At the top of village department wish lists for the 20142015 fiscal year are six new paramedic positions for Gurnee Fire Department, a new canine unit for Gurnee Police Department, an economic development coordinator for administration and upgrades to the village’s website management system.

board Feb. 24.

Notable expenditure increases in the next fiscal year may come from salary adjustments from new proposed positions. Decreases may occur with reduction of an associate planner position in the Community Development department, reduction of fire department over time, the completion of the Gurnee Mills Redevelopment Agreement and the reduction of three fleet vehicles.

Director of finance Diane Lembesis said Gurnee is well below its self-imposed debt limit, and will be making payments on three bond series in the next fiscal year, including

a $9 million bond series nicknamed the “Macy’s bonds.”

Community Development reports savings due to the associate planner leaving in June and no hiring of a replacement, said David Ziegler, community development director. They expect a drop in their department’s overall budget next year due to the elimination of that position and no longer attending an annual conference, he said.

Web-processing of permits is expected to go live on the village website in a few weeks, Ziegler said.

Public Works is over budget for fiscal year 2013/2014 due to this winter’s severe weather requiring overtime for plowing and using up the village’s salt supply, said Tom Rigwood, director of Public Works. Rigwood’s department wants to hire an in-house mechanic after a seven-month vacancy in that position.

Gurnee Police Department’s Chief Kevin Woodside said the cost of adding a second canine unit – just the dog

– would mostly be covered by grants.

“Our patrol shift is 12 hours and we have one canine unit – on any day, there’s a 50 percent chance that officer is working,” Woodside said.

“This would increase the chance of the canine being available.”

Right now, Gurnee relies on neighboring communities when its canine unit is not available, he said.

“Time is of the essence in a missing person or fugitive situation and having a dog available reduces response time,” Woodside said.

The police department is also asking for funds to cover the cost of a 911 consultant to evaluate how calls impact the village dispatch and bringing in strategic partners.

Gurnee Fire Department’s Deputy Chief John Kavanagh said having six new paramedics would give relief to their overworked staff and decrease injuries. Currently, the fire department has four firemedics on Workers Compensation.

GURNEE – Gurnee’s proposed budget is balanced and includes no new taxes or increase in tax rates for the fiscal year running May 1 through April 30, 2015, according to Pat Muetz, village administrator.

Projected revenues are $57.9 million while projected expenditures are $54.1 million. Revenues are projected to increase 7.9 percent, and expenditures are expected to decrease 3.7 percent.

According to a village report, “the budget includes intentional spend down of fund balance to help address needed capital improvements.

Despite the purposeful spend down in reserves, the village’s fund balances are strong.

“The General Fund is projected to have a $681,000 surplus in FY 2014/2015. The projected May 1 General Fund balance is $22.9 million, which is 63 percent of FY 2014/2015 expenditures, well over the 35 percent requirement set by

Eighth-graders get Taste of College

jcarpender@shawmedia.com GURNEE – Local students culminated a three-week Taste of College program with a taste of donated food at a reception March 4.

The crowd laughed when Woodland Middle School eighth-grader Ben Glende took a self-portrait on his cellphone after Principal Greg Meyer of Warren-Township High School O’Plaine campus handed Ben a certificate of achievement for completing the program.

Taste of College is intended to provide students with the opportunity to take classes and be exposed to area colleges in Lake County. Jennifer Bova, public information specialist for Woodland School District 50, said the program is designed for eighth-graders who would be first-generation college students.

Director of student services for Gurnee School District 56 Tami Kroc said 30 students from her district participated in the program. Bova said 50 Woodland School District students participated.

On Feb. 18 and 25 and March 4, the students attended classes at local institutions. They could attend a laser photonics class at the College of Lake County, a business career overview at DeVry University or a class on technology trends at University Center of Lake County.

Ben, who attended the laser photonics class, said college is a bigger environment and more hands-on than what he’s experienced in grade school.

He said he wants to go to the same college as his older brother.

Guest speakers including Mayor Kristina Kovarik and Jorge Nieto shared their own experiences with higher education and the importance of attending college.

interesting careers and which ones make a lot of money,” he said.

Woodland eighth-grader Kiyan Carre said the experience taught him that in college, “you’re responsible for your own education, and the foundations are based in high school rather than grade school. I want to go to college more than ever. I like a challenge.”

Kiyan’s grandmother, Juanita Cruz of Grayslake, said the presentation for parents was informative and helped to make her more aware of the benefits of college and what the application process is like now.

John Sarantakis, owner of People’s Choice Family Fun Center in Waukegan, said he’s been volunteering to help with the Taste of College reception for four years because as a self-made business man who didn’t get a degree, he feels it’s important to give students an extra push of encouragement and make them aware of their options in a hands-on way.

“Kids today think a degree will get them a big job, but when I interview people, it’s not just that they have a degree,” Sarantakis said. “It’s what they know about the world and what skills they have.”

The program was presented by the Gurnee Chamber of Commerce and the Business and Education Partners Program.

BEPP is a partnership between Woodland School District 50, Gurnee School District 56, Warren Township High School District 121 along with area businesses, colleges and universities formed in 2004 to support and promote public education in Lake County.

Bova said next year students will be able to talk to graduating high school students to evaluate if the program impacted their college decisions.

The nonprofit’s new location is currently in the build-out stage with an opening scheduled in May 2014.

Home of the Sparrow operates two shelters, 19 Affordable Housing Units and has recently implemented a Rapid Re-Housing program. One-hundred percent of the net income generated from the current five stores is used to support the agency.

With the expansion, Home of the Sparrow will be able to serve more than 220 homeless women and children in 2014. During the past three years, the number of homeless women and children served by Home of the Sparrow increased by 120 percent.

“If parties enter into a samesex marriage prior to June 1, and want those unions dissolved at some later date, what legal rights will both parties have in a court of law?” she

said. “Our concern is that one of them could attack the validity of the marriage, arguing that the [marriage] wasn’t valid to begin with since the law hadn’t taken effect [at the time of the union].”

For example, if both parties choose to dissolve the union, there is a custody battle or even a death of one of the partners.

“Your rights as a surviving spouse could be attacked by another party,” she said. “We’re not saying these things will happen, but we don’t want to give anyone a basis to try that.

“We don’t want to do something that causes problems in the future because we’re going beyond our authority on the state statute.”

One same-sex couple asked Helander if, like in the Cook County case, they could sue the county in order to be married prior to June 1, she said.

that her office would likely support any suit against a county that denied a same-sex license.

“I told them they can sue, but court cases take a while, and might not be resolved until after June 1,” Helander said, adding that the conversation was friendly.

One same-sex couple, married in another state, asked Helander’s office if they could be married in Lake County.

“You can’t get married to the same person twice, unless you have a dissolution,” she said.

After the March 18 elections couples joined in a civil union, regardless of sex, will be mailed a copy of the state statute and be offered the opportunity to convert their civil union into a marriage without any cost for up to 12 months after June 1, she said.

Marriages converted from civil unions will be effective the date of the civil union.

Same-sex couples wanting a marriage license in Lake County have been calling the county clerk’s office since a U.S. District Court judge ruled Feb. 21 that Cook County must issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples before the state law goes into effect this summer.

But couples in Lake County will have to wait until June 1, the effective date of the state law legalizing the practice, said Lake County Clerk Willard R. Helander.

Upon news of the Cook County case, Helander consulted the Lake County State’s Attorney office for legal guidance.

The Lake County State’s Attorney obtained the judge’s opinion in the Cook County case, and county officials found that the ruling did not apply to other counties, she said.

A letter from Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office, shared with county clerks throughout the state and dated March 4, said the decision to issue the licenses early was ultimately up to each county, but that “the protections guaranteed by the Constitution must exist without regard to county lines.”

She encouraged clerks to find the court decision “persuasive.”

Helander said legally her office does not have the authority to permit same-sex marriages within the county before the state-wide law goes into effect.

“I can’t be persuaded to do something because I think it’s right, because I don’t have the authority to do that,” Helander said. “I want to be very careful in any aspect of my job. The legislature is the law-making body, and they’ve told county clerks to start issuing [same-sex

The final Concert for Life, held March 7 at St. Paul the Apostle church, raised more than $33,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“While we said goodbye to the CFL in Gurnee in 2014, its legacy will continue in future events organized by Warren Township’s FBLA and through my music,” said Matt Wessel, a Warren Township High School alumnus who has been the featured musician for the fundraiser every year.

An annual event held at St. Paul the Apostle in Gurnee since 2001, Concert for Life raised $423,750 for the American Cancer Society since the first show.

Concert for Life grew from an effort by a small group of teens including Matt Wessel to help their friend, Kate Pedersen, who was lost to cancer, into an annual defining event for the Gurnee community.

During her junior year at Warren Township High School, Pedersen was diagnosed with cancer. Pedersen was a member of Future Business Leaders of America, and her fellow classmates and friends wanted to do something to help. FBLA continued to plan the event until 2014 to benefit the American Cancer Society in memory of Pedersen, who passed away in 2002.

“We accomplished a lot, and we’re ending it while it still means something,” Wessel said. “It doesn’t take much to make a difference and change the lives of others.”

“We did a simulation as if repairing a rocket in space.

Doing that made me realize how meticulous space missions are. Presenters told us about their experiences.

It’s very technical,” he said, adding that the presenters touched on how reality is nothing like the movie Gravity.

He learned the state of U.S. space programs is that while they aren’t sending people into space, they are sending robots and remote controlled robots. There are even plans of having people living on the moon in 20 years, Adamopoulos said.

“They taught us the aspects of rocket ships -- how big it is and how much thrust it needs, and seeing how big it was blew my mind,” Adamopoulos said. “It was at least four school buses in length.”

GURNEE – Warren Township High School junior Nikitas Adamopoulos was one of 13 Illinois students selected to attend Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. during the last week of February.

Fourteen Chicago-area students attended among 304 students from 38 countries and 33 U.S. states and territories.

“The international program is designed to build their leadership skills and to inspire the next generation of students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. It’s genuinely a life-changing event for these kids,” said Ross Moonie, public relations specialist for HCLA. HLCA includes shuttle missions, weightlessness training, simulated jet-fighter pilot training, scenario-based space-walking missions, designing, building and testing

of remarkable professional experiences.

While there, Adamopoulos won the Dave Cote Leadership Award during HLCA. Only one student gets this award each week for displaying excellent leadership skills.

Adamopoulos, 16, said he’s interested in engineering as part of Project Lead the Way classes at Warren Township High School’s Almond campus. He’s also interested in leadership and serves as a representative on Warren’s student council.

“This helped me build my leadership skills and took me out of my comfort zone,” said Adamopoulos, who applied to be considered for the camp.

Adamopoulos said he went on astronaut simulations similar to rollercoaster rides.

“I was afraid of heights. I’m not a fan of roller coasters,” he said, adding that Six Flags Great America didn’t prepare him for the experience.

He said working together as a team helped motivate him and his fellow students to give

Enroll Lake County! is the Lake County Health Department initiative to help residents navigate the online Health Care Marketplace to make informed choices about their medical insurance.

Smith of Lake Villa said she has a background in insurance and billing and wanted to help residents get insured.

Since the beginning of March, Smith and her team of navigators have been at Gurnee Mills entrances B and E, scheduling people for free personalized appointments at the mall. The team will also be there Friday and Saturday.

Smith shared what residents need to know about medical insurance enrollment with Gurnee Suburban Life reporter Jesse Carpender.

Big month for Warren Township High School March is a big month for Warren Township High school this year. The school will be partnering with St. Baldrick’s Foundation to raise funds for a good cause.

The high school also recently partnered with Lifesource, a Chicago-based blood collection organization.

St. Baldrick’s is a volunteer-driven charity that raises money to find cures for childhood cancers and support survivors to live long, healthy lives. This year’s event is March 20.

Each year, more than 175,000 kids are diagnosed STUDENT with childhood cancer, and one in five children diagnosed VOICE will not survive. Thus far, with the help of thousands of volunteers, St. Baldrick’s have raised over $127,543,680 in research grants for childhood cancers.

St. Baldrick’s main fundraising method is a head-shaving event, in which participants collect donations from the community, and on the day of the event, it’s off with their hair.

Warren alone raised an impressive $16,000 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation last year. This year, the goal is $20,000.

Warren senior Charmaine Chung said St. Baldrick’s has helped her both support the fight against childhood cancer and her own battles against her condition.

“I have trichotillomania (a compulsion to pull out one’s own hair),” Chung said. “By shaving my head, St. Baldrick’s has helped me to recover and raise money for children in need. It was the most freeing experience ever.”

Every two seconds someone is in need of blood, according to the nonprofit. More than 38 percent of Americans are eligible to donate; however, less than 10 percent of the national population do so.

The Lifesource blood center in Rosemont sees at least 1,000 donors in order to supply enough blood for the hospitals it supports. The company primarily gives collected blood from donors to patients in the Chicago area, and students feel that it gives them a bigger sense of accomplishment.

A two-time donor from Warren said, “I don’t know who will be the recipient, but when I think about all the people I love, I donate. It could be my dad, my brother or my friends who are in need. A little pinch in the arm is nothing in comparison to saving a life, and in this case, it is three.”

A big thank you to every donor and volunteers out there.

Whatever the contribution, it will not go to waste.

I’m appalled Shaw Media would endorse Bruce Rauner for the Republican governor nominee.

Veterans summit offers resources, hope SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA NORTH CHICAGO – Navy Veteran Joseph Yadron, dressed smartly in a suit and tie, hesitantly approached the podium, looked out at the supportive crowd of more than 150 people Feb. 26 in Bourke Hall at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, and shared his story of homelessness and recovery.

“I became homeless due to a long, long fight with un-medicated mental illness,” Yadron said. “I felt alone, worthless and on the brink of suicide.”

If not for the extensive help he received from Lovell FHCC and its community partners and local homeless advocates, he said, “I would have been dead in September of 2007.

“Through the programs in the VA [Department of Veterans Affairs], I am now a self-sustaining, clear-thinking individual living on my own.

And for this, I thank you all.”

Lovell FHCC’s annual Homeless Veterans Summit served as a stage for collaboration to continue the effort to end homelessness among veterans, a goal set by Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki. The deadline to meet the goal is the end of fiscal year 2015.

Veterans, Lovell FHCC employees and representatives from dozens of community, county and state organizations and agencies dedicated to ending veteran homelessness attended the event.

“Lovell FHCC is committed to ending veteran homelessness,” said Navy Capt. José Acosta, deputy director and commanding officer of Lovell FHCC. “We’ve adopted the VA’s ‘no wrong door’ policy.”

No wrong door means that all veterans seeking to prevent or exit homelessness must have

easy access to programs and services, Acosta said.

The afternoon’s events included a panel discussion with Lovell FHCC representatives and other community representatives involved in helping homeless veterans and veterans at risk of becoming homeless. A strategic planning ses-

sion and resource fair the last hour of the event served to connect social workers, advocates, health care professionals and others who provide services to Veterans and their families in Southeast Wisconsin and Northeast Illinois, with each other and with veterans in attendance.

Flood outlined the homeless veterans program at Lovell FHCC, which includes a recently opened Walk-in Center for Homeless Veterans located in the main hospital facility in North Chicago “It’s has been a huge success,” Flood said. “If a veteran shows up homeless today, we do everything we can to get them housing tonight. Word is getting out to the veterans that if they have any kind of question, they are likely to get it answered there.”

Flood said Lovell FHCC partners closely with the Lake County Veteran’s Assistance Commission to place Veterans in emergency and temporary housing.

Advocate doctor warns of spray tanning danger SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON – In the dead of winter, faux tanning has become popular. Since tanning beds are believed to cause skin cancer, many looking for a sunkissed glow turn to spray tanning.

Often found at hair salons or even stand-alone tanning salons, a tanning mist is sprayed out of jets that move up and down the body to apply the spray.

Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA,

Safety tips for spray tanning • Wear nose clips or hold your breath while you’re being sprayed. Don’t allow the mist to get into your lungs.

• Cover your eyes as best as possible.

• Keep your lips sealed and wipe them with a cloth. the active chemical used in spray tans, is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for external use, but it is not approved as an all-over spray. The FDA states that “DHA should not be inhaled, in-

gested or exposed to areas covered by mucous membranes including the lips, nose, and areas in and around the eye because the risks, if any, are unknown.”

With limited research and concerns from the FDA, experts

are beginning to question the potential negative health outcomes from inhaling the tanning spray.

Dr. Tracy Quinn, a family medicine physician at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital explains that with limited research, spray tanning could be more dangerous than currently known.

“When getting a spray tan, you inhale the chemicals that are absorbed in your lungs and carried into your blood stream,” Quinn said. “While we

don’t have research specifically about spray tanning, there is research showing the dangers of DHA, which can cause DNA damage.

“As always with something new, I would suggest caution and limiting the number of spray tans you get until more is known about the long-term effects of exposure and inhalation of DHA. I would strongly recommend pregnant women avoid spray tanning, particularly during the first trimester.”

WAUCONDA – Robert West has dedicated 40 years to spreading accurate information on Irish history. Before major holidays like St. Patrick’s Day, the 88-year-old Wauconda resident makes hundreds of copies of his histories on Irish enslavement, music and other topics to send off to newspapers and Irish organizations around the country.

In the basement of his Wauconda home, West’s office contains multiple file cabinets filled with histories and primary documents he uses to write his articles. The walls are lined with prints of Irish political posters dating back to when candidates’ head shots were drawn on silk in India ink.

“It’s important to note that the history books were written by Englishmen and Anglophiles,” said West. With Irish blood on both sides of his family, West makes it his goal to correct the misinformation he says many American children grow up learning in history classes.

Referring to the Great Hunger as the potato famine is a common mistake because the famine was really a political issue, West said.

“There was plenty of food in Ireland, but England shipped most of it out,” he said.

In a historical article on Irish music that West distributed for St. Patrick’s Day this year, he wrote: “The history of Ireland is told in song. …

In addition to incorporating yoga into the PE curriculum, classroom teachers were also given the opportunity to incorporate yoga in the classroom in order to give students “brain breaks” throughout the day.

Based upon numerous national-based researches on brain breaks and seeing the need for a more specialized and Woodland Primary-specific yoga video for students’ needs in the classroom, Conway approached Carrie Modra, a Woodland speech pathologist

and yoga instructor, to collaborate in a yoga video targeting Woodland Primary’s student population.

“I recognize and value the positive influence meditation and yoga can have on someone’s life,” Modra said. “As we discussed the needs of the students, we realized we needed to empower them with more than just a physical outlet. We looked at creating a tool to help them identify and deal with their feelings.”

The project manifested into a tool serving three purposes: to teach students strategies to identify and deal with their emotions, to provide strategies for individual students to utilize when they need to calm

down and to provide teachers a tool to offer a whole class brain break.

Each classroom teacher was provided with a copy of the book, Just Me and the Trees, by local author Julia Cohn.

“This book is a great tool for teaching children simple belly breathing and meditation,” Modra said. “The accompanying CD is narrated by the author in a calm, quieting tone, which is perfect for energetic 3- to 6-year-old children.”

The second tool was the introduction of the “North Pole” concept, defined as a small space teachers create in the classroom where a student can go to “cool down.” Each teacher was given a North Pole card

that helps students identify how they are feeling – mad, sad, or angry – cues to count to three, followed by making a choice of forming the child’s pose or listening to the Just Me and the Trees CD. The third tool was a three-minute “Yoga Brain Break” video featuring Wiley, the school’s mascot, and two kindergarten students.

The project was introduced to students in January. The “Yoga Brain Break” video was presented at the school’s Parent Involvement Night in February.

“I’m thrilled at the response we have received from students. They are enjoying this experience, and the benefits will impact their learning in a positive way,” Principal Stacey Anderson said.

“Not only will yoga benefit them in their academic growth, it can be a life tool for them to support their emotional needs.

It has been a learning experience for everyone involved.”

GAGES LAKE – What began as a simple project to help students at Woodland Primary School has evolved into a meditation tool for students and parents alike, according to a Woodland news release.

In 2012, physical education teacher Ashley Conway decided it was time to introduce yoga to Woodland Primary.

She wrote a grant to purchase yoga videos and materials.

“The need to increase students’ exposure to lifelong fitness activities at an early age as well as teaching them about flexibility, muscular strength and endurance as well as strategies to deal with various emotions was the driving force behind this grant,” Conway said.

Not only was yoga a huge success with the students in physical education, but was also shared with Woodland Primary families during the school’s open house.

More than 900 students compete in Olympiad event at CLC SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

About 900 middle and high school science students gathered March 8 at College of Lake County’s Grayslake campus for the Grayslake Regional Science Olympiad Competition.

With event titles such as Disease Detectives, Designer Genes, Rotor Egg Drop and Mission Possible, the events allowed students to do science experiments and participate in heated competitions.

The 2014 Science Olympiad culminated with an awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Center.

Some of the most popular events involved robots, a balsa helicopter and elastic launch glider.

Visitors were invited to watch these events at various locations on the Grayslake campus. College faculty members were involved in the competition as event supervisors, using their expertise in areas such as biology, chemistry lab, physics and geography.

The 13 participating high schools were Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary Grove, Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Hersey, Huntley, Lake Forest, Rolling Meadows, Stevenson and Warren.

ROUND LAKE BEACH – The International Children’s Film Fest, a touring festival of world-class children’s film programs, launches the 2014 festival season at the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center on Friday.

Seven screenings run between Friday and Sunday, and include programs tailored for children ages 2 through 10.

The festival showcases a total of 44 short films from 22 countries.

The festival will include lively short feature films as diverse as “Colored Pencils,” a Brazilian film about a boy’s magical drawings; “Monarch,” a Mexican film about migrating butterflies; the “Flap Crashers” from Denmark about a colorful bird who must overcome his fear of flying; and “One Shoe Blues” from the U.S., starring legendary blues man, B.B. King.

by Nicole Dreiske and presented by The Round Lake Beach Cultural Civic Center Foundation in collaboration with the International Children’s Media Center.

“The ICMC has culled some of the best of the best films made internationally to bring a truly exciting international film festival to families in Round Lake Beach and Lake County,” said Center Director Monica Marr. “We know that parents care about the quality of what their kids watch.

Brickwood Bar & Grille offers urban aesthetic FOX LAKE – On a dark and quiet Thursday evening, perfect for a date night, my date and I stepped off Nippersink Avenue and into the new restaurant occupying the corner across from the train tracks, Brickwood Bar & Grille.

A high-end steakhouse might seem like an odd choice for a space where other restaurants have failed – in a town known as a laid-back boating community. But we didn’t feel like we were in Fox Lake anymore. It was like we’d teleported to Liberyville, where this place would be nestled between boutiques. It had a downtown aesthetic with the exposed brick and fine art prints as decor.

We had the option of sitting near the bar or in the dining room and chose the latter.

There are plenty of tables for two, creating an intimate setting, especially when paired with the acoustic versions of pop songs playing in the background. Around us, couples talked quietly and a ladies night seemed to be happening at the table across from us.

The first thing we were handed was the wine menu.

We’d heard Brickwood had a good wine selection, and it certainly offered a lot of variety.

After sharing complimentary warm, fresh bread with butter, we ordered the calamari appetizer, and it arrived sizzling hot, breaded and soaked in marinara, with fresh lemon slices. My date was not a fan of still-tentacled calamari and went for the cut and breaded pieces. It was a generous size for two people, but we didn’t take long to decide we’d eat it all anyway.

Next came the sides for our main courses. I ordered the night’s special soup zuppa tuscana, creamy with bacon and potatoes. My companion had a salad with baby tomatoes and balsalmic dressing. The salad was fresh and the soup was hot.

time with the courses. The staff was attentive and refilled our drinks as needed, but they gave us and the other guests enough space to match the setting’s intimacy.

“This reminds me of my trip to Italy,” my date said, referencing the smell of wine and the decor. We could

almost forget that it was still chilly in Lake County. It seemed like the kind of place you’d go for a birthday or anniversary celebration.

My main course was the Baked Shrimp Dejohnge, soaked in butter and garlic.

There were seven nicely-baked shrimp that seemed

fresh enough to my tastes.

Each of our entrees came with a side of potato: sweet potatoes, cheesy potatoes, tater tots, baked potatoes or mashed potatoes. The sweet potato fries were hot and flavorful, but didn’t come with a dipping sauce.

My date ordered the 16-ounce New York strip steak, char-grilled and served with leafy spinach and a side of potato. She ordered it medium-well, and described it as “succulent, not dry.” She said the leafy spinach was marinated in just enough butter. As for the baked potato, she said it was standard and wished they offered twicebaked.

We decided to go for dessert. Although we were quite stuffed, we’d taken it slow enough to fit in a final course. We shared a New York Cheesecake drizzled in berry sauce, and it definitely surpassed grocery store cheesecake. After wrapping up leftovers, we stepped out of this urban otherworld and back into the breeze coming off Lakefront Park.

However, there was some swimming in the family. His father, Sean Zenner, swam for Wheeling High School.

“He taught me how,’’ Zenner said. “So, I joined the Waukegan Sea Horses when I was 10 years old. And then I realized I had a talent for it.”

While the Devils didn’t score any points at state this year, it was a fun year for Zenner.

“What a really good kid,’’ Bertana said. “He’s one of our captains. He was also a great leader and great teammate.”

Clearly the move to sprinter helped Zenner this winter.

“The 100 free was really exciting for me,’’ Zenner said.

The time to beat to make it to state in this event was 48.01.

Zenner was third in the race at Lake Forest with a time of 47.69 and qualified for state.

Back in his long distance days, he came close to make it to state in the 200 and 500 free races.

Zenner also runs cross country in the fall.

He’s swim instructor for the Gurnee Park District. He’s run five triathlons – swimming a mile, biking 24 miles and running a 10k race.

And, this all-around athlete has a plan for the future.

He plans on studying criminal justice at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He would also like to

join the ROTC while there.

Warren finished third at the Lake Forest Sectional, chalking up 203 points.

The Blue Devils also qualified the 200 medley for state.

Sean Stockwell was the fourth swimmer along with Zenner, Sanzgiri and Nash.

Their state-qualifying time was 1:37.52. Stockwell just missed in the 200 IM. The time to make it to state was 1:58.41. His time was 1:58.75.

Sanzgiri placed third in the 50 free. He made it state in this event (21.75). The 400 free relay team also made it to state.

This time Austin Salisbury joined Zenner, Nash and Sangiri as this team qualified with a time of 3:12.62.

GURNEE – It’s not often one sees an athlete excel at both swimming endurance and sprinting races – but Garrett Zenner does just that.

Zenner, Warren Township High School’s long-distance swimmer, is now participating in sprinting races.

“I had always done endurance races,’’ Zenner said. “And then my coach [Chris Bertana] stepped in and asked if I could do some sprinting.”

While swim season at Warren has ended, the goal at the beginning of the season was reached – getting the Blue Devils swimmers to

the state meet in Evanston.

Libertyville may have finished second in the state, but those Wildcats did not beat Warren’s 200 free relay team in the Lake Forest Regional.

Zenner teamed up with Ashwin Sanzgiri, Tanner Nash and Matthew Rastovac to nip Garrett the Wildcats in Zenner that race.

“Garrett’s split in the freestyle race was the fastest in Warren history,’’ Bertana said.

Zenner didn’t dive into swimming to start with.

Carmel girls wrap up impressive hoops season

editorial@lakecountysuburbanlife.com MUNDELEIN – Girls basketball has closed its door for another season in Lake County.

However, there were some splendid stories to tell. Like that team from Carmel Catholic High School.

You can name the stars from the past like the great Jenny Eckhart or even further back to Michelle Muellner and Stephanie Seier. Those gifted players did not have the same success the 2013-14 team did. Leading the pack was head coach Kelly Perz. She’s another one of those Carmel players from the past as the three Krombach girls (Kelly, Colleen and Kaitlin) were all excellent players.

Carmel’s run this season included winning a regional and then heading toward Chicago for the sectional at Norridge. There they handled a very good Antioch squad and then toppled top-seeded Vernon Hills to claim the first sectional trophy in school history.

In the spring we will see Carmel softball stars, Nicole Bitter (pitcher) and Kathleen Felicelli (shortstop). Those two guards were key players on this 24-9 team that ended its season on Monday night

Cassidy Kloss was an important 3-point shooter. Leah Lach could contribute in a number of ways. It didn’t help the cause that center Emma Rappe was hurt prior to the playoffs and couldn’t participate. The good news is she

will be back next season.

Both seniors, Paige Gauthier and Alexa Svoboda gave the Corsairs valuable minutes off the bench. Granted graduation will hurt this club. There were six seniors on the Corsairs. But with the athletic Emily Casale joining Rappe in the middle

means this club again will be tough.

If Carmel is the best team in the Lake County Suburban Life area, than sectional qualifier Antioch is No. 2.

Coach Tim Borries’ club won a school record 23 games this season. The Sequoits had a huge year out of senior Paige

Gallimore. She kind of took the area by storm with several high-scoring games. Don’t feel sorry for Antioch as they will be back. The twins, Ashley and Amy Reiser are only freshmen. Gifted guard, Alexis Duehr is only a sophomore.

We can take our pick of the Grayslake schools. Both the Rams and Knights had excellent years. OK, North won 20 and Central won 19.

The Knights had the one-two punch of outside shooter Kendall Detweiler and inside power, Brittney Thibeaux. The Rams had help from Morgan Dahlstrom, who could score from a variety of spots on the court. Carson Sparkman was another key Rams player.

Another 19-game winner came from Barrington. Coach Babbi Barriero’s club had help from Brooke Gunderson and Angie Kirchoff. Grant of Fox Lake won a dozen games.

Kaylee Kanzler and Jasmine Sangster were two key Bulldogs.

Speaking of the Bulldogs, Wauconda won 10 games as Lauren Nee had a strong campaign.

Warren may have struggled to win just nine games.

However, the Blue Devils had a strong player in Kristen O’Brien. Both Lakes and Round Lake won five games this season.
