcorn will be strung, pinecones painted and paper ornaments crafted for the tree, while helping hands bake cookies and serve hot cocoa at the kitchen’s woodstove.

“The holidays were a time for establishing great traditions,” Johns said. “Farm families didn’t just get a box of decorations down from the attic. They reused and repurposed things they already had or could find around the farm.”

Primrose Farm in St. Charles will host several programs in December, including a Winter Farm Camp for children ages 7 to 12. sleigh with holiday cheer and be treated to the first ride of the season through the farm’s fields and trails.

For anyone who drives past a farm during the winter months and thinks, “Gee, things look quiet around there,” Primrose Farm’s new “Winter on the Farm” program hopes to dispel such observations. During the afternoon and evening of Sunday, Dec. 27, visitors will get to see just how busy winter farm life

can be. Costumed interpreters will demonstrate various farm tasks, such as caring for livestock, and take guests on a snowshoe hike around the lantern-lit farmyard.

“After being focused on house-related activities during the holidays, this is a great opportunity for families to get outdoors and enjoy spending time together,” Johns said.

Of course, mom and dad probably will have to go back to work between Christmas

and New Year’s, but for kids ages 7 to 12 who are luxuriating in the holiday break, the second annual Winter Farm Camp provides a safe and entertaining way to spend a day or two down on the farm.

Participants will help out with winter farm chores such as tending to the animals and gathering firewood, and will spend time in the kitchen making biscuits and learning about the various domestic projects 1930s’ farm families saved specifically for the winter months.

“For kids who have come out to the farm for summer camps or programs, this Winter [Farm] Camp gives them a chance to reconnect with the farm animals and see firsthand how Primrose Farm changes from season to season,” Johns said.

Spurling said the community feedback is “extremely” helpful.

“On a topic this important, we don’t want to assume what people will be thinking,” he said, noting it also is important to know the reasoning behind the opinions. “It’s all very valuable information.”

Kristin Louis, a parent of a high school freshman and a fifth-grader, is one of more than 700 supporters of a Change.org petition titled “No K-6 in St. Charles, Illinois.”

One of the proposed options calls for the closure of Haines Middle School, moving sixth grade to the elementary schools and retrofitting Thompson Middle School.

Louis said she dislikes the K-6 option because it would result in a shorter school day for sixth-graders and would eliminate such sixth-grader courses as foreign language, choir and Project Lead the Way. “I’m against it for so many reasons,” she said.

One of the most exciting parts about being a fifth-grader is knowing that next year she will move to a new school with lockers, passing periods and, she said, more friends she can meet.

But she said she doesn’t want her school to close, either.

“Lincoln is the best school that there possibly is,” Fiona said. “It feels like a family there.”

Although District 303 is separate from the city government, St. Charles aldermen

have spoken publicly about the potential school closures.

At a recent City Council meeting, 4th Ward Alderman Steve Gaugel encouraged his colleagues to contact the school board. He noted that only five of the district’s 12 elementary schools are in the city limits, and closing Lincoln would bring that number to four.

“It does have an effect on the city,” he said.

Fellow 4th Ward Alderman Jo Krieger attended the council meeting in an orange “Save Lincoln Elementary School” T-shirt. She noted that she and others in her family went to the school.

“I think it’s a valuable asset to the community, and it should survive,” she said.

Other aldermen, including 5th Ward Alderman and Lincoln alumna Maureen Lewis, said they also wanted “Save Lincoln” apparel.

1st Ward Alderman Dan Stellato asked. “Seriously.”

In addition to the shirts, community members are making statements with yard signs

and a parade float.

Earlier this month, parents Emily Andersen Wilson and Jay Mathes submitted forms to enter a “Save Lincoln Elementary School” float in the Saturday, Nov. 28, Electric Christmas Parade, according to a press release.

The release indicates the float will include such signs as “Est. 1928,” “Small school = big community,” and “History. Tradition. Excellence.”

“We wanted to help Lincoln make a big statement to our school board and community,” Wilson said in the release.

Community members, including Louis, have described the process as rushed.

“Why do we have to move so quickly?” she asked.

Schlomann said district personnel have a different perspective as they have been talking about enrollment declines for several years.

“I get people think it’s rushed,” he said. “I also get that, internally, you can only bear this kind of stress on the system for so long before you make a decision.”

ST. CHARLES – After presenting the St. Charles School District 303 facilities options 38 times – including during a string of 15 community meetings that ended Nov. 17 – Superintendent Don Schlomann said he has learned a lot from those passionate about their children’s education.

“The people are extremely polite and articulate about being able to express what they want,” he said, adding he felt there was genuine dialogue.

“Every night was a new set of people with new lenses looking at these things.”

The community soon should know whether efforts to save schools from closing or to keep sixth grade in the middle schools paid off.

The District 303 Board of Education could make a decision as early as Jan. 11, Schlomann said. He said his hope is the board chooses one of the four options – the choices are maintaining the status quo and three scenarios involving the closure of Haines Middle School and Lincoln and Wasco elementary schools – or makes its own option.

The district is looking at options to cut costs in anticipation of getting less state money from Illinois, having the cost of teacher pensions be shifted from the state to the district and the possibility of a property tax freeze.

Board President Steve Spurling said it might come down to debating a couple of options.

“I think most of us have made up our minds what ones we don’t want to do,” he said.

The board will get to ask the administration questions during a special meeting set for 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, Schlomann said. It will be at Wredling Middle School, he said, and will include time for public input and the results of the community feedback solicited online.

“I played in a band for a few years, Chasing 401 in eighth grade and my freshman year.

I was the lead singer.”

Evert said Indiana University hosted a 36-hour dance marathon Oct. 30 as a fundraiser on the campus where he goes to school.

“I believe we were put on this earth for this reason and this is one of my callings. That’s all I’ve ever wanted. Wealth and riches will come with time based on what you want to do.

Making a difference is forever.”

GENEVA – Two Geneva High School graduates wrote a song and are selling it on iTunes and Google Play to raise money for the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Dalton Thompson, 19, wrote the lyrics for “Shoot Like a Star,” and Brandon Evert, 19, wrote and produced the music.

They both sing the song.

Thompson and Evert are 2014 graduates now attending college. Thompson is studying aviation management at Southern Illinois University, and Evert is attending Indiana University, studying to become a dentist.

“This is one of my callings, to help out people in need,” Thompson said. “We are donating every penny we generate from this song for the Riley Hospital for Children. The goal is $20,000. We want to give Riley Hospital for Children a great Christmas present.”

Thompson started a business, Thompson Creations, with four other businesses attached to it. One of them, Louder Records, is the one they use for the song, Thompson said.

It’s a song of encouragement, he said.

“I reach for the sky. I’m ready to fly. Trying to get so far. Trying to get so far. I came to win. Again and again. I always shoot like a star,” are the lyrics to the chorus.

Mooseheart’s Holiday Lights show opens Nov. 27 on campus TRI-CITIES REPUBLICAN editorial@kcchronicle.com MOOSEHEART – After a record-breaking run in 2014, Mooseheart’s Holiday Lights show returns for its sixth annual show after Thanksgiving.

The show will run from 5 to 9 p.m. daily Friday, Nov. 27, through Thursday, Dec. 31, at the Mooseheart campus directly north of Mooseheart Road on Route 31 between North Aurora and Batavia, according to a news release.

The cost to enter the show is $10 a car, with 3-D glasses available for an additional $3, the release stated.

More than 10,000 vehicles drove the 1.8-mile route that winds through the campus and past dozens of illuminated displays in one of the largest holiday light shows in the area, according to a news release. “We have always said it was a family tradition, and I think it’s starting to become just that,� Mooseheart Executive Director Gary Urwiler said in the release. “We’ve seen our

In addition to Santa Claus, the field house also will be a place where children can enjoy a bounce house, crafts, holiday music and Christmas cookies, according to the release. “One of the highlights of the show is when we open the field house [for] Santa,� Urwiler said. “It brings another element to the show. I love to go into the field house and see the children having a good time, doing crafts, enjoying the bounce house or having cookies and hot chocolate.�

As with each previous year, there will be added displays and sights, according to Urwiler. “Changes in the show occur each year, so the show will look fresh and different from the previous year,� Urwiler said in the release. “Our goal is to enhance the show with a percentage of newer displays.�

BATAVIA – The Batavia Public School District 101 Board on Nov. 17 supported having specific details on what having a synthetic turf field would look like at Batavia High School.

The board voted 7-0 in favor of having Wight and Co., the district’s architect, develop a design plan and construction documents that would include a synthetic turf field at the high school.

The school board did not make an actual commitment to install a synthetic turf field.

Instead, board members supported a design plan so they could know exactly how much it would cost to install and maintain the field if enough funding was available.

A total of $56,000 in unused funds from the district’s operations and maintenance budget will be used to pay for the architect’s work, said Tony Inglese, the district’s chief financial officer.

Inglese on Nov. 17 spoke to the school board about the

high school athletic fields at the board’s regular monthly meeting. It was the first time in a year the board has talked about synthetic turf.

Batavia residents in 2014 soundly defeated a referendum to fund a series of district improvements, which included a turf field.

At the start of the meeting, Batavia sports boosters told the board they had $105,000 committed for field improvements and hoped to raise another $200,000.

Board member Chris Lowe was in support of a partnership with the boosters to continue to raise money for the field.

“I think the seven of us really need to get behind it now and make a decision so our community [can get behind] it,” board member Tina Bleakley said.

A synthetic turf field could be used by multiple sports teams and students throughout the day, Batavia High School Athletic Director Dave Andrews said.

The current Bulldog Stadium field at the school has limited use so it does not become heavily damaged, he said.

A dreamy boho bed requires a conscious effort

Nowhere in your house are these two considerations more important than in the bedroom.

Comfort in the bedroom means getting a good night’s sleep, which is why having the right pillow is essential. The style of the bedroom, and of the bed in particular, is equally important not only because you probably spend more time in your bed than anywhere else in your home but also because you will be happier if the bed is a reflection of your own style. I gave my friend the same advice that I give people when they are assembling fabrics for their rooms: In any given space you want a mix of patterns, textures and colors that complement each other but don’t look too matchy.

I always suggest you begin by choosing the boldest, most decorative pattern first. A large-scale floral, damask, tribal textile or embroidery – any of these would work. Whether this item features big or small on the bed - throw pillow, quilt, or sheet – it will be your primary print from which all other selections are made.

Next, layer in a solid or semi-solid fabric. Choose one of the colors from your primary print and find a solid fabric with texture, such as alpaca, velvet, leather, Mongolian lamb, linen or a beaded textile in that hue. This will act as a helpful grounding fabric.

Then pick one or two more complementary patterns in different scales. Again, using your primary pattern as a guide, add a woven ditsy (small-scale print) or any fabric that has a prominent ground (the solid background) and a small, quiet detail. Stripes in a similar palette also work well. Stripes are some of the easiest prints to layer into a print scheme because they are unfussy and easy to read. Just make sure that the stripe isn’t so wide that it fights with your primary pattern.

Once you have all of the pieces assembled, making a bohemian-style bed is easy (which is probably why it is so appealing to teenagers). Layer sheets, blankets and quilts on the bed and then toss the pillows randomly at the head and voilà, the bed is arranged.

Shopping for the right sleeping pillow requires just as much (if not more!) thought and attention. You should focus on a pillow’s density and shape rather than on its stuffing (i.e., down, synthetic, wool, or cotton). It’s the pillow’s density – soft, medium or firm – that is far more critical in keeping your neck straight and supported in bed. To get the right pillow, you need to first consider how you sleep: on your stomach, back or side. The goal is to keep your head and spine in line, so stomach sleepers need the least support, back sleepers need medium support, and side sleepers need the firmest support.

Stomach sleepers do best with a thin, soft pillow that lightly cushions the head at a natural angle. Back sleepers need to bolster their neck, so they should use either a medium-density pillow or a neck/ cylinder shaped pillow. Side sleepers need a firm pillow that fills the gap between the head and bed, thereby easing the stress on the neck and shoulders.

The Washington Post Succulents are having a long moment in the sun.

For the past five years, the adorable and resilient plants have been appearing in Anthropologie catalogs, HGTV specials, wedding crowns and on tables at hip coffee shops and bistros. They’re superstars on Pinterest boards. On Instagram, the hashtag #putasucculentonit became a sensation.

Now they are the subject of a new book, “DIY Succulents: From Placecards to Wreaths, 35+ Ideas for Creative Projects,” by Tawni Daigle, which shows how you can use these low-maintenance, super-cute plants in many ways. There are especially interesting ideas on using hardy succulents as decorations for the upcoming fall and winter holidays.

Daigle, 31, who is one of the authors of the blog Needles + Leaves, fell in love with succulents when she got one as a Mother’s Day gift. Two years ago, she and her sisterin-law started their blog about the many varieties, such as sedum, echeveria and graptopetalum. The appeal lies in their interesting shapes, colors and textures and they don’t require a lot of watering because they store water in their leaves and roots.

Daigle told us a bit about succulents and shared a few photos of DIY holiday ideas from her book. There you can find detailed directions on how to create them.

‘Craft beer and comfort food’ Batavia’s Gammon Coach House prides itself on neighborhood feel and variety

After owning Bistro Thai, which was originally in St. Charles and then in Geneva, with his wife, he saw an opportunity to open a craft beer establishment.

“I felt like people were getting tired of that yellow, fizzy beer that didn’t have much flavor,” With said.

And, thus, Gammon Coach House was born.

Located at 3 S. Batavia Ave. in Batavia, Gammon Coach House celebrated its four-year anniversary in September.

Along with partner Ken Robertson, With joins a knowledgeable staff when it comes to craft beer.

The hours at Gammon Coach House are 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

For those who don’t drink craft beer often – or aren’t familiar with the array of tastes – With said the Gammon Coach House menu and staff are accommodating.

“If you don’t know anything about craft beer, this is a great place for you,” With said. “The staff will give you tastes and samples of different beers, but will also talk with you about which kinds of beers you like. It helps you get more of an idea about what the craft beer movement is all about.”

On Friday, With was noticeably excited about the addition of Goose Island’s Bourbon County Stout – both the 2014 and recently released 2015 versions – at Gammon Coach House.

But the craft beer aficionado, who lives in Elgin, equated craft beer to wine in that “you’re going to choose something that goes well with your meal ... like wine.”

Beyond the vast amount of liquid options at Gammon Coach House, With couldn’t help but praise the restaurant’s burgers, which he said many customers do. Sandwiches, soup, salads, pizzas, appetizers and other items round out the menu.

During his time owning Gammon Coach House, With said he has worked with a number of breweries, including

Penrose Brewing Company in Geneva, to help get their product out to consumers and provide start-up assistance. With did mention that an IPA from Penrose was one that flew off of the shelf – or, in this case, out of the tap – very quickly.

But aside from a love of craft beer, With has always had pride in the main reason for opening Gammon Coach House.

“Our philosophy has always been craft beer and comfort food,” With said.

“But beyond that, this isn’t a place that you’re going to walk into and no one will talk to you or greet you. People engage you here, and it’s really turned into that place with a nice little neighborhood feel that I envisioned from the beginning.”

Requesting a booth, the owner told me he could get one ready in moments, noting the empty booths closest to the door sometimes were affected by a breeze when the weather was cooler.
