VILLAGE OF
Glen Ellyn ILLINOIS
A WELCOMING NOTE On behalf of the Village Board and Staff, it is my honor and privilege to welcome you to Glen Ellyn as you shop, dine and explore this vibrant community we call home. We are so fortunate to be a part of a Village where residents and businesses are fully engaged in making our community an exceptional place to live and work. Glen Ellyn excels in citizen participation with a compassionate and involved community, sharing their skills and resources to serve others. Witnessing the changes that so many businesses have adopted in order to keep our community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic has been humbling and encouraging. It speaks to the incredible resiliency of our community and the care and support we have for one another. And yet, through all the challenges endured during the pandemic, the Village has continued to persevere and invest in our community. Restaurants and local businesses have evolved and grown while infrastructure improvements have continued so that the community can meet the needs of the next

generation. In 2021, the Village will complete the Civic Center Public Parking Garage and finalize plans for a significant downtown streetscape and utility project investment. These investments in our community set the stage for additional business growth throughout our commercial corridors as well welcoming large-scale events such as the Frida Kahlo Timeless Exhibit at the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage in 2021. Please continue to stay safe and enjoy all our community has to offer. I encourage you to shop and dine locally to continue to show our appreciation to our businesses and to keep our community thriving. Residents, businesses and visitors are encouraged to keep up-to-date on Glen Ellyn by visiting our website at www.glenellyn.org and follow the Village on social media including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

he first European-American Settlers arrived in this area in 1833, after members of the Potawatomi tribe were moved further west by the federal government. Three Babcock brothers made claims of land along what would become St. Charles Road and this settlement was called Babcock’s Grove. As additional families arrived, a log cabin schoolhouse was constructed near Five Corners and was the community’s first public building.
EARLY HISTORY
GLEN THEATER 1927
GLEN ART THEATER 2017
The Stacy family arrived and purchased land on what is now Geneva Road, where they constructed a wayside inn in 1846, a tavern for travelers and farmers on their way to market. This building is still on its original foundation and is Glen Ellyn’s first museum: Stacy’s Tavern Museum. The community became known as Stacy’s Corners. As the railroads planned their first tracks in this region, the residents of Stacy’s Corners tried to persuade the new railroad to lay tracks by their settlement. But Dr. Lewey Newton owned land a mile south in what we now call “downtown” Glen Ellyn. He built a train station at his own expense in 1848 which shifted the center of the community. This stop became known as Newton Station. In 1851, David Kelley became station agent. There was already a Newton town in Illinois, so Kelley named the town “Danby” for his birthplace in Vermont. The quiet country village of Danby changed its named in 1874 to Prospect Park, after some of the men who returned from the Civil War had altered the town’s reputation to “rowdyish” with their behavior. In the 1880s, Prospect Park transformed into a Chicago suburb. Successful businessman and author Thomas E. Hill settled here in 1885 with his wife Ellen. It is thought that the town’s name was changed to Glen Ellyn in honor of the Lewellyn family, and with the Welsh spelling of Ellen Hill’s first name. The creation of Lake Ellyn came by damming up a stream. The local mineral springs also attracted visitors and further changed the town’s character. The Glen Ellyn Hotel and Springs Company enhanced the springs and built Hotel Glen Ellyn, which was struck by lightning and destroyed by fire in 1906. Not long afterwards, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1907 and remains vibrant to this day.

Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce DINING GUIDE
Options for every flavor and occasion
By Chris Walker
W
hether it’s family friendly dining at Alfie’s Inn, Ki’s Steak & Seafood or Glen Oak Cafe, a special treat from Andy’s Frozen Custard or for a quick meal-to-go while on the run around town at Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers or Flips Beef & Gyros, Glen Ellyn has many wonderful dining options to keep residents close to home. “We have so many wonderful restaurants,” said Dawn Smith, executive director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. When asked the question, “What’s a good place to go to eat in Glen Ellyn?” there’s no wrong answer. Among the American, Irish, Italian American, Mexican and sushi restaurants, the sports bars, wine bars and cocktail places, the cafés, desserts and sweets specialty shops and small plates and more in town, you cannot go wrong. That includes fixtures such as Barone’s, a Glen Ellyn tradition since 1971, as well as relative newcomers, like the Main Street Pub, which will celebrate its fifth anniversary in Glen Ellyn this November. It includes independent, single-location establishments like Chicks ‘n Salsa, where they serve firegrilled chicken, the best fish tacos in town and Mexican specialties, or Two Hound Red which is Glen Ellyn’s very own brew pub and known as a foodie delight, as well as dozens of other restaurants. Annually, Glen Ellyn hosts a restaurant week where restaurants like Fire +
Wine, A Toda Madre or Maize +Mash are able to really show off their culinary skills and amazing chefs. There are expansive options in town between grabbing the best coffee and cinnamon roll at The Blackberry Market to picking up the freshest sushi from Hokkai Sushi on Roosevelt Road. Throughout the year, these restaurants are serving thousands, while also bringing folks to Glen Ellyn to take advantage of its many offerings. “We do have a vibrant dining scene here in Glen Ellyn that is welcoming,” Smith said. “And when you come out to do some shopping and exploring the streets downtown, you’re able to truly experience what Glen Ellyn has to offer.” Folks may not be out and about as much as in prior years due to the pandemic, and it’s certainly continuing to be challenging to diners and especially restaurant owners and staff. But all our restaurants appreciate every order as we continue through the pandemic. As we wonder when things will go back to normal, it’s the kind of question to ponder over some comfort food from the Village Links of Glen Ellyn, Ellyn’s Tap or one of the other fantastic options in Glen Ellyn. “There have been a lot of challenges with the pandemic and closures and dining in,” Smith said. “Hopefully soon the times will change.”

Who to call when you need help THE GLEN ELLYN VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY (GEVFC) has been providing emergency services to the town of Glen Ellyn since 1907. The Fire Company exemplifies that Glen Ellyn truly is a Village of Volunteers. The men and women of the Fire Company are a diverse group of individuals made up of accountants, pilots, business owners, executives, nurses, lawyers, salespeople and municipal
employees. While many communities have transitioned to a tax-supported fire department, the Volunteer Fire Company remains steadfastly committed to serving and protecting its neighbors. There is no greater service than “Neighbors Protecting Neighbors” in a time of need. For additional information on the GEVFC and becoming a volunteer firefighter, please visit www.glenellynfire.org.

In 2017, the Police Department moved into their new 29,000 square foot facility, located at 65 S. Park Boulevard. This station, which serves as the base of operations for the Department, offers enhanced safety features and a new
modern day facility to better serve the community. The GEPD responds to nearly 40,000 calls for service each year, and their staff excels at practicing a customer service approach to law enforcement. The Department offers several community programs including Coffee with the Cops, which is typically held monthly as an informal chat with the Chief, held in a group setting.

f you’re looking for the ordinary, you might want to go somewhere else. If, however, you’re in search of that special gift, outfit, or some great cuisine in a small-town setting, then you’ve come to the right place. Glen Ellyn is a very Norman Rockwell-esque village that’s walkable and trendy and oh, so charming smalltown America. “We have a diverse amount of stores and lots of businesses on our main corridors in our downtown area,” said Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dawn Smith. Main Street and Roosevelt Road offer a plethora of retail and dining experiences. “We have quite a few fashionable boutiques as well as familyfriendly independent downtown stores.” Those mom-and-pop shops not only offer an opportunity to discover off-the-beaten-track items you likely won’t find elsewhere, but when you shop independent venues, you’re supporting the local community. A not-to-miss

Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce SHOP GLEN ELLYN hidden gem is Stacy’s Corner in the Glen Ellyn Historical Center, carrying not only iconic Glen Ellyn gifts, but also an assortment of treasures at great prices. Another unique find is Olive ‘n Vinnie’s, where the owners offer the highest quality olive oils and balsamic flavors to improve any dish.
Blonde Boutique. That’s only a sampling of what Glen Ellyn has to offer. When you walk down its tree-lined streets, you never know what delights you’ll find next — Stam’s, a chocolate shop to die for; The JOY Bar’s healthy smoothies; and Glen Ellyn’s own downtown classic movie theater.
“We have everything from a luxury jewelry showroom of Costello’s, to old-school independent shops, such as a The Bike Hub, The Bookstore of Glen Ellyn and Paul’s Shoe Service that you won’t necessarily find in every town nowadays,” Smith said. “Our cheese store is really well-known for their charcuterie boards.
“Our slogan is, ‘There’s always something going on in Glen Ellyn,’” Smith said. And while Glen Ellyn is known for its unique downtown events throughout the year, those, as in other communities, have been temporarily sidelined due to COVID-19. Rest assured, they will return when the pandemic is over.
“Learning Express near Pete’s Fresh Market is the best toy store ever who will wrap and give you the best toy advice for any age.” Check out a few antique stores and the amazing resale boutiques like Treasure House. Glen Ellyn even has Young’s Appliances, in the heart of quaint downtown, who has the latest gadgets to make a dream kitchen! We have the most stylish boutiques in all DuPage such as Em & M’s, Jayne, Edie &
In the meantime, after you’ve finished your shopping excursion, drop into one of the local coffee shops for a cup to go, Smith suggested, “or on your way home grab some carryout at one of the amazing restaurants.” “Shopping small keeps money in the village,” Smith notes. “Those dollars help pay for infrastructure, parks, roads and events — all the things that make a community.”

len Ellyn boasts beautiful Lake Ellyn, once a renowned vacation destination. Today, this scenic Village offers homes with a variety of architectural styles set among rolling woodland hills and surrounded by mature trees and more than 25 parks and playground maintained by the Glen Ellyn Park District, the Willowbrook Wildlife Forest Preserve, the Village Links Golf Course. There is even access to the Illinois Prairie Path. Lake Ellyn Park, the scene of the annual Lake Ellyn Cardboard Regatta, is a picturesque spot where naturalists and volunteers have made great strides toward restoring the native oak savanna. The recently refurbished historic Lake Ellyn Boathouse is considered the “jewel” of Glen Ellyn. The Glen Ellyn Park District has ample activities yearround from platform tennis to disc golf. The District also operates Holes & Knolls, a 36-hole miniature golf course, an off-leash dog park, Sunset Pool, which features a waterslide and diving boards, a splash park, and two recreation centers which offer a range of camps and classes. In the winter, the sled hill and outdoor ice rinks are popular spots for cold-weather fun.
Village Links of Glen Ellyn is a Village owned golf course offering 27 holes of golf boasting a top-rated, 7,200-yard championship 18-hole course. The Links has hosted 47 USGA and PGA Tour Qualifying events. The regulation length 9-hole course is ideal for the serious golfer as well as casual play. SM-CL1823407

M
uch can be said about a village that has community service at its core, and Glen Ellyn is no exception. Whether it’s a large global organization such as the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn or a smaller local group such as Teen Parent Connection, non-profits make tangible differences in a community and offer a way for residents to give back while helping to improve the lives of those who are in need of a helping hand.
DuPage PADS, Community Housing Advocacy & Development and Bridge Communities all focus on providing shelter for individuals who struggle with housing. The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry provides support for community members who live with food security issues. Longstanding nonprofit groups provide a variety of services to the community, including Knights of Columbus-St. Petronille, Kiwanis Club of Glen Ellyn & Central DuPage and Glen Ellyn Lions Club, while NAMI DuPage, Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare, Supplies 4 Success and CASA of DuPage County help to protect the most vulnerable. The League of Women Voters keep us all informed to vote for the change we want at both the local and federal level. And let’s not forget our furry friends. The Animal Rescue Foundation strives to rescue and foster homeless dogs and cats while searching for new families for these animals. Reach out to these amazing Non-Profits as we are one community.
