GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage is under fire after a media investigation detailed the college’s former radio station engineer’s criminal history.

WDCB Public Radio’s engineer had previously been convicted of theft for crimes he committed while employed in a similar role at Elmhurst College, according to the report.

Elmhurst officials contacted the College of DuPage about the theft investigation, the report stated, but the

College of DuPage continued his employment.

In a statement released Jan. 15, the college denied that anyone from Elmhurst College contacted College of DuPage officials.

“Our investigation has so far showed that we have no record of any communication from Elmhurst Campus Security regarding this former employee, nor have we recollection of anyone contacting us,” College of DuPage Police Chief Joe Mullin said in the statement.

In the college’s statement, President Robert Breuder recommended to the Board of Trustees chairwoman that they hire an independent investigator to examine the facts of the communication process with Elmhurst College.

The College of DuPage announced in October it had received information about a possible fraud case at WDCB in December 2013 but did not release any additional information about that case, citing it as a pending investigation that could result in legal proceedings.

For bigger events, such as a tree falling in the road or an emergency situation, Buckley said residents should call the department directly or call 911.

When a report is submitted through YourGOV, a department crew member is emailed about the issue. Someone is then assigned to go to the scene and resolve it.

Buckley said issues can be expected to be resolved within two to five days of each report.

“We’re excited about it. We think it’s a great tool for people to use,” he said.

The app makes it easy for users to communicate the specifics of the problem to the department, which Buckley said can be a challenge when residents call in.

Through the app, users can take a picture of the issue and submit it with their complaint.

Buckley said the app has a GPS feature that will locate the exact position of the report if the app is used at the site of the issue. The location can be changed in the app as needed.

Recent issues The college has been in the spotlight during the past six months, starting with an email that leaked in July. The email was from College President Robert Breuder to board trustees and addressed freeing up $20 million the state set aside for building demolition at the school.

In the email, Breuder suggested finding options that would be “politically attractive” to the governor’s office, such as constructing a teaching and learning center with the money.

The governor’s office responded to the leaked email by saying it would not provide the $20 million.

One question focused on why the college asked legislators for relief from FOIA requests. Collins said the college received 150 FOIA requests in the past 12 months, which resulted in $100,000 in legal fees and lost productivity. Those numbers didn’t faze Alvarez.

“This is a large community. This is the public’s information,” she said to Collins.

Alvarez also said the $100,000 shouldn’t be a source of concern.

“That’s the cost of doing the public’s business,” she said.

Certain questions posed during the evening presented numbers Collins disagreed with or thought were misleading.

“This is what’s frustrating about answering these questions,” he said, calling many of the numbers used in reference to college finances “erroneous.”

In October, watchdog group For The Good of Illinois claimed the college was hiding $95 million from trustees using imprest payments, which are less than $15,000 and do not require board review.

A recent audit by Crowe Horwath LLP gave the college a clean bill of financial health. The board voted unanimously not to audit the imprest payments.

In December, the board voted to approve an audit of the college radio station, despite the school’s previous acknowledgement of the potential that fraud had taken place there a year earlier.

A question at the forum was brought up about recent allegations that the college knew its former radio engineer had been convicted of theft while working at Elmhurst College. McGuire simply read a statement from College of DuPage denying any communication with Elmhurst College about that former employee.

WHEATON – College of DuPage representatives answered questions from the public about recent events at the school during a forum Jan. 15 at the Wheaton Park District Community Center.

Questions during the two-hour forum, which was organized by the League of Women Voters of Wheaton and attended by about 80 community members, focused on items such as transparency and financial concerns.

There were five panel members for the forum: board Trustee Dianne McGuire, college Executive Vice President Joseph Collins, faculty senate President Glenn Hansen, Student Leadership Council President Stephanie Torres and Citizen Advocacy Center attorney Andrea Alvarez. The center is a nonpartisan nonprofit that focuses primarily on open meeting laws and Freedom of Information Act requests.

Several questions addressed Waterleaf Restaurant and its finances since opening.

“The Waterleaf has lost money,” Collins said, estimating a loss of about $500,000 in recent years.

Collins said the restaurant appears to be rebounding and that the college will revisit the situation again in a few years.

Additional questions arose about Waterleaf’s annual losses, which Collins brushed aside.

“Nobody asked about other programs that lose money,” he said, citing the McAninch Arts Center. “That doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t have them. They have value.”

Crawfordville’s a really unique place because it has five small museums in town. And one of the most unique there is the Rotary Jail Museum. It was a design that was developed in the 1880s to have a round, revolving cellblock. It rotates with a hand crank.

And so that’s one of the properties that the cultural foundation manages. So I ran the museum and also the Tannenbaum Cultural Center there. They were both on their property. It was like here, you have multiple buildings that are part of the property. I was there for almost three years and then came here.

It’s important to remember that as hearing ability declines, corrective means are necessary not only to improve hearing but to also preserve the brain.

People who elect to correct their hearing typically are happier, more socially connected, have more earning power and are healthier than their counterparts that don’t correct their hearing.

An Audiologist can assess the hearing to determine if corrective means are necessary and will beneit the patient.

Midway through the school year, teachers and school officials are reporting creative lesson planning and minimal issues with the iPads.

Pets are part of the family Kudos to the person who wrote that “reminder” to keep pets inside. If you have a pet, it is indeed a “member of the family” and should be treated as such. At the very least, they should be treated right. This means they live inside, have proper food and vet care.

They should be housed inside during hot weather as well as cold weather and rainy weather. In other words, they need to live inside just as their “pawrents” do. People who cannot or won’t do this should not have pets.

This section of the village is about oneeighth the size of the total. Ridiculous.

Ridiculous complaints It never ceases to amaze me of the stupidity of some people, especially some of those in the Sound Off section of the Suburban Life. One person complained about plowing of streets and snow left on his driveway. He said the village should come up with a solution to this. Do you have any ideas? I’ll bet not. Another complaint was about getting on Ogden Avenue from the Burlington area. The advice was to install a traffic signal. What kind of a signal, to do what and where? In many cases, traffic control signals do not help but add to problems. Look at the Forest Hills section of Western Springs. There is a total of more than 95 stop signs there – all installed at the insistence of residents.

Technology not required A few years ago, The New York Times had an article reporting that most of the schools in the Silicon Valley area did not allow any electronic devices in the classroom and encouraged the parents not to let their children to use them at home.

The students actually learned how to add, subtract, multiply, etc., and use their brain and memory. When educated and it was needed, the students could learn how to use a calculator or computer in a few hours or less. If this were true here you might be able to find a young checkout server in a store that could actually make change without using the cash register.

I’d like to respond to the overpass/ underpass in Glen Ellyn. I think an overpass/underpass is more important than a pool situation that was going here. Also an underpass from the train station from the north side to the south side is also very important. I think it could save lives in the future.

A panel of experts will provide their insights during the Economic Forecast 2015 event that will be hosted by Suburban Life on Tuesday at Drury Lane Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace.

Panelists slated for the event are Anthony Griffin, executive director of Berwyn Development Corp.; Heath Ashenfelter, division vice president, True Value Company Chicago; Timothy H. Ricordati, dean of the School for Professional Studies, Elmhurst College; Richard W. from Michigan State University. And then I worked at universities in the Midwest: Michigan State University; Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio; Miami University in Oxford, Ohio; Purdue University at West Lafayette; and then went to Crawfordsville.

This organization started in 1969 and we still have some of the original members here. And some of the original volunteers. And so you have people with an incredible wealth of knowledge about the history of Glen Ellyn and this region. And a lot of my job right now is to learn from them.

Shields: Are there any big plans that you had in mind when you took this job?

Hall: It doesn’t really work that way with this organization. This is a member-driven, volunteer-driven organization. So part of my job is to enhance their work. So it’s very different than, say, a for-profit corporation because our volunteers are really the heart of this organization. Our volunteers are members.

Shields: So have you had a chance to get a feel for everything?

Hall: No. Very steep learning curve at the beginning. There is with any job.

I can honestly say, though, the people here have just been wonderful. I mean everyone I’ve met has been very warm and welcoming. And I feel like I have lots of support and assistance.

your tenure here, but how does this position compare to the one you had in Crawfordsville?

Hall: First of all, I think every nonprofit has a unique character to it. This one is different because of the number of active volunteers and members. We have over 40 volunteers that contribute their time here on a weekly basis. And we have many more that come in monthly or as needed for special events or special programs. So there’s really a huge volunteer base here. And while you have lots of volunteers in many organizations, to have the longevity of volunteer commitment that you do here, and the depth of commitment, is something unique to this organization.

The issue, CUSIP number 3137EADU0, was priced at 99.825 to yield 0.587%, or 11.5 basis points more than two-year U.S. Treasury Notes. The issue will settle on Friday, January 16, 2015.

The new two-year Reference Notes security was offered via a syndicate of dealers headed by Barclays Capital, J.P. Morgan Chase and Nomura Securities, International, Inc. An application was made to list the issue on the Euro MTF market of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.

GLEN ELLYN – Battling injury, Tim Marks hasn’t had the opportunity to be on the court much this winter.

But when the Glenbard South junior got his chance in the later stages of Tuesday’s Metro Suburban conference crossover game against Timothy Christian, he certainly delivered.

Tying the score on a basket with less than 30 seconds left in regulation, Marks went on to record six points and six rebounds in overtime as the Raiders prevailed 60-52.

“I just tried to stay really focused and not let the pressure get to me,” Marks said. “Historically we’ve had a lot of close games with this team and I thought we stayed really composed.

I thought we executed pretty well and hit some big shots.”

Helped by a 16-7 second quarter run and eight points from Povilas Riauba, the home team was able to grab control and a 32-22 lead at halftime. But the Trojans clawed their way back, slicing the margin to three by the end of the third quarter before taking a 48-46 lead with 1:02 remaining in the game.

A short-range basket by Marks knotted the score at 48 apiece and Timothy Christian then missed a pair of shots in the closing seconds.

In the extra session, a three-point play by Marks off an offensive rebound with 59.9 seconds left was the big blow.

“That three-point play in overtime was huge,” Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke said. “In overtime, he had six rebounds and he knocked down some big free throws for us. He came up big.”

The win was the Raiders’ first close one of the season, their previous five victories all came by double digits while the team has lost six games by

“It’s been a process all season long,” Hardtke said. “We keep talking about it and we keep working on it. Just staying confident and staying in attack mode and playing to win instead of playing not to lose. In the fourth quarter, I kind of saw it coming again but we were at least able to get it into overtime. And in overtime, we were able to gain our composure again and get control of the game.”

Glenbard South, which was coming off a league victory over Aurora Central Catholic on Jan. 16, was playing without two starters in Billy Bair and Charlie Bair.

“We had some guys step up huge,” Hardtke said. “We talked about it before the game that being down two starters was an opportunity for somebody to step up and do something good. And I thought a lot of guys did that.”

The Hilltoppers lost to conference-leading Hinsdale Central 60-52 Friday and a day later dropped an overtime game to Lyons Township 62-58.

The loss to LT was especially deflating considering the Hilltoppers led by 21 points in the middle of the third quarter before a full-court press helped bring the Lions back into the game. West made just one of five free throws and was outscored 18-5 in the fourth quarter.

“I can’t believe that we didn’t win,” Glenbard West head coach Tim Hoder said. “We didn’t shoot free throws down the stretch, that hurt us. We gave up some offensive rebounds. We had a couple key turnovers. They obviously hit some big shots. They were aggressive offensively and that’s how it happens.”

Justin Pierce led West with 20 points and Aidan Gould scored 16. Kalen Starkey finished with eight points and 12 rebounds.

Against Hinsdale Central, Passi led three Hilltoppers in double figures with 16 points. Pierce scored 13 and Starkey added 12.

The tests those two teams provided gave West a measuring stick, but it’s one they ultimately didn’t quite live up to.

Gould has been one of the emerging players on the team.

“I thought we shared the ball better,” Hoder said. “Aidan shot the ball well [Saturday] and I think we had a little more balanced scoring. I think if Aidan can make shots like he did [Saturday] that will be important for us down the stretch. We just got to play a complete game and finish one.”
