ST. CHARLES – A longtime St. Charles resident was honored Feb. 6 by the city’s chamber of commerce for his many contributions to the community.

Steve Martin received the chamber’s Charlemagne Award, a lifetime achievement award given to someone with a distinguished history of service to the community. Martin, 61, accepted the award in front of his family at the 93rd annual Charlemagne Awards Dinner, which took place at the Q Center, 1405 N. Fifth Ave., St. Charles.

“Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart,” Martin said during his acceptance speech. “I really appreciate this, and I will continue to serve my community the best that I can.”

Martin has a lengthy history of service in St. Charles. He first joined the Jaycees in 1975 and has held the positions of chapter president, JCI senator and U.S. ambassador with the Jaycees.

County hosts electronics recycling event NEW DEVICE GIVES SIGHT TO THE BLIND The FDA has approved the use of a device that translates video signals into data that the optic nerve can process. The Argus II Retinal Prosthesis system is designed to sidestep damaged photoreceptors in the retina and send signals directly to the next layer of retinal cells, which are on the pathway to the optic nerve. The device does this by using a miniature camera positioned in eyeglasses to capture images and send them to an external computer, which transforms them into signals that the second layer of retinal cells can understand. Data is then sent back to the glasses, which transmits the information through a small antenna to an array of 60 tiny electrodes implanted in the patient’s retina.

P.S. The “bionic eye” described above does not create crisp images, but allows the brain to interpret light and shadow in cases where it could not do so before.

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Kane County residents can recycle books and electronics from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 14, at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.

Electronics include more than televisions and computers, Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said.

“Anything that hooks up to a computer or television, such as VCRs, DVD players, stereo equipment, software, fax machines, phones, scanners and printers,” Jarland said.

Also considered electronics for recycling at the event are keyboards, laptops, cellphones, Christmas lights and microwave ovens, she said.

The increase in recycling electronics began when they were banned from landfills, starting in 2012, Jarland said.

The county hosted 60 monthly recycling events in Kane County from 2010 to 2014 – in addition to five permanent drop-off locations, Jarland said.

“During the five years, we collected 6.5 million pounds of electronics,” Jarland said.

“Every month, 600 to 800 people come in their cars

over four hours, and we fill three to five semitrucks.

Each truck holds about 24,000 pounds.”

Throughout the five years, she estimated 69,000 county residents participated in recycling electronics.

Small appliances – such as coffeemakers and paper shredders – are not banned from landfills, Jarland said, but county residents are welcome to bring those in for recycling, too.

“It was not part of the legislation, but because the infrastructure exists for recycling electronic items, we recycle small appliances,”

Jarland said.

County recyclers should note a newsletter misprinted the date of next month’s event, Jarland said.

The correct time and date is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 14, at the same location. The event will include document shredding and the recycling of liquid latex paint.

A per-can fee of $3.50 applies to the paint.

Hazardous waste and large appliances, such as washers and refrigerators, are not accepted, Jarland said.

BATAVIA – A water and sewer study the Batavia City Council had commissioned is recommending officials increase water and sewer rates during the next five years.

Aldermen were scheduled to review the results of the study Feb. 10 during their Committee of the Whole meeting at the Batavia Government Center. Last year, aldermen approved hiring Municipal and Financial Services Group to do the study.

As part of its study, Municipal and Financial Services Group recommended increasing water and sewer rates during the next five years to fund ongoing operations and capital investments in the water and sewer systems. As proposed, water rates would increase by 3 percent in 2016 and 2017, and by 4.5 percent in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The study also recommend-

ed increasing sewer rates by 6 percent starting in 2016 through 2020. In addition, it recommended the city adopt an alternative residential water rate structure that includes a summer peak surcharge rate, and increase industrial sewer user charges.

Average users would see their $51.34 monthly water and sewer bill increase to $53.73 next year under the current water rate structure, according to the study.

The study stated about 14 percent of the city’s water lines are exceeding useful life, at a replacement cost of $24 million. It recommended the city “ramp up” to replacing about $2 million a year worth of water lines by 2025.

City officials also have anticipated – over the next decade – about $50 million in improvements might be necessary at the wastewater treatment facility in order to comply with new regulations and to expand treatment capacity.

Tickets still available for annual comedy showcase

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The DuKane Chapter of ABATE Illinois is ready to help the community laugh into spring with its annual comedy showcase.

“It’s open to everybody,” events coordinator Wally Elliott said. “Anybody that likes comedy shows – that’s who we’re targeting.”

Set for Saturday, Feb. 21, the Laugh into Spring Comedy Showcase will start at 7 p.m. with live music, and the comedy portion is planned for 8 to 10 p.m., Elliott said.

Comics set to perform are Vince Carone, Ralphie Roberts, Jay Washington and Dale Irvin.

Parents should use their best judgment about bringing children to the event, Elliott said, noting the material should be appropriate for older teens.

It will be at Fox River Harley Davidson, 131 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

“We’re looking forward to the venue,” Elliott said, noting past venues have included the now-demolished VFW in St. Charles, the American Legion in West Chicago and the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.

BATAVIA – As 7-year-old Evan Nordenberg of Sugar Grove squeezed the plastic bottle, the toy diver started to make its descent to the bottom of the bottle.

Evan and other youngsters attending Fermilab’s Family Open House on Feb. 8 were learning about the principle of buoyancy, thanks to an experiment made by St. Charles East High School students.

The presentation was one of the many activities that took place during the event.

“I liked how it got heavy and went to the bottom, and then it went back up,” Evan said.

St. Charles East High School junior Keeley Sherman, 17, was more than happy to speak about

the experiment to the kids.

“It’s really fun to explain to the kids how all this works,” Sherman said.

As she explained to those walking past the experiment, without squeezing the bottle, the overall density of the diver is slightly lower than that of the water, so it floats. Squeezing the sides of the bottle, one increases the pressure on the air bubble, compressing it into a smaller space. Sherman told the kids that by doing this, it decreases the volume of the bubble, causing an increase in the overall density of the diver.

When it becomes greater than that of the surrounding water, it sinks, she said.

“We had looked at different physics experiments for kids,” St. Charles East High School junior Megan Castro said. “We

That’s when the St. Charles Park District, in cooperation with Brilliance Subaru of Elgin, launches its first Run Fur Fun, a paws-itively dashing event for dogs of all shapes and sizes, as well as their human companions.

“This event is really geared toward the pet owner by encouraging them to get out with their pet through an active and fun experience,” said Meg Jourden-Messerich, assistant superintendent of recreation for the Park District.

On a regular basis, running with the dogs – either big or little – has numerous benefits for both man and beast. Not only is it great exercise, but it also provides an invigorating way for person and pet to bond.

And pets make great personal trainers. After all, there’s always one more tree to sniff, one more shrub to check out and – ooh, look! A squirrel!

There will be no lack of sensory and sport experiences during the Run Fur Fun.

And the fun doesn’t stop when the last foot and paw cross the finish line. After-race fun includes refreshments – hot dogs, of course – and the chance for two- and four-legged racers to mix and mingle.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to make new friends,” Jourden-Messerich said.

“We’re really excited to be able to offer this type of event to dogs and dog lovers.”

The race’s 2-mile course takes runners through the grounds of both Hickory Knolls Discovery Center and James O. Breen Community Park, where forest and field provide varied terrain and tranquil vistas.

Accompanied by their human companions, canines compete according to weight class, Jourden-Messerich said.

For little dogs less than 30 pounds, to midsized pups 31 to 60 pounds and the biggest dogs at 61 pounds and above, prizes are awarded for the fastest time in each weight class.

Inspired by the distinctive bibs used to identify racers in marathons, canine competitors will be distinguished by bright bandanas color coordinated by weight class.

“The whole Run Fur Fun event is centered on the accomplishment of the fourlegged friends, as opposed to that of the runner or athlete,” Jourden-Messerich said.

Even the prizes are canine-centric. Winning dogs will receive a dog tag-shaped medal. “Certainly, the pet’s companion can wear the medal or put it on display, but it’s also fun to add it to the dog’s regular ID tag,” Jourden-Messerich said.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Looking at the characteristics of the county’s murder cases in the past four years is both distressing and reassuring, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

In 11 of the 15 cases, he said, the victim had a domestic relationship with the defendant at some point.

McMahon said correlation is distressing because it shows the relationships can be very tragic for those involved. But, he said, it is reassuring because it shows Kane County is a safe place to live and work and that the rate of random violent crime is extremely low.

McMahon presented the information, along with other highlights from the 2014 annual report, to reporters during his monthly meeting with the media Feb. 3.

In 2014, the report shows, assistant state’s attorneys screened more than 2,600 investigations from more than three dozen police agencies to determine whether felony charges were appropriate.

More than half of the 2,623 felony calls were from the Aurora and Elgin police departments, according to the report. The Kane County Sheriff’s Office had 228, St. Charles police had 128, Batavia police had 119, North Aurora police had 46, Geneva police had 33, Elburn police had 17, Sugar Grove police had 15, Campton

Hills police had seven, Kane County Forest Preserve police had four and Maple Park police had three.

Traffic, misdemeanor and driving under the influence cases represented the largest number of the office’s criminal cases in 2014, McMahon said.

According to the report, 2014 had 5,148 new misdemeanor files, down by 4.8 percent from 2013.

Misdemeanor DUIs also dropped, falling from 1,063 in 2013 to 946 in 2014, according to the report, which notes DUIs are continuing to decline nationally.

Additionally, McMahon said, the office conducted two no-refusal weekends to crack down on drunken driving March 15 to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day and Nov. 26 to coincide with Thanksgiving.

Sixteen police agencies participated in both dates and 17 drivers were charged, according to the report.

McMahon said the office tries to give as much advanced notice as possible about these events so motorists can think about the consequences of drinking and driving and make alternate means of transportation.

The office’s most recent no-refusal event occurred during the weekend of Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, McMahon said, adding some arrests were made despite the snowstorm.

More details about the results will be available next month, he said.

To most, this would seem natural because I work in the field and have always had a very strong aesthetic point of view.

But, what our friends and colleagues don’t realize is that my husband also has interior design opinions – ones that I bulldozed over.

Although I am proud of how our house turned out, I am not proud of the fact that I pretended to, but in reality did not, involve him.

My husband equates the decorating process to the time we selected our wedding registry – I dragged him along under the guise that his opinion mattered when all I really wanted was for him to like what I liked.

For our house, we bickered about the placement of the dining table, the color of the sofa, whether to hang curtains and of course the price of everything.

In almost all cases, I got my way, but not without consequences.

Even today, years after the last room was finished, my decorating domination comes back to haunt me especially in the heat of an argument (it’s the prime example of how I take over everything).

Although I can’t undo my actions, I can impart some wisdom to my clients so that their process is more balanced than ours was. I encourage couples to focus on the most important elements of decorating, not just style but also what I call the four Cs: cost, comfort, color and compromise.

I also asked for the advice of Gail Saltz, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Saltz gives smart, no-nonsense tips – ones that I wish I had followed years ago.

To determine the right fabric choices, think about look, feel and, most important, durability (check out solution-dyed outdoor fabrics for all upholstery).

And when it comes to sofas, consider extra-deep seats, down or down-covered foam cushions and ample pillows or throw cushions (these are so that short people like me will be comfortable in those extra-deep seats!).

Color

Painting your walls is without a doubt the single most transformative tool in all of interior design and one of the most flexible. Its impact is immediate, changing the mood of a room and your perception of its size.

Although painting a room is easy, choosing a color can be a challenge. Numerous times I have sat with couples as they labor over tiny paint chips.

Clarity comes when I tell them

that the simplest way to judge a color is to try it out, at which point they roll up their sleeves and get to work. Painting is fun, and working together will make you both feel good.

Saltz says it is important to give each other credit. “Pride in your home, like pride in your family, is something that can increase your closeness because it reflects both your tastes.”

Compromise

When it comes to decorating, I have worked with couples who have clearly delineated responsibilities: He deals with everything outside; she deals with everything inside. But for most it’s not that easy.

One client of mine said, “all men want a La-Z-Boy recliner, and all women don’t.”

Though the truth might not be so black and white, the challenge still is finding a way to balance style desires with comfort and financial desires so that, as Saltz says, “you avoid later resentments.”

I wish I had had that advice.

Saltz recommends that couples make communication a priority with weekly check-ins during which they take each other’s temperature on their decisions,

budget and any changes that might have arisen.

Style

Style is perhaps the trickiest for couples to navigate because it is so personal. You can’t argue with someone if he or she thinks a sofa isn’t comfortable, but you can argue if that person doesn’t like a sofa because of its chunky leg and modern silhouette.

Presumably you and your partner have had some discussion of style before you embark on a decorating project, but, quite often, one’s taste changes and evolves during the process.

Saltz warns that “if you disagree, remember it is stuff, not people, you’re talking about, so don’t personalize having different tastes.”

The one place Saltz makes a definite style recommendation is in the bedroom. She says, “Think ‘romantic’ in your bedroom. This is your nest with your partner. Increase both of your feelings of being desired by planning a place to share your love for each other.”

• Baby monitor. Unless you have an exceptionally large home, plan on throwing exceptionally noisy parties or are an exceptionally easygoing new parent, either you will hear your newborn cry from another part of the home or you’ll be frequently checking in on the child the way paranoid new parents tend to do. There may come a time down the road when the monitor makes sense but starting off, you can live without this.

• Wipe warmer. There are so many questions about this device: Do you keep it on all the time, and if so, don’t the wipes burn? Or dry out? And how cold are wipes stored at room temperature, anyway? It’s more of a hassle than a convenience. Plus, do you really want your kid to get used to warmed-up wipes?

• Bassinet. It’s perfectly reasonable to use a bassinet in those early weeks, because it’s cozier than a crib and can keep your newborn nearby. But it’s not essential. A bassinet is a piece of furniture with a very short shelf life.

• Parenting books. Of course you want to absorb all there is to know about being a good parent.

Note to new parents: You don’t really need all that stuff.

As you get ready for your first baby, you are going to see some very long checklists of supposed essentials. You should know that most of these things are optional. Which is especially lucky for you who live in smaller spaces.

Here’s a list of some of the things you can live without.

• Changing table. If you have a regular table or a bureau or anything with a flat surface, then you have your changing table. Done. Investing in an actual changing table is unnecessary not only because it’s really just a glorified tabletop, but also because you’re not going to be anywhere near the changing table half the times that the baby needs to be changed. You will change the baby in every room of your home, on the couch, on the floor, in your car, in restaurants, on airplanes. And you’ll manage without a changing table.

• Diaper bag. No one ever said that baby gear had to be carried around in ugly vinyl bags with an abundance of compartments. You’ll need to carry some sort of bag large enough to hold diapers and wipes and maybe bottles, but any

diapers, but isn’t that more sanitary than investing in something that promises to contain the odor of days-old human waste? Just take your garbage out. It’s so much easier than buying special bags and a bulky plastic container for those bags.

• Diaper stacker. Millions of parents have gotten their children through years of diapers and toilet training without even being aware that there exists a piece of storage equipment designed specifically for diapers. Keep it that way.

• Baby swing. Maybe you’ve heard some parents swear by this infant entertainment system. Batavia’s Brankin writes first book ‘The Family Girl’ first installment in book trilogy, tells story of assassin

atavia resident Katherine Brankin decided to make her first book a thriller.

“The Family Girl” tells the story of assassin Catalina Bennett, who is following in the footsteps of her father, a retired assassin. The book is the first installment in a trilogy that Brankin is writing.

“The Family Girl” is available in the United States as an ebook on Amazon Kindle, Apple iBooks, Google Play, Barnes & Noble and Blio.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to interview Brankin, who also owns her own graphic design business.

Eric Schelkopf: I understand that you were born in Russia.

Katherine Brankin: Yes, I moved to the United States when I was 16. I’ve lived in the United States longer than I was in Russia.

Schelkopf: What inspired you to write the book?

Brankin: One day, I kind of thought, well, you drive in these subdivisions, but what happens behind closed doors? You start imagining different scenarios.

Perhaps these people have unique lives.

I love thrillers and spy novels. I’m a huge James Bond fan.

And it just kind of clicked for me. And I’ve always loved strong female characters.

There hasn’t been a strong female character that is an assassin by choice, not driven by revenge. She made the choice to follow in her father’s footsteps and become an assassin.

She knew about the lifestyle. She knew what it was, and she made that choice.

Schelkopf: How long have you been thinking about writing this book?

Brankin: I wrote it in chunks. It came in bursts. And it all kind of pieced together.

Schelkopf: The fact that you were born in Russia, does that have anything to do with the subject matter?

Brankin: Not really. But I grew up on fabulous Russian literature.

I grew up with a book in my hand. I loved a good story, and I love a story where you just dive into it, and you disappear into that world.

And I also love a story with action that drives you, and that you can picture in your head. When I write, everything plays out in my mind as a movie.

Schelkopf: So, you hope that your readers can really visualize what is happening?

Brankin: Yes. I’m a highly visual person, and I [visualize] everything. And I also realize that a lot of people don’t read as much any more. So, I wanted to bring the excitement of television and film back into reading by creating vivid characters, really clear action and a story that moves fast.

I wanted them to go along and get excited, just like watching a movie.

Schelkopf: I understand you have started writing the second book.

Brankin: “The Family Girl” came out in October. And as soon as the book came out, I already had the second one sitting on my desk.

There were several reviews of “The Family Girl” where people were saying, “I hope it is the start of a series.” The plan is to have a trilogy. Whether it goes beyond that, I haven’t decided.

There’s a lot of characters that could also have their own story.

Schelkopf: So, there could be spin-off books?

Brankin: Potentially, yes. There could even be a prequel about her father and his career.

Schelkopf: “The Family Girl” has received some good reviews. That must please you. Does that give you gratification?

Brankin: It makes me realize that it was a long road, but it was worth it. And it’s helping me to move forward on my second book.

I’m pleasantly surprised that the book also appeals to men as well. It’s not just for women.

Guys like it, too. They like the characters. And they love all the toys.

Schelkopf: In sitting down to write “The Family Girl,” did the words come pretty easily?

Brankin: Yes. I write, I guess, the same way they shoot movies, out of sequence.

I have a loose idea of the overall story, and then I put Photo by Katherine Brankin it all together in pieces.

I write at really weird times. I don’t sit down in the morning and say, “Today, I’m going to write so many words.”

Sometimes I write in my car, sometimes I write when I’m waiting to pick up my 8-year-old son, Danny, from H.C. Storm Elementary School. I’ve written dialogue and plot points on the backs of receipts.

Schelkopf: This is your first book. Do you have any advice for people thinking of writing a book?

Brankin: I tell everybody to keep on writing and don’t give up. My motto is that good things come to people who wait.

As long as you believe and edit a lot, it will happen.

The Trapiche Broquel, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012 ($18), has a chalky mid-palate and finish. Had the label read Napa Valley, I’d have thought it was from Napa Valley’s Stag’s Leap District. If it was, the price would be drastically higher.

The fruit is from 40-year-old vines grown at 3,700 feet. The clay soils yield to cassis, leather, ripe raspberry flavors and distinct tannins.

“We are trying to make a balanced wine,” Pi said.

“We used to have a wine that featured more cooked fruit flavors and was on the jammy side with marmalade characteristics. We pick a little earlier now and try to hide the fruit from the sun better in the vineyard. Our wines are able to have better acidity now.

“Younger vines have a lot of energy. The quality though isn’t always what we want.

Like a person that ages, the older vines learn how to do more with less energy, and they produce better fruit.”

Driven to make a chardonnay where the fruit flavors shine, 75 percent is fermented in stainless steel for nine months. Twenty-five percent spends time in new French and American oak barrels, but Pi shuts down any secondary malolactic fermentation as it begins.

In doing so, the Trapiche Broquel, Chardonnay, 2012 ($18), is crisp yet has a fuller mouth feel. The Asian pear flavor is unmistakable.

“The movement to show what the fruit can do in Argentina is underway,” Pi said.

“The grapes are from high altitude and have very fresh flavors. We are showing off the fruit here, not the oak.”

It was easy to pick overripe fruit and use plenty of oak in the cellar.

This was the Argentina that had yet to find its way.

While it allowed consumers to find great values and enjoy wines that were drinkable, it was a cookie-cutter philosophy that Argentina needed to shed.

With all of the benefits of a unique wine terroir, it was only a matter of time before an ambitious winemaker in Argentina decided consumers should experience the nuances of fruit grown at 3,700 feet in the Andes Mountains. The diverse alluvial soils that formed from water washing down the Andes Mountains should be represented in the wine. An abundance of sunny days and desert conditions provide an ideal setting for vines to strive.

Small team St. Charles North gets big performances

WEST CHICAGO – Ethan Fredericks never heard anyone tell him his

St. Charles North wrestling career was over, even though IHSA rules confirm it.

A senior 170-pounder, Fredericks didn’t finish in third place or better at the Class 3A West Chicago Regional on Feb. 7, ostensibly relegating him to spectator status for the rest of the state series.

Because there’s no stipulation keeping Fredericks from working alongside his three sectional-bound teammates this week, however, he sees no finality. Only four other North Stars accompanied him to regionals, so Fredericks plans to stay invested, starting in the mat room.

“Small team,” Fredericks said, “but in my opinion, we’re one of the best small teams in the country. I’ll say that wholeheartedly. We have five guys, and we all placed at conference. We’re all very good.

Our records are pretty good.

If you beat us, you’re pretty decent. So we’re pretty happy with what we did this year.”

OK, so that last part smacks of closure, but consider it a rare break from form for Fredericks, who finished his senior

season at 19-15.

In any event, he’s right about that first part. Led by sophomore Chad Reynolds’ title at 160, each North Star who entered last month’s Upstate Eight Conference tournament

at Geneva finished in the top six.

At regionals, sophomore Kolbe O’Brien (28-7) paced the group, taking second at 106. Senior Steve Collins (27-10) finished third at 138 pounds while Reynolds (20-13) did the same at 160.

As with Fredericks, senior 132-pounder Conrad Noverini (22-13) fell one win short of advancing to the third-place bout.

“I mean, the guys that we put out are good,” Collins said.

“Once we get the numbers, we’ll be able to put out a whole good team. We’ve just got to get more freshmen and sophomores to join our team.”

That’s been the longstanding narrative at North, even before second-year coach Ben Hummel took the program’s reins.

North typically filled 10 spots in a 14-wrestler lineup this season, but a late rush of illnesses and injuries thinned the state-series crew.

O’Brien certainly personifies the notion that an underclassman can have success, even in a small program. He

qualified for sectionals as a freshman, finishing 35-8.

“I feel like I’ve gotten better,” O’Brien said. “Statistically, it might not show it, but I feel better in my matches and I’m wrestling better.”

He credits that, in part, to the atmosphere Hummel has created with the help of assistants and parents. Collins’ dad, Brent, for one, often mans the video camera at meets, taking footage for North to rehash via the online HUDL program.

“Guys want to win and wrestle more,” O’Brien said.

Even the ones who can no longer build upon their winloss record.

The way Fredericks saw it, he didn’t have time to sulk Feb. 7. That wouldn’t have been fair to Reynolds, with whom he’ll work closely during workouts once more.

“I’ll be his partner throughout the week, doing what I have to do to get him ready,” Fredericks said. “I’ve done my job so far trying to get him going. He’s a great kid who’s going to do whatever he can to be successful.”
