Fight cabin fever at annual Frosty Fest

By JESSE CARPENDER aZXig\e[\i7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd GURNEE – Families looking to cure cabin fever may find it at the sixth annual Frosty Fest at Bittersweet Golf Club, which offers old-fashioned winter fun.

Frosty Fest has been held by the Gurnee Park District at Viking Park for five years, but this year it’s taking off with help from the village.

Changing the locale to the village-owned golf course will have a big impact on the festivities, said Carrie Suarez, Frosty Fest coordinator for the village.

Mayor Kristina Kovarik said the event is a nice collaboration between the Park District and the village.

“It utilizes the beautiful setting at Bittersweet to expand this very successful annual event,” Kovarik said. “That’s a win-win for all our residents.”

Suarez said she expects a large turnout.

“We’re hoping for upwards of 1,000 people, and we think there will be snow this year,” Suarez said.

Snow is an important factor, with activities planned such as snowman building, snow painting with spray bottles of food coloring and sledding.

The event also will feature snowshoeing by candlelight with help from Warren Special Recreation Association.

“Our hope is to get many participants out to put on our snowshoes and take a quick trek around the course,” said Amber Bodame, coach for WSRA’s team of Special Olympics snowshoers. “We will have snowshoes for adults and kids. It should be a fun time and hopefully a way to introduce snowshoeing to families.”

Attendees can visit a photo booth with wintry Bittersweet grounds as the backdrop, then take part in a craft activity to create a frame. Inside the Bittersweet clubhouse, they can drink hot cocoa and enjoy appetizers provided by the club.

The club restaurant will be open.

Deb Rawaillot and Mike Rawaillot, Adopt-A-Husky volunteers, will give dog sled demonstrations with their team of six huskies. Ice sculptors from Magnificent Carvings will work on creations.

Kristi Murray, special events coordinator for Gurnee Park District, said she expects the biggest draw will be horsedrawn carriage rides.

“This year we’ll be loading [at Bittersweet], and the ride will go through the neighborhood across the street,” Murray said. “It should be exciting for the participants and the

people in that neighborhood.”

Murray said Frosty Fest evolved from a December 2009 holiday event and has grown each year.

“We had a lot of success bringing people to Bittersweet with Families on the Fairway,” she said. “It’s exciting to up the ante.”

Frosty Fest is a thank you to Gurnee residents for their support, said Rich Koenig, operations manager for Bittersweet.

“We’re raising awareness of who we are and what we can offer,” Koenig said. “We’re trying to keep the village active.”

Adult daycare program fosters bonds between children, seniors

“See grandpa?” Camden said to Klein, 88, of Round Lake.

“Look,” Camden said to slow down Klein when he flipped the pages too quickly.

Klein has Alzheimer’s disease and is one of about 35 clients at the Adult Day Care Center for Intergenerational Care at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The Intergenerational Day Center is home to both an adult and child day care, which offers a unique opportunity for both age groups to co-mingle on a daily basis.

The Adult Day Care Center serves those with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other memory loss-related illnesses.

Children visit the seniors once a day and are encouraged to refer to the adults as “grandpa” or “grandma.”

While the adult day care program and child day care services are housed at the hospital’s Libertyville location, the program is open to the public and feels different than a hospital setting, said Peg Schuetz, manager of the Adult Day Care Center for Intergenerational Care.

“We’re at the hospital [if caregivers] are worried about medical issues, but we try not to run on a medical model but a social model. We want [clients] to have the best day they can,” Schuetz said. “We focus on the strengths and positive aspects of the person.”

In addition to visiting with the children, clients can exercise in the solarium, visit a nail salon, participate in singalongs with staff and spend time discussing current events, among other activities.

aZXig\e[\i7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd Grandwood Park, Lake Villa, Lindenhurst and Fox Lake Hills officially were admitted to the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency Dec. 10.

The communities are switching to Lake Michigan water because local wells are drying up, which is lowering water quality and raising questions of long-term stability, according to Lake County Public Works.

Gurnee and eight other charter members of CLCJAWA can expect an eight to 15 percent reduction in water rate costs in two years when the new members are receiving water from CLCJAWA, said executive director Darrell Blenniss.

Pat Muetz, Gurnee village administrator and member of CLCJAWA executive board, said using the American Public Works Association assumption that the average household uses 6,000 gallons per month, an average bill is $56.97 based on current rates.

The village adjusts water

rates annually, and “it will ultimately be a village board decision to whether or not some percentage of rate savings from CLCJAWA is passed along to customers,” Muetz said.

Muetz said adding Grandwood Park to CLCJAWA will not impact the infrastructure that currently serves Gurnee residents.

Eventually, a pipe connecting CLCJAWA to Grandwood Park will run through Gurnee.

“We’re looking at Almond Road between Washington Street and Grand Avenue, but it’s in planning phases,” Muetz said.

Blenniss said Grandwood Park, Lake Villa, Lindenhurst and Fox Lake Hills can participate in CLCJAWA meetings, but Blenniss said they will not become formal members until the first construction contracts for more than $5 million are approved. The communities can expect to have Lake Michigan water by 2017.

“Right now, we’re working on design and engineering [to bring water from CLCJAWA to the new communities],” Blen-

niss said.

Grandwood Park and Fox Lake Hills are part of unincorporated Lake County Public Works water system, so the CLCJAWA board needed to approve the expansion of the Lake County service area, Blenniss said.

Grandwood Park will have its own pipe to CLCJAWA and will have a separate delivery point system from Gurnee.

Blenniss said in the long range there might be interconnections to Gurnee’s system.

Last year, Lake Villa, Lindenhurst, Volo, Wauconda and unincorporated Lake County including Grandwood Park and Fox Lake Hills – all part of the North-West Lake County Lake Michigan Water Planning Group – planned to join the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency.

Wauconda was voted out of the plans in 2013, but CLCJAWA is still working on a plan to include Volo, Blenniss said.

“They’re completely different projects geographically,” Blenniss said.

History teacher: Remind students of MLK

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is held the third Monday in February, giving students a day off from school. But Haight, a history and English language arts teacher at Prairie Crossing Charter School, wants to remind his students it’s not just a day to play XBox. “I think it’s important for the students to have historical context,” he said.

Haight has a tradition for the Friday before Martin Luther King Jr. day. The subject is personally significant; his parents participated in civil rights movement marches in the 1960s.

For the last eight years, Haight has shown a video clip of the famous “I Have A

Kylie Mohrmann, a senior at Warren Township High School, said high school teachers normally don’t address Martin Luther King Jr. Day beyond mentioning it as a day off. “When we were little, we’d watch this video about what the world would be like if he never existed,” she said. “I still remember it.”

Another Warren senior, Jamie Kreppin, said she would be interested if teachers addressed the significance of the day. “It would be interesting if they’d tie it into subjects, like how he affected literature,” she said.

Being a full-time caregiver meant Ward had to leave her husband and children at her Mundelein home to take care of her father in Round Lake.

In 2012 Ward and her family decided to place Klein in an assisted-living facility.

“I thought, ‘I miss my family, and this is getting really hard, getting to sleep in my bed just one night a week,’ ” she said.

But, that living arrangement was not in her father’s best interest, she said.

“It wasn’t for him, having Alzheimer’s,” she said. “Other [residents] would know they could leave their apartment or go on a field trip. My dad didn’t know that. He had a beautiful one-bedroom apartment, but all he did was sit in it unless somebody came and got him.

He was just sitting in his recliner and watching TV. After five months of that we brought him back home.”

Ward works from home and soon realized that she needed additional assistance caring for her father during the day.

“I can’t concentrate on work if he’s sitting [at home] and not doing something stimulating,” she said. “That’s when I started looking into adult daycare.”

Schuetz said caregivers often express concerns about feeling tired or frustrated.

“Some will say, ‘Mom isn’t what she used to be. She can’t dial a phone,’” Schuetz said. “It can be upsetting.”

The program runs from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. The center has a nurse on duty and offers help with transportation. “[Adult daycare] gives me the opportunity to do my job knowing that [my dad] is in a safe environment and being kept as active as possible,” Ward said. “He comes home every day in a great mood. I know my dad. The father I grew up with was an active man so I can tell when he’s bored. [The center staff] keep him moving throughout the day. They have exercise periods, they have the kids coming in.

“For Christmas he made a Christmas card, and for Halloween he decorated a pump-

kin. He comes home with these [crafts] and says, ‘I made this for you.’ ” Ward said the ongoing interaction with children is especially important for her father, who was active in coaching sports and other activities while she and her siblings were growing up.

“My dad has always loved kids so he’s naturally drawn to them,” she said. “One of his favorite things to do is sit outside and watch the kids at the park [across the street from his home], whether they’re practicing soccer or playing.”

Schuetz said the interaction between children and adults helps both parties practice key skills.

“They can build puzzles together, which helps with motor dexterity,” Schuetz said.

“You expect the grandparents to be helping the children, but the children end up helping the adults.”

Jennifer Sireci, program assistant with Adult Day Care, sees how the ongoing interaction between the two age groups helps build self-esteem in the little ones, as well.

Her daughter, Mindy Sireci, 1, is enrolled in Advocate’s Child Day Care program.

“She’s not shy when she’s interacting with the elderly,” Jennifer Sireci said. “It improves social skills. And for the elderly, it lights up their mood.

There’s so many activities they can do together – arts and crafts, music.”

The experience also helps children feel comfortable engaging with older adults and those with disabilities, Schuetz said.

“They get to learn tolerance,” she said. “They learn that not all older people have use of their arms, legs – or some need to use a walker.

They learn not to be afraid of them.”

The seniors look forward to the children’s visits. “It takes their minds of their aches and pains,” Schuetz said. “The adults sometimes are aware of their deficits, and they get anxious. This helps them tap into being a grandparent and things they can remember or relate to.

“Relationships are important here, and we try to build a personal relationship. It’s like a family. We work together.”

In 2013, four new locations opened – in Oak Forest, Ill., Nashville, Tenn., one in the Twin Cities area and one in Mexico. In October the nonprofit debuted the new 10,000-square-foot National Achievement Center in Hoffman Estates. GiGi’s Playhouse now has 16 locations in the U.S. and Mexico.

“We are estimating right now we’re going to open six more this year in 2014,” said Marc Portugal, development director.

GiGi University is a progressive learning program for young adults with Down syndrome. It teaches self-efficacy, self-confidence, health and wellness, personal interest and real-world skills among its lessons. Once a participant graduates from GiGi University, they move into Hugs and Mugs, which is an internship program that focuses on career skills.

Over the past two years, the

nonprofit GiGi’s Playhouse has received more than 100 inquiries from people all over the world seeking information on how to bring a GiGi’s Playhouse location to their community.

“What normally happens is families in a given market or a given community will reach out to us,” Portugal said.

Within one hour of being featured on “NBC Nightly News” on Dec. 26, the GiGi’s Playhouse website crashed from so much traffic, he said.

The organization’s Facebook page received 500 additional likes in one day and within the first 24 hours of the show airing, received several inquiries from people seeking to open a location in their community.

“Undoubtedly, some of the inquiries will follow through, and we’ll open in these communities,” Portugal said.

“Think about the domino effect and how many lives will be affected.”

All programming is free to participants.

Hugs and Mugs is a retail store within the National Achievement Center, which will open the first week of February in Hoffman Estates. “[The participants] will run all aspects of the business,”

Portugal said, adding the participants will be in charge of everything from designing mugs to completing inventory to providing customer service and more.

Site manager Bridget Trejo said once the retail part of Hugs and Mugs is open, they also would like to offer a cafe within the store. Students will graduate from Hugs and Mugs to jobs within the community.

Among other programming on tap for 2014 is meeting the needs of GiGi’s Spanish-speaking community by adding Spanish elements to existing programming.

An After School Homework Help Hoopla for School-Aged Children, and Fitness, Friends and Fun, will promote fitness activities like yoga, Zumba and Pilates for pre-teens through

young adults this year, as well.

“Everything we do here promotes a positive learning experience,” Trejo said. “Everything we do here is therapeutic and educational in nature.”

They’ll also launch a Parent Speaker Series covering topics related to Down syndrome.

With the added space of the National Achievement Center, GiGi’s Playhouse will keep adding programming to meet the demands of its participants. By the end of the year, GiGi’s Playhouse should offer more than 30 educational and therapeutic programs.

“Everybody comes in here and works hard, but it’s also a lot of fun,” Trejo said.

For Mary Jo Shepherd and 8-year-old daughter Annabelle of Schaumburg, GiGi’s Playhouse has been a dream

come true. The two have been attending programming since Annabelle was just a couple of weeks old.

“It’s just been so positive and so uplifting,” Shepherd said.

Annabelle currently participates in cheerleading, math tutoring, literacy tutoring, Kids Club and Hop and Skip and Jump, among other programs.

While the cheerleading has helped Annabelle gain confidence, the literacy and math tutoring have helped her keep up with her fellow classmates.

“I know my daughter is a different kind of learner,” Shepherd said. “Having the literacy and math geared toward her gives her more of a chance to stay on target.”

What came naturally for you? What was more difficult?

I would say that evening gown came most naturally to me. The hardest part for me was swimsuit. The music is faster and it was harder for me to loosen up when everyone was watching me.

It ended up being one of the most fun parts of the competition. I even added a turn to my walk to set myself apart from the competition.

BARRINGTON – Barrington High School senior Brittany Albrecht was one of the four Barrington teens who competed in the Miss Illinois Teen USA competition last summer, advancing to the final pageant in November at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Chicago.

Albrecht told Barrington Suburban Life reporter Tarah Thorne more about her pageant experience and receiving an individual first place award for her evening gown.

Are you happy with your outcome? Would you do another pageant in the future?

Did you know three other Barrington teens were applying for the competition with you last summer?

I had no clue that other girls from Barrington were applying for the competition. It’s actually pretty funny, because I knew all three of them.

Alexia Vigue (junior) and I used to be on Premier Poms together. When we found out we were both competing, we decided to be roommates. We grew a lot closer as the pageant approached and during the weekend.

Paola Ortega (senior) had been in some of my classes before so I knew her from school. Victoria Geraci (alumna) and I had met during the past school year in our psychology class.

How did you prepare?

There are three judged parts of the Miss Illinois Teen USA pageant: interview, swimsuit and evening gown.

For the interview competition, I practiced doing mock interviews with my pageant coach, Mrs. Cyd Glavich. She was a former Miss Indiana who went on to the Miss America pageant. She helped me with my pageant walk and

the proper way to sit. Believe it or not, there is a specific way to walk for pageants. For swimsuit, we practiced a faster walk. She also taught me how to “float” across the stage in my evening gown.

What led you to pursue this experience?

Were you anxious at all?

Miss Illinois Teen USA was actually my first pageant. I have always watched Miss USA and Miss America on TV and wondered what it would be like to be in a pageant. I received a mailing for the pageant over the summer. My mom showed it to me because she knew I had been interested. We looked at each other and said, “Why not?”

Because I’ve had a lot of stage experience from musicals and dance, the thought of being on the stage didn’t scare me at all. However, I was quite nervous for my personal interview with the judges. My mom drove me downtown that day and gave me helpful words of encouragement. I also said a little prayer before each part of the competition.

Pageants can be costly. How did you raise money?

What did the judges look for?

Everything adds up – the dresses, swimsuit, interview outfit, jewelry, accessories, shoes, headshots, hair, nail and makeup appointments, tanning products, hotel stay and travel.

I fundraised by asking family, friends and local businesses to sponsor me. I am so grateful to everyone who supported me.

They look for a poised, articulate, genuine and confident girl who would make a good representative of the pageant, sponsors and state.

The judges pay attention to the overall fitness of the girl and how she demonstrates a healthy lifestyle in the swimsuit competition. The focus is narrowed on the beauty of the face and figure, as well as elegance and

I’m so happy with this outcome.

With this being my first pageant, this is a huge accomplishment. I would definitely do another pageant in the future.

You won the evening gown competition.

How did you find the perfect gown?

My gown was from A’Lamour in Barrington. When I was searching for my gown, I knew it had to be two things: blue and form-fitting. Blue is my favorite color, and my pageant coach advised me to pick a form-fitting dress.

What would your advice be to younger girls looking to become involved in pageant competitions?

I would tell them to go for it and follow their dreams. The pageant was such a great experience for me. It honestly is not about winning at all. It is about bettering yourself as an individual and challenging yourself in ways you never would otherwise. I’ve gained so much confidence and learned many life skills.

I would advise younger girls to focus on their inner beauty and make great friendships with other girls competing.

The pageant was a time in my life that I will never forget, nor would I ever change.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA \[`kfi`Xc7cXb\ZflekpjlYliYXec`]\%Zfd WAUKEGAN – The Lake County Jail is the first registered GED testing site in the county, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release last week.

In July 2013, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office applied to be a registered GED test administrator for the county through Pearson VUE. This certification allows the Lake County Jail to test students every week rather than test based on the College of Lake County’s schedule.

Inmates interested in obtaining a GED do coursework at their own pace. Once they are ready, they take a total of four exams required by Illinois law. Instructors from the College of Lake County’s Adult Education Department, along with volunteer

tutors, teach the inmates for two-hour sessions, Monday through Wednesday.

The jail has a 93 percent pass rate for the four exams, according to the release.

The jail has been participating in the GED program with the college for nearly 30 years.

While the average inmate is in jail custody for two to three months, the past three years averaged 69 inmates obtaining their GEDs. In 2012, 86 inmates graduated. In 2013, 88 inmates graduated with their GED. Many more inmates begin the GED process and complete their GED at the college after their release from custody.

In the past four years, one inmate graduate was awarded a scholarship to attend the College of Lake County and successfully completed a course of study.

GURNEE – Gurnee youth aged 8 to 12 can develop science, technology, engineering and math skills playing the popular computer game Minecraft in an upcoming Gurnee Park District program.

Computer Explorers, which contracts TechStars programs for the Park District, is harnessing the power of Minecraft to teach children 21st century skills from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Jan. 22 through March 12.

“Minecraft lets children build their own worlds,” said Computer Explorers Director Lori Gross. “At its best and if played right, the game can be tremendously imaginative and educational.”

According to Computer Explorers, Minecraft can be used as an educational tool to teach city planning, languages and physics.

Working through networked computers, the students are led through a scenario created by

“As they develop their world, they gain insight into the various elements of survival, settlement and exploration in a way that keeps them constantly observing, hypothesizing and testing,” Gross said.

“We don’t only want the kids to learn the vocabulary and skill set of 21st century technology, but we want to reinforce

the core curriculum skills they learn in school.”

Computer Explorers teach science, technology ,engineering and math skills by offering tech-based classes year-round through public and parochial schools, park districts, preschools, community centers and summer camps throughout the northern suburbs of Chicago.

Since October, the program navigators have educated 6,700 people and helped about 1,800 people complete applications.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois residents will pay less than residents in many other states under the Healthcare Marketplace, and benefits may be even more affordable because of subsidies offered by the federal government.

Individuals and families have until March 31 to enroll in a Marketplace health plan.

County encourages residents to check radon levels with kit SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA \[`kfi`Xc7cXb\ZflekpjlYliYXec`]\%Zfd January has been designated National Radon Action Month by the Environmental Protection Agency.

In connection with this observance, the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is encouraging residents to check the radon levels of their homes or apartments during the winter months.

“The best time to check for radon is during cold weather when windows and doors remain closed,” said Tony Beltran, the health department’s executive director.

“Radon increases your risk of lung cancer so it is important to check the level in your home,” he said.

Short-term test kits are available through the health department for $10.

The cost includes return postage, laboratory analysis and interpretation by health department staff.

Test kits are also avail-

able from area hardware and building supply stores.

Studies show that radon occurs in every county in Illinois.

One study found that 13 percent of the homes that were tested in Lake County had indoor radon levels of 4 picocuries per liter of air or greater.

Radon, an odorless and colorless gas naturally found in rock and soil, seeps into homes from the soil through cracks in the basement floor and foundation, crawl spaces, poorly sealed sump pumps, floor drains, porous cinder block walls and other foundation floor and wall penetrations.

Even cool indoor temperatures of 60 degrees can eventually trigger hypothermia. Symptoms include shivering, drowsiness, slurred speech, hallucinations and slow and shallow breathing. If you notice these symptoms in a person, take his or her tempera-

ture. If it is 95 degrees or below, call a doctor or ambulance or take the victim directly to the hospital.

When outdoors, be aware of the added effect of wind chill.

For example, a 20-degree air temperature combined with a 20 mph wind has the effect of 10 degrees below zero on the human body. =ifjkY`k\1 When spending long periods of time outdoors, be alert for signs of frostbite.

It initially occurs in the nose, ears, fingers and toes and can happen at any temperature below 32 degrees. Frostbitten skin is whitish and stiff and feels numb rather than painful.

To prevent frostbite, wear hats that cover the ears, scarves or masks to cover the face and several layers of clothing to trap body heat. Mittens are better than gloves.

To treat frostbitten skin, do not rub the area, since friction can cause further skin damage. Seek medical attention immediately. Warm the affected parts of the body with warm

water for 20 to 40 minutes. Wrap the frostbitten area in blankets, sweaters, etc.

Jefn J_fm\c`e^1 Avoid shoveling snow unless you are in good physical condition. If you become breathless, stop, go indoors and warm up before continuing. Overexertion can cause heart attacks, and lifting heavy snow can cause back ailments.

To be safe, there should be 8 inches of clear ice. While snowmobiling, also be aware that heavy or drifting snow can obscure fences, tree stumps and uneven ground. Also, be especially careful if a child is your passenger.

Carmel, Wauconda lead in boys hoops

By BILL PEMSTEIN \[`kfi`Xc7cXb\ZflekpjlYliYXec`]\%Zfd In the Lake County Suburban Life coverage area, there are a couple of very strong boys basketball teams. It starts with Tim Bowen’s club in Mundelein – the Carmel Corsairs.

After 22 years of Carmel finishing with a losing record, defensive whiz Bowen deserves some credit for the turnaround of the program.

Carmel won 11 of its first 14 games and doesn’t appear to fall by the wayside as January basketball kicks off. Carmel has plenty of height with Jack George (6-foot-10) and Nickai Poyser (6-6).

These Corsairs have plenty of scorers as well. They go by the names of Michael Barr, Billy Kirby and Chris Duff. And there is another Bowen on this club: Coach Bowen’s son, Lee Bowen.

The Wauconda Bulldogs seem to be the county’s second leading team. The Wauconda bus will head to Carmel Jan. 27.

Like Carmel, Wauconda is off to a good start. Dion Head has been a big scorer for the Bulldogs, who won 10 of their first 13 games. Carmel’s defense will have to deal with some gifted Wauconda scorers, including Ricky Sidlowski and Ben Carlson.

Coach Brian Moe’s team has six wins after winning five all of last year. There is help from the football team, as both Alex Lennartz and Malcolm Reed are contributing.

Charlie Anderson is a scoring threat, and he gets help from Sam Ruhlmann.

Next up are the Eagles from Lakes High School.

This young squad is making progress. Lakes won five of its first 14 games.

Jake Balliu is a steady player, and others who will contribute the rest of the way include Tramone Hudson and

Bennett Haviland.

Round Lake had four wins entering the second half.

Karnell Wright continues to play well.

So far, a few Division II and Division III colleges have contacted Warren High School’s Eric Gillespie about playing next year. No doubt not playing his junior year has hurt his recruiting effort.

Gillespie is an overnight sensation. The senior is one of the most important players on the Warren team that looks ready to make a play in the rugged North Suburban Conference Lake Division.

“He’s gotten a lot better,’’

said Warren coach Ryan Webber. “He matured a lot. I know he had a hard year last year, so I’m glad he stuck with <i`Z >`cc\jg`\ me. He’s a great kid with a high character.”

Last Thursday in Lake Forest, Gillespie had four points at halftime as Warren (9-6) held to a 25-20 over 12-game winner Lake Forest.

And then he exploded with three 3-pointers in the second half. He also added eight free throws in the fourth quarter to finish with a game-high 21 points. Warren beat Lake Forest 55-43.

“This was a big, big win,’’

Gillespie said. “It’s what we needed.”

Gillespie struggled early but stepped up when the game was on the line.

“In the first half, I wasn’t squaring up,’’ Gillespie said.

“In the second half, I started taking better shots.”

Despite having only one year to shine, Gillespie is thrilled to be on this Warren team.

“We never give up,’’ he said. “We still fight hard.

These guys have great personalities. They all are like brothers to me.”

Gillespie said missing his junior year was tough.

“It was hard to go through that,’’ Gillespie said. “But I still need to work on my late-

game situations and my defense, too.”

Webber said he thought his new star played just fine defense against Lake Forest.

“Our seniors played great,’’ Webber said. “Eric played great. He’s so good with the ball in his hands. And he’s like a two-guard as well.”

This strong Lake Forest club surged to a quick 12-4 lead and looked ready to handle the Blue Devils.

However, a rebound bucket from Adrian Deere and 3-point shot from James Betori pulled the Devils right into the game.

Warren dominated in the final quarter. Greg Swain’s three-point play followed up a Gillespie 3-pointer as Warren opened up a 39-34 lead. Swain added nine points to the Warren attack.

On Friday night, the opponent was Lake Zurich. Warren jumped ahead early with 21 points in the first quarter and held to beat the Bears 5545. Again, the 3-point attack was key. Gillespie led a balanced attack with 19 points.

He had four 3-pointers.

Deere was next with 18 points and three 3-pointers.

Betori checked in with a pair of 3-pointers and 12 points. Swain added eight points.

Salary cap could haunt the Bears As the Bears Vice President of Football Administration, General Counsel and lead contract negotiator Cliff Stein is one of the best “capologists” in the NFL. Nobody understands the salary cap or knows how to work with it better than Stein, and there are no better negotiators in the NFL either.

I can’t remember the last time the team targeted a free agent, convinced him to come to Chicago and Stein couldn’t fit him under the cap.

Still, the Bears will begin the 2014 NFL league year in a bit of salary cap hell and there’s very little Phil Emery and Stein can do about it without some painful cuts to the current roster.

The 2013 Salary cap was approximately $123 million and early projections are that it could go as high as $127 million in 2014. But of the current Bears under contract, nine Bears veterans, Jay Cutler, Julius Peppers, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, Lance Briggs, Jermon Bushrod, Martellus Bennett,

But the reality is getting younger and getting better, with limited financial resources to make up for any missed draft picks is a truly difficult situation to be in.

Linebackers coach Tim Tibesar and defensive line coach Mike Phair were fired but defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will return.

“We thank Mike and Tim for their effort and dedication.

They are men of high character and integrity,” Bears head coach Marc Trestman said in a statement Sunday. “These are not easy decisions and we do not attribute our lack of success on defense to two individuals.”

Both Tibesar and Phair’s units were marred by injuries. Thrust into the lineup,

rookies Jon Bostic and Khaseem Greene did not show the improvement the team wanted to see, especially down the stretch. The Bears were last in the league in run defense.

“I saw Khaseem do it right and Jon do it right, and I saw them both do it wrong,” Trestman said in his Jan. 2 news conference. “I did not see a consistency in their play.”

On the D-line, Henry Melton and Nate Collins both tore their ACL, while Julius Peppers and Shea McClellin did not produce up to expectations off the edges.

“We believe Mel is the right person to lead our defensive unit,” Trestman said. “He fully understands where we need to improve, has the skill set and leadership to oversee the changes that need to be made and to execute our plan to get the results we know are necessary.”

Trestman and Phil Emery were firm in their stance that, when healthy in the first three games, the defense played at a high level. That showed the faith they have in Tucker as a coordinator,

and he could be working with completely different personnel next season.

Tim Jennings, Stephen Paea and Briggs are the only regulars that should be back at their positions in 2014.

Major Wright, Corey Wootton, Melton, James Anderson, Williams, Charles Tillman, Jeremiah Ratliff and Collins are all free agents.

The futures of Chris Conte and Peppers are in question, and McClellin and Bostic could be at different positions.

With Tucker getting another year to prove himself, expect to see a more aggressive defense.

“We want a physical, fast, playmaking defense, a defense that causes disruption,” Emery said.

One game that sticks out as a potential blueprint of the

Bears’ 2014 defensive style is the win in Pittsburgh in Week Three.

According to Pro Football Focus, Ben Roethlisberger was under pressure on 20 plays, six more than any other Bears opposing quarterback.

They blitzed Big Ben 19 times, tied for the most all season.

After halftime, Roethlisberger started finding success under pressure, but the aggressive defense was too much. The Bears forced five turnovers in that 40-23 win.

As bad as the defense was, the Bears were a play away from winning the NFC North, which made the meltdown on that side of the ball all the more frustrating. Tucker gets another chance, and even though the coordinator is the same, expect the Bears’ defense to look much different next season.

Fostering friendship After-school club pairs special-needs middle-schoolers with peers

Peggie Aliperta’s special education students have just returned from a bowling field trip and are wired with energy.

School has been a blast for Aliperta and her students at Prairie Middle School since starting the Friends and Company Club in 2008 to foster relationships among students with and without disabilities.

Friends and Company meets once a month after school and has become a rewarding social opportunity for both students and staff – most recently collecting 1,931 books to donate to District 220 families in need.

“I can’t believe how big the club has become,” Aliperta said. “It’s neat to see my students who are shy in the classroom get talking with the other kids after school.”

The club has grown from 10 to 38 members since its beginning – with an even mix of special and regular education students. Friends and Company also is offered for Barrington middle school students at the Station Campus.

Aliperta said she hopes the group of mixed peers will carry their relationships into high school by volunteering with Best Buddies, Barrington High School’s nationally recognized equivalent of the middle school service program.

Eighth-grader Megan Miller said she joined Friends and Company three years ago because she has a special place in her heart for disabled students. Her cousin has special needs.

“It’s been fun to get my other friends involved,” Miller said. “I also like to talk to the special education students when I run into them at school.”

Miller said Friends and Company has inspired her to become a special education teacher when she gets older.

Sam Lenihan, a sixth-grade

special education student at Prairie, said he has most enjoyed meeting new friends and participating in the various after-school activities, such as making bracelets for the club’s book drive.

Friends and Company has been collecting canned goods for Barrington Giving Day, which serves District 220 families enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program, for the past five years.

Three years ago, the club kickstarted Book for Bracelets.

Members make beaded bracelets to give to every student and teacher who donates a book to Barrington Giving Day. “It’s a lot of fun,” eighthgrade special education student Bobby Hager said. “I like eating snacks and talking to the other kids.”

Other Friends and Company yearly activities include making placemats for the Barrington Area Council on Aging, playing board games with peers, making caramel apples, watching Prairie sporting events together and the ever-popular ice cream social, which celebrates the students’ accomplishments at the end of the year.

Aliperta and Prairie special education classroom assistant Edie O’Brien both joined the Barrington school district in 2006.
