With the shorter days and cooler temperatures, the season is ripe for freshly picked apples from Indian Hills Orchard, which opened for the season on Friday, Sept. 3.

The orchard is the “retirement” work of Darrell and Sally Meinsma, also known as the “cotton candy” people in Fulton.

Darrell, a retired 3M chemical engineer, has been growing apples for the past 16 years, starting out with just a few trees and a roadside stand.

The orchard has been a “learn as they go” process, though one that has never missed a yield. The Meinsmas have over 250 apple trees and half a dozen peach trees on 2 1/2 acres of their L-shaped property, with their home situated behind groves of maturing trees.

The trees have been planted in stages over the years, with test plots, “lots of work,” and navigating the ups and downs of Midwestern agriculture, from frosts to storms to drought. The August 2020 derecho took out a swath of the fruit-bearing trees, which still need to be replaced.

The apple barn was built about four years ago, complete with the main showroom, washing room, and storage rooms for the fourteen varieties of apples they grow. Available now are Pristine, Zestar, Paula Red (early McIntosh), Gala, and some early Honeycrisp. The Red and Golden Delicious trees are loaded this year, but won’t be ready to harvest for another couple weeks.

The apple barn inventory will continue to grow as the season progresses, with the addition of more varieties, plus seasonal offerings of cantaloupe, pumpkins,

Customers can mix and match their apple choices in to-go bags, which range from $4 - $5 for small bags, or $8 - $10 for the large. They also offer bushel rates, or about 40 pounds of apples, which are perfect for the bakers and preservers.

Upcoming events for the season include Food Pantry Day on Saturday, Sept. 25, with all proceeds to be given to the Fulton-Thomson Food Pantry, and Cotton Candy Day on Saturday, Oct. 2, held in conjunction with Fulton Fall Festival. The Meinsmas will be giving away free cotton candy at both locations, making it ahead of time with their commercial grade machine.

They also host occasional field trips at the orchard, including their daughter’s 3rd grade class from Fulton Elementary.

An inherited 1931 Ford Model A pickup truck provides a perfect backdrop for photos at the barn, where the couple’s four children and five grandchildren regularly visit during harvest time. The business’s proximity to the Lincoln Highway makes it a quick and convenient stop for the perfect autumn snack.

Three jailed in Thomson meth, weapons bust Two Thomson residents are facing felony meth and weapons charges after a “lengthy investigation” resulted in a search of a home in the 800 block of Locust Street around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, Carroll County Sheriff Ryan Kloepping said in a news release.

Drugs, paraphernalia and a stolen AR-15 were found in the home, and its three occupants were arrested and taken to Carroll County jail, Kloepping said in the release.

Aaron N. King, 45, of Thomson is charged with committing several crimes: Possession of more than 5 grams but less than 15 grams of methamphetamine, a charge that carries a sentence of at least 4 to 15 years in prison if convicted; possession of a stolen firearm, a charge that carries a sentence of 3 to 7 years in prison if convicted; possession of a weapon by a felon and criminal fortification of a build-

ing, both charges that carry a sentence of 2 to 5 years in prison if convicted; and misdemeanor possession of syringes and needles.

Bobbi Jo Erdmann, 42, of Thomson is charged with felony possession of more than 5 grams but less than 15 grams of methamphetamine, possession of a stolen firearm, and criminal fortification of a building. Erdmann also is charged with misdemeanor violation of the FOID Act and possession of syringes and needles.

Rebecca S.J. Veselko, 45, of Miles, Iowa is charged with possession of meth, a charge that carries a sentence of 2 to 5 years in prison if convicted.

According to the probable cause affidavits, King and Erdmann live at the home.

The AR-15 was behind the couch, a loaded magazine alongside it; a search of the serial number showed the gun was stolen.

Officers also found 6.5 grams of meth, two digital scales and seven cellphones, and outside, there were six cameras streaming live images to a monitor inside the home, and a hard drive to store the recordings, all indications of a narcotics operation, according to the affidavits.

The Illinois State Police, its SWAT team and its meth response team assisted at the scene, Kloepping said in the release.

According to a probable cause affidavit, King previously was convicted of felonies in 2004 and 2008, although details of those crimes were not provided.

King was convicted in 2016 in Whiteside County of aggravated DUI and driving with a suspended license, and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison in 2000 for felony escape, also in Whiteside County, court records show.

Marvin J. and Ethel J. VanZuiden of 624 N. Jackson St., Morrison, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

The former Ethel Zuidema and Marvin VanZuiden were married at Ebenezer Reformed Church by Rev. Spencer DeJong.

Marvin was the Whiteside County recorder for 30 years, and Ethel was employed at the ASCS office for 25 years.

They are the parents of three children, Michael (Barb), Tim of Morrison and Rhonda (Jeff) Keister of Clinton, Iowa. They have been blessed with five grandchildren, Travis (Veronica), Tyler (Tawny) and Noah VanZuiden and Brad and Matt (Chloe) Keister. They also have been blessed with four great-grandchildren, Madalyn Mae, Lola Chesney, and Beckett Marvin Ha ll Kei ster and Lil lian May VanZuiden.

The couple will celebrate with a family dinner at a later date.

Betty Schaver will be celebrating her 90th birthday on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Betty was born at home in rural Fenton on Sept. 11, 1931. She married the love of her life, William (Bill) Betty Schaver Schaver, on June 10, 1949.

Betty was employed by General Electric in Morrison for 28 years. Bill passed away in 2018 after 68 years of marriage. Betty is a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton.

A family get-together is being planned by her children, Steven (Kelly) Schaver, Diane (Pat) Barrett and Brenda (David) Sheckler. Betty has been blessed with nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Engineer with Morrison ties invents ‘Robotany’ for spouse’s research

Just ask James Jackson Potter.

A lecturer and mechanical engineer with lifetime ties to Morrison and Sterling, he led the students who created a portable robotic imaging device for botanists doing field research.

Which is important because it was created for his wife, biologist Rachel Penczykowski, and her team from Washington University in St. Louis.

“I asked her for projects,” said Potter, who also is on the Washington University faculty. “I’m always looking for projects for my senior design class.”

What Penczykowski needed was a more efficient means to collect data in the field, especially the summer survey of plants damaged by insects and pathogens along the Mississippi River.

The traditional recording methods just weren’t cutting it. They could make handwritten observations in a notebook and designate locations. But it wasn’t a thorough collection of data – material that could be studied later in detail.

“We didn’t have anything,” Penczykowski said. “Take out a point-andshoot camera and take a photo of the landscape and the site just to characterize the scene. It was not a way to systematically take photos on the ground from a consistent angle and distance.”

Moreover, the team is on the move.

Duluth to New Orleans is a lot of ground to cover. There are high-resolution camera rigs, but they weren’t that portable. They took too much time to set up and take down.

Potter gave his students at the McKelvey School of Engineering the task of designing a machine that could provide high-resolution photography of ground cover over a 1-meter square patch. The device had to be lightweight, quick to assemble on site and constructed out of

Potter said there were three cycles to the design process. Initially, groups of students took on the task of coming up with concepts.

“One did a really good job of making a viable machine,” Potter said. “One of the students in that group took it another semester to improve certain aspects. I did another cycle to make sure it was as good as I could make it.

The design they settled on used a frame of PVC pipe and a camera mounted on two aluminum rails. The camera takes 24 photographs as it moves on the track, recording everything within the 1-meter grid.

The entire device costs about $500.

Disassembled, it fits into a golf bag.

“I made a second version of the machine so we could take one and Rachel’s lab tech could take the other one. I made it with just hand tools,” Potter said.

The machine got a trial run nearby.

Morrison Rockwood State Park is a regular stop for Penczykowski’s team.

It was a good spot to put the “Robotany” as they call it through its paces.

work that is required to collect that data in real time on the ground in the field,” Penczykowski said. “Field time is so precious. … Any data we can bring back to process later is well worth it to us.”

A program takes the 24 separate

images and makes a composite. All the photography is high-resolution, providing new levels of detail. The data also is now available to researchers outside her lab.

“It’s been great during COVID for those students who can’t come into the lab,” Penczykowski said. “We have several students doing remote research projects using our image analysis.”

The process for creating the device was published – Sylvia Tan is the co-author – in Methods in Ecology and Evolution.

“The reviewers of the paper had good things to say about the machine,” Potter said.

“When I give seminars, I always put in a plug for our device,” Penczykowski said.

Penczykowski, 36, is an assistant professor of biology whose research interests are in host-parasite interactions. Potter, 38, is a 2001 Sterling High School graduate with a master’s degree from Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They both got their respective doctorates from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Morrison Community Hospital updated its COVID-19 testing protocol in light of the surge in cases.

The hospital said it will only test patients with COVID-19-like symptoms. Qualifying individuals must stay in their vehicle and call 815- 772-55 11. Drive rs will be directed to the North Ambulance bay, where a nurse will test people while they remain in their vehicle.

For rapid results, people will be directed to a designated parking space. After results are delivered, people will be screened by a provider in the Family Care Clinic, which is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, Whiteside County has a transmission case rate of 146.811 per 100,000 people.

Its test positivity rate is 3.36%.

Whiteside County Health Department pauses rapid testing at state’s request SAUK VALLEY MEDIA ROCK FALLS – The Whiteside County Health Department said Sept. 2 that it was complying with a request from the Illinois Department of Public Health to pause rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 to preserve dwindling resources.

Cory Law, who is with the Whiteside County Health Department, said in a news release that the state is asking local health departments to prioritize testing and preserve resources for schools.

Law said the state is exploring

options to provide resources and assistance to schools and community testing. In a followup email Sept. 2, Law said the department was waiting for further guidance from IDPH. The testing pause includes the “Know Before You Go” testing that the Whiteside County Health Department had been offering on Fridays but had planned on replacing with antigen testing.

The change comes the same day that the Whiteside County Health Department had planned to institute a change in rapid testing procedures to cope with what it called an “over-

whelming demand” of its service. The department said Sept. 1 that it was limiting its period of testing and warned that its supply of antigen tests could run out.

Testing has been on the rise across the Sauk Valley region. All four counties are considered areas of high transmission of COVID-19.

According to data posted by the IDPH from the Illinois National Electronic Disease Surveillance System, Whiteside County has administered 1,158 tests since the end of counting on Aug. 29 through 2:30 p.m. Sept. 2.

tional 58 cases during that time period.

In the same time period, Ogle County has administered 664 tests, Lee County 461 tests and Carroll County 155 tests.

Test positivity rates for the region as of Sept. 1 were 1.99% in Lee County, 3.22% in Whiteside County, 10.63% in Carroll County and 10.7% in Ogle County, the IDPH dashboard showed.

Tests are not administered in Lee County by the health department, but rather by KSB Town Square Centre Lab, 101 W. Second St., Dixon. An appointment is required by calling the KSB provider’s office.

HILLSDALE FIRE On Tuesday, August 30, Hillsdale Fire was dispatched to a semi trailer fire for a fully evolved fire on Interstate 88 eastbound, around mile marker 9. Port Byron Fire was dispatched for auto-aid as well.

Upon arrival, Hillsdale Chief Tony DeCap called for additional resources from Erie Fire as well as the MABAS 39 Hazmat Team due to the type and size of the fire.

The eastbound lanes of traffic were closed by Illinois State Police for safety.

The semi trailer on fire was transporting a full load of prepackaged petroleum based products. The intense heat from

the fire caused it to spread quickly. As the product burned, it spread into the ditch on the south side, as well as the median. Crews quickly attacked and gained control of the fire using fire fighting foam to help extinguish the blaze.

MABAS crews provided additional firefighting foam, as well as containment for the spilled product. The eastbound lanes were closed for several hours as crews worked late into the night to deal with the fire and subsequent spill.

Crews from Port Byron Fire, Erie Fire, Colona Fire, Silvis Fire, Coal Valley Fire, MABAS 39 Hazmat team, Genesis Ambulance Service, Illinois State Police, and the IDOT all responded to help.

Aug. 27 Devin J. Schmaling of Albany was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident at Clinton Road and Route 84. He was released with a promise to comply.

Morrison police

On Saturday, Aug. 28, about 10:30 p.m., Morrison police received a driving complaint of a vehicle going west on Route 30 into Morrison. Morrison police observed the vehicle pull into a parking lot in the 700 block of West Lincolnway.

As a result of the investigation, Morrison police arrested and charged Larry A. Deets, 49, of Rock Falls with driving under the influence of alcohol. Deets was taken to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released on a notice to appear.

Illinois State Police District 1 commander Capt. Matthew Hodgdon announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for August.

Illinois State Police District 1 troopers issued 461 citations and 579 written warnings, and made 14 criminal arrests during the month of August.

Speeding accounted for 252 citations, 30 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 22 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

There were 21 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/revoked.

Troopers investigated 13 traffic crashes, assisted 133 motorists, and conducted 180 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 26 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

There were seven arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated no fatal traffic crashes in August.

B.L.I.N.D has been a big part of my life all through high school. Freshman year, coming into a new building and not knowing what to expect, my B.L.I.N.D leader was able to help me get comfortable in a new place and open myself up to many opportunities. When I applied to be a leader my junior and senior year, I knew I wanted to be the same type of B.L.I.N.D leader mine was to me. I wanted to help freshmen be comfortable and know high school is fun and not as scary as some make it out to be.

Becoming a B.L.I.N.D leader is an amazing experience. You get to open new doors and meet so many new people outside the community. Take advantage of this opportunity because it’s one that has changed my life for the better.

If you were given $1000, what would you do with it?

If I were given $1000, first off, I would be in disbelief because my luck has never been that good, and secondly, I would split the money, put half into a savings account

and the other half donate to charity.

If there was something you could do to change the world, what would it be?

If I do something to change the world, it would be to help minorities in the United States and help people get their voices heard by politicians and people with power in our country.

What is your claim to fame?

My claim to fame is I have been to 28 states in the United States.

IN BRIEF Local student Carter Shepherd graduates from Space Camp

Carter Shepherd of Fenton recently attended Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, home of Space Camp, Space Camp Robotics, Aviation Challenge and U.S. Cyber Camp. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is a Smithsonian affiliate and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center.

The weeklong educational program promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while training students with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem-solving.

The program is specifically designed for trainees who have a passion for space exploration. Carter spent the week training with a team that flew a simulated space mission to the International Space Station, the moon or Mars. The crew participated in experiments and successfully completed an extra-vehicular activity or spacewalk. Carter and crew returned to Earth in time to graduate with honors.

Space Camp is located in Huntsville, Alabama, and uses astronaut training techniques to engage trainees in real-world applications of STEM subjects. The City Council voted to extend the storm sewers to the intersection of 12th Street and Seventh Avenue to relieve flooding resulting from the construction of the new junior high school building and accompanying changes in the terrain. The project will cost about $3,000, City Waterworks Superintendent James Shipma said.

Getting notification from the director of School Food Services of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the district’s cafeteria project has been approved for the Non-Food Assistance Program to help purchase equipment for the new kitchen that is being installed in Fulton Junior High School.

Total cost of the project including plumbing and electrical contracts will be about $40,000.

Mrs. Alvin Sikkema was elected president of the Harbor Crest Woman’s Auxiliary at a recent meeting. Mrs. Harold Sikkema Jr. was elected vice president. The inherited condition of muscular dystrophy

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Muscular dystrophy is a term that includes inherited conditions of the muscle system that cause progressive weakness. Occasionally other organs, including the heart, will be involved.

While the condition is inherited, it may present at different stages of a person’s life based on the type of inheritance pattern, as well as the severity of the particular condition. In some settings, only males are affected. Others

affect male and female. Most of the muscular dystrophies are x-linked disorders, meaning most can transmit the conditions to their sons, even though they themselves are unaffected.

Muscular dystrophy affects about 50,000 Americans. More of these are living longer because of advances in medical care. Some will even enjoy a normal lifespan while others will develop a severe form and die in their late teens to early 20s. There are no specific treatments for the condition.

The Timken Company announced it has agreed to acquire privately held Drives LLC for $92 million. Timken had sales of $4.1 billion in 2010 and 20,000 people operating in 30 countries.

Representing Central Bank, Karrie Kenney gave a $2,500 donation to the Fulton Fire Department to help with the purchase of new air packs. Fulton Fire Department’s Dave Murphy and Joe Michaelsen accepted the donation.

The department’s goal is to replace the current 20-minute air packs with a new system allowing firefighters to double the time they can be in a smoke-filled atmosphere.

Riverdale’s Tommy Murray didn’t waste any time running away with a first place finish at the Oregon Open on Saturday.

Murray bolted from the start line and led the majority of the 5,000 meters race finishing in 16 minutes, 34 seconds, well ahead of second place finisher, Illinois Math & Science Academy’s Matthew Torres who finished in 17:01.

That time, coupled with the rest of the Rams’ times, brought a big smile to the face of Riverdale Coach Kevin Claus.

“The rest of our runners, especially our fourth and fifth, really stepped up today,” said Klaus after the 30-team event, held at Oregon Park West, just west of the Oregon High School campus.

Landis Musser finished fourth in 17:12 followed by Peyton Sand in ninth at 17:58.

The rest of the Rams were: Cameron Overton, 26th in 18:39; Cael Hinde, 39th, 19:08; Caden Ludin, 40th, 19:09; and Caleb Bollinger, 66th, 20:03.

Ag Day a hit at Riverdale Elementary School

A little rain may have dampened the grounds during the annual Ag Day at Riverdale Elementary School on Friday, Sept. 3, but it didn’t stop the fun, laughter, and hands-on learning.

From tractors to livestock to farming activities, local farmers and volunteers taught students about agriculture while under canopies in the field.

Now in its sixth year at Riverdale, the event is coordinated by Mike and Amy Saddoris of Port Byron and supported by school staff and Riverdale PTO. The Saddorises used to host the Ag Experience at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds as part of the Farm Bureau Young Farmers, but after that program ended, they decided to bring it to the Riverdale community.

Besides their family farm work, Amy is a 4th grade teacher at Riverdale and Mike works in the research department at Wyffels Hybrids, which supported the event by providing popcorn for the “field corn” theme, and a day off for Mike.

Daughters Sarah, a junior in college, and Emily, a sophomore at RHS, also joined in for the day of learning. “We like to do educational activities, like what you’d find on a farm,” Mike said of the family’s mission.

The classrooms rotated throughout

the day, with kindergarteners to 5th graders getting up close to learn about the animals at each station.

That was a team effort, with Wes DeClercq bringing in beef cattle, Glen Saddoris supplying three piglets, Deke and Sarah Carls bringing dairy goats and Bliss the horse, and Jane and Greg Clampitt bringing a demo bee hive and honey, which was a first this year.

Students also learned about Border Collies as herding dogs, lassoing, horseshoes, and eggs, thanks to a variety of games and activities.

Four 4-H Buccaneers Club members and nine Riverdale FFA students, plus advisor Richard Houzenga, offered plenty of helping hands. Emily Saddoris, one of the 4-Hers, was stationed at the pig pen. She talked about feedings, anatomy, and 4-H shows while the playful 6-week-old piglets had the kids laughing.

Her sister Sarah led the discussion on horses, with the kids guessing their favorite snacks, such as strawberries, carrots, and apples. “I love ag, teaching kids, giving back, and coming back for this event,” Sarah said of the day.

Superintendent Josh Temple was happy to have the event return this year. “It’s always well supported by the local community. It’s something fun to look forward to and a way to extend the classroom outside. The kids are always excited, especially seeing the livestock.”

Riverdale cross country coach

On Aug. 29, 2019, four Riverdale cross country athletes – Tommy Murray, Landis Musser, Peyton Sand and Caden Ludin – toed the starting line at the Moline season opener, which would be their first-ever cross country meet.

Cael Hinde ran 18:28, which was 31 seconds faster than he ran on the course last October. Hinde placed 22nd and was the sixth team finisher.

In his first cross country race and likely his first race over a mile, Gage Gaulrapp competed like he’s been doing

this forever. Gaulrapp ran a fairly evenpaced race in 19:36, which put him 34th and seventh on the team.

No strangers to tough conditions are Caleb Bollinger and Mitch Hasenour.

Bollinger had a 39th-place finish with a time of 19:49. Hasenour ran a 20:52 and place 50th.

Freshmen Silas Peschang, Andy Murray and Adam Benoit ran awesome in their first high school cross country meet.

Prophetstown 200: The Panthers

Kennedy Buck and Mya Jones had four kills each. Buck added nine assists and an ace. Jaiden Oleson had six assists, five digs and an ace. Emma Davis led the way with 11 digs for E-P.

River Bend Bulldogs drop two in home opener The River Bend Bulldogs hosted the Erie/Prophetstown Panthers in their home opener Aug. 28. With the heat index hovering around 105 degrees, the Panthers prevailed in two of the three contests.

The seventh/eighth grade Bulldogs took on a talented Panthers team and battled to a 20-14 loss. The game started with the Panthers attempting an onside kick that was negated by a penalty. The Bulldogs took their first possession down the field to the end zone. Landen Leu’s touchdown run put the Bulldogs up 6-0 after a missed extra point. On the Panthers’ opening drive, they faced a third-and-10 on their own 45 when they scored on a 55-yard

run and added a 2-point conversion for an 8-6 lead. After a successful onside kick, E/P faced another third-and-long situation. This time, the Panthers scored on a 44 yard-pass play to go ahead 14-6. Wise to the onside kick, the Bulldogs’ Brody Glazier recovered the ensuing kickoff. Unable to move the ball, the Bulldogs went into halftime trailing 14-6.

The Panthers scored late in the third quarter on a long run to take a 20-6 lead. After the fifth attempt of an onside kick by the Panthers, River Bend recovered and put together a drive that resulted in a 38-yard TD strike from Braedon Meyers to Leu. River Bend converted the 2-point attempt to close the

gap to within 20-14.

The sixth grade Bulldogs continued their winning ways with a 22-6 victory over the Panthers. The game was dominated by the Bulldogs’ offensive line, which created big holes for running backs Brayden Powell and DeAngelo Dodd. The Bulldogs defense had big plays by linebackers Easton Spooner and Victor Jackson. Both Aiden VanZuiden and Evan McWilliams had extra-point conversions on passes from Talon Meyer.

The fifth grade Bulldogs, playing their first-ever game, saw two big touchdown runs by the Panthers’ Caleb Brown decide the game. The Panthers won 14-0.
