Introducing FHS B.L.I.N.D. Masonic Lodge soup and sandwich fundraiser Nov. 16 leader Isaac McWilliams Fulton City Lodge No. 189 will hold a soup and sandwich supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Brunch House Restaurant, 1901 Fourth St., Fulton.

The menu for the all-youcan-eat supper will include chili and chicken noodle soup, chicken salad and ham salad sandwiches, cookies, vanilla ice cream and beverages. Carryout will be available.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will help fund the maintenance of the lodge building and charitable donations to the Fulton and Albany communities.

In the past, funds generated

from the lodge’s bi-annual soup suppers have been donated to the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities for Whiteside County veterans and have paid the entrance fee for Fulton High School’s scholastic bowl team to compete in the Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl tournament.

Also, in conjunction with Merton Chapter 356, Order of the Eastern Star, the lodge has donated school supplies to needy children at Fulton Elementary School and nonperishable food items to the Albany Food Pantry and the Fulton/Thomson Food Pantry.

But that didn’t matter to the judges when the very patient Golden retriever – dressed as the scarecrow from the “Wizard of Oz” – flicked his strands of straw to the wind and walked past the judges with his owner, Melinda Verstraete, in tow.

“His name is Franklin Roosevelt,” Verstraete said. “His brother, Thomas Jefferson, is here today, too, as the Cowardly Lion.”

Thomas’ costume was more “wind friendly” as his mane barely moved when strong gusts blew across the Mississippi River along the Port Byron Bike Path.

Frank was one of 35 entries in the Port Byron Pet Costume Parade, which benefited the Geneseo Animal Shelter.

Chris Bradshaw, a member of Port Byron’s Economic Development Committee, was busy registering dogs dressed as dragons, lady bugs and superheroes while snatching paperwork from being whisked away in the wind.

“We just wanted to have an event for our dog community and to stress our beautiful walking path,” she said.

“We are very excited about the turnout and it was such a fun event.”

The contest fee was a donation to the animal shelter.

The contest featured the categories of scariest, cutest, funniest and best owner/pet combo.

The cutest award went to Frank while the scariest award was won by Rio, owned by the Haslinger family of Bettendorf, Iowa.

complete with a pair of sunglasses.

And the best owner/pet combo went to the peacock pair of Harper Houzenga and Boone.

Olive’s Mobile Pet Grooming was also part of the activity offering free nail trims.

Bradshaw said the committee hopes to offer the event again next year.

Clinton Symphony Orchestra to perform Saturday in Sterling The Clinton Symphony Orchestra will perform the second concert of its 70th season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in Centennial Auditorium at Sterling High School.

Music director and conductor Brian Dollinger, now in his 16th season at the helm, has chosen wellknown works by Tchaikovsky, Schubert and Mozart for the performance. Included are Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings ,” the famous “Unfinished Symphony” by Schubert and the overture to Mozart’s final opera “The Magic Flute.”

The orchestra is composed of musicians from a wide area of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois and regularly performs in Clinton, Sterling and Morrison, according to a news release.

For performances in Sterling, the orchestra has teamed with Community State Bank to charter a bus for orchestra patrons from along Route 30. It started as a hedge against bad weather, but has become an enjoyable excursion. From Clinton, the bus picks up passengers in Fulton and Morrison on its way to the concert.

In addition to season tickets, adult tickets for the individual concert are available at the door for $20. Students are admitted to all Clinton Symphony Orchestra concerts free of charge, and a student can get an accompanying adult in for half-price admission at the door.

Scott joined the CAPE (Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education) staff in 2002 as the first Program Director and later as Education Director and for the next twenty years, had a significant impact on CAPE’s programming and research. An internationally recognized arts and education leader, Scott was a planner, researcher, writer, teacher, curator, and collaborator. His work focused on fostering a collective professional development network designed to improve teaching and learning through the arts. Because of Scott, more and more children use and apply contemporary art practices and forms in our schools. Scott worked to establish research as an aesthetic and pedagogical practice, central to teaching and learning and to artmaking through collaboration that resulted in CAPE’s Artist/ Researcher model. Scott helped to write federal, state, and regional grants to fund CAPE’s emergence as Chicago’s pre-eminent arts programming resource. Scott championed

the exhibition and public sharing of student work. Working with staff and teaching artists, he developed CAPE’s exhibition practice.

He worked with many colleagues, teaching artists, and teachers to plan the CAPE Gallery, which was opened in early 2023. Scott’s passion for CAPE’s work was driven by his unshakable belief in the creativity of children.

Throughout his career, Scott shaped how children experienced the arts in schools as a path to change the world one student at a time. Scott built a lasting network of collaborating cultural resources that brings art to thousands and thousands of school children in communities across our region every day. His lasting legacy is defined by the connections he built between museum educators, principals and school administrators, teachers, artists and colleagues who continue to work together to shape how our students grow and interact with art in their classrooms, their community, and their lives.

Arlene was born March 16, 1929, in Fulton, IL, to Joe J. and Helen B. (Vander Vinne) Bielema. She was educated in the Otter Bluff Grade Schools and was a 1946 graduate of Morrison High School. She married Bernard “Bernie” Merema on June 9, 1950, in Fulton,

IL. He died June 15, 2018. Arlene was employed as a receptionist for Dr. Vandermydes and Dr. Jennings. Arlene was a dedicated member of Spring Valley Reformed Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, directed the Memorial Day Plays, and was involved with the Ladies Aide and Missionary Guild. Beyond her church community, she was a valued member of the Wa-Tan-Ye Club of Morrison, IL, and took an active role in the Meals on Wheels program, touching the lives of many through her selfless acts of kindness.

Survivors include two daughters, Sally (Jim) Hamann of Eldridge, IA and Sue (Bill) Maurice of Canton, IL; one son, Steve (Mary Kay) Merema of Rochelle, IL; five grandchildren, Blake Hamann, Todd (Teresa) Hamann, Erin (fiancé, Eli McCormick) O’Flaherty, Steve (Rachel) Merema Jr. and Greg Merema; two step-grandchildren, Hayden (Sidney) Maurice and Laurenn (fiancé, Alec Armstrong) Maurice; six great grandchildren, Gracie and Callan Hamann, Kaitlyn and Jillian Hamann and Gwen and Nora Merema; three step-great-grandchildren; Max Martens and Tate and Trace Maurice.

MORRISON – A former Clinton, Iowa, man accused of raping a woman in Fulton on Sept. 7 was found unfit to stand trial after a mental health evaluation, Branden M. Landry court records show.

Branden M. Landry, 31, and currently homeless, will undergo treatment. A status hear-

ing on his case is set for Jan. 26 in Whiteside County Court.

Landry, who has a history of mental illness, was arrested on a warrant for criminal sexual assault on Sept. 19 in Dixon.

The woman was an acquaintance, Fulton Police Chief Nick Neblung said.

Criminal sexual assault carries four to 15 years in prison.

Landry, who also has lived in Rochelle, has no criminal history in Whiteside County and no felony history in Ogle County, court records show.

Production of nitrogen at the new Nitrin plant near Albany got started in the $23.5 million setup that was completed seven weeks early. Nitrin, owned

by International Minerals and Chemical Corp. and Northern Natural Gas Co. of Omaha, is the first industry to locate on the 2,300-acre Cordova Industrial Park. IMC is the only world supplier of agricultural chemicals producing nitrogen, phosphate and potash.

Volunteer donations to the Harbor Crest Home reached near the $1,000 mark and members of the board of directors expected to receive enough additional contributions to meet the $1,200 original payment on the real estate.

Most of the $1,000 contributed thus far came from the board of directors of 24 men who are organizing the home.

The $76,000 bond issue, which the city approved as part of the payment of $145,000 to Elmer Engelhorn for the Fulton Marina, is now “in limbo,” Mayor Maliszewski said. The City Council took action, which may reopen all phases of the city’s relationship with Engelhorn in renegotiation. The council adopted an ordinance to “pursue” and investigate all phases of the transactions between the city and Engelhorn and to proceed with litigation that might result in a “declaratory” judgment redefining the obligations and the rights of the parties involved.

Voters in the River Bend school district will mark their ballots on a request for a tax increase for the district and also to fill five seats on the board. Two incumbents, Mrs. William Mask, president of the board, and Robert Dykema, secretary, are asking for additional terms. Also asking for additional terms are Mrs. Melvin Willey and Gary Wagner, who is opposed by Charles Kerr.

By STEVEN D. HARRISON, M.D. A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. There may be several types as well as several causes. The usual presentation to the doctor is someone who has noticed a lump or swelling in the throat that seems more prominent than usual. Alternatively, these may be discovered incidentally on a physical examination.

While many goiters are benign, others can be more serious. In addition to blood tests, the doctor may wish to perform a thyroid scan for certain types of goiters. If you have a goiter with unusual lumps, a biopsy

may be obtained.

In areas of the world where iodine is low, goiters may develop because this element is critical to the production of a normal functioning thyroid hormone. Paradoxically, though, too much iodine may cause problems to the thyroid as well.

The treatment of a goiter may encompass a wide variety of approaches depending on the cause, the age of the patient and what the doctor and patient are willing to do.

Sometimes these are simply observed and followed with time.

Many people with thyroid goiters receive a replacement thyroid hor-

mone by mouth with the idea that the goiter has developed because the thyroid gland in normal size had not produced sufficient hormone. It is hoped that the outside or extra hormone would suppress this enlargement and cause the thyroid to function more normally. Of course, the condition must be monitored to make sure that high thyroid does not develop.

High thyroid sometimes may be seen with goiters. Certain phases of goiters may go through periods where they are high at times and low later. Treatment also may cause this as one of the options is thyroid iodine

radiation. This is because extra iodine can have a paradoxical effect, causing suppression of not only the goiter, but the thyroid functions over time. Thus, someone may start out normal to high and over a period of time, maybe even years, end up with low thyroid. This again underscores the need for periodic monitoring.

There also is an option for surgery for some goiters. Of course, there always are trade-offs. Replacement therapy often may be recommended.

One also has to keep in mind that the parathyroids are closely connected with the thyroid and if they also were to be removed may lead to problems.

IHSA CLASS 1A FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFFS: MORRISON 34, FULTON 12

dwussow@shawmedia.com MORRISON – The No. 5-seeded Morrison Mustangs defeated the No. 12-seeded Fulton Steamers 34-12 Saturday afternoon at E.M. Bud Cole Field.

The Steamers (6-4) took control of the game early building a 12-0 lead.

After two three-and-outs on their first two drives, they had two straight touchdown drives.

Fulton junior quarterback Dom Kramer connected with junior tight end Jacob Huisenga on a 50-yard pass down the right sideline to set up the first scoring drive. Senior running back A.J. Boardman cashed in with a 6-yard touchdown run on the next play, giving Fulton a 6-0 lead with 3:39 left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing Morrison possession, the Steamers tackled sophomore running back Brady Anderson short of the first-down marker on a fourthand-2, forcing a turnover on downs at the Morrison 48. They quickly capitalized with a touchdown.

The 52-yard drive was finished by a 1-yard Kramer touchdown run. Fulton took a 12-0 lead with 8:31 remaining in the second quarter.

“We had a really good game plan.

We were able to get some stops on defense. When we got the ball in favorable positions for us, we were able to get to some of the things we wanted to get to,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said. “Their overall team speed was really good and we knew that. We just weren’t able to make plays. They made more plays and big plays and that’s what they are. They’re a big-play team.

They’ve done it all year. And we take four or five plays away from that, the game, maybe it’s a different story. But they made those plays.

“Their speed is for real. They’re a really good football team.”

Morrison shifted the momentum. On the first play of the next drive, Anderson found a gap up the middle, juked out three defenders and ran for a 62-yard touchdown, drawing the Mustangs (9-1) to within 12-7.

“I think it really set the tone that we weren’t going to give up and we were going to give it our all for all four quarters,” Morrison senior fullback-linebacker Carson Strating said. “That was a big play for Brady.”

The Steamers forced a three-and-out later and returned the punt to the Morrison 46, setting up their offense nicely again, but Strating intercepted a Kramer pass over the middle and

returned it 53 yards to the Fulton 5. On the next play, junior quarterback Colton Bielema hit Anderson on a 3-yard touchdown strike. Morrison took a 14-12 lead with 56.1 seconds left in the half.

“That was an awesome play by him,” Anderson said about Strating’s interception. “He jumped the ball, ran it down to their five and managed to push it in [to the end zone].”

After a shaky start to the game, Morrison completely dominated the second half. Opening the third quarter with a 70-yard touchdown drive, it took a 22-12 lead and seized control of the game.

second half appeared to be headed for a three-and-out as Fulton forced a fourthand-2 from the Morrison 38. But Mustangs senior Daeshaun McQueen took a fake punt 37 yards down the right sideline to pick up the first down, then picked up another 15 yards on a wide receiver screen from Bielema. Strating punched in a run from two yards out and ran in the two-point conversion for the 10-point lead with 8:21 left in the third quarter.

“We won’t stop fighting. We don’t panic. We know what we can do,” Anderson said. “We just keep our heads up and keep going.”

“Our team’s really aggressive, and we play as a team for the full four quarters,” Strating said. “We never look down on each other. We just play together as a team.”

Morrison senior defensive back Camden Pruis intercepted a pass late in the third quarter and Anderson followed with an 80-yard touchdown run on the next play. Bielema threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Blake Adams to finish the scoring with 4:34 remaining.

Anderson totaled three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) and rushed for 171 yards on 10 carries.

McQueen caught four passes for 56 yards and had a 37-yard run. Bielema went 7-for-12 passing for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Reynolds Reavy and Karder White each recorded a sack for Morrison.

Kramer passed for 109 yards and rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown, Trevor Tiesman caught two passes for 68 yards, Boardman totaled 51 all-purpose yards (30 rushing, 21 receiving) and a rushing touchdown and Baylen Damhoff added 27 receiving yards and a 57-yard pass for the Steamers.

Round 2 of the playoffs will be 1 p.m.

Saturday at Kewanee-Wethersfield.

Tickets are $6 and the gates will open at 11:30 a.m.

OREGON – Under Liz Green, the Erie-Prophetstown cross country program always has been an environment of caring for one another. That attribute payed dividends as both the boys and girls teams advanced to the IHSA state meet.

“We gave a speech on the bus about the world being full of givers and takers,” Green said. “The message we left them with is be a giver for your team.”

That spiritual message was contagious as every team member, whether competing or not, did all they could to build one another up. One of those was senior Jillian Norman, who was in a boot and couldn’t run because of a potential injury.

“It’s really disappointing for me, but I am so proud and excited for the team,” Norman said.

The boys have qualified before, but this is the first time the girls team will be headed to Detweiller Park in Peoria, site of the state meet.

The top six teams advanced and E-P made it by the narrowest of margins, defeating Rockford Christian 197-199 for the sixth spot.

“It’s crazy,” Green said. “The girls have worked so hard and deserve this.”

It was freshman Sarah Link leading the way with an individual eighthplace finish in a time of 20:23. In a close race for first, Evelyn O’Connor of Seneca beat Emily Downing of Cambridge 19:07-19:09.

For Link, the day was even more special as she celebrated her 15th birthday with some of her best friends.

More critically, she passed three runners in the last mile.

“It’s so much fun being here today and it helps having all the support we do,” Link said.

Finishing in 28th was fellow freshman Jessie Deneve (21:34) on the 3-mile Park West course. Other E-P scorers were junior Chloe Slock (22:20), senior Clara Ashdown (23:08) and freshman Alana Little (23:16).

“Alana’s time was the fastest she’s ever run,” Green said. “She was motivated because her grandmother is dying from cancer.”

Perennial power Winnebago, which took a huge loss to graduation, still took the team title with 99 points. Sectional favorite Sherrard did not make it out of the regional. Its No. 1 runner collapsed before finishing and another runner was absent, thus leaving it with four finishers, one short of what was needed to score as a team, which

Among other area teams, Port Byron Riverdale was eighth, Lanark Eastland 13th and Oregon 18th out of 19 teams.

“Our girls have been trendsetters,” Riverdale coach Kevin Claus said.

“They have not had a full team since 2004 and this is the first time at a sectional for us.”

For Oregon, two-time state qualifier Ella Danhorn finished 37th. The cutoff for individuals not on a qualifying team was 17th place.

The E-P boys had a bit more breathing room than the girls with 126 points for fifth place, compared with 179 for sixth-place Sterling Newman. Rock Island was odd man out with 189.

In a close battle for first between the usual suspects, it was Rockford Christian with 80, Riverdale 86 and Winnebago 92.

Charlie Link paced E-P with a sixthplace showing out of 152 competitors.

Junior Nicolai Martino (16:04) of ’Bago upset senior Weston Forward (16:16) of RC for the individual championship.

For E-P, it was trio of seniors leading the way, with Lucas Dreisbach (17:30) in 23rd and Tyson Skinner (17:45) in 28th joining Link as top scorers.

“I’m in shock,” Link said. “This is my first time going to state since I was in eighth grade.”

E-P went as a team in 2021, but Link was sick. Last year, he missed competing as an individual because of injury.

Gus Schultz and Wyatt Goosens also scored for E-P. The only area individual qualifier was West Carroll sophomore Roscoe Davies, who was 14th in 17:10.

Lucas Schaab (16:59) and Lucas Simpson (17:11) were 11th and 15th for Newman. Joining them as scorers were Wyatt Widolff, Carver Grummert and Zachery DeForest.

“Our No. 6 (DeForest) stepped up for us,” Simpson said.

The regular No. 5 runner, Rico Hernandez, was sick and DeForest played a key role in whether or not the Comets advanced.

“With our No. 5 out, I knew it was going to be tighter than what I thought it would have been.” Newman coach Pat Warkins said. “I can’t complain.

Since 2008, it was the 12th state qualifying as a team, a mark that helps perpetuate tradition.

“A lot of it ends up with kids having that expectation,” Warkins said. “They don’t want to be the ones to let it down.

There’s a lot of difference going down as a team instead of as individuals. It’s not the same if you’re the only one there from your team.”

Riverdale was pleased to qualify after losing four of its five top runners from the 2022 state runner-up squad.

Sophomore Braedon Bode looks to be the next star runner with a fifth place at 16:27.

This is an extremely resilient team,” coach Kevin Claus said. “After losing so much, I wasn’t sure at the start of the season how we would do.”

“Never, ever,” the junior libero said with a smile after her team’s 25-21, 25-17 win. “I was nervous at school, but I think when we moved the lineup it helped our defense out a lot more and we really found that last push.”

That last push came when Coach Stacy Germann, Resse’s mom, changed up the lineup to counter Aurora Christian’s big outside hitter Hope Wagner.

“We stayed last night and we watched. We had hitting charts on her. We adjusted our defensive line. We moved our center back. And in the second game, we moved our lineup. We switched so my big blockers Reese Dykstra and Ava Bowen could be on her. They are our two strongest blockers so we flip-flopped our lineup

and it was much better. We got our hand on it,” Coach Germann said.

Germann was pleased with her team’s effort en route to the regional win.

“I think they did great. This is something they have wanted for a very long time,” Coach Germann said. “They’ve worked for it since they’ve been in the second grade. I am just very happy they could be rewarded with this championship.”

Leaders for the Steamers were Annaka Hackett with six kills and three digs, Brooklyn Brennan with five kills, nine digs and seven assists, Miraya Pessman with eight assists, three kills and four digs, Ava Bowen with four kills and Resse Germann with seven digs and four assists.

With the win, Fulton advanced to the Eastland Sectional to face Lena-Winslow in the semifinal at 7 p.m. Monday.

The sectional championship is slated for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1. The sectional winner advances to the Pecatonica SuperSectional at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3.

Church of the Cross Fall Bazaar and Luncheon is Nov. 4

The Church of the Cross annual Fall Bazaar and Luncheon will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the church, located at 22621 Routes 2 and 92, Port Byron.
