Quinn, Rauner focus on values Candidates zero on families during Sunday’s stops BY DON BABWIN The Associated Press

CHICAGO – With months to go before the November election, both candidates in the Illinois governor’s race spoke Sunday about helping families. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn attended Chicago’s gay pride parade, trying to capitalize on his opponent’s comments about same-sex marriage, while Republican challenger Bruce Rauner spoke at a Mexican restaurant, trying to convince a group that traditionally votes for Democrats that he’s the candidate who shares their values. Quinn spoke of how families “in Illinois deserve the opportunity to come together,” while Rauner told a Hispanic audience that he wants to help make it easier to provide for their families.

The 2-day event – more races took place Sunday – made its return after being on hiatus for about 7 years, and both days of races were free to the public. Matt Balser, in the 999V boat, rounds the final turn on the course and heads for the finish line Saturday during a River Chase boat race on the Rock River in Rock Falls. Running in conjunction with the event was the annual Summer Splash celebration. If you didn’t make it, see page A2 to find out the exotic fare you missed out on.
