COMMUNITY CORNER: PHOTOGRAPHY MINISTRY Photography is a ministry for Isabelle Gaultier, who donates her time to documenting student and parish life at St. Patrick Parish in Wadsworth.

Gaultier, a Waukegan resident, moved to the U.S. from France 20 years ago. “I don’t see myself as a volunteer, but it’s really a ministry, using my experience in photography for the service of my parish family,” she said.

Although she’s retired, Gaultier has supported St. Patrick School, 15020 W. Wadsworth Road, by working on the parish newsletter committee for the past few years.

For this special photo issue of Gurnee Suburban Life, Gaultier talked about her experiences as a local photographer with Gurnee Suburban Life reporter Jesse Carpender.

How did you get started in photography?

I never took classes. My first camera was very old, a mechanical Leica. I did black and white photography in France. In 1979, I bought an Olympus SLR. I took a lot of photos just for me and used photos for Christmas cards. I never made a cent doing photography.

What do you do for St. Patrick?

I’m leader of the photography ministry and maintain the library of photos for bulletins and newsletters. We live in an era where pictures are a thousand words, and our parishioners like to see them.

I look at key activities and schedule myself. I’m there [at the parish] a few times a week. I love the events with the school because the children have those very precious faces. Most of the time I’m

WHAT’S INSIDE What’s your favorite photo this year?

A photo of the back of the church with the fall leaves reflecting in the 13 glass windows. I was standing in the oak grove looking at the church, and the colors reflected brightly.

What have you learned from being an observer?

I realize the richness of the parish in terms of diversity. It’s a huge family with all ages, walks of life and people from different countries like me. It’s a blessing to record events and share them with the rest of the parish.

The picture of kindness Woodland students deliver portraits to Sunrise Senior Living residents

By JESSE CARPENDER jcarpender@shawmedia.com Being visited in a nursing home makes residents feel like people are thinking of them, that they aren’t in storage somewhere, said Rosalie Rita Seibel, a resident of Sunrise Senior Living in Gurnee.

“You just feel alive that someone’s thinking of you,” she said.

Woodland Elementary West art teacher Marion Beram said that’s exactly what she and two third-grade classes were going for when they hand-delivered portraits to Sunrise residents Dec. 18.

Fifty-three students sat on the floor of the activity room, holding the construction paper folders they made. Each folder contained a photo of a senior resident taken weeks before

A third-grader named Sam Cusumano began the exchanges by reading aloud his letter to Sunrise resident Bob McCann: “I hope you like my portrait.

I made it just for you. Your friend, Sam.” After Cusumano read his letter, the students began excitedly looking at their portraits and then around the room to see whether their resident was present. Meanwhile, Woodland teachers attempted to match students with their residents.

All around the room, students and residents shared smiles, laughs and hugs.

As McCann, 81, looked at the portrait by Cusumano, he said: “I didn’t think I was as handsome as that. I got a crooked nose, so I gotta face away so it don’t show up. We look forward to seeing kids; they’re a real joy. You can’t beat kids, they’re so full of energy.”’

The students worked on drawing and painting the portraits for about a month, said Alivia Latondress, a thirdgrade teacher. “They were very excited on the bus, saying things like ‘I hope she likes it.’ It’s wonderful that they’re giving back to the community, and it’s a special gift to the residents at Sunrise.”

Alivia Latondress Third-grade teacher at Woodland Elementary Third-grader Liam Hickey was looking around for a resident he’d drawn named Mandy, with short curly hair and large glasses. “I like to draw, and I’m excited to meet her,” he said.

His classmate Mia Pasha was looking for the same resident. “I can tell from the photo [the residents] are pretty old, but they’re each unique, and you can tell they’re going to be nice,” Mia said.

Some students’ residents weren’t present, while other students visited residents in their rooms.

When Liam and Mia found Mandy, she was standing with her walker near the entrance.

Mandy is a nickname for Rosalie Rita Seibel, based on her maiden name.

“You’re making my day. It’s

just perfect,” Seibel told Liam, Mia and two other students while reading their letters.

Art teacher Beram said Seibel was the only resident to receive more than one portrait. When Beram visited to take photos of the residents, Seibel’s three adult children were visiting and asked if they could each have a copy of their mother’s portrait.

“We had three more students than residents, so it worked out perfectly,” Beram said.

Beram was thrilled with the students’ and residents’ reactions.

“When I asked them what they learned, they said they learned how important it is to give to other people,” she said.

Photos by Jesse Carpender she always loved art but went into nursing. “My teacher said to me ‘You’ll never be an artist’ because I’d always put an ear or nose in the wrong place,” she told them. “I loved having you visit. Dream dreams and don’t be afraid of dreaming too hard.

Work hard like the Olympic athletes, and say, ‘I’m going to be just like them.’”

When the students left, Seibel said, “I love seeing the children’s bright eyes, smiling

faces and nice teeth. I was down in the dumps this morning, and I really wanted to see them.

We’ll be talking about that visit for the next week.

Gurnee’s ‘downtown’ has storied history Those of you who remember Rowan and Martin’s “Laugh In” may recall that it came to you from “Beautiful downtown Burbank.” I often affectionately refer to our section of Gurnee as “beautiful downtown Gurnee,” although we only live near the Village Center, not in the area once called the business district.

Gurnee does not really have a true downtown area. Of course, that doesn’t mean we have no place to shop. We have many strip malls, as well as the Gurnee Mills mega mall. You can shop till you drop at all sorts of department stores and specialty stores.

Still, those retail stores are spread out. Waukegan has a downtown, although it is nothing like it was in its heyday. Antioch, Grayslake, Zion and even Lake Villa have downtowns. Gurnee has a Village Center with businesses that are spread out along Old Grand Avenue and Grand Avenue (Illinois Route 132).

It wasn’t always like that.

Before Grand Avenue became a four-lane road, before mega malls, strip malls and business parks, Gurnee had a business district.

When I was a little girl living in Lake Villa, we’d travel through Gurnee many times during the year to go shopping in Waukegan and to visit relatives in Waukegan and North Chicago.

After crossing the Des Plaines River, there was a sign telling you that you were in the “business district.”

Being a little kid at the time, I really didn’t pay much attention to the businesses. My most vivid memory of Grand Avenue in Gurnee was one of the brick houses on the north side of the street, east of the businesses. They had the cutest little Christmas decoration over their front door. It was a Santa Claus and sleigh, and it moved so that the reindeer looked like they were flying. I was fascinated by it.

“new” Grand (the four-lane Route 132) bypassed the business district, so the little signs proclaiming its presence had more significance. I remember stores west of the river on Grand. Worth’s Standard Service Station was on the corner of what is now Illinois Route 21 and Grand Avenue. On the corner of Grand and Milwaukee Avenue was Happy Bill’s restaurant. In between were Valley Liquors, Triso Printing and Insurance, Maleck’s Grocery Store and later, Blames Florists.

In the business district itself were the Rustic Manor, the Dr. Schneider’s Dental Office, McCann’s Barbershop, Warren Township Offices and Gurley’s tavern.

The Depke building was on Old Grand (which ran between Grand and Kilbourne). The Village Hall, police and fire departments were all in the same building across the street from Gurnee Community Church.

McClure’s Garage was farther east, as was The Boat Show.

In what is now Viking Park was the Viking Hotel and nursing home. Depot Road had an actual train depot, and the lumber company was next to the station. Up on the hill, east of Depot Road next to J.J. Henderson’s was Welton’s I.G.A. and Gungler’s Pharmacy.

The principal of West Ridge School in Highland Park used to have me shop for him at Potter’s True Value Hardware Store; it was known as the store that had everything.

You couldn’t buy everything in those small businesses, but the owners knew your name and were ready to lend a helping hand, and customer service was superb.

What makes Sullivan Family Tree Farm unique?

It’s strictly a tree farm, worked by my family, including my son, daughters and nine grandchildren.

I think it’s a special place.

We’re more than just a tree lot. It’s a farm in the woods, with lots of cover and wildlife like coyotes, deer, hawks and rodents.

We have 18 acres of land, and about half of that is used for Christmas trees. The rest is open land.

We have hay rides, trails, open woods. It’s a nice place to spend the day when the weather’s good.

What kinds of trees do you grow?

It’s all spruce and pine. In the industry, balsam firs are the preferred Christmas tree, but firs don’t grow successfully in northern Illinois with our heavy topsoil.

How do most people shop for their tree?

Some people grab the first tree they see, but others will spend a lot of time picking it out. If they have a lot of kids, they’ll leave a kid to reserve a tree until they find the best one.

Which trees are lucky?

If you find a bird’s nest in a cut Christmas tree, that’s lucky and you should leave it there. The birds we see the most are finches and wrens, but only in the summertime.

The nests won’t have any eggs or young in the winter.

and tend to have branches farther apart in the middle, which is not what people typically want in a Christmas tree.

But some people like unsheared trees so they can hang decorations inside the tree.

Do Christmas trees grow in that perfect shape?

What’s a perfect tree for you?

No. There’s lots of work involved, from spraying [for pests], mowing weeds and shearing. We trim them to create dense growth.

Unsheared trees are wild

An 8-foot tree – anything taller requires a stepladder, and they’re heavy.

It has to be balanced so it doesn’t fall over, and have a good base. We have fake

trees at home because my grandchildren are sensitive to trees and animals.

What happens to the trees left behind?

They’re a foot taller next year. We’re never worried about an off year, and we don’t have to burn the trees like the ones sold on a corner lot.

How’s business this year?

The busiest weekend was after Thanksgiving. This year we only had four week-

ends after Thanksgiving.

We’ve sold about 100 trees.

We’re not a big-time operation, it’s more of a hobby. We see a lot of the same families year after year.

What makes your family’s tree unique?

My favorite family ornaments are from my years at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where I met my wife. We have ornaments of certain buildings or scenes on the campus, like the Alma Mater sculpture and the English building.

Ed Sullivan keeps the holiday spirit alive all year long as he tends to Christmas trees at his family farm in Lake Villa. December is the fun and easy part, when his family sells the trees on the weekends, he said.

Sullivan has owned the Christmas tree farm at 24774 W. Petite Lake Road since 1974 and has been selling trees for 15 years. A farmer at heart and veterinarian by trade, he’s owned practices around Lake County, including Mundelein Animal Hospital, now operated by his brother.

Shaw Media to buy The Herald-News SHAW MEDIA DIXON — Shaw Media announced Monday that it has agreed to acquire the assets of The Herald-News in Joliet from Sun-Times Media.

The purchase is expected to close during the first week of January. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Herald-News has been serving Joliet, Will County and Grundy County communities for more than 150 years and will continue as part of Shaw Media’s newspaper group.

“We are excited to bring The Herald-News into our established, and growing, family-owned media portfolio,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We expect to maintain the storied tradition of serving the Joliet region with a high-quality, community-oriented newspaper.”

“We have found a great buyer for The Herald-News

in Shaw Media,” said Tim Knight, president of SunTimes Media. “This sale will allow the Sun-Times to focus its resources on transforming its core products.”

Shaw Media, based in Dixon, is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated family media company in the nation.

It is the parent company of Suburban Life Media.

The purchase of The Herald-News adds to Shaw Media’s growing portfolio of publications in the Chicago suburbs.

It follows the 2012 purchase of Downer’s Grovebased Suburban Life Media, which added 22 weekly publications in Cook, DuPage, Kane and Will counties to the company’s award-winning publications in Crystal Lake, DeKalb, Dixon, Grayslake, Morris, Princeton, St. Charles and Sterling in Illinois, and in Newton and Creston in Iowa.

Shaw names 3 to vice president posts SHAW MEDIA DIXON – Shaw Media’s Board of Directors elected three executives to serve as vice presidents and officers of the company.

At its Dec. 12 meeting, the company elected Don T. Bricker vice president of suburban publishing, J. Tom Shaw vice president of digital media, and Ben Shaw vice president of technology.

Shaw Media is the parent company of Suburban Life Media.

“This is an exciting time for our company,” said John Rung, president of Shaw Media.

“We are fortunate to have many talented people in our company. We are particularly pleased that our Board of Directors has recognized Don, J. Tom and Ben with increased

J. Tom Shaw joined Shaw Media in 2006.

He has held a variety of posts, including publisher of Shaw’s Kane County, Lake County and Suburban Life publications. In the past few years, he has overseen the launch of numerous niche products in print and digital

In his new role, J. Tom Shaw will lead efforts to grow audience and sales through digital platforms across Shaw’s Illinois and Iowa operations.

Rung announced that a search for J. Tom Shaw’s replacement as publisher of Suburban Life Media would begin immediately.

The tricky thing about ice is that the thickness of the ice means very little when you are talking about its strength.

One needs to look at the consistency and structure of the ice to determine its strength capabilities.

Uniform crystal clear ice is the safest type of ice.

Generally speaking, new ice is much stronger than old ice.

Ice formed by the direct freezing of the water of a lake or stream will be stronger than ice formed by melting snow, refrozen ice or ice made by water that bubbled up through cracks and froze on the surface.

A few inches of new ice may be strong enough to support a person, while a foot or more of

old “rotten” ice may not be.

Snow on the ice will insulate the ice, slowing the ice-forming process.

The additional weight of the snow can also decrease the weight-bearing capacity of the ice.

Ice can be several inches thick in one spot yet only an inch thick nearby.

Ice is generally weaker near the shore.

Ice over moving water can be dangerous, especially near shore, around inflows and outflows, at bridges and on lakes with large numbers of springs.

Fluctuations in water level and the actions of birds and fish also can weaken ice.

Warren girls basketball off to slow start

By BILL PEMSTEIN editorial@gurneesuburbanlife.com Warren Township girls basketball coach John Stanczykiewicz is used to having some tall girls in his lineup.

From the days of Amy Peters to Sarah Boothe, it has made life easier for this coach.

The only tall girl on the present club is 6-footer Kristin Jacobs, who plays as a forward. But this Warren team isn’t small, as 12 of the players stand at least 5-foot-6.

It’s still early, but the Blue Devils won only three of their first 10 games. On Dec. 16, they were trailing visiting Lake Zurich by six points at halftime.

Led by the likes of Kylie Nedelka, Sammi Jo Nixon, Hailey Leinart and Kristen O’Brien, this team rallied to

One of those seniors is Hailey Leinart. She might be considered a basketball junkie.

However, she was injured in a trampoline accident and missed her junior season.

Her injury was severe, as she tore both her ACL and

MCL. Now healthy, Leinart led a balanced attack against Lake Zurich with 10 points. She also added four steals.

“I’m trying to work on my defense,’’ Leinart said. “And on offense, I’m trying not to rush my passes.”

Jacobs battled foul trouble against Lake Zurich but gave the Devils six points and three rebounds.

“That was good to see,’’ Stanczykiewicz said. “With her size, we get some good matchups.”

The freshman Foley checked in with six points and five rebounds.

“She gave us some good minutes,’’ Stanczykiewicz said.

It seems this team is also up to good things in the classroom.

Blue Devils Classic The annual tournament at Warren Township is back for another season. It runs through Dec. 28. Guests include Wheeling, Grayslake Central, Palatine, Carmel and Deerfield.

“Some of my girls are taking an extra load, and we are taking finals,’’ Stanczykiewicz said. “[O’Brien] will [be] up to 2 a.m. studying.”

On the court, the Blue Devils struggled early. Particularly frustrating was a 57-12 loss to New Trier on Nov. 29. In fact, Warren had a six-game losing streak before toppling Lake Forest, 48-27, on Dec. 12.

Also on the team are Atianna Bey-Wrey, Paige Prokof, Brenna Booth, Danielle Cassidy and Keely Knobbe.

Law bans use of hand-held cellphones while driving GURNEE SUBURBAN LIFE A new state law, starting Jan. 1, prohibits all drivers from using hand-held cellphones while driving.

Under House Bill 1247, Illinois will join 11 other states by prohibiting the use of electronic communication devices while driving.

Cmdr. William Meyer with the Gurnee Police Department said, “Distracted driving has become a very dangerous habit on our roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Administration in 2012, there were 2,328 fatalities caused by distracted driving crashes.”

Drivers still can have a conversation while in their vehicle, as the law does make exceptions for hands-free or voice operated mode devices, including those with headsets.

Drivers also will be able to use

GPS or navigation devices.

Other exceptions to the new law include calling 911 to report an emergency situation or calling while parked on the shoulder of a roadway, according to attorneys at Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard of Waukegan.

“When a driver uses a cellphone, it decreases their concentration and response time,” said Patrick Salvi, managing partner at Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard. “Our law firm sees too many victims suffer from accidents that involve distracted driving. We hope the new laws will be a reminder for drivers to focus on the road and curb distractions.”

If caught using a cellphone without a hands-free device, motorists could face a $75 fine.

The penalties increase by $25 for subsequent offenses to a maximum of $150.

Another new law increases the penalties that can be imposed on drivers whose use of an electronic device while driving causes an accident.

Under House Bill 2585, if the accident causes great bodily harm to another person, the driver faces a Class A misdemeanor charge and can be sentenced to up to one year in prison.

If the accident causes death to another person, the driver faces a Class 4 felony charge and can be sentenced to one to three years in prison.

Current law only allows drivers to be charged with traffic violations.

Meyer said the previous law on hand-held devices was confusing, but it was also difficult to enforce.

“The new law is now very simple. Using a hand-held device while driving will get you a ticket,” Meyer said.

8IN BRIEF CLC passes new policy on concealed carry

CLC starts to offer photonics degree

GRAYSLAKE – The College of Lake County board passed a gun policy prohibiting anyone but sworn police officers from carrying a firearm on college-owned or -controlled property.

The action was taken at the board’s December meeting.

Under the policy, enacted to comply with Illinois’ Firearm Concealed Carry Act, anyone with a concealed carry license coming to the Grayslake or Southlake campus in Vernon Hills must store their weapon, unloaded, in a secure case or locked container out of plain view in their parked vehicle.

At the Lakeshore campus in Waukegan, where CLC does not own a parking facility, those with a concealed carry license must comply with the laws of the city, but at the Grayslake and Southlake campuses, they cannot carry a weapon on campus.

With the addition of a new associate in applied science degree in optics and photonics technology, students at the College of Lake County will have an opportunity to prepare for careers in this emerging high-technology field.

The new degree supplements a certificate program CLC launched in 2009. The CLC board approved adding the degree, effective Jan. 1, 2014.

CLC created the degree and bought equipment for the program through its participation in National Science Foundation grants totaling $1 million.

CLC is the only community college in the Chicago area to offer either a certificate or A.A.S. program in photonics and optics.

The degree will prepare graduates to work in optics, lasers and fiber optics positions.

Will it be Rodgers or Flynn behind center?

This week, we have two matchups to preview: The Bears versus the Packers with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, and the Bears versus the Pack with Matt Flynn behind the wheel.

My best guess is it will be Flynn irrespective of what’s at stake.

Reports from late last week are that Rodgers never was close to being medically cleared, so it’s hard to imagine he will make that much progress for the Bears game. The only thing that’s certain is we won’t know until late in the week, if before Sunday at all.

With Rodgers, you’re talking about the best quarterback in the game, and one of the best ever. The Packers are capable of beating you with the pass

or the run, and Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Jarrett Boykin and, perhaps, even Aaron Quarless all become weapons you have to scheme for.

If it’s Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will focus their attention on stopping Eddie Lacy, James Starks and Nelson, and then trust individual defenders to make plays against the rest while the defense tries to force Flynn to make a play to beat them.

Don’t think for a minute that Flynn can’t beat you. He’s very comfortable in Mike McCarthy’s offense and just fine reading defenses, going through his progressions and knowing when to quit on a play to fight another day.

But he has nowhere near the cannon Rodgers does nor can he command that kind of accuracy. Keep Flynn in third-and-long, and he’s unlikely to beat you.

The Packers are top five or top 10 in almost every offensive category, regardless of the quarterback, except avoiding interceptions and allowing

quarterback sacks. There, it makes a difference who’s under center.

Rodgers has thrown four interceptions and has been sacked 18 times in 251 attempts. Flynn, Scott Tolzein and Seneca Wallace have thrown 10 interceptions and have been sacked 24 times in 280 attempts. Flynn has seven of those picks and 17 sacks in 166 attempts.

Regardless of which quarterback it is, the story of this game for the Bears’ defense figures to be their 32nd-ranked run defense versus Lacy and Starks.

With Flynn at quarterback, the Bears will pack seven, eight or even nine in the box on most plays. Lacy is dynamic at getting to the second level, but not a huge threat to outrun anyone in the secondary or go all the way.

Defensively, the Packers have been a huge disappointment this year and are more likely to be the reason whether the Bears win the NFC North than Rodgers’ injury. After their best

outing of the year versus Atlanta in Lambeau three weeks ago, Dallas and Pittsburgh have scorched them the past two weeks. They had no answers for the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell last week, and Matt Forte should have a big day.

After a fast start to the season, B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett have been ineffective up front, and the loss of Johnny Jolly for the season with a neck injury has been huge as he was playing the best football of his career.

Clay Matthews and Nick Perry are back from injury at the outside linebacker spots, but neither is rushing the quarterback the way they are capable, and A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones inside are not as stout as they need to be against the run.

Tramon Williams and Sam Shields have been inconsistent, at best, on the corners, making the occasional big play but struggling in coverage often.

That matchup with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery is potentially another big edge for the Bears.

More likely, however, it’s wait until next year.

In either event, I hope you had fun playing fantasy football this year. I also hope that this column, perhaps, provided you some not-terrible advice, at least once in a while.

If nothing else, there were quite a few fantasy surprises in 2013. Ray Rice was a consensus first-rounder, as was CJ Spiller. No one expected Peyton Manning to be a bum, but I don’t recall much talk about him shattering the single-season touchdown passes record, either. It was a wild season.

This week, we recognize the best 2013 fantasy players with a Fantasy Dream Team and an All-First-Round Team (the top 12 fantasy players, regardless of position).

SPINAL DECOMPRESSION: EXPLAINED

Spinal decompression is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment for those suffering from chronic back pain.

Below are just some of the conditions that non-surgical spinal decompression is believed to help. Consult with your chiropractor to learn if it can help pain.

Herniated Discs This is the most common spinal condition treated with decompression treatment, When the spine compresses it can cause disc herniations to expand, putting pressure on surrounding spinal nerve roots. It is believed that decompression

treatment takes the pressure off these damaged discs so that the disc bulge will return closer to its original size.

Decompression is believed to help to create more space between the vertebrae reducing painful symptoms.

Degenerative Disc Disease

Spinal Stenosis

Loss of disc height can be exacerbated by spinal compression, causing the vertebral bodies to move closer together. This can cause nerve compression and other forms of common back pain. Decompression is believed to eliminate the overwhelming pressure on degenerated discs reducing or eliminating painful symptoms.

Spinal Stenosis is created by the narrowing of the spinal canal. This narrowing may be caused by mechanical problems or by abnormalities in the aging spine. It may or may not result in low back pain, limping, and a lack of feeling in the legs. Ultimately, stenosis is a chronic condition that cannot be “cured” but it is believed that decompression can improve the condition, and these improvements can be maintained over the long term.

Facet Joint Syndrome Conceptually, facet syndrome causes pain due to arthritic changes in the vertebral bones.

THE SCIENCE

Symptoms of a herniated disc can vary depending on the location of the herniation and the type of soft tissue involved. In many cases severe and unrelenting pain will radiate into the region served by an affected nerve root that is irritated or impinged by the herniated material.

THE TREATMENT Spinal Rejuvenation Therapy targets a specific disc or trouble area. It creates a vacuum effect inside the disc, allowing the center of the disc to be reabsorbed into its proper position. When the herniated material in the disc has receded, the nerves in the disc are able to heal, eliminating the patient’s pain.

It may sound painful, but it’s not. Patients are fitted with a support system, then positioned on a comfortable spinal decompression table. The support system stabilizes the patient’s body so the therapy can focus on the affected area of the spine.

Once on the table, an advanced computer system elongates the spine in a slow, gentle manner. This relieves pressure on compressed discs.

THE GOAL

Spinal decompression gently pulls the vertebral joints apart. It is believed this precise process produces a negative pressure inside the disc causing any herniated material to slowly recede away from the affected nerve root and back into the disc.

It is also believed through this process the disc is re-hydrated, aiding in its restoration.

The decompression doctor’s primary goal is to relieve the patient’s pain. It is extremely important to accurately diagnose the cause of the patient’s condition. The doctor will perform a physical evaluation, review all previously existing data such as MRI or X-Ray to be certain the patient is a candidate for the decompression procedure.
