DIXON – According to members of Dixon VFW Post 540, over the past 10 years, one in four VFWs has shuttered their doors every year. For people like Dixon Post Senior Vice Cmdr. Paul Spangler, it’s disheartening. At 43, he has a 21-year career in the Army under his belt, two tours in Iraq, another in Afghanistan and

another 7 years overseas. Having spent years in and around the military, Spangler knows the importance the VFW can play. “VFWs are closing all over the U.S.,” he said. “I’m involved in [the VFW] for what it represents. [It’s] for World War II, Vietnam and Korean War vets who may not be as fortunate as I am. They come here seeking help.” VFW CONTINUED ON A14

STERLING – The Rock River Open Forum is a good old-fashioned example of democracy in action, a grassroots movement that’s grown from being a voice for peace to one that’s become a voice for many issues. Those roots were planted in the 1990s when the group

course of the war, the group rallied locally, and decided to take their concerns to the streets. Today, they’re still taking it to the streets – but they’re also taking it to meeting rooms, where they gather to discuss issues near and far, be it social justice or community gardens.
