LEE COUNTY | SHERIFF’S FIRST MONTH ON JOB
New policies in town Mutual aid pact involves Dixon police BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521
DIXON – One month after Lee County Sheriff John Simonton took office, big changes are happening. Besides the usual departmental and structural changes of a new sheriff, some changes are a little more obvious. Those include an updated sheriff’s department website, and a new social media presence: a Facebook fan page that, as of Wednesday afternoon, had
garnered more than 1,200 likes since it was started Dec. 6. As for the changes that are harder to see, Simonton has been working closely with Dixon Police Chief Danny Langloss and State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller to create a sense of teamwork and to build a support system throughout the various departments in the county. Simonton describes the changes in three major parts. POLICIES CONTINUED ON A2

MORRISON | ALEX FISCHBACH’S ‘AMERICAN IDOL’ AUDITION
Humble but hungry Staying true to self point of pride for 19-year-old BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521
MORRISON – You might know his face from the Whiteside County Fair, where he’s been singing the national anthem every year since he was 12. Or you might know him from his place of employment – Baked By Liz, which his parents own and where he works. Well, Jan. 21, if you tune into American Idol on Fox, you’ll see 19-year-old Alex Fischbach in a different light – as a contestant on one of the nation’s favorite shows. His Minneapolis audition for this season of American Idol will air that day, but this isn’t his first rodeo. Back when he was 16, Fischbach and his parents, Brent and Elizabeth, drove to Denver – what he remembers as a 19-hour trek – to try his luck at stardom. He made it all the way to a private audition with the judges.
ILLINOIS | STATE COMPTROLLER OFFICE
Dems oppose Rauner, plan vote GOP calls today’s special session a purely partisan move SPRINGFIELD (AP) – The Democrat-controlled General Assembly plans to convene today and vote on whether to hold a special election in 2 years for state comptroller, potentially handing Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner a loss even before he takes office next week. House Speaker Michael Madigan on Wednesday threw his support behind a proposal for a 2016 special election to fill the seat of late comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, an idea pitched by outgoing Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. Rauner opposes it and intends to name a 4-year replacement immediately after he is sworn in. VOTE CONTINUED ON A4
