GENOA’S VETERANS’ ORGANIZATIONS WEREN’T ALWAYS NEIGHBORS.
In fact, until 1959 Bayard Brown American Legion Post 337 and Genoa VFW Post 8387 each had their own separate meeting places. That year, the two groups – whose membership rolls of World War II and Korean War veterans largely overlapped – decided to build something together. According to Don Anderson, a local U.S. Marine Corps veteran who belongs to both organizations, the Genoa Veterans Home, 311 S. Washington St., was built

on donated land through the labor of the veterans themselves. A number of the members were tradesmen, said Anderson. By 1963, the clubs were meeting in the new building. In 1967, it was finished. Today, the Genoa Veterans Home – a separate entity from either the VFW or the Legion – is more than just a gathering place for veterans. It is a community hub, hosting everything from club meetings to fundraisers to weddings.
“Probably every organization in town uses this hall for meetings,” club manager Kat Carrier said. “It’s more like a community center than an old-school
VFW or American Legion.”
While the community benefits from public use of the space, Carrier said the clubs benefit as well. Membership in veterans organizations has declined nationwide in recent years, and many clubs have found it no longer makes sense to be the sole occupant of large halls. “It’s a matter of survival. We can’t be just one little club in a huge building,” Carrier said. “We don’t charge anyone to meet here, but it’s having people here using the bar, renting the hall, playing bingo, that sort of thing that keeps the club afloat.”

Though the club was built for veterans, it didn’t take long for the public to sit up and take notice. In the early 1970s, it started hosting a weekly fish fry that became a popular Friday night destination. The building had more space than city hall at the time, and local government meetings began taking place there. Other organizations followed suit. “Not only is the veterans home a great support home for our local veterans, they are a great asset to our community,” said Carolyn Tobinson, owner of Tobinson’s Ace Hardware. “The veterans home’s participation in and hosting of numerous local events is tremendous, and they are always giving back to our community.” The building is home base to numerous local clubs and nonprofit groups. Thanks to its kitchen and bar, it is a popular venue for private events like weddings and reunions as well as fundraising dinners. In a small community, the veterans home is also a dependable entertainment venue. There are regular game nights for cards and bingo, as well as themed dances, holiday parties, and tailgating parties. “It became a community center almost by accident,”
the veteran said. “As membership in the veterans’ organizations declined the public use increased.” Many of the groups who organize public events at the building are still connected to the U.S. military in some form, Anderson said. Besides the American Legion and VFW, there are companion organizations like the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary who also call the place home. And those groups have not forgotten the building’s roots or original purpose. Though all groups are welcome to use the veterans home, many events have a military flair, like the U.S. Marine Corps birthday party or the Army vs. Navy football game tailgate. Last Veterans Day, the building hosted a community celebration recognizing the 100th anniversary of the American Legion and the anniversary of the Bayard Brown post. “Just imagine what it was like 100 years ago. You had a lot of people involved,” Legion Commander Ray Gentilcore told the Daily Chronicle at the event. “We support other organizations, and we support the community out here, too.”

These are people with families who are working, and a working parent can’t get to the food pantry between 9 and 11 on a weekday

morning,” said Edwards, associate director of DeKalb County Community Gardens, which manages the Food Hub.
Gardens’ community partners leading classes as well, on topics from diabetes management to improving your credit score.
The Food Hub, in contrast, will be open once a week, including at least one weekend day and one evening a month. The bright downtown building is a single, accessible level and will be laid out supermarket style, so that clients can choose only the foods they will eat.
“We’ve had a lot of interest from local banks, who want to offer classes on things like money management,” she said. “One of the big components of DeKalb County Community Gardens is education. In order to lift someone up, education is very important. We don’t want to just hand people assistance; we want to teach them to fish for themselves.”
Accessibility, Edwards said, is a bonus for the many seniors who rely upon the food pantry to supplement their kitchens. “One gentleman told me someone always brings him his food and he was so excited he could go and pick it out himself,” Edwards said. In addition to the food pantry, the Food Hub is equipped with classroom space and a commercial kitchen. The Community Gardens will use the space to lead classes on gardening and healthy cooking using some of the produce it provides to the pantry. Edwards envisions the Community

There are plans for a monthly paywhat-you-can meal, Edwards said. Those who are able to donate more for their meal help to subsidize meals for those who can pay little or nothing. The Community Gardens also envisions a portion of the 2,000-square-foot downtown building offering a place for local farmers to sell goods like jams and local honey. While the food pantry is available only to residents of Genoa and Kingston, Edwards said, the educational and community events are open to anyone,
regardless of residence or financial situation. With so much going on, Edwards hopes it will remove any stigma people may feel about walking through the doors. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t say how proud I am to have this facility in Genoa,” Mayor Mark Vicary told the Daily Chronicle at an open house to kick off renovations. “We are often overshadowed by larger communities, but there’s so much good work going on in town.” Edwards said the support from the community has been incredible. About 80 people attended the preconstruction open house, and since then offers of time and donations have continued to pour in. The Knights of Columbus offered to provide coats collected in its coat drive. Because the new pantry is equipped with a refrigerator and freezer, it can offer perishable food, Edwards said. When a group at Crosswinds Community Church learned that, it offered to sponsor a supply of milk. The Food Hub itself is a direct result of

community support. Edwards said there were two committees in town working to address the accessibility issues of the old food pantry when she was approached by an anonymous donor who wanted to help. That donation kicked efforts to build a 21st century food pantry into high gear.

Each of the luxury condos will be 1,815 square feet with a three-car garage and a variety of amenities including brick exterior, granite countertops and large walk-in showers. Grainger has developed a similar retirement community on Bethany Road in Sycamore and is currently building out another Sycamore development on Route 23. He is able to develop the Genoa property for significantly less, he said, because the lots were partially developed before the housing bubble burst. “We were able to take the existing infrastructure that was laid for the singlefamily homes and repurpose that,” Grainger said. “The demand for singlefamily lots has been pretty low while the demand for high-end retirement condos is really high. This was an opportunity to take an area that was struggling to develop and develop it to really its highest, best purpose.” Genoa Administrative Director Alyssa Seguss said Riverbend’s completion has a host of benefits for the city. Deteriorating infrastructure is being replaced, a nearly decade-long legal battle with the previous developer is

being settled, and the city is being reimbursed for the time it has spent mowing and maintaining the vacant land. Grainger said Riverbend’s unique location – it is bordered by GenoaKingston High School, a county forest preserve, and city-owned property – creates a quiet atmosphere that is much appreciated by homebuyers, who tend to be retired or semi-retired. “One of our clients’ favorite things tends to be walking, and there are so many great walking paths right here,” Grainger said. “One day we were out working, and we saw a dad and his kids walking home, dragging a canoe. I asked where they got in the river and they told me there’s a point where you can enter the river and it just sort of loops around to the other side of Riverbend. It’s almost like the subdivision has its own built-in lazy river.”

They have all of the luxury features of the larger units, he said, and are designed to allow residents to age in place. “Our average customer is in their mid 60s, but at Somerset Farm [in Sycamore] I walked somebody through who was interested in buying and he was 100. He was asking good questions, too,”
Much of the interest in the age-restricted community has come from Genoa families, Grainger said. People whose adult children live in Riverbend have been attracted to the homes’ amenities and proximity to their children. “One challenge we usually have with new construction is you’re taking people

Grainger said. “We don’t really focus on making our homes ‘accessible’ as we do on what we call ‘universal design.’” The key to universal design, Grainger said, is making the structure accessible to everyone without giving the impression that it was designed for people with mobility issues. “The doorways are three feet wide. There are no steps coming in. The shower is a true walk-in, with nothing to step over,” he said. “But those are features anyone can enjoy. If you are somebody who doesn’t have difficulty getting around then you have a knee replacement, while you’re recovering suddenly you can’t do stairs or step into a tub. If you live in a home with universal design everything still works out.”

Like the Sycamore communities, the Riverbend condo community will be managed by an association of residents. Unlike the Sycamore locations, Genoa condo owners will have access to a clubhouse with a gathering area, a fitness center and an indoor pool. GIVING YOUTH AN INSIDE LOOK AT WORKING IN LAW ENFORCEMENT By: D.M. Herra

livia Saidat always thought she would like a career in law enforcement. After a few months of participating in the Genoa Police Department’s Police Explorer program, she was sure.
“I wanted to learn more about what the job is actually like out in the community,” she said. “I wanted to see what police officers do, and I can honestly say they should get a lot more respect for what they do.”
Olivia, 17, loves helping people. By the time she joined Explorers, she had already worked as a lifeguard and begun taking courses in criminal justice.
Exploring is a program with its roots in the Boy Scouts of America, though all posts are coed. Explorer posts are career-specific clubs for young people

ages 14 to 21 to delve into “immersive career experiences and mentorship provided by community and business leaders,” according to national website exploring.org. “It allows them to learn about the field of law enforcement and just explore the different aspects of it,” said Genoa Police Sgt. Chris Hathcoat, who oversees the local program.

The Genoa post began in the middle of 2019, when some teens were interested in joining the department’s police auxiliary program but were not yet the minimum age of 18. Hathcoat said several officers on the department offered to lead the program if he would supervise it. “We’re all learning,” he said. “This is a new experience for us, too. How far they take it really depends on [the teens]. There are competitions they can enter, but they have to do it as a team. If they all decide they want to do that, we’ll get them ready. If they decide they would rather keep it more informal, that’s what we’ll do.” Exploring posts coordinate with the national organization to give youth an enriching experience using the resources in their community. Posts can be developed around law enforcement, like the Genoa post, or around arts and humanities, aviation, business, communications, engineering and technology, fire safety, health care, law and government, science, skilled trades or social services. Scholarships are available for participants in aviation, fire safety, law enforcement and public safety exploring.

In the first few months of the program, the Explorers learned about typical police activities such as booking procedures, traffic control and assisting medical first responders. Though the activities are simulated, Hathcoat said he tried to give them a sense of what officers work with on a daily basis. For the traffic control exercise, for example, he set up a mock T intersection in a parking lot. While the Explorers directed traffic, officers took turns driving through. “We were giving them a hard time, saying things like, ‘But my house is over there,’ and ‘Let me through, I really need to go that way.’ One of them finally got really assertive and said, ‘No, you need to go where I’m directing you,’ and we were like, ‘Yes!’ You don’t realize it, but traffic control is one of the most assertive things police officers have to do.” Wyatt Strohacker, 18, said he was interested to learn just how many things a police officer does in a day. “It’s so much more than just pulling people over,” he said. “It’s interesting to learn how much they do out in the community and how involved they are.”
Law enforcement has developed an image problem in recent years, and enrollment in many criminal justice programs has dropped, Hathcoat said. He believes community-oriented programs like Exploring, which introduce youth to police officers as real people and shows them the real ins and outs of the job, may be one solution. “Those criminal justice programs at Kishwaukee Education Consortium and Kishwaukee College all feed from somewhere,” he said. “If you’re trying to get young people interested in the field, this is how you do it.” Explorers in Genoa’s program can earn privileges like riding along with on-duty officers, Hathcoat said.
