BATAVIA – The Kane County Audubon Society has planned a bird walk for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Nelson Lake/Dick Young Forest Preserve, 39W115 Main St., Batavia.

Steve writes about his battle with ALS in his book, “Shells: Sustained by Grace within the Tempest,” which was published last year. He also writes a blog at www. steveheronemus.com.

There is a meaning behind the name of his book. A portion of the proceeds from sales will benefit the Les Turner ALS Foundation.

“You can sometimes speak of someone with ALS as be-

ing locked in a shell,” he said.

“I’ve turned this around and use sea shells as metaphors for ways to have purpose and meaning in life, and opening up to experience grace.”

Being confined to a wheelchair, Steve has encountered obstacles in trying to get around the city. Steve and Suzanne are working to make the city more handicapped accessible.

“After not being able to speak for nearly a year, this technology made me feel like I walked out of a cave,” he said.

“I could fully participate in family and community life.”

His wife also is thankful for the opportunities the technology provides him.

“We don’t have a cure. But until we have a cure, we have technology, and technology has to kind of be our cure for now,” Suzanne said. “Technology

She said they plan to talk to Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath about steps that could be taken to make the city more handicapped accessible, such as repairing sidewalks and making sure sidewalks are connected.

The couple also might put on a community event, such as a wheelchair obstacle course, so people better understand the obstacles those with disabilities face, Suzanne Heronemus said.

Even though technology has given Steve the power to speak and write, it hasn’t restored everything. For instance, he is no longer able to play the piano or the French horn.

“For me, the biggest challenge or loss has been the inability to hold and hug my wife and children, and the inability to play my musical instruments,” he said.

BATAVIA – Lou Gehrig’s disease has robbed Batavia resident Steve Heronemus of his ability to walk and speak, but he does not see himself as a victim.

“I spend much time supporting and encouraging people to live with the disease rather than feeling like they are dying of it,” the 55-year-old said through a speech-generating device. “I see myself as an advocate working on the behalf of others.”

He has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a progressive, degenerative disease of the nervous system. He has had the disease since 2003, said his wife, Suzanne.

The disease has left Steve confined to a wheelchair.

There is no cure or treatment that halts or reverses ALS, according to the nonprofit ALS Association. About 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year, according to the association.

Because the disease has taken his ability to talk, he speaks through a speech-generating device, similar to one used by physicist and scientist Stephen Hawking, who also has ALS. The device is controlled through his eye movement, since Steve no longer can use a mouse.

The city has information on its website and a YouTube video link of the Humane Society’s instructions on hazing coyotes. It also will post a video of Dasher’s training.

From January through March, coyotes have pups, and April through September is pup-raising season, Dasher said. Because adult coyotes need to bring in extra food for their pups, this is the time of year people are reporting attacks on smaller pets.

A coyote should run away when it encounters a person, and – if it doesn’t – it has lost its fear of people, Dasher said.

“Hazing is a way of changing the problematic behavior of coyotes,” Dasher said.

The acronym for proper hazing is SMART: Stop, don’t make sudden moves; Make yourself look big; Announce yourself by making noise; Retreat by slowly backing up; Tell an adult.

Part of the statewide kite fly supported by the Illinois Association of Park Districts, this day of family fun also helps St. Charles celebrate the Year of the Scarecrow.

The first 50 participants will receive a free paper kite kit supplied by Chicagokite.com that can be decorated. The sky’s the limit when it comes to creativity, but kite-fliers are encouraged to stay grounded and choose a scarecrow-related theme. All the necessary decorating supplies and assembly materials will be supplied by the park district.

Kite flying is a simple and easy outdoor activity, requiring very little in the way of athletic prowess or skills – just the ability to run or walk fast enough to help launch the kite and the strength to hold on as it goes airborne. BATAVIA – Former teacher and principal Sam Rotolo is being remembered as someone who knew all of his students and showed them respect.

Rotolo of Geneva and formerly of Batavia passed away March 29. He was 89.

Rotolo taught physical education and science at Louise White Elementary School in Batavia, later becoming the school’s principal in 1956. In 1966, he became the first principal of Batavia Junior High School. The Batavia Public Library is located on the site of the former junior high school.

He retired from Batavia School District 101 in 1989 and was later honored when the Batavia Middle School was renamed the Sam Rotolo Middle School of Batavia.

Rotolo was principal of the Louise White school when Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke was a student there.

“He had a far-reaching impact on a number of people,” Schielke said. “He was a singular force of progress and goodness for this town.”

Schielke said he enjoyed the science classes Rotolo taught, saying he learned about such things as the elements of electricity through his classes.

“He taught us some stuff that you weren’t getting otherwise,” Schielke said. “Not only was he the principal, but he also never stopped being the teacher.”

In addition, Rotolo taught swimming classes at Quarry Beach in Batavia, Schielke said.

“Probably there was a life or two saved at some time because they had been subjected to Sam Rotolo’s swimming classes at the quarry,” Schielke said. “Of course, the quarry was this big, open invitation for every kid in town at that point in time to learn how to swim because that was one of the things that was available for kids to do in Batavia.”

Batavia 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff was a student at Batavia Junior High School when Rotolo was principal.

“The biggest thing he taught me was that you really garner respect by giving it,” Wolff said. “He led by example. I don’t think I ever heard him say a negative thing about somebody. He was always very positive and always very encouraging.”

Rotolo also knew the names of all of his students, even years after they graduated, Wolff said. The two of them stayed in touch throughout the years.

“Even 20 years later, you would run into him and he would remember you,” Wolff said. “He was always kind of an inspirational guy. He always saw the good things in people.”

Visitation was March 31 at Moss Family Funeral Home in Batavia.

Funeral and interment services will be private. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence.

The multicolored logo was revealed in front of more than 100 people during a branding launch and logo release party at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.

The logo includes silhouettes of city landmarks, such as the St. Charles Municipal Building tower, the Arcada Theatre marquee and the Main Street Bridge.

“I think it’s great – very colorful, very modern and family-friendly,” said Shannon Stone, a business education teacher at St. Charles East High School who attended the party.

The signals with the new arrows might be in place for many weeks before they are activated, Zulkowski said. He noted the changeover likely will happen in batches.

Additionally, 17 intersections will have traffic signal heads placed for each lane of traffic. For example, Zulkowski said, an intersection with two left-turn lanes, two through lanes and one dedicated right-turn lane would have five signal heads on the mast arm.

The affected intersections are as follows: Fabyan Parkway, Glen Eagle Road, Christina Lane, Fargo Road, Keslinger Road/Kaneville Road, Williamsburg Road, Bircher Road, Route 38, Prairie Street, Oak Street, Route 64, Dean Street, Red Haw Lane/ Oakcrest Circle, Crane Road, Red Gate Road, Bolcum Road/ Ridgewood Drive and Silver Glen Road.

Signal heads also will have backplates, so motorists can better see the signals, Zulkowski said.

The improvements won’t be limited to traffic signals. Zulkowski said eight speed-limit signs that also monitor drivers’ speeds will be added along Randall Road, primarily north of Route 64.

Studies have shown that such driver-feedback signs reduce accidents, Zulkowski said. Motorists who see the signs generally slow down, he said, and those who drive slower are less likely to get into accidents because they have more time to react to situations on the road.

Buttermilk Cafe ‘not the average breakfast place’ Geneva restaurant opened to the public this week

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Pete Kostopoulos and Spiro Kouvelis believe that fresh buttermilk biscuits are the perfect way to start the day.

Buttermilk biscuits are just one of the items on the menu at the new Buttermilk Cafe, located at 7 W. State St. in downtown Geneva. Kostopoulos and Kouvelis own the restaurant, which serves breakfast and lunch. Buttermilk Cafe opened its doors to the public March 30.

Kostopoulos and Kouvelis went through a lot of trial and error to come up with the perfect recipe for buttermilk biscuits.

“It was a lot of buttermilk and a lot of stomach aches,” Kostopoulos said. “Between our buttermilk pancakes and buttermilk biscuits, we know we have the recipe down pat.”

Kostopoulos and Kouvelis have a wealth of experience in the restaurant business. They have been business partners for 15 years, and own another restaurant in Crest Hill.

Buttermilk Cafe also features a full-service specialty coffee bar where one can order any number of beverages, such as a mocha coconut or cinnamon spice latte.

“We’re really excited about the machine that we’ve purchased,” Kostopoulos said. “It is a fully automated machine, from frothing and steaming the milk to calculating the weights. I am only one of two establishments in Illinois that actually have this. It is the Bentley of espresso machines.”

The machine also will remember what you’ve ordered,

he said.

“If you come in and you order any specialty coffee beverage and you liked it, the next time you come in, it will be exactly the same,” Kostopoulos said.

“That’s how sophisticated this machine is.”

Buttermilk Cafe offers a full breakfast menu, including omelets, pancakes, waffles, crepes, skillets, French toast and eggs Benedict prepared in a variety of ways.

“We wanted to cater to all needs, from basic breakfast to the higher sophisticated palate,” Kostopoulos said. “My business partner and I are both self-proclaimed foodies. We put together fusion flavors. For instance, our Benedict dishes – every single one is authentically made on a different bread and hollandaise sauce. Our steak Benedict is served on a french bread and it has a herbed bearnaise sauce. We’re definitely unique.

We’re not the average breakfast place.”

The lunch menu features Angus beef burgers, sandwiches and salads. Everything on the menu is made from scratch, he said.

“I don’t even have a walk-in freezer,” Kostopoulos said. “All I have is a two-door freezer where I store some frozen products, such as french fries. That’s how much I believe in the product being fresh.”

“When you dine, and you look outside the window, you actually can see the river and you see bicyclists,” he said.

The plan is to expand the Buttermilk Cafe concept and open

additional restaurants, Kostopoulos said. They are eying the northwest suburbs next, such as the Schaumburg area.

“We are just looking to make this a well-oiled machine before we move on,” Kostopoulos said.

Without a doubt, I would order the shrimp Gyoza again. A crispy outer layer of the dumpling encased minced vegetables and shrimp and came with a side of soy-based sauce for dipping.

We ordered three other sushi rolls to share: the Crunchy Spicy Tuna ($8.50), the namesake Matsuri roll ($13.95) and the Geneva Roll ($8.25).

Everything tasted great, but the Matsuri Roll was the table favorite, as half of the roll was topped with tuna while the other half had salmon. Delicate rou and a spicysauce drizzle topped each roll, which was filled with imitation crab meat, cucumber and

panko.

The Geneva Roll had a crunchy, panko topping with super white tuna and salmon.

The Crunchy Spicy Tuna roll looked similar to the Geneva roll, but featured spicy tuna as the star ingredient and delivered a kick spice to the palate.

The Matsuri bar serves wine, hot and cold sakes, hot and iced tea, Japanese beer – Kirin, Sapporo and Asahi – coke products and Japanese sodas – Watermelon and Strawberry Ramune.

Whether capping a long day of shopping along the serene streets of Geneva or in need of a calming respite during a hectic work week, stop in Matsuri for its namesake roll, the shrimp Gyoza and a piping hot bowl of miso soup, and all will be right with the world.

Troupe iMprov is a touring group made up of high school students from different districts who collaborate, create and perform together. GENEVA – Dining out in downtown Geneva can be a daunting affair. There are so many options, and so many of them are so very good.

Over time, I have found that the best way to try out a “new” restaurant is to dine-in for lunch. Lunch tends to even the playing field price-wise.

Usually, prices are cheaper overall, and much of the dinner menu can be found on the lunch menu for less money.

Since dining at sushi restaurants can be a more costly endeavor, I decided to try Matsuri Japanese Restaurant for lunch Monday. Matsuri is a sushi bar situated along the popular Third Street, a stone’s throw away from the Geneva Metra station.

High ceilings give the illusion that the restaurant is larger than it is in actuality, and the clean, quiet space is simply decorated. Though the restaurant was empty upon our arrival, service was expectantly great. With a kind smile, quick service and a helpful attitude, our waitress made our experience at Matsuri a delightful one. The food didn’t hurt either.

For less than $10, my dining companion ordered Chicken Teriyaki with California Roll, a special lunch combo that came with miso soup, a bowl of steamed white rice, a six-piece California roll and thinly-sliced, teriyaki chicken ($8.95). Other specialty lunch items include shrimp or vegetable tempura and beef or salmon teriyaki ($8.95 to $13.50).

The miso soup, a common element during any sushi experience – and not often an item that enthralls diners with its complexities of flavors – soothed my senses with its steaming broth while tofu cubes melted in my mouth.

On a recommendation, my dining companion and I ordered shrimp Gyoza ($4.50), five Japanese-style, pan-fried shrimp dumplings. (Pan-fried

Hawks’ success brings in new recruits

By STEPHEN GORDON editorial@shawmedia.com The Fox Valley Hawks perhaps became too well-known with their 2014-15 regular season.

The team, which finished 20-5 and advanced to the second round of the Combined Division of the 2015 Blackhawk Cup State High School Hockey Tournament, began its twoday spring season registration the night of March 23 at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva with an unexpected boost.

“We as a club were just thinking it would be another ho-hum spring season,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “You know, hoping to get

between 20 to 22 players out and get evaluations going and then get started playing in a spring league. Well, needless to say, we were shocked by what took place these past couple of days.”

The success the Hawks enjoyed on the ice was noticed by many. A team that will graduate five seniors and return 11 athletes next season saw a total of 49 players register for the spring season. This caused the club to develop three teams that each will play in the West Meadows Spring High School Hockey League in Rolling Meadows beginning in April.

“We probably picked up somewhere between 15 to 20 extra players for the spring

that we did not expect,” Hawks second-year president Matt Gadow said. “I think a lot of people have noticed us based on the culture we have currently going right now, which is to have fun and enjoy playing for us but play hard.”

Gadow said of the 49 players who registered, 29 were eighth-graders and 20 were going to be freshmen or sophomores in high school. Gadow said those who are currently in eighth grade can play spring hockey, as they will be high school freshmen in August.

“The club went through a lot of constant change from 2009 through 2012,” Gadow said. “And that did not help us.

I think the stability we have and people knowing about us is paying off. I am excited. It feels good because we have been working so hard to make this work.”

The Hawks will utilize their current varsity coaching staff of Gabrielsen and assistant coach Mark Sokniewicz to lead the varsity spring team while there will be a Blue JV team and a White JV team under the direction of Dan Bednarek, Chris Bednarek and Steve Sokniewicz. The five goaltenders who will be playing in the spring will be under the watchful eye of Hawks goalie coach Peter Garvey.

“Both JV teams will be under the same staff but not play

at the same time,” Gabrielsen said. “So there will be no conflicts. The only way there would be a conflict is if both JV teams would meet in a title game in late May.” Gabrielsen said the effects of a successful season combined with social media and local newspaper coverage drove the spring enrollment numbers.

“But in truth, we just did not expect the kind of numbers we got,” he said. “Do I think we will get as many to come out for us in early September?

I would hope so and I think there is a good chance it will be the case, but you just never know. This is a shocking great step for this program.”
