General Information Special Recreation Association

The Kishwaukee Special Recreation Association (KSRA) is a joint effort between DeKalb, Genoa and Sycamore Park Districts to provide recreational programs for individuals with disabilities.

KSRA provides aides for individuals participating in programs and offers programs designed for individuals with special needs such as Camp Maple Leaf, an integrated summer camp. KSRA serves individuals with and without disabilities in the member communities regardless of age, ability, race or gender. The Park Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that was formed to enhance the physical, recreational, educational and cultural life of an individual and the community. The foundation develops financial support through grants, trusts, memorial donations and sponsorships; promotes use of recreational resources and services; increases recreational and educational programs offered; and holds and conveys land for future development of public parks. As we plan for our future, we continue to look to the past for inspiration. Growing together, we can create a new foundation for our children, our children’s children and for our community. General Information Registration Information Facility Rentals

Have your birthday party, reunion, shower or business function at the Recreation Center or at the Genoa Fitness Center or GFC Kidz Zone.

Take advantage of our space. We have the tables, chairs and indoor accommodations.

Chamberlain Recreation Center - This facility can comfortably seat 100 for table seating. Restrooms are right there and a sink and microwave are available for use. A refundable deposit of $150.00 is required. Resident discount (3 hours) $90.00; each additional hour $25.00. Non-resident (3 hours) $135.00; each additional hour $25.00 Administration Center – This facility can comfortably seat 50 for table seating. Restrooms are right there and the kitchen can be rented for an additional fee. A refundable deposit of $100.00 is required. Resident discount (3 hours) $50.00, with kitchen $75.00; each additional hour $20.00, with kitchen $25.00. Non-resident (3 hours) $75.00, with kitchen $100.00; each additional hour $20.00, with kitchen $25.00 Shelters – Outdoor shelters in Kiernan and Chamberlain Park can be rented. Electricity is available at Chamberlain Park Shelters. Port-olets are located near the shelters. A refundable deposit of $10.00 is required. Genoa Fitness Health & Wellness Center

The 14,000 square foot, State-of-the-art Fitness Center located at 333 E. First Street, above the police station, west side entrance.

Genoa and Kingston residents have equal access. Park Sites

Chamberlain Park – This well established park is 23 acres with one soccer field, three softball fields, skate park, tennis court, basketball court, shelters and playgrounds. The Aquatic Center, Recreation Center and Administration Offices are also located in Chamberlain Park, 400 East Second Street.

Derby Line Park – 1 acre neighborhood park located on Secretariat and War Admiral Drives with a playground.

Durham Park – This half acre park is home to our community sign, gazebo and memorial brick pathway, landscaping and benches.

Located at the intersection of Highway 72 and South Brown Street.

Genoa Woods – This natural area is 2.5 acres in size and is located on Oakview Lane.

Kiernan Park – This 43 acre park boasts eight soccer fields, shelter, playground and nature trail path. Located on N. Locust St. Lions Corner Park – This 6 acres of park includes playground, shelter, path, open recreation space, landscaping and benches. Located at Madison and Walnut Streets.

Riverbend Development—The Park District maintains three park spaces which include playground equipment with many other acres of open space.

Park Information & Expectations

• Please help keep your parks clean.

• Keep your pets leashed & curbed and pick up after them.

• No defacing property. • Use play equipment safely.

• No alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs are allowed on park property.

• Parks are Police patrolled. Park in posted areas only. No vehicles allowed on playing fields.

• Parks close at dusk • Adhere to 10 mph speed limit.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

• Program fees must be paid at time of registration.

Program fees may be paid by cash, check, Visa or MasterCard.

There will be a $15.00 fee for returned / non-sufficient funds checks.

• Walk-in Registration is accepted at the Administration Office – 400 E. 2nd Street, Chamberlain Park.

• Fax Registration is accepted with a Visa or MasterCard.

Download a registration form from our website and fax in. www.genoaparks.com Fax: 815-784-5051 • Mail-in registration is accepted with payment and will be processed when received. There is a mailbox located on the outside of the Administration Building.

• All programs have a minimum and maximum enrollment and are filled on a first paid basis. Please register by deadline date so we may determine if a class must be canceled or to make arrangements to accommodate a waiting list.

• The Park District reserves the right to cancel classes and make changes in the schedule and fees.

• Participants residing outside of the Genoa Township Park District boundaries are required to pay the non-resident fee if applicable.

• You will be notified of your registration only if the program has been canceled or filled.

• The Park District strives for quality programs. If you are unsatisfied with a program please contact the office.

• Refunds – a refund request form must be completed for a refund to be considered. Refunds are considered on an individual basis. NO REFUNDS ONCE A PROGRAM OR SESSION HAS ENDED. PLEASE NOTE OTHER REFUND GUIDELINES IN THE BROCHURE. • The Genoa Township Park District photographs and videotapes program participants. By registering for a program or involvement with an activity or event, the participant/ guardian consents to use by the park district of her/his likeness in park district advertising, website and other uses related to park district marketing and programming.

RESIDENT OR NON-RESIDENT The Genoa Township Park District charges a lower fee for residents of Genoa Township Park District and Riverbend Subdivision because the district is supported through local property taxes. Those persons living outside the boundaries and attending Genoa-Kingston School District may pay resident fees when programs are held at Genoa-Kingston Schools including Genoa Fitness Center. Individuals living outside the boundaries are required to pay the non-resident fee to apportion an equalizing fee to contribute to the overall financing of the park district on an equitable basis.

NON-RESIDENT MEMBERSHIP

A great opportunity to lower your cost of program fees, pool admissions, trip fees, etc. Individuals living outside of the Genoa Township Park District limit can pay a fee equivalent to what their tax contribution would be if living within the District boundaries. An annual membership fee is computed based on your home’s assessed value and the Park District’s tax rate. If you are interested in a membership, please bring in a copy of your most recent tax bill.

Join us to celebrate our 25th Annual Daddy/Daughter Dance at our Red Carpet Event. The DJ will play your requests and the crowd will get into the excitement. Each young lady will receive a corsage and commemorate photo. Space is limited so register early and save money. Those who pay at the door cannot be guaranteed a corsage. This Program introduces your child to skills in a fun, noncompetitive atmosphere. Dribbling, shooting and passing are stressed along with teamwork and sportsmanship. Smaller basketballs and lowered baskets will be used to ensure success.

Program consists of practice time and “game play”. Each player will receive a t-shirt and end of season medal. A smaller ball and lowered basket are used.

Teams will play against Hampshire and Lake in the Hills teams(depending on their registration numbers) and will have home and away games. Practices are held during the week and games on Saturdays. Boys and girls are separate divisions. Each player will receive a reversible jersey.

Super Sports On Wed early Here is the perfect place for you and your release too!

young athlete. Children are introduced to the fundamentals of sports and games in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere. P/T Super Sports will help your child become used to a sports practice structure while also allowing free -play time to help them explore. Group games and activities will be used to develop teamwork and good sportsmanship. A variety of sports such as soccer, T-Ball and kickball will be introduced to expose the sportsters to a wide range of activities. At least one parent must participate with the participant during class.

T-BALL

A great program to introduce your children to the sport of baseball/ softball. Participants are taught the basics of the game – throwing, catching, batting and rules. Enjoy the Football Season without the cold of winter. This class is designed to teach and enhance the skills of our future players.

Youth Volleyball Instruction

Photo Policy

The Genoa Park District and Genoa Fitness Center photographs and videotapes program participants. By registering for a program or involvement with an activity/event, the participant consents to use by the Genoa Park District or associated entities of her/his likeness in Park District promotions and other uses.

Cell Phone Use

The use of cell phones in Park District rest rooms or locker rooms is strictly prohibited. If caught seen using a cell phone you will be asked to leave park property. If inappropriate use of cell phone camera /video is observed Police will be called.

Refund Policy

Participants will receive full refund if they are dissatisfied with the program after the 1st class meeting. A refund request form must be submitted before the 2nd class meets to be eligible for the refund. Refunds can either be credited to your household account or mailed in check form upon request. Checks take approximately 2-3 weeks to process. ABSOLUTELY NO CASH REFUNDS. If you have an outstanding household balance, any refunds will be applied to that balance.

Iddy Biddy Pool School Swim Lessons

We have swim lessons! Iddy Biddy Pool School instructors are certified in teaching individuals who have special needs how to swim and to increase their comfort in the water by utilizing fun techniques. Once-a-week classes are small and are taught in warm water and heated air which creates a comfortable learning environment that increases relaxation and fun. The swimmer will work on increasing large motor skills, listening skills, and learning about safety. The classes are set to your schedule!

“One day I looked into the mirror and found that I didn’t necessarily like what I was seeing and realized that ever since I broke my leg in 2008 I had gained 80 lbs (80 lbs in 5 years). OH MY! Something had to change or I would be finding myself in the 300’s before I reached the age of 20. So I started off slowly making changes, and that really is the key SLOW, this has to be a lifestyle not a quick fix. I started working out again, yes I know AGAIN! Then my mom and I decided that I would train with Brittany. To be completely honest I thought I would completely hate training and eventually quite. Wrong!

AFTER I LOVED it, I would have never tried weightlifting before because that’s a guys thing, right? Nope! It’s my favorite part of working out. Brittany changes up the routines so you never get bored, she makes working out fun and challenging, the staff and her really get excited when you meet a goal!

When I first started working out I couldn’t do one machine for more than 10 minutes, now I’m on it for over an hour at least 4x a week. I don’t know why I didn’t stick with working out before February. I absolutely love it and seeing everyone up there, it makes getting up there a priority. With my motivation and dedication I have lost 32 lbs and counting with that being said I would like to give a quick shout out to some amazing people: Barbie (Barbara Barrett), Patti Person, Nikki Gudall, Heather Timmermann, Baylie Ullmark, Dylan Smith, Shelley Madey, Brittany Tewksbury, my Mom, and everyone else that has encouraged me in some way or another. Before coming to Genoa Fitness Center I struggled for 50+ years with diets and unstructured exercise. It never seemed to last long before I was falling back to where I had started. Then the Fitness Center opened up. As I was working out one day, Holly Ber the Fitness Center Director, spotted me and suggested I might want to think about working with a personal trainer. There are many investments in life we take and wonder if it going to be worth it in the end. Well, I invested in a personal trainer, which was the best investment I have ever made and it indeed changed my life.

Holly is an incredible trainer! She always kept me on my toes while challenging me every week. She provided the right amount of motivation for me to push myself just a little bit more and to go beyond what I thought I could do. Holly gave me a deeper understanding of how exercise and nutrition go hand and hand in order to get the results I wanted. It wasn’t about diets, but instead how to make little changes, which over time will become lifelong habits.

Today, I now live a healthier lifestyle. I put in the hard work and now I am reaping the benefits of a new, healthier, and more fit ME! With Holly’s help I am in better shape mentally and physically than at any other time in my life. Never would I have believed that I could achieve the success that I have. Along with working with a personal trainer, the Genoa Fitness Center offers many classes which helps with my cross training. The instructors are very experienced and put many hours into making it the best class they can, as well as making it fun. I especially love the spin classes!!

Holly’s knowledge, encouragement, and experience has inspired me to be the best person I can. She changed my life and has had a significant impact on the person I am today. I feel and look years younger and it’s all thanks to Holly and the staff at Genoa Fitness Center.

AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD CLASS / HORSEBACK RIDING LESSONS AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD CLASS

The American Red Cross Lifeguard class is designed to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries. Each participant that successfully completes the course will receive a certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid training. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training & First Aid certificates are valid for 2 years. CPR/AED certificates are valid for 2 years.

Prerequisite Swim Test: Swim 300 yards continuously. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with 2 hand on the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds, and tread water for 2 minutes with no hands.

HORSEBACK RIDING LESSONS

Riding lessons are offered in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

Learn safety rules, how to groom and tack a horse, basic horse science, and horse body language. Ride in a western saddle and learn a balanced way to ride. Marie Hoffman has been teaching riding lessons professionally for the past 42 years and is an expert in horse science. The farm features well trained SAFE horses and even an indoor arena with a heated viewing area. All riders must wear long pants and shoes or boots with heels. The weight limit for riders is #225 per the Humane Society.

KIDS KLUB and CATCH Kids Club • Early Release Wednesday After School Care

A safe and fun environment for your child(ren) to spend after school time with friends. We will homework time, activity time, provide a snack, play games, crafts and various other activities. Kids Klub provides a flexible schedule of activities and opportunities for all. We have “homework lists” for parents wanting their children to do their school work before play. Early releases are a part of this program. The program hours are dismissal time until 6:00 pm. Program is available to kindergarten thru 5th graders. Handbooks are available at the office and necessary forms must be completed prior to beginning the program.

EARLY RELEASE WEDNESDAY AFTER SCHOOL CARE Will you need care for your Kindergartner through 5th grader on Wednesdays? Be part of our Kid’s Klub program. School Bus Transportation, Howmework Time, Healthy Snacks, Play Time…. this is part of our CATCH activity program and there will be frun movement activities each week. The program is run at Genoa Elementary School with students from KES and DES being transported by school bus. The program will run from the release of school at 1:45 until 6:00 pm. Children should wear play clothes and bring a lunch and drink with them. A medical information form must be completed prior to attending. There is a minimum of 5 children per day needed to offer the program. We will let you know ahead of time if there will be a field trip as there is an extra fee associated with trips.

In October, I came to Brittany at the Fitness Center because I really wanted to tone up and get in better shape for my June wedding. I had worked out off and on in the past, but my exercise routines tended to go in streaks. I had trouble sticking with it and when I didn’t feel like working out, I wouldn’t push myself to do it.

Personal training at the Fitness Center proved to be exactly what I needed. Brittany was great to work with from Day 1. We sat down and discussed what my goals were and she gave me tips on how to make easy adjustments in my daily diet in order to be healthier and achieve better results. Over the course of the months of working with Brittany, she was always upbeat and positive. She motivated me and pushed me to work harder than I would have done on my own. I was surprised to see what I was actually capable of doing and I started to feel great, especially as I got stronger and my clothes got baggier! For me to be successful, I needed to have the accountability to show up at the gym regularly. By having the appointments with Brittany, I developed a routine that I got into the habit of doing each week. I looked forward to my sessions and it didn’t take long before I was actually enjoying working out, even on my own.

By the time my wedding rolled around, I felt great and confident in my wedding dress. I am in the best shape I’ve been in a long time and I have Brittany to thank for getting me hooked on a healthier lifestyle! ~ Sarah

The Kidz Zone is introducing a new program along with the Park District called CATCH. CATCH stands for Coordinated Approach To Child Health. It is a program that brings families, and communities together to work toward creating a healthy environment. This program is also designed to prevent sedentary behavior, poor dietary choices through changes at the school and community level. We help promote children’s behaviors including physical education, family reinforcement, and teaching healthy food choices. CATCH is research-based and proven to work. And, most importantly, CATCH makes nutrition learning and physical activity FUN! CATCH was the largest school-based health promotion study ever done in the United States. Our Kidz Zone staff has been trained to implement the CATCH program to its fullest benefit. Our Physical Education provides standard based physical education lessons to teach lifelong movement skills which blend both fun and fitness. We are excited to be offering this to our members. Expect to see a lot of informational and fun handouts to help keep your kids fit, moving, and eating healthy. We don’t want anything to stand in the way of our next generation having FUN and getting FIT! Our number one mission is to give the parents in our community the tools and resources to stay fit and live healthy lives. The Kidz Zone provides a fun and safe environment where our next generation has a place to learn about how fun physical activity can be & to learn about healthy, fun food choices and how food can FUEL your body to have more energy, & look and feel GREAT! WE WILL GUIDE OUR PRECIOUS KIDS ON A STRUCTURED JOURNEY. Our toddlers start off in Kidz Zone with lots of support, kindness, play units, games, and fun activities. When the kids turn 5 or 6, they can join us in our Young Chefs class where they learn to make healthy food choices, and also join us in our Kidz Fit & Fun & Hip Hop Class where they can stretch their wings with group fitness activity where they can have Fun, burn energy, and make their bodies healthier! Then at the age of 9 they are old enough to sign up with their family for a fitness center family membership and can graduate to the fitness floor with their parents to use the skills they have learned and learn some more!

We don’t just watch your kids as you exercise, we help to bridge the gap between you and your children’s fitness. Healthy eating and fitness habits start at an early age, our goal is to help and educate our community so they learn lifelong habits.

Kidz Zone - CATCH Kids Program

The Kidz Zone is introducing a new program along with the Park District called CATCH stands for Coordinated Approach To Child Health. It is a program that brings families, and communities together to work toward creating a healthy environment. This program is also designed to prevent sedentary behavior, poor dietary choices through changes at the school and community level. We help promote children’s behaviors including physical education, family reinforcement, and teaching healthy food choices. CATCH is research-based and proven to work. And, most importantly, CATCH makes nutrition learning and physical activity FUN! CATCH was the largest school-based health promotion study ever done in the United States. Our Kidz Zone staff has been trained to implement the CATCH program to its fullest benefit. Our Physical Education provides standard based physical education lessons to teach lifelong movement skills which blend both fun and fitness. SUCCESS STORY I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer on 11-1-2011.

I was 42 years old, with a 1 year old daughter and a 3 year old son. I endured 6 rounds of chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy, a serious infection, 37 radiation treatments, and in upwards of 30 surgical procedures within a matter of a year and a half. In the meantime I participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 2012 and 2013.

In July of 2013 I found out I was cancer FREE! I then had my last surgery in September of 2013 and things were finally looking up for me! On November 1st, 2013 I was cleared from my surgeon to start working out! After all I had gone through my body was so ragged and weak that even to move 5 pounds was often too much to handle. I was also at the highest weight I had ever been at 152 pounds. During all of this I was going through enormous personal stress, which compounded the issues.

I called up Brittany Tewksbury who became my personal trainer. She took great care knowing my fragile state and was very patient and careful with me, yet she always pushed me to do better! After my sessions with Brittany I was motivated and determined to be off and running on my own! I now work out 4x/week. I love to run on the treadmill and do the weight machines! I absolutely LOVE coming to the fitness center mostly because the staff is so awesome! They encourage me and cheer me on every step of the way, as do my friends that I see here. I have lost 12 pounds and 4 inches so far! The stress has literally melted away and mentally I am in a better place than I have felt in a long time. I feel strong and I am determined to go much farther with my fitness! My goal is to run some 5k’s this year!

I am also excited to walk farther in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer than ever!!

One of the best things about going to the Fitness Center is the Kidz Zone! I have 2 children and would not be able to get a babysitter each and every time I work out. My children LOVE to come to the Fitness Center! There are always activities they enjoy and the staff is wonderful with them! To me, it is beneficial to bring my children with me to the Fitness Center as I want to be a positive role model and teach them that physical activity is fun, that Mom takes care of herself and isn’t letting anything stand in the way of her dreams!

In life we always have a choice, to keep going around the same mountain over and over or get off the path that is taking you nowhere and create a new one. Look yourself in the mirror and say; “Enough is enough, I am better than this, I am worth more!” I can’t think of a better place to do that than The Genoa Fitness Center!

SUCCESS STORY

What motivated me to do the Meltdown at the Genoa Fitness Center?

My little sister, Alta. She had recently moved to Genoa from Rockford after the loss of her husband. Her first piece of mail left in her mailbox was the Genoa Park District mailer with the ad for the Meltdown. She was so excited that we had to check it out right away. We have always tried to be healthy and are always looking for new ways to achieve our goals.

Well, the Meltdown is as easy as the A, B, C’s. Allison, Brittany, Courtney, Deb, Holly, Kristi and all the other task masters that keep you on target. The classes are challenging with a little bit of fun thrown in. The Instructors are always encouraging and willing to help with modifications if needed.

Alta was so determined make her goal; she would go to the fitness center twice a day. One of the standout reasons is because of the awesome encouragement that everyone exudes from the moment you walk in the door until you leave. Alta was the ultimate point winner, but she challenged everyone to catch her and become healthier in the journey.

The positive experience at the Fitness Center empowered Alta to register and complete the Brett’s Run 5K by herself for the first time. She did it and now she has more confidence that anything is possible.

With her strong commitment to maintaining what she achieved during the Meltdown, she was the first climber to reach the top of the Summer Mount Everest Challenge in record time. She enjoys her time at the Fitness Center as great friendships have developed. Alta is looking forward to the next Meltdown Challenge. Game on!
