The Fulton Fire Protection District is in need of EMTS, paramedics, firefighters, and first responders after a combination of factors has left the department under-staffed.

Currently the station has 41 personnel between the Fire and EMS departments, two distinct but overlapping branches which handle a variety of situations throughout the year. There are 25 firefighters with room for 36, so the FFPD has put out the call for volunteers to help fill these essential roles that help keep neighborhoods safe, and neighbors healthy.

Volunteers may have to leave family events, dinners, and holidays if an emergency is called in, but they’ll gain friendships, camaraderie, respect, and pride in serving their community. Time will be invested, but those in the department become like family. A full roster means the duties can be shared, while still ensuring a speedy response.

Captain Justin VanDellen said the department’s calendar runs from Nov. 1st - Nov. 1st. In the past year alone, they had about 650 calls, the majority for EMS services. The department averages two calls a day.

Justin works on the Clinton Fire Department full-time, along with his brother Lieutenant Kurt VanDellen, who’s also a volunteer on the Fulton Department. They’ve made a career out of fire services by following in their dad’s footsteps, who has 40 years on the Fulton department and is still serving. The brothers already have 20 years under their belts.

going on calls due to possible exposure, or for safety reasons due to Illinois regulations. A few other members left this year for new careers.

No matter the changes, it’s still up to the department to provide essential fire and EMS services to Fulton and the surrounding area. The ambulance is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Volunteers come from many backgrounds and lifestyles. A diverse force has volunteers from all walks of life, and they choose to respond when the call comes in, whether at home, school, or work. No pre-certification is needed to join, and the department will provide free fire school and academy training.

Besides being a hero to those in need, there are some perks to being a volunteer - a yearly stipend check, all training and continuing education covered, gear and uniforms provided, and access to workout equipment and vehicle washing equipment at the fire station. Volunteers are covered under life insurance during calls. After 20 years of service lifetime membership is given, with a key to the building and invites to all department functions.

The requirements to join include being between the ages of 18-64 with a valid driver’s license – having a sense of humor helps, according to theVanDellens. Those with a certified Illinois EMT license are encouraged to apply. Volunteers must live within the Fulton Fire Protection District boundaries though case-by-case consideration is given to those not in the district, especially if holding a valid EMT license.

The Fulton Fire Department has welcomed and parted ways with many hard-working individuals since 1887.

Anyone seeking to volunteer can join the fire or EMS branch, or both. Due to the challenges of 2020, a new generation of brave civil servants is needed to maintain the peace of the town.

Police Chief to retire, City Clerk resigns

The Fulton City Council accepted the resignation of two officials during their meeting on Monday, Nov. 9.

Police Chief Dave Bartels will retire from the department on Dec. 28. He’s been on the department since 2008 and was Chief for the past three years. Bartels is also retired from the Illinois State Police. “We appreciate you investing time in this department,” said Alderman Barbara Mask.

The board also certified the resignation of City Clerk David Gibbons, effective immediately, though “with regrets” according to Alderman Mask. Gibbons

was appointed Clerk in June 2020 after the elected clerk moved away. Gibbons resigned due to finding other employment. City of Fulton Business Manager Tammy Gariby was appointed as interim clerk until the mayor makes a recommendation and the council votes.

The board also learned that a $46,000 insurance payment for derecho damage was received and will be split up between the general fund and other affected departments. They learned that the Heritage Canyon Christmas Walk will be on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 2 – 6 p.m.

In the Committee of the Whole meeting, the board discussed: looking into a canine for the police department, overtime pay, unauthorized parking near the windmill and a business owner’s request to designate spots, video gaming license requirements, applying to the CURES Program to recoup administrative costs during the pandemic, and the cancellation of the second council meeting in December.

The next meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 23. Attendance is limited, but a Zoom link is available by contacting the City Office.

Driver services facilities statewide will be closed to the public for in-person transactions effective from Tuesday, Nov. 17 until Monday, Dec. 7, due to the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.

Secretary of State Jesse White is encouraging the public to take advantage of online services.

White also announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses and ID cards will be extended until June 1, 2021. This June 1, 2021 extension also includes those who have February, March, April and May 2021 expiration dates.

As a result, expired driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until June 1, 2021.

CDL (Commercial Driver License) holders and commercial permit holders are excluded from this extension due to federal requirements.

Many transactions with the Secretary of State’s office may be conducted online at www.cyberdriveillinois.com, some of which include: Renewing a license plate sticker; Renewing a valid driver’s license for qualifying drivers; Renewing a valid ID card for those age 22-64 (seniors 65 and older have free, non-expiring IDs); Obtaining a driver record abstract; Filing Business Services documents, such as incorporations and annual reports; and Customers with issues involving administrative hearings may contact adminhearings@ilsos.gov.

Those who are eligible for online driver’s license renewal will receive a letter from the Secretary of State’s office with a PIN necessary for online renewal.

Those whose driver’s licenses or ID cards expired between Feb. 1, 2020 and Jan. 31, 2021, who qualify for online renewal should receive their PIN letter in December 2020 or January 2021.

ter approximately 90 days before their expiration date.

White said 19 CDL (Commercial Driver License) facilities will remain open for CDL written and road exams.

Lastly, White announced that seven facilities will be offering drive-through services for license plate sticker transactions ONLY. These facilities were selected due to the configuration of the buildings which allowed for drivethrough transactions.

The seven drive-through facilities are: Chicago North, 5401 N. Elston Ave.; Chicago West, 5301 W. Lexington St.; Rockford-Central, 3720 E. State St.; Macomb, 466 Deer Rd.; Springfield, Dirksen 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway; Tilton, #5 Southgate Dr.and Chicago South (opens Nov. 19), 9901 S. Rep. McCombie drops bid for minority leader Timothy Eggert

teggert@shawmedia.com Republican state Rep. Tony McCombie won’t attempt to unseat Illinois House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, despite indications that she was soliciting support from the caucus to challenge him for the leadership position during the fall veto session.

“The House Republican caucus will remain united in fighting for critical reforms to bring our state fiscal stability and rid it of the corruption it has been under for decades of Democrat control,” Durkin and McCombie said Tuesday in a joint press release. “We share the same goals and will work together as a caucus to help the people of Illinois.”

McCombie, who has represented the 71st District since 2016, told Politico on Nov. 6 that she was “talking to caucus members as she moves to line up support.”

CapitolFax reported on Nov. 5 that Durkin said he has “already secured

a majority of votes” to keep the minority leadership position, which he has held since 2013.

According to Illinois House Rules, the minority leader position goes to the representative who received the second-highest number of votes for the house speaker position, as long as that representative “is affiliated with the numerically strongest political party other than the party to which the [s]peaker belongs.”

Unofficial election results suggest that House Democrats will retain their majority on a 72-46 split.

If those numbers hold, then Durkin will need at least 23 votes from House Republicans to be retained as minority leader.

Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan will need at least 60 votes to remain speaker.

But, at least eight House Democrats have made public that they do not intend to vote for Madigan, who is the subject of a legislative probe into whether he “engaged in conduct which is unbecoming to a legislator

or which constitutes a breach of public trust.”

Both McCombie and her Democratic challenger, Joan Padilla, said in a September interview with the Shaw Editorial Board they think Madigan should resign his speakership, citing a bribery scheme with utility giant Commonwealth Edison he was implicated in this summer involving no-work jobs and lobbying contracts that were awarded over eight years to his close associates in exchange for legislation that benefited the company.

Madigan has not been formally charged in the case, and was re-elected in his unopposed race to represent the 22nd District, according to unofficial election results.

Durkin was re-elected on a 33% margin over Democratic challenger Kassem Moukahal to represent the 82nd District, according to unofficial election results.

McCombie was re-elected to her third term by an unofficial margin of 23.2% over Padilla, who lost to

McCombie in 2018 by a margin of 17.3%.

McCombie also chairs the Illinois House Republican Organization, the official campaign arm of the House Republicans, which functions to elect candidates, fundraise and run campaigns.

While House Republicans did take back two seats, if unofficial election results hold, the minority party did not come close to weakening the super majority of House Democrats, who were expecting to use their influence in the fall veto session to push forward broad criminal justice legislation and ethics reform.

Those policy efforts likely won’t come to fruition until the winter, however, because the six-day fall veto session, set to begin Nov. 17, was canceled Tuesday by legislative leaders due to heightened concerns over presence of the coronavirus in Springfield.

The next General Assembly is scheduled to be inaugurated on Jan. 13.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi nominated Bustos to the position, made vacant after former co-chairwoman and Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro stepped down to run for chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee.

Pelosi selected Bustos because she is a “leader of great integrity and inspiration,” and is “strengthened

The nomination comes after Bustos, 59, announced on Monday that she would not seek to continue heading the Democratic Congressional

Campaign Committee, the official campaign arm of the party.

That decision followed a unexpectedly narrow capture of a fifth term in the 17th District over Republican challenger Esther Joy King, and was shadowed by an election in which House Democrats failed to expand their majority.

Bustos said she would not seek re-election to the DCCC position so she could “focus her efforts on legislating.”

Her assignment to the committee, tasked with recommending committee assignments to the Democratic Caucus and developing the House’s

policy agenda, is largely a manifestation of that explanation.

Bustos in a release said she was “humbled and honored” for the nomination.

“Throughout my career, I have sought to lift up voices from the middle of our country – families in our cities and towns, communities that make up rural America and hardworking people all across our nation,” Bustos said in the release.

Bustos will also continue to serve on the House Appropriations Committee and on the House Committee on Agriculture.

OBITUARIES Hillary J Wagenecht-Albrecht, 41, of Dixon, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020, at Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital, Dixon.

Hillary was born October 28, 1979, in Morrison, the daughter of Dale Wagenecht and Judy Novotny.

She was beautiful, funny, sarcastic, wildly inappropriate at times, tenacious, persistent, a note taker, a lover of all animals, kind, compassionate, very forward and blunt on every opinion she had.

Hillary would tell you she loved you 10 times before hanging up the phone. She would send text that could have been letters, being incredibly specific, inquisitive and always ending them in the same way. “All my love forever and always no matter what.... Xo.” She had the most beautiful blonde hair that smelled of Pantene. She loved cooking and eating food, she loved hanging out with her group of friends from high school, whom she cherished. Her laughter was infectious and her smile truly lit up the room. She loved music and went to many concerts, fairs, flea markets and swap meets.

She loved cars, trucks and going to car shows. Hillary loved her family so much especially her nieces and nephews and enjoyed joking around with them, doing voices and pretending, playing and having tea parties with them. She would talk for hours on the phone wanting to hear every single event in their lives. Hillary especially loved her dogs Cow and Ily. She signed all of her cards including her dog Cow in every letter, card or note. Hillary loved being outside in the sunshine and helping her mom in the garden. She was such a kind and loving soul.

She was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend to many. Hillary is going to missed tremendously from those of us that had the privilege of knowing her.

Robert was born May 30, 1933, in Sterling, IL, to Carl H. and Bessie M. (McKee) Bierman. He attended Lincoln grade schools of rural Whiteside County and Morrison High School. Bob served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Donna M. Landheer on November 18, 1956, in Our Savior Lutheran Church in Sterling, IL. Bob was a farmer and also worked for the Whiteside County Highway Department for many years.

Arthur was born on July 9, 1937 in Morrison, the son of George and Pauline (Smith) Dykema. He was a veteran of the US Army. Arthur married Sherry Rick on February 4, 1967 in Morrison. He was employed as a letter carrier with the US Postal Service for many years. After retiring from the postal service, he was employed at Sterling Walmart for 25 years.

Donald was born October 30, 1935, in Union Grove Township, to George and Flora (Post) Holesinger. He was educated in the rural Whiteside County schools.

Don married Audrey E. VanZuiden on March 27, 1958, at Second Reformed Church in Fulton, IL. He served as a medic in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960 at Fort Lewis in Washington and Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Don was a farmer all his life until retiring in 1998. He sold Pioneer seed corn for twenty-five years while farming and after retiring he worked for Wilson Bull operating the combine for many years.

He enjoyed working on his John Deere antique tractors and loved bowling especially when he bowled a perfect 300 game in 1997 in Fulton. Don served as an elder and deacon at Second Reformed Church in Fulton and also had played on the church softball team. Don and Audrey enjoyed spending their winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama. They traveled to many states throughout the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. For over 40 years they had a family vacation at Mogasheen Resort in Wisconsin and for 11 years Don enjoyed taking fishing trips to Ontario, Canada.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; one daughter, Kristi (Tom) Huizenga of Morrison; two sons, Tim (Lori) Holesinger of Farmington, NM and Matt Holesinger of Roscoe; four grandchildren, Allie (Brian) Loschen, Kaylie Huizenga, Zackary Holesinger, and Libbie Holesinger; four great grandchildren, Mason, Landon, Lucas, and Adalyn Loschen; and a brother Richard (Judy) Holesinger of Fulton.

She attended grade school and graduated from high school in Sycamore. On August 30, 1957 she married Melvin B. Ilsley in Sycamore. He passed away on May 14, 2019. Jeanette was a homemaker and stay at home mother. She was a talented painter and always loved animals, especially dogs. In her younger days she was active in Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore. Her faith was very important to her. Jeanette enjoyed riding in the truck with her husband, Melvin, who was an over-the-road trucker. She also enjoyed traveling and camping with her family.

Spencer J. Knox, 83, of Resthave Home in Morrison, IL, died Friday, November 13, 2020 at Resthave Home.

Spencer was born March 3, 1937 in Morrison, to Russell and Marian (Schuler) Knox. He was educated in the Morrison

grade schools and was a graduate of Morrison High School. He served in the Army National Guard. He married Janice Dykhuis on November 29, 1958; they later divorced.

On August 10, 1963 he married Lynn McGaan in Altona, IL. Spencer owned and operated Spencer’s Automotive in Morrison over 40 years. He also co-owned and operated O.K. Trucking in Morrison and was partial owner of the FS gas station, Valvoline Quick Lube, and In Town Storage Units. Spencer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morrison. He served on the advisory board of Community State Bank, was president of Whiteside Energenetics Inc. and was a member of the Anchorage Boat Club in Clinton, IA. He and Lynn enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi River with their many boating friends. Early in his life he enjoyed drag racing with Arnie “The Farmer” Beswick and racing his own car.

He and his wife Lynn spent much time traveling the United States in their RV, as well as vacationing at their condo on Marco Island, FL. Spencer was quick with a smile and a joke. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether on the racetrack or Mississippi River. He enjoyed practical jokes and wasn’t shy to laugh at himself. His generous spirit and twinkling eyes will be sorely missed.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lynn; one son, Tim (Marlene) Knox of Morrison; two daughters, Kim (Ben) Becker of Crystal Lake, IL, Kristy (Joe) Brandon of Clarkston, MI; eight grandchildren, Justin Knox, Jennifer Knox, Jason Knox, Matthew Becker, Angela Becker, Samantha Brandon, Spencer Brandon, and Sawyer Brandon; three great grandchildren, Demarkus Turner, Zayvean Ross, and Billy Clark; one sister, Marilyn (Bud) Gothard of Ozark, MO. Patricia was born July 17, 1936 to Edward and Betty (Olinger) Carpenter.

She graduated from Fulton High School, Fulton. She played on the women’s basketball team, was involved in many activities and was Homecoming Queen. After graduation she married David Walker. They moved to Garret, IN, where they owned and operated Walker Cottage Patsy. While in Garret, she was a teacher and director of the Head Start program, and PE teacher at the local elementary school.

Pat was an active member of the Garret Presbyterian Church where she served as a youth leader and teacher.

After Davids’ untimely death she moved to Sebring, FL where she and her second husband owned and operated a small restaurant. Later she moved to Tulsa, OK and then to New Jersey, South Carolina and New Mexico.

WILLIAM “BILL” THOMAS

My grandfather, William “Bill” Wayne Thomas of Fenton, made his last of 96 trips around the sun on Friday, November 13, 2020. In those years, he experienced the depression, WWII, numerous twirls on the dance floor, and 70 years of marriage with the love of his life (and occasional adversary), my late grandma, Lois.

He was a farmer, builder, gardener, dancer, winemaker, world traveler, WWII veteran, and friend to anyone he met.

He could identify trees by their leaves and birds by their songs - knowledge that captivated us grandchildren when we were kids, and reminds me still to cherish my surroundings, and nurture my kids’ curiosities. He read voraciously, was a wonderful conversationalist, and trivia teammate.

Like many other young people in the Erie area, I was fortunate to work with him during the summers of my adolescence. I have forgotten many of the carpentry skills he shared (except measure twice, cut once), but I will always trea-

sure the importance of cookie breaks, his gentle correction if I made a mistake, and the way he treated people - with kindness, dignity, and respect. He supported his family in all their endeavors, and at 83 he and my mom traveled to Mongolia to visit my wife Ashley and me there as Peace Corps volunteers.

As he leaves this earth, I think he would want us all to be humble, kind, and to show the ones we love that we care with our presence. Safe travels, Grandpa. You will not be forgotten by any of us.

Written by his grandson, Mike Burden Bill was born September 1, 1924 in Erie, the son of Wayne and Ella (Sorbeck) Thomas. He married Lois Jeanne Johnson on August 19, 1950 in Davenport. They settled in Erie where he farmed and did carpenter and repair work on homes and farms. He enjoyed his family and was actively involved in his grandchildren’s activities and lives.

Celebrating diversity, promoting peace at Riverdale

Riverdale Education Foundation With much appreciation to Becky Butterfield, Riverdale Elementary School was recently given 120 books along with art supplies as part of the “Celebrate Diversity” Project.

Rev. Butterfield, Youth and Family Life Pastor at the Port Byron First United Methodist Church, said, “the ‘Celebrate Diversity’ book project for Riverdale Elementary came out of my broken heart over racial injustice. The deep division has caused so much harm to so many people for multiple generations. I knew ‘thoughts and prayers’ were not enough, and I knew I was being called to take positive, action steps toward planting seeds of change, love and acceptance somehow, somewhere.”

“I have a deep love for children and encourage them to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. I feel passionately that God has placed me in the Riverdale community to serve and love all children, youth, families, and our educators. I also believe books are powerful tools that can and do have a huge impact on young, growing minds. This ‘Celebrate Diversity’ book drive seemed like the most tangible, action focused way for me to do more than offer my ‘thoughts and prayers’ toward a more just, inclusive, kind world in a way that would benefit our beloved Riverdale children and community.”

“For this ‘Celebrate Diversity’ Book Drive, my desire was to include as many BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) authors as possible and have a mixture of stories that involved various BIPOC as main characters with exposure to various cultures. While the main focus was to increase the number of books in the classroom libraries about BIPOC people, books about people with different abilities and needs, as well as books that had themes of general kindness and inclusion for all were also included.”

“I believe the more children have the opportunity to learn about people who have a different race, ability, or background than them, the more likely they will be able, willing and open to include, befriend, respect, listen to, and learn from all people, no matter what. I hope these books will add to the availability of tools and resources that the teachers already have and help to enhance what they are already doing to teach love, kindness, and inclusivity to all. I’m hoping by

Pastor Becky said that prior to sharing her idea with others and asking for donations and support, she talked with several Riverdale teachers, and actively involved parents with this project idea.

All of them were encouraging and supportive. In addition, all books were donated by Riverdale parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends.

The Riverdale Education Foundation also gave a grant to purchase books.

She received feedback from parents who were grateful for this project because of the negative experiences from racial remarks their children had faced in the past from peers in our schools. One mother, who Butterfield did not know prior to this project, expressed deep appreciation and affirmation that she was raising her children in the right community because seeing this project out there, and so supported by the community, helped her to know that her children mattered too.

Pastor Becky adds, “I know this little project will not even begin to get us to a place of healing from the hundreds of years of deep harm that has been done to BIPOC in people in this country. But being silent is

who are different than you. Watch movies as a family that help you have conversations with your children about what has been done in this country to exclude and harm BIPOC. Ruby Bridges said, “Kids know nothing about racism. They’re taught that by adults.” We see the harm that has been done because of racism. Imagine the good that could be done if we seek to actively teach our kids about love, inclusion, acceptance, and seeking justice for all.”

Three Rivers basketball teams play the waiting game Practice may begin soon - or it might not

eingles@saukvalley.com Fillies coach Kerry Grim understands just how difficult the situation is for her basketball players.

First the IHSA issues guidelines on how to safely conduct practice, then the IDPH says basketball is highrisk and shouldn’t move ahead.

One day you’re about to start a season, the next day you might not.

Morrison just completed its allowable contact days on Oct. 30.

Practice might begin – or it might not. There is also no telling when an actual game might tip off.

“It’s difficult to get your seniors to buy in because they don’t know if you’re going to be able to play or not, if you’re going to have a season,” Grim said.

The Three Rivers is a conference divided, with Newman and St. Bede told by their respective Catholic dioceses to put basketball on hold and Sherrard moving ahead. The rest of the teams play a waiting game.

“Unlike other conferences around us, we have not tried to have a carte blanche answer,” Morrison athletic director Gregg Dolan said. “We’re letting the schools decide what’s best for them in their scenario.”

Other schools are leaving the call up to their school boards, with Morrison’s board meeting tabling the motion. The board will meet again with a chance practice will be able to open the next day, or the chance that everything will be put on hold.

“Everything’s been so fluid, everything’s changed so much since March 13, that I think even the coaches are becoming accustomed to ‘Gosh, what do we have to do now to make this work?’,” Dolan said.

“We’ve put together our practice schedules, we’ve spent a lot of time in preparation for a season to go ahead,” Grim said, “but as of right now, I have no idea if we’re going to be able to go ahead or not.”

Every year, Legends Sports Bar & Grill in Erie holds a Chili Cook-off as part of their Toys for Tots collection in Whiteside County. Due to COVID regulations the event was cancelled this year, but owners Nathan and Dana Schnitzler planned a drive- thru drop off on Saturday, Nov. 14. They were able to fill nearly three boxes with toys while receiving $642 in cash donations from the community. Anyone who donated was also given a ticket for one of 20 raffle prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. Legends will be collecting toys at 921 8th Ave. in Erie until the first week of December.

The full-service salon offers hair care, barbering, waxing, and all types of nail care, including Shellac, dipping powder, acrylics, sculpting, French tips, nail art, and gel or natural nail manicures and pedicures.

Steven Bui and Abbi Martinez opened their shop for business on Oct. 1. The Davenport couple commute to Port Byron every day, both drawn to the charm of the small towns in upper Rock Island County.

Despite opening during the year of COVID, business has been good, and steady. Steven said they didn’t know what to expect coming into a new community, but they’ve had a lot of support.

They look forward to participating in downtown activities and getting to know the area more.

The couple discovered the retail space at 101 N. Main St. this summer after seeing the previous business, Hair Shop, listed for sale on Craigslist.

They drove to Port Byron to check it out and stopped for a meal at Ram’s Riverhouse. After talking to the waitress, they discovered there was no nail salon in town, and any ladies wanting the service had to drive to the cities.

He said the Port Byron location was “perfect, really peaceful, relaxing, and with a priceless view,” making it the good place to start. It’s their first business and despite being a little nervous, he noted, they’ve “managed so far,” especially with all the local support.

Abbi added that they’re having fun doing what they love to do in the tranquil atmosphere they’ve created. The salon is accentuated with plants, a TV that plays different nature scenes, comfortable pedicure chairs, palettes of nail colors, charming décor, and a view of downtown Main Street and the Mississippi River.

“Cutting hair is like an art, and the hair is the canvas,” Steven said of their services. He moved from Vietnam to the United States with his family at age 9, and Abbi grew up in the Quad Cities.

She’s a graduate of Capri College beauty school in Davenport, and Steven of Ray’z Barber Shop school in Moline.

Ongoing specials include $10 haircuts for military members on Mondays, $10 for seniors on Tuesdays, and $10 for kids 10 and under on Wednesdays, by appointment only. They can also host birthday parties for any age.

Medical assistant training starts in January

Students now can start the Black Hawk College Medical Assisting program in January.

The 30-credit-hour program has online lectures with daytime clinical courses.

The entire program can be completed in one calendar year.

Medical assistants work under the supervision of a physician and perform medical office administration and clinical duties. Students gain practical experience by completing two clinical courses plus an internship and seminar.

Students take courses in basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, health insurance and office procedures, pharmacology terminology and calculations, and ethics and law.

Mystery illness and severe COVID in children

Amazingly, people in our country suggested children would not develop COVID-19 or it would not be a serious outbreak. It’s not clear what model they were basing this on, but it is clear that they were not only misinformed but misinformed many other people that may have contributed to complacency and additional outbreaks both in children and adults.

The good news is the majority of these children have done quite well.

Some children may not manifest any obvious symptoms at all. Yet a very small percentage go on to develop and very serious multi system inflammatory syndrome which is abbreviated MIS-C. The early signs of this condition include fever and rashes with abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. It can become a very severe condition in a matter of hours and requires intensive care

and sometimes be fatal.

Children who require MIS-C will need to be admitted to an intensive care unit. Unfortunately, this rare but serious condition can be brewing in a child that has no symptoms.

Furthermore, the potent virus can linger in someone’s stool for up to a month. This changes the model of the virus that has been primarily a respiratory illness. The condition mimics another well-known, but rare, condition knowns as Kawa-

saki’s disease. Kawasaki’s disease tends to affect a younger child of age 2 or less.

The condition of MIS-C tends to infect a child around the average age of 9. The long-term implications of this disease are unknown, But we know that children can get aneurysms from Kawasaki’s disease as well as blood clots and heart attacks at an early age. Being overweight is a definite risk factor. Also a common factor is sub optimal nutrition.
