By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – In many ways, it only makes sense recent Geneva High School graduate Claire Scatterday and recent Batavia High School graduate Lia Kruse are best friends. Scatterday and Kruse were born in Fuzhou in Jiangxi Province, China, just three weeks apart and were both adopted Sept. 15, 1997, when they were 1 ½ years old. They also shared a crib while they were living in an orphanage in China and have grown up only a few miles from each other. “It is kind of a miracle,” Scatterday said. “We were meant to always be together and be best friends. We knew each other before we knew our parents.” But for the first time in their lives, Scatterday and Kruse soon will be going their separate ways. Scatterday will

be going to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., after having graduated from Geneva High School, and Kruse will be going to Greenville College in Illinois after graduating from Batavia High School. Even though they will be going to different colleges, they said they intend to keep in touch with each other. “We will probably see each other on break,” Kruse said. “We won’t let our friendship fade.” Scatterday agreed. “I’ll probably visit her, and she will visit me,” Scatterday said. “We grew up being best friends. Why would we let that go?” They both attend First Baptist Church of Geneva and last year went on a mission trip together to Ecuador, where they built bridges and hosted a Vacation Bible School for the children of nearby towns.

“It’s really cool,” Kruse said. “We go to the same church and always see each other.” Because they look somewhat alike, they say they are often mistaken for being related. “People always ask us if we are sisters,” Scatterday said. “Some people think we are twins.” They also share a love for sports, with Scatterday being a Viking gymnast and Kruse a Bulldog runner. But in some ways, they are totally different from each other. For example, Scatterday is quick to point out Kruse enjoys shopping for clothes but Scatterday doesn’t. “We’re mirror opposites,” Scatterday said. Scatterday said she knows the two of them will remain close even after they go away to college. She is studying to be a physical therapist assistant. Kruse wants to become a teacher.

“We thought we would be separated for life when we were adopted,” Scatterday said. Their adoption also brought together the Scatterday and Kruse families. The two families got to know each other through the adoption process, and they traveled to China together to the orphanage where Claire and Lia lived. “We met each other through a moms group that our adoption agency encouraged us to be a part of,” said Martha Scatterday, Claire’s mother. Diana Kruse, Lia’s mother, said that Claire and Lia’s special bond was “divinely ordained.” “There is no other explanation,” she said. Martha Scatterday and Diana Kruse also maintain a strong friendship. “We’re BFF,” Diana Kruse said. “We just went on spring break together in Florida.”

ECC gets safety enhancement grant the Illinois School and Campus Safety Grant Program earlier this year. ECC was awarded $186,641.62 to fund two projects, the release stated. The first project is the purchase of five additional STARCOM radios, which ensure interoperable communication between the ECC Police Department and its mutual aid fire and police partners. The other

project is the purchase and installation of shatter-resistant glass and film in strategic locations throughout the campus. Tami Haukedahl, ECC’s deputy chief of police, said ECC “has a well-earned reputation for being among the safest campuses in the state and country,” according to the release. These security enhance-

ments will greatly benefit the safety of all ECC students, faculty, staff, administrators and visitors, Haukedahl said, according to the release. Gov. Pat Quinn recently announced grant awards totaling $25 million to enhance security at public elementary and secondary school districts, community colleges and state universities in Illinois.

CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Standing in a classroom of empty desks with educational posters plastered to the walls, Kane County Board member Deborah Allan on May 22 asked the teacher how he deals with kids who don’t want to be there. “Are the kids willing to try?” asked Allan, D-Elgin. Her question wasn’t prompted by the teacher’s subject – math – but by the type of students he works with: juveniles in custody for pending court proceedings. Allan, along with other members of the Public Service Committee, was touring the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles Township. The center – which is on the same campus as the Kane County Judicial Center and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office – is a detention facility for ages 10 to 17. Ivars Spalis, the education program coordinator for the facility’s school program, guided the committee through the center’s seemingly identical corridors, which had doorways to a library, computer lab, gym and, among other rooms, living quarters. About 60 juveniles were in custody May 22, Spalis said, noting youth come from such counties as DuPage, DeKalb and Kendall in addition to Kane. The average stay is 12 days, he said, but some might stay much longer. Days are broken into six 40-minute class periods, Spalis said, but the center is in the process of shifting the schedule to six 50-minute periods so that the youths get the same amount of class time as public school students. There are four classroom teachers, whose students are grouped by security rather than by grade, Spalis said. County Board members expressed appreciation for what the teachers do. “To walk into a situation like this has got to be difficult,” said Becky Gillam, R-West Dundee. “I think it’s commendable.” The Juvenile Justice Center is seeking volunteers to help in the library and tutor students. GENEVA – Greta Wimberger said she knew she wanted to do her best in the May 25 Multisport Madness Triathlon Team Triathlon Festival. “The support from my team and the people who came out to watch kept me going,” said the 8-year-old Sugar Grove resident. Cadence Fitness and Health Center in Geneva hosted the event, now in its 14th year. With a time of 17 minutes, 30 seconds, Greta finished first in her age group in the triathlon’s junior division. As part of the triathlon, Greta competed in a 125-meter swim, a 2-mile bicycle ride and a halfmile run. She said she enjoyed bicycling the best. “It wasn’t too hard, and it wasn’t too easy,” Greta said. “You got to go on a hill rather than being on flat ground.” Her 6-year-old brother, Peter Wimberger, also participated. He also said he liked the bicycling portion of the triathlon the best.

“It’s my favorite,” he said. He was eating a granola bar to get his strength back, saying the event “was tiring.” Their mother, Teri Wimberger, said she was appreciative of the support that the spectators provided. “Everybody cheers everybody on,” she said. Sunny skies provided perfect weather conditions for the race. “We lucked out,” said race director John Lorenz, who also serves as the team director. “We couldn’t have asked for a better day.” More than 150 kids participated in this year’s youth triathlon, exposing them to what being a triathlon athlete is about. Lorenz said that was ideal for organizers. “For us, it’s about getting kids into the sport,” Lorenz said. In addition, the USA Triathlon recently selected this year’s event to include a mixed team relay super sprint series race, allowing adults to compete in the race as well. “Instead of just being kids, you have parents competing

ust as the Nobel Prize marks excellence in achievement, the owners of the Nobel House hope their restaurant represents excellence in food and service. Geneva residents Jason Levin and Dave Cilio on May 1 opened Nobel House restaurant at 305 W. State St. in downtown Geneva in the space formerly occupied by another restaurant, Tavolino. The name of the restaurant also pays homage to Geneva’s Swedish roots. Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prize, was a Swedish chemist and engineer. The bistro-style restaurant offers chef-inspired American comfort food. “You can have great food without white tablecloths,” said Nobel House executive chef Marshall McCarty, who has worked in the restaurant business for 12 years. Levin and Cilio have extensive restaurant experience. They also operate four other restaurants in Chicago, including Merkle’s Bar and Grill in Wrigleyville in Chicago. McCarty started working for Levin and Cilio while he was going through culinary school. They extensively renovated the building’s interior to achieve the look they wanted. For example, they tore out the building’s ceiling to expose the wooden timbers underneath. “We saw these beefy, old wooden timbers that we liked,” Cilio said. “It gives it an old, rustic look.” Nobel House prides itself on its freshness. “We cook everything from scratch,” McCarty said. “We are proud to say we don’t bring in frozen products.” Nobel House also smokes its own meats.

“It takes it from something that was tough into something that is tender,” McCarty said. One of the restaurant’s popular items is a turkey pastrami that is smoked for hours and piled high on marble rye, McCarty said. Nobel House also serves other sandwiches and burgers, along with wild salmon, salads and soup. In addition, Nobel House offers vegetarian options, such as its cauliflower steak, which features a roasted cauliflower with olive tapenade, sun-dried tomato and citrus vinaigrette. “A lot of people are looking for something like that,” McCarty said. For those beer connoisseurs, Nobel House also offers a wide beer selection. The restaurant has 30 craft beers on tap, and another 70 craft beers by the bottle, McCarty said. McCarty knows how popular craft beer is these days. “People want to have a large variety,” he said. “Barbecue and craft beer go great together.” Nobel House also serves beer mussels made with Penrose Brewing Proto Gradus, just one of the beers made at the newly opened Penrose Brewery in Geneva. Besides the items on its menu, Nobel House also features an ever-changing array of items on the “Market Chalkboard” displayed at the end of the restaurant’s bar, including oysters, cheese and charcuterie, flatbreads and soups of the day. “We want to keep it fresh,” McCarty said. “Our flatbreads change almost daily.” Even though it has been open for

Winemaker spotlight Fruit was important for Cederquist. He quickly rattled off all the fruit flavors he finds pleasing in chardonnay. Yet, with 20 percent new oak, Matchbook offered a hint of oak. “It’s a nice in-between,” Cederquist said. “I like the spicy notes new oak can impart. But I love the melon, apple and pineapple characteristics of chardonnay. We don’t need too much oak. I like the fruit components. They are important. I want a vibrant, fresh, lively feel.” Matchbook has loads of fruit up front and finishes with an oak spice and creme brûlée creaminess. It’s a challenge to get the mix right for Cederquist, just as it’s a daily task during the growing season to manage the vineyard. Harvest takes place two to three weeks earlier than cooler climate areas like the Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley or

A developed canopy is cut only on one side, which shields the fruit from the oppressive sun. “It’s warmer and there is more sun,” said Cederquist about the Matchbook vineyards in the Dunnigan Hills. “I was familiar with cooler climate chardonnay from the Russian River Valley. But the fruit just does so well here. We get high pH and low acid, which results in rich chardonnay, and we’ve embraced that.”

And what a spot for the Saints to do so. East triumphed in a drawnout IHSA Class 3A Conant Sectional semifinal battle May 27 to defeat top-seeded St. Charles North 2-1 in what is believed to be East’s first win in the rivalry series since the first year after St. Charles High School split. The Saints have had a few close calls – including settling for a tie after leading North most of the way during this year’s regular-season meeting – but the Saints finally solved their crosstown nemesis. East senior Shannon Rasmussen said the Saints of the past would arrive at North matchups early and “make it a huge deal.” “This year we decided to take it like a regular game,” Rasmussen said. “We didn’t get pumped up or anything. We just decided to stay confident, act like it’s a normal game and go out there and do our thing instead of worrying about who we’re playing. It was about us instead of them this year, and I think that’s what helped us a lot.” The fourth-seeded Saints (16-4-2) advance to face the winner of the May 28 Geneva-Conant sectional semifinal Friday, May 30.
