We are always creating new networking and promotional opportunities to help our member businesses succeed and grow, including space to advertise on the Chamber website, business referrals, monthly networking opportunities, and continuing education. Other great events that allow our member businesses to gain visibility include the Home and Business Expo, Annual Golf Outing, Great Genoa Duck Race, and Celebrate the Season. We continue to partner with local government and other organizations to pursue improvements in the overall quality of life for the city, county, and region, particularly in the areas of transportation, education, healthcare, tourism, economic development, community development, and workforce development. A stop on the

Stagecoach Trail By DANA HERRA

GENOA – The date the city of Genoa was founded is, honestly, a history mystery. There is some debate over whether the area’s first settlers really settled down in 1835 or 1836. At least three local history books – “The Past and Present of DeKalb County, Illinois,” published in 1907, “From Oxen to Jets,” published in 1963 and “The History of DeKalb County, Illinois,” published in 1868 – all say the city was founded in 1836, which is also the year the first post office opened there. But city father Thomas Madison appears to have settled in with his family a year earlier. Madison was a Revolutionary War veteran from Ohio, who named the settlement not after the city in Italy, but after a town in New York. Signs at the city’s gateways note that it was established in 1835. To be on the safe side, the city celebrated its 175th anniversary from the middle of 2010 through early 2011, covering both years. The Pacific House, an old stagecoach building, was one of the city’s first structures, and still stands at 501 W. Main St. Entries in a daybook from the city’s first store record sales as far back as 1843. Other early businesses included a distillery and a sawmill. According to the city’s website, Genoa was officially incorporated as a village in 1876 and as a city in 1911. Thanks to its stature as a stop on the stagecoach line from Chicago to Galena, and as a stop on not one, but two railroad lines, Genoa flourished in the mid- to late-19th century. In the late 1800s, the village had four lumber yards and more residents than Sycamore, DeKalb or Belvidere. The area’s history is preserved by the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society, which was formed in 1977. The society moved the old Milwaukee Road Depot, built in 1882, from its original location on North Sycamore Street to its present site on Park Avenue, where it serves today as a museum and history archive.

Santa Claus arrived in Genoa By DANA HERRA

GENOA – When Santa Claus arrived in Genoa in 2012, for the first time in years, it wasn’t behind a horse. “We decided to go back to a hometown tradition and have Santa welcomed into town on a firetruck,” Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce Director Kristie Mulso said. “He has arrived on a carriage the last few years. The G-K Fire Department is a great supporter of the chamber, and we think it’s important to go back to tradition.” A bonus to Santa riding in on a firetruck, Mulso said, is it frees up the horse and carriage to give nonstop rides for the entire three-hour Celebrate the Season event. Rides on the carriage are $1. Celebrate the Season also features a variety of fun family activities, many of them free. There is a petting zoo, face painting, crafts, games and vendors. After Santa arrives in the Jingle Bell Parade, he lights the community Christmas tree, then visits with children in his house on the vacant lot next to the Genoa Public Library. “We want everyone to be involved,” Mulso said. “This is probably the biggest community event we put on, and anybody and everybody is pretty much welcome.” Each child that visits Santa in his house throughout the season receives a free candy cane and coloring book provided by NB&T bank.

GENOA – Sometimes, local residents end up at Tobinson ’s Ace Hardware after they’ve exhausted the big-box options. “They’ll say, ‘I tried Menards, I tried Lowe’s, I tried everywhere, and it turns out you’ve got it right here,’” owner Carolyn Tobinson said. “You want to say, nicely, ‘Next time, try here to see if we have it first.’” Getting people to shop their hometown merchants first is the goal of Explore Genoa, a new committee within the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce. The committee is essentially a volunteer department within the chamber focused on getting people to shop locally. “The total focus is think local, shop local,” chamber director Kristie Mulso said. “This is about exploring Genoa.” The committee follows the lead of a larger shop-local movement. Several years ago, American Express started Small Business Saturday, urging people to shop locally-owned businesses the day after Black Friday. Communities across the country have embraced the 3/50 Project, which encourages people to spend $50 at three locally-owned businesses each month. The committee’s first project was the 12 Days of Christmas raffle in 2012. Winners were drawn daily for 12 days. Each day, $100 will be awarded. There were also two bonus days – on one, $250 was awarded and on the other, $500. Each winning ticket went back in the mix for another chance to win. The prizes were given out in the form of $20 gift certificates redeemable at businesses that belong to the chamber of commerce, Mulso said. “People might think they can’t spend that much in Genoa, but think about it,” she said. “You could go to Tobinson’s and put it toward a snowthrower. You could put it toward a new set of tires at Alan Browne’s. You could buy wine at the winery for holiday gifts. You could give $20 gift certificates as gifts for Christmas. Mulso gives a lot of credit for the success of the chamber and its initiatives to the Ambassador Club, made up of representatives from member businesses. The ambassadors volunteer their time and labor to make sure chamber events go smoothly. “We just want people to stop and think about shopping locally first,” she said.

That makes it the perfect time for the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo. The expo, scheduled this year for Saturday, March 9, is a giant indoor community event that gives locals a chance to get out of the house and also to explore the locally-owned businesses in the Genoa area. More than 670 people browsed more than 45 vendor booths at the 2012 expo. Of course, many people come for the prizes. Admission to the expo is free, as are tickets for the chamber raffle. Many vendors also have raffles, prizes and giveaways at their booths. In 2012, giveaways included a 50-inch plasma television, a Kindle Fire and a two-night stay at a spa resort. “Of course it’s free and we’re giving prizes away, but it’s also to see what’s in your community and surrounding communities,” chamber executive director Kristie Mulso said. “Who knows? You may come in for free prizes and end up with a new eye doctor or signed up for an art class.” The 2013 expo will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Genoa-Kingston High School, 980 Park Ave. in Genoa.

On your ducks, get set,

GENOA – The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce duck committee works hard preparing for the the annual Great Genoa Duck Race & Family Fun Event every September at Carroll Memorial Park. Chamber director Kristie Mulso said last year’s event was expanded to include a variety of games and activities, such as a moon bounce, a bags tournament, volleyball, face painting and an appearance by the Genoa-Kingston rescue dog. There also were 30 vendor booths, including three food vendors; a performance by the Genoa-Kingston High School band; a guitar player and a live radio broadcast. As in the past, Cogsley the Duck greeted youngsters and oversaw the release of the plastic ducks at noon. “I wanted everyone involved,” Mulso said. “It was a fun, family event.” As the chamber’s unofficial duck headquarters for many years, Tobinson Ace Hardware keeps up to 3,000 little plastic ducks in two large containers year-round. Besides the annual race, Cogsley the duck makes an appearance at both the Genoa Days parade and the Kirkland Fourth of July parade which is made possible in part by chamber Ambassador Jamie Ullmark of American Family Insurance. Ducks can be purchased at the chamber office, 327 W. Main St. in Genoa, or from chamber member businesses. Ducks are two for $5, 12 for $25 or a VIP flock of 50 for $100. The ducks are numbered, and buyers receive tickets with corresponding numbers. Once the ducks are released into the Kishwaukee River, “duck herders” make sure none of them get stuck, so every duck has an equal chance to win. In 2012, Mulso said the event was such an unprecedented success they ran out of tickets, and volunteers the day of the race were writing numbers on slips of paper to give to people buying lastminute ducks. The person whose duck finishes first wins $500. Second place is $250, third place is $100 and the last duck to finish is worth $50. Mulso said proceeds from the race help the chamber provide community activities.

GENOA – The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce has a whole new look online. The chamber’s website, genoaareachamber.com, received a makeover in 2012. “The goal,” chamber executive director Kristie Mulso said, “was to make the site more up-to-date, more modern and more user-friendly.” “We had a website, but it was not user friendly and it was not fully functional,” she said. “You’d click on something and it wasn’t there. In the new website, all the tabs, all the links work.” Chamber members can benefit from increased advertising opportunities on the new site, Mulso said. There is a functional calendar of events, and users can see the earliest upcoming events prominently featured on the home page. Tabs make it easy to buy chamber gift certificates, sign up for the chamber

newsletter or learn more about joining the chamber. Visitors to the site can also easily find the chamber’s photo gallery or link to its Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts. A “Member Deals” button links to a list of “hot deals” at chamber-member businesses. Chamber members can post to the site, Mulso said, but all postings go through the chamber for approval first. “A business directory sorts businesses both alphabetically and by category, making it easier to find the business you’re looking for,” Mulso said. There is also an “About Genoa” tab that offers information about the city, schools, parks and shopping. “The site is hosted by chamber member Armor Technologies”, Mulso said, “and was designed and developed by local marketing firm MorningStar Media Group, Ltd.”

Fitness Center The Genoa Fitness Center is about 14,000 square feet of state-of-the-art equipment and amenities. Parks Chamberlain Park This 15-acre park on East Second Street includes a soccer field, three softball fields, a skate park, tennis and basketball courts, shelters and several playgrounds. The public pool is located at Chamberlain Park. There are two separate pools: a wading pool of zero to 2 feet with a small slide for young children, and the main pool, which ranges from 3.5 to 9 feet deep. The main pool features a “drop zone” slide for older kids and adults and a flume slide. The pool is open from Memorial Day weekend until Genoa-Kingston schools resume the school year. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with evening hours of 7 to 9 p.m. weekdays, and 1 to 6 p.m. Sundays. Swimming classes, birthday parties and the Gator Swim Team for children 7 to 18 are all available. Call for more information. Durham Park This half-acre park is at the intersection of Route 72 and South Brown Street. Genoa Woods This 2.5-acre natural area is located on Oakview Lane. Lions Corner Park This 6-acre park at Madison and Walnut streets includes a playground, shelter, path, open recreation space, landscaping and benches. Riverbend Subdivision The subdivision has two tot lots and the 5-acre Central Park, as well as 40 acres of undeveloped open space.

Expansion plans continue Through a generous donation from the estate of Robert Weiss, Genoa Public Library is poised to expand from 3,000 square feet to 11,000 square feet. The $1.7 million donation put the library at more than 70 percent of its fundraising goal for the $3 million project.

The expansion would house book collections and the majority of library services in new construction, while the current building would be used as office space. Vision 20/20:

G-K schools look to the future By DOUG OLESON

GENOA – If you’re going to discuss the future of technology in your school district, why not get input from the students who have grown up with it and probably know as much about it as anyone? That’s what Phil Jerbi wondered. During the final meeting of the Vision 20/20 committee last year, Jerbi noticed a number of different groups were represented – teachers, administrators, community leaders, even college professors – but no one younger than 19. “It was kind of a natural fit,” he said. The committee was formed by Genoa-Kingston School Superintendent Joe Burgess in October of 2011. Its purpose, Burgess said, is to discuss “what we want the classrooms in Genoa-Kingston to look like in the year 2020. We want to move forward and integrate technology in our curriculum.” Among other things, Burgess said the committee is “talking about things that are out there that we don’t have yet that people have been successful with.” It has also visited other school districts that have implemented new technology, such as Geneseo and Marengo, to see how they’re operating. “We aren’t trying to change the curriculum, just the way the curriculum is presented,” Jerbi said. “By the year 2020, we want our schools to be among the most technical in the nation.” For the first meeting of the 2012-13 school year, Jerbi invited two of his advanced students, seniors Ray Puckett and Mike Brzoska, to sit in. Burgess, who had encouraged committee members to invite others to attend, called it an “unintended consequence. It was better than anything we could have planned.” After the meeting, the students were so enthusiastic, they asked to form a student Vision 20/20 subcommittee. The subcommittee consists of 20 students, five from each high school class. “This is a great way of getting our students involved in what we are doing,” Jerbi said. “I think they’re going to do great things. It’s another way to give our students ownership in their school and their community. It’s nothing but positive.” Jerbi said the students will discuss how they feel tech can be better utilized in the classroom. Aside from obvious subjects, he pointed out tech can be used in subjects like gym and history. The ultimate goal is to make it better for students to learn in the 21st century. “Kids don’t learn what they don’t want to learn,” Jerbi said. “We have to make if fun and interesting and tie it into their curriculum.” Which may be a little challenging for some teachers. “These kids have grown up with iPads in their hands,” Jerbi said. “We grew up with eight-tracks and vinyl. For us to teach with textbooks and chalk, it’s foreign to them. Kids don’t learn well out of textbooks. They have to get their hands dirty. These kids watch videos and then want to build something. Everything is eyes and hands. To teach kids with textbooks is stupid. It doesn’t work.” In 20 years of teaching, Jerbi said this is the most excited he’s been about the curriculum in a long time – another goal of the Vision 20/20 Committee. “There are some tough decisions,” Burgess said. “On the financial end of it, what do you want to spend your money on? Are you going to buy a $30 textbook or download a biology book that is interactive to the Internet that you can put on a tablet? The problem with technology is the day you buy something it becomes obsolete. So what machines are going to be the workhorses?” Burgess said he is “pleasantly surprised” by the progress the committee has made in its first year.
