Swing with the times at Primrose Farm Barn Dance

editorial@kcchronicle.com There’s no better way to swing into spring or get a (Lindy) hop on summer than with the second annual Barn Dance on Saturday, May 16 at Primrose Farm. With music once again provided by the Chicago area’s sublimely smooth Jake Sanders Quintet and dance lessons courtesy of Batavia’s own Tri-City Swing dancers, this evening under the stars at the farm promises to be a jive-hot step back in time.

Not one to rest on the laurels of last year’s exceedingly popular inaugural event, Manager of Farm Programs and Interpretive Services Laura Johns and the staff at Primrose Farm have kicked things up a notch for this year’s high-stepping night of fun and food and fancy footwork.

But for anyone whose footwork may be less than fancy, the folks from Tri-City Swing will once again be providing dance lessons to help dancers get in the – well, swing of things. The farm will open its doors at 6 p.m. to allow plenty of time to check in before dance lessons begin.

“One of the best things about this program is the dance lessons,” said Johns.

Tri-City Swing instructors will gather all participants into two concentric circles to demonstrate the steps, then let the dancers work with the partner standing opposite them. The practice progresses round-robin style, so dancers get to dance with a number of people before the actual Barn Dance begins.

“It’s a great ice breaker,” Johns said. “It gives you a chance to meet new people and have a lot of fun trying to learn the dance steps.”

Learning swing dance can be that much more fun if one dresses in costumes of the era.

Anyone wearing period appropriate clothes from the 1930s and 1940s can choose to participate in a costume competition.

This People’s Choice contest will reward creativity and authenticity in capturing the era through vintage clothes and accessories, so get ready to raid grandma’s closet or sift through area thrift stores.

Just as taking a break from the rigors of seasonal chores

That’s right – all the ingredients for making everyone’s favorite fireside food will be on hand – graham crackers, marshmallows and hunks of chocolate. And what would a bonfire be without a weenie roast? Event planners will have hot dog kits available – hot dog, bun and all the fixings to roast over an open fire. And, as always, peanuts, popcorn and sodas in old-fashioned glass bottles will be part of the evening’s refreshments.

Dancing in the barn can be an energetic pursuit, so when dancers need to cool their heels, tractor-drawn wagon rides around the farm fields will give them a chance to catch their breaths.

“They’ll get to see the farm in a whole new light,” Johns said.

Twinkle lights and kerosene lanterns give the farm yard a festive glow, and vases of fresh-cut flowers also add to the party atmosphere.

GENEVA – Geneva sixth-graders probably didn’t expect to get homework from Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer.

The actress, who visited both Geneva middle schools on April 9, instructed the students to create a time capsule by writing a letter to themselves detailing their most outlandish dream. It could be wanting to be a bigger star than Justin Bieber or wanting to be a doctor by day and a writer by night, she said during a presentation in Geneva Middle School South’s cafeteria.

“This is your biggest hope and dream,” Spencer said.

Date the letter, she told the students, place it in a sealed envelope, hide it and – on bad days – think of that dream and do something, even if it’s reading a book or talking with someone, to work toward it.

Outlandish dreams can happen, she said, noting hers as a girl were to become an actress and writer.

CHRONIC EYELID INFECTION Chronic eyelid infection (“blepharitis”) is often caused by seborrheic dermatitis, which is characterized by excess oil secretion and frequently affects the scalp. This oil buildup, which leads to dandruff on the scalp, causes localized irritation, redness, burning, itching, and dryness near the eyes.

This problem can be treated at home, initially with the placement of warm compresses on the eyelids for about two minutes, followed by subsequent reapplications of the compresses to loosen the oil and scales. Next, the eye should be washed with a cotton swab moistened with diluted baby shampoo (one part shampoo to 20 parts water), followed by warm compresses. If this once-daily cleaning regimen does not prove effective within two weeks, the eye doctor should be consulted.

P.S. An untreated bacterial eye infection can lead to “ulcerative blepharitis,” which can cause eyelash loss, eyelid scarring, and corneal inflammation.

BATAVIA – Residents are being invited to take part in setting a world record for largest kick scooter parade.

“We are needing everybody’s help,” Batavia resident Randy Simonian, who is organizing the event, said at a recent Batavia City Council meeting. “This is not just for kids. First and foremost, we have to break a record.”

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday April 25, rain or shine, at the Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk, near Houston Street and North Island Avenue in downtown Batavia. It will start and end in downtown Batavia, Simonian said.

“Each scooter has to travel two miles to break the world record,” he said.

Simonian wants to break a record set in 2013 in New Zealand, when 489 participants set a Guinness World Record for

Suzanne Holaday Lane Weimer, age 77, of Sugar Grove, died on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at home.

She was born July 3, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio, the only daughter of Robert E. and Mary (Hauptman) Holaday. She began her college training at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio where she also belonged to the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Suzanne received her Bachelor of Science in education at Northern Illinois University in June of 1972 and began her teaching career of 21 years for District #303 in St. Charles, Illinois, spending 18 of those years serving Lincoln School.

This was a job she dearly loved.

She was a member of the Baker Memorial Methodist Church where she was active on the administrative board, served as a youth group advisor and was a member of the Ruth Circle for over 30 years. She served as a Den Mother for Troop 119 at Lincoln School. Suzanne was also a member of the Imperial Glass Club, 20s-30's40's Depression Glass Club of Chicago, the Big Rock Historical Society, the Auroraland Auto Restorers Club, the National Crosley Club and the Sugar Grove Historical Society, where she taught history of

Once in Sugar Grove, she became active in the English Congregational United Church of Christ serving on the administrative board, the Willing Workers and various Ministry groups.

Suzanne is survived by her husband, Paul G. Weimer; her son, Stuart Lane III and his daughters, Victoria and Heather Lane; her son, Stephen (Pattie) Lane and their daughters, Maggie, Emma and Olivia; her stepdaughter, Linda (Michael) Weimer Lister and her daughter, Rosie; and her stepson, Brian Weimer and his daughter, Jami.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her youngest son, Scott Holaday Lane.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Dr., Sugar Grove, IL 60554.

Her services were held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home.

How to live large in a tiny house

I love the efficiency of it. I love the flexible use of space. I love the things that fold out from the wall, and who doesn’t love miniature things – so cute! But when I think about it for my lifestyle, it would be darling – for about the first week. Then, after tripping over my family during that week, I’d start thinking about an addition or maybe a new house.

When I was in architecture school, I had a professor by the name of Kaya Arikoglu.

He would say, “You can’t afford the mansion, but you might be able to afford one room of that mansion.”

I love that philosophy – it really works, and I have used it over and over again throughout my architectural career.

About 14 years ago, I designed our vacation home on a pretty tight budget and I used this philosophy. Yes, I had to make sacrifices – I couldn’t have the grand kitchen, the palatial bathroom, the separate dining room, the to-die-for master bedroom. I had

Q: I was given expensive crystal stemware by my mother-in-law for my wedding. I don’t use or want it but can’t get rid of it without starting World War III. How do you store breakable things you don’t want?

Walsh: Bubble wrap. Solid cardboard box. Attic. Or negotiate a truce and find someone who can use and love it.

Q: What is your formula for keeping clothes? How often

Q: I’m a 30-something getting married this year, and for various reasons I dislike the idea of registering for a boatload of new household items, let alone formal china or anything like that. However, I do love to cook and entertain, so I feel a little like I shouldn’t give up on a registry altogether. Do you have any advice on how to approach this?

Walsh: A wedding registry can easily get out of control. It’s great that you have such a good perspective on it. Choose only items that you love and know you’ll use. Don’t stress! And please send me a piece of your wedding cake!

Q: I was wondering if you have had success with your approach to de-cluttering for people who are hoarders. I am a hoarder and feel completely overwhelmed with my

Walsh: Yard sales are great for getting rid of lot of stuff fast, but you have to accept that you’re not going to make much money.

If you have patience, a nice day, some extra time and a great sense of humor, then have a yard sale. If not, donate.

Q: Do you believe that eBay

is a good platform for ridding homes of clutter?

Walsh: EBay is a great place to assess the value of things.

(Generally things are worth less than you think.)

To make money, use eBay or something similar. To get rid of clutter fast (you’re not going to make much money, though), try a yard sale.

Q: I have a box of orphan electronics cords: coaxial cables, A/V cables to connect TVs and DVD players, phone cords, ethernet connectors from old modems. What can I do with these? Recycle? Donate? Trash?

Walsh: If you don’t need them, pack them up, say goodbye and send them off to a donation center.

Q: What do you think of having yard sales? Are they generally worth the time and effort, or do you think it would just be better to donate the stuff I’m getting rid of?

Or a simple, very low-tech solution to organizing receipts is to use two bankers’ spikes. Get in the habit of cleaning receipts out of your wallet or purse daily.

Place receipts on one of the spikes as they come in. When one spike is full, start the other.

If you haven’t needed any of the receipts in the time it takes you to fill a spike, chances are you never will. When you fill up the second spike, throw out all the receipts on the first.

Big plans for Radiant Raw Foods in St. Charles

Business offers dehydrated veggies, fruits along with hosting artists, musicians, dancers

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As a former break dancer, St. Charles resident Deecee Chung said he knows the importance of fueling up properly before doing a routine.

He hopes everyone, including dancers, will develop better eating habits as a result of his newly opened business, Radiant Raw Foods, at 1519 E. Main St., Suite 1100, in St. Charles. His business, which opened in February, sells dehydrated fruits and vegetables.

Chung, whose actual name is Daniel Chung, dehydrates bananas, pineapples, apples and other food using a commercial dehydrator that he designed. He has a background in designing heating systems.

“We’re getting the temperature below 112 to 118 degrees,” he said. “At that temperature, it’s the perfect temperature to just take out the water content and to preserve the juice and the enzymes and nutrients and vitamins. Up to 98 percent of the nutrients and enzymes are retained.”

Because the enzymes are preserved, the body is able to digest dehydrated food easily, he said. Dehydrating the food also intensifies the sweetness of it.

“It intensifies five to 10 times,” he said. “It’s great to see kids choose this over candy sometimes.”

He is partial to the dehydrated pineapple and banana that he makes.

“A lot of the banana chips that you find are fried and very salty,” Chung said.

It takes between 36 and 72 hours to dehydrate fruits and vegetables. Chung will shop for groceries up to three times a day

“The fresher the fruits and vegetables are, the better they taste when they are dehydrated,” he said.

Beyond the health aspects of dehydrated food, he sees it helping solve the problem of world hunger.

“We throw away so much food,” Chung said. “I have received bananas that were going to be thrown away. You just cut away the bad part. You can do so many different things. You could blend them with different fruits and vegetables and make a fruit leather/fruit roll-up. It’s healthy, and tastes amazing.”

Chung also wants to make it convenient for the general public to dehydrate their own food, and he wants to design a dehydrator that people can use in their homes.

He thinks that a dehydrator in one’s home should be as commonplace as a dishwasher. Right now, he is working with some large corporations that build consumer products.

“It’s just a great way to not throw away food,” he said.

In addition, the walls of the businesses are lined with art made by local artists. Chung is an artist himself.

As he noted, some of the break dancers and artists and musicians that perform at Radiant Raw Foods have never eaten an orange.

“It’s been quite an experience to introduce an orange or a pineapple to somebody, and it’s dehydrated,” he said. “They love it.”

Putting on his hat as an artist, Chung said he wants Radiant Raw Foods to introduce people to the fundamentals of art and show them how to express their creativity through art. The business will hold a “Hello Kitty” art exhibit/workshop from May 8 to June 8.

There will be an opening reception for the exhibit from 6

to 10 p.m. May 8, and there will be workshops from noon to 3 p.m.

Chung also has hopes to establish a high-level break dance/ dance school at Radiant Raw Foods.

A word of caution, though, to those wanting the check out the restaurant. Barrel+Rye doesn’t take reservations, so you might want to call to find out whether there are seats available.

ST. CHARLES – Shakou, a modern Japanese restaurant and bar in downtown St. Charles, opens tonight.

The restaurant’s dinner-only “opening weekend” will run from Thursday, April 16, through Sunday, April 19.

The following week, Shakou will resume its regular hours, which are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays; 11 to 1 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; 11 to 2 a.m.

Fridays; 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Saturdays; and 4 to 10 p.m.

Sundays.

Shakou, at 312 Main St., St. Charles, follows the opening of Shakou Libertyville two years ago. The main floor at Shakou features a dining room with a sushi bar and a cocktail lounge with a bar.

Upstairs, there’s a sake room for small groups and an upper mezzanine with a bar area for before-dinner drinks and cocktail celebrations, a news release states.

The dinner menu, created by executive chef Sang Choi, will include items such as hot and cold appetizers, soups, salads, by-the-piece nigiri/ sashimi and maki ($3 to $7), signature maki rolls ($12 to

$22) and beef, chicken, fish, noodle and seafood cooked entrees ($17 to $39).

Restaurant specialties will include signature maki, such as the Black Widow – black rice, lightly battered fresh water eel, avocado topped with tempura crunch, sauteed scallops, tobiko and unagi sauce – and the Golden Lobster – lobster tempura, avocado and masago, wrapped in soy paper and topped with seared garlic egg yolk sauce, unagi sauce and wasabi mayo.

Among the signature cocktails are The Dragon, made with dragon berry and lemon rum, white cranberry juice, passion fruit purée, a grenadine floater and cherry garnish; and the Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini, made with Stoli Blueberry Vodka, sour and citrus juice and lemon garnish.

A portion of the proceeds from the opening weekend will go to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association as part of the Shakou Cares program, designed by the restaurant’s owners to help local organizations raise funds, the release states.

GENEVA – For those looking for a comfortable place to kick back with friends after a hard day of work, Geneva has a fine new option.

Barrel+Rye, at 477 S. Third St., suite 184, in downtown Geneva, occupies the space that formerly housed Michael Angelo’s Deli. With its four big screen TV sets, the eatery resembles more of a sports bar, but the quality of the food is many levels above what one would expect at such an establishment.

The low level lighting in the restaurant also adds to the restaurant’s intimate and comfortable feeling.

After looking through the menu, my dining companion and I decided to start out with the creole wings appetizer, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The wings had just the right amount of kick to them – spicy, but not hot enough to burn your mouth.

For our entrées, she opted for the grilled cheese sandwich served on rye bread, while I chose the Black+Blue burger. Before we had even finished our appetizer, our entrees arrived, showing how

School and IHSA officials discuss IHSA sanctioning process for lacrosse

kdruley@shawmedia.com Athletic directors and IHSA officials predict lacrosse will soon come unshackled from its present holding pattern.

That should be no surprise for a sport long dubbed as the fastest-growing in America, even though the status symbol of official IHSA sanctioning looms the same way it has for years.

“I still am of the mindset that we are going to have a vote on one day making it a sport,” Geneva Athletic Director Jim Kafer said. “But right now, it’s kind of stuck in neutral.”

IHSA spokesman Matt Troha, also the organization’s boys and girls lacrosse administrator, bears proof.

“We really didn’t do anything with it this year,” he said. “Just with so many other things going on, it wasn’t something our board was considering adding.”

In August 2013, the IHSA board of directors announced the adoption of a boys and girls state series beginning in the spring of 2014 if schools could meet a participation quota of 65 boys teams and 40 girls teams.

Troha said girls programs satisfied that figure last season, but there still were fewer than 65 boys programs statewide.

Relative to other regions, the Kane County Chronicle area remains well-represented in lacrosse this spring. St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Batavia, Geneva, Marmion, St. Francis and Wheaton Academy offer boys programs while the St. Charles schools form a girls coop and St. Francis has a team.

To be sure, that’s a much larger scope than in October 2009, when the IHSA tentatively approved a boys and girls state series beginning in the spring of 2011, a development that ultimately fell short.

“The disconnect still lies in that some programs, they’re sort of loosely associated with the school and not quite run like the other programs are,” Troha said.

Among Tri-Cities schools, those relationships vary, with Geneva sparking the charge.

Kafer said Geneva has “embraced lacrosse as basically a quasi-sport” for a few years, registering athletes through the athletic department, offering facility usage and publishing rosters and schedules on its athletics website.

“We can’t say it’s a sport because it isn’t IHSA-sanctioned yet, but we do everything pretty much as we do for any sport,” Kafer said.

“It’s self-funded, but our boys volleyball is self-funded, too [apart from transportation]. The only difference is one is an IHSA sport and one isn’t.”

This spring, District 303 adopted each of St. Charles’ boys and girls high school lacrosse programs into its operation, marking the first time the sport came under the umbrella of the athletic department, East Athletic Director Mike Sommerfeld said.

St. Charles programs remain members of the clubbased Illinois High School Lacrosse Association and its

state series – the IHSA licenses game officials – but otherwise enjoy the same advantages and school pride as other athletes on campus.

“We’ve been really excited that we’re a school sport,” North student Charlotte O’Sullivan said of the girls co-op, which is set to play its first varsity home game at East’s Norris Stadium next week. “It makes transportation easier and practices easier. So it’s nice to be recognized.”

Sommerfeld called the development a natural progression.

“What we saw is that we just had so many kids playing the sport in this community, and they weren’t allowed to play at their school and they weren’t fully recognized as being a sport that we figured that it’s not going to go away and we should bring that in,” he said. “We should bring that in and make them a part of the athletic programs.”

At Batavia, first-year boys coach Kyle Sullivan, who doubles as a co-director of Naperville-based New Wave Lacrosse, said there’s a “kind of modified” arrangement with

the athletic department.

A school liaison assists the program with such amenities as access to buses and reserving classrooms for film study.

In addition, the team has scheduled a few home games at Bulldog Stadium, a bigger space than its usual setup at Rotolo Middle School.

“That’s a big deal for us,” Sullivan said. “A lot of schools don’t get that.”

Although communication with the athletic department is growing, the Batavia program hasn’t escaped encountering its share of club-centric issues.

Recently, Rotolo’s field was unplayable because of wet conditions, sending the Bulldogs scrambling to play a “home” game at Naperville’s Commisioners Park.

“That kind of fun stuff still happens to us, but I still think it’s getting better,” Sullivan said.

On its website, IHSA.org, the IHSA identifies boys and girls lacrosse as “emerging sports,” an official-sounding qualifier that’s on par with the familiar “fastest-growing” tag

that applies to lacrosse’s national reach.

IHSLA.org lists 87 programs statewide, including 34 under “A class” qualification for more established and traditionally competitive teams, per its description. The rest fall under the “B class” and tend to be newer programs.

The IHSLA website also stipulates that a school is not obligated to make lacrosse part of its varsity offering if the IHSA should sanction it. Perceived competitiveness and a district’s potential financial support are considerations.

Troha keeps in contact with IHSLA president Rich Martin, and relays Martin’s interest in helping guide lacrosse toward its latest Illinois benchmark.

“I think that he’s very good about representing their member schools,” Troha said. “He tells me the majority, they want that IHSA sanctioning.

They want the IHSA state tournament. I think he just wants it to happen at the right time. He doesn’t want to see it rushed through and have programs left behind.”
