“Love Someone, Love Fulton” challenge extended FACE, Fulton’s community foundation, has received an additional grant of $5,000 from the D.S. Flikkema Foundation to extend the “Love Someone, Love Fulton” challenge match for another year.

Directing memorials and tributes to the FACE Community Impact Endowment is always an effective way to broadly support the Fulton community, but right now each donation that pays tribute to someone or something important to that donor can be even more impactful.

Whether it is congratulating a recent graduate, thanking a vet, appreciating a first responder, remembering a loved

one, honoring a spouse, cheering on a team, or commemorating a birthday or anniversary, a donation right now achieves three goals.

First, all donations of at least $25 to the Community Impact Fund are acknowledged on the LOVE SOMEONE, LOVE FULTON display in the windows of the Masonic Lodge in downtown Fulton.

Sharing the donor’s love or appreciation with the community at large - that is the “love someone” component.

Second, all donations will do good within Fulton, building up the fund used to provide grants to local charitable groups which provide so many services throughout Fulton—that is the “love Ful-

ton” component.

Third, the $5,000 in matching funds will double the impact of each gift received until more than $5,000 in new donations has been received—and that amounts to a double dose of “love Fulton.”

Patricia (Pat) Pell will be celebrating her 90th birthday on Friday, July 31.

Pat was born to Frank and Hazel (LaValley) Conrad on July 31, 1930. She was united in marriage on May 3, 1952 to James Pell. They were married for 63 years before his passing on September 18, 2015.

Together they raised four sons, Greg (Brenda), David, Douglas (Deb) and Kevin, deceased. Pat has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Morrison Police Dept. welcomes Shaun Magill

The Morrison Police Department is proud to welcome Shaun Magill as a full time law enforcement officer effective June 19.

Magill is a 2014 graduate of West Carroll High School in Savanna and a member of a law enforcement family. Due to the familiar environment created by his

father, Chief of Police in Lanark, step-father who is a sergeant in the Fulton Police Department and a mother who is a police dispatcher, he received plenty of support toward entering law enforcement.

Following high school, Magill attended the University of Illinois and played football for the Fighting Illlini under coach Lovie Smith. After receiving a degree in Kinesiology, interests directed him to an occupation that offered daily chal-

lenges and plenty of community interaction. Serving time with the DeKalb Police Department helped him realize the importance of having a position that engaged the public more and the smaller town of Morrison offered that situation.

He is an active, year ’round hunter and enjoys time with his siblings and caring for his dogs.

Give Magill a wave and welcome him to Morrison.

Extension to resume limited in-person activities On August 1, the University of Illinois Extension will allow staff and volunteers to resume limited in-person gatherings of up to 10 people and increase the limit up to 25 starting August 16. All larger extension events will continue to be virtual.

All participants and staff will be required to practice social distanc-

ing and wear face coverings during in-person activities.

“We know that many of our 4-H members and their families have felt the loss of the in-person 4-H shows that are such an iconic part of summertime in Illinois,” Lisa Diaz, Illinois 4-H director, said in a prepared statement. “But early feedback

from our families who have participated in a virtual 4-H show already this summer is that it’s still a great learning opportunity that provides a showcase experience for 4-H members.”

All 4-H general project and 4-H livestock shows and exhibitions scheduled through August 31 will move

online to a virtual exhibition via FairEntry. All overnight camps are canceled through the end of August.

During the fall, the University of Illinois Extension will continue phasing in in-person programs to ensure proper safety protocols, space management plans and public health requirements are fully adopted.

It was also revealed in the IESA’s memo to member schools that: • The IESA intends to sponsor sports which can be contested within current COVID-prevention guidelines, even if others cannot be held due to those guidelines, specifically mentioning it plans to proceed with its state golf series.

• Softball and baseball – with practices scheduled to begin July 27 and August 3, respectively – could see the starts of their seasons delayed if doing so could salvage parts of their seasons.

• If activities are held, the eligibility of student-athletes whose families choose remote learning when in-person learning is also available will be determined by the school district, not the IESA. • The IESA plans to suspend or cancel all activities should the state government move entirely to remote learning during any point of the coming school year.

Kelly Pannier, Morrison, was named to Mount Mercy University’s Spring 2020 Dean’s List. Students with a semester grade point average of 3.60 or better and who are graded for six or more semester hours are eligible for inclusion on the Dean’s List.

The Illinois Elementary School Association issued a release Thursday, indicating that its board of directors met remotely last week “to discuss the possibility/practicality of holding IESA activities in the 2020-21 school year” but is still awaiting a response from the governor’s office and the Illinois Department of Public Health [IDPH] before finalizing its plans.

“The IESA has sent several emails to the Governor’s Office and Illinois Department of Public Health seeking guidance regarding interscholastic activity participation and health and safety requirements,” Thursday afternoon’s release said. “The answers that we receive from these agencies will

have a significant impact on the type of activity and/or format of the activity that we are able to offer during this school year. To date, we have not received answers to our inquiries.”

The IESA also confirmed that Illinois High School Association [IHSA] Executive Director Craig Anderson was on the call Wednesday. The IHSA earlier this week stated its intention to defer its decisions on athletics in the upcoming school year to state agencies, including the IDPH. In the fall, the IESA contests junior-high golf, softball, baseball, cross country and girls basketball.

The organization went on to state its member schools can expect a decision by July 24.

“Our goal is to return to play but as an education-based organization, we must always take into account the health, safety, and well-being of students,” read the statement.

“Because of the ever-changing landscape, the IESA Board simply felt that until we receive answers, it would not be prudent at this time to make a decision to cancel fall activities knowing that a decision

Legalized marijuana sales near $240 million

By JERRY NOWICKI Capitol News Illinois Since January, Illinois residents and visitors have spent nearly $240 million on legalized recreational marijuana, producing $52 million in state revenue, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Of that, $34.7 million came from excise taxes, while $18 million came from sales taxes.

Per the law, 8 percent of that revenue will be shared with local governments, while the Illinois Department of Revenue estimates $25.9

The R3 program on Tuesday announced $31.5 million in grant opportunities to organizations

working in historically underserved communities across Illinois.

“Illinois has done more to put justice and equity at the forefront of this industry than any other state in the nation, and we’re ensuring that communities that have been hurt by the war on drugs have the opportunity to participate,” Gov. JB Pritzker said Tuesday in a news release.

The announcement signals progress for one of the legalization bill’s three main social equity measures.

Thursday and 3 p.m. last Friday, thieves broke into the back garage door at the Rock Falls American Legion, used mechanical tools to cut through to the room where the safe was – the 5-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide, 2-foot deep concrete-lined safe – and took it out the way they came in, Post 902 Cmdr. Keith Nichols said.

They didn’t take anything else.

the building, where the security cameras are. They didn’t even leave dolly tracks, Nichols said.

“It had to be at least four guys.

You can hear the pain and disappointment in Nichols’ voice.

“This was an inside job,” he said.

“Somehow or other, they knew there were no cameras back there. I don’t even know how they got it out of here without leaving dolly marks.

Whoever it was was very informed on how we do things.”

As much as the theft bothers Nichols, it’s the disrespect, the betrayal, that upsets him the most.

“These people didn’t hurt us, they just stabbed the backs of the guys who had died in the service of our county,” he said.

Sherilyn Sue Ganahl (Schwenneker) of Silvis peacefully passed away surrounded by family in Port Byron on July 12, 2020 after a short bout with cancer.

A memorial service for family and her closest friends was held Thursday, July 16.

She was born to Harry and Joanne Schwenneker April 25, 1959 in Geneseo.

She married Paul Ganahl in 1977 and had four children, Peter, Kelly (Corzine), Nathanael and Penny (Dennhardt). She also helped many of her nieces and nephews be born as a doula.

She had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed cooking, thrift shopping, music and camping. As a perennial goofball, she was always ready to dress up for a theme or to perform a family comedy skit. She enjoyed sewing clothes for and playing with her grandchildren, Taevah, Ruby, Ben, Canden, Sylvie and Julius. One of her best qualities was focusing on the important things in life, family, fun and lifelong friendships. She spent the last eight years of her life with her best friend, David Blackman.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, Dave, sister Marla Skelton, brother Rodney Schwenneker, her mother Joanne Friedrichsen and stepfather and best buddy Fred, many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

June E. Gorzney, 86, of Morrison, died Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at Morrison Community Hospital.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Due to the special circumstances of COVID, a private family Memorial Mass was held on Monday, July 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Morrison, with Rev. Father Slawomir Zimodro officiating. Interment was in Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established by the family.

June was born August 30, 1933 in Garden Plain, to Jason and Ella (Damhoff) Bennett. She attended Morrison grade schools and graduated from Morrison High School. On September 20, 1952 she married Clarence W. “Jr.” Gorzney in

Morrison. He died October 22, 1999. June was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Morrison. She and her husband loved to travel and after retirement they enjoyed trips to their cottage on Lake Superior in Michigan and RV trips to Arizona. June belonged to a card club for 49 years and enjoyed meeting daily with her friends for coffee. She also enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include three daughters, Debra (Mark) Merritt of Dixon, Marie (Dave) Tyler of Fulton and Carol (Dale) Gustafson of Castle Rock, CO; 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; one sister, Belle Claudon; one brother, John Bennett.

Mervin Paul Hannis was born Aug. 20, 1938, above the general store in Spring Hill, the son of Esther (Perkins) and Donovan Miles Hannis. He was raised in Portland Township and attended Burke and Spring Hill schools. He was graduated from Erie High School in 1956. On Feb. 2, 1957, he was married to Judy Ann Weber at the Erie Christian Church.

He worked at the East Moline Works of International Harvester, starting as an apprentice toolmaker and retiring as a tool room supervisor. He later worked for Logical Technology in Peoria. He was a member of the Erie Masonic Lodge AF&AM. Mr. Hannis enjoyed his garden and working outdoors, and was a Whiteside County Master Gardener. As a young man he assisted with the family Christmas tree farm in Portland Township, and in retirement he and his wife spent their holiday seasons helping at Runyan’s Country Tree Farm in Clio, Michigan.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; a daughter, Amy Wynn of Friday Harbor, WA; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Caroline Hannis of Morris; a son and son-in-law, Donovan W. Hannis and John Eide of Waianae, Hawaii; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister,

Mary G. “Deane” Halpin, 102, formerly of Reddick, died July 8, 2020 at Evenglow Lodge in Pontiac, where she had been a resident since 2010.

Deane was born June 27, 1918 near Campus, the daughter of Leo and Rosalie (Mowry) Johnson. She married James E. Halpin in Campus on December 31, 1947.

He preceded her in death on June 21, 1998.

Deane attended the Sacred Heart Convent School in Campus, and was believed to be the last surviving student from this school, which closed in 1930. She later attended the rural McGrath school and graduated from Reddick Community High School in 1936. She earned a twoyear teaching degree from Illinois State Normal University in 1938. She taught in the one-room Gifford and Southcomb schools in Norton and Broughton Townships from 1938 to 1945. She later worked at Honegger Feeds, Fairbury and as a bookkeeper for her husband’s Standard Oil bulk delivery business in Reddick.

Deane was a member of St, Mary’s Catholic Church, Reddick and was the primary organist there for 60 years (1950-2010). She was a violinist and a cheerleader in high school, played the organ and piano, and was a member of The Bonnie Belles of Harmony singing group in Kankakee. She and her husband enjoyed dancing, and were members of the Cosmo Dance Club. She played golf, bowled in leagues and enjoyed watching her children’s and grandchildren’s sports activities. In her later years, she volunteered at Reddick Elementary School, with the quilting group at St. Peter’s, Dwight and as an organist for the Dwight Heritage Health Center. She and her hus-

Clarence R. Harridge, 88, of Morrison, died Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna.

A private family funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Morrison with Rev. Dick Adams officiating. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, July 17, at the First Baptist Church. Interment was at the Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton. Clarence was born July 13, 1932, in Whiteside County, to John B. and Susie L. (Van Doren) Harridge. He was educated in the rural Whiteside County grade schools. Clarence married Ruby F. Roggendorf on April 11, 1951, in Morrison. She died February 15, 1971. He then married Carol A. Krongard on June 10, 1972, in Morrison. Clarence was engaged in farming in the rural Morrison area.

While farming, he also was employed by International Harvester in East Moline, retiring in 1982.

Clarence was a 69 year member of the First Baptist Church in Morrison where he served as deacon and was active in the Macedonia Program Ministries. He also was a member of the Morrison Lions Club. Clarence raised, bred, and raced harness horses.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; two daughters, Susan (Steve) Kammerer of Prophetstown and June Fowler of Morrison; two sons, Richard (Merri) Harridge and Doug Harridge both of Morrison; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister-in-law, Mary Leeper of Clinton, IA; and one brother-in-law, Dick (Jane) Krongard of West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby; one son, Mark Harridge; six sisters, Mary Spangler, Ruby Grady, Dorothy Schaver, Katherine Roete, Alice Leahy, and Frances Fredericks; two brothers, Paul and John Harridge.

Jessica was born January 6, 1999, in Clinton, Iowa, to Michael James and Christine Kay (Wilkens) Todd. She attended Morrison schools and was a graduate of Penn Foster. Jessica married Anthony Lee Schminkey on March 7, in Chicago.

Jessica enjoyed swimming on the Morrison Seahorse Swim team and playing trombone. She had a huge crush on Ryan Reynolds, enjoyed traveling, and sloths.

Her favorite thing to do was spending time with her friends.

David Stuart, age 84, of rural Morrison and his sister Katheryn, age 81, were listed in satisfactory condition at Mercy Hospital, after being shot and robbed at their home.

Two men armed with a knife and a pistol entered the home and bound the couple to a chair with heavy tape and shot them. Then ransacked the home, taking an undetermined amount of money.

Miss Charm Bach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bach, was crowned Miss Flame of 1980. Runner up is Miss Denise Wiersema, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Wiersema. Miss Spark was Lisa Ann Letcher daughter of Diane Letcher.

Harrison, MD Lewy Body Dementia is a special type of dementia that is related to Parkinson’s by a type of pathology of damage done to a certain part of the brain.Both of these conditions may eventually have impairment of cognition of thinking, memory, movement disturbances, and autonomic control issues like bladder, bowel and blood pressure and sleep disturbances as well as psychiatric problems. These conditions differ substantially from Alzheimer’s disease.

Executive function may be an early skill that is lost, as reflected in decreased ability to organize, plan or prepare for future events.

Mental flexibility may be diminished. This type of function relies one to multitask when attention needs to be shifted.

This area is also responsible for triggering the appropriate social response in a situation. It may give the appearance of a brain lock process when an affected individual starts a single task and unable to complete that because of the organization.

Also, social interactions may be compromised, leading to challenges in picking up nonverbal cues such as facial gestures, body language or voice changes. People who were previously laid back may sometimes become impatient and impulsive.

Other individuals may have somewhat the opposite and have an apathetic type of response. Further cognitive measures may be found on such items as new difficult reading a map, blueprints and the like. A unique feature in Lewy Body Dementia is the fluctuation in mental clarity. Such individuals may have alert and lucid portions for a few hours and then be significantly confused several hours later.

Hallucinations may occur, such as hearing voices and seeing things that are not there.

These may occur without the presence of any medicine, though sometimes may aggravate them.

Such individuals may also be paranoid of delusions and have false beliefs.

Sleep disturbances are common, including insomnia and daytime drowsiness. These are felt to result

from disturbed sleep architecture.

Psychiatric issues are also common, but often treatable. This may include depression, anxiety, and the dementia that may accompany Parkinson’s disease later on. Bladder and bowel disturbance may accompany either situation.

To make the diagnosis, the clinician will mostly do a history and physical. There may be a few simple tests performed, but many do not feel they add anything, such as CAT scans, MRI’s, etc. As to treatment, there is only symptomatic treatment for the dementia and behavior related measures. Some of the treatments seemingly make the condition worse at times.

The motor elements that are connected with the Parkinson’s portion may be helpful to a degree or the portion that is directly related to the Parkinson’s. However, some of these medicines may aggravate the mental status and behavioral conditions associated with these conditions.

Community helps build playground for students

The months of planning and anticipating the new playground at the Futon Elementary School finally is coming to fruition.

There was excitement in the air on July 10 and 11 as the over 30 volunteers gathered to assist the NuToys experts in assembling the equipment.

The location was professionally readied by Spencer Excavating before the many volunteers arrived to assist the FES PTO project. “A real example of what the Steamer Nation can accomplish” stated Principal Jeff Hoese.

The project was funded by the efforts of the PTO with assistance from applied for grants with the final tab exceeded $150,000. A true accomplishment of a group effort by the Steamer Nation.

The unique equipment is an all inclusive, sensory and handicap accessible playground with a poured rubber surface. This one of a kind park offers safe, fun and challenging entertainment for all elementary aged students.

ORDINANCE NO. 2020-03 AN ORDINANCE REQUIRING PERMIT FOR THE LOCATION, CONSTRUCTION AND USE OF A WIRELESS COMMUNICATION FACILITY. WHEREAS, increased demand for cellular communications may result in the need for addition wireless communication facilities (including cellular towers) within the Village of Cordova; and WHEREAS, it is necessary for the public welfare to regulate the location, construction and use of such facilities within the Village; and WHEREAS, the local regulation of such facilities is subject to State and Federal regulations, which must be incorporated into the rules and procedures of the Village relating to Wireless Communication Facilities; NOW THEREFORE, Be and it is ordained by the President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Cordova, Rock Island County, Illinois as follows: SECTION 1. No person shall install, operate, construct, or maintain, or cause to be installed, operated, constructed or maintained a Wireless Communication Facility or antenna array within the corporate boundaries of the Village, unless and until such person receives a Tower Use Permit issued by the Village.

SECTION 2. No Tower Use Permit shall be issued by the Village for a period of 90 days from and after the date of passage of this Ordinance, so that this Ordinance may be amended to provide rules and procedures for obtaining a Tower Use Permit.

SECTION 3. Any existing Wireless Communication Facilities within the Village on the date of passage of this Ordinance shall be exempt from the permit requirements imposed by this ordinance.

SECTION 4. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are repealed insofar as they so conflict.

SECTION 5. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect after passage and published as provided by law.
