Hand sanitizer available at local grocers

BY SARAH FORD sford@shawmedia.com As the coronavirus pandemic rages on, two small-town grocery stores are finding ways to deliver essentials their customers need during shelter-in-place.

Shaw’s Marketplace in Prophetstown and Mount Carroll and Shaheen’s Village Market in Erie are selling liquid sanitizer for 70 cents an ounce. Customers can bring their own bottles to be filled by staff.

The sanitizer is made by Kennay Farms Distilling in Rochelle which switched from manufacturing spirits to the 78% alcohol hand sanitizer after its tasting room was shut down to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Kennay staff has been fielding around 400 calls a day for the popular and hardto-find cleanser.

“We’ve had several customers say it’s a very good idea, especially since they can’t find hand sanitizer anymore,” Shaw’s Marketplace employee Amber Davis said.

Over at the Erie store at 707 Main St., Mark Shaheen also has a sanitizer fill station. “It retails well,” he said.

Shaheen also offers home delivery and pick-up options for his customers.

“We’ve been delivering to more people who want to stay home. We don’t mind doing that,” he said, noting that local customers can call in their orders.

Staffers at each store are not required to wear masks, but they are encouraged to do so if they choose.

“It helps out our staff and customers, so they feel comfortable,” Shaheen said.

His wife, Lesli, and his employees also are working extra hours on more intensive cleaning duties, he said. He also eyed a recent shipment of mulch, another popular commodity now that people have time to devote to their home projects.

“We want to keep everyone safe,” Shaheen said. “We’re following the guidelines set by the state, the CDC, and the Illinois Department of Health.”

Health department reports 1,842 new COVID-19 cases

Following the lead of nearby states, Gov. JB Pritzker on April 17 that Illinois’ public and private schools will remain shuttered for the rest of the school year.

The announcement came one month after Pritzker first announced a temporary school closure amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and on the same day the state announced 62 more deaths and 1,842 new confirmed cases the largest single-day spike so far. That brought total deaths to 1,134 and total cases to 27,575.

Pritker said the state’s COVID-19 curve is “flattening, not flat,” and key metrics to watch are hospitalization rate and how long it takes for the number of cases to double. Both

are testing more people, and she and Pritzker agreed that fatality and case count increase rates have not peaked yet.

The state reported 7,574 more people tested in the past day, the second largest daily total thus far. There now have been 130,163 people tested for the virus in Illinois.

As cases have now been confirmed in 92 of Illinois’ 102 counties, Pritzker made the call Friday to cancel school, public and private, for the rest of the academic year.

“Folks, I’ve said time and time again, my decisions are hard ones, but they will follow the science.

And the science says our students can’t go back to their normal routine,” Pritzker said. “... My priority remains unchanged how do we save the most lives during this very difficult time.”

In an average day, Pritzker said, 2 million K-12 students would meet in large groups in hallways, classrooms and extracurricular activities before going home.

Ezike said social distancing is working and needs to continue.

The governor said one of the difficulties in the decision was the fact that students would have fewer instructional hours, and that Illinois is an education landscape in which some districts are better able to enact remote learning than others.

But Illinois administrators and educators are “stepping up to ensure that every child in this state receives the education they deserve,” he said, even if the method varies by community.

Guidance offered by the Illinois State Board of Education includes daily check-ins on each student by the teacher and grading reflective of “the unprecedented circumstances in which students are attempting to continue their studies,” Pritzker said.

Pritzker also announced another $569 million in federal funding will be available to Illinois schools as part of the recent federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, or CARES Act. Districts will receive a portion of that funding proportional to how many low-income students they teach. ISBE officials will allocate additional money to communities most in need of resources, the governor said. That funding may be spent on technology for students and teachers and meals to distribute to those youth that need them.

“Our school buildings may be closed, but the hearts and the minds of our teachers and students are wide open,” Illinois Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carmen Ayala said. “This pandemic has altered the fabric of how we teach, how we learn and how we connect, but it has not shaken the core of what our schools do, and that is to take care of Illinois’ children and prepare them for what is next.”

She added state officials do not “expect” students to learn everything they would have this year had in-person classes continued. The agency plans to release guidance to assist schools address “learning loss.”

OTHER NOTES • Ezike said while some individual hospitals in Illinois may be at capacity, not all in a particular area are.

IDPH divided the state’s 211 hospitals into 11 regions, and “there’s no region that has no beds,” she said.

• Residents experiencing symptoms can find information about where they may get tested on the IDPH website at dph.illinois.gov\ COVID19.

• The governor said he is “managing through this time reasonable well” in response to a question about how he is faring mentally and physically. While it is “hard not to let (the daily statistics) get you down,” he added, “if everybody persists out there with the stay-at-home order, ... we’ll do better every day.”

Ezike added she is “finding the strength I need to carry on,” and she has no complaints.

Annan Grist Mill renovation ready and waiting Renovation to feature days of Goodenough Milk deliveries

BY JERRY LINDSEY jlindsey@shawmedia.com The Annan Grist Mill, located on Rock Creek in Morrison, is anticipating a spring opening that will allow the viewing of an extensive collection of memorabilia that reflects the times of milk production and home delivery throughout Whiteside County.

The mill, a restoration project owned by the Morrison Historical Society, has been a special interest project for Historical Society President, Harvey Zuidema.

Zuidema has spearheaded the remodeling of the display wing with the aid of Duane Habben, Norm Elder and Jerry Schllegel.

Work has included raising and leveling the floor 16 inches, replacing the inside siding and flooring, adding a new furnace, adding a tin ceiling, and painting the support beams in anticipation of an April grand opening.

Much of the display memorabilia has been collected over the years by Zuidema, who has a special love for the collection due to the fact he was employed by Goodenough as a delivery driver through the prosperous years of the mid to late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

He has vivid memories of his deliveries that took him south through

Erie, Hilsdale, Albany and Garden Plain three times a week and two routes around Morrison and Fulton plus special school drop-offs when they were in session.

A delivery truck that was a familiar site around Whiteside County is owned by Zuidema and will be the center of the society’s displays.

Current pandemic restrictions has complicated the actual opening date for the mill. The remodel is ready and the collection will begin to make its way into the historic structure in anticipation of setting a date when groups may gather to admire the collection of displays and recall the many memories surrounding the Goodenough Milk era.

KATHERINE DOERING Katherine Bernadine Doering, 94, of Prophetstown, died Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at her home.

KENNETH G. HUIZENGA Kenneth G. Huizenga, 79, of Prophetstown, died Sunday, April 12, 2020 at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling.

A private family visitation and private family graveside service will be held at the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown. Interment is in the Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.

A memorial to Rock River Hospice and Home has been established.

Kenneth was born September 15, 1940 in Morrison, to Marvin H. and Una (Port) Huizenga. He was educated in the Morrison grade schools and was a graduate of Morrison High School.

On October 11, 1959 he married Janet M. Thede in Prophetstown. Kenneth, alongside Jerry Higgins, founded Prophet Gear on July 1, 1980.

He knew the meaning of hard work and took great pride in providing for his family.

He enjoyed golfing and was a past member and board member of Prophet Hills Country Club.

He was also a volunteer fire-fighter and past president of the Prophetstown Fire Department. His greatest loves in life were his three grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; one son, Davey (Dawn) Huizenga; two granddaughters, HollyAnn and HeatherAnn; one grandson, Rhen K.; a sister, Pat (Dick) Stegemann of Cherry Valley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Bryan and Wesley Huizenga; two sisters, Beverly Van Ryke and Diane McGraw; two brothers, Larry Huizenga and Jerry Lee Huizenga, in infancy.

KEITH C. JONES Keith C. Jones, 78, Morrison, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa.

Keith was born on July 26, 1941 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Clark and Hazel (Lewis) Jones. He married Diane (Zuidema) Brands in 1962 and together they had two sons.

He married Shirley (Large) Cady in 1979 in Morrison.

He was an over the road truck driver his entire life retiring in 2005. He loved spending time with family, camping, winters in Yuma, Arizona and telling old trucker stories.

He was a member of the brotherhood of Shriners and was very dedicated to raising money for the Shriner’s Hospital through their Shriner Diner fundraising events.

Survivors include his wife Shirley, sons Jack (Pamela) Jones, Morrison and Joel (Gina) Jones, Rock Falls, stepchildren Sherry (Rick) Venhuizen and Mike (Jan) Cady, both of Morrison, 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and siblings, Gary (Alice) Jones, Davenport, Iowa, Julie (Dave) Jennings, Bailey, Colorado, Rita (Ken) Wolf, Monticello, Iowa and Dale (Julie) Jones, Morrison.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, mother of his sons, Diane.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Arrangements were completed by the McDonald Funeral Home in Fulton.

Memorials can be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children.

LAVERN J. BENNET Lavern J. “Vern” Bennet, 76, of Prophetstown, passed away on Monday April 6, 2020, peacefully at home with his wife by his side.

There will be a private family graveside service at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. The arrangements are being handled by the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown. A memorial in his honor has been established.

Vern was born April 2, 1944 in Neponset, the son of Wilbur and Elizabeth (Stabler) Bennett.

Vern graduated from Neponset High School in 1963. On June 5, 1964 he married Mary S. Anderson at Prophetstown United Methodist Church.

Vern worked 36+ years at the former Northwestern Steel & Wire Company in Sterling.

As he always said, “I turned off the lights when my shift ended – for the final time”. He had worked in different departments, but he enjoyed running the 15 – 75 ton cranes.

He was brought up on the family farm and enjoyed everything about the farming.

He always was working for area farmers, among them Dean Sandrock, Uncle Jack (Brady), and the AHA Farm in Erie.

Vern was known as quite the mechanic, changing engines in his friend’s cars, reconditioning tractors and always working on motorcycles.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary; two sons, Randy (Shari) of Prophetstown and Russ (Jamie) of Ottawa; three grandchildren, Heather, Brooke and Nicholas Bennett; one brother, Leslie Bennett, of Neponset; one sister, Mary (Orval) Hilman of Fairmont, West Virginia; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wilbur Dean and Ivan; three sisters, Shirley, Audrey and Carol; his in-laws, Bob and Shirley Anderson.

Brian D. Scott, age 63 of Lyndon, died Friday, April 10, 2020 at his home.

Brian was born on December 3, 1956 in Kewanee, the son of Glen and Marjorie (Cordrey) Scott.

He married Kandi Higgins on June 6, 1992 in Prophetstown.

A hard worker, he spent many years as a lathe operator at Metal Spinners in Rock Falls.

Brian was a proud and loving husband and father. A friend to all, he was known for his laid-back demeanor and “chill” attitude.

He had a passion for music and played locally for many years (Cuz Band).

He shared his talent for playing drums, guitar and singing with his sons and everyone around him. Brian also liked to spend his free time with his wife, Kandi, camping by the river.

He loved to karaoke and drink Busch Lattes by the fire with their dogs and close family.

He was very proud of all his family, all of his sons, and relished in his role as a grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Kandi; his mom, Marlene Scott of Prophetstown; his five sons, Jeremy (Sharri) Scott of Chicago, Shawn (Brooke) Schwartz of Princeton, Joe (Kryssi) Vos of Peoria, Tyler Scott of Lyndon and Austin (Maureen) Scott of Laramie, Wyoming; four grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah, Ryden and Brayden; his siblings, Beth (Dan) Stephens, Shannon (Jen) Brooks, Shawn (Kim) Brooks, Joleen (Dave) Batten, Dennis (Terry) Lewis, Greg (Jill) Lewis, Gary (Joanie) Lewis and Roger (Dorine) Lewis; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen Scott and Marjorie Scott; one sister, Amy Levan and one brother, Brent Scott.

Katherine spent her time raising her four children and also helped as a part time driver for her husband’s company, Doering Van Lines.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Prophetstown.

She enjoyed vacationing with her family; she and Herbert took a trip to Branson, Missouri every year. She loved bowling and watching Andy Williams perform.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann (Larry) Drain of Cridersville, Ohio and Penny (Terry) Boseneiler of Prophetstown; two sons, Roger (Terri) Doering of Morrison and Dennis (Peggy) Doering of Prophetstown; eight grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; fifteen great-great grandchildren.

Chief Terry Engle honored throughout Illinois

BY SARAH FORD sford@shawmedia.com Hampton and Rapids City Police Chief Terrence “Terry” Engle is being remembered as a dedicated and caring public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community and his country.

Engle passed away after a single vehicle accident on Saturday, April 11 while en route to an emergency call in Rapids City.

BRUCE PLUMB Bruce Joseph Plumb, 51, of Port Byron, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Due to the restrictions on public gatherings, a “Memorial Drive-By procession” took place Sunday, April 18, 2020 at Bruce’s childhood home (5421 - 230th St. N., Port Byron).

A celebration of life, Catholic Mass and burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Bruce Plumb may be made to Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron.

Bruce was born March 16, 1969 in Moline, the son of the late Chester Lloyd and Elizabeth “Betty” (DeCapp) Plumb.

He graduated from Riverdale High School and attended Kirkwood Community College.

Bruce worked for the family business, Commercial Towel Service, for many years. He took pride in knowing many aspects and helping in growing the business.

More recently, he was employed as a thermal and equipment operator at Arconic.

Bruce enjoyed life to the fullest! He loved and enjoyed spending time with his Mom, his girlfriend, Julie, and family.

Keysa, his 15 year old yellow lab, stole a piece of Bruce’s heart and was his pride and joy.

Bruce’s late Aunt Doris commented once that, “Keysa was the prettiest

Tributes have been pouring in since the accident, with local police and fire departments sharing messages of solidarity online.

All flags in Illinois were ordered to fly at half-staff from sunrise on Friday, April 17 through sunset, April 19, in memory of the chief.

There was a walk through Hampton on April 13 in honor of his life.

Flowers and cards have been placed outside his office window at the Hampton Police Department Engle’s law enforcement career lasted over 35 years, starting at Black Hawk College in Moline and later on the Hampton Police Department. Rapids City has contracted with Hampton for police protection services for the past ten years.

Engle left the Hampton/Rapids City police force in September 2018 after he accepted a position as a Public Safety officer at the Quad City International Airport. He returned

to his former post in Hampton in October 2019 to assist in training and mentoring the next chief.

In his personal life, he loved playing golf and watching the Masters Tournament, flying airplanes as he had a private pilot’s license, riding motorcycles, Corvettes and old cars, craft beer, and traveling. He loved his family and friends unconditionally and was a man of God. “One of my favorite things Terry used to do in his profession was sit

He thought of them as if they were his own children.

A true “F-Uncle” for Robert, Daniel, Cole, Kelsey, Parker, Karly, Madison, Ryan and Haley. If Bruce wasn’t working, he was spending time with his mom at the “kitchen table,” landscaping, tinkering, or riding his custom Harley.

Riding his Harley with Julie, along with his friends, on many outings was a source of relaxation, exhilaration and pleasure for him.

Bruce will be forever missed at our future gatherings at home and in the community.

We will feel a huge shift in our lives now that Bruce’s larger than life personality has gone home to be with the Lord and forever reunited with his Dad and other loved ones.

Bruce is survived by his mother, Betty Plumb, Port Byron; his dog, Keysa; girlfriend, Julie Sachau, Port Byron; siblings, Brian (Reba) Plumb, Hillsdale, Lynn (Charlie) Brown, Fenton, Lori (Don) Sheley, Port Byron, Barry (Claudia) Plumb, Port Byron, Lisa (Don) Fox, Port Byron; and nieces and nephews, Robert (Lisa), Carter, and Stella Deines, Port Byron, Daniel (Adriane), Elle, Ethan, and Carter Deines, Bettendorf, Cole (Allison) Deines, LeClaire, Kelsey Sheley, Des Moines, Parker Sheley, Chicago, Karly Sheley, Iowa City, Madison Hugart, Ames, Iowa, Ryan and Haley Plumb, Port Byron.

ETHYL ARNOLD

attended the Green Valley Grade School and in 1955 he graduated from Morrison High School.

On June 20, 1956 he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce I. Wierenga, at the United Methodist Church in Albany, IL. From 1956 – 1958 he served in the National Guard unit from Rock Falls.

Alan engaged in farming, and he along with his father, Joe, fed cattle. They attended the Rock Island Livestock Auction almost every Monday, both buying and selling cattle.

He and Joyce lived on the home place west of Morrison for 63 years of their marriage; he retired after 49 years of farming.

Alan was a member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church of Morrison, the Whiteside County Farm Bureau and Ducks Unlimited.

He enjoyed going to auctions, antiquing and gardening (after retiring from farming). He especially enjoyed taking monthly trips to Ohio to spend cherished time with his grandsons, Ben and Bart.

He was a fun and generous grandfather, and loved letting the boys drive his pickup down the farm lane when they were youngsters.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; a daughter, Lori Mays of Middletown, Ohio; two grandsons, Benjamin and Bartholomew Mays, both of Middletown, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Paula Custer of Morrison. Also surviving is a niece, Monica Custer Newmann of Prospect Heights, whom he thought of as a granddaughter; an aunt, Marian Houzenga of Morrison, and some cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Joel Medema; two brothersin-law, Darrell and Loren Wierenga.

Ethyl Lucille Arnold, 89, of Silvis, died Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at Genesis Medical Center – Illini, Silvis. Ethyl was born July 3, 1930 in Geneseo, the daughter of Bert and Hazel (Chrisop) Cochren. She married Dewey Arnold on January 14, 1950. He preceded her in death on July 7, 2009. Ethyl was a switchboard operator, a homemaker and a great cook.

McCombie asking governor to open state parks Rep. Tony McCombie, a state representative in the 71st District is one of seven legislators who have spearheaded an effort to have Illinois state parks and trails reopened.

McCombie and six other Republican legislators in the Illinois House of Representatives, sent a letter to Governor JB Pritzker and Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Director Colleen Callahan on April 14 requesting the governor re-open state parks and trails that have been closed since the March 20 Stay at Home Order went into effect.

“We have heard regularly from constituents across the state asking when they will be able to get back into our state parks and trails as part of their physical, mental, and emotional wellness routines,” McCombie said in a press release.

“We believe opening the state parks and trails, with proper social distancing in place, will improve the overall wellness of Illinois.”

In the letter, McCombie said state parks are “original destinations for Illinoisans to social distance, exercise and engage in recreational opportunities that improve their wellbeing.”

Barricades continue to block the entrance of the Prophetstown State Recreation Area and other state parks in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Illinois Governor JB Prtizker shuttered all state parks in March to prevent groups from gathering and spreading the virus.

“Since Illinois’ was the nation’s first State Park system to fully close, we are certain the leadership can also be the first to re-open with prop-

State parks and trails in several surrounding states have not been off limits during other states’ Stay Home Orders, allowing their res-

idents to enjoy preserved natural resources while still abiding by proper social distancing guidelines, the press release said.

40 Years April 23, 1980 Albert B. Norman, one of Fulton’s most active community leaders in modern times, died at Mercy Hospital. He had been in poor health for some time. He was elected alderman and served a number of terms.

He gave up that position when the Mayor and City Council asked him to become the city’s first superintendent, a position he held for several years.

Warren Tusing, owner of Union 76 Service Station for over 30 years is retiring from the business. Robert Howard is purchasing the business.

Robert and his wife Noreen will change the name to “Bob’s Pit Stop”.

Earth Day 2020 to mark its 50th anniversary

BY JERRY LINDSEY jlindsey@shawmedia.com As each day closes, new numbers of COVID-19 victims increase and the world continues to look for the end.

The pandemic will share the headlines on April 22, but the world is reminded to observe Earth Day and the efforts that united over 200 million people in 141 countries to push for environmental improvements on a global level.

Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day continues to grow as a worldwide phenomenon focused on promoting clean living and a healthy, sustainable habitat for people and wildlife alike. Celebrating Earth Day serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our planet is and how important it is to

protect it.

The timing of the April 22 observance in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic serves as a settling moment while the world struggles to return to a normal lifestyle.

It is a day to concentrate on making the earth a place that is clean, safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Started as a grassroots movement, Earth Day created public support for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and contributed to the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act and several other environmental laws.

Earth Day 2020 can serve as a rally day to reassure the many suffering today that a better tomorrow is on the horizon.

Summer Learning Program.

There will be challenges to do at home.

Of course, you will still be able to READ all summer to complete the program.

There will still be a prize when the program is completed.

Of course, all of this can change when we get updated information from the Governor at the end of the month. We miss all of you! Reach out if you need anything!

Summer Camps at Cordova Library Cordova District Library will have two Art Camps, two Science Camps, and one Sewing Camp. Each camp has a limited

number of spots available.

For the Art and Science Camps, there are eight spots in the morning session from 10 a.m. - noon or eight spots for the afternoon session from 1-3 p.m. There will be one (eight camper) session of Sewing Camp from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. You may sign up for more than one camp.

The June and July camps will feature different lessons. Campers wishing to attend both sessions of Art and/or Science Camp will sign up for their first choice (June or July) and add their name to a waiting list for their second choice.

Staff will review the waiting list after

everyone has had the opportunity to sign up for at least one camp. Registration is required and spots fill up fast. See dates below.

Staff are also working on a “Camp in a Box” for Cordova residents and area kids who do not live within a library district.
