Teen charged with felony 16-year-old faces reckless conduct in death of best friend BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521
STERLING – The tall, thin, brown-haired boy stared down at the table as the charge
against him was read: felony reckless conduct. Brady Osborne, 16 – dressed in blue and surrounded by his parents and grandparents – sat Monday in Whiteside County
Court opposite the family of the boy he is accused of accidentally killing, his best friend. Matt Anderson, 15, died nearly 6 months ago, on March 1, killed by a gunshot wound to his chest.
Prosecutors say Osborne, the son of Illinois State Police trooper Troy Osborne, caused great bodily harm to Anderson after he picked up a loaded Glock handgun to show him,

Thousands without power Systems part of growing network
Brief, violent front downs trees, blocks streets in twin cities BY JERMAINE PIGEE jpigee@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525
STERLING – Area residents started Monday battling extreme, above-average temperatures. By mid-afternoon, there were power outages, downed power lines and trees blocking various roads in the twin cities. Paul Callighan, a spokesperson with ComEd, said 9,000 customers in Whiteside County were without power as a result of the storm. Another 1,400 customers are without power in Lee County. “We are currently assessing the damage and getting information from the field,” Callighan said. “At this time, we have no definitive restoration times. We will work throughout the night and into [today] to make repairs.” About 10:30 p.m. Monday, Callighan said about 5,000 customers still were without power in Whiteside and Lee counties. There was a downed power line right outside a house on 15th Street near Lincoln Elementary School in Sterling where Martin Cossman and his girlfriend, Debra Rodriguez, live. To make matters worse, there also was a large tree down in front of their place. “ComEd has been contacted about the power lines, but we have power,” Cossman said. “Other than the tree and downed power line, we are good.” Cossman also said he was watching the storm when he saw a transformer blow nearby.
LOTS made 20,535 trips in 3-month period BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529
DIXON – A Greyhound Lines pilot program could be up and running in March, bringing service between the Quad Cities to Chicago, with stops in Dixon and other smaller cities along the way. And when it is, current public transportation systems like LeeOgle Transportation System or Whiteside County Public Transportation will be able to expand the public transportation network, connecting Sauk Valley residents to larger urban areas with consistent options. But the current county public transportation systems have been in use for a while, and play an important role for some residents, providing transportation to doctor’s appointments, to work or to school. A tree fell onto a house in the 600 block of Broadway Avenue in Sterling during a storm Monday afternoon. The tree broke windows on the second floor and knocked a hole into the kitchen of the house. Shortly after the storm, ComEd officials said 9,000 customers in Whiteside County and 1,400 more in Lee County were without power.
See a pattern forming? Thunderstorms are in the forecast for not only today, but for the next 5 days. As for the present, Sauk Valley residents can expect a high of 85 and a low of 62 today. It will be sunny at times, but humidity will again hover near 100 percent.
