Pruis has been part of the fair community for nearly five decades, first competing in horse speed events in 1975. Over the years, she has placed numerous times in barrel racing and pole bending and remains an active participant in the speed show.

SVCC president announces his retirement
Hellmich Leadership Legacy Campaign launched to benefit the school’s Impact Program
By BRANDON CLARK bclark@shawmedia.com
Sauk Valley Community College
President David Hellmich announced Thursday that he will retire in May 2026. Hellmich, who began his presidency at SVCC in 2015, is the college’s sixth president since its founding 60 years ago. Under his leadership, SVCC expanded academic programs, modernized campus facilities and launched initiatives, including the Impact Program that provides eligible Sauk Valley-area high school students with up to three years of tuition and fees in exchange for volunteer service.
He also led SVCC through several major challenges, including the 2016–2017 Illinois state budget crisis – during which SVCC continued its adult education programs – and the COVID-19 pan-
demic, ensuring smooth transitions to remote learning and services. His efforts were recognized statewide when he received the Gary W. Davis Ethical Leadership Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association in 2025.
“For 60 years, the faculty, staff, and trustees of Sauk Valley Community College have been instrumental in improving the lives of countless people in the Sauk Valley,” Hellmich said in a news release. “I am proud of what we and community leaders have accomplished together over the past 10 years and what we will accomplish together over the next several months.
“After that time, however, it will be time for me to retire so Linda [my wife] and I can spend more time with our family, in particular our grandchildren. I thank Board Chair Bob Thompson for the opportunity to lead such a wonderful college and for his support and the support of all of the trustees.”
Hellmich also championed several new programs in nursing, sonography and emergency medical technician certification and oversaw the development of SVCC’s greenhouse in 2023, supporting the college’s expanding Agriculture curriculum in collaboration with the University of Illinois Extension.
Beyond SVCC, Hellmich was named Citizen of the Year by the Dixon Chamber of Commerce and Main Street and received the Chamber Champion Award from the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce in 2020.
His professional career spans over three decades, including teaching and leadership roles in community colleges across Florida, Minnesota and Kentucky. He is also the editor and contributing author of Ethical Leadership in Community Colleges: Bridging Theory and Daily Practice and has taught graduate courses on the subject, working to become a national voice in ethical leadership.
In honor of his service, SVCC has launched the Hellmich Leadership Legacy Campaign to benefit the Impact Program, ensuring continued support for students.
“His retirement is well-earned and
his legacy will continue through innovative initiatives like Sauk’s Impact Program, the Sauk Academy, career technical and academic degree development, Sauk’s Police Academy, and our expansive Dual Credit Program – all of which are a testament to Dr. Hellmich’s commitment to the Sauk Valley and his enduring impact on students, workforce placement, and the entire region we serve,” Thompson said. “We couldn’t be more impressed or more thankful for his time with our beloved college.”
The SVCC Board of Trustees soon will begin the search process to identify the next president of Sauk Valley Community College, said Lori Cortez, SVCC vice president of advancement.
“We are committed to finding a leader who will build upon the strong foundation Dr. Hellmich has established and who will continue to advance the college’s mission and vision,” Cortez said. Additional information about the search process will be shared with the community in the coming weeks.
For information on the Hellmich Leadership Legacy Campaign or to make a tax-deductible contribution, visit svcc. edu/hellmich-legacy or call Cortez at 815-835-6260.

The second bid for lockers and the third bid for the walkway between Fulton Elementary and Fulton Middle school. The base bid approved was in the amount of $3,058,000. After architect and engineer-

The Board at that time will hear from both sides of the issue. We Support Our Local Schools!
SVCC, NIU partner to stem teacher shortage
Great teachers make the Sauk Valley even greater. They inspire, motivate and shape our lives.
As many of us reflect on our childhoods, it’s no surprise that some of the most influential people we remember are our teachers. They guide us through challenges, build our confidence, and often see potential in us that we don’t yet see in ourselves. Our community is simply not at its best without great educators. Many of these inspiring individuals serve far beyond the classroom – as coaches, club advisers, scorekeepers, event volunteers and even as adjunct faculty at our college. They are a cornerstone of our community and vital to our future.
What should concern all of us is the teacher shortage we’re facing – both locally and across the nation. Developing the next generation of educators is a priority and a core part of Sauk Valley Community College’s mission, guided by lifelong learning and public service.
In support of this mission, we have worked diligently with our K-12 partners and Regional Office of Education No. 47 in Sterling to think creatively, broaden access and strengthen the educator pipeline. These efforts also have led us to partner with Northern Illinois University, which offers an innovative, state-funded program known as LEAP – the Licensed Educator Accelerator Pathway.
This tuition-free program, funded by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin through the congressional discretionary funding process as part of the federal budget, provides a valuable opportunity to support future teachers.
About two dozen paraprofessionals from school districts across northwest Illinois soon will enroll in Northern Illinois University’s LEAP program, which will be housed at SVCC beginning in August.
This initiative will help local schools grow their talent by investing in current employees. We are not only excited to partner with NIU on this important work, but we also are honored to support future teachers on their journey toward earning a degree, transforming lives and shaping the next generation.
One of the Sauk Valley’s greatest strengths has always been its ability to rally around community needs and work together. It is imperative that we rebuild the teaching pipeline with our homegrown talent.
Initiatives such as this one provide districts with meaningful support in their “grow-your-own” efforts, helping current staff upskill and supporting our graduates in completing their four-year degrees and teacher licensure.
In recent years, our region has seen as many as four dozen unfilled special education teacher positions in a single year, and the LEAP program will help close that gap. The LEAP program ensures not only that we have special education teachers, but that they also have high-quality preparation and are knowledgeable about our communities.
As our community continues its steadfast commitment to one another and growth through learning, filling our schools with strong and inspiring educators remains essential.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Our teachers embody that enthusiasm every day, and it’s contagious. Let’s continue to guide and mentor people of all ages to consider a career in teaching. Our community is counting on it.
If you’re interested in becoming a teacher, please contact SVCC or our many partners, such as the ROE or local school districts.
You could be the next educator who changes lives right here in the Sauk Valley.

Phishing texts come from everywhere; don’t reply
Text messages tell you of unpaid tolls from far-away states.
Text messages inform you of orders made to your Amazon or Paypal account.
Text messages alert you to unsuccessful attempts to deliver a parcel to you by UPS or the U.S. Postal Service.
More text messages threaten to suspend your driver’s license and registration because of unpaid traffic tickets.
Text messages from your bank notify they locked your account due to suspicious activity.
Even text messages coming out of the blue, from who knows who, asking “Are we still on for 8 a.m. golf?
What’s up with all these text messages? They are all phishing messages, pushed out to millions of cell phone subscribers, designed to motivate the recipients, through fear, excitement or curiosity, to respond. And we see a lot of them. The messages show recipients a phone number to call, or direct people to click on a link for more information. It’s a mistake to respond to these messages.
If you respond, criminals will tell their best lies to convince you to give
Randy Meier SENIORS VS. CRIME
up money, personal information, or both, to smooth over whatever problem they manufactured.
But what about those random messages asking about golf tee times, or asking about a lunch date, or those that feature just one-word messages –“Hello”? These may appear like “wrong number” or “accidental” messages. Many folks receiving them might just reply, telling the sender they received the message by mistake.
That reply is exactly what the sender wants. They want to engage you, so any kind of response is a win for them. Once the crooks get you to respond, they will apologize profusely for bothering you and commend you for alerting them. They will keep up the conversation with flattery and attention, seeking to turn you into a new friend. And once they make you into a new friend, they
might want to share some secrets – like allowing you to invest in a lucrative new stock offering or buy Bitcoin and make a fortune in two weeks.
The FBI made a public service announcement on July 3, reporting a 300% increase in 2025 in what they call “ramp-and-dump” stock fraud. A great deal of these schemes feature investors contacted through these accidental or wrong-number text messages.
Ramp-and-dump or pump-and-dump schemes pitch cheap penny stocks secretly controlled by criminals who inflate the stock price by pressuring investors into buying. After the stock price is artificially elevated, the criminals sell out at big profits, while the stock price collapses, leaving the unwary investors holding an empty bag.
Avoid these text message scams by using these measures:
Don’t click on any links in, or respond to, unexpected texts. Scammers want you to react quickly to get your personal information before you realize it’s a scam. Stop and talk to someone you trust.
Report and delete unwanted text
messages. Use your phone’s “report junk” option to report unwanted texts to your messaging app or forward them to 7726 (SPAM). Once you’ve checked it out and reported it, delete the text.
Look at filtering or blocking scammy text messages before they reach you:
• On your phone, options exist to filter and block spam. iPhones and Android phones use different methods, but both offer this service.
• Your wireless provider may offer a tool or service allowing you to block calls from unknown or private numbers. Check out ctia.org, an industry website, to learn what your provider offers.
• You can try call-blocking apps that block unwanted texts. Check out ctia. org to see what works with your phone model, user ratings and expert reviews.

6 questions for Sauk Valley area football
By DRAKE LANSMAN dlansman@shawmedia.com
The Illinois high school football season gets underway this week with the start of preseason practices on Monday. Here are six intriguing questions in the Sauk Valley area this fall in 2025.
Who steps up next for Dixon?
The Dukes are coming off back-toback 10-win seasons for the first time in program history. Dixon has gone 10-2 the past two seasons under Jared Shaner and reached the Class 4A state quarterfinals last fall behind a strong defense and high-octane offense.
But after the graduation of all-state quarterback Cullen Shaner, linebacker/ wide receiver Eli Davidson and additional experience at receiver, new players likely need to step up at key positions if the Dukes want to compete for double-digit wins once again.
Dixon’s offensive and defensive lines look to be a strength, however. The Dukes return four starters on the offensive line and five players with experience on the defensive line.
The running game also looks to be in a good position, led by 1,200-plus-yard rusher Landon Knigge. Jagger Kemp will take the reins at quarterback for the Dukes, and Jake Whelan returns after he was second on the team in tackles to Davidson last season.
Will Morrison transfer Rylan Alvarado lead the Newman backfield?
The Comets have a new speedster to look for in the backfield this season. Morrison transfer Rylan Alvarado comes to Newman after he led off Class 1A state track titles in the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays. Morrison’s dominance in the sprint events helped the Mustangs win their first state title as a team.
Alvarado, who also played tailback at Morrison, ran an 11.29 personal record in the 100 as a sophomore in track.
Alvarado looks to fit right in at the traditionally run-heavy Newman. There will be plenty of carries available for the Three Rivers Rock Conference champions following the graduation of Daniel Kelly, Cody McBride and Briar Ivey.
Senior quarterback Evan Bushman
and athlete/linebacker George Jungerman return to help lead the team as experienced multi-sport standouts.
Can Sterling revitalize its run game this season?
Finishing with five wins each of the last two seasons, the Golden Warriors have narrowly made the playoffs to extend a run of 10 straight appearances.
Establishing what has historically been a strong run game would very likely help make the playoff path easier for Sterling and coach Jonathan Schlemmer, who became the team’s alltime leader in wins last season with 101 and counting.
Sterling averaged just 69.2 rushing yards per game last season, and 2.4 yards per rush. Cobey Shipma led the backfield with 283 yards, with Wyatt Cassens (197 yards) and Deseo Ibarra-Castillo (117) the only other rushers over 100 yards for the season. Sterling had just nine rushing touchdowns on the season, led by Shipma’s four. Ibar -
ra-Castillo’s 44-yard run was the team’s longest of the season.
For a team with a new quarterback that relied on its defense last season, effectively running the ball would go a long way.
What will Rock Falls’ next coach bring?
Staying competitive in every game, let alone winning, has been a challenge for Rock Falls over the years. The Rockets went 5-43 in six years under coach Kevin Parker before his resignation after last season.
David Chavira is now the coach for the Rockets, who have not won more than two games since they went 3-6 in 2016 and 2017. Their last winning season was a 5-4 campaign in 2009, and their last playoff appearance came in 1992, when they went 7-4.
How will area teams fare in the NUIC?
It was an up-and-down season in the
Northwest Upstate Illini Conference last year for area teams. While Eastland-Pearl City (6-2 NUIC) had its best season since 2018 and took third in the conference, Forreston had a rare down year and finished 2-7 overall. Morrison was 2-6 in its first year in the NUIC, and Fulton was 3-5. In a loaded conference still run by Lena-Winslow with Durand-Pecatonica right behind, even battling for the middle of the conference standings and a trip to the playoffs is not a given.
Can the Sauk Valley dominate the I8FA finals again?
Last season, the Amboy co-op beat Milledgeville 42-14 to win its second straight 8-man title after a third straight appearance in the championship game. Both Sauk Valley area teams are expected to contend once again.
The Milledgeville Missiles also beat Polo 28-14 in the semifinals, and West Carroll’s 8-man debut closed in the Elite 8 with a 66-0 loss to Polo.
Brian Hurley
Newman quarterback Evan Bushman prepares to hand off. Newman defeated Chicago Hope 50-22 in Class 1A 1st round football at Sterling High School last season. Bushman returns to help lead the Comets this season.
