Jim Valk of Fulton had to wait more than a year to share his knowledge of how de Immigrant windmill makes grain into flour.

“This is only the second day we’ve been open since 2019,” said Valk on Sunday afternoon. “We’ve had 25-30 people stop by.”

The 100-foot Dutch windmill was manufactured and pre-assembled in the Netherlands. It was assembled and installed by Dutch craftsmen and was dedicated during Fulton’s Dutch Days Festival in 2000.

Rick Daehler, head miller, said Sunday’s “Blessing of the Bikes” also helped bring people to de Immigrant.

“We’ve been getting a few from there,” he said referring to Fulton’s downtown.

Daehler and Valk are two of about twodozen local residents who volunteer at the popular attraction. Some help run the mill and others give tours and work in the gift shop.

“One day, before the pandemic, we had people from 5 different countries in here,” he said as he stood in the center of the windmill’s center.

The windmill will be open on weekends.

“We’re just open on weekends for now and we’ll see how it goes,” Daehler said.

The windmill stands on the flood control dike on the east bank of the Mississippi River and is fully operational with a head that can turn and the sails that move by wind power. The mill is also fully functional with a set of blue basalt millstones that can produce a variety of flours.

Stone-ground buckwheat, corn, rye, and wheat flours are all manufactured at the windmill and are for sale in the gift shop at the Windmill Cultural Center, located nearby, Milling will depend on the weather. “We need at least 10 mph wind to run, 15 mph is even better,” Daehler said.

The Windmill Cultural Center, located just east of the windmill, was dedicated April 2010 and also offers a gift shop where visitors can purchase fresh stone-ground flour, Delft pottery, and other souvenirs.

And that’s where the Gorbach family from Milan was shopping on Sunday.

“It’s wonderful to get out and have summer kind of returning to normal,” said Danielle who watched as her husband Alexander and sons Matt and Nick made purchases.

Picnic in the Park is June 15 Fulton Kiwanis Club members thought the community deserved a great night out, so they are inviting residents to a special event at a city park.

A “Totally Tuesday Picnic in the Park” is planned for Tuesday, June 15, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 10th Avenue Park .

The menu will include burgers, hot dogs,

chips and a drink, all provided by the Fulton Kiwanis Club. The food will be prepared by the Fulton Meat Market.

There will be games with prizes, and live entertainment from 3 On The Tree.

Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs. The Kiwanis Club’s tent will be set up.

The windmill and cultural center are open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m.

Admission to both the windmill and the cultural center are free, but donations are appreciated.

POLICE/FIRE REPORTS Morrison police Arrests

On Friday, May 28, about 11:40 p.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Amanda J. Daniels, 38, of Galesburg, in the 600 block of Portland Avenue for a registration violation. As a result of the stop, Morrison police arrested and charged Daniels with driving while license suspended and pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Henry County charging Daniels with failure to appear – driving while license suspended. Daniels posted the required bond and was released.

On Sunday, May 30, about 12:08 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Melvin T. Hill, 32, of Chicago, in the 400 block of East Lincolnway for a moving violation. As a result of the stop, Morrison police issued Hill a citation for no valid driver’s license and arrested Hill pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Cook County charging Hill with violation of probation. Hill was taken to the Whiteside County Jail.

On Monday, May 31, about 5:15 a.m., Morrison police responded to Casey’s General Store, 602 East Lincolnway, regarding a report of a suspicious vehicle. As a result of the investigation, Morrison police

On Friday, June 4, about 6 a.m., Morrison police arrested Kathleen M. Dunmore, 33, of Morrison, pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Whiteside County charging Dunmore with failure to appear – driving while license suspended. Dunmore was taken to the Whiteside County Jail.

Volunteers with the Rapids City Fire Protection District and Port Byron Fire Department responded to 46 calls for assistance in May. A breakdown of those calls: Village of Rapids City – Five EMS calls and one structure fire.

Village of Port Byron – Eleven EMS calls and one downed power lines.

Fire Protection District (rural) – Sixteen EMS calls, five traffic accidents, one semitrailer fire and one fire alarm.

Automatic aid was given to the Hillsdale Fire Department for one traffic accident, one structure fire and one fire alarm. Mutual aid was given to the Cordova Fire Department for one structure fire and one seawall fire.

Morrison citywide garage sale set for June 11 and 12 The Morrison citywide garage sale is scheduled for Friday, June 11, and Saturday, June 12, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There are more than 35 sales listed in the Morrison area.

John Crady 5K Memorial Run to take place June 19

The first John Crady 5K Memorial Run will be Saturday, June 19, at Eclipse Square Park in Prophetstown.

A 1-mile Fun Run for youth is scheduled for 8 a.m., with the 5K following at 9 a.m. Each race will begin and end at Eclipse Square.

There will be water stations at every mile.

Entry fees are $10 for the Fun Run and $20 for the 5K. There will be age-group awards and an awards for the overall winner.

The commemorative T-shirt was designed

by Crady’s grandson, Shane Crady of Colorado. It feature the race logo, which was designed by Crady’s nephew, Colby Richmond of Morrison.

Proceeds will go to the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers golf and cross country teams.

Main Avenue in Cordova was hopping on Saturday, June 5 as Cordova District Library’s annual Paint the Road returned after a one-year hiatus due to Covid-19. With two separate painting sessions and 140 pre-painted white squares and circles, the toddlers, tweens, teens, and adults had an hour to get creative and make their mark on the road along the river, which will remain until next year’s event.

The library provided the brushes and paint, and the Cordova Fire Department treated the painters with Whitey’s ice cream shakes.

Calisa Steel of Erie has been named to the spring 2021 dean’s list at Culver-Stockton College.

Completing academic coursework with a high grade-point average between 3.5 and 3.99 on a 4.0 scale while enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours containing no grade lower than a C resulted in the prestigious honor.

Hart named to Carl Sandburg dean’s list

Emma Hart of Port Byron was named to Carl Sandburg College’s dean’s list for the 2021 spring semester.

To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn a grade-point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale).

McCoy named to Iowa State’s dean’s list

More than 10,500 Iowa State University students, including Kaleb Michael McCoy of Morrison who is studying mechanical engineering, were recognized for outstanding academic achievement by being named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list.

Students named to the dean’s list have earned a grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded coursework.

State of Grace, a Southern Gospel trio based in Sullivan, has been singing for almost 10 years. Their greatest joy is to be able to share the gospel through songs and testimonies. Iowa State University recognized 4,798 spring graduates May 7 and 8. Iowa State awarded 4,176 undergraduate degrees, 609 graduate degrees and 143 veterinary medicine degrees. Students had the opportunity to attend in-person ceremonies and celebrations at Hilton Coliseum and Jack Trice Stadium, which were livestreamed for those who preferred a virtual option.

Morrison graduates included Kyle McCoy, bachelor’s degree in accounting; and Megan Szabo, bachelor’s degree in apparel, merchandising and design.

Suarez on Washburn’s president’s list

Washburn University announced its president’s list honorees for the 2021 spring semester. Rebecca Suarez of Morrison was one of more than 600 students who qualified for the president’s list.

To qualify for the president’s list, a student must complete at least 12 graded credit hours and earn a semester grade-point average of 4.0.

Allison Winkel of Fulton, a graduate of Fulton High School majoring in music theatre, has been named to the dean’s list for the 2021 spring semester at Baldwin Wallace University.

Baldwin Wallace is located in Berea, Ohio, 12 miles from downtown Cleveland.

Local students graduate from Monmouth

On May 16, Monmouth College had an outdoor commencement ceremony, where Class of 2021 graduates were able to walk across the Wallace Hall stage and receive their diploma in front of a limited number of guests. Among the graduates were Jack Barnett, Blake Haas and Clayton Schulenberg, all of Port Byron.

It was a welcome sight at Dorrance Park in Port Byron last week as the summer baseball, softball, and t-ball games started for the season. Games will be held Monday - Thursday through July. The concession stands are also open, with hot food, sweet snacks, and cold drinks. The kids and coaches are excited to be back playing in the fields after URICRA had to cancel all sports last year due to Covid-19.

New board sworn in, plans announced for Cordova Day

Cordova’s newly elected officials took their Oath of Office at the meeting on Thursday, May 20.

Village President Jim Boone and trustees Tammy Havens, Jeff Claus, and Della Scott were sworn in by Village Clerk Melissa Bowman. Incumbents Boone and Scott have been on the board for four-year terms and Havens was appointed to the board two years ago. All were sworn in for a four-year term.

The board discussed plans for Cordova Day on Saturday, July 10, which will include a parade, fireworks at dusk, River Cities Rotary food stand, live music by Bibs & Boots, raffles, fundraiser activities, free child safety kits, and a K-9 demonstration by the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Department. New this year will be a car show, with participants registering the day of the event at the Cordova Civic Center.

Last year’s annual celebration

was cancelled due to Covid-19, so the board has been hard at work prepping for this year. “It’s been lots of work and planning, but it’s going to be a very exciting event,” said Boone.

In development updates, work continues at the 10th St. boat launch, with plans to survey property lines, build and install a new retaining wall on the east side to give more parking, and repair the road approach. At Legion’s Landing, IMEG Engineering has been getting the final specs together for bidding for new docks, landscaping, a parking lot, and a boat ramp.

In other updates: new playground mulch was recently delivered, and all the playgrounds were cleaned up; road and alley repairs with MFT, TIF, and streets and alley funds will start this summer after the IDOT gives approval; equipment was recently purchased to upgrade the lift stations; and the Finance committee is working to get CARES and Rebuild Illinois funds, and grants through Bi-State Regional Commission.

Prophetstown Police Department to host fishing derby June 19 at state park The Prophetstown Police Department’s annual Dick Brown Fishing Derby will take place Saturday, June 19, at Prophetstown State Park.

Parents must register their children at the park before the event.

This year, anglers will fish in three age groups in order to facilitate social

distancing. Fishing times are 8 to 9 a.m. for those zero to 6 years old; 9 to 10 a.m. for 7 to 10 years old; and 10 to 11 a.m. for 11 to 14 years old.

OBITUARIES ANTON ‘TONY’ B. MILDER JR. Born: June 18, 1929; Clinton, Iowa Died: May 31, 2021; Morrison

MORRISON – Anton “Tony” B. Milder Jr, 91, of Morrison, IL, died Monday, May 31, 2021, at his home.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m.Saturday, June 5, 2021, at the Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Ken Renkes will officiate. Interment will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery in Clinton, IA. Memorials have been established to the Morrison Fire Department and Morrison EMS. Tony was born June 18, 1929, in Clinton, IA, to Anton B. and Gladys V. (Williams) Milder Sr. He was a graduate of Clinton High School. He married Mona P. Tyra on September 22, 1972, at the First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown, IL. Tony worked

at General Electric in Morrison as a tool and die maker until retiring. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Morrison. Tony loved antique cars ,and served as president of the Double I Antique Car Club. He enjoyed swimming, boating, spending time on the Mississippi River, and traveling. Tony had a whole room in his home that he set up for his model trains.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mona of Morrison; two daughters, Toni Lynn (Michael) Oates of Waxhaw, NC and Caroline (Dave Kaup) Roach of Clinton, IA; one son, Steve (Sandy) Milder of Clinton, IA; seven grandchildren, Aidan and Dylan, Joe, Shawna, and Megan, and Marcus and Jason; two great grandchildren, Haley and Claire; three stepchildren, John, Teresa, and Linda; five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna (Curtis) Greenwalt of Bristol, IN, and Carol (John) Marshall of Springfield, OH; and one brother, Kenneth (Pat) Milder of Clinton, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cindy Levison; one step-

daughter, Mary Jane; two sisters, Luella Carter and Doris Milder; and three brothers, Robert Milder and twin brothers, Albert and Delbert in infancy.

Services were Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Church of the Cross - United Methodist Church, 22621 Rt. 2 & 92, Port Byron.

Burial was at Zuma Cemetery, Port Byron.

Keith was born May 19, 1932 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, the son of Wesley “Wes” and Gladys E. (Wake) Johnson. He graduated from Hillsdale High School, Hillsdale, IL, in 1949, Augustana College and then went on to receive his doctorate degree from the University of Iowa. He never married. He taught school for 16 years in the Geneseo School District. He enjoyed living in the same house since 1937, which was built by his great-great-grandfather. Keith was a longtime active member of Church of the Cross, Port Byron and was a member of the Masons. Keith was a world traveler and he loved the Cubs.

Keith is survived by many friends, who will miss him dearly. Keith will be remembered for his good nature, his many volunteer activities, and his delicious pies.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Lonnie.

eingles@shawmedia ROCK FALLS – A three-run first and a three-run second got Rock Falls going on Friday in the regional semifinal against Riverdale.

Some clutch relief work by Brady Richards and taking advantage of Rams mistakes for some insurance runs helped secure the Rockets’ 10-6 win over the Rams.

Richards came on in relief in the top of the sixth, with the Rams having already scored four runs in the inning off two different Rockets pitchers. He came on with two runners on base and a 3-2 count on Riverdale pitcher Aiden Nelson, and needed just one pitch to strike Nelson out to end the inning and strand those two Rams.

The Rockets (8-13-1) built a 10-2 lead heading into the top of the sixth, but the Rams were able to chip away.

Rock Falls starter Chase Chappell, having thrown 79 pitches through five innings, allowed an infield single to Jacob Griffin to lead off the sixth, then Bryce Ditto doubled and Trent Doty walked on four pitches.

That led to a pitching change,

bringing Dillon Schueler to the mound, but after a comebacker to the mound led to a force out at the plate for the first out, he walked the next two batters to force in a pair of runs, and two more scored on wild pitches. But Richards then worked out of that jam, stranding two of the eight runners Riverdale left on base in the game.

Riverdale finally broke through in the third, getting a walk and a double to open the inning and an RBI ground out and a sacrifice fly to bring both runs home.

The Rockets scored three runs in the first, loading the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single. But with one out, Victor Rivera grounded into a potential 4-6-3 double play.

He beat the throw to first, allowing Chase Chappell to score, and the throw was off the mark, allowing Gavin Sands to score.

Brady Richards then followed with an RBI single to drive in Rivera, facing a 1-2 count before a pitch that barely missed the plate for ball two, then lacing the next pitch the opposite way to left, where Doty dove for it but was unable to come up with the catch.

But Nelson settled in from there, eventually working 4 1/3 innings, striking out four, walking four, and allowing four runs.

“He’s our senior and he’s been our senior leader all year,” Peterson said. “I just wanted to give him a chance to bring us back, down 6-0, knowing that if it’s his last game, it’s his last chance to get the job done for us.”

Rock Falls had a chance to add to the lead in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with one out on a pair of infield singles and a hit batsman. But an infield fly and a grounder got Riverdale out of that threat.

Rock Falls added a run in the fourth when Luke Akerman scored on a Brady Richards groundout, then scored three in the fifth as Tyler Richards scored on a wild pitch, Sands beat a throw to the plate scoring from third on a grounder to short, and Rivera doubled off the fence in left-center to drive in Schueler.

With no tournament (and no season at all) in 2020 and a first-round exit in 2019, this is Rock Falls’ first postseason win since beating Dixon 3-2 in a regional semifinal in 2018.

For Shaw Media David Arney, a senior at Riverdale High School, has broken the school’s triple jump record that’s been on the books for 41 years.

Arney set the new record during a meet at Orion High School on May 26. The old record of 43 ft. 2 in. was set in 1980 by foreign exchange student Fagerhorn.

Arney holds the David Arney new record of 43 ft.

8.5 in. He also holds the school’s long jump record.

“It was nice to have a season this year and I was just trying to make the most of it. I honestly forgot about the record, so finding out I broke it was a great surprise,” he said of the accomplishment Arney was also on the football, basketball, and track teams while in high school. He’ll be going to St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA and will compete in track and field.

Riverdale bass team places fourth at state

On May 21 and 22, the Riverdale bass team competed in the IHSA State Bass Fishing finals on Lake Carlyle in Carlyle against 81 other teams. Riverdale finished in fourth for the tournament, the highest finish in program history.

The Rams’ team of Landon Dalaska, Brennan Franklin, Evan Verbeckmoes and Michael Benoit was able to punch its ticket to the state finals by winning the Mississippi River Sectional, which was May 6 on Pool 13 of the Mississippi River. The team put together a five fish limit of 17 pounds, 12 ounces, which was the largest weight in the entire state in the sectional tournaments. Jay Burggraf, the boat captain, said they “lost a couple of fish early but fortunately it didn’t cost the boys a chance at the state tournament.” Burggraf was able to keep the team focused on quality fish.

Head coach Jason Benoit and the team headed to Lake Carlyle on May 20 to pre-fish the lake. The team was able to put together a solid pattern on a lake that is notoriously difficult to fish. The team was able to find several fish in a couple of specific areas.

Michael Benoit and Dalaska started the first day by catching a couple of short fish. Dalaska put the first keeper in the boat around 9 a.m. The team moved through several productive areas, but the fish were not cooperating. At 11 a.m., the team only had one fish in the boat. In the afternoon, Franklin and Dalaska were able to catch two more legal but small fish. The team hooked a good fish around 1 p.m., but unfortunately it came unbuttoned before they could get a net under it.

“It was a little discouraging, but the boys did a great job of staying focused and concentrating on the next bite,” Jason Benoit said.

With less than an hour left, the team

caught its final fish of the day. After the first day, the team had four fish for a total of 4 pounds, 8 ounces, which had Riverdale in 16th place.

“This speaks to just how difficult of a fishery Carlyle can be,” Jason Benoit said.

Franklin and Dalaska started the second day by again putting a keeper fish in the boat by 9 a.m. The team rotated through its productive areas and was able to put two more small fish in the boat.

In the afternoon, Michael Benoit and Dalaska concentrated on filling the limit. They were able to boat a nice fish around noon.

One of the productive areas the boys had fished earlier was being fished by a crappie fisherman. “We waited around the area until the fisherman left, and we quickly moved to the area and immediately caught another nice fish,” Jason Benoit said.

Dalaska hooked the final fish – Riverdale’s biggest fish of the tournament – around 2:30 p.m. Dalaska and Michael Benoit did a nice job of working together to get the fish in the boat.

Led by Dalaska, Riverdale had the third-largest bag of the day at 9 pounds, 8 ounces for a two-day total of 14

pounds, 4 ounces. The effort put the team in first place for quite some time, but with four boats left to weigh in, Riverdale had to settle for fourth in the state.

“All the boys did a great job fishing hard on a difficult lake, giving themselves an opportunity to contend for the championship,” Jason Benoit said.

“Special recognition to Landon Dalaska

for fishing exceptionally.

“With several quality anglers still on the Riverdale bass team, the future looks bright.”

By TY REYNOLDS PROPHETSTOWN – All game long June 3, the Erie-Prophetstown softball team put pressure on Rock Falls with scoring chance after scoring chance.

Every time, the Rockets were up to the challenge – until the final inning.

After missing scoring opportunities in four of the first six innings, the Panthers finally broke through with a run on a walk-off suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 1-0 win in a Class 2A Prophetstown Regional semifinal.

“Early in that game, I took some chances, and it’s some of those as a coach that you end up hoping they don’t come back and bite you in the butt,” Erie-Prophetstown coach Kerrie Tenboer said. “At the end there, I called over Mya [Jones] and was thinking to myself, ‘How many chances have we had to score and we haven’t today?’ I just decided to switch it up there at the end.”

After Abby Whiles wiggled off the hook all game long, throwing up matching zeros with E-P pitcher Aylah Jones, the Panthers (17-5) used small ball to come up with the win.

Emma Davis led off the seventh with a walk, and moved to second on Jaden Johnson’s sacrifice bunt.

“I just needed to get on base. That was my only job,” Davis said. “I didn’t need to have a big hit. Just do something to get on base.”

The ball glanced off the glove of Rock Falls’ Zoe Morgan, putting runners on second and third with one out.

Tenboer called timeout and had a short conference with Mya Jones before her plate appearance.

“Coach pulled me over and basically said, ‘Second pitch, you’re doing a suicide squeeze,’” Mya Jones said. “So the

first pitch I was getting it in my head that we were doing the suicide squeeze, and I just was focused on getting the bunt down. I had to get it down and we’d win the game, so that’s all I was thinking about.

“My mindset was that if we got another chance to score [in the seventh inning], we’d get it done. I didn’t want Aylah to have to pitch another inning.”

After a first-pitch strike, Mya Jones laid down the bunt toward third base.

With Davis sprinting down the line toward the plate, Rock Falls’ Karli Fischbach charged and tried to scoop the ball with her glove to catcher Olivia Osborne, but it bounced off the edge of Fischbach’s glove and rolled away as Davis scored the winning run.

“I was just running as fast as I can,” Davis said. “Coach told me the pitch before that we were going to do it, and I just took off. It was really exciting when I slid across home plate.”

Before that play, it was a scoreless pitchers’ duel between Aylah Jones and Whiles. Jones struck out 13 and walked one in a one-hitter, throwing 67 of her 97 pitches for strikes. She worked 1-2-3 innings in the second, fourth and seventh, and allowed a runner to second base only three times. No Rockets player advanced to third. Nicolette Udell’s double to lead off the third was the only Rock Falls hit.

“Mostly screwball. That’s usually my go-to pitch,” Aylah Jones said about what was working best for her.

“Usually the screwball always throws them off because it moves around and is rising on them. Riseballs were working today, too. It seemed like they could never get around on it.”

“She’s been amazing all year, really strong for us, and she was on today,” Tenboer said. “She’s a workhorse, so she’s going to keep pushing through. She never lets down on us, so that’s great.”

Morrison’s Jordan Gallentine sweeps sprints with season-best times

By BRIAN WEIDMAN EDGINGTON – There was a new version of the Jordan Rules on display May 28 at the Class 1A Rockridge Girls Track and Field Sectional.

This version starred Jordan Gallentine, a Morrison senior who ruled the sprints – the last race in spectacular fashion.

Gallentine led a strong contingent of local athletes to the 1A state finals in Charleston.

The lone Morrison state qualifier, Gallentine was clocked at 12.9 seconds in the 100 and 59.45 in the 400. She capped her night by going 27.08 in the 200.

Each race was a season-best time.

“That was my goal, for sure, but I didn’t think that I would actually accomplish that goal,” Gallentine said of her sprint sweep. “I’m really proud of myself. I knew I had to trust my training

The 200 was particularly satisfying.

She trailed Amboy’s Lauren Althaus and Bureau Valley’s Kamryn Kolb before overtaking them down the stretch. Althaus (27.10) edged Kolb (27.11) for second place.

“I didn’t think I would get it at first,”

Gallentine said, “but my finish, I gave it all I could. I saw that I was moving past, so I just finished as hard as I could.”

Erie-Prophetstown finished the meet in style as the foursome of Dylan Chandler, Jade Nickerson, Kennedy Buck and Riley Packer won the 1,600 relay in 4:19.63. The victory sliced more than 11 seconds off their seed time.

“I think we all ran our best times,” Chandler said. “We all just really pushed it because of how bad we wanted it.”

Erie-Prophetstown’s Hayley Wuebben and Olivia Purvis each cleared 2.59 meters (8 feet, 6 inches) in the pole vault.

Wuebben, a junior, won a vault-off by clearing 2.75 meters (9 feet).

“This was my first year vaulting, and having Hayley was a big help,” said Purvis, a freshman.

Both are under the guidance of longtime vault coach Tom Unruh, who is retiring after this season.

Buck took second in the shot put at 10.97 meters. Packer took second in the 800 in 2:26.95.

The Panthers also were second in the 3,200 relay with a time of 11:19.17.

Fulton was runner-up in the 400 relay (52.87) and 800 relay (1:53.64) to earn state trips.

Erie-Prophetstown’s Aylah Jones struck out 15 batters, walking no one. Oregon’s Mia Trampel struck out 11.

Trampel’s 11th strikeout was the final out of the top of the seventh, ending it in a 2-0 Hawks’ win.

Oregon’s fifth-inning rally started with a strikeout as well.

Coming up to pinch hit in what was then a scoreless tie with one out in the fifth, Oregon’s Katelyn Bowers reached up to bunt a two-strike pitch up and out of the zone. She missed it, but so did Panthers catcher Mak Glassburn, allowing Bowers to race for first as the ball went back to the screen.

Bowers later stole second, and scored when Reilee Suter ripped a two-out double to left.

“The first [pitch] was just a normal pitch and then the second one I swung at was a rise and it was foul,” Suter said. “Then there was a couple balls, and someone in the stands said ‘it’s not going to be a rise’ so I got prepared for not rise, and it wasn’t a rise.”

That was all the offense Trampel needed in the circle. She pitched one-two-three innings in the second, fourth and sixth, and worked her way out of jams several times. Jones led off the first with a walk, but was stranded at second to end the inning.

Jaiden Oleson led off the fifth with a single to left, eventually working her way around to third before a strikeout ended that inning. In the seventh, Corrie Remley led off with a single to right, but a strikeout, a pop out to first and another strikeout ended that inning and the game.

Erie-Prophetstown (17-6) had its biggest threat in the third. After Sydney Schwartz drew a one-out walk, Jones and Emma Davis bunted their way aboard to load the bases.

But the Hawks got out of that threat when a ball hit back to the circle turned into a 1-2-3 double play.

The Panthers stranded six runners in the game and had four runners in scoring position, but were unable to score.

“I just told the girls at the end of the game that we’ve been scoring multiple runs a game all season long, and the same thing happened against Rock Falls the other night, we had girls in scoring position and, for whatever reason we just can’t get the extra base hit we need to

score those runs,” Erie-Prophetstown coach Kerrie Tenboer said.

“We had lots of opportunities and it just didn’t go our way.”

Trampel was able to rely on her fielders when she needed to. Remley twice had hard-hit balls directly at Oregon infielders. Glassburn had a sharp line drive with two outs in the sixth directly at Suter at shortstop.

Trampel needed every bit of that defense with Oregon’s hitters able to do little against Jones most of the way. A bunt single in the first and an infield single in the second failed to produce any runs. Lena Trampel ripped a double to left in the fourth, the first ball any Oregon player had hit out of the infield in the game and in the process breaking a string of seven strikeouts in a row from Jones.

“Screwballs and riseballs always worked,” Jones said. “That’s my go-to pitch.

“Coach Tenboer always knows what to call. She knows the right sequence and she always knows what’s working for me.”

After the string of seven strikeouts, which included striking out the side in the third, she struck out four batters in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

“She’s been our rock every single time she’s been on the mound for us,” Tenboer said. “She was throw-

Emmanuel Reformed Church introduces new preschool program Emmanuel Reformed Church announced the start of a new preschool program called “SONSHINE Early Education.”

The church is excited to offer the program, which will be free and faithbased.

The mission of the program is to teach the love of Christ while introducing the concepts of language, math and fine motor/large motor skills while nurturing the social and emotional development of students as they prepare for kindergarten.

Morning sessions will be offered from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting Wednesday, Sept. 8. The dates will follow the Morrison schools’ attendance schedule.

The director of the preschool pro-

gram will be Carol Stralow of Morrison, a 30-plus-year veteran kindergarten teacher in the Erie School District who recently retired and is excited to begin this new opportunity. Stralow has a master’s degree in early childhood development.

The church will be limiting enrollment to 15 students who will be attending kindergarten in fall 2022. Registration for the 2021-22 preschool year is now open until July 31. Registration forms can be found on the Emmanuel Church website, www.emmanuelreformedchurch.com, the church’s Facebook page, or picked up at the church office during regular office hours.
