Old-time wheat threshing with side dishes of broom making, blacksmithing, basket weaving and other hands on historical skills were all on the menu at the Bos Bros Fall Harvest, an old-fashioned threshing bee.
Antique farm equipment in a rainbow of colors from original rust to shiny yellow and green filled the show grounds on the Bos Brothers Historical Farm, located on Springhill Road south of Erie.
The show – celebrating its 10th anniversary – is designed to showcase “fieldto-table” practices while giving antique farm machinery enthusiasts a chance to show off their machines and provide visitors a glimpse of how farmers harvested wheat before automated, air-conditioned combines with global positioning navigation arrived.
Walking behind a John Deere hand plow was one of those skills that Bennett Sierens, 15, of Annawan experienced Friday.
“At first it was hard to figure out,” said Bennett, who attended the show with his 85-year-old grandfather, Francis. “But then it became easier.”
Bennett grabbed the wooden handles of the steel plow, guiding it through the sod as it was pulled by an antique John Deere tractor, rather than a horse.
Francis smiled and nodded as Bennett steadied and straightened the plow
as it churned up the moist soil in neat, dark brown rows.
“My first tractor was a John Deere, GP, general purpose,” Francis said. “So I did not have to use a hand plow like that.”
Bennett and his family raise pigs and cattle on their grain farm in Annawan. Asked if he thought he’d be able to use the hand plow as part of his modern day chores, he smiled and said: “No, not how I am right now, but maybe if I worked out on it more.”
That transference of vintage farming skills to today’s generation is one of the goals of the show, said Katie Smith, the daughter of Chuck Bos, who with his brother Kevin started the harvest shows in 2016.
The family plans, schedules and organizes each show as a “labor of love.”
“It’s a lot of work, but we really love it,” Smith said as she buzzed between activities and demonstrations Friday.
“It is nice to see the people outside, seeing new things and seeing where their food comes from.”
The Bos farm family alternates its harvest show with its threshing show on odd and even years. Last year’s show concentrated on corn.
There is no admission fee. The show runs off donations and sponsorships.
To help cover the costs of the show, visitors deposit donations in milk cans located on the show’s grounds or stop by the registration barn.
This year’s show focused on harvest-
ing wheat and processing it into homemade wheat bread, cooked on the show grounds in the antique “Cook Shack,” a portable kitchen wagon used to bring meals to threshing teams in the fields.
Visitors also could watch demonstrations showcasing how agricultural-related skills were done before automation.
The Buckwalter brothers, Lincoln, Everett and Baylor from Geneseo, ages 9, 9 and 5, watched Carvel Morgan of Davenport, Iowa, make them a broom by hand, weaving different sizes, shapes and colors on his antique, not mechanized, machinery.
Everett said he planned to use the broom to clean up at home. Lincoln said he may use it to shoo the cat.
Meanwhile, in the adjacent wheat fields, two antique John Deere combines were busy harvesting and depositing their wheat berries into a wagon.
Modern harvesting involves the use of a combine harvester that reaps, threshes and winnows – separates the chaff from the grain – all in one machine.
In another field, wheat sheaves were loaded into a wagon and taken to one of the threshing machines where they were threshed (thrashed) to loosen the edible part of wheat from the straw.
Some of those wheat berries were then transported directly to Charles Pulley, another volunteer, who used a 1949 mill powered by a 1919 Fairbanks Morse engine to grind the berries into flour.
That flour was taken to the “Cook Shack” where Sabrina Smith, 14, of Clinton, Iowa, served up samples of freshly baked wheat bread for visitors to try.
“I think we’ve done about 28 loaves so far,” Sabrina said late Friday. “The bread is very popular, especially the cinnamon raisin.”
A working, portable sawmill powered by Charles Hubbard’s 1916 Case steam tractor – a 20,000-pound tractor once used by Hubbard’s grandfather –was one of the working demonstrations. Visitors watched as large tree trunks were placed onto the sawmill and a 5/16th-inch blade cut it into planks.
Groups of homeschooled children jumped onto a tractor-drawn wagon Friday and ventured out onto the fields to see all the action.
As one of the combines harvested the wheat, volunteer Roger Mixer of East Moline picked up a stalk of wheat and rubbed it between the palms of his hands to show how the wheat is gleaned and how it makes it to the dinner table.

Bos Brothers is how the Boses were known throughout the area. Clarence Bos had four boys – Robert, Bill, Charles and Peter. (Charles is Chuck and Kevin’s dad.) They all farmed together in the 1950s and 1960s in the Erie/Geneseo area.

Energy, enthusiasm and competitiveness fueled impressive
By DRAKE LANSMAN dlansman@shawmedia.com
Morrison senior Bella Duncan’s statistics on the softball diamond this past spring were eye-popping.
But that doesn’t tell the whole story of her impact on the team.
As impressive as her numbers in multiple categories were, her energy and enthusiasm from the leadoff spot, the circle and off the field also helped the Fillies to their best season since 2017.
Duncan is the 2025 Sauk Valley Media Softball Player of the Year.
“She’s got that spotlight on her,” Morrison coach Chelsea Eads said. “And that’s one of the best things about her is the way she plays and the way she competes.
“When she brings that energy, everyone is feeding off her.”
Duncan relished being the tone setter, whether she was pitching or leading off at the plate.
“As a pitcher, I’m in control of the game. I’m in control of every inning, every out,” Duncan said. “When the girls on the team see me pumped up, it kind of gets them going automatically. They’ll want to match my energy.
“I do every single thing at 100 mph. I have one speed and it’s fast and faster. ... When I was younger playing softball, I had to be told to calm down quite a few times.”
Her rapid-fire pace often left batters shaking their heads on their way back to the dugout. Morrison finished 22-5 this season, winning a regional title for the second time in three years and reaching the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017.
The Fillies had a 17-game winning streak and went 10-0 in their first season in the NUIC South.
Duncan went 16-3 with a 0.88 earnedrun average, five no-hitters, one perfect game and a whopping 308 strikeouts and only 17 walks in 127 innings. She allowed just 16 earned runs all season. Her 308 strikeouts were the fourth most in Illinois last season, according to MaxPreps.
She tied Monica Wright’s single-game school record with 30 strikeouts in a 13-inning, 6-4 win over Fulton.
Offensively, she hit an area-best .606 with 57 hits, 25 RBIs, 25 doubles, four tri-
ples, five home runs and 46 runs scored. She was the NUIC South Player of the Year and a first-team All-State pick in Class 2A by the Illinois Coaches Association.
Duncan’s competitiveness has fed into her success.
“I’ve always wanted to win,” she said. “I like to think everything is a competition. When me and my sisters are helping my mom bring groceries in, I always have to carry the most.”
Even her decision to pitch came from a friendly competition with teammate Kaylee Pruis.
“She was a pitcher when we were younger, and I really wanted to be better than her, so I decided I would start pitching, too,” Duncan said with a laugh. “And that’s how it all started.”
Duncan grew up watching a variety of
sports before being drawn to softball. Her dad, David, played basketball at St. Ambrose University. Her mom, Taylor, played volleyball in high school. Ava Duncan is a year younger and also pitched for Morrison. The younger sisters are Kinley, 13, and Kendall, 11.
“My mom and my dad were at every single high school game,” Bella Duncan said. “I always have someone to lean on, and that means the world to me.”
Duncan’s success helped get the team back on track, starting her sophomore year after some down seasons. Morrison was a softball powerhouse under Tammy Deter, winning 12 regional titles and five state trophies from 1994 to 2017. Morrison won the 2A state championship in 2011 and last took third in 2017.
Duncan was especially motivated after the team fell short of another
regional title her junior year.
“I played every single game like it was my last, and I think that’s what made a big difference for me,” she said. “My senior year my eyes were really open.
“I wasn’t playing for myself, I was playing for the team.”
Duncan’s enthusiasm helped foster a fun environment on a talented team, whether it was chanting in the dugout, painting each other’s faces for a postseason game or dyeing someone’s hair.
“That was by far the most fun I’ve ever had playing softball,” said Duncan, who will continue her softball career at Western Michigan University.
Eads said Duncan’s confidence grew from her sophomore year and she stepped up as a leader.
“Not only in the batter’s box, but on the mound, as well,” Eads said. “And a lot of props go to her pitching coach, Larry Rice.”
Rice was there for the start of Duncan’s pitching journey and made the calls when she pitched for Morrison.
“He’s been there since I threw my very first pitch, and I can guarantee he’ll be there to see me throw my last,” Duncan said. “He has made such a big difference. ... He’s like a second dad to me.”
Duncan has helped rejuvenate Morrison softball, inspiring future players.
“Those younger Fillies in Morrison look up to her,” Eads said. “She’s got the natural talent, but she also put in all the work for it. She earned it all.”
Eads said Duncan made her job easy, and the team also bought in. Eads also was a standout at Morrison and played for Deter. Having a player such as Duncan pushed her to be at her best in her second year as head coach.
“Sitting in a conference meeting after we were finished, and they’re saying, ‘I’m just glad I don’t have to see Bella Duncan again.’ She’s somebody that you want on your team because of how great she is, how much success she can bring and the fire that she has,” Eads said, “and the way she can get everybody lifted up around her.”
“I was just really trying to leave my mark,” Duncan said, “and make sure that these girls know what it takes to win, and they can carry on what I’ve showed them.”

The committee forming Fulton’s Sesquicentennial celebration chose the drawing of Miss Linda Eads as the official emblem of the celebration. The emblem shows the word “Sesquicentennial” in the shape of the Mark N. Morris
Memorial Bridge across the center of the drawing. In the foreground a paddlewheel steamer goes under the bridge. Work is progressing on the Seventh Avenue approaches to Fulton Elementary School and they will be ready for the start of the 1985-86 school year. Since opening several years ago, the area has been a hazard to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians because it is narrow. The street now has been widened 10 feet and there are curbs and gutters on the north side.

Have you ever wondered if you could survive polio? From an early age, Kenneth had a problem with his health but continued to enjoy his childhood. In his adult life, he was a family man and a hard worker. During his later life, he loved coloring and watching the Cardinals.
Kenneth Dewain Edie is very remarkable because of his humble beginnings, his determination to succeed and the legacy that he left behind.
Kenneth Dewain Edie was born on Aug. 28, 1931 in Mullen, Nebraska. His mother’s name is Elizebeth Ann Passige and his father’s name is Laurence Edie. Kenney, which is his nickname, had four siblings but only one is still here today. Lary, Raymond, Laurida and Carrol Edie are his siblings. Carroll is the only one alive today.
At age 2, Kenneth was diagnosed with polio, a pandemic that could cause paralysis and sometimes death. Luckily, he didn’t die from it, but he was crippled his whole life.
Kenney went to school in Marceline, Missouri, which is where he grew up. He went to school there for all 12 years but missed a lot of school because of his health complications. Kenneth was well-known in Marceline for being crippled.
Did you know that the time that he was growing up was the time of the Great Depression? This meant that he and his siblings worked a lot on the farm. Also as a child, Kenney loved to fish since he could hardly do any sports.
After awhile, Lary and Raymond
moved to Cordova, Illinois, with a group of people. A few years later, Kenney moved there with them when he was old enough. When Kenneth moved to Cordova, he was an adult.
In Cordova, he met a girl named Iyla May Craton, who was soon to be his wife. He got married at age 21 to Iyla in 1952. He only had one marriage and it lasted a lifetime. Iyla and Kenneth had four children – Rick, Bobbi, Penny and Michelle Edie. They are all still alive.
Kenney was a very hard worker. He has worked multiple jobs, including working at John Deere as a die castor for 35 years and working at the Cordova Fire Department. Another thing he did was be a community leader. Kenney was a community leader in Cordova for a very long time and did many things to support the community.
For example, he set up fundraisers and hosted events. Kenney has won many trophies along the way. Also, he and his friends set up a booster club in Cordova.
One fun fact about him is that he had breakfast with Barbara Mandrell and Larry Gatlin. He also shook the hand of Dennis Weaver, Steamboat Willie and The Statler Brothers.
You may not know who they are but they are well-known people to the older generations.
One of Kenney’s hobbies was playing rolle bolle, which is a game that was pretty popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Another thing he liked to do was play horseshoes with his family.
One of his favorite memories was when he was in the audience of the
show Hee Haw and you could see him for almost the whole show.
Kenney loved going to Wyoming. He traveled to every state except Alaska.
Kenneth moved only once and that was when he moved to Cordova. One of his biggest achievements was surviving polio. He also managed to make his family happy and that was important.
His lifelong friends included the Downeys, Piets and the Passigs.
Some of his hardships were that he lived through the Great Depression, struggled with being handicapped and during his later life, he had his leg amputated.
Kenney usually spent his free time with his family or in his garden.
His advice that he always said was to adapt and change because change isn’t always bad. Kenneth loved life and lived it to the fullest.
He fought to the very end because he never knew when his life would end. Another thing he said is that when you are sick always eat because it gets the sickness out of your system.
One fun fact about Kenney is that he shares a birthday with my baby brother. Another fun fact is he collected hats from everywhere he went.
His life was very eventful and great, but he sadly passed away. Kenneth died on Oct. 26, 2020, in Cordova, Illinois. He was surrounded by his loving family at his time of death.
Kenneth was a father, grandpa and great-grandpa who did a great job raising a family. People will not forget him.
In conclusion, Kenneth Dewain Edie was an astonishing great-grand -
father because of his eventful childhood, his dedication to life and the fact that he will be loved and missed by many.
During his childhood, he and his siblings worked for food and went fishing. In his adult life, he spent time with his family and enjoyed his favorite hobbies.
Overall, Kenneth used all the time he had to love his life and make others happy. I cherish the memories that we got to make together when he was alive and I wish that we could have made more.
As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life.
Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.
The project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Ms. Shabani and their families. It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher Mrs. Wiersema made a tradition in her eighth grade class.
Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you all will enjoy their stories, too.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that agricultural producers and private landowners can enroll in the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program through Aug. 8.
Grassland CRP, offered by USDA’s Farm Service Agency, is a voluntary working lands conservation program that enables participants to conserve grasslands while also continuing most grazing and haying practices, according to a news release from the Carroll County FSA.
Grassland CRP emphasizes support for grazing operations, plant and animal biodiversity and grasslands and land with shrubs and forbs under the greatest threat of conversion.
“Through the conservation of America’s essential grasslands, Grassland CRP supports continued agricultural productivity while at the same time prioritizing private lands stewardship,” FSA Administrator Bill Beam said. “By offering landowners the best of both worlds – economic viability and working lands preservation – Grassland CRP provisions support
USDA’s commitment to Farmers First.”
CRP, USDA’s flagship conservation program, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. For four decades, CRP has provided financial and technical support to agricultural producers and landowners whose accepted acres are placed under contract for 10 to 15 years and who agree to voluntarily convert the land to beneficial vegetative cover to improve water quality, prevent soil erosion and support wildlife habitat. TheAmerican Relief Act, 2025, extended provisions for CRP through Sept. 30.
More than 25.8 million acres are enrolled in CRP, with almost 9.7 million acres in Grassland CRP. On May 12, FSA opened General and Continuous CRP enrollment for 2025. FSA is reviewing submitted offers and will announce accepted offers at a later date. Because of a 27 million-acre statutory cap, only 1.8 million acres are available for all CRP enrollment this fiscal year.
Landowners and producers interested in Grassland CRP should contact their local USDA Service Center to learn more or apply for the program before the Aug. 8 deadline.
JO HELLER
Born: August 2, 1951 in Morrison, IL
Died: July 20, 2025 in Morrison, IL
Jo Heller, age 73, of Morrison, died unexpectedly on July 20, 2025. Following years of declining mobility, weakening strength, and deteriorating eyesight, she was regaining strength and mobility for over a year, and her last day was a great day until sudden pain hit. Her daughter lived with, cared for, and loved her.
Jo was born August 2, 1951, to Charles Birely, Jr., and Helen (Lawton) Birely. When her mother died, she lived with her sister and beloved grandmother, Katie Lawton. Following her grandmother’s death, she was raised by her future adoptive parents, Laurence Wells, Jr. and Catherine (Birely) Wells, Jr. along with her father.
Jo was educated in the Morrison school system, graduating Morrison High School in 1969. She married Danny Heller in 1973. Danny died in May 1996.
She completed most coursework in the early 1970s at Sauk Valley Community College. While raising a family and making a home, she studied in the evenings, earning an associate’s degree in accounting from SVCC in December 1990. She worked for RB&W and then Reliant Fastener in Rock Falls, retiring July 15, 2011.
She was a member of the Morrison United Methodist Church for over 50 years, although it has been years since she participated in activities. She collected decorative turkeys and enjoyed bowling, especially the senior league. She loved cats and dogs, caring for silly, sassy, and special pets throughout her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Heller, and several cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband, her sister (Becky Vegter), and her son (Mark Heller in May 2023).
A graveside service was accorded at Grove Hill Cemetery. Her daughter wished to deal with the personal loss in private. They had many years together talking, living life, and laughing. Memorial donations may be made to the Morrison Fire Department. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
