Rep. Cheri Bustos said it was like walking back in time. But once renovated, the old building will be a part of the town’s future.

Bustos, a Democrat who represents the 17th District, joined a group of local citizens for a tour on Friday of the Fidelity-Drives building at 1009 First St. She was accompanied by organizers hoping the future site of a community center would gain federal support.

The building is undergoing renovations to make it a prime destination for Fulton while providing cultural and economic benefits to the city.

A $350,000 Rebuild Illinois grant was awarded to the Fulton Historical Society in May 2021 to fund renovations on the building. The grant was sponsored by State Senator Neil Anderson and the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity.

Construction on the building is underway. A new roof, new heating and air conditioning, structural enhancements including an elevator to improve ADA access join improved plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems among the first phase of the plan.

Once that work is done, the renovation committee expects the rest of the remodel, such as the community classrooms and learning center, to go much quicker.

The historical society president, Barb Mask, and former Fidelity employee Curt Temple led Bustos on the tour, detailing the plans for various rooms while pointing out historical components such as a dumbwaiter system, vaults, safes, radiator heating, vintage wallpaper, an old gymnasium, and the boiler room.

Bustos was intrigued by the building’s potential for Fulton, saying it had an interesting history. “It’s a little bit of walking back in time,” she said of the building’s interior.

When Bustos asked how she could help, Mask said they’re looking for federal matching funds for the project. The historical society is using donor funds to pay for contractors, because commerce department requires a matching revenue source.

Mask said that the building will fill many needs in Fulton, from archiving to education to providing rental space for large gatherings.

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos was asked to tour the facility in hopes the committee to renovate the building can secure a federal grant. They’ve already received $350,000 in a grant from the state, are hoping to match that with donations.

1912 and sits along the dike of the Mississippi River, adjacent to the authentic de Immigrant Windmill and Windmill Cultural Center. The building was the home office for Fidelity Life Insurance Association for 62 years, and Drives LLC., an agriculture chain manufacturer, for 40 years.

An addition was constructed in 1925, which provided upper-level offices and meeting rooms. An exercise room in the lower level is still open to members of the public.

Drives LLC donated the property to the City of Fulton in 2010. After remaining vacant for nearly a decade and with a vote to tear it down, the City Council then agreed to sell the building to the Fulton Historical Society in April 2019.

The center will be open to tourists and the community, with plans to be a central hub for the annual Dutch Days Festival, plus Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics classes, fine arts exhibits, a genealogy center, Dutch and Mississippi River displays, recreational activities, and a reception room with panoramic views of the river. The renovation committee continues to seek donors and funders to support the project.

“We’ll do what we can to help,” Bustos told the grateful group. The group gave the congresswoman some Dutch pastries before the tour concluded.

Fulton will be getting a brewpub next year after the city council approved a bid for the land during their continuation meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The council authorized the sale of municipally owned real estate to Fulton residents Manreet and Melanie Kalyan for $3,001, plus $1,500 to defray the seller’s cost. Theirs was the only bid received at the last meeting for the vacant lot at the intersection of 4th St. and 10th Ave. The couple plan to build a brewpub on the downtown lot, along with a half kitchen for food service. They told the council their plan is to offer craft brews, appetizers, wine, cocktails, and other food and drink specials. “Start small, think big,” said Melanie of their goals for the prime location.

Any parking spaces designated near the brewery will be available for all patrons to the downtown district, the council and the couple agreed.

The Kalyan’s hope to break ground in spring of 2022 and open later in the fall.

Alderman Barb Mask asked for specifics of the brewpub plans, but

the Kalyan’s declined to offer more details at the time, such as the business name, saying they want to tie the brewery into the local scene and have it to be a surprise to the community.

Melanie said she was born and raised in Fulton, and her grandparents Henry and Doris Kramer previously owned and published the Fulton Journal. She is an associate Human Resources Manager and Manreet is a pharmacist.

When the council took the vote, Mask and Dan Nederhoff voted no due to the lack of presentation to the council, though both were supportive of a new downtown business. Mayor Wendy Ottens said it was an awesome idea and one that members of countywide economic development meetings were “jealous of,” before giving her yes vote.

The other item up for a vote was to amend the council’s meeting dates from one meeting a month back to two. Mask said the council serves the people and two meetings a month ensures timely action. Others on the council felt that they could call a special meeting if need be, and preferred the one meeting a month format. In the vote to keep the meeting schedule as is, both Mask and Nederhoff voted no.

The descendants of Clay and Florance Cox gathered on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Heritage Park in Erie.

There were 32 family members present.

The family member closest was Terry and Kris Cox of Erie and the farthest was Patricia Martin from San Diego, CA. Families were represented from Erie, East Moline, Geneseo, Port Byron, Cordova, Rock Island, Prophetstown, Rochelle, Colona, Rock Falls, Atkinson, and Mansfield in Illinois. Out-of-state families were Patricia Martin of San Diego, CA; Fay and Dave Haan of Cable, WI; and Danny Martin of Ashland City, TN. The oldest member attending was Jim Johnson, 91, and the youngest was Sorn Hoover, 3.

Food, fun and a lot of catching up was had by all.

This year’s hosts were Terry and Kris Cox and Travis and Tiffany Cox, both from Erie.

The 2022 host will be Peter Rebenar from Port Byron.

First Reformed Church carries on missions at home For more than two decades, First Reformed Church of Fulton has sent teams to Grace Covenant Ministries in Annville, Kentucky. For the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic had put a halt to those plans, but this year, the servants at First Reformed Church would not be denied the chance to serve. They served people locally who had a need. The group caulked a shed, trimmed bushes, weeded flower beds, washed screens and windows, raked yards, cleaned out gutters, cleaned out rafters and did many other jobs. NEWS BRIEFS SVCC to present ‘Macbeth’ on Oct. 23

Sauk Valley Community College invites the public to the fall play “Macbeth.” The production will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the SVCC Riverside Lawn Firepit, located behind the Dillon Mall. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

MORRISON – An idea that began as a doodle on a napkin five years ago and morphed into a $20.5 million Morrison Community Hospital expansion is culminating in an open house Oct. 24.

After two years of sawing and hammering, digging and pouring, painting and polishing, the 80,000-square-foot expansion/renovation at MCH, 303 N. Jackson St., is complete and right on time.

The project included a new helipad; a new emergency department featuring five additional bays on the north side of the building, one of which is a trauma bay; an ambulance canopy; and an additional operating room on the east side of the hospital along Jackson Street.

There’s a new three-level facility on the south side with control room and maintenance equipment storage on the first floor, a conference room/board room and rehab department on the second floor and eight new medical surgical rooms on the top floor.

Existing offices were remodeled, and billing and medical records got new offices, as did many doctors. The old doctors offices now are waiting rooms.

The rebirth of the nonprofit, cityowned hospital grew from modest beginnings. More than five years ago during a chat in the cafe, MCH Board Chairman Don Beswick drew a what-if

expansion design on a napkin. Chats continued and the plans were redrawn on cardboard, then transferred to graph paper. In October 2016, the hospital announced plans to build a $6 million ED expansion and fundraising began in earnest.

At the same time, a feasibility study was conducted that determined, to

everyone’s surprise, “you’re not aiming big enough,” Marketing Director Mick Welding said. What was needed was a new, larger space for orthopedic surgeries, the study said.

The $6 million expansion became a $20 million expansion that the community is invited to tour at the open house, which will be from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 24. A ribbon-cutting will take place at 12:45 p.m., and there will be live music, meals and desserts.

More than 1,000 people are expected to attend, including state Reps. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, and Neal Anderson, R-Rock Island.

The expansion also applies to staff.

Born: April 2, 1931 in Newton Township, IL Died: October 9, 2021 in Morrison, IL ROLAND “ROLLIE” J. VANZUIDEN, 90, of Morrison, IL, passed away peacefully at Resthave Home in Morrison on October 9, 2021, surrounded by family.

Funeral services for Roland VanZuiden will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 15, 2021, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with Ken Renkes officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. Memorials have been established to Resthave Home and Windsor Manor.

Rollie, a twin to brother Jay, was born April 2, 1931, in Newton Township to Henry and

Maggie (VanOosten) VanZuiden. Rollie was educated at the Garden Plain School but finished and graduated from 8th grade in Mt. Carroll. He married Ramona M. Holesinger on October 26, 1951, in Morrison. They lived in the Mt. Carroll area and then moved to Morrison. Rollie had multiple jobs over his lifetime but his true passion was driving truck. He was a member of the Morrison Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed his family, taking many trips with his wife, playing cards with friends, visiting with farmers, breakfast at KJ’s with the guys and water balloon fights at the yearly family gathering on the 4th of July.

Survivors include his wife, Ramona; two daughters, Cheryl (Hank) Batterink of Wyoming, Ontario, Canada and Robin (Jeff) Brands of Morrison; two sons, Henry (Deb) VanZuiden of Sun City West, AZ and Keith (Jen) VanZuiden of Maricopa, AZ; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Jay VanZuiden of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents and one great-grandchild.

Marlyn was born November 3, 1934, in Clinton, IA, to John J. and Josephine (Damhoff) Faber. He was educated in Thomson grade schools and was a graduate of Thomson High School. He served in the

Army National Guard. Marlyn married Mary Jane Zuidema on June 5, 1957, in Fulton. He was employed as an Executive Vice President at Fulton State Bank for 32 years. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Fulton. He served on the Central Bank Board of Directors, Fulton Kiwanis Club and the Schmaling Public Library Board. He helped with delivering Meals on Wheels, Revolving Loan Committee and the Regional School Board. Marlyn was a trustee of the Foundation of D.S. Flikkema. He was a charter member of the Fulton Country Club. Marlyn cherished time spent with his friends, great grandchildren and playing golf.

Marlyn is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Cheryl (Tim Graves) Piercy of Clinton; one son, Randal (Sue) Faber of Rochelle, IL; four grandchildren, Jessica (Matthew) Birdsley, Sarah (Andrew) Whiting, Emily (Nathan) Shepard and Aaron (Stephanie) Piercy; seven great grandchildren, Braden, Madison, Brynlee, Austin, Brooklyn, Molly and Logan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Health department gets nearly $645,000 in federal COVID-19 relief funds

The Whit es ide Coun ty Healt h Department was awarded $644,936 from a pool of $35 million in federal American Rescue Plan money divvied up between 42 community health centers in Illinois.

The money is earmarked for agencies “to modernize their health care

infrastructure and enhance their work to address health disparities in underserved communities,” members of Illinois’ congressional delegation said in a news release announcing the award.

The county runs a federally funded community health clinic at 1300 W. Second St. in Rock Falls.

“CHCs will use this funding for COVID-19-related capital needs, constructing new facilities, renovating

and expanding existing facilities to enhance response to pandemics and purchasing new state-of-the-art equipment, including telehealth technology, mobile medical vans and freezers to store vaccines,” delegation members said in the release.

The American Rescue Plan Act, passed in March, provides $1.9 trillion to help speed recovery from the health and economic effects of the pandemic.

The Morrison Community High School Class of 1966 celebrated its 55th reunion Friday, Oct. 1, and Saturday, Oct. 2.

The class began the weekend celebration with a meetand-greet at Double G Saloon in Morrison, where members and guests reminisced.

Women from the class enjoyed breakfast Saturday, Oct. 2, at The Family Chef in Morrison. The day ended with the reunion at Triple P BBQ in Rock Falls. About 22 class members and 10 guests attended. Members traveled from Tucson, Arizona, and Ashville, North Carolina.

Fall trout season now open at 59 sites throughout state The 2021 Illinois fall trout fishing season opened Oct. 16 at 59 ponds, lakes and streams throughout the state.

Anglers can keep a daily catch limit of five trout.

The Illinois Catchable Trout Program is funded by those who use the program through the sale of inland trout stamps. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources stocks more than

80,000 rainbow trout each year in bodies of water where trout fishing is permitted during the fall season. An additional 80,000 trout are stocked for the spring season, which begins in April.

1961: Unruly crowd marches across Lyons bridge to Fulton 60 Years

Oct. 18, 1961

Contracts have been let by the Board of Education of Fulton Community High School for building and equipping an addition to the bus garage located on high school property. The low bid came from George Wiebenga, a Fulton contractor, with a bid of $11,000.

A crowd of about 400 to 500 marched across the Lyons bridge after the snake dance in Clinton, Iowa. A Clinton officer alerted Officer Reedy and he was at the tollhouse when they got there. He asked them where they were going and was told, “We’re going to tear Fulton apart and cross the south bridge back to Clinton.” Reedy called four other officers to help. A youth swung at Officer Van Dellen, Reedy said, and Van Dellen responded with one blow with a blackjack. This seemed to discourage the marchers and convince them that the Fulton officers meant business, so they returned to Clinton.

50 Years

Oct. 20, 1971

Albany United Methodist Church held groundbreaking ceremonies for a new sanctuary and educational unit.

The first shovel was turned over on the 3 1/2-acre building site, marking the

beginning of construction of a $120,000 all steel structure. Harold “Bud” Burns, lay leader of the church, turned over the first spade of dirt.

The Fulton City Council voted to accept the low bid of $109,970 by Lakin Construction Co. of Clinton, Iowa, for construction of a new boat harbor for Fulton.

40 Years

Oct. 21, 1981

Golfer of the week is Tim Holl, who played first man all year. His high finishes for the year were second at conference, first at district, tied for sixth at sectionals and a sixth-place finish at the state tournament. Holl had the best and lowest average of 38.5.

If the Fulton City Council approves an ordinance it has asked the city attorney to prepare, Fulton residents soon will be paying $75 instead of $15 for having city water service extended to a new home and $125 instead of $15 for city sewer service extended to a new home.

30 Years

Oct. 9, 1991

The National Fire Safety Council awarded the Fulton Fire Protection District with a special plaque for the depart-

ment participating 10 years in the council’s program. Accepting the plaque were Fulton firemen Steve Meyer, Boyd Van Dellen and Ken Houzenga.

Mrs. Anni Johnson of Fulton is a representative of Trans Designs, a new business that opened in the Clinton area offering interior decoration products and free consultation service for homes and offices. She earned a diploma in creative home decorating from LaSalle Extension University in 1981 and has completed additional studies from the University of Illinois and training with Trans Designs.

Oct. 17, 2001

Although no anthrax was detected, two businesses in Fulton got a bit of a scare proving the city could be a target.

The Fulton Journal received a letter that was deemed dangerous. Police made an examination of the envelope in which a skull and crossbones were noticed on the inside contents. Eagle River Liquor also received an unusual envelope. It contained some sort of vial.

Final preparations are being made by the congregation of Fulton Presbyterian Church to move into their new home. Carpets have been installed,

cabinets have been hung and walls have been painted. A new organ has been purchased and will be ready for its first performance Sunday, Oct. 28.

The service will begin at the current church and midway through the service the congregation will drive to the new location at 311 N. Ninth Street, where the remainder of the service will be conducted.

Ray Borgman presented the Kiwanian of the Year award to Ron Vogel.

Nominator Borgman said, “Ron is there every week and serves our club as one of the two secretaries. He spearheads all the projects at Heritage Canyon, he helps with recycling projects and he delivers mobile meals. Ron never lets any physical impairment he has interfere with his service to our club.”

City records, stored in a vault at Fulton City Hall, have been donated to the Fulton (Martin House) Museum. The records were no longer needed or used by administrative staff, but serve as a resource for genealogy. City Administrator Randy Balk handed over the historic records to Fulton Historical Society members John Wierema and Harvey Geerts.

Celiac disease or gluten sensitive enteropathy is discussed

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Celiac disease, also known as celiac sprue or gluten sensitive enteropathy, is a condition involving the intestines.

With this condition, the intestines swell as a reaction to a protein called gluten that is found in wheat, barley and rye.

The condition often is inherited. It may take a trigger to set off the condition, such as a virus, major surgery or extreme stress. Occasionally, it is linked to other conditions such as thyroid disease and diabetes.

Early in life, babies may present

with diarrhea and inadequate weight gain. Older children and adults may have diarrhea or greasy stools, occasional constipation or hard stools.

Some have only gas or bloating. This makes the condition look like the more common irritable bowel syndrome.

Heartburn and mouth ulcers sometimes are associated. Some people have an itchy rash called dermatitis.

Anemia may be associated with the condition, especially iron deficiency anemia. Osteoporosis frequently is seen. Some cancers and lymphomas are common in people with celiac disease.

The condition is first suspected on

clinical grounds that do not respond to treatments for other common conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.

Your doctor may send you to a specialist known as a gastroenterologist for scoping and possibly biopsies. If you have a skin rash, a dermatologist may be helpful.

Also keep in mind that today’s bread and other products may contain a newer type of gluten than what is tested. The upshot is that a negative test for gluten does not mean that you’re not sensitive to the modern products.

The main treatment is to remove gluten from your diet. This means

avoiding wheat, barley and rye. On the other hand, products made of rice, corn or soy flower are safe to eat if no gluten has been added to them. Unfortunately, many foods have hidden gluten in their preparation. Most people will feel better within a few months of being on a gluten-free diet. In fact, staying on such a diet may undo most, if not all, of the damage caused by the condition.

The process needs to be maintained lifelong to lessen the risk for not only the symptoms but also osteoporosis, cancers, anemia, etc.

Morrison makes the plays to top Riverdale TROY E. TAYLOR

ttaylor@shawmedia.com Morrison put the ball into the hands of a pair of sophomores – Carson Strating and Chase Newman – and they didn’t disappoint.

The Mustangs beat Riverdale 34-14 on Friday in Three Rivers Conference play. Morrison won for the second time this season, while Riverdale remains winless.

“Credit to these guys, because things haven’t always gone our way this year,” said Morrison coach Steve Snider. “Ball has bounced the wrong way. We haven’t played well.

Things have been against us a couple of times. Now it’s nice to have one pay off.”

Snider said it was the playbook work of Strating and Newman that earned the trust of their coach and teammates.

“They came to my room every morning this week for a half-hour, and we sat down and digested some tape and we looked at things they were going to get,” he said. “Lo and behold, two of the guys that had some of the biggest nights tonight were those guys.

“We’ve got two special kids.”

Strating had 23 carries for 104 yards, and he scored twice, on a 3-yard run and on his only pass reception.

Newman, a receiver, was the favorite target of quarterback Danny Mouw. He had six catches for 95 yards.

But it was his pass reception in the end zone as the first half expired that was the most electrifying play.

From the 26, Mouw took the snap with 2.9 seconds on the clock and tossed it to where two receivers tracked in on the ball. Harassed by defenders, Newman leaped up and hauled in Mouw’s pass.

It not only put Morrison ahead 28-14 at half, it set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Morrison’s defense twice sacked Riverdale’s quarterback, and also covered two fumbles.

Morrison added one more score in the second half. From the 3, Alex Anderson took the handoff and ran to the outside, then broke for the end zone.

Anderson finished with 13 carries and 117 yards.

The first half had more give and take, as Riverdale tried to answer each time Morrison scored.

Morrison scored again early in the second period, as Strating ran it in from the 3-yard line. The point-after attempt failed.

Mouw, who completed his first six passes, then connected from 6 yards out Strating at 5:08 of the second quarter.

With 1:03 left, Hugart heaved the ball to Cole Jennings, who caught it on the run and raced down field for a 79-yard touchdown. The point after run was good.

That’s when Morrison answered as time expired in the first half. It covered Riverdale’s attempt on an onside kick, then a 15-yard run by Thomas Dauphin and good runs by Anderson put Morrison within striking distance.

The teams close out their schedules next week. Riverdale is home against Sherrard, while Morrison is on the road against Erie-Prophetstown.

Fulton jumped out to a 28-0 lead before EPC’s Kellen Henze connected with Owen Rogers on a 3-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 28-6 at halftime.

The Steamers then scored twice more for a 42-6 lead before Maddux Hayden ran in from 4 yards out for the Wildcatz’s second score.

Henze was 7-for-14 passing for 74 yards, but was limited to nine yards

rushing on seven carries.

Erie-Prophetstown 25, Monmouth-Roseville 16: The Panthers clinched at least a share of the Three Rivers West title for the first time in program history with a win on the road.

Trailing 8-7 at halftime, Kolby Franks scored on a long touchdown run on the second play of the third quarter to give E-P (6-2) the lead, then he scored again after a Monmouth-Roseville turnover for a 19-8 lead just 3:20 into the second half.

The Clippers scored 93 points to defeat runner-up Monticello by eight points. Rock Falls was sixth (188), Newman took seventh (212), Polo placed 18th (45), and Eastland finished 20th (538) in the field that included 166 runners from 36 teams. Erie-Prophetstown, Bureau Valley, Morrison and Oregon did not field full teams.

Amboy-LaMoille’s Brock Loftus finished fourth in 15:58.6, while Ian Eller placed eighth (16:44.3) and Kyler McNinch took 10th (16:51.8).
