The topic of domestic violence has been in the spotlight after the recent release of a video showing professional football player Ray Rice striking a woman, now his wife, in a casino elevator. But Mutual Ground Executive Director Michelle Meyer did not need to see that video to understand how serious the issue is.

Aurora-based Mutual Ground works to help victims of domestic violence.

“It’s good there was an outcry because people are now making more attention to the seriousness of domestic violence,” Meyer said. “It’s unfortunate to me that it took a TMZ video of Ray Rice knocking out his now wife to create a national outcry.”

Formed in 1975, Mutual Ground is one of the largest and oldest domestic violence/ sexual assault agencies in the state. Mutual Ground, a nonprofit organization, serves several communities in Kane County, including Geneva, Batavia, North Aurora, Elburn, Sugar Grove, Maple Park, Aurora, Montgomery and Oswego, along with all of Kendall County. All of its services are free and confidential.

The Elgin-based Community Crisis Center serves the northern part of Kane County, including St. Charles.

Meyer said she hopes the conversation will continue.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which evolved from the first Day of Unity, observed in October 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The intent was to connect advocates of battered women from across the nation, who were working to end violence against women and their children.

According to statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, and an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.

Ground’s services, with more than 400 of them being children, Meyer said.

“Domestic violence doesn’t involve just spouses,” she said.

“Domestic violence is a family or household member, not just intimate partners. It can be any family member that you are living with.”

Mutual Ground operates two hotlines, which are manned around the clock.

In 2013, Mutual Ground received more than 7,000 calls for information about domestic violence and sexual assault services, Meyer said.

In addition, Mutual Ground provided more than 1,700 programs in area schools focusing on domestic violence and dating violence along with sexual assault and sexual harassment.

The attention domestic violence is receiving these days might be making victims feel more comfortable about com-

ing forward. After Mutual Ground recently gave a presentation at a middle school, six students came forth to disclose situations that were going on in their lives revolving around domestic and sexual violence, Meyer said.

“We don’t normally have six kids that come forward at once after a presentation,” Meyer said. “I don’t know if that has anything to do with what is going on now and the higher attention that is being paid to domestic violence, but that was pretty shocking to me.”

When a domestic violence victim makes contact with Mutual Ground, one of the things the organization does is help the victim put together a safety plan, she said.

“It is never a victim’s fault, and I think we spend too much time wondering why a victim is staying or why a victim is in the situation and not as

much time why wondering why an offender is abusing the victim,” Meyer said. “Maybe somebody is going back to their abusive husband. We would implement a safety plan for that. We would put together a separate safety plan if that person was planning on leaving the offender.”

Ruth Glenn, executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, said she is pleased to see the attention being brought to the issue of domestic violence.

She said her organization these days is seeing more people seeking help.

Because her organization doesn’t provide direct services, it refers those people seeking help to local agencies that would serve them. She dismissed the idea that professional football players are more prone to domestic violence.

“I am not a subscriber to

[the idea that] because you are violent on the field, you are going to be automatically prone to violence,” Glenn said. “Domestic violence is about power and control over another individual. It is about gaining and maintaining and sustaining power and control over another individual. That’s why you most often see domestic violence as we define it with intimate relationships, intimate partners.”

Glenn said she hopes the actions taken against Rice – who was suspended indefinitely by the NFL – and other players involved in domestic violence incidents will help reduce the amount of domestic violence.

“If the result is that they’re changing their culture through the actions they are taking right now, I think the actions they’re taking right now are appropriate,” she said.

GENEVA – The city of Geneva will be searching for a new Economic Development Department director after director Ellen Divita announced her resignation in late September.

Divita, who Ellen has worked with Divita the city since 2008, accepted the community development director position with the city of DeKalb.

Divita’s last day is expected to be in late October, but a final date has not been determined, according to a news release issued by the city of Geneva.

The city is working on a recruitment profile and job description for the position, which should be posted to the city’s website at www.geneva. il.us in the coming weeks. Officials hope to select a new director later this year.

The Economic Development Department provides retention, recruitment and training resources to attract and help the city’s businesses.

The department also coordinates special-event permits, promotes tourism opportunities and distributes communication pieces to the city’s merchants and business owners.

After Divita leaves, the director responsibilities will be split between City Administrator Mary McKittrick and business development specialist Paul Evans until Divita’s replacement is hired.

Crews temporarily remove local lighthouse for restoration

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When work crews from the Kane County Forest Preserve removed the top of the lighthouse in Fabyan Forest Preserve on Sept.

23, it was just to see how it was made.

But once they took it off, it was apparent the rest could not remain, forest preserve spokeswoman Laurie Metan-

chuk said.

“It was not a planned removal,” Metanchuk said. “But once the top was removed, they were not comfortable leaving it, as it was not safe.”

Metanchuk said the lighthouse likely was built between 1912 and 1917, so after more than a century of braving the elements, it was in need of repair, with cracks in various spots. It appeared to be leaning.

The goal is to rebuild it, using as much of the former structure as possible and to install permanent interpretive signage that documents the former structure’s appearance and history, Metanchuk said.

Director of Planning and Development Jerry Culp said the restoration of the lighthouse was part of planned improvements to Fabyan Forest Preserve, 1925 S. Batavia Ave.

“It’s a solid concrete structure, about 28 feet high,” Culp said. “We’ll have our architects look at it and see how to rebuild it. We are taking pictures to document how it’s built.”

Architects will figure out how much it will cost to rebuild the lighthouse during the winter, with plans to have it rebuilt next spring, he said.

A temporary sign is posted about the restoration project.

As to why Col. George Fabyan – for whom the forest preserve is named – would have built a lighthouse on the Fox River is anybody’s guess, Metanchuk said.

“Col. Fabyan was eccentric – building a bear cage and Japanese gardens and a windmill – so the lighthouse is probably the least unusual,” Metanchuk said.

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said having Economic Development and the Finance departments across the street from city hall is more than an inconvenience.

“With Economic Development and Community Development right there provides better customer services and better communication,” McKittrick said. “A number of other communities have space crunch horror stories about how disjointed it is. … Meeting at the moment makes all the difference in the world.”

McKittrick said she was not coming to aldermen to say there was an emergency, but for long-term planning as described in the city’s strategic plan.

City resident Colin Campbell said the former DuPage Library System building at 127 S. First St., Geneva was recently bought by Batavia Enterprises.

Campbell said the three story building has enough room “that would serve all city hall needs forever and ever.” He suggested officials talk to the developer about leasing the building with an option to buy.

By consensus, aldermen told McKittrick to postpone any planning by six months.

In terms of home rule discussion, aldermen decided they wanted a program to provide them with more education about it.

Home rule units of government can regulate and impose taxes, among other expanded powers.

Municipalities become home rule when their population reaches 25,000 or by referendum. Geneva’s population is about 22,000.

Mayor Kevin Burns said the possibility of imposing more property tax is what stopped City Council support when the issue was considered in 2006.

“The last time we took the temperature of the community, it was, ‘We don’t trust you,’” Burns said.

ST. CHARLES – As a ceremony began Sept. 20 to rededicate the southern portion of Langum Park as Camp Kane, Capt. Jeff Johnson of the 8th Illinois Calvary noted the history of the 20-acre site.

Soldiers in the 8th and 17th Illinois Calvaries used the parcel – which is along Route 25 in St. Charles – for training during the Civil War. Johnson said Lt. Marcellus Jones of the 8th Illinois Calvary is credited for firing the first shot in the Battle of Gettysburg.

“That’s how close you are to the Civil War,” Johnson said.

The Sept. 20 ceremony brought attendees closer to that era, as Johnson and other re-enactors were dressed in Civil War-era uniforms and actors portrayed President Abraham Lincoln and St. Charles resident Col. John Farnsworth, who was a congressman, abolitionist and close confidante of Lincoln’s.

Kim Malay, president of the Camp Kane Heritage Foundation, said the rededication was hosted Sept. 20 because Sept.

18 marked its 153rd anniversary. She thanked various city representatives, including members of the City Council, for their support.

“It was because of them that we were able to make this happen today,” she said.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said the community sometimes takes its history for granted. He summarized Camp Kane’s significance in a proclamation the council re-

cently approved.

“Col. Farnsworth used the property he owned that is now known as Langum Park to develop Camp Kane. ... This was the only Civil War training camp in Kane County, and it remained active until early 1864,” Rogina said.

After the rededication, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was hosted for the Jones Law Office, which recently moved to Langum Park.

“This was the first law office in St. Charles run by Steven S. Jones, who named St. Charles, and it served as a holding cell for deserters during the Civil War,” Rogina said, reading from the proclamation.

“On Sept. 20, 2014, we honor all the men who served in the 8th and 17th Illinois Calvaries, as well as honor all the important St. Charles and national history that Camp Kane and the Jones Law Office represents.”

For Sycamore resident Karla Weir, the Sept. 20 events were personal. Her great-grandfather, Silas Dexter Wesson, was assigned to Company K of the 8th Illinois Calvary, she said. However, he did not participate in the Battle of Gettysburg because he had been wounded at Beverly Run, she said.

The rededication of Camp Kane was the first of a threephase project, Malay said. Other goals include constructing a memorial wall for Civil War veterans and building a facility focused on the Underground Railroad, she said.

GETTING A GOOD READ It is important that you clearly communicate your vision needs to the optical specialist when being fitted for bifocals. By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Rick Splittgerber’s job could take him from Wasco to Algonquin on an all-terrain vehicle one day, and then pulling over a suspected drunken driver at the Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve in South Elgin the next.

“If you like the outdoors, this job’s for you,” Splittgerber said.

The job is that of a Kane County Forest Preserve District police officer. Splittgerber is one of four full-time officers in the Kane County Forest Preserve’s Public Safety Department, which includes a sergeant, a chief and about 20 part-time officers.

Splittgerber also is one of the department’s two field training officers.

The department’s mission is to preserve and protect the nature of Kane County, as well as ensure a safe, family environment. To do this, the department’s police officers patrol the 20,000-plus acres of preserve property in eighthour shifts.

There usually are two patrol officers a shift, and they will divide up their patrol, with one officer taking the northern half of the county and the other officer in the southern half, Splittgerber said.

Splittgerber was monitoring fishing licenses and poles. officers are fully uniformed and armed. But they also utilize various modes of transportation depending on the preserve. In addition to the ATV, Splittgerber could be found in a sport utility vehicle or simply on foot navigating the county’s vast trails.

“We deal with conservation issues throughout our properties,” Splittgerber said.

Springs and summers are spent regulating boating, fishing, dogs at large and preventing swimming, since it isn’t allowed in any preserves, Splittgerber said. Officers are on the lookout for hunters in the fall, then in the winter,

they hit the trails on snowmobiles.

No matter the season, Splittgerber is at home out in the elements. He grew up traveling to different lakes in Wisconsin, the state where he would hunt and fish. Splittgerber also was a plant and soil science major at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and received his master’s degree in criminal justice at Boston University.

“I get paid for something that I love to do,” Splittgerber said.

On slower days, Splittgerber checks to make sure buildings are secured on preserve

property and also builds connections and contacts with preserve patrons. Visitors who frequent the preserve can provide invaluable information on what’s going on in the area, Splittgerber said.

The public safety department has investigated various crimes in the past, such as domestic battery and drug issues. If there is a case of a suspected marijuana-growing operation, Splittgerber said the department can call upon other agencies, such as the Civil Air Division, to do a flyover to spot any illegal activity.

The department in the past few years also employed mobile cameras that help the officers keep surveillance of preserve property when they are not there. The cameras are moved to preserve locations the department is concerned about, or where any suspicious activity might have been reported, Splittgerber said.

Forest preserve police officers bring a variety of expertise from their previous and current work with other police departments. Splittgerber, for example, is a member of the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, as well as a parttime officer and 22-year-veteran of the Sugar Grove Police Department.

“We’re like an encyclopedia of knowledge,” Splittgerber said.

The southeast corner of the Kane County Morgue shows where workers removed walls and drywall during the remodel. Work began this week to remodel and gut the morgue and have it ready by Christmas or New Year’s, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

“We are just trying to retrofit something in here to get us through the next five years using the existing facilities,” Russell said. “The building is not big enough, but what we’re basically going to be doing is replacing what we have.”

Though the morgue will not have more capacity, the new cooler-freezer combination will be something that can be removed and expanded into a new building.

“I told the Judicial and Public Safety Committee that we could make it here another five years, in this building, limping along, but that we need to be walking into a new building in five years,” Russell said. “It’s not just the age of the building, but the space here. We can’t really expand anywhere.”

GENEVA – Kane County is getting a renovated morgue, as crews began work in late September to gut and remodel it, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

The morgue temporarily closed in June because of mold contamination and autopsies have been outsourced to the DuPage County Morgue.

Ongoing tension between Russell and Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen in the past months appeared to have thawed a bit in late September. Russell said he met in a private session with the chairman, along with Chief Deputy Coroner Loren Carrera and Operations Staff Executive Donald Biggs, and they worked out some common goals.

“We discussed what it would take to get the morgue open, and we got a list of things we agreed on fixing,” Russell said. “We do not have final numbers, but $76,000 was already budgeted for the freezer-cooler combination.”

Russell said final construction costs have not yet been figured out.

(a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process.

(2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law.

(3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings.

(4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution.

(5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing.

(6) (5) The right to be notified of information about the conviction, the sentence, the imprisonment, and the release of the accused.

(7) (6) The right to timely disposition of the case following the arrest of the accused.

(8) (7) The right to be reasonably protected from the accused throughout the criminal justice process.

(9) The right to have the safety of the victim and the victim’s family considered in denying or fixing the amount of bail, determining whether to release the defendant, and setting conditions of release after arrest and conviction.

(10) (8) The right to be present at the trial and all other court proceedings on the same basis as the accused, unless the victim is to testify and the court determines that the victim’s testimony would be materially affected if the victim hears other testimony at the trial.

(11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice.

(12) (10) The right to restitution. (b) The victim has standing to assert the rights enumerated in subsection (a) in any court exercising jurisdiction over the case. The court shall promptly rule on a victim’s request.

The victim does not have party status. The accused does not have standing to assert the rights of a victim. The court shall not appoint an attorney for the victim under this Section. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to alter the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the prosecuting attorney The General Assembly may provide by law for the enforcement of this Section. (c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse.

2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing.

3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen.

The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information.

2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction.

3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense.

The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

Facility to give officers more training opportunities

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – With the unveiling of its new shooting range Sept. 25, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office announced a state-of-the-art regional training center for all of the county’s law enforcement community to use.

“This is very exciting for us,” Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said to a crowd of law-enforcement representatives and county officials as the new facility, adjacent to the sheriff’s main facility, was presented.

Perez said after the old facility on Fabyan Parkway was rendered unusable because of flooding, the department relied on the St. Charles Police Department’s training facility.

The new shooting range has room for 15 officers to shoot, a storage area, another area for officers to clean their guns and an air-handling system that pulls out all the residue from shooting, cleans and recycles it.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the first responsibility to the citizens is public safety, and he thanked Kane County Board members who supported the project.

came in $500 under budget, and he said it was finished in four months instead of five.

“We were able to add some

Peeler also praised the Kane County Board for approving a project as essential to safety.

“The most important thing is the ability to train,” Peeler said. “Because the bottom line is, you don’t want a police officer that comes in and qualifies once a year. You want a police officer that’s training throughout the year, maintaining those skill levels – because shooting is a perishable skill.”

Ongoing training is essential to saving lives, Peeler said.

“If you had to bet your life in shooting basketball, and you didn’t shoot but once a year, would you want that person coming to save your life? Absolutely not,” Peeler said. “You want someone that maintains a training regime throughout the year, keeps those skills up at the highest level, especially when it comes to saving someone’s life, which is basically what our job is.”

Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said the shooting range “will be very beneficial to all of the agencies in the area.”

“And I appreciate the fact that they are offering it to other law-enforcement agencies,” Nash said.

Perez said the money to build the new range was generated from housing federal inmates from the Metropolitan Correctional Center for the U.S. Marshal’s Service. In the last two years, that service generated $2.1 million and $2.7 million in revenue, so the shooting range was built without tax dollars or borrowing money, Perez said.

Riverside Pizza & Pub making name for itself Restaurant opened in July in downtown St. Charles

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Riverside Pizza & Pub owner/president Steve Nilles never knows who is going to walk into his restaurant next.

Country singer-songwriter Vince Gill recently paid a visit to the restaurant. Gill performed in September at the Arcada Theatre, which is located across Main Street from Riverside Pub. “He was very friendly,” Nilles said. “I got a picture with him.”

Riverside Pizza & Pub is trying to make a name for itself after opening in late July in the former Pi Pizza Perfection space at 102 E. Main St. in downtown St. Charles.

However, it seems the historic building in which the restaurant is located, already has an infamous past.

According to St. Charles Heritage Center records, the building housed the first medical school in Illinois – the Franklin Medical School – founded in 1842 in St. Charles.

Dr. George Richards was director of the school, which was the cause of a 1849 riot in St. Charles, known as the “Richards Riot,” historical records state.

According to the records, late one evening in April 1849, two medical students from the school, John Rood and George Richards Jr. (son of the director), stole a cadaver from a Sycamore graveyard. An angry mob of more than 100 Sycamore residents went to the home of Dr. Richards, demanding the return of the body, which caused a riot, and resulted in the death of Rood and Dr. Richards, records state.

Some of the pub’s drink specials, such as The Witch Doctor, Doctor Richard RX Remedy and The Grave Digger, reflect the building’s history.

Nilles is not new to the restaurant industry. He has been in the restaurant business for more than 20 years, having started as a delivery driver.

Riverside Pizza & Pub is the fourth restaurant that he has owned. Nilles has two partners in the business. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner.

“We were looking for a bigger sit-down restaurant with a bar,” Nilles said. “We liked the location.”

They did six months worth of renovations, including building a bar on the building’s first floor.

Bars are now on both floors of the building.

Riverside Pizza & Pub has seating for 60 people on its first floor and 100 people on its second floor. The second floor also offers an expansive view of the city’s downtown.

“I really think we have the best view in town, of any restaurant at least,” Nilles said.

Living up to its name, Riverside Pizza & Pub sells several specialty pizzas, including western – topped with sausage, onion, bacon and barbecue sauce; barbecue chicken – chicken, red onion and barbecue sauce; and Italian beef grinder – Italian beef, giardiniera and red onion.

“Our burgers are never frozen and are 100 percent Angus beef,” he said. “They have great flavor.”

Desserts are also on the menu. The restaurant’s cheese cakes and carrot cakes are made by Cookie Dough Creations in Naperville, Nilles said.

Nilles said the restaurant’s mission is simple.

“We want to provide a comfortable atmosphere, and good food at good prices,” he said.

Difference in soil, elevation produces two distinct wines Pierre Seillan wanted to highlight the unique soils of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley.

Thus, two vials of soil were packaged with Anakota Cabernet Sauvignon. A reddish brown vial with tiny pebbles and silty soil from the Helena Dakota Vineyard at 750 feet and a vial filled yellow-white sandy gravel from the 950-foot Helena Montana Vineyard.

The difference in soil, elevation and aspect ratio to the sun has produced two dramatically complex wines. Both stunningly different despite coming from neighboring vineyards in Sonoma County.

Winemaker spotlight Pierre Seillan had established a distinguished reputation as a vigneron in France.

Yet, when he came to California, it was for a challenge. Despite the rugged mountain ranges, he saw an untapped potential in Knights Valley and the chance to craft a top cabernet sauvignon in what is his only single vineyard, variety and appellation wine.

“I have learned a lot from my experiences in France,” Seillan said.

“Starting with my family’s farm in the Gers, then working with cabernet franc in the Loire, and working in the different appellations of Bordeaux.

“I learned a lot about different climates and different soils, so when I came to California, I understood very quickly the diversity of terroirs that were available. Especially in Sonoma.

And from my experiences in France, I was able to understand the complexities and develop my micro-cru philosophy, in order to match each soil type and terroir with the right kind of grapes.”

The distinct characteristics of mountain fruit is amazingly apparent in Anakota. Both wines have a great minerality that frames their fruit flavors. The aspect ratio to the sun has made the skins hearty and the tannins bold, yet elegant.

Each wine can be enjoyed immediately, but after enjoying them side-byside one night, my desire to revisit the Helena Montana bottling after several years of cellaring grew. Two more bottles rest in my cellar, to be opened for a special occasion, at a later date.

“The two micro terroirs, are not far from each other but they have a natural border with a small creek coming down from Mount St. Helena,” Seillan said. “It is important to consider and respect the messages given by these two micro-crus, Dakota has an elevation of 700 feet on a rocky clay and iron soils.

“Montana is 950 elevation on a very poor soil with a lot of white volcanic ash. The distance between these two vineyards is about 200 yards and the

I usually pick this cru about five to six days before Dakota. I am very happy that I can create these two beautiful wines, which capture the message of these two special places.”

During one weekend last March, Sonoma County received 10 inches of rain.

“The rain came at the right time,” said winemaker Greg Stach. California was entering its third straight year of drought, which has led to harvest being two to three weeks ahead of schedule.

What to buy Anakota, Knights Valley, Helena Montana Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 ($75): Mint, eucalyptus and green pepper notes on the nose. There’s hidden fruit flavors that need time to develop. There’s a dusty, chalky note that adds to the mysterious complexity of the wine. A brilliant wine that will get better with age. It is grown at an elevation of 950 feet in yellow-white, sandy, gravely loam soils.

Anakota, Knights Valley, Helena Dakota Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 ($75): Cassis and currant flavors on a fruitier more floral wine. There’s a snappy, violet perfume on the nose. Lighter in mouth feel. It is grown at an elevation of 750 feet in reddish-brown, silt loam soils.

Landmark Vineyards, Overlook Chardonnay, 2012 ($23.99): A beautiful mix of cool-climate chardonnay from 22 vineyards that stretch from Sonoma in the north to Santa Barbara in the south. There are lemon grass, grapefruit and cantaloupe flavors held together by a nutty nuance imparted by the fermentation in 100 percent French oak barrels with all native yeasts.

“This is a wine that’s really all about blending,” said winemaker Greg Stach, who enjoys the wine best with lobster and Dungeness crab. “The French barrels are only 25 percent new because we want to show the fruit. It’s all about elegance and balance. It’s not too oaky or buttery. Its acid profile is nice which lifts the minerality and gives a nice, crisp structure.”

Magnificent Wine Company, Columbia Valley Syrah, 2008 ($19.99): A beautiful, silky mouth feel for a syrah. Olive tapenade, leather, iron and plums hang on for a long finish.

Papillon, Napa Valley, 2010 ($79.99): Dense purple in the glass, this is a bold, masculine wine. Currant, cassis and cedar are omnipresent immediately. Black cherry and cocoa powder on a long finish.

This wine is 60 percent cabernet sauvignon, 37 percent merlot with a touch of petite verdot and malbec.

East volleyball grabs, sustains momentum against Geneva

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East girls volleyball team that ended the first game was the same one that stepped onto the floor to begin Game 2.

That turned out to be a bad deal for Geneva on Sept. 30 as the host Saints won a showdown of the last two conference unbeatens in the Upstate Eight’s River Division, downing the Vikings 25-22, 25-15.

Trailing 22-19 in Game 1, East reeled off six straight points to seize momentum, the last five of which with senior Megan Schildmeyer at the service line.

“One big thing that we talked about in our huddle after the first game was keep it up, the same intensity that we ended the last game with,” Schildmeyer said. “We had the momentum and it showed. We kind of kept it the whole way through.”

“We got kills from our middles, right sides, outsides – everyone contributed,” Mosquera said. “It was great. We just kept on pushing and giving it our all, no matter who had the ball and who was hitting.”

Coach Kull called Geneva (16-3, 4-1 UEC River) an “outstanding” opponent, and while Geneva’s season to date bears that out, the Vikings didn’t look the part Sept. 30, particularly in Game 2.

“I think it comes down to our serve and pass,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said.

“We weren’t serving aggressively to take them out of system, and they were doing a nice job of taking us out of system.

“Last night was tough,” Schildmeyer said. “We played flat, we didn’t play how we wanted to. But I think what helped us play better is we were like ‘That’s not going to happen, we can’t play like that again.’ It was a good eye-opener for what we have to play like.”

East’s crosstown rival, St. Charles North, now will circle an Oct. 14 date with the Saints as an opportunity to forge a potential three-way tie atop the conference with Geneva, East and North. That match will be at East.
