Leaves pickup available through Dec. 28 GENEVA – The city of Geneva’s curbside vacuum leaf collection program has ended for the season, but residents with leaves in their yard can still have them picked up for free through Saturday, Dec. 28. Advanced Disposal will collect leaves in paper yard waste bags that are left on the curb on scheduled garbage collection days. Refuse stickers are not required. The paper bags should be filled only with leaves.

Coast Guard plans boater education classes GENEVA – The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary has planned boater education classes at Gander Mountain, 2100 S. Randall Road, Geneva. Flotilla 41-7 9WR of St. Charles will have the classes on Sunday, Feb. 2, Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 30. The class is eight hours in length consisting of classroom instruction, reviews, stories, videos and final exam covering federal, state and local boating laws; required safety equipment; safe boating; basic navigation; boating problems; moving and storage of boats.

Upon completion of the class students are awarded a certificate of completion and wallet card.

The certificate of completion is accepted by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources under the Illinois Boat Registration and Safety Act of 1978, which requires those 18 and younger to carry to operate a personal

watercraft or a motorboat on any public body of water in Illinois.

Park District sponsors beekeeping class GENEVA – The Geneva Park District is sponsoring a beginning beekeeping class, which will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and will continue for eight Tuesdays through March 11. Student-directed project seeking auditions ST. CHARLES – Self-Esteem for Life Foundation announced it will have a student-directed project, open to high school and college students. Students will build leadership skills and their resumes. This is also an

opportunity for actors to learn about the casting process and explore other careers in the theater world. Student directors should submit projects by email to info@selfoundation. org. Projects can include original works (10-minute time limit) or previously published scenes from plays, musicals, TV or film.

It is for those ages 6 and older, who will compete in snowshoe relays and other games, then toast the ‘closing ceremonies’ with hot chocolate. An innocent conversation about Idol Gives Back, a charitable campaign by the TV show “American Idol” to fund malaria nets in Africa, sparked a life-changing decision for Justin Ahrens.

“My daughter asked, ‘What is malaria, and why does Africa have so much difficulty?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know,’ ” said Ahrens, 41, a Batavia father of four. “So I started researching it.”

As he researched, Ahrens commented to a friend that he believed he was supposed to do something more with his life and through his company, Rule 29, a strategic creative firm in Geneva. And he knew that it had to do with Africa.

The friend urged him to speak to his son, who was working on a project to bring clean water to Ethiopia.

“It was the greatest sales pitch ever,” Ahrens said. “He said, ‘I can’t accept your handout – only if you agree to go with me.’ Not a day goes by that I don’t think about one of the kids that I met. I needed that.”

That was six years ago, and since then, Ahrens has been to Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan through Lifewater, a charity devoted to sponsoring clean water projects. He has filmed two documentaries, “This is My Home” and “This is My Normal.”

Now, he and a friend are going to ride bikes 1,000 miles from Boston to Chicago from Friday, May 30 to Friday, June 13 next year, hoping sponsors will pay $40 per mile to raise $40,000 for another clean water project in Uganda.

As if riding bikes 100 miles a day for 12 days is not strenuous enough, Ahrens said they will not buy water on the way. Instead, he said they will filter their drinking water on various stops and use the opportunity to reach out and raise awareness for the critical clean water needs elsewhere in the world.

“When I went to Uganda for the first time, and saw these water programs that really work – they are amazing,” Ahrens said. “When we were there, we went to old watering holes [that] were muddy and dirty and farm animals were doing their thing in it. And this is what they use to bathe, cook and drink – everything in that water.”

The program not only creates a clean water source by digging a well, it educates people on hygiene and how to maintain the well, he said.

Ahrens said he focuses on a quote from United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to inspire his mission: “We shall not finally defeat AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria or any of the other infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking water, sanitation and basic health care.”

“When I came back from Africa the first time, I had a hard time grappling with my normal versus their normal,” Ahrens said. “I just felt that I couldn’t not do something. I couldn’t ignore it. I decided I wanted to live my days more purposefully and more gratefully – and to see how we can do that both at work and at home.”

Holiday basketball camp begins next week CORNEAL STAINING While the corneal surface regenerates like skin, sometimes too many cells are shed, providing an opportunity for bacteria and other microorganisms to enter the eye. Anything that causes friction on the surface of the eye, from blinking to wearing contact lenses, can cause mild abrasions on the corneal surface called “corneal staining,” which is what is visible when fluorescein dye and a black light are used to examine the cornea. While corneal staining happens to everyone from time to time, those who wear soft contacts may be particularly susceptible if they do not regularly clean and replace their lenses.

Perhaps the most common is 3/9 staining (corneal staining in the peripheral cornea at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions).

P.S. Artificial tears are often used to clear up corneal staining caused by dry eye syndrome.

Shoe store owner retiring

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After 38 years in downtown Geneva selling shoes, Giesche Shoes owner Gregory Giesche and his brothers are looking to retire.

“My family has been selling shoes since 1892, and – before that – we were shoemakers,” Giesche said. “My two brothers and I – we’re all in our 60s.

They don’t have children, and I have one daughter and she is not interested. So, it’s time to retire.”

Giesche said if someone was interested, he would sell the business as well, but – if not – he would have a retirement sale once the building is sold.

The 4,150-square-foot building at 21 N. Fourth St. was just listed for sale at $799,000 with Real Estate Consultants Inc. of Barrington.

Giesche said the family at one time had six stores, but now have two.

The other store in Glen Ellyn is under contract for sale, Giesche said.

“I’m approaching it from this standpoint, that there is all kinds of space for lease in Geneva, but not that much for sale. I’m happy to lease it, but I stand a better chance selling it,” Giesche said. “Geneva has been very good to us. I had a lot of fun [selling shoes], but it’s time to move on.”

According to Geneva Township property records, the building was built in 1955 and has a 1,120-square foot basement.

It is a free-standing, single-story structure with masonry brick construction, ac-

cording to the listing agency.

Randy Kotwica of the listing agency said the building is in business zoning, with a lot of uses permitted, such as a showroom, another retail store, a restaurant or even a winery.

“It’s got potential for redevelopment,” Kotwica said.

“The building has a wide-open floor plan top and bottom. It has a large basement with the same footprint as the building itself. It has the potential for many different uses.”

Kotwica said the market was tough, but its location in Geneva and the building’s good condition all work in its favor.

“Downtown Geneva has a lot to offer, Kotwica said.

“That’s one of the best things going for it. And it’s a clean building, well-maintained, and it’s still occupied.”

That Giesche was selling the building and looking to retire was sad news to the Geneva Chamber of Commerce.

“I’m very sad to hear that,” chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said. “Giesche Shoes is an icon in Geneva. Greg Giesche was Chamber Member of the Year last year.”

As to what he might do in retirement, Giesche said for the time being, he plans to stay in Geneva.

“I’m going to try to do a few things I have not done in 40 years,” Giesche said. “Like go to Swedish Days and have a sandwich. Or go to the Christmas Walk. Or have a glass of wine at Festival of the Vine.

These have been around me all my life, but I’ve never been to any of them. I’ve always been in the store.”

between 2011 and 2012. The pertussis vaccine is offered to mothers and others in close contact with infants in an approach called “cocooning,” the release stated.

“Cocooning surrounds and protects infants from the disease until they have built up immunity through their own immunizations, which do not

start until two months of age,” Farrell said. The clinic was established to fill a gap when the Kane County Department of Health was restructured and stopped offering immunization clinics outside of its offices, Farrell said in the release.

GENEVA – Cadence Health Vaccine Clinic is expanding the kinds of immunizations it offers to eligible Kane County children and adults, according to a news release.

“We’ve added pertussis vaccinations due to an unsettling rise in the number of cases of what is known as whooping cough,” said Stephanie Farrell, a nurse in the health system’s

Community and Health Outreach Department, the release stated. Whooping cough is caused by a bacterial infection and is defined as persistent, violent and rapid coughing lasting at least two weeks. A highly contagious disease, whooping cough is spread by breathing in the bacteria expelled during a coughing fit or sneeze.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of cases in Illinois increased two-fold

GENEVA – Aldermen voted unanimously Dec. 16 to approve a resolution to direct staff seeking requests for proposals for consultant services to determine the eligibility of a new tax increment finance district.

A tax increment finance district is a development tool that freezes the assessed value of the designated area, then shifts property taxes generated from the improvements to specific public projects in the district such as infrastructure.

Under state law, TIF funds are set aside for specific projects paid off in 23 years.

The area to be studied by consultants includes all commercial property on State Street from the River to the western edge of the existing East State TIF – School Street – and all commercial zoned property north of Route 38.

These encompass two parcels north of Wall Street, and then south to city-owned property north of the railroad trestle.

Mayor Kevin Burns said the TIF study will allow the city and citizens to examine ways “to provide enhancements and additional development opportunities.”

A TIF study will take a minimum of six months, officials said.

According to the resolution, the maximum amount of debt expected to be issued for reimbursement from the TIF funds is $10 million.

Fifth Ward Alderman Craig Maladra questioned the inclusion of some residential properties in the area to be studied.

But Economic Development Director Ellen Divita said their inclusion is not just an issue of land use but of study area.

“Downtown does not exist in a vacuum,” Divita said.

“So all studies include a little bit of the neighborhood around.”

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said if a district is created, it will have no impact on individual property taxes.

“It’s not a zoning change,” McKittrick said. “What it’s doing is containing that increment of tax growth for use within that geographical area.”

bschory@shawmedia.com In a cost-cutting consolidation move, 37 of the TCF Bank branches located in Chicago-area and Northwest Indiana Jewel-Osco stores will be closed by the end of March, TCF National Bank announced Dec. 11.

The consolidation will affect five Kane County locations: 119 Randall Road, Batavia; 652 Kirk Road, St. Charles; 465 N. Route 47, Sugar Grove; 800 N. Main St., Elburn; and 375 Randall Road, South Elgin.

TCF Bank spokesman Mark Goldman said there was no “average” number of employees per branch bank, but that the consolidation will affect approximately 200 employees.

“It is our focus and intent to retain as many as possible

at TCF,” Goldman said. “We are working with them and encouraging them to apply for other positions.”

TCF is based in Wayzata, Minn., and is closing its downtown Minneapolis branch as well, the company announced in a statement. TCF has partnered with Jewel-Osco stores for the past 16 years, officials said.

TCF will remain the primary banking partner for Jewel, as it will be keeping 118 of its branch locations, Goldman said. In all, the bank currently has 199 branch locations in Illinois and Indiana.

“We have one of the largest bank footprints of any bank in the Chicago area,” Goldman said.

The decision to consolidate the branches was based on a comprehensive review of the TCF branch network to see

solidated and resources could be deployed in other products and services, Goldman said.

TCF added 52 ATMs at bus platforms in Chicago, he said.

“Another factor is the nature of how our customers bank is evolving,” Goldman said. “As more have the capability to do online and mobile banking through smartphone banking, the amount of foot traffic has decreased.”

TCF now offers mobile and Android applications for customers to use, so they see less need to go into a branch to do banking, he said.

A spokeswoman for Jewel did not return a voicemail message or an email requesting comment on the closures and whether the grocery company plans to have another bank step in after TCF leaves.

Batavia native uses childhood as inspiration for book

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Film and television screenwriter Kevin Jakubowski said his new novel, “8-Bit Christmas,” is “a love letter to Batavia in many ways.”

Jakubowski’s hometown of Batavia serves as the backdrop of his first book, which he describes as a comedic look at “kid pop culture” in the 1980s.

The story follows 9-year-old Jake Doyle who desperately wishes to get a new Nintendo Entertainment System for Kevin Christmas.

A “comedically tragic” accident involving a Nintendo system causes an uproar in Batavia, and parents are set on banning the gaming system from the city. So Doyle and his buddies set out to try to get their hands on a Nintendo system despite the obstacles.

“It’s sort of in the vein of the TV show ‘The Wonder Years,’ or the movies ‘A Christmas Story,’ ‘The Sandlot’ and ‘Stand By Me,’ – movies that are narrated by an older narrator looking back on his childhood,” he said. “It’s definitely inspired by my own childhood growing up in Batavia.”

Jakubowski said he considered changing the name of the town and setting the novel somewhere in the Chicago area, but decided against it.

“There was really no reason to,” he said. “I definitely poke fun at the town, but I feel like it’s my town. I feel like I’m almost poking fun at myself. ... It’s all lighthearted fun.”

Jakubowski is now working as a film and television screenwriter and lives in Santa Monica, Calif. He said this year, he has done most of his writing for Comedy Central’s “Brickleberry,” which is produced by comedian Daniel Tosh.

Jakubowski said he is also writing for shows on Nickelodeon that are now in the pilot stage.

He also co-wrote the comedy film “Assassination of a High School President,” starring Bruce Willis and Mischa Barton.

Jakubowski said he wanted to write “8-Bit Christmas” as a book, but hopes to turn it into a film.

“It was really fun for me to kind of flex a different creative muscle,” he said. “It was fun to find my voice in something that didn’t have to be as structured as a screen play.”

He said his own experiences growing up in the 1980s also inspired the novel, which hit shelves on Nov. 1.

Kids went to great lengths to get their hands on a Nintendo Entertainment System because “before then, there wasn’t anything as cool as that,” he said.

He noted one of his friends, who had never had a Nintendo Entertainment System as a child, purchased one when he turned 18 – long after more modern gaming consoles had been out.

“That’s the length people went to,” Jakubowski said. “People have such a reverence for Nintendo. It seemed to strike a chord.”

Schmidt to bring laughs to Zanies in St. Charles

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Less than three years after graduating from Bolingbrook High School in 1983, Lenny Schmidt was appearing at the highly respected The Comedy Store in Hollywood, Calif.

Along with doing stand-up comedy, Schmidt has appeared in such movies as “Joe Dirt” and “The Ugly Truth” and in television shows like “Bones,” “True Blood” and “Big Love.”

Schmidt, who now lives in Los Angeles, will be back in the area when he appears at Zanies at Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles, through Saturday, Dec. 28.

Eric Schelkopf: It seems like the Zanies club in St. Charles is a regular spot for you.

Lenny Schmidt: Yeah, I’ve been playing it for years. I taped my third CD there, actually. It’s a great room. I love

ES: What do you like about it?

LS: I’m from the area, so I get a ton of people that come up from Bolingbrook to see the shows.

And for a big room, you don’t lose the crowds. It feels like a small room.

I tend to go in the audience a lot and whip up the crowd, and it’s easier to do with an intimate crowd because they are all into it and listening.

I’m still just a blue collar guy from the Chicago area. Not a whole lot has changed for me, personality-wise.

So, basically it’s just a roomful of people like me. It feels like I am at home.

ES: What should people expect from the show?

LS: My whole act always revolves around real life and real-life situations, and what I’m going through. And what I talk about now is being a single dad, and that my kids are 2,000 miles away. I go back home to see them as much as I can. And that’s my life now.

ES: It seems like that would be material that a lot of people could relate to.

LS: Yeah, I think so. I got divorced a couple of years ago, and then you realize how many friends you have that are divorced or getting a divorce. I’ve always followed the stages of my life. I talked about

dating when I was single, and being married when I was married. A lot of times, it’s not the life you want, it’s the life you live. You find a way to adjust to the curves that you’re thrown in life, and go on.

And that’s kind of what I talk about on stage.

The showing of “It’s a

Tickets to “It’s a Wonderful Life” cost $7 and tickets to “A Christmas Story” cost $5.

ST. CHARLES – Crashing pins, clanging ball returns and flashy arcade sound effects all conspire to make noise an essential bowling backdrop.

At some houses, even extravagant carpeting seems to scream during the walk from the shoe rental station to the assigned lane.

St. Charles North boys bowlers don’t doubt things can get loud at St. Charles Bowl or elsewhere, but they also aren’t ones to raise their voices through the din. Senior leadership, as defined

by Isaac Marshall, happens subtly. Players-only meetings near the snack bar need not apply.

“To me, it’s just about getting the whole team together and making sure nobody is being upset, trying to get them excited to be here,” Marshall said. “Maybe giving some advice on their shot and making sure that they’re listening and just following directions from coach.”

In the handful of years since North, St. Charles East and Geneva made like their brethren to the bowling-loving west and added the sport to the extracurricular state, the North Stars boys have earned their share of accomplishments.

Marshall rolled a perfect 300 game at Rockford’s Don Marshall Lanes at a tournament in January. In 2011-12, the North Stars advanced to the second day of the 24-team state tournament behind a senior-heavy group.

After stumbling during the state series last season as a young team trying to find its way, North enters the winter with a quiet confidence. Marshall and fouryear teammate Bailey Sebas-

Like most teenagers, the North Stars veer off task from time to time, but don’t usually stray for long. Marshall and Ioriatti, Marshall’s assistant captain, need only point to a season-opening sweep of Bartlett to get North revved up again.

“A lot of the guys on the

team, pretty much everybody knows what they’re doing for the most part,” said Ioriatti, a junior. “So the main goal is to just make sure that everybody’s focused and in the zone and we’re bowling as best as we can, because everybody here’s got the potential to bowl 280.”

Short of tacking a flourescent-colored ad to the St. Charles Bowl bulletin board, coach Jeff Fett still wouldn’t mind a bigger rah-rah guy

on his side. Fett said it’s “really obvious” among bowler interactions when things are going well, but added the North Stars “tend to shut down a little bit” during adversity.

Maybe that’s by design.

“It’s not like we’ve got one standout guy and then four that are holding that one guy back,” Ioriatti said.

“Everybody’s at the same level, so that keeps a really nice, even team aspect to this sport that’s usually gen-

erally judged pretty individually.”

The IHSA added a regional component to the state series this season, decreasing the number of sectionals statewide but increasing from two to six the number of teams who advance from them.

More wiggle room figures to bode well for bowlers with a tendency to grow tight. As Fett hopes the North Stars will learn, there’s no harm in opening up a bit.
