Jandel Kelly said the turkey-in-residence at Patch 22 farm in Wadsworth was once a little girl’s pet. The girl made the farm a deal – they could have Royal the turkey as long as they promised never to eat him, Kelly said. Kelly said Royal has no fears of ending up on the family’s table. Five years old, he’s living the good life being adored by schoolchildren who visit the farm, she said. Kelly said, “Our last tom passed away last winter at 15 years old.” That’s a long life for a domesticated turkey, with an average lifespan of 10 years, she said. Kelly described Royal’s daily life to Gurnee Suburban Life reporter Jesse Carpender.

Thaler found out about the Viking Singers from a church friend while she was living in Waukegan. “I was in choir in school and in lots of church choirs,” she said. “This gives me a chance to do secular music.” In the holiday concert, Thaler said she’ll perform a solo, “Where Are You, Christmas?” by Faith Hill on “The Grinch” soundtrack. Thaler said she can’t read music, so being in the choir has been a learning experience. Byrd has a lot of patience for those who can’t read music, Thaler said. Tom Meskel, bass singer and Grayslake resident, was proudly wearing his Viking Park Singers name badge at rehearsal. “I’ve been in it seven or eight years,” he whispered as Byrd worked on a measure with the sopranos. “We all like each other and [Byrd] picks good music. Sometimes I think I’m too tired to come

to rehearsal, but I leave here invigorated.” Byrd said she’s been director of the Viking Park Singers for the past 20 years, having started in September of 1994 upon the retirement of the original director, Jim Curry, who directed the group for its first five years. The chorus was founded in 1989. The main events of the year are the summer concert and winter concert, Perez said. “Our summer shows are themed – this year we sang songs from musicals,” Perez said. Byrd said what makes her involvement meaningful is “being able to lend my efforts in assisting a wonderful group of singers who enjoy expressing themselves through music, and giving them the encouragement to let their hearts sing.” Tickets, $7 for adults and $4 for students, can be purchased at 4374 Old Grand Ave. or 920 N. Choir members ruffled through sheets of holiday music and murmured comments to their friends before director Rita Byrd raised her arms to lead them in the first song of rehearsal, a prayer for peace on earth called “Et In Terra Pax.” It was one of the group’s final rehearsals until the Viking Park Singers don holiday ties or vests and perform a holiday concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at Viking Park Dance Hall, 4374 Old Grand Ave. The singers began rehearsing the holiday music in September, Byrd said. “Watch your dynamics,” Byrd reminded the singers as they smoothly crescendoed in full, mature voices. When they finished the song, she said: “Thank you so much for that peaceful beginning of rehearsal. It can only get better from here. Let’s do ‘Christmas Bells’ next.” Sopranos and second sopranos bobbed their heads like bells as they sang, “Ding, dong, ding, dong ...” The choir is accompanied by Carol Hemmer on piano. Byrd said, “We call her ‘hands.’ Someone took a photo of her hands at a concert and framed it and gave it to her. We couldn’t do it without her.” The program contains holiday songs that are a little off the beaten path, music librarian Debbie Perez said, songs such as “Jingle Bell Fantasy” and “All On A Starry Night.” Perez, a 10-year member, said the singers meet Tuesdays at Viking Park Dance Hall, September through June. It’s a Gurnee Park District program, and the singers pay to take part, she said. The men and women in the choir come from all over Lake County and even Wisconsin. Cindy Thaler, a resident of Bristol, Wis., is an alto in the choir. “Our holiday concert usually fills the place. I think it’s the nostalgia from their childhood that makes people want to hear [choral music during the holidays.] The audience joins in on some of our songs, like ‘Joy to the World,’” Thaler said.

On Black Friday, Gurnee police will have “all hands on deck,” said Tom Agos, crime prevention specialist at the Gurnee Police Department. There will be officers around Gurnee Mills and major department stores in town, he said, adding that each store is responsible for keeping security in place. “We contribute a significant amount of resources to make sure it’s a safe, enjoyable shopping day for all,” he said. Agos said the most common crime during the holiday season is auto burglary. “It’s not uncommon for [thieves] to burglarize because they saw someone loading up their car after shopping,” Agos said. “Make sure no one’s following you to your parking spot and be aware of your surroundings.” Ten to 15 years ago at Gurnee Mills, a woman was loaded with packages while exiting the mall, Agos said. “Her purse was dangling by her little finger and it was snatched. Someone took off with the purse. She didn’t do anything wrong – she should have a right to walk in a parking lot unharassed, but it could have been prevented,” Agos said. Agos recommended making trips home between large purchases rather than storing it all in the car. “It’s always better to make multiple trips home,” he said. “But at the very least, move to another parking spot if you’re going to go back inside. The likelihood of someone following you to another parking area is low.” While shopping, observe “purse etiquette,” Agos said. “If you don’t have to bring a purse, don’t have one,” he said. “We don’t see a lot of purse snatching, but people lose track of the purse and then it disappears with valuable stuff inside. Gurnee men raise cancer awareness with ’staches By JESSE CARPENDER jcarpender@shawmedia.com Scott Rans, fire medic at Gurnee Fire Department, said that in the 1980s, a mustache was part of a stereotypical firefighter’s look. “They all had mustaches back then, the firemen and police,” Rans said. “But it’s becoming rare to have facial hair in general.” But it isn’t rare this month – there’s many mustaches around Gurnee Fire Department as 13 firefighters partic-

ipate in Movember, a national effort to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. The mustached mayhem will culminate Nov. 30, when Gurnee firefighters will participate in the Ditka Dash 5K at Soldier Field, named for Mike Ditka, the former Bears coach who also sports a mustache. “They encourage people to have mustaches for Movember,” Rans said.

He’s on a team of eight Lake County participants who call themselves “Selleck Wannabes,” he said. “A lot of men don’t know how high the risk of prostate cancer is,” Collin said. “One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. A man has a higher chance of prostate cancer than a woman does of breast cancer.” Participating in Movember is a fun way to raise awareness, Collin said. “It’s a conversation starter, and I can remind [people] they should get tested,” Collin said. Rans said, “It just seemed like something fun to do. It really took off. Life Schools use games to make math fun School

Clover, 8, is a math whiz, Mike Beatty said. She’s in an advanced math class, already learning multiplication, division and place value, mom April Beatty said. They attended Family Math Night to encourage her interest and have fun, she said. More than 175 families of first-, second- and third-grade students participated in a variety of math games that covered skills ranging from addition, subtraction, multiplication, problem solving, geometry and logic. Many of the games were played with a deck of cards or a set of dice. Laura Tieman, third-grade math specialist, organized Family Math Night along with the school’s other math specialists, Anne Tussing and Meagan Dillon, to give parents the tools they need to reinforce lessons at home. “Years ago, the school had family math nights, and we’ve brought it back,” Tieman said. “We hope it will become an annual event. Parents are asking for ways to help at home, and math games are a fun way to practice.” Parents could take home copies of the games they played that night, she said. April Beatty said that if Clover has trouble understanding a concept while she’s doing her homework, she and

Mike Beatty said he and his wife encourage Clover when tackling math problems. “Math is important in our whole culture, and there’s a stereotype that girls aren’t good at math,” Mike Beatty said. “I don’t believe that [stereotype] and want to encourage her in the future.”

Jill Farrell, math department chair at Antioch Community High School, said math fairs are “a good way for kids to see that math isn’t always dry and it’s good for parents to see what their kids are learning.” Games at the math fair included Bozo Buckets where students had to answer a math question per bucket toss and basketball games, Farrell said. “It’s like incorporating math into Chuck E. Cheese,” she said. “It’s a different way of thinking about math.”

Donations of pies and other desserts arrive during the day on Wednesday, ensuring that the sailors will enjoy a nice finishing touch to their dinner. Volunteers help set up tables and chairs and decorate the Family Life Center. Letters from children at River Trail School have been collected and will be distributed to each seaman recruit. Candy (some of it leftover from Halloween and donated to GCC) is put out in bowls all over the church as a treat for the sailors, who begin to be known as “our recruits.” Warren High and District 56 donate school buses to transport the recruits to GCC, and volunteers eagerly await their arrival. Once at GCC, the sailors enjoy watching the football games, playing video games and, most of all, the chance to call or Skype home, courtesy of Verizon. Photos of the festivities are taken and posted on the bulletin board outside the Family Life Center. Each recruit gets a manila envelope in which to place his/her photos and letters so that they can be sent home. Dinner is served family style, and the recruits are told that the community members are their “family for the day.” Everyone makes sure that each sailor feels loved, appreciated and part of a “home away from home.” If you would like to attend, please know that you are most welcome. Dinner is at noon; come a little early so you can be seated before the recruits march in. There is no charge. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Many people enjoy doing things that are “traditional,” especially during holidays. This year marks the 19th annual Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot, a 5K run/walk sponsored by the Gurnee police and fire departments and the Gurnee Community Church. Jon was a student at O’Plaine School when he passed away in 1992 after a courageous battle with neuroblastoma cancer. When I was subbing in District 56 schools, I remember Jon as a charming, sunny child with a big smile on his face. His courage was admired by all. The race begins at 8 a.m. Participants leave from Gurnee Community Church, and they end up at the church after the race to enjoy some refreshments. Proceeds from the race will be split between the Jon Callaghan Memorial Fund, to help find a cure for childhood cancer, and Teen Mother Choices, a mission of GCC that strives to help teenage mothers become good parents, continue their education and find meaningful careers. Gurnee’s other Thanksgiving tradition began many years ago as a way to host a few sailors from Great Lakes. Started by the Man-toManmen’s Bible study and fellowship group, the event grew until it began to host an entire division of recruits from Naval Training Center Great Lakes. This group of about 200 sailors is slated to graduate from boot camp the week after Thanksgiving. Several years ago, it was decided to open up the dinner to the entire community, and the GCC Community Thanksgiving Dinner was “born.” In addition to the sailors, the dinner is open to anyone wishing to attend. Church members, friends, neighbors, whole families and even strangers volunteer to help with the festivities. Because as many as 500 meals may be served, volunteers begin deep-frying turkeys in the wee hours of the morning, usually around 2

For the most part, things have not gone well for the Minnesota Vikings since the Bears last saw them in Soldier Field the second week of the season. But after all kinds of turmoil at the quarterback position because of injury and the surprising signing of Josh Freeman, who then failed miserably in his one start before suffering a concussion, the Vikings look an awful lot like the club the Bears barely got by in Week 2 with their 31-30 victory on a last-minute touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to Martellus Bennett. Christian Ponder appears to be firmly re-entrenched as the starting quarterback, and Adrian Peterson will be coming off one of his best games of the season in Green Bay, where the Vikings played the Packers

to a tie in overtime. Most of the biggest questions in this matchup will be about the Bears’ mindset after the egg they laid in St. Louis on Sunday, and whether they have any hope at all of slowing Peterson with the worst run defense in the NFL. Peterson rushed for 146 yards on 32 carries and a touchdown in five quarters of football, and while he hasn’t approached his 2012 heroics, he was still the NFL’s second-leading rusher before the Redskins-49ers game Monday night with 997 total yards, a 4.4 average and 10 touchdowns. Ponder has been a threat on the ground with 34 scrambles for 151 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s completing 64.5 percent of his passes for a 78.7 passer rating, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. While his passing numbers on the season don’t scare you, he did complete 21 of 30 throws for 233 yards and a 103.9 passer rating Sunday at Lambeau. Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson have been up and down, but are

reliable targets for Ponder when the Vikings are playing well. Cordarrelle Patterson is a factor in the kick return game, but is still struggling to find himself as a receiver. On defense, the Vikings have struggled all year. They are 30th in total defense, 14th versus the run but 29th against the pass. They are 23rd in interception percentage and 26th rushing the quarterback. On the defensive line, Jared Allen and Kevin Williams are former all pros who are both still capable of having big games, but don’t do it on a regular basis any more. LeTroy Guion and Brian Robison still are starting as well, and this is the unit that helped key the Vikings playoff run in 2012, but they have all struggled this year. Chad Greenway is still the guy you have to identify on Minnesota’s defense, and he’ll make plays all over the field, but Erin Henderson in the middle and Marvin Mitchell on the weak side are guys the Bears should be able to exploit. Josh Robinson and Chris Cook are

third- and second-round draft picks, respectively, on the corners who are both athletic and fast enough but terribly inconsistent, which is why this team is 29th in pass defense. The safeties, Jamarca Sanford and Andrew Sendejo, aren’t bad forcing the run, but do struggle in coverage. At the end of the day for the Bears, this one comes down to what are they going to do about Peterson? After going off for a 140 on the ground week nine against the Cowboys, Peterson had been held in check by the Redskins and Seahawks before exploding again in Green Bay. The unfortunate fact is if the Vikings climb on Peterson’s back, there is little the Bears will be able to do but get into a shootout. The good news is that Josh McCown continues to flourish in Marc Trestman’s offense, and the Bears have a lot more weapons on offense than Minnesota, giving them an excellent chance to prevail by piling up points, which is exactly what happened the last time they got together.

Nothing beats spending time with loved ones, enjoying a fine feast … and getting a jump on your fantasy opponent! I’m not suggesting that Aunt Mildred’s discussions aren’t riveting, but it’s always fun to have players going on Thanksgiving. A closer look at Thursday’s games will help you determine which players can help your team and those who are likely to be … turkeys (ouch).

THANKSGIVING DAY PREVIEW This game not only features several intriguing fantasy matchups, it also is pivotal to the NFC North. The big

Stafford should be productive against the Packers’ 18thranked defense. The Packers equally are mediocre versus the run and the pass, so start Reggie Bush.

Raiders at Cowboys, 3:30 p.m. The late-afternoon game should be a bonanza for Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. The Raiders’ defense ranks No. 8 against the run, but a dismal No. 25 versus the pass. It would be a surprise if Romo didn’t crest 300 yards and throw at least two touchdown passes, probably more. Jason Witten also is a must start. Terrance Williams has disappeared, and

all other Cowboys’ receivers would seem to be afterthoughts at this point. Although the Raiders are respectable against the run – sticking with the idea that this will be a shootout – start DeMarco Murray and Dan Bailey. The Cowboys actually have the weaker defense in this contest, ranking last in points and passing yards. Assuming Darren McFadden will be in street clothes, Rashard Jennings is a great play. If Denarius Moore returns, he is a solid play. If not, take a close look at Rod Streater.

Steelers at Ravens, 7:30 p.m. Two good, but not great, defenses face off in the night game. Ben Roethlisberger has averaged 22 fantasy points over the past four weeks. He has been up and down, however. He might be looking at something around 15 points this week. The Steelers still drive fantasy owners crazy

with their running-back rotation, but Le’Veon Bell is clearly the best option. This week, he’s probably looking at 10 to 14 points. Antonio Brown is a top-five fantasy receiver and an obvious play. After Brown, it gets dicey. Jerricho Cotchery had emerged during weeks 9-11, but he went without a reception against the Browns. After lighting up the Bears in week 11, Ray Rice reverted to his 2013 form against the Jets (16 carries for 30 yards). Although the Jets are stout against the run, it’s time to look at Rice as a No. 3 fantasy back or flex option. In smaller leagues, he’s probably not worth a roster spot. After kicker Justin Tucker and receiver Torrey Smith, the Ravens do not offer much in this game. Given his recent production, it’s hard to recommend Joe Flacco. Call it a gut instinct: He scores 20-plus points against Pittsburgh.

question, of course, is whether Aaron Rodgers will play. As of Monday morning, his status was uncertain. Matt Flynn came to the rescue last week against Minnesota, taking over for a struggling Scott Tolzien. Obviously, the Packers are a stronger play if it’s Rodgers, but either quarterback should produce. Flynn seemed to have a connection with Jarrett Boykin, who hauled in five receptions and a touchdown in the second half. The Lions’ defense is ranked No. 28 against the pass. Boykin, James Jones and Jordy Nelson are solid starts. Kicker Mason Crosby also is in for a good day. It might be tougher for Eddie Lacy – Detroit is No. 4 against the run – but we still like the talented rookie this week. The Lions are among the league’s dumbest teams. Transfer student made impact on Warren Township hoops By BILL PEMSTEIN editorial@lakecountysuburbanlife.com The Warren Township High School boys basketball team was loaded with talent as the winter of 2002 approached. And then the word got out. The Blue Devils were getting a transfer from Champaign. That transfer, Jordan Dalton, had no idea what Warren basketball was all about. “When I was in eighth grade, my paternal grandmother was diagnosed with cancer,’’ Dalton said. “My father wanted to be closer to her in her final days. He worked on the naval base and the closest place to transfer his job was to the Great Lakes Naval Base. “At the end of my eighth grade year, he asked if I would like to come live with him. It was a great opportunity for us to grow our relationship as father and son. I honestly did not know anything about WTHS or the talented class I was coming into.” Dalton, the former Warren star

point guard, lives in Sioux City, S.D. He looks back fondly at his playing days at Warren High School. “I am glad I got a chance to play freshman ball to start the season,’’ Dalton said. “I felt like I got a chance to really create a great friendship with the guys in my class. I loved how competitive those guys were. We went out every day whether it was practice or in a game with a dominatJordan ing mentality. We were Dalton all fierce competitors, which made that team a great group of guys to compete with every day. However, in the back of my mind I wanted to play varsity.” It didn’t take long for Dalton to earn his spot on the varsity team. Former Warren head coach Chuck Ramsey could see right away this transfer was going to help his program. “He was a tiny, little guy who took care of business,’’ Ramsey said. “He

was an excellent student. He was always on top of things. He found out about weightlifting.” Ramsey brought Dalton to the varsity halfway through his freshman season. “We felt he could really help us out on the varsity level,’’ Ramsey said. “And he was a varsity player from that point on.” Dalton was excited to get the call up but naturally a bit nervous as well. “When I got the call up to play on the varsity team, it was the most excited I had been that far in my life,’’ Dalton said. “It felt like the hard work had paid off. All the guys on the varsity were so nice to me, though. They would constantly coach me up and encourage, and most importantly include. Those guys were a true team. They did not care who got the headlines or glory. They showed up every day and busted their butts in practice. It spoke so highly of the program that coach Ramsey had built.” Dalton’s senior season was one of

the best in Warren history. “That 27-3 team was the best team I ever had during the regular season,’’ Ramsey said. “We were unbeaten in conference. We had a lot of one-sided wins.” And then that powerful club from Glenbrook North stopped the Devils just short of a trip to state. “It was tough when that buzzer went off against Glenbrook North,’’ Dalton said. “The tough part was not necessarily knowing that I would not play with those guys again, it was knowing that we were all going our separate ways. ... Leaving that bond was the hardest part.” Dalton took his hoops skills to Augustana College in South Dakota. After his career concluded there, he stayed in basketball as a ticket sales consultant of Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA. Then South Dakota came calling again. He will be married next August and plans to stay in the South Dakota area as a financial consultant.
