Group is making sure kids have healthy meals Nine area businesses are joining forces to help make sure the children in the Fulton area enjoy healthy meals this summer.

NelsonCorp Wealth Management, Citizens First Bank, First Central State Bank, Clinton National Bank, Central Bank Illinois, Ascentra Credit Union, First Wealth Financial Group, and individual advisors and staff at NelsonCorp and NelsonCorp Tax Solutions started the effort about a month ago when NelsonCorp President & CEO, David Nelson saw the news reports that children without access to school lunches, will not eat on a regular basis.

It was at that time that he expressed his goal of wanting to help the children in the area during the COVID-19 crisis.

He realized the need is significant and knowing that we live in a caring and committed community, NelsonCorp reached out to other financial institutions and advisors.

As information about the need for assistance grew, several gladly came on board, all of them eager to help the children in the area in a time of crisis for many families.

“It’s important for the major financial institutions in our area to step up and lead by example. This is the first step; we are prepared to do more,” Nelson said.

The local school districts continued to provide meals after the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to go to online learning and will continue to do so this summer at distribution sites.

As organizers from NelsonCorp continued to research the food security issue in the community, they found that another barrier for some families is transportation to the designated sites.

It was discovered that a Clinton PTA member had been delivering lunches daily to children who could not make it to the lunch distribution sites. This volunteer’s goal was to continue assisting through the summer months.

“First Central State Bank is proud to team with area organizations to help families in need this summer. We have long supported our school district and its effort to help battle hunger in our local communities. We appreciate the efforts already completed with this program and look forward to what can be done in the future,” said First Central State Bank Senior Vice President Paul Mulholland.

Fulton volunteers have been providing 5 lunches a week to over 350 children. They also have distribution sites; one at the middle school, one at the trailer park, and one in Albany.

They would normally not go through the summer, but this year they plan to continue their program in June and July.

“Central Bank understands the realities our customers and communities are facing during these unprecedented times. We believe our role as a community bank is to focus on providing support in many forms, in the communities in which we live and work. The effort shown by volunteers who are working to help provide summer lunches to the children in our area is another example of the caring spirit that we are proud to support and we give our sincere thanks to those making it happen,” said Karrie Kenney, Assistant Vice President for Central Bank in Fulton.

Yet another local program, Backpack Buddies, provides weekend lunches to children throughout the school year.

That program will be starting again in August. It provides weekend lunches to more than 180 students every week.

Funds will also be distributed to this program.

“We are proud to be a member of the group helping to support area groups, so they can continue to provide healthy lunches to children facing hardships during this challenging time. Helping is at the core of being a strong community bank,” said Jenny Boysen, Co-Pres-

ident of Clinton National Bank.

“The effects of COVID19 have had a tremendous impact on families in our area, food insecurity is one. It is an honor to support the lunch programs put together by people who not only saw a need but decided to make difference,” said Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer of Ascentra Credit Union, Jennifer Naeve.

Program Details Clinton/Camanche

The summer lunch program for Clinton and Camanche students will start June 3rd at Jefferson and Eagle Heights.

This will be the grab and go style until at least June 30. Officials will then decide on if it is safe to serve lunches inside schools or continue with grab and go For more information call Jennifer Austin at 563-503-0859.

After 50 years on Main Street, Port Byron’s only barber, Bob Pifkin, will retire June 30. He is currently located at the Hair Shop, 101 N. Main St. Bob grew up in Paw Paw. After his 1969 high school graduation, he moved to Silvis to attend Lincoln Barber College in East Moline. After graduating, Bob began his career in March 1970 as an apprentice to Bob Wainwright at Wainwright’s Barber Shop on Main Street in Port Byron. Pifkin assumed ownership of the shop when Wainwright moved on to full-time real estate sales.

Barbering has been good to Bob. He made Port Byron his home along with his wife, Charlotte, and their three sons (now grown with families of their own).

As you can well imagine, hair styles have undergone many changes, and Bob kept up with current trends throughout his 50 year career.

Bob has many customer families - adults, children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. Bob also offers mobile barbering, going to nursing homes, hospitals, and homebound customers. Bob will continue to offer mobile services after retirement.

Over the years, Bob has met people from all walks of life and made many good friends through the barber shop. Although he will miss his customers, Bob is looking forward to an enjoyable retirement and spending time with his family and grandkids, as well as traveling.

Bob’s final day at the barber shop is June 27, so be sure to stop in and wish him well. Bob thanks everyone for their loyalty over these many many years.

Iowa women arrested in equestrian center theft $10,000 worth of equipment taken in May 31 break in

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@shawmedia.com MORRISON – Police say two Iowa women stole thousands of dollars in tack from a horse therapy group that helps people with disabilities.

Krista P. Godat, 45, of Clinton, was arrested Thursday and Jolene L. Decker, 55, of Camanche, was arrested Friday by Morrison police.

Godat is charged with burglary, which carries 3 to 7 years in prison, and theft, which carries 2 to 5 years. In a separate but related case, she also is charged with possession of less than 5 grams of meth, also punishable by 2 to 5 years.

She is being held on $75,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing June 15.

Decker, whose case was not yet available in online records Friday, preliminarily was charged with two counts of burglary and one of theft. She is free on a recognizance bond, jail records show.

The two are accused of stealing $10,000 in tack from the nonprofit White Oaks Therapeutic Equestrian Center’s barn at the Whiteside County fairgrounds in Morrison sometime after 6 p.m.

Most of the stolen items, which included saddles and saddle racks, were recovered, Morrison police said.

Before the arrests, a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to replace the equipment raised more than $11,000 by the time it was closed Saturday.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges may be filed.

“We have worked very hard over several years to acquire nice equipment for the riders in our program, whether it be working to find item donors or fundraising and grant writing to be able to buy new, and with everything that is now gone, I am heartbroken to announce that our ability to operate remains uncertain at this time,” according to the statement from White Oaks.

Items taken include 10 Circle Y flex tree western saddles with safety stirrups, five new western saddle pads, several western girths, cordless Wahl clippers, several sets of reins, and two 3-tier saddle racks.

The center was scheduled to start its summer program June 16.

ROAD WORK Rt. 84 Closure at Fulton Illinois 84, just south of US 30, will be closed to all through traffic from Monday, June 15 through Friday, June 19.

The closure will allow the Union Pacific (UP) Railroad to remove and replace the north crossing located in the area commonly known as “East Clinton”.

To allow continued traffic movement, a detour will be posted utilizing US 30,

Dakin Road, and Ward Road.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area.

The ramp at US 30 connector carrying US 30 eastbound to I-88 eastbound, 1 mile south of the Walmart Distribution Center in Whiteside County will be closed Monday, June 8, and will re-open on Friday, June 12. IDOT workers will be repairing the bridge deck over I-88.

Elks offer free children’s podiatry clinic at MCH Illinois Elks Children’s Care Corporation in cooperation with Northwest District Elks Lodges will sponsor a free children’s podiatry assessment clinic on Thursday, June 25, at Morrison Family Care Clinic, located at 303 N. Jackson Street, Morrison with Dr. David Yeager as the clinician in charge.

The clinic starts at 8 a.m. and is by appointment only. To make an appointment call the Illinois Elks Children’s Care office at 1-800-2720074 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

There are no charges for any services at this clinic.

No medical referral is necessary for the clinic but physicians are welcome to refer patients to the clinic for a specific reason or second opinion. School nurses are welcome to refer children and families to the clinic.

COVID-19 TESTING State opens COVID-19 testing for all

The State of Illinois is opening its community-based testing sites to anyone to get tested, regardless of symptoms or other criteria. As we move through the Restore Illinois plan, and into a full reopening of the state, testing will be crucial to identifying new cases and taking immediate action to prevent additional spread.

The Elks Organization has been working with physically challenged children since 1928 and this is one of the 16 clinic locations throughout Illinois.

The clinic is an ideal time to have a child reviewed for bone and joint development. If your child has feet pointing inward or outward or complains of foot pain they can be seen at this clinic. There is no charge for any diagnostic services at this clinic.

The Elks will provide financial assistance to the best of their ability for children needing further treatment or specialty equipment when the family lacks sufficient resources to do so. In the past, the Elks have purchased therapy services, corrective shoes, braces, wheelchairs and augmentative communication devices to help children overcome a variety of physical challenges.

He has one younger sister who is also a caregiver, and a girlfriend who lives in New Hampshire. He worked as a Delivery Lead and Maintenance Director for Godfather’s Pizza. Bill would like to one day open his own diner and restaurant maintenance service.

His favorite Winning Wheels activities are using the computer lab and going on outings, specifically where he can eat at a new restaurant. His hobbies are welding and airbrushing, and traveling to Wisconsin for annual fishing trips.

Bill’s favorite food is pizza, and his favorite movie is “anything Sci-Fi.” He is nicknamed “MacGyver” because of his good problem solving skills.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is recommending anyone

who has recently been part of a mass gathering, including rallies and protests over the past week, get tested for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

“As people gather in large crowds with varying degrees of social distancing, there is cause for concern about COVID-19 spread and outbreaks, especially if masks were not worn universally,” said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike.

“I urge anyone who recently attended a rally, protest, or other mass gathering to get tested for COVID-19 so we can

identify any cases early. We recommend testing 5-7 days after participating in large group rallies, or immediately if symptoms develop. If there are known cases, we can make sure those people are quarantined and not exposing other individuals.”

The virus has been found to spread between people up to a couple days before people start showing symptoms.

Because of this, the number of people an infected person could unknowingly expose can be exponential.

USDA REPORT

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has announced the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) has already approved more than $545 million in payments to producers who have applied for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program.

FSA began taking applications May 26 and the agency has received over 86,000 applications for this important relief program.

“The coronavirus has hurt America’s farmers, ranchers, and producers, and these payments directed by President Trump will help this critical industry weather the current pandemic so they can continue to plant and harvest a safe, nutritious, and affordable crop for the American people,” said Perdue in a press release.

“We have tools and resources available to help producers under-

payments and will release further updates each Monday at 2:00pm ET. The report can be viewed at farmers.gov/ cfap.

FSA will accept applications through Aug. 28.

Through CFAP, USDA is making available $16 billion in financial assistance to producers of agricultural commodities who have suffered a five-percent-or-greater price decline due to COVID-19 and face additional significant marketing costs as a result of lower demand, surplus production, and disruptions to shipping patterns and the orderly marketing

of commodities.

In order to do this, producers will receive 80 percent of their maximum total payment upon approval of the application.

The remaining portion of the payment, not to exceed the payment limit, will be paid at a later date nationwide, as funds remain available.

Joan was born May 4, 1933, in Fulton, to Donald and Nellie (Buikema) DeWeerdt. She was educated in the Fulton grade schools and was a graduate of Morrison High School in Morrison.

Joan married Robert “Heusie” W. Heusinkveld on March 11, 1954, in Fulton. He died on December 24, 2017.

Joan worked as a cold control operator at General Electric in Morrison. She also worked at Kem Apparel, a women’s dress shop, in Morrison.

Most recently she was employed at Fitzgerald’s Pharmacy, Morrison, as a clerk. Joan was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison.

She enjoyed bird watching and was an avid bargain shopper. Joan’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her family.

Survivors include one daughter, Cindy (Richard) Wolf of Erie; two sons, Gary (Deb) Heusinkveld and Jon (Linda Brandon) Heusinkveld both of Morrison; six grandchildren, Michael (Carolyne) Wolf, Matthew (Samantha) Wolf, Amanda (Michael) Tummillo, Adam Heusinkveld, Cassandra (Dustin Belt) Heusinkveld, and Megan (Tom) Burns; five great-grandchildren; Lillian, Olivia, and Lucas Wolf; Nick and Alex Tummillo and one sister, Donna Mae Dykstra of Clinton, IA. She was preceded in death by her

LINDA A. HIGGINS

Linda A. Higgins, 74 of Fulton, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Mercy One Hospital.

In following Linda’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded. A gathering of family and friends took place from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at the Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, Iowa.

A private family Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27 at Immaculate Conception Church in Fulton.

Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, Fulton.

Memorials in Linda’s name may be made to Immaculate Conception Church.

Linda was born in Clinton, Iowa on January 23, 1946, the daughter of Edmund and Helen (Nelson) Krogman.

She attended St. Mary’s School where she was active in chorus and received awards for her artwork.

While in high school she belonged to the Clinton Nee-Hi Drum and Bugle Corps. She married Wayne Higgins on June 15, 1963 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Linda was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She was a homemaker and had worked for a time at Country Orchids.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and new great granddaughter, doing word puzzles and watching TV game shows.

She would make Christmas tree ornaments every year for her family.

Linda was well known for the artwork and statue restoration she did for the churches in Fulton and Albany, and the public as well.

Henry B. James, 89, of Morrison, died Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling.

There will be a private family visitation and funeral service.

Interment will be at the Lyndon Township Cemetery in Lyndon.

The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Henry was born December 24, 1930 in Morrison, to Clyde and Cora (Hussey) James. He was educated in the rural Whiteside County schools.

On May 2, 1954 he married Esselene M. Moothart in Morrison. She died May 14, 1990.

Henry served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He worked construction for several local companies and also laid carpeting as a side job.

He enjoyed making stained glass and loved feeding and watching his birds.

BY DR. STEPHEN HARRISON, MD Baking soda is a substance that the body produces for its very critical functions. Baking soda is an underrated anti-inflammatory agent.

Furthermore it helps to detoxify a variety of substances in the blood, not just your refrigerator. Because it is a strong base, it is a major buffer against acids in the blood.

These acids arrive in many former including our food and other chemical substances. In their acidic state they do far more damage. The PH changes it effects are instantaneous.

Conditions that thrive in the acid environment include acne, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, food allergies, joint pains, low energy headaches, panic attacks, premenstrual

cramping, cold sores, depression, insomnia, migraines, skin conditions and others.

More advanced conditions may include Crohn’s disease, MS, Rheumatoid arthritis, Hodgkin’s , leukemia. Lupus, TB, and others. Infections like fungus and viruses thrive in acidic environments.

Before we endorse off label treatment randomly with baking soda, let us look where it is already employed in mainstream medicine.

These measures include dialysis, certain liver diseases, some vascular or circulation operations. An off label use has been theorized to help diabetes.

Sodium bicarbonate has been used for cardiopulmonary resuscitation in times past. It has long been recog-

nized as a treatment for sour stomach in both mainstream and complimentary medicine.

There are a variety of ways that sodium bicarbonate can be administered including by IV in the medical arena. Some people bathe in it to help their skin. It can be quite effective as a toothpaste by itself or after your standard toothpaste as a rinse.

Of course the main use is by mouth.

One recommendation is to use 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon in 4 ounces of water 4- 6 times a day. The maximum intake of sodium bicarbonate would generally be 1.5 to 2 teaspoons per day.

There are dangers to baking sodium. A small percentage of people will be salt sensitive and therefore need to watch carefully under medical supervision.

Some people will become overly alkaline in their blood with this treatment though frankly that is rare.

Checking urine PH can give some nice clues as to your safe range. People with advanced kidney conditions need precautions.

Taking baking sodium should not be used as a substitute for healthy nutrition and breathing which can both heavily influence the PH. Many people have tried to approximate the alkaline diet by using alkaline water.

Alkaline water is not the same as the preferred process of water with alkalinity.

Obviously the price of baking sodium makes this an inexpensive opportunity for many to check this out themselves.

Town of Fulton created third precinct in 1960 60 Years - June 16, 1960

A third precinct for the Town of Fulton was created by the Board of Supervisors at Morrison. The additional precinct was made necessary by the steadily increasing number of voters registered in the two former precincts and an excessive amount of time was required for tabulating the votes.

Two bus loads of Girl Scouts left for a pilgrimage to Springfield.

They visited the capitol building and other places of interest in Springfield. 50 Years - June 17, 1970 Marty Marx of Fulton and Gordon Schaver of Albany will attend the American Legion Premier Boys State. It will be held at the state fair grounds in Springfield.

Barbara Van Zuiden will leave to spend two months in Antwerp, Belgium and learn the customs of their land. Her trip is made possible through the Youth for Understanding program and sponsored by the local American Field Service Chapter.

40 Years - June 11, 1980

Two bikers stopped in Fulton for a break from their marathon trip from St. Louis to Canada. The couple left May 24 from St. Louis and plan to be

in Canada July 1. Traveling north on Route 84 they stopped at Fulton Recreational Lanes for lunch.

Four young men from Fulton High School attended Boys State at Eastern Illinois University at Charleston. Attending included: Brian Holcomb, Luke Vander Bleek, Scott Sikkema, and Wayne Kramer. The group is sponsored by Fulton American Legion. 30 Years - June 13, 1990 It seems certain now that the Moring Disposal Service will be the contract hauler of Fulton garbage beginning July 1. Changes on September 1 residents will be required to separate recyclable materials.

The kindergarten students at Fulton Elementary took an end of the year field trip to Giants Stadium in

Clinton, IA. They had a picnic lunch and then got to tour the stadium.

20 Years - June 14, 2000

Carolyn Cramer is the new owner of the cafe in downtown Fulton at 1007 Fourth Street. The cafe was formerly called Early Bird Cafe.

Carolyn is changing the name to Carolyn’s Kitchen because she wanted to feature home-style cooking. Her mother Darlene Weltzin also joined the firm to become the cook.

Joan Boyer, Fulton’s City Administer invited a cross section of people to City Hall to explain Fulton’s newest grant, an $80,000 Rebuild American program that is sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy. Fulton is only one of six in the State of Illinois to receive such a grant.

Arrests: On Friday, May 22,, at approximately 10:05 pm, Morrison Police responded to 408 East Lincolnway, Morrison regarding an emergency 911 call made from this location. As a result of further investigation, Kenneth G. Kradle, age 39 of Morrison, was arrested and charged with Domestic Battery. Kradle was transported to the Whiteside County Jail.

On Saturday, May 30, at approximately 4:38 pm, Morrison Police responded to the area of 631 East Lincolnway, Morrison regarding an emergency 911 call of disorderly conduct. As a result of further investigation, Anthony M. Heide, age 42 of Walnut, was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct. Heide was transported to the Whiteside County Jail.

On Tuesday, June 2,, at approximately 8:21 am, Morrison Police responded to 205 West South Street, Morrison regarding a complaint of trespassing and a cat running at large. As a result of the investigation, Joshua S. Myatt, age 47 of Morrison, was charged with Animal (cat) Running at Large (ordinance citation) and Criminal Trespass to Real Property (Class B Misdemeanor).
