GENEVA – Sometimes when visitors stop in at the Geneva History Center, they think it’s a visitor center, the chamber of commerce, a retail store – or they’re just looking for a restroom.

“You can see the confusion when they walk in our door,” history center director Terry Emma said at a city council meeting this week. “They walk in, and at the first set of doors there’s posters of community events. Now they’re even more confused – maybe this is a visitor center.”

As the interaction continues, visitors would be greeted by administrative assistant Vanessa Quillinan, Emma said, so then they think maybe they need to make an appointment.

“Or should they go into the gift shop and buy something?”

Emma said. “People had this look of ‘Where am I?’ So we started saying ‘Welcome to our museum.’ And then it’s, ‘Oh, thank you, now I know where I am.’ We looked up the definition of ‘museum’ and read it as a group. Yes we do that.”

So after beginning as the Geneva Historical Society, morphing into the Geneva History Center when it moved to Third Street 10 years ago from Wheeler Park, a third, more accurate identity will emerge: Geneva History Museum.

Emma said the organization is planning a gala event Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 to mark the anniversary on Third Street and to unveil its updated presence.

“The Geneva History Center does not mean a lot to the outside,” Emma said. “After evaluating ourselves using a museum assessment program, we need to be like everyone else. We will be the Geneva History Museum. Come see our new name, our new logo, our new look.”

Toward preparing for that anniversary, Emma said she and other staff and volunteers have been painting while the center is closed to the public.

It will liven us up on Third Street.”

Heidi Howlett, the center’s recently hired educator, said updating the gallery is the most exciting thing for her.

“The gallery ... has been the same for 10 years,” Howlett said. “We can have some new things people can learn about Geneva – and change it up every so often instead of every 10 years – like a real museum.”

Making adjustments The history center museum does not get public funds, but instead relies on donations, grants and gifts to maintain its archives, photos and exhibits – as well as its historic 1880s building.

Emma said the center received a Kane County River-

boat grant of $18,750 in 2011 to remove paint from an outside wall, tuck point the brick and put on a clear sealant. More recently, the center received a $14,000 Riverboat grant to fix the roof, as the all original clay tiles were crumbling and cracking. Kane County administers grants from its share of funds received from the riverboats in Elgin and Aurora.

“They were being patched with tar, and we were getting wasps inside,” Emma said.

“We own this building from the late 1800s, and we are in care of many items in our collection. We need to keep it secure or moisture will get in and cause other issues.”

The Fabyan Foundation helped with a $5,000 grant for five iPads for media stations.

“People will be able to interact with history and listen to audio and video recordings,” Emma said. “We can

even show some YouTube videos, to be more interactive.”

In October 2012, the Robinson Foundation, through the efforts of the Jaeger family after the death of board member Dick Jaeger, secured a $30,000 matching grant to redo the Geneva exhibit.

Not only were they able to match the grant, Emma said his widow, Norma Jaeger, gave them an additional $5,000. The history center used some of the money to work with Chicago Scenic Studios to help guide the redesign, she said.

A new feature still being worked on is a mini-Fargo Theater in a gallery with a marquee, Emma said. The theater marquee on State Street used to be the Fargo Theater, as it was known as the Fargo Building.

“We will be mimicking that same kind of marquee with theater seats,” Emma said. “It

will be in our exhibit in the back of the museum. We’re still working on details.”

Emma said the space will be ideal for historic Geneva clips.

Perhaps the most telling part of how the history center faced how it must change came from a self-assessment program through the American Alliance of Museums.

Emma said the organization was accepted into an eightweek self-study program requiring three hours per week.

“They made us look at our organization in so many ways. We visited [the center] as though we knew nothing about ourselves,” Emma said.

And that is how they realized their name was a problem.

“Starting from the outside, we had three potential failure points,” Emma said. “What the heck is a Geneva History Center?”

GENEVA – Geneva Library District trustees are considering the purchase of the former Sixth Street School, 210 S. Sixth St., Geneva, as a site for a new library.

Trustees this week discussed the site and approved hiring Polach Appraisal Group of Wheaton for $5,500 to do an appraisal of the property, which currently is owned

by Kane County.

The library district had planned to buy the property in 2004 for $1.02 million as a new library site, but county officials at the time did not finish the paperwork, and the deal did not go through.

The building currently houses the Regional Office of Education.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the county is ready to sell the building to the library district as part of a process to consolidate the space it uses.

“If the [library] board wants to go to that location, it seems like a wonderful place for a Geneva library,” Lauzen said. “I’d be delighted to work together with the library. I have respect and affection for [library board President] Esther Steel.”

The library has the right of first refusal when the county would sell the property. According to county records, the board formalized the library’s

right of first refusal Dec. 12, 1989. Lauzen said the county has not put the building on the market yet while waiting to see what the library district will do.

“There have been two previous – perhaps outdated – appraisals, and we are in the process right now of receiving the current appraisal,” Lauzen said. “How I understand this is supposed to work – we bring ours, they bring theirs and we sit down and come to an agreement.”

Lauzen said as the county is serious about selling the property, officials have given the library 60 days to get an appraisal and then to negotiate a sale price.

“If the library wants to move forward, we are very serious. We will do everything we can to accommodate them and be good public partners,” Lauzen said. “We all serve the same constituency. It’s a gorgeous, safe, centralized location, and I’m very happy to work for a good conclusion. If it does not meet their needs, we will offer it to somebody else.”

The regional school office would have to move, but Lauzen said to which county property is not established yet. The former school, built in 1924, is on a 90,000-square-foot lot with a 24,332-square-foot, three-story building.

“The cost of walnuts has gone up close to 300 percent.

Nobody is going to buy a $20 or $15 loaf of bread,” Kane said.

“When people are struggling, they’re going to buy it where it’s the cheapest.”

Kane said he even grinds his own flour for the 200 to 300 loaves he bakes every day.

Even at $5 to $8 a loaf, his margin is down to nothing at this point, he said.

“Is is really worth it getting up at 3 o’clock every morning?

No vacation in three years because I cannot afford to. I’ve got to work,” Kane said. “My wife and I are completely sad ... but I have to find a real job now.”

Kane said he spent 20 years in corporate marketing and he would try to return to that.

Six to join arts Hall of Fame

“It’s really a plus,” Shipperley said. “I see colors differently from other artists. I may not know exactly what colors I am using, but I know when they work.”

Shipperley, who loves painting landscapes and has the distinction of being the first awarde d s i g n a t u r e George member of the Shipperly Oil Pastel Society, received another honor Jan. 23 when he was named one of six inductees into the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame during a presentation at the Batavia Public Library.

The awards will be presented at an induction banquet celebration Thursday, May 1, at Villa Olivia, 1401 W. Lake St., Bartlett. The Hall of Fame honors and showcases the work and performances of artists associated with the Fox Valley who have achieved distinction nationally and internationally.

They have been presented every other year since 2002.

Shipperley said he was “humbled” when he learned he was to be inducted into the hall of fame.

“It is something I will remember the rest of my life,” he said. “You want to be appreciated as an artist. An artist wants to be recognized for their art.”

Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra conductor and music director Randal Swiggum was another induct- Randal ee. Under his Swiggum direction, the EYSO has performed with Midori and Yo-Yo Ma and

appeared at the Ravinia Festival.

“It’s a huge honor to be inducted,” Swiggum said. “It’s a privilege working with kids.

It’s a chance to introduce young people to life-changing music. I think it makes their life richer and better.”

here are many among us who struggle daily to find a sense of purpose and a clear direction in life. We may wonder what road we should travel down next. But not Jim Robertson of Geneva.

He’s found his special place in life, and now his mission is to share it with others.

It was more than 20 years ago when a friend Jim Robertson invited Robertson, who then owned a storage-solutions company, to join a group traveling to Alaska. He may have been a city boy from the South Side of Chicago, but he always enjoyed the outdoors and being in nature.

“I got off the plane in Anchorage, turned around and saw the Chugach Mountains,” Robertson said. “I was immediately taken by this place, hooked by its beauty and power. It’s just magical.”

He’s been sharing that magic for the last five years as a professional Alaskan adventure guide and a certified life coach with his company, More to Your Life.

Robertson leads his own eight- or nine-day tours in and around Valdez, Alaska, with small groups looking to truly experience the place.

The trips, offered from June 15 to Sept. 15, can be modified according to what people most want to see and do, but Robertson’s typical tour usually

Jim Fowler of St. Charles booked a trip with sons Dustin and Simon, daughter Randi, and his brother Mike Fowler, along with his daughter, Alexis.

“King salmon fishing was the bomb!”

Jim Fowler wrote in an email about the trip. “Many of the fish were over 30 pounds, and Randi got the monster catch of 42 pounds.”

Jim Fowler also enjoyed the other-worldly experience of kayaking into Prince William Sound among the floating icebergs.

Alexis Fowler loved sharing stories and dinners and desserts around the

fire while camping in the Alaskan wilderness.

“We could not have asked for better guides, chefs and accommodations on our trip, which absolutely was one of the best adventures and vacations that any of us had ever been on,” she said.

“Nature is perfect,” he said. “It has no agenda, no jealousy; it has no drive to be rich or use people. It’s indifferent to your presence and will do whatever it’s going to do. I think, personally, anybody who goes up to Alaska comes back different in some way.”

For the Fowlers, the Alaska adventure was one they’ll never forget – not only because of what they saw and did.

“The most important highlight of our trip was being there as a family, taking in this magnificent experience and breathtaking views together,” Jim Fowler said.

Escape to Parisian café at Chez Moi GENEVA – While the frigid cold swirled around outside, I was warming up with a hot vanilla latte, seated at a dainty table for two in a Parisian-style cafe – the perfect escape from a whirlwind of a winter and just what I needed to see me through the rest of the work day. The escape – Chez Moi. Chez Moi, which loosely translates to “my place” or “at home” in French, is a cutesy enclave in downtown Geneva that recently celebrated its two-year anniversary. Its owner, operator, designer and executive chef Beth Simone Cull studied at the Cordon Bleu Culinary School.

According to the Chez Moi website, Cull still travels back to France when she can, but – instead – brought a “slice of Paris a bit closer to home.”

Chez Moi is primarily a breakfast and lunch joint.

It can cater to the early morning on-the-go crowd and dine-in clientele. Menu items include breakfast sandwiches, ham-and-cheese croissants, crepes, French toast, galettes, quiches, sandwiches and salads. For the caffeine cravings, Chez Moi satisfies with an assortment of specialty drinks, espressos and cappuccinos, using coffee from PapaNicholas Coffee in Batavia.

My dining companion said she was happy to peruse a menu that offers items not easily found in the Fox Valley.

Walking through the heavy, steel grey curtains leading into the dining room, my dining companion and I were pleasantly surprised by the eatery’s inviting and “cute” decor. The exposed brick, ornate chandeliers and antique copper ceiling tile gave the room a vintage-chic feel. Seemingly, the front part of the restaurant’s interior is made to look like an outdoor café with light

from outside streaming in; outdoor café-style chairs; chalkboards reading the day’s specials; and a dessert display case for carry-out traffic. The elongated dining room devoid of windows is seemingly the “indoor” portion of the restaurant. It’s slightly more decorous and equipped with a bar (serving beer and wine) at the back of the room.

We ended the meal with the Chocolate Bread Pudding ($4.50). Warm, sweet and savory, the bread pudding had a chocolate-sauce drizzle that added a hint of bitterness to the sugar component.

Other notable menu items include the Breakfast Soup ($6), a chicken-broth based soup with bacon bits, crispy croutons and a poached egg; Crepes ($7) of the sweeter and more traditional variety, served with Nutella and/or banana or fresh berries and chantilly or cinnamon, sugar and toasted almonds; an Assorted Cheese Platter ($25) to sample with wine; Roasted Squash Salad ($10); and Quiche ($10) with salmon, arugula, Gruyère cheese and balsamic glaze.

Chez Moi also hosts an array of special events throughout the year, including wine tastings and public cooking classes. For example, the French eatery will host a cupcake-decorating and chocolate-truffle making class at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13. For $25 a person, attendees can enjoy a glass of wine and assorted small plates while decorating. (Reservations are required.)

St. Charles North 1st Annual Pennies 4 Pounds Lift-A-Thon

jschwab@shawmedia.com Rob Pomazak’s extensive strength and conditioning background was one of his chief selling points when St. Charles North hired him last year as the school’s new football coach.

Now, Pomazak plans to put his stamp on the school’s weightroom with a creative new fundraiser.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, Pomazak is helping oversee the school’s 1st Annual Pennies 4 Pounds Lift-A-Thon, in which dozens of North student-athletes will record lifts in the bench press, squat and power clean, with per-pound pledges helping raise money for what Pomazak envisions as substantial upgrades to North’s weightroom.

“When I got here in February, we came in and kind of took a look at the facility itself, and it’s a great space. There’s plenty of room. We’ve got these high ceilings – but really looking at one of the major needs we had is probably getting more racks,” Pomazak said. “When people see racks, they think of straight power lifting but in today’s day and age of strength and conditioning, racks can be used as self-contained areas for athletes to train. You can do a lot of station work at them.”

Pomazak emphasized the fundraiser is designed to benefit all North students and athletes, not only the football program. Creating a more versatile and inclusive weightroom is a central part of Pomazak’s goal in the coming years.

“A lot of our training was done in the hallways,” said Pomazak, who was strength and conditioning coordinator at Elk Grove and also holds those duties at North. “Kind of what we’re looking to do is make this a one-stop shop where you feel like you can have your whole program in here, and you can get everything that you need to do, whether your focus is

strength or endurance or if it’s speed and agility and quickness. We kind of want to make this room meet every single student-athlete’s needs, and I feel like right now maybe it only meets some of them.”

At least 60 North student-athletes are expected to participate in the Lift-A-Thon, representing several different sports.

North football junior running back Nick Edlund likes the creative approach the school is taking with the fundraiser.

“It’s definitely a lot more interesting, a lot more kind of motivating than just going doorto-door and just selling raffle tickets or something like that,” Edlund said. “You pretty much reel in how much money you lift that day. It’s an interesting twist to it and I think it motivates a lot more kids to try and challenge themselves to go and raise money for a good, winning program.”

North’s boosters organiza-

tion is helping orchestrate the event. Boosters president Tom Mullally said an event that benefits all of North’s programs is a natural extension of the school recently consolidating to a central boosters system rather than each sport having its own group.

“Being that it’s our inaugural, we’re certainly doing everything we can to shed as much light onto it as possible because I think if it’s successful this year, it gives us a great

foundation to build on it year over year,” Mullally said.

Batavia revamped its weight-training facility a few years ago, and the Bulldogs’ football program – coincidentally or not – has enjoyed a historically successful run since, including the school’s first football state championship this past season.

Referring to Batavia, Pomazak cited a “direct correlation between their physical strength and their emotional investment in their team.”

North has missed the playoffs four straight seasons, going 5-4 in Pomazak’s debut in 2013.

“I think that type of team-building is something that you just can’t replicate,” Pomazak said. “I really think if you get that in place and you get the equipment in place and kids start to buy into that atmosphere of this is the place where you do win championships, I think you’re only going to get more kids out for your program. I think you’re going to have stronger kids who are coming out and I think more committed kids.”

New gardeners should discover ‘The Old Farmer’s Almanac’

There’s a hole punched in the corner of “The Old Farmer’s Almanac for 2014.” It’s a nostalgic remnant of the homestead where it hung on the outhouse wall for reading material and toilet paper.

This is the very same annual that guided early American farmers, and it’s still just as important today, but for a whole new audience. Now backyard food growers can learn how to link sun, moon and stars, seasons and cycles and folklore into tending the sustainable home garden.

“The Old Farmer’s Almanac” is useful because it reminds you of planting dates and other important times in the agricultural year. It’s is a primer for new gardeners to discover the older, less expensive ways to get things done. Moreover, this annual details how astronomical happenings, such as moon phases, governed the tasks of the gardener-farmer’s world.

Why, you ask, is this important? That farmer used the old time methods of using phases of the moon to govern his work, and that helps gardeners, too.

It dictates the kind of tasks he performs in the waxing moon or a waning one, when the moon is full or there is no moon at all. The Almanac utilizes very old symbols for celestial goings on from day length to the sun’s position with signs of the Zodiac and many things other similar publications lack. The symbols were essential for illiterate farmers who could not read text but recognized the signs and knew what they mean.

The farmer’s monthly cycle is broken into four moon phases.

The new moon is called “the dark of the moon.” Soon after, the first sliver of moon appears, called the “fingernail” moon growing nightly until the first quarter is complete. This signals it is on the increase or “waxing” incrementally larger each night.

This continues through the end of the first quarter into the second, which ends in the full moon. Then the moon “wanes” or grows smaller each night until the third quarter is completed. In the fourth, you come around to the new moon again.

An old farmer’s rule is to plant crops that fruit above the ground while the moon is waxing. Then under a full moon all crops are planted. It was believed that the strength of the moon is greatest when full and would therefore bring more growth energy to seed germination. As the moon begins to wane planting continues through the third quarter, but only those plants which produce below ground such as turnip or potato.

The fourth quarter of the moon is a time of destruction and planting is forbidden. This

is when the farmer cuts his fence posts and firewood. He ploughed the fields and pulled weeds. Harvest also occurred in the dark of the moon.

Among other important information is sunrise, sunset and tides for every day of the year. Woven into these factoids are useful tips, handy examples and folklore from early farming practices that still ring true today. This year’s feature stories include an excellent primer on crop rotation in the home garden.
