such as a rock wall, which could attract swimmers and bring economic activity to the village. Estimates from Isaac indicate the complex could generate up to $1 million a year for the village if the district selected the second option and $4.5 million if it chose the third. Issac’s investment projections for the three plans were $7.3 million, $11.4 million and $16.1 million, respectively. The complex would likely need to be funded at least partially by donations or a borrowing program, said district President Jay Kinzler. “We don’t have that kind of money sitting around in the bank,” said Vice President Gary Mayo. However, Isaac said a wellrun aquatic center could be profitable. He said cost estimates likely err high and include topof-the-line filtration systems, staffing, maintenance and marketing. Both the two larger options would be profitable, he said, with a projected surplus of $35,682 for the second option and $142,504 for the third. GLEN ELLYN – After months of survey and study, the Glen Ellyn Aquatic Initiative believes it has the numbers to show a new indoor pool in the village would be a beneficial – and profitable – undertaking. The volunteer organization hired consultant Isaac Sports Group to assess the feasibility of creating the indoor complex after raising more than $20,000 in donations to fund the study in July 2013. Group President Stu Isaac presented the findings March 26 to a crowd of more than 50 members of the public at the Main Street Recreation Center, and said the complex could serve as a beacon for Glen Ellyn. Consultants showed three plans, all of which include an addition to the north side of Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center and are projected to cost several million dollars. Isaac said an August 2012 survey showed households viewed adult fitness programs, swimming opportunities and learn-to-swim programs as top community parks and recreation needs. Italian ice cart’s plan to sell causes concern for trustees GLEN ELLYN – An Italian ice cart hoping to set up shop in the village was the source of much discussion at a March 24 meeting of the Glen Ellyn Village Board of Trustees. Three local families have plans to establish a Sunset Slush cart, which would operate May 15 to Sept. 15, in front of Citibank, 444 N. Main St, and requested the board grant them a license agreement, according to village documents. “We’re excited about bringing it out here,” owner Erik Anderson said. “The consistent feedback has been that downtown Glen Ellyn could really use a dessert option in the summer.” However, trustees voiced concern about the potential for carts to take business from

brick-and-mortar shops and opted to unanimously table the matter. Because his wife owns a restaurant in town, President Alex Demos recused himself from the conversation. Trustee Dean Clark was not in attendance. “We’ve tried for many years to fill storefronts,” said trustee Pete Ladesic. “We’ve

got people that are paying gross income taxes for a piece of property, they’ve invested money in that building, they’re paying retail sales taxes as well and they’ve got a lot more overhead.” Glen Ellyn has no regulations for carts, although it does have restrictions for peddlers and itinerant merchants, according to Planning and Development Director Staci Hulseberg. The board previously hasn’t discussed regulating carts, she said, nor has Glen Ellyn seen much demand for them in the past. The village has authorized cart agreements since 1995, documents said. A hot dog vendor has operated in Glen Ellyn for the past 17 years and a gelato cart sold treats in 2009. Trustee Jim Burket expressed interest in possibly

Anderson said he and his partners envision expanding to nearby communities and opening a storefront in Glen Ellyn. Sunset Slush is a brand based in the southeastern United States, documents said. Anderson would be its first operator in Illinois. “I’m not trying to derail you by any stretch of the imagination,” said trustee Tim Elliott. “But I share precisely the concerns that trustee Burket and trustee Ladesic raised.” Ladesic addressed the need to determine how to regulate an increase in vendors. Trustees also directed village administration not to approve the licensing agreement for the hot dog cart until further discussion. The board will return to the issue during its meeting Monday.

limiting the number of carts allowed by the village. If the board votes to license Sunset Slush, the agreement will be administratively approved in future years, according to documents. The business has a deal with Olive ‘n Vinnie’s, 449 Main St., to sublet overnight storage space to house carts and inventory, documents said. Carts in neighboring downtowns are becoming increasingly common, according to documents, with communities charging fees of $44 to $500. If an agreement with Sunset Slush is approved, the village would require $50 per year, plus a $100 one-time fee, as well as sales tax. The cart has the potential to increase pedestrian traffic downtown and create a local destination, documents said.

Lewek photo studio celebrates 35 years By ANNA SCHIER

The owner of Lewek Photography and Frame Studio, 507 Pennsylvania Ave., is celebrating his 35th year in business and refers to his Glen Ellyn storefront as a second home. “The only thing I’m missing in the back is a cot,” he said. Lewek’s love of photography was established decades ago, when the Wheaton-Carol Stream native took a high school job in the photo department at Montgomery Ward of Yorktown Center. That position led to Lewek being hired as a clerk at Yorktown Camera in 1967. It was there, he said, that he received his industry training, learning about business, sales, customer service, photo equipment, camera accessories and darkroom work. “I just pretty much taught

“The community’s been fabulous,” he said. “They appreciate this type of service and product.” Lewek, a Lombard resident, has been a member of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce since opening his studio three and a half decades ago. He is also a 25-year member of the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn and has previously served as president of both organizations. “Al is one of those lovely, giving guys,” said chamber co-executive director Georgia Koch. Lewek offers family and business portraits, digital printing and retouching, event pho-

tography, vintage restoration, passport pictures and framing. He no longer works weddings, although he estimates he’s photographed close to 3,000 throughout his career, nor does he take children’s portraits. Lewek said he’s seen the industry change. With the shifting emphasis on digital images, people rarely open photo and framing studios today. “It’s important to balance the new with the old,” said Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn Executive Director Carol White. “I think that’s what Al does for us.” Despite a decline in business during the recession, Lewek said demand has grown in recent years. “It’s been a nice ride so far,” he said. He plans to keep up the business for another five or 10 years, before selling or closing it to retire. “I’d like to hit the 40 years mark,” he said, “just to say I did it.”

Approximately 3.4 million Americans have been diagnosed with dementia and the number is expected to double by 2025. Physicians commonly use the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) to diagnose dementia. Since less than a quarter of those who have hearing loss seek treatment, many patients seeking treatment for dementia have untreated hearing loss. It has been suggested that the loss of audibility from hearing loss efects scores on the MMSE. Hearing loss is more than twice as common in adults with diabetes as those who do not have the disease. Diabetes oten accelerates hearing

loss especially if blood-glucose levels are not controlled. Diabetes afects the body’s organs including the cochlea, the organ of hearing located in the inner ear. Diabetic patients and those at-risk for developing diabetes should have their hearing tested on an annual basis. Smoking has been found to contribute to hearing loss. Secondhand smoke exposure is especially detrimental for children and adults. Research indicates that smokers were up to 2 times as likely to have a hearing loss as nonsmokers (Cruickshanks et al., 1998). he issue that is likely to afect the hearing from smoking may be related to tissue hypoxia (lack of oxygen). Nicotine and carbon monoxide may actually deplete oxygen levels in the cochlea. he cochlea is highly vasularized illed with electrolytic luids. If oxygen is depleted, tissue damage can occur. Hearing evaluations can also detect a possible underlying medical condition that otherwise may go unnoticed. Individuals with any of the above risk factors should have their hearing tested annually.

With less than two Roskam weeks until your tax returns are due, make sure you know about these helpful programs as you file. For individuals who make $58,000 or less, the Free File Program provides free access to online tax preparation through some of the most well-known tax software companies like TurboTax and HR Block. Over 100 million taxpayers are eligible to benefit from this service which is why I introduced legislation to make the Free File Program permanent. It is a win-win for everyone – taxpayers have already saved a total of $1.1 billion since the program’s start in 2003 while costing the federal government nothing. There are also programs that provide in-person help to Americans that qualify. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program sets up free tax return preparation between certified volunteers and taxpayers making $52,000 or less. Working with one of these professionals can help individuals navigate the tax code, and potentially save hundreds of dollars in the process. For taxpayers 60 years old or older, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Program provides a similar service to VITA, matching qualified volunteers who are experts in pension and retirement issues with older Americans. VITA and TCE sites can be found all over the Sixth District – from Naperville to Barrington – and can also be found by calling 800-906-9887 and 888-227-7669, respectively. April 15 is less than two weeks away, so make sure you’re prepared. Take time to double-check all the paperwork before singing anything. And don’t forget to file your return – in 2010 alone, the IRS reported a shocking $760 million in unclaimed refunds. For people who feel they cannot file by the deadline, request a filing extension to avoid fines. About 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, I heard water running (sounded like Niagara Falls). In our bathroom, hot water and steam were shooting out from under the sink. My husband, being in a wheelchair, could not help. Our son’s phone was not on at that time. I called 911 and was transferred to the fire department. On the telephone, they made sure there were no electrical outlets by the floor so we would not be electrocuted. Within minutes, three firefighters were coming up my driveway. They assessed the situation and took care of the problem for us. What a great comfort it is to know whatever the emergency is, our Glen Ellyn Fire Department is there to help. I am so grateful, and I want to say “thank you” from the bottom of my heart.

Regulations for collection include: • A $2.40 green yard waste sticker must be placed on each container. • Yard waste must be in brown paper bags or unlined 33-gallon trash containers. • Branches or brush must be bagged, bundled or placed in a container. • Branches must be no larger than 5 inches wide, 4 feet long and weigh 50 pounds. • Waste must be at the curb by 7 a.m. Monday.

Mago conjures lively setting for Mexican dining BOLINGBROOK – When dining out, sometimes it’s nice to get hit with some degree of spectacle – bright colors, live music and big tastes. For those times, Mago Grill & Cantina in Bolingbrook is a fine place to indulge in elevated Mexican fare. The decor hits you like a hot pepper. The walls are painted in bright purple and orange, with the restaurant’s name in giant, pop-art letters adorning one side. Rows of luchador masks line the back walls. Another wall shows off row upon row of various tequilas and spirits, all in colorful displays. A live mariachi band began playing among patrons as my date and I left – and the table they were singing to seemed delighted. The meal started like many do at Mexican restaurants, with chips and salsa. Mago, however, upped the ante with warm chips and a trio of three brightly colored and wonderfully fresh and flavorful salsas. The cilantro-based one was a personal favorite. We followed with a ceviche tasting, featuring a citrusy shrimp, lime and cilantro tilapia, and scallop chile. Much like their salsa predecessors, all three were highly distinctive. The scallop, in particular, was well-cooked and deftly balanced with some vinegar acidity. The shrimp dish included olive tidbits, adding a layer of complexity and welcome contrast with the other two. And the main events – the chicken mole and the beef and cheese chile rellenos – both deeply impressed. I noticed that Mago devoted an entire page of the menu to five different types of mole sauces and their eight meat

Thankfully, that time and dedication were evident in the flavor. The mole ranchero, featuring chile ancho, chile pasilla and pumpkin seeds, was very straightforward, but had a ring of authentic smokiness that screamed care and love. And simply put, the rellenos were some of the best I have ever had. Both the cheese and beef versions were perfectly breaded and fried, with nary a bit of batter coming off the peppers as you ate them. But the true test was my date, who is a connoisseur of the stuff. She, too, gave them the stamp of approval – they managed to have strong flavors without overpowering any one ingredient. The beef was well-seasoned and stood its own under delicious heaps of sauce, while the cheese had just enough body to remain intact yet perfectly melted.
