Paying our past dues State has paid nearly a billion dollars in late fees since 2014 SPRINGFIELD (AP) – Illinois has spent more than $900 million on late-payment penalties over the past 6 years because of the state’s inability to pay its bills on time, according to Figures from Comptroller Leslie Munger’s office.

About $160 million was paid out in the

2014 fiscal year.

That’s the same amount that Gov. Bruce Rauner wants to remove from dedicated state funds to help the state’s universities through the rest of the current fiscal year, The Springfield State Journal-Register reported.

The figures from Munger’s office don’t include any outlays for the current fiscal year in which the state has been operating without a budget since July 1.

DIXON – There are a lot of reasons for 18-year-old Dustin Wolber to get a little too fired up before demolition derbies.

After winning his first derby at

age 13, he won in four of five attempts last year, and he’s well aware his competitors are targeting him.

The key to his continued success, however, is to remain as cool as possible.

STERLING – A 22-year-old Rock Falls man was in Whiteside County Jail on Sunday evening on an armed violence charge after a shooting Saturday morning in area of 16th Avenue and East 19th Street.

Jesse A. Williams was arrested Sunday afternoon and booked at the jail about 7 p.m. Sunday. He has a hearing at 1 p.m. Monday.

At 3:14 a.m. Saturday, Sterling Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 16th Avenue and East 19th Street, where a 23-year-old Rock Falls man was found with a gunshot to his arm.

Officers also found several homes that Jesse A. were struck Williams by bullets.

After conducting an investigation along with the State Police Crime Scene division, police issued an arrest warrant for Williams.

The victim was treated at CGH Medical Center and released.

Armed violence is a felony punishable by 30 to 60 years in prison.

Williams also was arrested in December 2013, for unlawful possession of a firearm, a misdemeanor. He was found guilty March 12, 2014, and received a 30-day sentence in Whiteside County Jail.

The concept places an emphasis on promoting local art, education and gardening by combining them in a gallery-like setting.

The installations revolve around the theme of “Transform,” which represents the physical transformation of the gift shop as well as the spring season, Bud said, adding that the gift shop was not as productive as they would have liked.

like to see warnings about how marijuana can cause drowsiness and impaired driving, and that it can affect pregnancies.

Medical marijuana sales began in Illinois in November under a 4-year pilot program, which Kay opposed. However,

he said he believes it will eventually become permanent and wants the labeling to be in place as soon as possible.

“It’s better coming sooner or later that we get the appropriate warnings on the package or whatever this is being dispensed in,” he said.

Firefighters pull back siding on a garage as they fight a fire that started shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday at a converted corn crib at 39 Palmyra Road in Dixon.

Separate from the residence, the structure, used to store supplies, suffered heavy damage from the fire that started when an ember from a wood boiler was blown onto the wood siding, according the Sterling Fire Department. The property’s owner could not give a dollar estimate of the damage. The Sterling, Dixon City and Dixon Rural, Polo and Milledgeville fire departments responded.

IN BRIEF Group calls for 5 paid sick days CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago employers should offer workers at least 5 paid sick days a year.

The Chicago Tribune reported that is the recommendation of the Working Families Task Force, which was formed after a nonbinding February 2015 referendum in which voters supported the adoption of paid sick days for workers.

An analysis conducted for the task force found that offering paid sick

leave would add 0.7 to 1.5 percent in labor costs for most employers, depending on size and usage.

The adoption of the recommendation would particularly affect low-wage workers, nearly 80 percent of whom don’t receive paid sick time.

Illinois Retail Merchants Association CEO Rob Karr says businesses are at a tipping point and these proposals will “only exacerbate the problems facing employees looking for more hours and higher wages.”

C

lay Jungerman, 18, of Dixon, is Newman Central Catholic High School’s January Student of the Month. He is the son of Clint and Jane Jungerman and he has four siblings, Sam, 16, Luke, 12, Ana, 10, and George, 8.

Favorite class: Engineering design, because I enjoy creating my own objects and being able to print them out on the 3D printer.

Least-favorite class: My teaching assistant period, because I’m not a big fan of grading papers.

Favorite teacher: Ann Propheter, calculus. She is teaching me curriculum that will be the basis for my future career, and she answers my many questions with more than satisfying answers.

Plus her friendly attitude always brightens the learning environment.

School activities: Cross country, basketball, track, Envirothon, Math Club, Student Council, Spanish Club, Recycling Club.

I’d say just creating things. Putting my imagination to work.

Is there a celebrity whom you look like/act like/feel like? When I asked my mom this ques-

tion, she answered James Dean (minus the rebel without a cause image) … reserved and cool.

Plus, I always say that I would have liked to live in the ‘50s.

What’s the one thing in your life you can’t do without? Probably being outdoors.

What is your advice for surviving high school?

Don’t let the little things affect you too much. It may seem like a big deal now, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s just high school. There’s so much more to look forward to afterward.

What scares you? Losing the ones closest to me.

There’s likely never been a tougher time for Illinois colleges or its students as the state enters its 10th month without a budget.

Monetary Award Program grants are not being funded at most colleges and several of the schools are cutting jobs and struggling to maintain programs.

Despite that, more students are going to college, even if the cost of an education has shot up since their parents’ day. So, Forbes has released its list of colleges where students get the most bang for their buck. It includes 11 schools in Illinois, with one ranked in the top ten nationally.

Forbes studied several factors that would impact the value of a college’s degree, including overall quality from their top colleges ‘ ranking, tuition and other fees, dropout risk, how long it took the aver-

OBITUARIES Marilyn White STERLING – Marilyn Ann White, 80, of Sterling, died Saturday, April 2, 2016, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

Marilyn was born Aug. 21, 1935, in Tampico, the daughter of Ellison R. and Anna K. (Klockenga) Hook. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1953.

Marilyn married James R. White on March 7, 1954, at her mother’s home in Sterling. They shared 62 wonderful years together.

Marilyn enjoyed antiquing and crafting.

She was a member of The Golden Girls with three other women, Claudia Wassman, Helen Holloway and Jan Perry, and she remained very active with her graduating class.

Marilyn was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Sterling.

Survivors include her husband, James R. White Sr. of Sterling; one daughter, Debra Ann Hopes of Sterling; three sons, James R. (Stephen)

White, Jr. of Fort Myers, Florida, Michael R. (Lynda) White of Corydon, Indiana, and Chris (Gina) White of Rock Falls; one sister, Elsie (Bud) Iben of Sterling; one brother, Donald (Delores) Hook of Mountain Home, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, Jessica Bell, Marjorie Lee, Donald Lee, Kelly Shawler, Lori Wilson, Danielle Wolffe, Amanda Wilhite and Brandon White; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and the funeral at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Wes Dickson officiating.

Jean Virginia Dudley James W. Musser OREGON — James W. Musser, 73, of Oregon, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford.

He was born Oct. 4, 1942, in Wolcott, Indiana, the son of Wilbur and Oberon (Copas) Musser. He married Donna Thor on May 24, 1964, in Galesburg.

James was employed for several years as materials manager for Etnyre Co. in Oregon and later retired from Rockford Tool Craft.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing, and was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend,

and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; daughter, Pam (Jeff) Stevens of Oregon; grandchildren, Kayla, Jenna, and Brady; sister, Barb (Eric) Culver of Wolcott; brother-inlaw, Roger (Karen) Thor of Oneida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ron. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, and memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Farrell-HollandGale Funeral Home, 110 S. Seventh St., Oregon, with the Rev. David Rogula officiating.

ROCK FALLS – Jean Virginia Dudley, 92, of Rock Falls, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.

Jean was born March 4, 1924, in Sterling, a daughter of Raymond and Irene (Karr) Gillman.

She eloped with George Albert Dudley Sr. in September 1942, and they were married in Missouri.

Jean was a member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, gardening, and baking.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, James (Peggy) Dudley Sr. and George (Beth) Dudley, Jr., both of Rock Falls, and Kenneth

Dudley Sr. of Sterling; 15 grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and her best canine companion, Weezy.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, George; a son, Albert; a sister, Betty Williams; and two grandchildren, James Dudley Jr. and Debra Sue Dudley.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rock Falls United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Fassig, pastor, officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Jean was born March 5, 1927, in Tampico, to Roy and Florence (Larson) Mickley. She married William E. Connelly on Nov. 27, 1943, in Tampico. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Morrison.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Laura A. Maas; four sons, William J. Connelly, Gary L. Connelly, Randal E. (Kristin) Connelly, and Thomas E. (Debra) Connelly; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Laverne (Mary Ann) Mickley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kent Connelly; two brothers, David and Kenneth Mickley; and one daughter-in-law, Kathy Connelly.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home in Morrison. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m.

She worked as a lunch and playground attendant at Lincoln School for 15 years before her retirement in 1992.

Delores was born Sept.

10, 1933, in Shannon, the daughter of Everett and Louella (Gettemy) Reid. She married Seldon “Catfish” O’Neal on June 24, 1961, in Dixon.

He preceded her in death March 26, 2013.

Delores was a member of Dixon Women of the Moose since 1974.

Survivors include two sons, Scott O’Neal and Terry (Dawn) O’Neal, one stepson, Gary Dale O’Neal, and one stepdaughter, April (Kim) Gallagher, all of Dixon;

one grandson, Michael O’Neal; many stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; one honorary brother, Norman Kidd of Jamestown, North Dakota; and one honorary sister, Carole Kidd of Tucson, Arizona.

She also was preceded in death by her parents.

In the program, office teams compete against each other or with groups at companies in other countries to see who can take the most daily steps during a 100-day challenge.

Workers post progress on a special social media website – for motivation and to egg on rival teams.

The study found workers on average increased their daily activity by 3,500 steps, exercised for almost 1 extra day per week, reduced sitting time by about 45 minutes daily, and lost about 3 pounds during the contests.

Whether the changes were lasting isn’t known.

The research was presented Sunday in Chicago at the American College of Cardiology’s annual meeting and published online in the group’s medical journal.

The limitations The study looked only at short-term results, so it isn’t known if the program leads to lasting longterm health benefits. The study also lacked information on any changes in workers with high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels and other conditions that can lead to heart disease, although exercise is known to benefit those conditions.

Industry ties Ganesan said he has no financial ties to Stepathlon. A top company executive is among the study co-authors but Ganesan said Stepathlon wasn’t involved in funding or the study analysis. Several other co-authors have received consulting or research fees from makers of pedometers.

CHICAGO (AP) – Heart failure patients with clogged arteries have a better chance of surviving 10 years if they get bypass surgery plus medicine rather than just drugs alone, according to an international study.

Earlier results from the same research raised questions about the benefits of bypass versus medicine alone, but researchers say the longterm evidence clearly favors the surgery.

The lead author of the study, Duke University cardiologist Dr. Eric Velazquez, said the results “are so definitive and so robust” that they would likely to lead to stronger recommendations favoring bypass surgery for these patients.

Nearly 6 million Americans and 23 mil-

lion people worldwide have heart failure, and many of them also have artery disease similar to those studied. In recent years, bypass surgery has increasingly been recommended for such patients, along with medicines to ease heart failure symptoms.

Concerns were raised when results after nearly 5 years of research showed about equal number of deaths in bypass patients and in those who got only medicine, despite fewer heart-related deaths in the bypass group. Those findings were published in 2011.

The 10-year results were published online Sunday in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at an American College of Cardiology meeting in Chicago.

Cramer explains, “These are folks who have been feeling a real struggle to make ends meet for decades now and they see a candidate coming along who says to them, ‘You’re right. You’re not getting your fair share. It sucks. And I’m going to stand up for you.’”

“That’s really appealing to people,” Cramer said before Tuesday’s primary in Wisconsin, where Cruz is leading Trump in polls.

Across all the states with data available, Trump was supported by 35 percent of college graduates, sharply off his 47 percent of those with a high school education or less. Still, in many states Trump has led even among the college-educated.

By comparison, support for Cruz hasn’t varied much by education, while those with postgraduate studies have been more likely than those with less education to support Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Kasich has led the postgraduate vote in three states – Michigan, Ohio and Vermont.

“If you’re aggressive from the start, you’ll junk your car in the first 4 minutes,” his 27-yearold teammate, Grant Lawson, said.

Wolber’s dad, Bill Ranken, 54, is not only the 22-year-old business’ owner. He’s also been in demo derby for 32 years, so when he’s in the grandstand yelling at Wolber, the prodigy has learned to listen. Crew members hold up signs advising their teammates during derbies. When not driving one of his trucks or small cars, Lawson is usually the guy in the pit.

ten quickly. After driving in his first derby at age 12, he won his second the following summer at the Ogle County Fairgrounds.

“It felt good to get my first one,” Wolber said. “I just drove smart and kept my head on both shoulders, didn’t floor it like I’d usually do.”

He was behind the wheel of a hand-medown car his brother, Derek Ranken, planned to junk.

“We thought it was beginner’s luck at first, but then he kept doing it again and again,” Wolber’s brother, Dylan Blackburn, 23, said. “He’s usually in the top three.”

As the target got bigger and brighter, he got better at internalizing.

“I just let it go out the other side,” he said. “I don’t worry about being targeted. I go with the flow.”

Adrenaline management is a tough task.

Drivers must follow promoters’ rules, which include the requirement to make contact every 60 seconds, or else being counted out and disqualified.

Whereas his dad grew up watching NASCAR predominantly, Wolber grew up watching Joel Jones, a bona fide oldschool vet from Rock Falls.

Members of the team drive in anywhere from five to 10 events each year, but so much hinges on how their cars hold up. The sport has gotten more and more expensive, with trucks of Lawson’s caliber costing $3,000 to $4,000, including the drive train and build time.

“This sport has gotten out of control, price-wise,” Grant said. “You can’t be in it for the money.”

A normal weld car like Blackburn’s, conversely, can run up to $20,000.

“You can get up to $10,000, real easy,” Ranken said.

“I’ve got $7,000 just in the engine,” Blackburn added.

The team’s seasonopening, 2-day derby, Spring Explosion, is April 15 and 16 in Champaign-Urbana, and the highlight of the schedule is a Father’s Day tradition, Metal Mayhem. This year’s event, which usually draws about 400 cars, will be June 17 and 18 at the Belvidere Boone County Fairgrounds.

“At its core, it is the result of the state of Illinois not having a sufficient budget for the last decade to address either unforeseen developments or under-appropriating areas of known expenditure,” Msall said.

In the most recent example, former Gov. Pat Quinn signed the 2015 fiscal year budget

into law, despite the fact that it wasn’t sufficient to cover the state’s expenses.

Lawmakers had to approve a fix last year to prevent some of the state’s services from running out of money.

Since the penalties hit a peak of $318 million in 2013, when the state paid down a huge backlog of Medicaid bills, late payment of state employee health insurance claims

have accounted for the bulk of the interest penalties paid by the state, according to the Civic Federation.

Officials from the governor’s office said in February that they’d be willing to explore the idea of borrowing money to reduce the bill backlog if the Legislature passed a balanced budget.

But no progress has been made on crafting a state budget for this year.

WASHINGTON (AP) – It was in Nevada, just about month ago, when Donald Trump proclaimed his affection for the uneducated.

“We won with young.

We won with old. We won with highly educated. We won with p o o r l y educated.

He should love them.

Trump overwhelmingly leads his rivals for support among the less educated, and draws more modest backing from college graduates and those with postgraduate study, according to exit polls conducted for the Associated Press and television networks by Edison Research.

In an analysis of voters by education in states where exit or entrance polling is available, nearly half of those with high school diplomas or less schooling said they supported the billionaire. Just over 40 percent of those with some college study favored him. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz captured the next best showing among the two groups, with 27 and 28 percent, respectively.

Eyewitnesses more credible than governor

n the debate over staffing and safety at the Dixon Correctional Center, we believe local corrections officers have a valid point.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich claims prisons are safer now than they were in 2001 (the year before Blagojevich’s election).

A political appointee of Blagojevich cited statistics that support this election-year assertion.

However, political appointees, and the governor, for that matter, spend no time inside prison walls. They get their information from bureaucrats and written reports. They come to their conclusions without gathering firsthand evidence.

Contrast that to the eyewitness accounts provided by corrections officers in a story in Wednesday’s Telegraph. These are the people who serve in the front line, making sure 2,208 inmates in the Dixon prison stay in line while serving sentences imposed by our court system.

Their stories are not pretty. Frightening is a better word.

One corrections officer was savagely beaten by an inmate; help took too long in arriving due to understaffing. Another was struck in the nose. A third was hit in the chest and ribs and splashed with urine. A fourth

In fact, inmates responded more quickly than guards in several of the attacks. It’s a precarious situation when guards have to depend on friendly inmates for first-responder backup in an emergency.

All this has happened as corrections staff declined by 8 percent, or 50 fewer employees, since 2001.

A union spokeswoman said understaffing has resulted in more assaults on guards.

While bureaucrats and politicians make their claims to the contrary, we think eyewitness accounts from inside the prison must not be ignored. ... The governor should know better than to play politics with prisons. He should respond as if corrections officers’ lives depended on it.

Industrialist made people his top priority It was not that long ago, January to be exact, when the Sterling-Rock Falls community was saddened by the death of Jack Wahl, former president and CEO of Wahl Clipper Corp.

This week, another industrial leader has died. Joe Bittorf, former plant superintendent and senior vice president at National Manufacturing, was only 72 when a heart attack claimed his life Monday morning.

Bittorf’s grandfather, Louis, founded the company in 1901. We believe he would have been proud of the way his grandson carried on the family legacy and enriched many lives along the way.

Friends recalled that Bittorf paid special attention to the employees, going above and beyond the call to help them solve their problems, dispensing advice and treating them as family. Friends said recognizing and rewarding efforts of employees became a tradition at the company, one which mirrored Bittorf’s outlook on life.

But the business had to be efficient to compete, and friends said Bittorf knew how to accomplish this. He focused on innovation and leadership.

Customers such as True Value Hardware and Do It Best were impressed; their strong demand for National’s products helped the company expand and hire more workers, to the point where the firm was one of the largest employers in the community.

National was the last privately held hardware manufacturer in the nation before its acquisition by Stanley Works last year. ...

Instead of getting “bigger and worser” under Bittorf’s watch, National became bigger and better. Come to think of it, so did Bittorf. ...

WASHINGTON – Reason has prevailed!

Guns will not be permitted at the Republican National Convention in July in Cleveland.

Perhaps this has not been on your radar, what with the embarrassing squabbling between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz over their wives, Trump’s campaign manager being arrested for battery on a reporter, the total lack of any intelligent response from either man in the aftermath of the terrorist bombings in Brussels, and all the GOP candidates venomously attacking their rivals, then vowing to support the eventual nominee, and now repudiating that pledge.

Even so, more than 50,000 people have signed a petition demanding that guns be in the sulfurous mix when Republicans gather July 18-21, which some can foresee as being something like a zombie apocalypse movie.

Ignoring the fact that Trump rallies have frequently turned violent (or perhaps because of that), so many Americans are terrified of losing the Second Amendment that protects the right to bear arms that they want to see gun-toting delegates swaggering around Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, commonly known as “The Q.” Ohio, my home state, is an open-carry state. It is not unusual to see good ole boys with assault rifles in their pickups parked in Wal-Mart parking lots. Guns carried in motor vehicles must be unloaded and secured.

Ammunition must be in a separate compartment. If you have alcohol in your system above the legal limit, you are not permitted to have a firearm in your vehicle or on your person. Guns are not permitted in establishments that serve alcohol; businesses may ban guns on their premises.

But people who legally own a firearm may carry it loaded with or without a license. (But not in the statehouse in Columbus – lawmakers are not completely clueless.)

The Q has a policy against guns or weapons of any kind on the premises, and that has enraged a number of gun advocates.

Petitioners are urging Ohio Gov. and presidential hopeful John Kasich to use his executive authority to permit guns at the arena, which holds about 20,000 people.

Surprisingly, or not, the three GOP presidential candidates left standing, Trump, Cruz and Kasich,

were initially noncommittal, even ambivalent, about the petition and the idea of guns at the convention. They are terrified of getting on the wrong side of gun advocates, who see any curb on gun sales, ownership or possession as the camel’s nose under the tent to the total loss of their weapons.

Convention officials shot the whole thing over to the Secret Service, which handles security at the national political conventions. The immediate and quite obvious answer was, “No guns.” Despite the problems the Secret Service has been having, what with knife-wielding crazy people getting inside the White House and far too much partying going on among some agents, the service is not stupid. They put their lives on the line every day but are not going to let angry people who don’t believe in political correctness, civility or polite discourse carry guns near the candidates or themselves.

Guns and Cleveland have a touchy recent history. In 2014, police shot and killed a 12-year-old child, Tamir Rice, who had a toy pellet gun in a city park. The U.S. Department of Justice investigation concluded that officers in Cleveland are too quick to shoot and beat suspects and rarely face consequences for their actions. The two officers involved in the shooting were not indicted.

The FBI says Cleveland ranks as the fifth most dangerous city in the nation because of crime. The violent crime rate is 1,478 per 100,000 people (Cleveland has a population of 389,000) and a murder rate of 14 per 100,000 people.

The median household income is $26,556; onethird of all its residents are below the federal poverty line.

Republicans chose the city for their convention because no Republican has ever won the White House without carrying the state of Ohio There is so much confusion, chaos, silliness and idle speculation already going on more than 100 days before Cleveland and the real possibility of rancorous debate and actual fighting over the nomination, that it is somehow reassuring to have a simple, well-reasoned answer to at least one issue. No guns.

Religion changes dynamics of friendship Dear Abby, About a year ago, my daughter befriended a schoolmate. After numerous playdates, our families have become close. While my family is atheist, we know this family is devoutly Christian. Recently, after I mentioned in conversation that we “weren’t religious,” they invited us to their church for service. I diplomatically declined, but it felt awkward having told the mom our non-beliefs.

‘Batman v Superman’ slides 68 percent in second weekend LOS ANGELES (AP) – Word of mouth might be kryptonite for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which fell a steep 68 percent in its second weekend in theaters, according to comScore estimates Sunday. The superhero pic earned an estimated $52.4 million over the weekend, easily besting the modest new openers like “God’s Not Dead 2” and “Meet the Blacks.”

The Zack Snyder movie cost a reported $250 million to produce and around $150 million to market, and has earned an estimated $261.5 million to date.

It’s a critical launching point for a series of interconnected movies in the DC Comics Universe from Warner Bros. that will include this year’s “Suicide Squad” and next year’s “Wonder Woman” and two “Justice League” movies, which is why its early performance – and hold – are being so intensely scrutinized.

Superhero movies tend

to be frontloaded with fans, and a near 60 percent fall is not uncommon for major blockbusters in weekend two.

“Sometimes the bigger they are the harder they fall,” said Paul Dergarabedian, comScore’s senior media analyst.

“This is often what happens when you have films that rank in the top 10 debuts of all time.”

Snyder’s “Man of Steel,” for instance, fell 64.6 percent in its second weekend, and even “The Dark Knight Rises” dropped a hefty 61.4 percent. Things aren’t terribly different in the Marvel universe either. Disney’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” tumbled 59.4 percent and Fox’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” plunged 64.2 percent.

Also, the first week “Batman v Superman” haul included the $27.7 million from Thursday night preview showings, whereas the second weekend sum does not account for those. The Friday of Easter weekend is also a hol-

iday for many, making a straight comparison not entirely equitable.

Still, 68 percent is on the steeper side for a second week fall. Last year’s much derided “Fantastic Four” reboot fell 68.2 percent and the divisive “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” dropped 69 percent in 2009.

In its first weekend, many wondered whether the poor reviews would kill the film out of the gates, but it ended up earning $166 million regardless.

“This has been a poster child in illustrating the disconnect between critics and audience,” Dergarabedian said.

The second weekend, however, is where word of mouth starts to come into play, and on-the-fence audiences must decide whether or not it’s worth their time and money.

But, the near future still looks promising for “Batman v Superman,” which has the skies to itself for the next week until Disney’s “The Jungle Book” opens on April 15.

Panel could clear the way for drones

Fraud cases on the rise as deadline nears

Categories would allow devices to fly over most populated areas WASHINGTON (AP) – A government-sponsored committee is recommending standards that could clear the way for commercial drone flights over populated areas and help speed the introduction of package delivery drones and other uses not yet possible, The Associated Press has learned.

The Federal Aviation Administration currently prohibits most commercial drone flights over populated areas, especially crowds. That ban frustrates a host of industries that want to take advantage of the technology.

“Every TV station in the country wants one, but they can’t be limited to flying in the middle of nowhere because there’s no news in the middle of nowhere,” said Jim Williams, a former head of FAA’s drone office who now advises the industry for Dentons, an international law firm.

Cellular network providers also want to loosen restrictions so drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, can inspect cell towers, which often are in urban areas. Ama-

zon’s vision for package deliveries entails drones winging their way over city and suburban neighborhoods.

The AP obtained a copy of the recommendations, which were sent to the FAA late Friday. The agency is not bound by the recommendations and can make changes when it writes final rules.

The recommendations call for creating four categories of small drones that commercial operators can fly over people, including crowds in some cases.

The first category of drones would weigh no more than about a halfpound. They essentially could fly unrestricted over people, including crowds. Drone makers would have to certify that if the drone hit someone, there would be no more than a 1 percent chance that the maximum force of the impact would cause a serious injury.

For the three other categories, the drones would have to fly at least 20 feet over the heads of people and keep a distance of at least 10 feet laterally from someone.

• Drones in the second category are expected to be mostly small quadcopters – drones with multiple arms and propellers, and weighing 4 pounds to 5 pounds – but there is no weight limit. Flights over people, including crowds, would depend on the design and operating instructions. Manufacturers would have to demonstrate through testing that the chance of a serious injury was 1 percent or less.

• Drones in the third category could not fly over crowds or densely populated areas. These drones would be used

for work in closed or restricted sites where the people that the drones fly over have permission from the drone operator to be present. Those people would be incidental to the drone operations and flights over them would be brief, rather than sustained.

Manufacturers would have to show there was a 30 percent chance or less that a person would be seriously injured if struck by the drone at the maximum strength impact possible.

• Drones in the fourth category could have sustained flights over crowds. The operator

would have to work with the FAA to show that the flights could be conducted safely and “engage” the local community while developing the plan. As before, the risk of serious injury would have to be 30 percent or less. Safety tests would be more exacting and the FAA would set a limit on how strong the drone’s maximum impact could be.

“The risks are nominal,” said Michael Drobac, executive director of the Small UAV Coalition.

“The reality is the technology would likely save lives rather than threaten them.”

NORMAL – Tax preparers in central Illinois are seeing an uptick in attempted fraud cases as the deadline approaches for filing tax returns.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” said Charles Sila, owner of Sila Accounting in Normal. “So far, this year, I’ve seen two identity theft cases. And so in my entire career, I have now seen a grand total of two. People need to be extremely careful.”

Fred Strieff, a tax preparer with McLean County Accounting and Tax Services in Bloomington, was notified by the Internal Revenue Service about a potential fraud case involving one of his clients.

“It seems the IRS is doing a pretty good job of catching people who are stealing other people’s Social Security numbers or trying to cheat,” he said.

Identity theft tops a list of tax scams for 2016, according to the IRS. However, prior to this year, the IRS estimates only a small percentage of tax crime convictions – 0.0033 percent of all taxpayers – occur in a year. The IRS also estimates that 17 percent of taxpayers fail to comply with the tax code in some way.

A few conventions are worthwhile

Students often ask which conventions they should use.

I typically answer, “As few as possible.” But some, which we will study this week, I consider indispensable for a pair who competes in a club duplicate or would like to win in a friendly game with neighbors.

First, look at the North hand in today’s diagram. Partner opens one no-trump; what should North do?

In the old days, North would have responded three spades, showing five spades and game-going values (or six-plus spades and thoughts of a slam). After South had raised to four spades, East would have led the heart queen, and the defenders would have taken three hearts and one spade.

Now, though, transfer bids

into the majors are ubiquitous.

North responds two hearts, showing five-plus spades and at least zero points. Here, South has a close decision; he probably just completes the transfer with two spades, but

he might jump to three spades, a superaccept indicating fourcard support, a doubleton somewhere and a maximum (which is why, with only 15 high-card points, it is questionable). Over two spades, North rebids three no-trump, offering a choice of games, and South retreats to four spades. Over three spades by South, North raises to game.

Against four spades, West leads the diamond queen.

Now South must resist the temptation to lead a trump, because East can win and shift with effect to the heart queen.

As no doubt you have noticed, South should immediately run clubs and discard two hearts from the dummy on the third and fourth rounds.

“It blends storytelling and education in a retail setting to provide an experience that can’t be found anywhere else but a small business,” Lisa said. “People will walk in and get a feeling that is uniquely tooled to reflect the community both artistically and horticulturally.”

Staff met in January to discuss the changing gardening industry and brainstorm what new features they wanted to institute for the spring.

The ultimate goal of the “Shop Story” concept is to present information in a simple, aesthetically pleasing form that is easily communicated to garden enthusiasts or those interested in starting a garden, Lisa said.

“Our present model is radically different than our previous ‘pile on’ method where everything was piled on top of each other, and people would have to walk around a few times to make sure they saw everything,” Lisa said.

The theme will change four times a year with the seasons, and the “Shop Story” will switch to the theme “Community” in early July.

With growing interest in preserving local plant life, the LeFevres also will be reintroducing a native plant collection and focusing on pollinator habitat plants. Lisa said they had a collection about a decade ago, but they didn’t have much luck selling them.

In addition to materializing the new concept, staff also have renovated one of the greenhouses and created a partnership that will bring an outdoor cafe to Distinctive Gardens.

A repurpose for everything under the sun: These 100-year-old tree badges decorate the gallery space at Distinctive Gardens. The gift shop area has been transformed into a gallery-like setting promoting local art, education and gardening.

Laura Santos and Jessica Lopez, managers of the Ginkgo Tree Cafe, will be opening the Art & Soul Cafe on April 30 during Springfest. They will operate on weekends and during special events at Distinctive Gardens.

“If you work together, you make a stronger community, and small businesses will flourish,” Bud said.

Because of the renovations, Lisa said they lagged behind on spring preparation, but the staff is excited to see how patrons will react to the changes.

“Everyone was engaged and contributed to the process,” she said. “Across the board, it was really a true collaboration.”

Distinctive Gardens opened its 18th season Friday, and an open house for “Transform” will take place from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Art & Soul Cafe weekly menu will be similar to what they offered at Ginkgo, featuring 4 different sandwiches, 2 different salads and 2 different beverages as well as tea and coffee. Take-and-bake pizzas will also be available.

Delivery orders will be taken at the cafe from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays.

Santos said the ingredients will continue to be gathered locally, promoting the “farm to table” concept.

Their Facebook announcement had 15,000 views and nearly 100 comments.

“Frankly, the response has been overwhelming,” Santos said. “It makes us feel great that people like what we do and appreciate what we have built.”

Senator: Two dead in crash were workers Train hits backhoe on track; collision injures more than 30 CHESTER, Pa. (AP) – An Amtrak train struck a piece of construction equipment just south of Philadelphia on Sunday, causing a derailment, killing two Amtrak workers and sending more than 30 passengers to hospitals, authorities said.

Train 89 was heading from New York to Savannah, Georgia, at about 8 a.m. when it hit a backhoe that was on the track in Chester, about 15 miles outside of Philadelphia, officials said. The impact derailed the lead engine of the train that was carrying more than 300 passengers and seven crew members.

Chester fire commissioner Travis Thomas said two people were killed.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters at a New York news conference on another subject Sunday that he was told by Amtrak board chairman Anthony Coscia that the workers killed were the backhoe operator and a super-

Schumer said it’s unclear whether the backhoe was performing regular maintenance, which is usually scheduled for Sunday mornings because there are fewer trains on the tracks, or whether it was clearing debris from high winds in the area overnight.

But he said Amtrak has “a 20-step protocol” for having backhoes on the track, and no trains are supposed to go on a track where such equipment is present.

“Clearly this seems very likely to be human error,” Schumer said, calling for Amtrak to review its processes. “There is virtually no excuse for a backhoe to be on an active track.”

Some of the passengers started to get off after the train stopped, but the conductor quickly stopped them.

Officials started evacuating people to the rear of the train and then off and to a local church.

“It was a very frightening experience. I’m frankly very glad that I was not on the first car,” where there were injuries, he said. “The moment that the car stopped, I said Shema, a Jewish prayer. ... I was just so thankful that the train had come to a stop and we were OK.”

Braving the elements Duchesses fight through wind for BNC crossover win

DIXON – Lexy Langloss and Kylee Hermeyer both agreed that the Dixon soccer team’s home opener Saturday morning against Burlington Central was the windiest match they’ve ever played in.

Temperatures hovered just above freezing, and a few token snowflakes blew past the A.C. Bowers soccer pitch. Winds from the northwest gusted to as high as 45 miles per hour, and consistent winds roared around 28-32 mph.

But the Duchesses successfully battled through the elements in a 4-3 win over the Rockets in Big Northern Conference crossover action.

Blasted shots by both teams boomeranged into the wind, and Central’s empty metal bench blew over onto the track early in the first half. However, the Duchesses (3-0) scored three second-half goals going into the wind. Hermeyer and Langloss provided key assists on two-on-one opportunities.

“This is crazy,” Langloss said. “When you’re running into the wind, it feels like there’s someone holding on to you, pulling you back. It will take the ball anywhere, so you can’t really play it in the air much.”

“You have to watch the ball in the air, and you’re going to have to play it sooner because you’re not going to be as fast,” Hermeyer said. “The runners are going to catch you, because it’s like you’re running with a 400-pound weight on your back.”

Brothers playing for bragging rights Britt, Jenkins epitomize matchup between Wildcats and Tar Heels

HOUSTON – Kris Jenkins and Nate Britt, brothers in every way except blood, are giving each other the silent treatment for about 48 hours.

Maybe they will exchange a “good luck” or a fist bump before Jenkins and Villanova (34-5) face Britt and North Carolina (33-6) on Monday night in the NCAA Tournament championship game.

Otherwise, “Nah,” Jenkins said, “no talking.”

It’s the biggest competition yet between a couple guys who grew up trying to beat each other in everything. While the Wildcats-Tar Heels matchup might be a no-lose situation for the Britt family, for the players involved there will definitely be only one winner.

“Whoever wins the game, obviously the other one is going to be hurt and going to feel bad,” Britt said. “That’ll be

permanent bragging rights for the rest of our lives.”

Jenkins and Britt met as 10-year-olds playing AAU basketball in the Washington D.C. area. Eventually, Jenkins started playing for a team coached

by Britt’s father, and spending lots of time at the Britts’ home – especially when Jenkins’ mother, Felicia, was spending almost all of her time at the hospital with her ailing infant daughter. Kori was 11 months old when she died.

When Felicia Jenkins, a former college basketball player, got a job coaching at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, she felt it would be best for Kris to stay with the Britts in Maryland permanently. In 2007, the Britts became Jenkins’ legal guardians.

“It’s been the greatest decision that’s ever happened in my life,” Jenkins said.

Time for hype is now over

I

t started in mid-February, when fans began congregating at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz., to get a glimpse of the Cubs.

The players quickly realized this season is going to be different than anything they have experienced, a supersized serving of last year’s excitement.

“People are clapping when we hit homers in batting practice,” Kyle Schwarber marveled, shaking his head.

“It’s batting practice!”

Schwarber responded by breaking the windshield on one car and denting another’s hood with a couple of monstrous BP home runs, then suggested fans refrain from parking outside the right-field fence.

The hype-o-meter was running, and the Cubs began embracing it, just as manager Joe Maddon instructed.

“We’re just more under the spotlight,” Anthony Rizzo said. “All the funny things we’ve done in the past few years now just get more attention. It comes with the territory with us playing in a big market, in the best city. It’s fun. We embrace it and have fun with it. This is what you play for.”

Meanwhile, on another side of the Cubs complex, President Theo Epstein was tempering expectations, saying they would die down once opening day arrived – and that’s tonight in Anaheim, Calif.

Has anyone calmed down yet?

“I know it’s a big story, but the expectations are just a spring-training, first-weekof-the-season narrative, honestly,” Epstein said. “We start out on the road. If we have a great trip, by the time get home everyone’s going to be excited about who got the game-winning hit on the last game. If we have a bad trip, everybody is going to be kind of panicking and anxious, the way you always are when you have a bad trip to start the season.

“The season has so many ups and downs, so many daily narratives, so many twists and turns. That’s what takes over during the season. No one is going to be talking about expectations. Throughout the season, [fans are] going to be reacting to what we’re doing.

Coach K undergoes knee surgery Duke says Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski is recovering from knee replacement surgery.

Krzyzewski had surgery at Duke University Hospital on Sunday morning. The school said in a news release that the 69-year-old coach could be released within 3 days and will begin a rehabilitation program.

Krzyzewski should be recovered in time to coach the U.S. men’s national team this summer in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Herman qualifies for Masters with win Jim Herman picked the right time for his first PGA Tour victory, closing with a 4-under 68 on Sunday to win the Shell Houston Open and earn his first trip to the Masters.

Herman chipped in for birdie on the par-3 16th hole to take the lead. He finished with two solid pars and beat Henrik Stenson by one shot.

The 37-yar-old Herman, who was No. 191 in the world ranking, used to work in the pro shop at one of Donald Trump’s golf courses when Trump encouraged him to give the PGA Tour one more try and helped support him financially.

Former Heisman winner Smith arrested Former Ohio State QB and Heisman winner Troy Smith was arrested Sunday on charges of driving under the influence, marijuana possession, and improper display of a license plate.

According to police, Smith was pulled over around 2:30 a.m. after an officer noticed his car didn’t have a front license plate, and then was seen swerving. After initially refusing a breathalyzer test, Smith was administered the test after his arrest, and his blood alcohol content measured 0.143. Ohio’s legal limit is 0.08.

In dashcam video provided by Westerville police, Smith, 31, is seen being asked to follow an object with his eyes, stand on one foot, and walk a straight line. To the last request, Smith remarks: “This is the home of the Buckeyes and this is what y’all do.”

Kaepernick not yet headed to Denver The 49ers may indeed send quarterback Colin Kaepernick to the Broncos. But the status of the the talks between the two teams is being overstated.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the 49ers and Broncos currently don’t have an agreement on trade compensation, officially or in principle, as was reported Saturday by ESPN.

Rockets sweep down south Warriors lose twice; Missiles softball routs SoBos

The Rock Falls baseball tram wrapped up a successful spring road trip on Saturday by taking two from Jerseyville, 9-8 in the opener and 11-6 in the nightcap.

Noah Junis (1-0) got the win in the first game, allowing eight runs (five earned) and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Logan Pillars tossed 2 1/3 inning of scoreless relief to earn the save.

Pillars also drove in three runs, and Bronson Mintun added two RBIs. James McFadden had two hits.

In the second game, the Rockets (8-1) scored four runs in the top of the seventh to pull away for the win.

Nolan Moeller (3-0) was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs (three earned) and eight hits in five innings, striking out eight.

McFadden allowed one unearned run in two innings to get the save.

Clay Velazquez knocked in two runs to pace the offense. Junis had two hits.

Sterling swept in Champaign:

The Golden Warriors lost twice to Champaign Central, losing the first game 6-0 and the second 12-2 in five innings.

Sterling limited the Maroons to one run in the first three innings of the opener but Central broke the game open with three runs in the fifth.

Trey Morse, Sam Wike, Zach Springman and Reilly Hay each collected hits for the Warriors. Turner Morse allowed one earned run in five innings on the mound but took the loss.

In Game 2, Central invoked the run rule with seven runs in the fifth inning. Sterling scored a pair

of runs in the first on RBIs from Trey Morse and Tyler Willman, but the Maroons tied it with a run in the second and one in the third before scoring three in the fourth to take the lead.

Willman started and pitched three innings. Trey Morse came on and worked 1 1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs in the loss.

Softball Rockets split on road: Windy conditions made for an interesting doubleheader down south, as Rock Falls (3-3) lost to Jerseyville 16-11 and defeated Piasa Southwestern 17-16.

Sydnie Nailor paced the offense in the opener with three hits, including a home run, and Payton Yanes allowed 14 hits in a complete game.

Yanes went 5-for-5 in the nightcap with a home run and two doubles, and Gracie Janson had three hits, including a double and a homer. Natalie Soltow allowed 12 hits in the victory.

Milledgeville 21, South Beloit 1, 5 inn.: The Missiles put together

a 13-run third inning and cruised to an NUIC win.

Every Milledgeville player who had an official at-bat got at least one hit in the game.

Natalie Brown had a grand slam as part of her five-RBI game; she also tripled. Ciara Miller drove in four runs, and Sam Schmidt was 3-for-3.

In the circle, Miller earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing four hits while striking out 13.

Girls track & field Warriors 4th at Moline: Paced by a strong showing from hurdlers

Ashleigh Tira and Sam Hibbard, Sterling finished fourth among seven teams at the Shipley Invitational in Moline.

The Golden Warriors had 203 points, behind Rock Island (286), Wheaton-Warrenville South (255) and Moline (226).

Tira won the ‘A’ division of the 300 hurdles (49.07), and was second in the 100 hurdles (17.04), while Hibbard won the ‘B’ division of the 100 hurdles (16.67) and was runner-up in the 300 hurdles (54.93).

Maggie McPherson placed second in the ‘A’ 1,600 (5:28.34), while Megan Geiger cleared 4-8 to place second in the ‘A’ high jump.

Sterling was also second in the 400 (52.32), 1,600 (4:33.84) and 3,200 (10:51) relays.

Girls soccer Alleman 7, Sterling 0: The Golden Warriors went on the road and were blanked by the Pioneers.

College baseball Sauk swept at home: The Skyhawks dropped a pair of Arrowhead Conference games Sunday in Dixon, falling to Carl Sandburg 17-3 and 11-2.

Evan Smith and Diontrell Earls each had two hits in the opener, and Earls and Trevor Bolin drove in runs. Bryant Lilly (0-1) went 2 2/3 innings in the loss, and Sauk (2-14) committed five errors.

Smith, Bryar Wilson and Oliden Herrera had two hits apiece in the nightcap, with Herrera and Nata Hernandez driving in runs.

Fabian Del Real (0-3) struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings, but Sandburg finished off the sweep with a six-run seventh inning.

Central’s final try came with 37 seconds left as Sydney Pryor’s blast from 25 yards out hooked around the right goal post – against the wind, but not far enough.

“The way we played today was not the greatest, especially in the first half,” Central coach Jessica Arneson said. “We weren’t the greatest in the first half, and we played a team that was much better as a team and played as a unit. I’ve got to give them credit; they had three goals against the wind.”

Both teams fared better getting shots with the wind at their backs.

Dixon outshot Central 15-4 (9-2 on-target) in the first half, while Central enjoyed a similar shots advantage (9-3 on-target) in the second half.

All three of Dixon’s shots on goal in the second half were successful. Lauren Chacon scored the first of her two goals in the 61st minute, extending the junior’s career tally to 73. Hermeyer dished to Chacon near the net, and with a 270-degree spin, she knocked one in from 4 yards out for a 2-0 advantage.

Jordan King led the Central rally with two goals, while Elizabeth Gousios added another.

The Duchesses’ only goal during that 4:44 span came off Chacon’s foot from 9 yards – which came after Langloss’ quarter-field blast from the right side.

Duchesses keeper Ellie Provo stopped six Central shot attempts. Not

moving a whole lot when away from the action, the wind became more prevalent while idle.

However, it didn’t deter Provo when needing to

scope out positioning for her defenders.

“I just keep my mind focused on the game,” Provo said. “I help my teammates on the field, and that’s what I keep my focus on. I don’t really think about the cold.”

Both Dixon and Central are favorites in their respective divisions of the BNC, and Saturday’s win could determine overall conference bragging rights in the Rockets’ final season in the conference. Duchesses coach Mahmoud Etemadi pointed to the contest as a major challenge for his team, and they’ll have another today when another 2A team, Geneseo, comes to A.C. Bowers for a 6 p.m. tilt.

“We expected a tough game against them,” Etemadi said. “This is the type of team in [2A] that we will be facing in the postseason. We knew about it, we prepared for it, and we talked about it. Our players responded very well.”

Busch finally figures out track Kyle dominates Martinsville field to finish weekend sweep

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Kyle Busch finally figured out Martinsville Speedway in his truck victory on Saturday.

He dominated it on Sunday, leading 352 laps and pulling away on a restart with 11 laps to go to outrun AJ Allmendinger to the finish for his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory on the series’ smallest, oldest oval, and a sweep of the two-race weekend.

Busch, who won for the first time in 31 starts at Martinsville in the truck race on Saturday, earned his 35th Cup victory on the season’s first short track. He has now won on every Sprint Cup Series track except three: Kansas, Charlotte and Pocono.

The option to pick the inside or outside line as the leader on the final restart was great for Busch, but not for teammate Matt Kenseth.

“That was the key to the race, being able to restart on the bottom like that,” Busch said after choosing the inside line, putting Kenseth outside.

“We all talked as a group earlier this morning about how we were going to do that and what we were going to do, and we all said, with 10 to go, it’s pretty much off limits. It was [11] to go, so it was pretty much right on the brink there, so, ‘Sorry, Matt.’”

When the green flag flew, Busch sailed off, Allmendinger beat Kenseth to the inside position, and Kenseth got shuffled back to 15th.

Busch, meanwhile, led the most laps at Martinsville since Bobby Hamilton was out front for 378 on April 20, 1998.

Allmendinger was second, followed by Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon and Brad Keselowski.

“I was kind of hoping we’d stay green the last 120 laps,” Allmendinger said. “I figured that wasn’t going to happen, but I was praying we had a shot at that because I felt like if that happened, we had a great chance to win the race.”

Several other drivers who pitted before the final restart started in the sixth row, or further back, of side-by-side racing, and while Larson and Keselowski recovered for top-five finishes, others got caught up in traffic and that allowed Dillon to hang on out of nowhere.

It was the second straight race at Martinsville, long a Kenseth nemesis, that was a huge disappointment for the former series champion.

Last spring, he crashed race leader Joey Logano with 46 laps to go, earning himself a two-race suspension. This time, he seemed poised to challenge Busch for the lead with 35 laps to go until a blown tire by Jamie McMurray caused a caution, bunching up the field.

“I was a little worried there toward the end before that last caution came out that Matt was catching me,” Busch said. “He was on me pretty good, and I wasn’t sure that I had enough brake in order to handle the rest of the day, but fortunately we got a yellow there.”

The race also was a lost day for Denny Hamlin, the defending champion and one of the favorites going in.

Hamlin was running fifth after 221 laps after overcoming a pit road penalty until his car lost control heading into Turn 1 and slammed into the wall, sending him to the garage. He never returned, and finished 42nd.

he first thing to understand is Robin Ventura doesn’t care if he’s perceived as being on the proverbial hot seat, whether it’s really hot or just lukewarm.

Ventura enters the final year of his contract with a .458 winning percentage in his 4 years at the helm of the White Sox. They’re a combined 62 games below .500 since 2013, finishing fifth, fourth and fourth, respectively, in the American League Central.

Like potholes on Ashland Avenue, there never will be a shortage of those calling for a new manager, especially if the 2016 season gets off to a rocky start.

“Whatever,” Ventura said. “I mean, I enjoy [managing]. I’m having fun doing this. You could ask the players if I’m any different. They would see it more than I would anyway. I don’t think I’m much different [this season] as far as what I care about getting done.

“These guys are going about doing their business, and it has been good. I don’t wake up every day thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I have to go save my job.’ It’s baseball.

Eventually I won’t be here. That’s just the way the game works.”

Ventura had a hard act to follow in Ozzie Guillen, his former Sox teammate who was colorful, talkative, and had a championship ring to boot.

Guillen finally has been reunited with the Sox organization after a cold war with top baseball executive Ken Williams, and there are some who pine for his return.

Even in the final year of his contract and with a losing record in his 4 years as White Sox manager, Robin Ventura (right) isn’t worried about any extra pressure to win from GM Rick Hahn (left).

The chances of that seem minuscule, but as long as he’s not managing in the majors again, Guillen’s long shadow will hover over Ventura, at least until the Sox start winning. Guillen was even at Sox camp a couple of days during spring training, entertaining the media like the old days.

“That doesn’t bother me,” Ventura said. “I’m going to be fine.”

The Sox players like Ventura, as Chris Sale stressed during the Drake LaRoche saga, saying Ventura should have been allowed to handle the decision on the clubhouse time allotted Adam LaRoche’s son instead of Williams.

The criticism of Ventura as being too dispassionate and too close to his players to discipline anyone isn’t going to change, because he’s not going to change.

He won’t fake being a hothead. And he insists he does get in a player’s grill if he sees him playing

the game the wrong way.

Ventura says he just prefers to do it out of sight.

“It’s handled,” he said. “[Critics] probably just want to see a little more flesh out there.”

Perhaps Ventura can be more like a certain Coach Ditka and show when he’s perturbed at his team’s play? “‘Dikka?’” he said, using the preferred “Saturday Night Live” moniker for Mike Ditka, the former Bears coach. “Everybody has a way to go about it.

I’m not going to change that because I’m in the last year of my deal and [people would] rather have some of that.

“For me, we’re a better team right now, and I’m going to let this group dictate that.”

This is going to be a forkin-the-road year for the Sox, who had a nice spring despite the mishandled LaRoche episode, which turned into a national story. General manager

Rick Hahn appears to have upgraded the lineup, albeit with several players on 1-year contracts and no starting position players from the farm system.

If the Sox disappoint again, who knows what will happen.

“It is [an important year] because if it doesn’t work with this, where does it go?” Ventura asked. “What are you going to do?”

Blow it up?

“I don’t know if that’s the answer or not,” he said.

“There’s a pretty good mixture of young guys and older guys, and inbetween and on the way out. So it’s a good little collection of everything.”

Ventura said he liked the “vibe” in camp, and it would appear he needs that vibe to stick around.

It would be difficult for management to grant him an extension if the Sox aren’t at least contenders.

Whether his seat is hot or not, Ventura probably will have to deal with that fact during the course of the season.

Only one word is necessary to describe the way Ventura undoubtedly feels about that.

Whatever.

Francisco Liriano tied a Pirates opening-day record by striking out 10, and singled home the first run of the 2016 Major League Baseball season for good measure, sending Pittsburgh past the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Sunday in Pittsburgh.

It was 39 degrees when Liriano threw the first pitch of the year. He allowed just three hits and walked five in six shutout innings, and his 10 strikeouts matched the club’s opening day mark John Candelaria set in 1983 and Liriano matched in 2014.

Liriano’s RBI hit in the second came off Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright. David Freese, the 2011 World Series MVP for the Cardinals, had two hits against his former club in his debut with Pittsburgh. Francisco Cervelli and Gregory Polanco also had two hits apiece for the Pirates.

Pittsburgh pointed to the honor of playing the first of the 2,430 games in the majors this season as a sign of respect for how far the franchise has come under manager Clint Hurdle.

The Cardinals and the Pirates have the two best records in MLB since the start of 2013, fueling a rivalry that – along with the ascension of the Chicago Cubs – could make the race for the NL Central crown one of the most compelling storylines yet again.

“I just don’t really worry about it, especially with this group,” Epstein added. “They’re highcharacter guys. They’re highly motivated. They’re not complacent. They super hungry. [The expectations are] kind of an external thing.”

You can blame Epstein for that. He rebuilt the roster from the team he inherited in the fall of 2011, and has added three key free agents to a 97-win team that advanced to the National League Championship Series last year.

Is there any wonder hype springs eternal?

“Even back in ’97 when we won the World Series with the Marlins, there wasn’t this much hype,” former Cub-turned-analyst Cliff Floyd said. “We knew we were good, but there was not much hype because our nemesis was the Braves, and no one thought we could get past them.

“I’ve been on teams that were good going into camp. I look back on my Mets days, bringing in [Carlos] Beltran and [Carlos] Delgado and [Paul] Lo Duca. It was awesome, but the hype was because it was New York.

“This is bright lights, big city, and a young team. Now is the time to get your season tickets for 10 years. This is going to be something you can enjoy for a minute.”

Cubs fans are ready. Record crowds jammed Sloan Park during spring training, and Wrigley Field is certain to be electric April 11 for the home opener.

The abundance of young talent, a historic ballpark, and a city that devours baseball were all reasons why Jason Heyward ditched the Cardinals for the North Side.

All the spring shenanigans at Cubs camp, from the karaoke to the tricked-out Dodge van to the mime, convinced Heyward he has made the right call.

“Being new and everything, he didn’t want to run a camp like this year’s [last season] and really throw everybody off,” Lester said. “He makes it fun, makes it relaxed, and then all you have to worry about is showing up on time, putting the effort in and being prepared, which at this level makes our lives a hell of a lot easier.

“Because we’re not worried about ‘Are we dressed right,’ or ‘Are we doing this right,’ or ‘Are we sitting in the right seat? Am I parked in the right spot?’ It’s just ‘Be yourself, play baseball and have fun.’”

CHICAGO – Patrick Kane had three goals and an assist, and the Chicago Blackhawks raced to a six-goal lead in the second period before hanging on for a 6-4 win over the Boston Bruins on Sunday.

Kane’s scoring spree gave him 100 points for the first time in his 9-year career. The win was career No. 800 for Chicago coach Joel Quenneville.

“A special day,” Kane said. “My 100th point on a hat-trick goal as well. Pretty cool the way it happened. Just one of those nights where things are going in.

“Our line was creating a lot and had a lot of chances. Just a fun night overall.”

Kane, the NHL’s leading scorer, was clicking with linemates Artemi Panarin and Artem Anisimov early and often in the club’s fourth win it its last five games. Panarin had a goal and three assists, while Anisimov added a goal and two assists.

“They were great,” Quenneville said. “Individually, collectively, fun to watch, nice plays on the goals.

“Getting 40 goals is a big achievement,” Quenneville added about Kane. “Getting 100

points in today’s game, not too many players in the last few years have accomplished that feat.

He’s had a special year.”

Patrice Bergeron had two goals and an assist for the Bruins. He and David Pastrnak scored 11 seconds apart late in the second period. Bruins starting goalie Tuukka Rask was replaced by Jonas Gustavsson early in the second after allowing a four goals on 22 shots. Brad Marchand scored on a deflection midway through the third to cut it to 6-4.

Jonathan Toews also scored for the Blackhawks, who won’t finish lower than third in the Central Division and will avoid a wild-card playoff seeding.

Kane’s second career regular-season hat trick – both this season – lifted him to 43 goals, the most for a Chicago player since Tony Amonte hit that mark in 1999-2000.

He’s the first Blackhawk to reach 100 points since Jeremy Roenick had 107 in 1993-94.

Chicago’s Scott Darling made 42 saves in his ninth straight start as Corey Crawford remained sidelined with an upper-body injury. Before the game, Quenneville said he expects Crawford to be ready for the playoffs.

Butler has big weekend for Bulls All-Star guard leads way to split with Pistons, Bucks By the Associated Press

Jimmy Butler scored 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting, Pau Gasol had 16 points and eight rebounds, and the Chicago Bulls held off a secondhalf surge by the Bucks for a 102-98 win Sunday night in Milwaukee.

Butler had six points and an assist in the final 3:45, when the Bucks had narrowed a 19-point deficit to one at 87-86.

Justin Holiday hit a tough jumper from the corner with 1:15 left, and later grabbed a defensive rebound on a missed finger roll by Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo with 43.9 seconds to go as the Bulls (39-38) held on.

Antetokounmpo scored a career-high 34 points, while Jabari Parker added 24 for Milwaukee (32-45).

The Bulls sit two games behind the Pacers and Pistons, who are both 41-36 and occupy the last two Eastern Conference playoff spots.

’Cats go crazy vs. Sooners Villanova routs Oklahoma; Heels pull away from Orange By the Associated Press

HOUSTON – Villanova advanced to the national championship game Saturday night with the biggest margin of victory in Final Four history, overwhelming Buddy Hield and Oklahoma in a resounding 95-51 victory.

Josh Hart scored 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting for the Wildcats (345), whose margin of victory topped 34-point Final Four wins by Cincinnati over Oregon State in 1962 and Michigan State over Penn in 1979.

“That was just one of those nights,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “I feel bad for Oklahoma.”

The Wildcats now have four wins in the tournament of at least 19 points, the only close game a 5-point win over overall No. 1 seed Kansas in the regional final.

Villanova dominated the Sooners (29-8) after an opening 7 minutes that had the teams trading the lead on almost every possession.

The Wildcats broke it open with a 21-4 run. The stats about NRG Stadium being a horrible place to shoot went out the window along with the Sooners’ chances at playing for their first national championship.

The Wildcats, with Hart going 7-for-8, shot 66.7 percent in the first half, including 6-for-11 from 3-point range in taking a 42-28 halftime lead.

“We knew how they could beat us bad so we had a lot of fear coming into this game,” Wright said.

As the Wildcats, who won it all in 1985 with the shocking upset of Georgetown, kept making shots, Oklahoma star Buddy Hield kept missing.

The unanimous AllAmerica selection was 3-for-8 in the first half, including 1-for-5 from beyond the arc. Hield came into the game shooting 46.5 percent from 3-point range.

“Just playing defensively as a team ... we contained him,” Hart said.

North Carolina 83, Syracuse 66: Marcus Paige

made three 3-pointers in the second half to help North Carolina stifle a Syracuse rally as the Tar Heels moved within one win of their sixth title.

The Tar Heels (336) were 0-for-11 from 3-point range midway through the second half, and Syracuse trimmed a 17-point deficit to seven before Paige found his range. He hit three 3s over the span of 7 minutes to end Syracuse’s chances.

“Marcus was hitting some big-time open shots,” said Brice Johnson, his roommate and teammate. “If you’re going to leave Marcus Paige open, I’m quite sure he’s going to make a lot of those.”

Paige finished with 13 points, and Johnson had 16 points and nine rebounds. Justin Jackson also scored 16, and Kennedy Meeks added 15 points and eight rebounds as the Tar Heels finished with 16 second-chance points on 16 offensive boards.

“Their [2-3] zone, it’s almost, on paper, a nightmare matchup for us because we don’t shoot it well from 3,” Paige said. “But we were able to get the ball inside, get it where we wanted to.”

Syracuse (23-14), the first No. 10 seed to make the Final Four, got 22 points from Trevor Cooney and 12 from fellow senior Michael Gbinije. Malachi Richardson added 17, and his 3 trimmed the deficit to seven with 9:48 left.

“We didn’t have to play perfect, but we had to shoot better tonight,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said.
