50th wedding anniversary party in California in 2000, but they lost touch after both became widows in 2002. Mytinger went to live with her daughter, Paula Dufault, in California, and Fellicelli came to live with her son, Michael, and his wife, Sally, in Geneva.

“She always talks about Bette and memories,” Dufault said of her mother. So Dufault decided the girlfriends should see each other again and brought her mother to visit her friend on a recent weekend.

The girlfriends recalled they went to a lot of dances.

“She was a better dancer,” Fellicelli said, touching

Mytinger’s shoulder. “I just follow her.”

Mytinger attended Waller High School in Chicago; Fellicelli went to a Catholic high school but transferred to Waller when her family could no longer afford it, Dufault wrote in an email.

Mytinger was 15 and Fellicelli was 17 when they met in the same grade. Mytinger had skipped two grades, her daughter said.

They’ve had plenty of experiences throughout the friendship.

Mytinger’s father died when she was 20, and she went to work as a clerk in the Chicago

Finance Office, where payroll checks were issued, she said.

Mytinger married her husband, Leroy, in 1950. He served in the Navy during World War II and stayed in the Navy after the war and was transferred to Newport, R.I., Mytinger said.

Fellicelli never learned to drive.

Mytinger said right after moving to Newport, her husband tossed the keys to a 1950 green Studebaker on the kitchen table.

“He said, ‘Here, you better learn to drive cause I’m leaving tomorrow,’’’ Mytinger said. “I looked in the yellow pages and found someone that was teach-

GENEVA – With a friendship spanning 80 years, the girlfriends were all smiles sitting next to each other in the kitchen of a Geneva home.

“I love her,” said Bette Holsman Fellicelli, 97, touching her friend’s arm. “I just followed her. … We are two pods in one pea. ... We never change; we just love each other.”

Flora Moretti Mytinger, 95, nodded that the feeling was mutual.

“She said she followed me, but notice she did all the talking,” Mytinger said, and they both chuckled. “We enjoyed everything the same. We didn’t argue. We just had fun.”

Mytinger and Fellicelli met when in high school while living in Chicago and became forever friends, they said.

Each woman was in the other’s wedding. And when their husbands also became good friends, they all went on vacations together and visited through the years, they said.

The last time they saw each other was at the Mytingers’

Fellicelli was engaged to her husband, Joseph, for five years while he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

They married in 1945.

Fellicelli’s parents came from Russia. They first lived in California, and then her father left to go to Chicago to look for work but did not come back.

Fellicelli’s mother, who did not speak English, got on a train with their six children and traveled to Chicago to find him. “[My brothers] could speak English, but my mother couldn’t,” Fellicelli said. “And she found him. I don’t know how she did it. He wasn’t trying to run away; he was just trying to get a job.”

Mytinger had four children and has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Fellicelli had 10 children and has 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

County leaders work to balance 2016 budget

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick on Wednesday, July 29, told the Finance and Budget Committee initial requests from the various departments and offices resulted in an overage of about $3.1 million in the general fund.

Committee Chairman John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, said

he looks forward to continuing to refine the budget until it’s balanced. “[We] just need cooperation to get there,” Hoscheit said.

Overall, Onzick said, revenues are projected to remain flat with an increase of only $13,837, or a change of about 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, expenses total about $84.7 million, an increase of about $3.1 million – or 3.88 percent – from fiscal 2015, Onzick said.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said he is proud of the effort everyone is putting into developing the budget.

The budget includes standard payroll and benefits increases and costs tied to mandates and

personnel requests from the State’s Attorney’s Office and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is requesting six new positions, and Sheriff Donald Kramer is requesting 10 new positions.

The Sheriff’s Office has the largest budget increase, Onzick said, showing the amended 2015 budget is about $24.7 million and the submitted 2016 budget is about $27.7 million.

The proposed $3 million increase not only reflects new personnel but also the restoration of the funds the County Board

cut this year to account for the forfeited revenue from the federal inmate program, Onzick said.

Other budget highlights include a $69,000 increase in the coroner’s budget, which exceeds a previous agreement with the County Board, Onzick said.

He said a compliance manager – a position eliminated this year – is built into the coroner’s 2016 budget. The overage could be eliminated by not restoring that position, he said.

Board members seemed to agree.

“The solution’s already on the table,” Lauzen said.

The Batavia-based comedy group will celebrate its fourth year of performing in October.

It debuted in 2011 as “a theater company that didn’t have a theater,” Dryden said.

The group has “contracted and expanded” during its existence, Dryden said. It is comprised of about 10 members, ranging in age from late-20s to mid-50s. The group follows the principles of commedia dell’arte and characterizes itself as “street” and “rebellious” theater, Troupe Strozzi member Scott Purdy said.

Troupe Strozzi set out to break the norms of theater by performing in pubs, but soon realized pub performances didn’t attract an audience, Dryden said.

“People show up to pubs to be loud and drink, not to watch theater,” Dryden said. “I realized that the old adage about

Troupe Strozzi bases its performance schedule off local theaters’ vacant spaces during lulls in the season. The partnership with local theaters has aided the groups’ “exponential” expansion over the years, both locally and regionally, Dryden said.

The troupe is traveling to perform at the Minnesota Fringe Festival in August. After submitting an application, Troupe Strozzi was picked in a lottery to perform in front of 50,000 people. The troupe is making a “major jump” from participating in fringe festivals in Elgin and Chicago, Dryden said.

“We all know people in this business that do it professionally and make a living out of it,” Dryden said. “And in conversations with some of them over the last six, eight months it has been that they were saying, well, ‘Have you done Minnesota [Fringe] yet?,’ like that was the thing. So we’re doing that thing, and then we’ll see where it takes us.”

Local residents can see Troupe Strozzi perform in September at the Elgin Fringe Festival, a celebration of performing arts, visual arts, film and music. Among the entertainment taking over downtown Elgin as part of the event, Troupe Strozzi believes it will stand out among the other performers.

“It’s not just what’s written,” Dryden said. “But what’s on stage.”

Green Fair on Fox promotes environmental education

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Those who attend Green Fair on the Fox on Saturday, Aug. 8, in downtown Batavia will discover how they can be more environmentally friendly.

“It’s an eco-advocacy event,” said Carolyn Burnham, who chairs Green Fair on the Fox. “It’s just a fun way to learn about sustainable living, healthy living and physical fitness in downtown Batavia.”

Green Fair on the Fox will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Batavia Riverwalk, the Peg Bond Center and the Batavia Government Center. Because Houston Street will be under construction, those who attend the event will have to use Island Avenue.

For the second year, an alternative transportation show will be part of the festival. The show will feature hybrid, electric and other alternatively fueled vehicles. Burnham said the show was extremely popular last year.

“People loved it,” Burnham said. “When we did our surveys after the event, that was one of the favorite things that people liked about the event.”

Burnham also is a member of the Batavia Environmental Commission. She said Green Fair on the Fox is an outgrowth of the commission’s efforts.

This year, the Batavia Bicycle Commission will host a bicycle show for the public. It will feature innovative bikes.

The girlfriends pointed out parallels in their lives. Fellicelli is blind in her right eye since birth, and Mytinger now is blind in her left eye, the result of a bad cataract surgery and macular degeneration.

Both of their husbands were World War II veterans. Both were married more than 50 years – Mytinger for 52 years and Fellicelli for 56 years. Both women have lost a son.

Turtles, lizards, snakes and other reptiles will be on display at Green Fair on the Fox as part of the Chicago Herpetological Society’s exhibit.

People will be able to view the reptiles as well as touch them, Burnham said.

“I think that when people understand the natural environment, they’re more likely to protect it,” Burnham said.

The event also will feature a free Zumba class at 9:30 a.m.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

There will be live entertainment starting at 11:30 a.m. on the Peg Bond Center stage.

Because of Houston Street construction, Burnham urged those who attend to walk or bike to the event. There will be limited parking, she said.

Batavia MainStreet is partnering with the Batavia Park District, city of Batavia and the Batavia Environmental Commission to present the festival.

This is the eighth year of the event, which previously was called the Batavia Green Walk. The event was renamed Green Fair on the Fox last year.

The girlfriends recently began writing to each other and pledged to keep it up after Mytinger returns to California.

Reflecting on their long friendship, the women said they care deeply for each other.

“It’s just being honest with each other – that’s important,” Mytinger said. “And you have to like the same things.”

“Ours is the best,” Fellicelli said. “It’s a gift from God. ...

We might never see each other again, but I know I’ve seen her now.”

An “I [apple symbol] Blue Goose Market” sign is displayed in the front yard of a home on St. Charles’ west side. and on June 30 he wrote an impassioned Facebook post about how he left his corporate job in 2012 to come back to the store and improve things. The market was established in 1928 by Lencioni’s great-grandmother.

The market offers produce from local growers and partners with local groups and charities, sells food at reason-

able prices and supports its neighbors, Lencioni said.

“We need friends to help us fight hard for a better world, and we need organizations who believe that who we are and what we do matters,” Lencioni wrote in the post.

The post went viral with many current and past patrons of the store leaving supportive comments, including Laura Macklin-Purdy, the business development representative at the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce.

Macklin-Purdy had her 16-year-old son, Jack, an employee of the store, pick up one of the market’s yard signs to put in front of their home.

“I think we need to support our local economy and local stores,” Macklin-Purdy said.

ST. CHARLES – A call this summer to relaunch a yard sign campaign resulted in 155 Facebook likes, 508 shares and plenty of love for a longtime St. Charles business.

The yard sign in the campaign says, “I [apple symbol] Blue Goose Market,” with the apple shaped like a heart. The signs continue to sprout up all over the Tri-Cities to draw attention to the market, 300 S. Second St., St. Charles.

Hundreds of signs have been picked up from the store this summer, said Paul Lencioni, president of the market.

“I love it – I’m honored, and I’m grateful,” Lencioni said of the support for the campaign.

“It’s like throwing a party and everyone shows up.”

He restarted the campaign when a child told Lencioni’s 6-year-old daughter, Raine, that nobody likes Blue Goose Market while Raine was at a summer camp.

Lencioni said Raine handled the comment maturely,

Turf Room receives third Award of Excellence for wine Wine Spectator magazine honors North Aurora restaurant

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Parker Grabowski, owner of The Turf Room restaurant in North Aurora, is happiest when he sees a glass of wine at each table in his restaurant.

Customers at The Turf Room, located at 1033 Kilbery St. in North Aurora, have plenty of wine to choose from. The restaurant has a selection of more than 600 different wines, including 64 wines that are available by the glass. The Turf Room’s specialty is Napa cabernets.

“We probably have close to over 250 cabernets from Napa Valley alone,” Grabowski said. “That’s our little forte we like to do. It matches our food at the restaurant. It’s American eclectic food.”

Once again, the restaurant has earned an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine, which bills itself as the world’s leading authority on wine.

This is the third year The Turf Room has received an Award of Excellence from the magazine after previously receiving the award in 2012 and 2013. The restaurant did not enter last year.

“We were just trying to expand it for a year, really build it, and then apply the next year,” Grabowski said.

The Award of Excellence honors those restaurants that “offer a well-chosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style,” according to the magazine.

The Turf Room and Wildwood restaurant in Geneva were the only restaurants in the area honored this year with a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

There are three levels to the magazine’s wine awards. The “two glass” award is the Best of Award of Excellence.

The top award is the “three glass” award, or Grand Award. The Turf Room currently is at the “one glass” level.

and that’s our goal, to get up to that level,” said Grabowski.

Grabowski travels to Napa Valley twice a year to try wines. He believes The Turf Room has one of the most extensive wine lists of any restaurant in Illinois.

“There’s probably only a half-dozen places that have more wines than us,” he said. “We let our customers try a lot of variety of wines that they’ve never heard of, or even been able to try before. We have a lot of wines that are $20 or $25 a glass that are really nice premium wines.”

Grabowski owns Gastronomy Rooms Inc., which operates The Turf Room along with The Saddle Room in Hoffman Estates and The News Room in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Saddle Room also received an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator this year.

By February of next year, Gastronomy Rooms hopes to open its latest restaurant, Hardware, which will be located at the northwest corner of Orchard Road and Oak Street in North Aurora. The gastropub will have a brewery inside of it, Grabowski said.

The hops for the microbrewery will be grown on a two-acre farm outside of the restaurant.

“We will be completely sustainable on our hops probably within two to three years,” he said.

The wheat that is leftover from the brewing process will then be dried and put into breads, pastries and dog bones, Grabowski said. In addition, the building will also house a greenhouse, where herbs, microgreens, tomatoes and lettuce will be grown for the restaurant.

The restaurant will be making as much food as it can, including hot dogs and sausages, as well as curing its own bacon. Bee colonies will pollinate the fruit trees and gardens on the property, he said.

“We’re trying to grow and create as much as we can ourselves, and then use everything we can and not waste anything,” Grabowski said. “You got to use it all.”

The building itself will be constructed out of recycled materials, Grabowski said. A cistern will collect rainwater, which will then be used to water the

greenhouse and the hop gardens.

The restaurant’s name is a reflection of all of the work being put into the effort.

“We’re working much harder to produce our wares,” Grabowski said.

“You can go buy bacon from somebody.

You can go buy sausage from somebody.

We’re doing it all ourselves.”

Once demand exceeds a certain threshold, Grabowski said he plans to construct a separate microbrewery on land adjacent to the restaurant.

North Aurora Village Administrator Steve Bosco said he is excited about the proposed restaurant and believes it will help boost the economic vitality of that corridor.

“Parker obviously does a great job with The Turf Room,” Bosco said.

The rapid change can really affect delicate shoots and underdeveloped clusters in their yields and how they grow.”

A sudden heat spike right after wineries thinned their canopies in 2010 was disastrous for some in Napa Valley. It looked like a third straight cool vintage, but the 70-degree temperatures that were prevalent throughout August changed abruptly on Aug. 25.

A three-day heat spike brought 100-degree temperatures and panic throughout the valley.

Yet because Montelena opened its canopy conservatively, its vintage survived and made a wine that in a few years will really thrive.

“It’s a real testament to our winemaking team and vineyard manager that have seen this type of weather pattern before,” Crafton said.

Montelena CEO Bo Barrett, whose family purchased the winery in 1972, called the 2011 the best chardonnay Montelena ever made. Crawfton thought the fruit was amazing at harvest.

“There was no variability in fruit,” he said. “The different rows and blocks all seemed

Construction for an additional 1,500 square feet of space is currently underway, making room for a lounge-like, special-events space that also will see wine and savory small plates served.

“We are expanding this time because I wanted to add another section to offer the people a different experience,” said owner and executive chef Alain Roby. “It’s a totally dif-

The room will serve as a special-events space for showers and banquets and also will be where Roby conducts Chocolate 101 presentations, which consist of a 60- to 90-minute wine and chocolate-truffle

pairing and PowerPoint presentation led by Roby. The presentation explores the history of the cacao bean and delves into the nuances of chocolate, how its made and why it has been called the “Food of the Gods.”

On weekends, the space will transform into a wine and

dessert lounge that can seat 25 to 30 people. Dessert flights, charcuterie, cheese boards and small plates – such as crab and avocado sliders – will be served alongside an array of wine, including varietals from Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park.

“What I am trying to do is use local products, local wine.

And they are certainly one of the best, if not the best, local wine,” said Roby.

As a Guinness World-Record holder for his chocolate-art pursuits, Roby will use the new space to showcase his latest creation: a 21-foot tall chocolate rig that will consistently pump 300 pounds of

white chocolate.

“People are going to be able to enjoy all of these goodies and see this chocolate rig pumping chocolate right in front of their eyes,” Roby said.

“I can’t wait for people to see this baby running.”

With hopes of a grand opening in time for Festival of the Vine in September, Roby said that the unveiling of the new space could be closer to the dates surrounding the Geneva Christmas Walk or Valentine’s Day. “I think it’s going to be a fun place, especially with the holidays coming up now,” Roby said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

At 10 years, Crafton said the Montelena Chardonnay starts to hit its peak. Of the six-bottles tasted, I thought the 2006 showed best upon opening.

“At release it didn’t have this depth and complexity,” said Crafton, who has been working at Montelena for nine years and was named winemaker in 2014. “We think this is what all these wines will turn into – at different points in their evolution, certain pieces – maybe the fruit, aromatics or acidity – dominate. Over time they come into an incredible balance and equilibrium that all seem to hit at the 10-year point.”

There is a very full, round mouth feel. The spice imparted by the oak has peeled away its layers, and in its place is a nutty, Gruyère aged-cheese aroma. There are green peach and snappy red apple flavors.

So good is the Montelena property that even in 2008, a cooler vintage where frost hit during flowering, the wine still showed incredibly well. Baker remembers the exact dates of the frost because they were his first at the winery.

“April 21 and 22 of 2008 is the famous frost,” Baker said. “The

The Chateau Montelena winemaker more than makes up for it in the three months leading up to harvest. Grapes have to taste good before the call is made to bring in fruit from the vineyard. The Montelena staff will go as far as making sure 98 of 100 grapes tasted meet their established criteria.

With a history that dates back to 1888, when the chateau was constructed, Montelena is America’s version of a Grand Cru. Monumental events like the 1976 Judgment of Paris, a blind tasting when the 1973 Montelena Chardonnay claimed first place, announced to the world the United States was making outstanding wines.

During an early-July visit, Montelena proudly displayed its historic achievements. Bottles of the 1973 chardonnay and tasting notes from the iconic event are behind glass cases.

But, Montelena isn’t satisfied to rest on its achievements.

On a recent Thursday, Crafton and Brian Baker, vice president of sales and marketing, hosted Montelena Live.

The duo had a vertical tasting of Montelena Chardonnay from 2006 to 2011. As a guest on the show, I was treated to chardonnay from an American icon. Like the winery itself, the chardonnay stood the test of time and many bottles had yet to hit their peak.
