River Bend schools reopening update This update is being provided as the District Return to Learn Team has discussed the latest State guidance and how the guidelines impact opening our schools this fall.

We discussed around half of the items on our agenda. As we keep discussing the guidance, we will provide updates to our families as this will have impacts on our community.

Pasta Night helps Special Athletes Kathy Suehl and Barbara Fratz, chairpersons for Pasta Night, presented a check in the amount of, $1,600 to John (Spider) Christiansen. The money was earned through a mail-out done yearly to obtain funds to purchase food for Pasta Night.

For 26 years, until COVID-19 prohibited the hosting of the meal, area realtors made desserts, served the meal and helped with carry outs to earn money for the Clinton and Whiteside County Special Athletes.

Two years ago, Mike Rastrelli generously offered to do the cooking as long as the workers were provided. The athletes readily said, “YES” and jumped right in with realtors and parents. Thank you to Rastrellis for taking over this main part

of the event.

The QCARA Realtor Association thanks the businesses who donated.

Winning Wheels Spotlight: Yvonne O. Yvonne O., age 47, is from Canton, Massachusetts. Her family is her mother, Jeanne, brother, Matt, sister, Ryann, and supportive friend, Dana. Yvonne interned at a daycare with infants, as well as helped with the public school afterschool program.

Yvonne came to Winning Wheels because she wanted to learn how to eat (and can now eat a regular diet!), and there are not many places for younger adults in the

country. After she completes therapy, she may go “down the road to Florida” as she has lots of family that lives there.

Yvonne’s favorite Winning Wheels activities are adaptive water skiing and power soccer.

Her hobbies are going outside and enjoying the sun, listening to music, as well as computers.

Her favorite food is “any and all pizza” and her favorite movies are all the Harry Potters (no specific

favorite one); her favorite TV show is “Deadliest Catch.”

Yvonne proudly represented the United States in Holland for the 1990 Paralympics World Championships in Track and Field.

Sterling man, Rock Falls woman wanted for murder South Carolina police search for couple in connection with June 28 incident

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com STERLING – A local couple, one of whom is a longtime felon wanted in a stabbing a year ago, are on the lam on the East Coast, accused of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and grand larceny.

Jorden E. Johnson , 27, of Sterling, and Latisha Desiree Evans, 20, of Rock Falls, are wanted by Georgetown, South Carolina police in connection with an incident at a hotel last Sunday that left one person dead and another critically injured.

According to South Strand News of Georgetown, police were called to Rodeway Inn around 8:30 a.m.

Monday, where they found a woman with “critical” injuries bleeding outside a room and 66-yearold Jack Kendree Jr. dead inside, covered in blood.

An autopsy was to be held today; the cause of death has not been released.

Latisha D. Evans and Jorden E. Johnson The two were spotted July 1 in the Millford, Connecticut area in the victim’s stolen car, the paper reported.

A car belonging to one of the victims was found burning east of Harmon early on the morning of Friday, July 3, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department said.

The pair are considered armed and dangerous. If spotted, people are advised to call police or Crime Stoppers, not to approach them.

Johnson is white, 6-toot-2 and 225 pounds; he has a tattoo on his face; Evans is Black, 5-foot-3 and 150 pounds. They may have altered their appearance.

The local case involves a stabbing that happened Aug. 17 in the 1400 block of East 14th Street, during an argument after a party, Sterling police said.

Johnson is charged in Whiteside County Court with being a felon using or possessing a weapon, punishable by 3 to 7 years in prison, and four counts of aggravated battery, punishable by 2 to 5 years.

He has an extensive felony history in Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties.

In 2017, Johnson was convicted of aggravated battery in Lee County and sentenced to 3 years, and to theft in Ogle County and sentenced to 2 years.

He was convicted of aggravated battery in Whiteside County in 2011 and sentenced to 3 years, and of residential burglary and sentenced to 6 years.

He was convicted in 2010 of burglary in Whiteside County and was given 2 years’ probation, but he violated the terms, it was revoked, and he was sentenced to 3 years.

FAIR EXHIBITORS

IDOA announces youth livestock and horse fair Illinois youth livestock and horse exhibitors will return to the Illinois State Fairground and the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in late summer to show their animals, the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) announced recently.

“After the cancellations of the Illinois and Du Quoin State Fairs, we knew there was a need to recognize our junior exhibitors who work year round preparing for the fairs,” Acting Ag Director Jerry Costello II said in a prepared statement. We are excited to provide

modified shows that will provide an opportunity for young adults to exhibit their animals safely following the Restore Illinois plan.

The livestock shows will happen on two weekends in Springfield while the horse shows will start the end of August in DuQuoin and continue in September. Participation is restricted to Illinois residents ages 8 to 21.

Exhibitors will bring beef cattle, sheep, dairy goats, pygmy goats and rabbits to show at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Sept. 11-13. From

Sept. 18-20, exhibitors will show hogs, dairy cattle and meat goats in Springfield.

At the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, a Junior Horse Show will start with English style classes Aug. 29-30. From Sept. 5-6, riders will return for Western style classes on the southern Illinois fairgrounds.

A $10 entry fee will be charged for the Junior Horse Show. Livestock entry fees will vary, depending on the species. A $20 fee will be charged for beef cattle. A $15 fee will be charged for dairy cattle, swine,

sheep and goats. A $1 fee will be charged for rabbits and poultry.

On June 12, Gov. J.B. Pritzker canceled the two state fairs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Illinois 4-H is planning virtual judging for thousands of 4-Hers who represent their county 4-H programs in state competitions that traditionally are held during the Illinois State Fair.

MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse, which is in the middle of a major expansion project, is canceling its 2020 season because of the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19, the theater company announced today.

“Next week, we would have celebrated the world premiere of ‘What a Wonderful World’,” Dan Danielowski, executive director of TLP, said in a news release. “To have to make this decision is very disappointing to all of us.”

The Restore Illinois Phase 4 guidelines limit gatherings to 50 people.

“Not only is it tough to play to 50 people in a 400-seat theater, we have already pre-sold more than double the number of tickets that we could allow in the theatre per production,” Danielowski said.

More than 50 company members had to be released from their contracts.

“Although they were disappointed in hearing the season was cancelled, they understood and expected this decision,” Artistic Director Paul Stancato said in the release.

“As of today, we are not sure what

their 2020 subscriptions for 2021 subscription.

Concert or show ticketholders can convert their tickets into gift certificates that can be used for anything at TLP including registration for education programs, online purchases from the gift shop, or next year’s tickets and subscriptions. Gift certificates never expire.

Before the pandemic took hold, though, the 59-year-old summer stock theater was in the midst a 5-year, $1.4 million expansion and upgrade that including winterization, new housing, rehearsal areas, and dining facilities, with the goal of becoming a year-round entertainemnt venue.

Stage 2 Return To Play Guidelines approved IHSA adds recovery phase The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced on Friday, July 3, that its Stage 2 Return To Play Guidelines have been approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and can be instituted

by IHSA schools on July 5.

“Safety remains at the forefront of everything that the IHSA is doing as we move into Phase 4 and beyond,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “We appreciate the collaborative efforts of the SMAC and IDPH in recognizing the physical, mental, and emotional benefits for

our student-athletes and coaches as they progress into training in a more traditional practice setting.

Our focus now shifts to continuing to work with state leadership to determine how to provide the safest environment possible for fall sports.”

Fans do not traditionally attend contests conducted under the summer contact day format, however, if a host school allows fans to attend, they will be limited to 20% capacity of their facility or less, based on the policy of the host school.

General highlights of the guidelines of Summer Contact Days feature: (Students are limited to 5 hours of participation per day) Pre-Workout: *Schools must maintain a daily

record of what athletes are participating * Athletes should be screened at the start of practice * Gatherings of up to 50 individuals, indoors or outdoors Facilities Cleaning: * Adequate cleaning schedules, before and after each use * Weight equipment should be wiped down thoroughly before and after an individual’s use Hydration: *All students shall bring their own water bottle Contests: Group sizes should be limited to 50 total participants, coaches, and referees Students should maintain social distancing on the sidelines when not engaged in activities.

If schools choose to permit spectators, there should be a designated area for spectators with existing seating capped at 20% of capacity and allows 6 feet of distance between families/household units.

Schmidt sisters share 2020 graduations

The three daughters of Shawnel Soenksen and Kris Schmidt are sharing the 2020 vision of earning promotional certificates and starting another chapter in their life in the same year.

Elizabeth “Ellie” Schmidt Elizabeth was a 2017 graduate of Morrison High School (National Honor Society) and has always longed to be in the medical career field first becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) while still in high school.

To further accomplish her endeavor, while working as a CNA at Community General Hospital (CGH) in Sterling, Elizabeth attended Sauk Valley Community College and became a 2020 graduate of the

Jordan Schmidt Jordan, a 2016 graduate of Morrison High School (National Honor Society), became a 2020 graduate from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. Her goal is to challenge her inner creativity and become a graphic designer aspiring to work for a firm in

nursing program. On June 08, 2020, Elizabeth passed her National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX-RN) and officially became a Registered Nurse. Soon, she will start her full-time position with CGH working on the critical care floor.

Gracyn Schmidt Gracyn is a 2020 graduate of Morrison High School (National Honor Society)and will start her future educational plans by attending Capri College-Davenport where she will concentrate on Cosmetology. James Stratton of Cordova has been named to the Knox College Dean’s List

IN BRIEF SVCC receives Pathway Grant Sauk Valley Community College, with the help of ROE 47, has applied for, and was awarded, a grant to fund educational pathways for local high school students.

As one of 11 grant recipients, SVCC is proud to announce that this $249,000 grant is phase one of a four phase grant cycle that will allow the college to better aid area students who are interested in careers in the education field.

High school pathways is a project that SVCC has been working on with area partners.

Receiving the grant will allow SVCC to continue its partnerships with ROE 47, Fulton High School, Morrison High

School, Rock Falls High School, Dixon High School, and Whiteside Area Career Center.

The funding will enable this collaborative to identify students interested in an education career as early as middle school and align their coursework and experiences to have a focus on education.

It is the goal of the grant for the schools in the partnership to be self-sufficient at the end of the four-phase cycle and encourage additional schools in the Sauk Valley area to participate and invest in pathways for our local students.

Virtual College visits available Now is the perfect time for high school students, or those interested in exploring a new career, to make plans for the future. Whether it’s a four- or two-year degree or short-term career training, they have much to choose from in deciding what fits best for them.

With COVID-19 limiting access to so many buildings, including college campuses, students might be wondering how they can explore their college options.

Visits include EICC’s Clinton, Muscatine and Scott Community Colleges as well as its downtown Davenport Urban

Campus and Blong Technology Center.

During the session, students will learn about the college, our programs, the admissions process and financial aid.

Visits will be hosted on Zoom, the online conferencing platform, or Facebook Live.

Both Zoom and Facebook Live do not require any special software to use.

Participants will need a microphone to be able to ask questions but the normal microphone on a phone or tablet device works. A camera is a nice addition so the presenter can make “virtual” eye contact with participants but is not required. Group sessions will be held: July 9 at 5:30 p.m. via Facebook Live July 13 at 9 a.m. via Zoom July 21 at 1 p.m. via Zoom July 29 at 10 a.m. via Zoom Individual sessions are also available for those who can’t join in on the group session, or are just more comfortable asking their questions individually.

These are scheduled at a time convenient for the student.

Vagus nerve: The most powerful nerve in the body

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. The vagus nerve is not only the longest nerve in the body but one of the most powerful as well.

Researchers have implanted devices to stimulate the vagus nerve and seen a variety of benefits including protecting the heart.

These devices are already approved for testing seizures and depression They are being studied for fibromyalgia, diabetes, irritable bowel, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.

The way this process works is that

activation of the vagus nerve leads to decreased inflammation.

Other conditions of common nature associated with decreased vagaries tone are hoarseness, migraines, low blood pressure, choking while eating, addiction, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune disease, and many others.

The vagus nerve is the one that causes the gag reflex. The importance of this nerve helps to control both the parasympathetic system and sympathetic system.

Think of these as somewhat oppo-

site functions with the sympathetic system being the flight or fright system and the parasympathetic system the natural relaxation portion that also controls breathing and heart rate.

The Heart Rate Variability measurement is how the heart varies with breathing in the breathing out.

Higher differences in the heart rates with breathing are associated with better health, better hearts, increased happiness, improvement in mortality.

vagal tone: deep breathing with your diaphragm; meditation; singing, chanting, humming.

The sound Ohm is particularly helpful; laughing; tai chi; gargling; increased omega 3 in diet; relaxing music like ocean waves; cold water on the face; aromatherapy; fasting; massages; yoga; face to face social encounters and other activities to increase oxytocin; and sun exposure which helps with UV. All of the above help increase acetylcholine which helps with relaxation.

A perfect attendance award for 27 years was presented to Earl Snyder of the Fulton Kiwanis Club. He has one of the longest records of attendance of any Kiwanis club member in the country. Donald Huizenga and Marion Adams, 3 years each; James Shipma, two years; and Leonard Martin and John Wiersema, one year each.

Mayor E. Donald Huizenga announced he and his wife had sold their half interest in the Fulton Locker Service and had completed arrangements for purchase of John’s Home Furnishings. His interest of the locker service is being transferred to Mr. and Mrs Frank Zuidema.

Fulton Kiwanis Club has agreed to provide up to $300 from its activity fund to make improvements in a new baseball diamond to be located along the river on South Fourth Street and to be known as Kiwanis Park.

Fulton gained 269 in popoulation between 1960 and 1970, according to preliminary totals released by the Census Bureau office in Chicago to Mayor Warren Wiersema.

4-H DOG SHOW

Multi-County Virtual Dog Show winners announced This year’s University of Illinois Extension 4-H multi-county dog show was held virtually between June 20 and 28. This is the third year that Carroll, DeKalb, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties have participated in a multi-county show.

All participants were encouraged to upload either photos or videos, depending on class, for a judge to review starting June 22. Despite circumstances for this year’s show, 13 participants submitted entries with their furry friends, from their backyards, garages, and homes.

Worship begins at 9 a.m. on July 12 at First Reformed Church, located at 510 - 15th Avenue in Fulton.

Rev. Chuck Huckaby from New Braunfels, Texas will preach and hold a question and answer session with the congregation after the service.

Special music will be given by an instrumental ensemble of piano, keyboard, organ, flute and guitars.

Social distancing will be practiced and masks are required.

At 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, the senior meal will be served in Fellowship Hall. Also on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m., Feed the Children will provide bags of groceries curbside from the parsonage garage.
