GENEVA – Specially designed play houses and dog houses will be built as part of a partnership between Geneva-based Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation and the Northern Illinois Homebuilders Association.

The houses will be built for a raffle that will benefit Changing Children’s World.

Proceeds will fund parenting programs, including those for teen parents.

The foundation works with parents to improve children’s

The houses will be on display at key events in Kane and DuPage counties, including the City of St. Charles RiverFest, Firing up the Fox, the Batavia Block Party and the St. Charles flea market. Tickets are on sale.

SHAW MEDIA GENEVA – Playhouse 38 has a casting call for an adult production of “The Groom Has Cold Feet.”

The casting call will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, through Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Playhouse 38, 524 W. State St., Geneva.

Sixteen roles are available for men and women in the western-themed show. Auditions will consist of a cold reading from the script and, if possible, a short, prepared comedic monologue.

Once cast, a script and registration fee will be required.

Performances are scheduled for Oct. 17 to 19, with the possibility of a second weekend Oct. 23 to 25.

Rehearsals are tentatively set for Tuesday through Thursday evenings. Mandatory tech week is tentatively set for 6:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 12 to 16.

This playhouse will include a wide doorway with a detachable wheelchair ramp, a foldable table inside, a transom window to increase lighting and visibility, cubbies at different heights and an outside chalkboard.

Four playhouses and two dog houses will be showcased at the Northern Illinois Homebuilders Association Cavalcade of Homes at Ashwood Park in Naperville.

Playhouses will be on display from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day through Sunday, Aug. 17,

when raffle drawings will be held for two playhouses – one of them the ADA-compliant – and one of the dog houses.

Changing Children’s Worlds president Kimberly Svevo-Cianci said the houses will be delivered to winners during the week.

“The houses weigh 1,200 to 1,500 pounds with real roof shingles,” Svevo-Cianci said.

“The houses have been constructed by real home builders, so they are mini-houses built to last forever.”

The houses also will be exhibited from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Batavia Block Party by the Batavia RiverWalk on Island Avenue and also at noon, Sunday, Aug. 31, at Roots Aurora at River Edge Park, 360 N. Broadway St., Aurora.

The raffle drawing for the remaining two playhouses and one dog house will be at the Golf and Jazz Evening fundraiser Sunday, Sept. 28, at Cantigny Golf Course, 27W270 Mack Road, Wheaton. Winners need not be present.

Raffle tickets are one for $5, three for $10, seven for $20 and 20 tickets for $50. They will be available at the Cavalcade of Homes; at Changing Children’s World, 411 Stevens St., Geneva; or through the CCWF website, www.changingchildrensworlds.org.

“This whole playhouse project has two goals,” Svevo-Cianci said. “We want to raise money to work with teen parents or incarcerated parents and children with special needs. These programs are not easily funded.”

The second goal is a public awareness and public service campaign to promote empathy-based parents and family relationships, she said.

“Through our playhouse project, we have been able to bring awareness to our empathy-based programs to 5,000 people, and by September, it will be 10,000 people,” Svevo-Cianci said.

The key benefactor from the PlayHouse Project raffle sales is Family Focus Aurora for its Parents Too Soon program, which includes a new initiative for teen dads.

“Our original goal was $20,000,” Svevo-Cianci said.

“We’ve sold about 1,500 tickets and raised $5,000 to $5,500 so far.”

Svevo Cianci said many who buy tickets don’t want a playhouse – so the tickets indicate that if you win, the house can be donated to Family Fo-

“If they win and want to give it to a church or a school, we will completely support them to donate it to an organization,” Svevo-Cianci said.

All the custom-built playhouses are donated by members of the Northern Illinois Home Builders Association.

GENEVA – While the Third Street commuter parking deck is closed for about six months during construction of a third tier, the city will provide free shuttle service to the Metra station at 328 Crescent Place.

The parking deck was closed starting Aug. 4 for construction work to begin – work that will add a third tier to the existing downtown structure.

Once completed, the expanded deck will provide parking for about 540 vehicles.

Free temporary commuter shuttle service and parking is available at the First Baptist Church East Campus, 2300 South St., Geneva, as well as the baseball field parking lot east of the Public Works Department, 1800 South St., Geneva.

Commuters will not be charged to park at the shuttle lots or to ride the shuttle bus during construction, officials said.

“We are thrilled that the long-awaited completion of the commuter parking level is officially beginning,” Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said. “We ask our residents, businesses and commuters to be patient

The expansion project was approved by Metra, the Regional Transit Authority, Illinois Department of Transportation and the City Council.

The deck is being expanded to accommodate parking that will be lost as part of Union Pacific’s plans to add a third rail line, which will remove some existing surface parking spaces.

During construction, the parking deck is closed to vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. The contractor also will be closing the Second Street entrance drive to the structure, removing some on-street parking spots.

Signs have been posted at the Metra station and throughout the area notifying commuters of the construction, according to the city.

Flyers also have been distributed to commuters and business owners about the project.

Six vie for vacancy on library board

“I am somebody who will always has the community’s interest at heart,” McQuillan said.

McQuillan lost a bid for mayor to the incumbent Mayor Kevin Burns in 2013. He also previously lost a bid to serve on the Geneva 304 school board and a primary to State Rep. Kay Hatcher R-Yorkville.

Ploppert, an elementary school teacher in Batavia, said he wants to serve because a strong library is vital to the community.

“It’s something that needs to be strong,” Ploppert said. “Literacy – not just traditional reading and writing – but in technology and how the library helps with e-readers and classes ... to the citizens of the district.”

Ploppert said the library has come to a crossroads when its downtown location may not be able to meet all the district’s needs.

“I have really become passionate about the library as an educator,” Ploppert said. “It’s a tremendous resource, a community center, not a place to just check out books.”

Ploppert lost two bids to be elected as an alderman in the 1st Ward and currently was appointed to the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission.

Bruggeman is the human resources and risk manager for the Batavia Park District.

“As I am a public servant in my profession, serving on the library board is a great way to share my skills and my expertise with my community,” Bruggeman said. “I have always been an avid reader. I’m in a book club for busy moms who love to read. My family loves to walk downtown and visit the library on weekends.”

Ellenbaum said he would like to be considered for the vacancy because he loves libraries and has experience as a library trustee in the 1990s in another district.

GENEVA – In a split vote, aldermen approved an ordinance to issue $2 million to refinance an electrical system alternate bond issue from 2007.

The refinancing will save the city $89,477, said Raphaliata McKenzie of Speer Financial, the city’s bond adviser. It exceeds the target percentage savings of 3 percent and the minimum savings of $75,000.

The savings over the remaining debt is 4.607 percent, she said. It does not add debt, nor does it extend the bond beyond its payoff in 2021.

The negotiated bond sale of the remaining General Obligation Alternate Revenue Bonds, Series 2007 $1.9 million to Robert W. Baird and Company Inc., of Naperville.

Speer’s fee is $42,000 after the city’s savings McKenzie said.

The original loan was for $2.45 million, according to the bond ordinance.

“We had a great sale,” McKenzie said. “It retires in less than seven years [with] almost $90,000 in savings.”

Still, the council voted 3-11 in favor, including a yes vote from Mayor Kevin Burns, after discussion about competitively bidding the bond sale versus negotiating the sale.

Aldermen voting no were 2nd Ward Alderman Don Cummings and 3rd Ward Aldermen Mary Seno and Dean Kilburg.

“We are making a $2 million decision on a bond issue,” Cummings said. “If we were making a $2 million decision on anything else – a truck, a building, road paving, curbs – we would go out for competitive bids ....

Simply because it’s bonds, I don’t think we get to skate on our duty and go with a negotiated issue.”

McKenzie brought comparisons of negotiated and competitive bids in the past month, showing the savings were comparable.

But Cummings did not agree.

“I’m not saying that we got bad numbers from Baird,” Cummings said. “But I am saying we owe it to the taxpayers to go with competitively bid issue, not negotiated ones.”

Color vision deficiency (“color blindness”), an inherited trait, is much more common among boys than it is among girls since the red and green pigment genes involved in color vision are located on the X chromosome. Beyond that, recent research also reveals that color vision deficiency afflicts Caucasian boys at three times the rate of African-American boys. Among children between the ages of 37 and 72 months, 5.6% of Caucasian boys were “color blind” compared with 1.6% of African-American boys. In the same age group, Asian boys had the second highest percentage (3.1%), followed by Hispanic boys (2.6%). The overall prevalence of color vision deficiency is about 2% (59 boys and 4 girls out of the 4,005 children tested).

P.S. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that vision screening for color vision deficiency begin at three years of age.

“I love our library,” Schmid said. “It is truly one of the reasons we moved from Arizona to this community. …. I enjoyed working there the last 13 years and if I can serve in a volunteer effort, I am very wanting to do so.”

Broderick did not return a voicemail message seeking comment.

The vacancy was created when board member Steve Andersson resigned last month to pursue his campaign for state representative in the Nov. 4 general election.

Andersson won the Republican primary March 18 and does not face opposition in the general election.

The board scheduled a closed session for Monday, Aug. 11, to meet with the candidates.

State Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, the Republican candidate for Illinois’ 11th Congressional District seat, has challenged the Democratic incumbent, Bill Foster, for the 11th District to a series of four debates in September.

Senger said in a press release voters in the district should be able to compare the candidates’ records on the crucial issues facing the country.

She listed job growth and fiscal issues within government as probable topics for debate in the release, and she highlighted several honors awarded to her by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business.

The Republican candidate accused Foster of being “unwilling to agree to a debate,” according to the release. In an emailed statement, Senger wrote, “Foster seems to be content to hide in the shadows and hope voters don’t notice he is missing in action.”

Foster’s campaign manager, Craig Belden, wrote in an emailed statement this was the first time Senger’s office had requested a debate and called allegations implying Foster’s refusal to debate “absolutely false.”

So what Soboj and his wife, Christina, try to do with Bulldog’s and their adjacent business, North Island Sandwich Shoppe, is to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack.

“We don’t try to compete with Subway,” Soboj said.

Soboj runs Bulldog’s, located at 32 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia, and his wife owns and operates North Island Sandwich Shoppe. Bulldog’s opened in 2009 and is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month.

North Island Sandwich Shoppe opened in 2011.

One way North Island Sandwich Shoppe tries to set itself apart is through the meats on its deli sandwiches. It serves Boar’s Head luncheon meats.

Soboj said he first was introduced to Boar’s Head by a Bulldog’s employee before North Island Sandwich Shoppe opened. He was instantly sold.

“One bite was all it took,” he said. “I hate luncheon meat, but I will eat this stuff. It is all gluten free and is also approved by the American Heart Association.”

North Aurora resident Peter Scholten was at the North Island Sandwich Shoppe recently picking up a chicken salad sandwich for his wife, Judi.

“She is on a dairy-free, gluten-free diet,” Scholten said.

“Most fast-food places are not providing gluten-free options.”

Scholten is a regular customer at Bulldog’s and North Island Sandwich Shoppe.

“They are not stingy on putting stuff in your sandwich,” he said. “They are reasonably priced.”

North Island Sandwich Shoppe also started serving pizza more than a year ago after a Pizza Hut restaurant closed a couple of doors down from the shop.

“We get a lot of compliments on our pizza,” Soboj said. “We are the only pizzeria that uses Grande cheese. It’s the best mozzarella cheese you can buy.

It’s in a class all by itself.”

North Island Sandwich Shoppe also boasts a number of desserts made by Soboj’s wife, including marshmallow treats, lemon bars and cookies.

Gluten-free cookies also are available.

Bulldog’s Red Hots menu also provides plenty of options, including homemade Italian beef, grilled chicken breast, hot dogs and burgers.

To celebrate its five-year anniversary, the restaurant will sell 99-cent hot dogs from Friday, Aug. 22, to Sunday, Aug. 24.

The name Bulldog’s comes from the mascot name for the Batavia High School athletic teams. The restaurant also is community-minded and supports local teams in various ways.

“We’re also at all the local festivals,” Soboj said. “You try to be as visible as humanly possible.”

While Bulldog’s and North Island Sandwich Shoppe continue to gain customers, Soboj admitted that it’s been a struggle.

“The first year was very challenging,” he said. “We didn’t know if we would make it the first year. For the first year, I didn’t take a paycheck.”

But that hard work has paid off.

“I still work 75 hours a week, but the store is finally on the map now,” Soboj said. “We are well known in Batavia.”

Winemaker spotlight There is a perfect storm of ecological events at Daou Vineyards.

While downtown Paso Robles routinely racks up 100-degree summer days, high elevation allows Daou to stay cool. The vineyard is above the fog and frost lines. In springtime the fruit is safe from any damage, and in the summer it can fully ripen under the intense aspect ratio.

“The elevation is fantastic for temperature,” winemaker Daniel Daou said. “At 96 degrees vines go into survival mode and shut down and stop producing sugar,” Daou said.

“Last summer only five days on the mountain reached 100 degrees, while downtown they routinely reach 100 degrees.”

With 100 percent calcarous clay soil, a vibrant minerality is present in the entire portfolio of Daou wines. Daou never presses fruit because he said he favors the “silky, gentle wellintegrated tannins” of free run juice.

“Making wine from fruit grown in our soil is a pleasure,” said Daou, who has used the only To Kalon and Clone 338 cabernet sauvignon clones in Paso Robles because of the low yields and intense fruit they provide.

“They are unadulterated wines that are a pleasure to make. Paso Robles doesn’t get as much water as Napa or Sonoma, but at high elevation when fronts come in off the Pacific they dump rain on us. Downtown Paso got four inches of rain last year. We got 16 inches. In a normal year we don’t have to irrigate until August. In a wet year we only dry farm. The moisture is there, and the roots can go down and find it.

An intense afternoon sun draped the resplendent Daou Vineyards and Winery in shadows as a cool breeze refreshed patrons passing through the elegant courtyard and tasting room.

At 2,200 feet, Daou is the highest vineyard in Paso Robles, California. The stateof-the-art winery, tasting room and magnificent rotunda sit atop row after row of vines at a steep 40 degree incline.

Stunned by the vista that looked like a painting, I was further impressed by the elegant elevation wines and prowess of winemaker Daniel Daou.

College runners return for 5k

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Mike Bianchina and Andrew Nelson traversed the same Geneva streets and track on which they trained and competed as former Vikings.

Meaghan Ciochon and Kaitlin Frei, recent graduates of a less colloquial kind, experienced the terrain and atmosphere of the Fox River Trail Runners Summer Sunset 5k for the first time.

However runners heard about the finish line they eventually crossed July 30, they all had motives for getting there.

Moments after taking the overall title in 15:32, the 19-year-old Bianchina called the night “a little rust buster” as he prepares for his sophomore cross country and track seasons at Bradley.

In one way or another, didn’t that phrase apply to each of the approximately 500 athletes who participated in the

5k and preceding youth mile, junior jog and toddler trot?

“I did this race going into my sophomore year of high school, and I remember it was really hard. It was like, ‘Oh, this is awful,’ “ Bianchina said.

“Now that I’ve trained more in college, I’ve grown to like it a lot more and am taking it more seriously, doing all the right stuff and eating well and all that stuff that really helps that no one really knows about.”

Nelson, 23, certainly can attest. After completing his collegiate running career at Syracuse last year, he returned home and has been studying with a chiropractor and nutritionist while serving as a Vikings assistant coach.

Twenty-three seconds off Bianchina’s pace, he told the winner, “Way to be, brother,” after finishing second and bolted for the other side of the Burgess Field track. There, several familiar faces, including Vikings girls track coach and cross country assistant

Peter Raak, were harnessing their final kicks. The course weaved through the Gray Street neighborhood around Burgess before the final 300 meters unfolded on the track.

Raak finished seventh in 17:42, 44 seconds ahead of a male counterpart, whose very registration tactic illustrated the upbeat spirit of the night.

A 44-year-old Geneva man listed as Yoda Jedimaster took 13th in 18:36.

“Star Wars” enthusiasts surely would applaud, if only after reporting that Yoda really hails from Dagobah and died around age 900.

The top two female finishers, Ciochon, 22, and Frei, 18, came from slightly closer than a galaxy far, far away. Ciobhan (18:44), who graduated from Judson University in May, lives in her native Elgin and heard about the race through a friend who works at Geneva Running Outfitters.

Frei (18:47), a recent New Trier graduate from Winnet-

ka, credited Google for informing her of the race. A cross country and track recruit at Notre Dame, she felt urgency to follow her coach’s request to compete in a summer 5k before coming to South Bend.

Frei took to the Internet, and the Summer Sunset suited her.

“Very nice course,” she said. “This was fun.”

Ciochon ultimately agreed, although she was at first uncertain of the route when she arrived about 90 minutes before the race’s 7:15 p.m. start time. Luckily, she had pacers to help her along, as well as her husband.

Tim Ciochon doubled as his wife’s cross country coach for her final season at Judson.

They were married about 18 months ago, before he was appointed to the position. They met as Judson athletes.

On Wednesday, the pair ran close by before Tim Ciochon – 10th overall in 18:30 – pulled away in the final stretch at his wife’s behest.

“I just told him to go,” Meaghan Ciochon said. “He had a little more left than I did.”

The youth mile also proved to be a family affair, with the 11-and-over division producing the closest calls. Champion Jaden Ahern of Geneva finished in 6:50, edging brothers Ethan Hipp (6:53) and Lucas Hipp (7:07), also of Geneva.

Lucas Hipp acknowledged times are “usually pretty competitive” between he and his older brother, respective sixth- and seventh-graders at Geneva Middle School North.

Bianchina and Nelson are a few more years apart but still enjoy sporadic workout runs together. While the Summer Sunset included chip timing, music and the witticism of race announcer Todd Busteed, most elements of the July 30 night still felt recreational.

“Andrew’s a great guy. I love racing with him, and I love training with him,” Bianchina said. “He’s always a good training partner to have.”
