Fleeing the suburbs?

While living in Chicago as a college student I had no idea what my future had in store.

But, I did know that I enjoyed the museums, restaurants and other cultural amenities the city had to offer – amenities I believed to be much different than what was available to me back home in the suburbs.

However, as a native and current resident of Lake County, I can say that I’ve discovered that this county has much to offer. But is it enough to attract young professionals, who might otherwise pack up and head to the city?

On page 4 learn about Leadership Lake County. The program is a new initiative aimed at keeping young professionals living, working – and of course enjoying – Lake County.

COMMUNITY CORNER: GURNEE COMMUNITY CHURCH Shawn Robards, director of church administration at Gurnee Community Church, said the most meaningful part of the church’s annual Thanksgiving Dinner is hearing from families of naval station recruits who are thankful their loved ones had a Thanksgiving dinner away from home.

Robards said the church committee starts planning their annual Nov. 28 dinner months in advance, coordinating 190 volunteers to feed 400 people, including recruits from Naval Station Great Lakes.

The dinner takes place in the afternoon after the Village of Gurnee’s Turkey Trot 5k run and walk at 8 a.m., which ends with breakfast at Gurnee Community Church, so it becomes a day of feasting with the community, Robards said.

Robards shared the details with Gurnee Suburban Life reporter Jesse Carpender.

Who provides the food?

Local people and businesses donate and we provide the rest. This year, we still need desserts – people can call the church at 847-336-2392 to arrange a drop-off donation.

What does this Thanksgiving dinner mean to the naval recruits?

It’s the first time many of these young people are away from their families for the holiday. It’s a wonderful outreach to help those serving for us and give back to the community. We serve them family-style at the tables and it’s great to hear them talk about what Thanksgivings are like back home. We provide phones and computers so that they can call or Skype their families.

How do you plan for it?

We start planning with a kick-off meeting in September and our committee meets Sundays.

It takes place over three days, with set-up [Nov. 27], dinner [Nov.28] and clean-up [Nov. 29]. We start deep-frying turkeys at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving.

Initiative works to keep young pros in Lake County

It’s a common anecdote that’s becoming a real problem for businesses in Lake County looking to recruit young talent, said Aaron Lawlor, Lake County Board chairman.

To keep young professionals in the county, the Lake County Board has partnered with Lake County Partners to start a new initiative, Leadership Lake County.

Businesses in Lake County are looking for young professionals who can grow with the company, said Michael Stevens, president and CEO of Lake County Partners. But they are having a difficult time finding them because Lake County’s highly educated young professionals are heading to the city to live and work, he said.

“Lake County’s strength is that 40 percent of our population has a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to the national average of 13 percent,” he said. “[The county] has six of the top 15 high schools in the state.”

Jennifer Marini, member of Lake County Young Professionals, said she lived in Chicago while attending graduate school and recently moved back to Lake County.

“The city has a bit more to offer for young professionals in a cultural aspect,” she said.

“There are a lot more bars, restaurants and events going on. It was convenient to take advantage of that after work while I was living in Lincoln Park.”

Stevens said Marini’s attraction to the city rings true for many young adults.

“We’re seeing an exodus to the city for ages 22 to 29. As we’re talking to businesses, they’re expressing that concern. We need to change the demographic of Lake County so we can continue to succeed,” Stevens said. Once pro-

Marini, 36, said she moved back to her home county a year ago when she decided to pursue a career in education.

Now, she works in Libertyville at Empire Beauty as a career planning specialist. She said family and a more relaxed lifestyle are what brought her back to Lake County.

“It’s a work-life balance [the county offers],” Marini said.

“Living close to work matters. There was a time I was commuting four hours a day from Lincoln Park to Libertyville.”

Lawlor said Lake County’s overall population has “a tremendous amount of baby boomers” and it’s important for companies to groom young professionals to grow into more powerful positions, he said.

Lake County is competing with two magnet locations, Chicago and Wisconsin, whose businesses are actively recruiting young talent by focusing on tech centers and

innovative industries, Lawlor said.

Some businesses are responding to the problem by setting up satellite offices in downtown Chicago, Stevens said.

Lawlor is spearheading the Leadership Lake County initiative with Nick Sauer, board member for District 17, which includes Island Lake and Barrington.

Lawlor said with no hard data yet, it’s tough to say why young professionals are leaving Lake County, but his guess is that lack of access to public transit, traffic congestion and long commutes are factors.

“Young people don’t just want a job – although it seems like many would take anything given the current economic climate – they want to see their place within an organization and have the opportunity to grow,” Lawlor said.

Stevens said Lake County Partners will create a task force to assess and recommend how Lake County can be more attractive to young

professionals.

Lawlor said the initiative will also focus on Lake County’s five driving industries: health care, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, professional services and arts and culture.

An early step in the initiative will be to collect data by surveying young professionals on why they are leaving the area, Lawlor said.

Marini said while she understands why young professionals are attracted to the city lifestyle, she sees the benefits when young professional return to the suburbs.

“Eventually they come back, bringing life and work experience to our chambers and villages,” Marini said.

“There are lots of opportunities for young professionals in Lake County. We have so many up-and-coming places like Libertyville, Lincolnshire and Lake Zurich. I live in Volo, and I see a lot of growth potential in Volo and Wauconda.”

Velander, co-chair of Lake County Young Professionals,

said the networking group will collaborate on the Leadership Lake County initiative, but the details haven’t been ironed out yet.

“People are excited to work with young professionals because of their energy, enthusiasm and fresh ideas,” Velander said.

Velander said providing more suburban “downtown strips” – like Libertyville and Arlington Heights – would appeal to young professionals who want to shop and eat in walking distance.

J.J. Stanczak, 35, agrees that Lake County needs more developed downtown areas.

He co-owns B2B Energy in Libertyville, which helps businesses save money on electricity.

The Gurnee resident said improving negative perceptions of downtown Waukegan would attract more young professionals.

“Waukegan is our largest community, and it isn’t what it once was,” Stanczak said.

“If we could bring back businesses downtown and redevelop the lakefront” more young people would be attracted to the area which offers a more urban experience, he said.

“The development of the lakefront [in Waukegan] is the key to it all. It’s a great piece of property. But investors are afraid to put money into it.

Every time plans [to redevelop] fall through, it reiterates negative feelings about that area,” he said.

Lawlor said Lake County Partners has heard from investors who are interested in Lake County because of the initiative.

editorial@gurneesuburbanlife.com The Gurnee Police Department continues to search for information regarding a Nov. 14 robbery at Community Trust Credit Union, 1313 N. Route 41, and is asking for the public’s help.

According to a release, the police department received a report of an armed robbery in progress at the bank at 1:44 p.m. Nov. 14. The first officers to arrive learned that the suspect had fled the area on foot

with an undetermined amount of cash.

A perimeter was set up and a

search of the area was conducted with the help of Gurnee’s K-9 and the Law Enforcement Aviation Coalition’s Air-One helicopter. Viking Junior High, Warren Township High School’s O’Plaine Campus and River Trail School were placed on soft lockdown while the search was conducted, according to the release.

The suspect was not located and no injuries were reported.

The suspect was described as a male black of medium build, with a height of 5-foot-10-inches, wearing dark jeans, white shoes with black trim and a red hooded sweatshirt with a white ski mask pulled down over his face. The sweatshirt had white writing on the shoulder and front and an emblem on top of the hood, according to the release. The suspect implied he had a weapon, but did not display one, according to the release.

Gurnee Police seek information in fatal hit and run found the victim unresponsive lying next to an injured dog, according to the release. Gurnee Firemedics tended to the victim but found no signs of life, according to the release.

“We’re looking for the public’s help,” Meyer said. “We recovered little evidence at the scene, so we’re hoping someone

saw something.”

Meyer said police believe Fleming may have been trying to catch his dog in the roadway.

“Under normal circumstances, people are not allowed to walk on the roadway [on highway exits],” he said.

It is believed the victim was struck by a vehicle sometime

between 3:30 to 3:44 a.m. and no vehicles were found at or near the scene, Meyer said. Fleming was dressed in a Chicago Cubs jacket and yellow pajama pants, according to the release.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver who struck and killed a Gurnee man over the weekend.

Cmdr. William Meyer identified the victim as 31-year-old

MARY BENNETT CO-OWNER OF SAVANNA HOUSE RESTAURANT Patrons at Savanna House, Mary Bennett’s homestyle restaurant in Wadsworth, can see goldfinches eating at feeders just outside the windows of the veranda room, with the Lake County prairie as the backdrop while they dine on home-made corn muffins and brisket.

As Savanna House celebrates its fifth anniversary, Oct. 15, Bennett recalled her 31 years as a medical technologist at Abbott laboratories before she became a restaurateur, a family passion. Bennett’s extended family, the Khayats, own 15 restaurants in Lake County, including Fatman Pizza Pub, In-Laws, Lake House and Austin’s Saloon.

Bennett’s restaurant, 38905 Route 41, is inspired by the prairie surrounding it. The walls are decorated with horseshoes from Temple Farms and paintings of prairie wildlife and the Wadsworth Hunt Club by a local artists. A customer gave her a woodwork model of Savanna House filled with homey knick-knacks. In a corner hangs an uninhabited wasp nest someone brought in. She wants every part of the restaurant to reflect Wadsworth’s village motto: “The Village of Country Living.”

Why is Savanna House going gluten-free?

This week we’re launching our gluten-free menu. I’ve been listening to customers – so many people have celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease or other health problems where they can’t have gluten. Thirty percent of the population requires gluten-free diets. I’ve read that it’s also bad for children with autism or attention deficit disorder. Some kids come in here

with their families and after they go through the menu for something they can eat, all they can have is a bowl of fruit.

Gluten is empty, it adds nothing nutritionally. So our new menu offers everything in a gluten-free option.

We added a new kitchen so there isn’t any gluten contamination. I personally want to be healthier and eat healthier and now I realize how empty gluten diets are. There really is no benefit to them.

Where does your food come from?

We use only Wadsworth local-grown vegetables, no frozen vegetables. I have beehives at home and make my own honey which is used in our honey cinnamon butter spread served on corn muffins. It’s truly homestyle cooking, it’s all made fresh right here. Our chicken wings were just voted No. 1 against 18 local restaurants.

The homestyle cooking aspect comes from my late husband, who loved southern cooking. In the south, corn bread is heavy with lard and the greens are cooked in fat, so we definitely added a Midwest twist to make things healthier.

And the corn muffins are sweet because we like them sweet up north. It’s delicious, tasty and healthy.

Why is the prairie theme important to you?

This town is equestrian. At one time there were more horses than people. We have a brand new equestrian park opening behind us in a couple weeks.

The trails behind us go from Chicago to Milwaukee and people can access us by horseback or snowmobile. I just love that – we had customers come up on horseback riding gorgeous pintos two weeks ago.

We’re engulfed by nature – out our windows we’ve seen finches, blackbirds, cardinals, even two eagles. I love nature.

I’m not an official birder but my customers have taught me

a lot. All our bird seed comes from Wadsworth Feed Store.

What is your vision for Savanna House’s future?

I own the restaurant with my son Michael. He was in an accident and is now quadriplegic, but he is a brave, strong kid and still comes to work. Our new kitchen is wheelchair accessible so he can cook. My vision was that after our first five years he’d take over, but now it will take a couple more years.

How is Thanksgiving at Savanna House?

We sell out every year and get at least 300 people between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. We serve turkey, corn bread, dressing, yams with local honey, baby red mashed potatoes, beef brisket and peach glazed ham.

We make homemade pies and peach cobbler. You need reservations and we’re taking them already.

What were your childhood Thanksgivings like?

My mom was an immigrant from Poland and my dad came from Greece. We grew up in Zion on home-cooked meals.

Being first-generation Europeans, Thanksgiving always meant we were thankful to be in the U.S. with our family history of going through two World Wars. We’d have turkey with rice dressing, and dished from our old European background like lamb from our

Greek heritage.

What has your family taught you?

I have six siblings and we own restaurants all over Lake County. We’re a really big, really close family. My mom is 86 and my dad is 91, and they still come into the restaurant every day. We were taught that you can do anything in America, and you really can. I went from graduating the College of Lake County to climbing the corporate ladder to owning a restaurant. My mom went from not speaking English to being a leading Realtor in Lake County in one generation. With respect, religion and hard work, anything is possible.

How has your move from the corporate world to being a restaurateur changed you?

When I was in the corporate world, I really traveled the world and didn’t know the community I lived in. For 28 years I’ve lived in Wadsworth, but in the last five years I’ve really met the community. I’ve made so many friends. I know the surrounding area and Lake County much better, too. What I love about Wadsworth is that you’re 40 miles between Chicago and Milwaukee but it feels like you’re living somewhere quaint, in the country.

Warren special education program seeks business partners

By JESSE CARPENDER jcarpender@shawmedia.com Brandon Glende, senior at Warren Township High School, spent a recent Friday morning at McClure’s Garage with Jack Fallos, McClure’s manager, learning to build small engines on snowblowers. Glende was given the opportunity to have hands-on job shadowing in a field that interests him through Transition Services at Warren Township High School.

Transition Services gives special needs students the opportunity to gain work experience and a better understanding of their work goals before they graduate. The program serves 516 Warren Township High School students with a range of mental, physical and learning disabilities. The program works with students from when they enter high school until they turn 22.

Glende was the first Warren student to job shadow at McClure’s Garage, which is Transition Service’s first partner in the job shadowing program for a specialized field. Students with disabilities also have been able to job shadow at TJ MAXX at Gurnee Mills to learn retail skills, but there weren’t opportunities in specialized fields, said Emily Bear, job coach for Transition Services.

Bear said one of the most important things students learn from job shadowing is how to ask for help.

“They have no problem asking for help from teachers or job coaches, but when they get out there with someone they don’t know, they don’t know how to ask for help,” Bear said. “Self-advocacy is the biggest skill we teach.”

Bernadette Komenda, transition specialist, said “[The students’] self-confidence grows 300 percent” after getting real-life work experience.

“They get to have a place in the community. They’re so excited about it and can’t wait to go back the next day. They spend their whole life in school, receiving service, and this gives them the opportunity to give back. Now they’re productive citizens and that’s everything to them,” Komenda said.

Jack Fallos, manager at McClure’s Garage in Gurnee, said he is comfortable teaching students his trade from his experience training summertime employees.

Glende listened as Fallos explained the different parts of the snowblower and what tools they’d need to put it together.

Glende said, “I like working with my hands. This is really different from a normal school day. I like fixing and

Joyce Fallos, owner of McClure’s Garage and Jack’s mom, said they decided to allow students to job shadow at the garage because they enjoy “grooming kids to learn anything, from running the shop to fixing small engines, taking telephone calls.

“The diversity helps kids because it can help them in different jobs,” Joyce said. “We like helping kids, especially these kids because they don’t always get the same chances other kids do.”

Glende said he has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and takes many general education classes alongside classes like Career Planning, where he tried a Project Discovery kit on small engine repair. That repair project inspired his desire to job shadow at McClure’s, he said.

Komenda said 14 different Warren classrooms use Project Discovery kits,

which allow students to become familiar with more than 30 career tracks.

For example, there are kits on retail, food service, cosmetology, engine repair and construction. The kits range from 10 to 90 days to complete, and special education students try 15-20 kits on average, Komenda said.

If students find a kit that interests them, Transition Services tries to match them up with a job shadowing experience at a local business so they can see what the job is like in the real world, Komenda said.

“If they enjoy the job shadowing

[students visit the business four times on average], we move on to job training [for up to 90 hours]. If they don’t enjoy it – for example, they shadow in a kitchen and can’t stand the smell – then they shadow a different job experience,” she said.

Komenda said the program needs more businesses in specialized fields to participate. Transition Services has been working with the Gurnee Chamber of Commerce and Gurnee Village Board to find more participants.

Peg Merar, director of special education services at WTHS, said 50 to 60 percent of students with disabilities reported finding employment after high school in 2012.

“We want that percentage to be higher, so we want more local businesses to get involved,” Merar said.

“Our students are very good workers – they’re dedicated, focused and committed to the job.”

Transition Services needs job shadowing opportunities in the fields of automotive, carpentry, construction, dentistry and animal care, Merar said.

Participation costs nothing to businesses and students take a bus from WTHS to the job sites.

Merar said many parents of students with disabilities worry, “’What is my child going to do when they’re an adult?’”

“They have obstacles to traditional routes,” Merar said. “We help families through this process by helping them prepare for their future.”

Komenda said parents are involved in the process.

“It’s an opportunity for students to learn their strengths instead of viewing their disability as negative,” Komenda said. “We work with them on resumes, job interviews – everything the general education students are getting.”

At Warren’s business center, students can gain work experience by answering phones, delivering xerox paper and toners and socializing with staff.

Merar said, “We work on the soft skills you need no matter what job you have – problem solving, following directions, finishing tasks in a timely manner.”

Komenda said she meets with each of the 516 students one-on-one to ask them about their career goals and assess their strengths.

Bear said, “We are looking to create adults that will be productive members of society.”

Local students collect, donate winter clothes jcarpender@shawmedia.com When Student Council students of St. Patrick School in Wadsworth look into the eyes of families as they hand them coats, scarves and other winter necessities, they see who they’re helping and what it means, said Cynthia Jennings, math teacher.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 23 at Holy Family Food Pantry in Waukegan, 20 fourthto eighth-grade Student Council members will distribute more than 200 coats and other warm accessories like hats, scarves and gloves that they’ve gathered for their third annual coat drive.

On Nov. 13, coats flew around Jennings’ classroom as about 12 students quickly organized them into plastic bags by size.

Emily Hehn, seventh-grader, said “Aww” as she discovered a child-size colorful fleece coat with a matching hat that had been donated.

All St. Patrick School students are collecting gently used winter coats, gloves, scarves, and hats in infant to adult sizes. Donations can be dropped off at the school, 15020 W. Wadsworth Road through Nov. 22.

Jennings said the coat drive needs children’s snow pants and adult coats sized XL. They also need winter gear and blankets for babies.

“Last year a pregnant woman came out of the shelter nearby and asked us for a blanket

because she needed it for when the baby was born,” Jennings said.

She said the coat drive distribution is “a touching event” as the students help dress families for the cold.

“Parents come along and usually by the end of it, they’ve given their own coats away to someone who needed their size. We run out of everything completely,” she said.

The coat drive was started three years ago by students Stephanie Slowik and Katie Collin, the Student Council’s co-presidents and now eighth-graders.

Slowik said, “We wanted to start a service project where we weren’t just collecting but could meet the people we’re helping.

“Last year we were giving hats and gloves to little boys and the older brother was just so happy to put a hat on his little brother,” she said.

Collin said she cried in the car on the way home from the first year’s coat drive.

“We were cold just standing there wearing three layers and many people were just on the streets in pajamas looking for a warm place to give them food. It’s so emotional to hear their stories and you know God has a plan for them, but it’s hard to understand what their triumph will be,” Collin said.

Slowik said it’s been fun to be a part of the coat drive into its third year and see how it affects younger students.

Gurnee man named to national cricket team

Fahad Babar, of Gurnee, was recently named to the United States cricket world cup team and is representing his country during qualifiers from Nov. 15 to Nov. 30 in the United Arab Emirates.

During the week of Oct. 27, Babar, 21, was called upon to replace Steve Messiah, a batsman and team captain who unexpectedly withdrew from qualifying action.

After formal approval from the International Cricket Council, Babar and his 14 teammates jetted to Abu Dhabi, where they are competing for one of six spots in seeds in next year’s World Cup. For Babar, the selection is a dream come true and the fruition of years of diligent work and athletic training.

“The anticipation is a little nerve-wracking, but I am mostly excited,” Babar said before leaving for the big event. “This is what I’ve dreamt of for so long – to represent my country at the World Cup – it’s what every player aspires to accomplish.

“This is not only a great opportunity to showcase my skills, but to also boost the sport in the United States and put American cricket on the map.”

Babar’s cricket career dates back to when he was 5 years old playing pick-up cricket in streets and alleyways of his native, Karachi, Pakistan. There, he played with teenagers and men four and five times times his age, standing his ground in the pitch and rapidly improving as a player.

He credits his three brothers, who realized from a young age that Babar had natural talent and pushed him to improve and mature.

“My old neighborhood inspired me, made me passionate about the sport,” Babar said. “There, everyone plays, talks about and lives cricket.

The older players didn’t take it easy on me, either. I learned some tough lessons, but I am a better player because of it.”

When he was 14, Babar’s family emigrated to the United States and settled in Bolingbrook after his father accepted a position at a growing IT company in the western suburbs. Barbar now lives in Gurnee and also trained in Gurnee in preparation for the

cup qualifiers.

For two years, Babar rarely picked up a cricket bat because of fringe popularity.

“I was a little worried,” Babar said. “Compared to Pakistan, cricket isn’t that relevant in the United States.

When I first moved here, I didn’t know think there were any local cricket leagues.”

But his brother’s friends soon notified him about the burgeoning Bolingbrook Premiere League and Midwest Cricket Conference.

Since then, he has played for four years with multiple teams in Bolingbrook and the surrounding area. Babar has also traveled and played in

regional cricket tournaments and national competitions in New York and Dallas.

His stellar batting skills resonated with national cricket coaches. Babar was originally named to the 15-man World Cup qualifier roster, but was then replaced when the roster was shuffled.

Now a permanent fixture on the roster, Babar is excited to again prove his worth.

“It’s the chance of a lifetime and I will make the most of it,” Babar said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun, I just want to play my best and hopefully help my team advance through the qualifying stages.”

Gurnee police to target impaired drivers

By GURNEE SUBURBAN LIFE editorial@gurneesuburbanlife.com The Gurnee Police Department recently secured a traffic enforcement grant through the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety. This is the first campaign of six that will be conducted during the 2013-2014 grant year.

From Nov. 18 to Dec. 3, the police department will deploy saturation patrols to remove drunk and drugged drivers from the roadways. Officers will also focus on safety belt and child restraint device compliance from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The police are reminding residents that “even one drink can impair your judgment and increase the risk of getting arrested for driving drunk—or worse, the risk of having a crash while driving,” according to a release.

The release continues, “If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins. If you have been drinking, do not drive.

Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, use public transportation.

Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel.

If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someone’s life, and inaction could cost a life.”

Butcher shop thrives because of loyal customers

By JOHN ROSZKOWSKI editorial@gurneesuburbanlife.com As Thanksgiving approaches, Tony’s Butcher Shop in Grayslake gets flooded with orders from people looking to buy their all-natural, fresh turkeys for holiday dinner.

“Last year, we sold about 800 to 1,000 turkeys right before Thanksgiving,” said Tony’s Butcher Shop owner Chuck Hyatt, who expects to sell at least that many again this year.

“On the Monday before Thanksgiving, the coolers will be wall to wall (with turkeys),” he said. “We get all-natural, semi-free range turkeys, which are just unbelievable. They’re fresh and never frozen. It’s what turkey should taste like.”

Lake County, and even draws customers from Cook County and out-of-state.

While locally owned butcher shops are rarely seen these

days with large supermarkets and retail grocery centers, Hyatt believes the main reason for the shop’s success is the quality and variety

of meat products he offers.

Those items include steaks, choice ground beef, pork and beef roasts, London broil, different varieties of sausages, beef, deli meats, chicken, leg of lamb, baby back ribs, kabobs, stuffed pork chops and stuffed mushrooms, Lobster tails, Alaskan King Crab legs, among other items.

Hyatt said the shop sells Iowa’s Best top choice, corn-fed beef, which is antibiotic- and growth-hormone free, and customers can tell a big difference from the meat they buy in the supermarket.

“It’s all about the consistency of the meat,” he said.

“Every day it’s going to taste as good as the first time you bought it.”

Tony’s Butcher Shop has operated at the same location in Grayslake since 1997. Hyatt worked for the original owner, Tony Prignetts, for about a year before buying the business nine years ago. Hyatt

“I figure if it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” he said with a chuckle.

Colleen Muno of Grayslake said she has been coming to the butcher shop since it opened about 17 years ago.

“Their sausage is all homemade. I love their hot dogs. They’re homemade, too,” she said. “Their stuffed mushrooms are really good. I take those to many parties. All their meats are unbelievable.”

Craig Beatovic, a former Grayslake resident who now lives in Chicago, still stops in Tony’s Butcher Shop whenever he’s in the area.

While the prices are somewhat higher than the supermarket, “it’s not expensive when you realize the quality of meat they have,” he said.

Beatovic said he recently bought some steaks from Tony’s Butcher Shop and other steaks from Mariano’s supermarket to do a taste test comparison. He, along with his girlfriend and girlfriend’s nephew, tried each of the steaks and all preferred the ones from Tony’s.

“When we tasted it, Tony’s was hands down the winner after just one bite,” he said. “It’s just a nice, hometown butcher shop.”

Customers also enjoy the personal touch they get at the butcher shop, which they won’t find in large chain supermarkets.

Muno said she enjoys chatting with Hyatt and the other employees in the shop, talking about family, community events or local sports.

“They’re like family. They know you by name,” she said.

Charley Hyatt, 25, has worked in the butcher shop with his dad since he was a sophomore in high school.

“I enjoy the customer-service side of it, people leaving with a smile is a good feeling,” he said. “It’s good to get to know the customers and see their kids grow up as you’re growing up too.”

“You’re learning a trade that’s kind of a dying breed,” he said. “You don’t see many butcher shops anymore. It just brings you back to a time when things were a little slower, when there weren’t the big supermarkets. It just brings you back to a simpler time.”

Tony’s Butcher Shop is open daily, closing only on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Easter.

Chuck Hyatt said the shop is always busy around major holidays and also gets a lot of business from birthday parties, graduation parties, anniversaries or other special occasions.

“I try to do the best I can, day in and day out,” he said. “You can’t put a price on something you love doing.”

Residents remember day JKF was shot

On Nov. 22, 1963, he was assassinated as he rode in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, TX. On the 50th anniversary of his assassination, some Lake County residents remember where they were when the president was shot.

“I had just come home from the hospital with my son. He was born Nov. 11, 1963,” said Gail Gudgeon of Gurnee.

Gudgeon was watching a soap opera on TV while nursing her newborn son, Daniel Gudgeon Jr, when the episode was interrupted to announce the tragedy.

She was alone with Daniel and immediately tried calling her husband to tell him the news.

“It wasn’t like it is now, how everyone has a cell phone and there are so many channels on TV,” Gail said. “It was a trickling down of information; we were glued to the TV to find out what had happened.”

Gail said she remembers watching scores of people standing outside of what she thinks was a Chicago news station, crying.

Rich Lahey of Wildwood was 21 years old and an apprentice electrician on a job when he heard the news from a coworker who came running into the apartment building screaming, “The president’s been shot.”

“My first thought was, ‘Why?’” Lahey said.

For him, not only did that represent a sad day for the nation, he said he also learned a valuable lesson at his young age.

“You always kiss your wife before you say goodbye,” Lahey said. He also has theories of who was behind the shooting. He believes it was the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) or the mob.

Lahey is not alone with those theories. According to a 2013 Gallup Poll, the majority of Americans (61 percent) still believe others besides Lee Harvey Oswald were involved in the assassination of the president. The percentage, the poll shows, is the lowest found in nearly 50 years.

Still, those who believe Oswald did not act alone, such as Wildwood resident Tudy Beinlich, say it’s not easy to understand that one man could have done that.

Beinlich said she believes the mob was involved.

She recalls where she was when she heard the news.

At 25 years old and a mother of seven, “I was in the kitchen cooking when my oldest son came running from the playroom where they were watching television,” Beinlich said. “My heart dropped in disbelief. When I saw it for myself it was just frightening.”

Beinlich said she began to shake and her children got scared. Tim, her oldest who had delivered the news, was also shaking. He was 6 years old, she said.

For Beinlich, that day marked the end of a time when she felt safe. She compared the feeling to the

one she had after the World Trade Center was struck by airplanes in a terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

“I thought to myself, ‘This can’t be happening, this is the United States.’ If it could happen to the president, it could happen to anyone,” Beinlich said.

The days following the shooting were a daze and a blur for Gurnee resident Kathleen Fahey.

Fahey was at Notre Dame High School in Chicago. She was in sewing class when the news of the shooting was announced over the intercom. She said everyone was crying after the announcement.

She thinks the school for girls let the students stay home for days after the shooting so they could watch the funeral on TV. Fahey laments the country never got to see what the first Catholic president could do and whether he would have been reelected to a second term in office.

She’s also believes in the assassination conspiracy.

“I don’t think we’ll ever know,” Fahey said.

and PBS, visited Warren to learn more about it. The station is in the process of creating a documentary about educational systems in South Korea vs. America, and Warren stood out enough to feature. KBS visited each campus and interviewed a few select students on their personal opinions about flipped classrooms and its effects on their lives.

As I was present in the room during the interviews, I can say that the interviewees generally had positive opinions about flipped classrooms. Some even reported that their grades have benefited from the system, as well as their teacher-student relationships.

In the end, the effects of the flipped classroom system are different for every student, as every student has different styles of learning.

This teaching style also poses a great deal of responsibility on the student to go home each night and put aside time to learn.

Already some students have said that with distractions like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, it is very difficult to stay on task.

But, there are also students who say going on social media to ask friends homework-related questions is helping. I guess only time will tell if it indeed does have positive effects.

Over the last few years, Warren Township High school has been taking initiatives to improve the educational resources available to its students. One particular method has captured the attention of students, teachers and parents alike: The flipped classroom system.

What are flipped classes? Basically, it is a class system in which the teacher, rather than teaching in class, makes a video of the lesson and posts in online for his or her students to view. These online video lectures allow teachers to use class time to answer questions and for students to receive help while doing homework – hence the name, “flipped classroom.”

Opinions about this method have been very controversial.

“There is an economical benefit to this system,” says a promoter for flipped classrooms. “Not all students have access to private tutors, and this flipped classroom will allow their teachers to become the private tutor. It is economic democracy in the educational system.”

A former Warren student Gido Park comments “they should really stop that.

Teachers are [here] to teach ... not make videos. That is awful.”

Another student argues, “I think that certain classes would benefit from flipped classes, but some [are] best left alone. Sometimes it’s the class as a whole that makes learning more productive. People bounce off ideas off of each other – we learn to think in other ways than just our own.”

Are flipped classrooms even worth considering?

Rams’ playmakers among NFL’s best-kept secrets Hub Arkush

Get ready, Bears fans. You’re about to meet some of the best-kept secrets in the NFL. The Bears will face the St. Louis Rams in week 12, and while the sum of its parts is a pedestrian 4-6, there are some young studs on this ballclub who can do some real damage.

On paper, this looks like a team the Bears should be able to handle. That’s what the Indianapolis Colts thought two weeks ago before the Rams stormed into Indianapolis and blew them off the field by a 38-8 margin.

There are other danger signs.

This will be only the second game the Bears have played indoors this year. Their first was in Detroit, where they played their worst game of the season, falling 40-32.

The Rams will be the second team

the Bears have faced this year coming off a bye. The Lions came into Chicago for their second meeting after their weekend off and knocked off the Bears, 21-19.

Let’s meet Tavon Austin. The Rams traded up eight spots in the first round of this year’s draft to take the 5-foot-8-inch, 176-pound mighty mite out of West Virginia, who, until the Colts game, appeared to be just kind of finding his way. In Indianapolis, he caught 57- and 81-yard touchdowns, and returned four punts for 145 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown.

Think Devin Hester, but this guy can play wide receiver, too.

St. Louis features a quartet of young running backs – Zac Stacy, Daryl Richardson, Benny Cunningham and Isaiah Pead.

Stacy is the new No. 1, with 129 rushes and 537 yards, a 4.2 average and three touchdowns rushing. He also has caught 15 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown receiving. All four backs catch the ball out of the backfield. Richardson has been banged up, and Pead,

the highest draft choice of the four, is buried on the bench.

The Rams struggle at receiver.

Chris Givens is their No. 1 with 28 receptions and 463 yards for a 16.5 average. Beyond Austin, who has 33 receptions for 345 yards and four touchdowns, Austin Pettis and Brian Quick fill out this pedestrian group.

While the Bears were recruiting Martellus Bennett in free agency, the Rams went shopping for Jared Cook.

He has 33 receptions for 428 yards and three touchdowns. No. 2 tight end Lance Kendricks is a factor as well with 23 receptions, 172 yards and three touchdowns.

Like the Bears, the Rams are in the hands of their backup quarterback, Kellen Clemens. With the franchise, Sam Bradford, out for the year with an ACL tear, Clemens has completed 46 of 86 throws, a 53.5 completion rate, for 634 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions and a 79.3 passer rating. He’s been OK, but nowhere near as effective as Josh McCown. Clemens may be the weak link right now.

The best matchup of the game will feature Jake Long, who is once again healthy and one of the best left tackles in the game, going head-to-head with Julius Peppers.

Third-year player Robert Quinn is the NFL’s breakout defensive player of the year. Known as “Little Julius” at North Carolina – an ode to Peppers – before the Rams chose him with the 14th pick in the 2011 first round, Quinn already has 12 sacks and five forced fumbles.

He is complimented on the other end by Kyle Long’s big brother, Chris, the second player taken in the 2008 draft. Chris Long has 6½ sacks, one forced fumble and two recovered.

Linebackers James Laurinaitis and Alec Ogletree and defensive tackle Michael Brockers are three more first round picks, and Janoris Jenkins, who the Rams took with the 39th pick in the 2012 draft, are all playmakers.

This is a big-play defense that is getting better every week. Bears fans best hope they aren’t catching it at the worst possible time.

Rainey, who was waived earlier in the year by Cleveland, is owned in only 2.2 percent of ESPN leagues.

The general consensus was that he would split time with Brian Leonard. In the past two weeks, Rainey has asserted himself, and is clearly the more effective of the two backs.

Verdict: Rainey likely will be the guy in Tampa the rest of the way. However, the Bucs’ schedule is brutal. Owners expecting a repeat of week 11 will be disappointed.

Week 11 Performance: Six receptions, 193 yards, one touchdown Until week 11, Floyd was averaging about six fantasy points per game. I was actually surprised to learn that he is owned in 63.3 percent of ESPN leagues. Those 63 percent must have known something, because Floyd went off for 27 points in week 11. The Cardinals have a favorable schedule the next four weeks, but face the Seahawks and 49ers in weeks 16 and 17.

Verdict: Definitely worth a roster spot, Floyd is a decent No. 3 wide receiver or flex option the rest of the way.

Matt McGloin, QB, Oakland Week 11 Performance: 197 yards passing, three touchdowns If you are looking for a back-up quarterback, here’s one thing we know about McGloin: He’s available (owned in

0.2 percent of ESPN leagues).

According to the scuttlebutt, McGloin will be given every opportunity to keep the starting job for the rest of the year.

Verdict: Perhaps McGloin catches on and develops into a solid pro. He has no fantasy value this season, however.

Garrett Graham, TE, Houston Week 11 Performance: Seven receptions, 136 yards, one touchdown For those in need of a tight end, Graham is owned in about 20 percent of ESPN leagues. He erupted in week 11, scoring his first touchdown since week 5. Owen Daniels could return to the Texans this year, but, given the season Houston is having, it would make more sense to let him sit out the rest of the year.

Verdict: Graham would be a nice play in week 12 against the Jags. His value after this week is negligible.

Week 11 featured a number of surprise breakout performers. Some, like Rashad Jennings and Michael Floyd, already were owned in many fantasy leagues. Although these unlikely stars were most often fantasy benchwarmers, owners wise (or lucky) enough to start them received a huge boost in week 11.

Other breakout performers came from nowhere. These players, such as Bobby Rainey, most likely reside in waiver land, and are sure to be hot pick-ups this week.

As we have learned over the years, one breakout performance does not ensure future productivity. Let’s review the unlikely fantasy stars from week 11, and try to separate the one-week wonders from those worthy of a spot on your roster.

Week 11 Performance: 22 carries, 150 yards, one touchdown.

Jennings is owned in less than half (44 percent) of ESPN leagues. Veteran fantasy players are familiar with Jennings – he has had multiple opportunities to fill in for current teammate Darren McFadden and previously for Maurice Jones-Drew. Until recently, he never had failed to disappoint. In the past three weeks, however, he has averaged more than 18 points. In the next two weeks, Jennings has favorable matchups at home versus Tennessee and at Dallas. In weeks 14 and 15, things get tougher (at Jets and versus Kansas City).

Verdict: McFadden’s return is not certain. Jennings is a decent stopgap for the next two weeks.

Birders discover rare flycatcher in county Sheryl DeVore

Jim Solum of Gurnee called me late afternoon Nov. 11 when I was getting ready to leave work. A Scissor-tailed Flycatcher had been discovered by my husband, Steve Bailey, at the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve in Lake County.

What? Is it still there? I’m coming!

This flycatcher is what’s called a rarity or vagrant in the birder’s dictionary. It belonged in Mexico, not here, and it had only been seen in Lake County once before. The word spread over the Internet and via text messages and soon, birders who wanted to add that species to their Illinois or Lake County life list went out to see it.

I don’t chase all rarities in Illinois or Lake County.

Some of them, like a Cassin’s Sparrow that appeared in Waukegan a few years ago don’t interest me much. It was not an eye-catcher like the flycatcher; in fact, it was extremely difficult, in my view, to identify it.

But the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher is gorgeous. It almost looks like a bird of paradise with its long, streaming tail feathers that give it a forked appearance when in flight.

It sports salmon pink on its shoulder and sides, plus an even brighter pink underneath its wings, which you can see when the bird flies.

Even more remarkable to me and to Sonny Cohen, a Highland Park resident who also went to the see the bird, was that the flycatcher was lurking in a lovely field of native grasses that could have become a golf course. The Lake County Forest Preserves, which owns Fort Sheridan Preserve, decided not to

convert it to a golf course because the public entity was not making enough money on its other golf courses. Now this flycatcher, who had flown a long way, had a place to stay, eat and roost.

When I arrived, the sun was ebbing toward the horizon, the nearby oaks glowed in their autumn garb and the field of grasses shone amber.

Perched atop one of the leafless shrubs in the grasses was the bird of the day.

It then flew into the air to grab an insect, and earlier had been seen eating a cricket. It is known for making acrobatic courtship displays, tumbling in the air to attract a female.

Sonny and his wife, Rena Cohen, viewed the flycatcher through a birding scope, which brings a bird in even closer than binoculars. Sonny admitted he almost felt like crying seeing this bird where a golf course could have been.

He’s been a staunch proponent of returning the land to its natural state.

Jim Solum said this was his first Lake County record for the bird, and Jeff Sundberg of Libertyville said it was his 300th bird species seen in Lake County.

David B. Johnson of Buffalo Grove luckily was working at home that day instead of at his downtown Chicago office, so he got to tick it off his Lake County list as well. Johnson holds the record for most bird species seen in Lake County.

The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher breeds through the south-central United States and into northeastern Mexico; it migrates to southern Mexico and Central America for the winter, with some occasionally remaining in south Florida.

This species has expanded its breeding range northward into southern Illinois. In 2001, a pair successfully bred at

Union County Conservation Area. Since 1865, close to 100 Scissor-tailed Flycatchers have been documented in Illinois.

Why birds that should be flying south end up north in fall remains a mystery, but wind strength and direction could blow a bird off course.

The last time I saw Scissor-tailed Flycatchers was when hundreds were stream-

ing overhead in Mexico, flying south. It was one of those natural outdoor experiences you never forget The Fort Sheridan Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was last seen Nov. 12. My hope is that it headed back south where it belongs.
