Clothing store plans fall opening Donald’s Sweets & Treats will open on Saturday BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
STERLING – Glik’s, a new clothing retailer, plans to move into an empty space next to Maurice’s in Northland Mall in mid-October. Mall owner J. Herzog & Sons has some history with the men’s and women’s clothing company. “We have had Glik’s at a couple of our other malls, and they know we are a good landlord,” said Karyn Broui-
lette, Northland’s general manager. Glik’s is a family business that traces its history back to 1897, making it the 14th-oldest retailer in the country. Brands include The North Face, Silver Jeans, Billabong, Hurley, Roxy, Fox, Under Armour, and Miss Me. Founded in St. Louis, the company
has corporate headquarters in Granite City and more than 90 stores in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Another new business also is getting ready to open at the mall. Donald’s Sweets & Treats plans to make its debut Saturday. It will sell candy, popcorn and the like. It’s owned by Donald Czyzyk, owner of Muddy Paws pet complex in Sterling, and the site administrator at Happy Tails Humane Society in Rock Falls.
Are you a good fit for the job? Glik’s will have open interviews for positions at the Northland Mall, 2900 E. Lincolnway. A company representative will be there from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Sierra Cassidy (left) and Victoria Dingman of Sterling, members of Giving Power to Adolescents, make signs for the Fiesta Day Parade, which will make its way through the downtowns in Sterling and Rock Falls on Sept. 12. GPA is striving to have a larger footprint in the community. Search for Giving Power to Adolescents on Facebook to find out more about the community group. The Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce is still looking for residents of the Silver City boxcar community in the 1940s and ’50s to serve as grand marshals in the parade. Call Executive Director Kris Noble at 815-625-2400 with suggestions. Former residents of Silver City and the Wallace Street neighborhood are also encouraged to attend the Wallace Street reunion at noon Sunday at Heide Shelter in Centennial Park in Rock Falls. Read more about that event, and an upcoming series of stories in the “People’s Voice” column, Saturday in the SV Weekend edition.
DIXON – A book kiosk, where park users can pick up and drop off used books, is coming to John Dixon Park within the month. Dixon resident Roberta Berwanger, who came up with the idea, will donate the kiosk. The Park District is willing to give the lending library a try, on the condition its doesn’t prove too problematic, board members said at Wednesday’s meeting. At first, Chairman Ron Pritchard and board members Shane Miller and Steve Pritchard were concerned about extra work for park staff, should the kiosk be vandalized. KIOSK CONTINUED ON A5
