The Fulton City Council had two action items on the agenda at their meeting Feb. 22.

They first approved the resolution concerning the Illinois Fiber Resources Group’s open-access fiber optic network expansion project. iFiber is applying for funding from the federal Economic DevelopmentAdministration to support

expanding the fiber optic network in Fulton and Clinton.

The non-profit has received other funding to construct a reliable, redundant, and scalable network throughout Northwest Illinois to serve publicand private sectors. The city’s resolution supports the expansion project and application to the EDA. The council also approved an ordinance vacating part of Fifth Avenue, south of lots 2 and 3 in block 5, to Harry

and Julie Dornbush.

Fulton Police Chief Nick Neblung reported that the Illinois governor signed the criminal justice reform bill, and the city has “lots of things in the works” including new policies and body cameras that will keep them ahead of the curve.

He said there are a lot of questions and concerns, and the department will continue to work on updates.

LOCAL DONATION

Young Farmers supply pantry with hamburger The Fulton-Thomson Food Pantry received 200 pounds of hamburger to help feed those in need.

Carroll County Farm Bureau Young Leaders Jeremy Flikkema and Ellen Rahn made the delivery. The CCFB Young Leaders have been major supporters of the pantry for many years.

The Young Farmers join a host of other supporters who have helped the pantry to continue to serve during this unprecedented pandemic.

The Fulton-Thomson Food Pantry board of directors thanks every individual, church, business, group and corporation who have donated. This past year has brought a 25 percent increase in clients served. The board also would like to recognize the many volunteers who donate their time.

The Fulton-Thomson Food Pantry is at 1114 Third Street in Fulton and is open every Thursday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Anyone in need, with a Fulton or Thomson address, is welcome to come once a month.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the pantry is a driveup facility with volunteers coming out to load cars. Emergency appointments may be made by calling 815-589-3671.

County roads now posted

All roads in the Prophetstown Township are posted for spring weight limits.

The Whiteside County Highway Department has also announced the posting of spring weight limits for county highways. These postings went into effect on Monday, March 8, and will remain in effect until further notice.

Members of the Erie Fire Protection District gathered Saturday, Feb. 20, for the first-ever “push-in” ceremony to bring a new emergency vehicle into service.

The department recently purchased the 2020 Ford F-550 at a cost of $190,000 after three years of planning and budgeting.

The new truck is a multipurpose addition to the fleet and will be available for any emergency call in which manpower and extra support is needed.

Before pushing the truck into the bay where the previous one sat, firefighters and family members reflected on the past, present and future.

First Assistant Chief Scott Melton said the ceremony was a throwback to fire service in the days of horsedrawn pumps, when firefighters after unhitching the horses after a call would have to push the pumps back into the station.

“We’re here to pay some respect and give recognition to the traditional element of fire service,” Melton said.

Fire Chief Doug Rutledge described the 1995 Ford F-350 brush truck that the new one replaced. He recalled the dual wheels that would get caked in mud, low ground clearance, the 250-gallon water tank, a twoman cab, and firefighters having to stand on the truck to fight brush fires, which wasn’t really safe.

Firefighters often had trouble maintaining the proper speed to make the nozzles flow properly. The truck was a mini-pumper and could pump water and draft water out of rivers to fill the tankers.

The truck served the department well for more than 25 years, Rutledge said, but the new truck has a 300-gallon tank, room for four to five firefighters, a water cannon on the front, high ground clearance, a winch and other emergency response tools.

Rutledge said it will serve as a brush truck and a squad truck with the ability to transport more firefighters to mutual aid calls as opposed to sending out the much larger fire trucks.

As for the future, Adam Voeltz, a member of the truck committee along with Melton and Jordan Garrison, said firefighters already have been training on the new truck, which he praised as “a lot more user-friendly and simpler to operate.”

The new truck will allow the department to better serve the taxpaying citizens of Erie and the surrounding district. Melton said the truck will be in service for the next 25 to 30 years, and they can build on it, modi-

Couple to mark 65 years John and Donna Morse of Lyndon will observe their 65th wedding anniversary. The couple were married March 10, 1956, at the Prophetstown Methodist Church in Prophetstown.

They have two children, Clint (Gina) Morse of Lyndon and Marlee (Jay) Walton of Ames, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

How to reduce the risk of developing a leg ulcer

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, MD Leg ulcers have been a source of chronic frustration to patients and physicians alike. They can be developed by anyone, but certain people are more at risk than others.

For example, if you are over 65, obese, smoke, have heart disease, leg pain while walking, or advanced diabetes, your chances of getting a venous leg ulcer are increased. There is also a slight risk from having been pregnant.

As we age, the skin’s ability to heal becomes impaired, but poor circulation, swelling and inadequate nutrition may also play a role in making the skin more susceptible to injury and ulcers.

Ulcers develop from inside to outside. They are caused by disease in the deep veins. One of the earliest signs is a brownish discoloration on the leg, sometimes accompanied by scaling.

Some people with wide calves and narrow ankles may be set up for developing leg ulcers as well.

What can be done to reduce the risk of developing a venous leg ulcer? · Always examine your legs carefully for changes in skin color and texture. Report any significant change to your doctor. · If you are overweight, try to lose weight. · Do not smoke. · Do not stand motionless in one place for prolonged periods of time.

· While watching television or reading, keep your feet above the level of your heart. · When sleeping, raise the foot end of the bed so your feet and heart are about the same level. If you have heart disease, sleep with the affected leg or both legs lifted on a pillow or foam rubber wedge. · Under your doctor’s supervision, begin a gradual program of walking to keep your calf muscles pumping. This helps tremendously. · Your doctor may prescribe support hose. Wear these as directed. · Wound care clinics have helped many difficult-to-treat wounds.

If you already have a venous leg ulcer, the same principles apply as above.

In addition, never put ointment or overthe-counter preparations on the ulcer without your doctor’s advice. These may make matters worse. Any time there is redness, drainage, swelling or pus, your physician should be consulted.

Certain types of leg ulcers may benefit from the newer occlusive type of dressing patches. These accumulate fluids in them as part of the healing process. Your doctor may go over this with you as to how often to change the patch, what to look for, etc., in the extremities. One such medication is Trental, which your doctor may prescribe and review the side effects.

Finally, pressure should always be avoided, as well as trauma and injury to the leg.

Owner says he has sold property to an investment group

bweidman@shawmedia.com MORRISON – For more than 70 years, Hilltop Lanes has been the place where bowlers set ‘em up and knocked ‘em down.

That will be ending in less than two months.

Mike Hamilton, owner of the business for the past 23 years, will shut down for good April 23. He is selling the property to an investment company in Chicago, the contents will be sold, and the building at 629 E. Lincolnway will be torn down.

At its peak, in the early 1990s, Hilltop had 525 league bowlers, Hamilton said.

That number has dwindled to 95 for Monday through Friday league nights.

“The numbers just keep going down every year,” Hamilton said.

“[This deal] kind of happened out of nowhere. Somebody approached me about wanting the property, and I figured in a couple of years I was going to want to do this, anyway, and then there might not be a buyer.

I took the opportunity. It’s a little early, but I couldn’t pass it up.”

Hilltop Lanes was built in 1950.

Mike’s dad, Don Hamilton, and his brother-in-law, Art Sikkema, bought it in 1964, and Don became the sole owner in 1971. He and Mike ran it from 1973 to 1998, then Mike became the sole owner.

Old bowlers simply are not being replaced with new ones.

“You’re always trying, but you can’t get the young people to do it anymore,” Hamilton said. “Everybody is my age [64] or older. The young people are too busy with their lives and their kids, so they won’t commit to bowling a 32-week season.”

Leagues at Hilltop run from just after Labor Day until the middle of April. There is open bowling on weekends.

sad they won’t have a bowling alley in Morrison to go to anymore, he said.

“They get it. Most of the league bowlers have bowled their whole lifetime here, so they get it,” Hamilton said. “They’ve seen how the numbers have gone down, and they understand. … It makes me sad Morrison won’t have a bowling alley or a golf course or a roller rink anymore.

It bums me out that I’m letting the community down.”

Hamilton is planning a customer appreciation weekend April 17 and 18.

“I’d like people to stop out and share memories of the alley, have a drink and some food, and look at pictures,” he said. “We’re going to try to have all the old bartenders from over the years come out and work a half-hour, and have everybody enjoy that last weekend.”

Hamilton’s plans are to retire, and he and his wife, Elizabeth, will continue to live in Morrison, although they may find time to spend a few months in the winter in a warm spot like Florida. Both knees need to be replaced; he already has an appointment to fix his left knee in July.

Once a bowler with a 210 average, Hamilton plans to bowl twice a week, once his knees are good, at Triple Play Bowling and Banquet in Fulton, where many of his league bowlers now will play.

“I thank the community for supporting me so long,” Hamilton said.

“It was a great job – the greatest job a person could have, as far as I’m concerned.

“I’ve met hundreds of people and have lifelong friendships. That’s what I’ll miss the most, is the people.”

OBITUARIES DAVID I. CARROLL CLINTON, Iowa – David Ivan Carroll, 83, of Clinton, Iowa, died Friday, February 26, 2021, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

A private family visitation will be held at the Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home followed by a private family graveside service at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. Ken Renkes will officiate.

A memorial to the Morrison United Methodist Church has been established.

David was born Jan. 2, 1938, in Sterling, to Ivan and Margaret Elizabeth (Milnes) Carroll.

He was educated in the Thomson grade schools and was a 1956 graduate of Morrison High School where he was the homecoming king.

David served in the U.S. Army. He married Sally A. Onken on March 16, 1958, in Morrison. David first served a 5-year apprenticeship for plumbing under Harry Traum before entering the military. In 1963, he went to work for Voss Brothers Plumbing in Clinton retiring in 2000 after 37 years of employment.

David was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clinton, where he served as an usher.

He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 25 in Rock Island.

David was a Scout leader and baseball coach. He also coached AAU girls and boys basketball.

He enjoyed all sports especially watching his grandsons play soccer and baseball and his granddaughter perform.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Sally; two daughters, Lynn (Todd) Holverson and Lisa (Curt) Lewis both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Troy and Erick Carroll both of Clinton, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Ethan (Alli Hampton) Holverson, Lauren Holverson, Mateaus Lewis, Gavin Lewis, Josh Carroll, Derick Carroll, and Brittany Carroll; one brother, Terry (Ginny) Carroll of Galena; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Irene Ericson of Hammond, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Nickolas.

MORRISON – Gordon “Gordy” Bramm, 75, of Morrison, died Sunday, February 21, 2021 at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home.

Interment was at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

A memorial to Boy Scout Troop #96 has been established.

Gordy was born April 2, 1945 in Savanna to Woodrow W. and Mary Vivian (McMahon) Bramm.

He was a graduate of Morrison High School.

On July 31, 1966 he married Mary M. Gruber in Fulton.

Gordy owned and operated Bramm Tree Service in Fulton for 55 years.

He was a life member of Boy Scout Troop #96 in Morrison. Gordy was an enthusiastic racing fan which began at the Speed Bowl Park in Sterling and continued throughout his life.

He was a very social person who never met a stranger.

He also was a giving man and enjoyed helping anyone in need, following the Boy Scout slogan, “Do a good turn daily.”

Gordy loved animals, especially his cat, Scooter. Above all, his work and his grandchildren were his life.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; one daughter, Julie (Chris) Harding of Rochelle; one son, James Bramm of Morrison; four grandchildren, Allysa, Gabrielle, Shannon and Christian Harding; one sister, Patricia Flynn of Sandwich; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael, in infancy; and one brother, John “Woody” Bramm.

MORRISON – Regina E. Keith, 100, of Windsor Manor in Morrison, died Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Windsor Manor.

Her funeral service was Monday, March 1, at the Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment was at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

A memorial has been established to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Regina was born January 20, 1921, in Morrison, to Louis and Eva K. (Gaffey) Rick. She was educated in the rural Whiteside County schools.

On Dec. 19, 1942 she married Edward R. Keith in St. Louis, Missouri. He died Sept. 29, 2004.

Regina worked at Climco Coils in Morrison, and also at the Howard Hughes Aircraft Company. Lastly, she worked for 14 ½ years as a shipping clerk for General Electric in Morrison, until retiring in 1981.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and also the GEM Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Diane (Ben Olson) O’Brien of Janesville, Wisconsin; three sons, LaVerne (Sandi) Keith of McMinnville, Tennessee; Gary (Margaret) Keith of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and Robert (Carla) Keith of Streator; six grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; one stepdaughter, Dora Mae Wunderlin; one step-granddaughter, Jolene Wunderlin; one sister, Eileen Kelly, three brothers, Everett, Harold and Lauren Rick; two sons-in-law, Richard O’Brien and Roger Wunderlin; two daughters-in-law, Rita Keith and Ardyce Keith; and a grandsonin-law, Richard Wildermuth.

JEAN MEALEY SLAVIN MORRISON – Jean Mealey Slavin, 98, of Resthave Home in Morrison, died Thursday, February 25, 2021 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

Due to the pandemic, there will be no visitation or funeral service. The family hopes to have a celebration of Jean’s life at a later date. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers or a memorial, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to either the Morrison Schools Foundation or the American Red Cross.

Jean was born and raised in Greenwich, New York, the only child of Clarence “Chip” and Ione (Wilson) Mealey.

She was educated at Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts and also at Columbia University, New York City, New York.

She first taught for four years in Schenectady, New York where she met the love of her life, James E. Slavin. They married Feb. 4, 1950. Jim preceded her in death on June 9, 2001.

She spent 71 years in Morrison where she and her husband moved as he helped start up the then fledging G.E. plant. Jean taught kindergarten at Union Grove School for 15 years.

She was involved in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, the Morrison Hospital Auxiliary and the Morrison Women’s Club.

She also served for many years as the Red Cross Bloodmobile coordinator and was a volunteer for Resthave Home. Her passions included socializing (parties!), ballroom dancing (which she taught), golf, tennis, traveling and even college basketball and football – especially Notre Dame.

She is survived by her son, Judge Tim Slavin and his wife, Ann, and their immediate family – Molly Slavin, her husband, See OBITUARIES, Page 7

Morrison High School Agriculture students paraded tractors through town on Feb. 25 in celebration of National FFA Week.

Students braved the cold to visit Northside Elementary School.

School officials said the elementary students “had a blast” during

the visit, getting the opportunity to climb on the tractors and take a break from their normal school day.

The event is just one of the many new traditions the FFA Chapter at Morrison is putting into place as the four-year-old program continues to grow.

Fulton will have a new riverfront park as a result of a substantial boost given to the project by the city council.

The council voted to set aside $42,914 for the riverfront park project. Plans for the park are being prepared by the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Rock Island.

The plans will be part of an overall dike beautification for Fulton’s riverfront.

Two Fulton teachers were seriously injured in accidents over the weekend.

The Erie High School chapter of National Honor Society once again is partnering with St. Ambrose University to participate in their “For the Kids” Dance Marathon. The goal is to help raise funds for sick and injured children and their families to offset medical expenses, travel expenses and even food expenses as they travel back and forth to Iowa City.

Many of these children are from our region and our communities. It is the belief that parents should not have to worry about their child’s care and how they can afford to travel back and forth and pay for gas and eat. Parents need to be rested and stay positive for their child.

This is the third year that EHS has been involved in raising funds for the dance marathon. Obviously because of COVID-19, we have not been able to raise funds in the manner we have in the past with a food stand at an athletic event or even to host a dance. We have found other ways to raise funds within

our school, but not the dollar amount we did in the past.

Toward this goal, we have joined with the online fund drive at St. Ambrose University. Funds will go directly to their account, but Erie High School will receive credit for donations made at https://events.dancemarathon.com/ event/eriehighschool. Money raised through this online donor site will go directly into the St. Ambrose “For The Kids” Dance Marathon fund. The account will be open until April 2.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to consider a donation, no matter how large or small. Every single dollar joined together with others makes a big difference to the children. The funds raised are indeed “For the Kids” and their families.

Although the totals are not in yet for the NHS Month of Love For the Kids program, we are pleased to report that we are near a $1,000 goal set at the beginning of the month. Activities included dress up days, selling food items before school, a cupcake decoration contest and a bags tournament.

Sauk Valley awards monetary credit to Pathway students Sauk Valley Community College announced that students who graduate high school with a pathway endorsement on their transcript and continue their education at SVCC will receive a $100 credit toward their education.

Through this unique opportunity, SVCC aims to enable students to continue and complete their educational pathway and help expand the qualified workforce for the Sauk Valley area.

Pathway endorsements are awarded to high school students who are following a specified career path and complete the requirements as established by the Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness Act. Components of the endorsement require students to complete an individualized learning plan with two years of career content instruction, prove college ready in math and English, complete a minimum of two career exploration activities, complete two team-based challenges, create a résumé, complete a financial literacy component, submit a reflective statement, complete six hours of postsecondary credit, and complete a 60hour work-based learning experience.

The state of Illinois has the following pathways for students to earn endorsements: manufacturing, engineering, technology and trades, information technology, human and public services, health sciences and technology, finance and business services, arts and communication, agriculture, food, and natural resources.

Scholarships are available through the Sauk Valley College Foundation.

New merit and need-based scholarships open the first of each month and range from $150 to $1,000. Interested applicants should visit svcc.edu/scholarships for award criteria and application requirements. It takes only minutes to apply.

Pathway work provides students with experiences that prepare them to enter the workforce or postsecondary education with skills and knowledge necessary for success. What are you involved in at Fulton High School?

I am involved in band, student council, thespians, Key Club, volleyball and B.L.I.N.D. at Fulton High School.

What are your hobbies outside of school?

Outside of school, I attend dance classes three times a week and youth group on Wednesday nights. I also like to hang out with friends, read a good book, watch movies and babysit.

What have you learned from this pandemic?

I have learned how to be patient during this pandemic. For a while, I was very anxious for all of this to be over so that I could get back to my regular life. However, I have finally learned to slow down a little. Everything has been working and will work out on its own, so I have no reason to worry. I’m not going through this alone, and things will eventually get back to normal. I’ve learned to just take it one day at a time.

How would you describe your leadership style?

My leadership style is probably very different from a lot of people. I choose to take charge when I find it

I’m not as outspoken and talkative as many other leaders, but I still use my voice when it is needed. As a leader, I want people to see me as approachable and I want to form a strong relationship with them

so that they feel they can trust me. I never want to belittle someone just because I may be their leader.

What has B.L.I.N.D. meant to you?

B.L.I.N.D has been a great experience so far. I enjoy helping the freshmen get used to the school and building relationships with them. I also love how B.L.I.N.D is making me more aware of how I can be a leader in everyday life. B.L.I.N.D is a fun and important learning experience as a whole.

One fun fact about you?

One fun fact about me is that I published a book when I was 8 years old!

It’s a fun little story about a talking apple that my dad helped me publish as an e-book on both Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Words of advice?

My best word of advice is to just be yourself. Don’t feel like you have to change to fit in. You are perfect just the way you are, so don’t be afraid to stand out. High school is the best time to express yourself. Join the clubs and take classes that you’re most interested in. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. You’ll be the happiest when you get to do what you love.

River Valley library to host event on pre-Civil War quilts The River Valley District Library will host a Zoom presentation exploring the origins of slave routes passing through Illinois and the secret codes sewn into quilts that were used to navigate the Underground Railroad.

The presentation, “Pre-Civil War Quilts: Secret Codes to Freedom on the Underground Railroad,” will take place at 6 p.m. March 11 via Zoom. Presenter Connie Martin will share her family Bible from 1865 and the secrecy, codes and fugitive slave escape routes that were revealed. Learn about the origins of the Underground Railroad, slave routes passing through Illinois, and the quilt codes used to navigate the Underground Railroad with replicas made by Martin’s mother.

The event will be co-produced by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, which invites Illinois authors, artists and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state, enabling local nonprofit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities. The Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, presented in cooperation with the Illinois Bicentennial Commission and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, consists of presentations exploring Illinois history and culture in recognition of the state’s 200th anniversary.

Martin has a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and a master’s degree from Aurora

University, with a thesis in Integrating African American History Lessons in educational curriculums. Martin, as her mother did before her, shares the secret codes and hidden messages in the family quilts her ancestors used on the Underground Railroad. Martin teaches the history of the Underground Railroad, safe routes and the stories of how the quilt codes, their meanings and interpretations have been passed down to her, a sixth-generation descendant of captured African slaves forced into slavery in America.

4-H assistant dean and director In 2020, more than 400 Illinois 4-H competitive events, exhibitions and shows went virtual, providing a positive youth development experience while protecting our members, volunteers and staff. The 2021 4-H exhibition season also will be shaped by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are working hard to find solutions that balance the safety of our communities with the benefits our youth gain from participating in faceto-face judging experiences.

For this summer, we are exploring strategies that support a safe return to in-person 4-H exhibitions. In the youth development program of the University of Illinois Extension, our events must abide by the guidelines of both the campus and the Illinois Department of Public Health. As we evaluate options and apply innovative thinking to our event management processes, it is important to note that Illinois 4-H will continue to follow all relevant public health guidelines.

We’ve learned a great deal since

summer 2020, and we believe there is a path forward that will allow us to step back into in-person exhibitions. Illinois 4-H staff are diligently researching and designing program formats and structures. Our goal is to provide options so that each county can make its own program decisions based on local conditions. New safety protocols will play a significant role in our return to in-person programming, so we ask for your help in preparing your family and your community for what that may look like. Specific details will be announced later this spring and will reflect the best practices in place.

By working in partnership with local public health departments and other organizations in our communities, we are hopeful that our youth will be able to participate in one of the hallmark experiences of being a 4-H member – 4-H exhibitions and shows.

We remain committed to pacing our decision-making process in coordination with available data and safety protocols, but we are making plans that could allow for a return of in-person judging for 4-H exhibitions this summer.

MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse will open its 60th anniversary season in June with some changes because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new lineup for the summer will be “A Closer Walk” with Patsy Cline, “Pippin,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “The Robber Bridegroom,” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’.”

In September, TLP will bring “The Buddy Holly Story” to the stage. “The Buddy Holly Story” is not included in the basic subscription price of $119, but it may be added for $20.

Local auditions scheduled for March 27 and 28 have been

canceled. Local auditions will be rescheduled for roles in “What a Wonderful World” sometime in early fall. “Annie,” “Legally Blonde,” “Eleemosynary” and “Plaid Tidings” have been rescheduled for the 2022 season.

Subscription tickets to see all six summer productions are available for $119. Individual tickets prices are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $20 for students and children. Subscriptions or individual tickets may be purchased in person at the playhouse, 8215 Black Oak Road. Area fish fries canceled

Two popular area fish fries in March have been canceled because of COVID-19 restrictions in the state.

Hooppole American Legion Post 1191 announced last week it is canceling its event.

“Between the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and the county health officials, we won’t be able to provide a normal Hooppole Legion experience with our current guidelines,” a statement on its Facebook page said.

1191 estimated it will be November before it is able to cook fish for the community.

Shari Pilon of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie said the church will not be having its Lenten fish fries this year, which it typically hosts every Friday night in March. Pilon said the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the church population and attendance has limited the ability to provide the service.

“We’re sorry to have to cancel. Hopefully we’ll be back next year,” she said.

The free community Wednesday night drive-thru meals continue this Wednesday from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

This week’s menu will be country fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and s’mores bars. Enter the church parking lot from the north alley and remain in your cars. A runner will inquire as to how many meals you need, and those meals will be brought directly to you.

This Sunday’s 8:30 a.m. (masks MANDATORY) and 10 a.m. (masks recommended) worship services will have Pastor Luke Schouten continuing his Lenten message series, “Journey of the Stones” with his message “Sticks and Stones” drawn from John 8: 1-12.
