He said he tries to educate customers on what they are looking for and what type of bicycle will meet their need. He said this is what sets him apart from the shops with “shiny floors and big glass walls.”

“The ma-and-pa shops cared about you. … It’s the kind of shop that was cool, when I started racing,” Giannini said.

Giannini said the ma-andpa structure and relaxed atmosphere at his shop allows him to run the business on his own terms and makes him and – he hopes – customers comfortable.

He said it was the kind of shop that members of his generation went to when they needed reliable service or products.

He still gets in around 100 miles a week on the bicycle, Giannini said, grinning at his artificial knees. With an artificial shoulder and titanium plates in his face to match, Giannini said his long-term goal was to stay healthy and avoid crashing.

“I don’t see myself doing this at 80, but – you know – I said that when I was 55 about retiring at 60 years old,” Giannini said.

In 1985, Giannini opened his shop in the same building that he resides in now, which he bought in 1976 for $130,000.

He said his plan was to become a Ducati dealer in order to get discounts on motorbike parts.

As for selling bicycles, “I was tricked into it,” Giannini said chuckling.

Giannini inquired about getting a few personal bicycles from one his of motorbike distributors. The distributor also gave him 10 bicycles that he could choose to sell or return after three months.

With the addition of the Fox River bicycle trail fostering bicycle appreciation and increase in demand, Giannini sold 30 bicycles in 90 days. From then on, he changed his business plan, and he now sells bicycles from Fuji, Raleigh and KHS. Giannini said he enjoys working on bicycles and teaching people about how they work. He also said he buys older models and sells them at competitive prices, saying “that’s the niche I have found

GENEVA– Elis Giannini recently looked up sadly from his lawn chair and stared in the direction of State Street. He said Geneva used to be full of ma-and-pa shops.

“You didn’t refer to the store by its name, but rather the owner,” Giannini explained. “Oh, we’re going to the Danielson’s or the Scoglin’s,” he said with heavy nostalgia in his gruff voice.

“I’ve been on this … corner all my life,” Giannini said, referring to his bicycle shop, Geneva Cycle, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next April.

Giannini and his bicycle shop, located at 12 E. State St., represent a generation that, according to Giannini, was less intoxicated with the desire for instant gratification than today’s society. The 74-yearold works by himself and only opens his shop for about 25 hours a week. He said a lot of his bicycles are not made, gesturing to a back room packed with boxes waiting to be assembled. Giannini said if he does not have a customer’s size or model built, he will work into the morning to complete the bicycle. But he said tomorrow is sometimes not soon enough for today’s customers.

However, the Geneva native did not always sell bicycles to Tri-City-area and other customers. Giannini got his business background selling motorbikes.

At 17, Giannini moved to Cambridge, Mass., to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Giannini’s interest in motorbikes grew after his friends and he spent hours riding a Harley Hummer over dirt construction hills near a new dorm the college was building, he said.

After flunking out and moving to a New Hampshire school, he discovered ice racing, he said.

“I heard this ‘braaap’ ‘braaap,’ and they were having an ice race on the [bloody] lake!” Giannini said. “I saw all those New Hampshire farmers racing around, and I thought, ‘I can do that.’”

GENEVA – The Geneva Beautification Committee is recruiting gardeners of all ages to join in the final planting of the season.

New volunteers should report at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, to the corner of South Third and James streets, in front of the Geneva Post Office, to be assigned a garden location.

Volunteers already assigned to a garden can report directly to their garden and begin planting flowers that have been delivered to their area.

Volunteers are asked to bring garden gloves, pruning shears, rakes, brooms, shovels and trowels. Planting will continue unless there is a thunderstorm. If rain delays

the planting, the rain date is set for 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31.

Park District offers opportunities to play Once again, we’re back to school. Geneva School District 304 has begun its 2014-15 school year. And this year also marks the first time kindergarteners will attend a full day of school. While many students are excited to reconnect with peers and take on the new and exciting challenges of the upcoming year, making the transition from the lazy, hazy days of summer to a six-hour school day can be tough.

But Geneva residents truly made the most of their summer this year by soaking up the sun at our local parks and facilities. Last month, we celebrated National Park and Recreation Month by playing outside every day in July. We danced along the Fox River banks with live music at Island Park, splashed around at the Moore Park Spray Ground and discovered wildlife down at the Ralph Dantino Teaching Dock on Peck Lake.

Chris Walk funds training with grant THE REPUBLICANS ST. CHARLES – A local heroin abuse prevention group this month provided funds for police training with a $25,000 grant it received, according to a news release.

Chris Walk Against Substance Abuse received the grant from the Aurora-based Dunham Fund, which is a philanthropic organization that provides financial support to qualifying organizations devoted to education, enterprise and community development.

The grant was used to bring the Desert Snow Criminal Interdiction Training Program from Aug. 13 to 15 to 42 local and state officers at the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, according to the release. Desert Snow, LLC has conducted intense and relevant criminal and terrorist apprehension training since 1989.

Desert Snow is a primary trainer of the United States Customs and Border Patrol

and is internationally recognized as a leader in the education and networking of local police officers, state law enforcement and federal agents, the release said.

The United States Border Patrol Campo Station Abatement Team reported the seizure of $20,000, as well as multiple seizures totaling 258 pounds of drugs with a total estimated value of over $2.3 million, after two weeks of applying tactics from a Desert Storm training, according to the release.

Chris Walk Against Substance Abuse is a nonprofit namesake cause in memory of St. Charles resident Chris Foley, who died of a heroin overdose in 2007. His mother, Vicki Foley, is president of Chris Walk and a Shaw Media employee.

GENEVA – Illinois adopted the Common Core State Standards in 2010, but educators, parents and school officials are still wary of what it means for their students, according to a roundtable discussion Aug. 25 hosted by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield.

New Illinois State Learning Standards Incorporating the Common Core establishes new standards for math and English language arts; provides consistent learning expectations for students; and provides higher, clearer, deeper, real-life learning for college and career.

Forty-three states, the District of Columbia, four territories and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the Common Core Standards, according to www. corestandards.org.

“Several states have slowed it down,” Hultgren said of the Common Core standards being implemented. “I think it’s an important thing

to talk about. I also wanted to see how we could work together … and help facilitate conversations of what is working well, what’s not … and how to achieve the goal all of us have: the best possible education for our kids.”

Those participating in the 90-minute roundtable discussion were Pam Reilly, a second-grade teacher from Sandwich who was 2013 Illinois Teacher of the Year; Kane County Regional Superintendent Patricia Dal Santo; Waubonsee Community College President Christine Sobek; St. Charles School District 303 Board president Steven Spurling and member Judith McConnell; and two St. Charles mothers: Michelle Pollard, a homeschool parent of five, and Joyce Palignoff, a parent of three.

“The Common Core is not a curriculum; it’s standards and you design your curriculum to meet those standards,” Dal Santo said.

to the next level, Dal Santo said. Each school district decides how to accomplish those standards, adopting textbooks to help accomplish that.

An opponent of Common Core, McConnell said Shakespeare was the only English author included in the standards.

“It’s frightening,” McConnell said.

But Del Santo said the standards do not stop a school district from adopting a curriculum that includes other English authors.

Reilly said as she has traveled Illinois, teachers are concerned with how the student assessment will be done when they will be judged on the outcome.

“I feel like the conversation needs to continue,” Reilly said. “In second grade, I know the destination they need before they move to a thirdgrade classroom. Common Core gives me the autonomy to teach those skills. Some districts are getting there in a Cadillac and others [in a car] with three wheels and no gas but are expected to reach the same destination.”

Pollard said it will take at least three years to get some success from implementing the standards, and she felt sorry for students who will be caught in the shuffle.

McConnell said the only way to fight it is for superintendents to band together and refuse to implement it.

“It is scary to me,” McConnell said. “And it’s an outrage.”

Batavia author makes fiction come to life W. Ward Neuman has penned successful action tales

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The true life story of hijackers who robbed a busload of tourists in Guatemala provided the inspiration for Batavia resident W. Ward Neuman’s first venture into writing a novel.

His sister was among those tourists on the bus.

Kane County reporter Eric Schelkopf spoke to Neuman about his book “Seeking Justice,” which revolves around three millionaires who decide to use their energy, determination, and resources to help others solve the problems and injustices that “the system” cannot.

leaned back and said, ‘Wow, I did it.’

Then I got it published and I started getting feedback from people.

Some people thought the book should be made into a movie. A couple of people said they couldn’t put it down. A lot of people said it should be a television series.

And many, many people asked when there was going to be a sequel. I kind of left a couple of things hanging in the book, which gave me room to do something I wasn’t planning to do.

I wrote the second one, and I realized I was having fun. My publisher asked me to write a third book (“Delivering Justice”) since the other ones had done well, and now I have done three.

The big question now is do I do a fourth or not? At the moment, I’m saying I don’t think so, but that could change.

Eric Schelkopf: Your first book was based on an actual incident involving your sister.

W. Ward Neuman: Well, it’s kind of a funny thing. She got over it. She was never actually traumatized.

She was more angry and saddened at the loss of her things of value. I was the one who got really upset about it, thinking that people exist who can go out and do that. And apparently, they were doing it again and again.

And obviously with corruption and graft and bribes, they were getting away with it. It stayed in my mind for a long time and then I started writing about it. And it was like a catharsis.

Schelkopf: Was this an idea that you had even before this incident?

Neuman: No. I had been an author before. I had written three non-fiction books in my field of investing in real estate.

I was in demand at seminars and conventions and investment clubs. And after being successful at writing those three books, I had the idea of writing fiction.

The thing about most fiction is that there is generally one story – the hero is going after a bad guy and it takes the whole book to unravel the plot and get to the end, where he gets his just

My books are different, because there’s seven or eight situations or adventures in each book, where my guys hear about different people not receiving justice from the system after they’ve been wronged in different ways.

So, there’s lot of stories contained in the book, each time leading up to a grand finale of a great big story.

Schelkopf: And then you wrote a sequel, “Finding Justice.” How did that come about?

Neuman: I finished the book, and I

Schelkopf: Why do you think the books have connected so well with people?

Neuman: Well, I can’t say that I’m a brilliant writer like Ernest Hemingway. He had a flair and a way with words.

But I make the plots interesting and I make the characters believable. A couple of the nicest compliments I have had from people is when they say, ‘It may be fiction, but it sure seems real.’

And that’s a really nice compliment to an author.

ST. CHARLES – Kane County has no shortage of Mexican restaurants, but you should make room for one of the latest offerings on St. Charles’ west side.

Salsa Verde Mexican Restaurant & Taquería, 1850 Lincoln Highway, St. Charles, offers authentic Mexican food and a fun, colorful atmosphere.

The restaurant immediately sets the tone for its diners with the bright lime green exterior of its building. On the inside, you’ll find all of the traditional Mexican restaurant staples, along with a salsa bar that includes eight different choices prepared daily.

A group of friends and I decided to dine in during a recent August lunch hour. We were greeted to the sounds of the Dominican Republic guitar music known as bachata, an impressive color picture menu board and one of the courteous owners, who was manning a cash register.

While we waited a few minutes for our orders to come out, we snacked on great-tasting chips and a hearty mild salsa.

We also sampled some of the salsa bar, including the one the restaurant is named for. Don’t let the creamy texture of the green salsa – “salsa verde” in Spanish – fool you, it is quite spicy and you will only need a smidgen of it to give your dishes a kick.

Speaking of dishes, I skipped the standard carne asada and instead ordered the Carne a la Mexicana after the owner recommended it. This meant my skirt steak would be served with grilled vegetables, red sauce and cheese.

The steak was tender and the sauce, cheese and veggies added layer upon layer of flavor to my lunch. The standard sides of refried beans and authentic red rice did not disappoint either. It was well worth the extra $2.50 over the $9.49 carne asada.

Eric Schelkopf: How have people been responding to your new songs on the tour?

Jennifer Nettles: Overall, the response for the new album and the whole project has been really, really positive.

It is an opportunity to sort of redefine and recreate myself, and reintroduce myself musically, which is super fun.

It’s been great to go and play venues that support sort of the nuance and the intimacy of this album. And I’ve been having a blast doing it, so it’s good.

Schelkopf: You talked about the album being more intimate. Would you say this is

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Rivers about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: For people who come out to the show, what should they expect? Are you kind of going through the hits and then some?

Johnny Rivers: Well, you know, you always have to play the hits. But we always put in a lot of cuts from various albums, and I do a little acoustic set in the middle of the show.

It should be fun. We have some new arrangements on some of the old hits. It’s just a four-piece band – guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. It’s really kind of fun, because it’s just the basic rhythm section.

Schelkopf: But you like being just a four-piece?

Rivers: Well, it’s real comfortable for me. And I’m the guy who played guitar on most of those old records anyhow, so it’s easy for me.

Schelkopf: At age 15, you met disc jockey Alan Freed, known for coining the phrase “rock ‘n’ roll,” who convinced you to change your last name.

Rivers: On my first record,

I was using my family name, Ramistella. Back in those days, it wasn’t cool to have a long ethnic name. Everybody had shortened their name. He asked me where I grew up, and I told him Baton Rouge, which is on the Mississippi River.

He says, ‘Why don’t we call you Johnny River?’ It became Rivers. But my dad didn’t like it. He wanted me to keep the family name. He really didn’t care for it until I had my first big hit.

Schelkopf: And I’m sure you will be playing “Secret Agent Man” at the Arcada.

Rivers: I have young guitar players come up to me who have said they learned guitar playing “Secret Agent Man,” including Eddie Van Halen.

That’s a pretty good compliment. But I also played the guitar on all those other records, “Memphis” and “Seventh Son” and “Mountain Of Love.” I came up with some interesting guitar riffs that were recognizable, especially the openings.

Schelkopf: Out of all your accomplishments, is there anything you are most proud of?

Rivers: Just everything. I’m proud of what I’ve done. I’ve worked with a lot of other artists. I was one of the guys who put together the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and performed on it the first night along with Simon & Garfunkel. That was the first music festival. After that, they did Woodstock and started doing festivals everywhere. But it was nice to be part of that first one, which went off without a hitch. No one got arrested, no one died and no one went to jail.

St. Charles North girls tennis doubles options intriguing

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North girls tennis coach Eve Tubman jokes that she “likes to send her lineup into the blender every so often.”

Whatever the mixing and matching churns out in the upper half of her doubles lineup, Tubman is confident the final product should serve the North Stars well.

North’s season was scheduled to begin Aug. 26 with a match at Metea Valley. Consider the first few weeks open auditions for spots in Tubman’s lineup, where some combination of senior Lianne Anderson and juniors Brittany Rohrsen, Emma Spellman and Morgan Rerko are likely to compose what projects as the team’s overall strength – No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Three of the four were big pieces for North last season, with Rerko’s sophomore season marred by a wrist injury.

“They really all have some great, different skills,” Tubman said. “Emma has a big serve and some big groundstrokes. Brittany’s like a workhorse and just is very steady. Lianne has a huge backhand and is very competitive. And Morgan has such great footwork.

“And I want the girls to have fun, but I want them to take care of business first, so personalities are going to come into that.”

Anderson and Rerko both have substantial histories playing alongside Rohrsen. Anderson and Rohrsen played No. 1 doubles together for much of last season and would like to play with Rohrsen again – or at least somebody who possesses many of her qualities.

“We had a lot of long matches that were pretty close last year, and she’s the one that energizes me mostly, and I need someone like that,” said Anderson, hunting her

first IHSA State Tournament berth as a senior. “Also someone with a strong forehand because I like my backhand a lot better.”

Rerko’s history with Rohrsen extends further back.

“We played together freshman year on varsity, and we won conference for 4 doubles and we just play really well together,” Rerko said. “Unfortunately last year I couldn’t play with her because of my wrist, but I’m hoping to play with her or Emma Spellman in doubles and if not, I can also see myself playing singles. But doubles is my go-to.”

Rerko’s return to form is one of the top causes for optimism that North could be more competitive this fall with Tri-Cities powers Batavia and Geneva, plus rival St. Charles East.

A soccer injury resulted in broken bones in Rerko’s left wrist that sidelined her for most of last tennis season.

When she returned in the season’s final weeks, she was wearing a brace that made her less comfortable, and her confidence was shaken.

“I would always be so scared to hit anything,” Rerko said. “I just felt mentally weak and physically weak.

But that’s changed over the past year.”

Even if North excels at 1 and 2 doubles as Tubman envisions, more points will be needed to score team victories. Sarah Oshana and Mackenzie Solomon should be part of the doubles depth solution as North grooms several new singles prospects. Finding wins at the lower end of the singles and doubles spectrums loom large.

“I think our goal at least is to make all the doubles slots pretty strong this year and then work on our singles players so next year they have some experience behind them that will help them later,” Anderson said.

If you like baseball, you’ve probably watched the World Series on television. But did you know that Little League Baseball also has a world series? It’s played every August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Little League Baseball was created.

This year, the sport is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

By the end of the 19th century, baseball was known as America’s pastime, but there were few opportunities for children to play organized games. That’s when Carl Stotz of Williamsport stepped in.

Stotz often played ball with his young nephews, and in 1938 decided to organize a program for them as a way to teach them about sportsmanship and teamwork. There were just three teams in the early years, but the sport quickly grew, and by the 1950s, there were teams all over the U.S. as well as other countries. Today, more than 200,000 teams in 80 countries play Little League.

The rules have changed a bit in 75 years. Little League used to be for 11- and 12-yearold boys only, but today, 13-year-olds are allowed in certain circumstances.

Girls are allowed, too. This year, Mo’ne Davis from Philadelphia made a splash when she took the mound in the Little League World Series as the 18th girl to play in the series and the first female pitcher to throw a shutout, which means the opposing team did not score any runs against her team.
