Fulton City Lodge No. 189 held its annual Past Masters Dinner on Sunday, June 12, at the Forest Inn in Morrison, with 41 in attendance.

The Most Worshipful Grand Master of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois, Michael E. Jackson, was the guest speaker. This was the first time since 2019 that the members of the Lodge have been able to have this dinner because of the pandemic.

There also were five wives of deceased members in attendance.

After a meal, the Worshipful Master of Fulton City Lodge, Lynn Stoecker, introduced the Grand Master and the Brothers receiving Service Pins.

Worshipful Brother Wayne Anglese received his 65-year pin, Worshipful Brother Lynn Stoecker received his 25-year pin, and Brother William Francis received his 25-year pin. Right Worshipful Brother Dale Thayer received his 50-year pin and acknowledgment from the Grand Master for his 31 years of work with the Grand Lodge of Illinois, 26 of those being with the Illinois Masonic Academic Photo provided Bowl.

The Fulton Fire Department will be celebrating the retirement of four firefighters on Saturday, July 2, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Manny’s Too, 305 11th Ave. Fulton.

David Frantz, president of the Fulton Kiwanis Club, awards his wife and Kiwanis secretary Barb Frantz a Legion of Honor Award for 25 years of Kiwanis service during Totally Tuesday at School Park on Tuesday, June 21. Barb recognized others in the chapter for their years of service, as well as the Clinton and Camanche Kiwanis for teaming up over the years. The mission of the Kiwanis is to “serve the children of the world,” said Barb, with the local chapter involved in service projects, collecting recyclables, running the Queen of Hearts raffle at King Pins, distributing meals, hosting events, cleaning up around Fulton and donating funds to local groups. She thanked the Kiwanis for working hard to meet the needs of the community, while encouraging others to consider joining. The club meets on the first and third Tuesday at noon at Gatherings, 408 10th Ave. in Fulton.

Effective Friday, July 1, Schmaling Memorial Public Library District will be reinstating fines on overdue materials because of rising operating costs for the library.

All fines assessed, except charges for replacement of lost or damaged materials, will go into the Building Maintenance fund to help with the upkeep and improvements to the library building and equipment.

Overdue items are assessed a 10 cents per day fine, with the exception of special items such as circulating devices and museum passes. There is a one-day grace period allowed on all overdue items.

Fines begin accumulating on the second day overdue.

Books, magazines and audiobooks may be returned in the outdoor book drop, but not DVDs. Should you need to renew your materials, you may do so by calling the library at 815-589-2045 or logging into your online account through the PrairieCat patron catalog (search.prairiecat.info).

Early American Crafters seek volunteer re-enactors The Early American Crafters, a volunteer nonprofit organization that re-enacts life in the 1800s at Heritage Canyon in Fulton, are looking for people interested in demonstrating a skill used in early American history.

The crafters are seeking musicians, singers, artists, weavers, spinners, caners, circuit preachers, woodworkers, tin smiths, toy makers and cobblers from the area willing to attend three annual events at the canyon: Dutch Days in May, the Fall Festival in October and the Christmas Walk in December.

There will be an orientation

meeting at Wierenga’s Heritage Canyon, 515 N. Fourth St. in Fulton, at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 17.

Crafters will discuss the roles and responsibilities and show potential volunteers around the canyon.

The crafters also are looking for tour guides, gate volunteers, people to stroll in costumes and people to help behind the scenes from hauling wood to the wood boxes, cleaning and decorating before and after events, spring and fall cleaning and helping in the gardens.

Whiteside awards $2 million in COVID-19 relief funds to 59 entities

The Whiteside County Board will distribute slightly more than $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to 59 of the 117 entities that applied for assistance because there were adversely affected by the COVID19 pandemic.

Nineteen of the 59 were allotted the maximum grant, $53,350. All that qualified, which included businesses, nonprofits, landlords and even one individual, were granted some or all of their request.

The money was sought for all kinds of reasons, from renovating the grandstands at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds to business expansions and making up for lost revenue to funding a program to help children traumatized by the pandemic.

The entities must pay for their expenses up front, then submit proof of their expenditures to the board to be reimbursed. Costs must be incurred and obligated by Dec. 31, 2024, and all work must be paid for and completed

by Dec. 31, 2026, according to the federal guidelines.

The county hired the accounting firm Wipfli to weed through the applications and determine eligibility, and the county finance committee set the grant amounts, which were approved by the board at its meeting June 21.

To be eligible, each entity had to meet U.S. Treasury and county guidelines, including that it must be located in Whiteside County or directly benefit county residents; have fewer than 500 employees; be in good standing and not in default with the IRS, state or county; and not be in bankruptcy.

Whiteside County received $10.7 million in COVID-19 relief money from the American Rescue Plan Act. In addition to the $2 million grant program, it will spend $3 million to help bring broadband to underserved rural areas, and will use the remaining $5 million for yet-to-be-determined county projects such as building upgrades and infrastructure work.

DARLENE SIKKEMA Darlene Sikkema, age 89 of Fulton, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at her home.

In following Darlene’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, June 11th at Rastrelli’s Restaurant on Main Avenue in Clinton, Iowa. Burial will take place at a later date in Fulton Township Cemetery. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Darlene Sikkema, 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Fulton, Illinois, with family near, including her husband of 71 years, Russell. Darlene was the daughter of Andrew and Mae Bielema, along with her siblings Howard and Viola. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in the Albany-Erie area, and went to Erie High School, where she loved participating in marching band and excelled in Latin class.

She married Russell Sikkema in 1951. A devoted farm wife, she tended chickens, chased pigs, grew and canned vegetables and fruit, planted trees and shrubs at every house she lived in, and was well-known for her superb cooking for her family and many others who helped with the farm work. Darlene was a wonderful and supportive mother to her three sons Loren, Jon, and Scott, and was an active and vocal attendee at Fulton Steamer football games. She loved her daughter-inlaw Cecelia, and spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren. In later years, she enjoyed traveling, volunteering at Fulton Elementary School,reading biographies of historical women, an occasional glass of wine, and getting her hair done each week at Head Over Heels Salon, where she and Russell enjoyed good times and laughter with friends.

Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, with Mr. Ken Renkes officiating. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 28th at the funeral home. During the visitation, at 6:00 p.m., there will be a Fire Department walk-through. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. A memorial to Morrison Athletic Boosters has been established.

Pood was born August 22, 1935, in Sterling, IL, to Howard and Ivy (Twombly) King. He was a graduate of Morrison High School and

Rockford Business College. On November 26, 1965 he married Coralyn Null in Morrison.

Pood had worked at General Electric in Morrison for 37 years. He also worked as a bailiff for the Morrison County Court House for 28 years, and for over 25 years he operated his own lawn mowing business. For 28 years Pood was a volunteer fireman for the Morrison Fire Department. He was also a member of the Morrison Masonic Dunlap Lodge #321 A.F. & A.M. Survivors include his wife, Coralyn; three sons, Toby (Barb) King of Morrison, Kevin (Melissa) King of Mt. Juliet, TN and Jeff (Denise) King of Peru, IL; seven grandchildren, Kendra King, Andy (Kayla) Ellerbrock, Chelsea King, Elyssia (Adam) Sharrow and Dalton (Tiffany) Sego, McKenna (fiancé Joey Brackemyer) King and Erika King; one great grandson, Bryce Brooker; a brother-in-law, Jody (Nancy) Null. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Notice for Public Hearing Village of Erie, Illinois Business District Plan for the Proposed Erie Business District The Village of Erie is considering adopting a Business District Plan for the proposed Erie Business District (pursuant to the Business District Development and Redevelopment Law constituting Section 65 ILCS 5/11-74.3-1, et seq., as amended).

This notice also includes the following information: 1. A public hearing will be held at 5:15 p.m. on July 12, 2022, at the Erie Village Hall, 740 Main Street, Erie, IL 61250.

2. In order to implement the activities covered by the Erie Business District, the Business District Plan must be adopted.

3. The geographical boundaries of the Erie Business District are as follows: 4. The Area encompasses 252 parcels of property and rights-of-way in the Village of Erie. Generally, this Area encompasses parcels in the central portions of the Village, as well as the northern, eastern, and western boundary areas. Beginning at the northeast portion of the corporate boundary, the Area takes in properties adjacent to Lake Erie and continues south to take in properties in the downtown area. North of 16th Avenue the Area extends northeast to take in property on the west side of Moline Road. North of the downtown the boundary takes in properties in the north of Highland Avenue and west to the corporate boundary, and continues south to Moline Road. Southeast of Main Street the Area takes in properties in the southeast portion of the Village.

5. The Erie Business District Plan provides for public investment and private investment in public infrastructure and other statutory eligible activities.

A copy of the Business District Plan, which includes a boundary map of the Business District, is available for public inspection at the Village Clerk’s office located at 740 Main Street, Erie, IL 61250.

6. Within the District a rate of tax of 1.0% shall be imposed as a retailer’s occupation tax and service occupation tax pursuant to Subsection (10) and (11) of Section 11-74.3-3 of the Act. Such tax shall be imposed for up to, but no more than, 23 years.

7. Any person is invited to submit alternate proposals or bids for any proposed conveyance, lease, mortgage, or other disposition by the municipality of land or rights in land owned by the municipality and located within the proposed business district.

8. All interested persons will be given an opportunity to be heard at the public hearing.

1962: School district voters turn down tax increase for third time 60 Years

June 27, 1962

In what was probably the heaviest voter turnout in the history of the district, voters of School District 111 turned down a request for an increase in the district’s legal tax rate limit from 75 cents to 95 cents on $100 of assessed valuation. It was the third election on the same question within a period of 14 months.

Airman 1-c George Crandall, a former student at Fulton Community High School who entered the service in January 1957, has been given special recognition at Langley AFB in Virginia for his contribution to the overall safety program of the 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. This resulted in the unit being awarded the Republic of Colombia Trophy. He was honored with the flying safety achievement trophy along with other members of the unit. It was the first time a United States Air Force unit at Langley Field received the Colombia award since 1939.

June 28, 1972

An official proclamation has been issued by Gov. Richard Ogilvie announcing that bells and carillons will ring throughout Illinois at 1 p.m.

July 4 in commemoration of our

nation’s Declaration of Independence.

The Clinton Area Drug Council announced the winners of a recent contest for finding constructive ideas in solving drug abuse in the Clinton area.

Three Fulton students were among the winners: Randy Tiesman, a student at Community Christian School, received $7; George Edrington and Terri Temple, Fulton High School students, each received $10 for their winning entries.

40 Years

June 30, 1982

On July 1, 1982, the new owners of Smitty’s Welding Service, Clifton (Bud) and Gene Smith, will be doing “business as usual” at 14960 Elk Road, Fulton. Bud and Gene, sons of former owners Clifford and Ella Smith are well-qualified to serve the many faithful customers with the service they so richly deserve. Gene will be secretary and order clerk. Bud will be shop foreman in charge of repairs, and Smitty will work with the new owners for the next several months.

Unless major design changes are made in the riverfront area of the flood protection dike, it seems unlikely that a full use park will become a reality for the southern part of Fulton. A decision to cancel any additional effort to equip the park at this time was made at a

meeting of the city of Fulton, Fulton Flood Protection District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Dike Beautification Commission. The decision to delay park plans will not hamper the other beautification areas on the dike.

30 Years

June 24, 1992

A multi-vehicle accident on the Gateway Bridge caused major traffic jams on both sides of the river with more than an hour delay for frustrated motorists and numerous headaches for police on the Clinton side. During this time a severe thunderstorm with peasize hail and wind also added to the confusion.

Dr. William Wilkin, D.D.S. announced he will move his dental practice to a new location. He purchased the building that is known as Bluff Medical Center, located on Route 84 at the east edge of Fulton, and has remodeled it for his practice. The building will be known as the Fulton Professional Building and is large enough to contain the Wilkin practice and another professionals.

June 26, 2002

Representatives of volunteer organizations and officials from the city of Fulton were in Springfield to receive

the 2002 Governor’s Home Town Award. The award was given to recognize all the volunteer efforts with Fulton’s de Immigrant Windmill. This is the second year in a row that Fulton has received the Home Town Award.

At a meeting of the Fulton City Council, an offer was made by the family of the late Harold Wierenga to give Heritage Canyon to the city of Fulton to operate as a tourist attraction. The city did not accept the gift at that time and tabled the offer until a study could be made of the proposed gift.

June 27, 2012

Emily Gardner of Albany, a senior at Prince of Peace High School, is the recipient of a Jo-Carroll Energy Scholarship awarded to a Whiteside County student. Candidates were judged on grade-point average, college entrance exam scores, work and volunteer experience, school and community activities and a short essay demonstrating their knowledge of energy cooperatives.

Illowa Thrift Store donated $500 to the Early American Crafters who help take care of Heritage Canyon. In costume and character, the crafters bring the canyon to life for Dutch Days, Fall Festival, Beggars Night for Halloween and Christmas Walk.

A new preventive migraine treatment known as Aimoving is discussed

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Millions of people suffer from migraines and therefore miss work, family events and other important life connections because they are on the sidelines with their migraines.

As a preventive, a once-a-month

self-injection medicine has been developed. This medicine, known as Aimoving, has shown that many people are able to reduce about half the amount of days they suffer from migraines. In addition, it has been able to substantially reduce the rescue therapy for many.

Aimoving has a unique medicine of action compared with prior treatments. Specifically, it works on the Calcitonin gene related to Peptide receptors, known as CGRP. Aimoving blocks the receptor so that the CGRP cannot attach.

While the medicine is likely expen-

sive for those who do not have coverage, there may be some assistance available through the company.

The side effects are uncommon and include an occasional irritation at the injection site and occasional constipation. There is no major nausea or vomiting.

ERIE MIDDLE SCHOOL

As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else that they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.

This project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Mrs. Wolf, and the students’ families. It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher Mrs. Wiersema made a tradition in her eighth grade class.

Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families, and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you will enjoy their stories, too!

Nancy June (Perrault) Christian

There’s nothing better than my great-grandma’s Kringles at all the family gatherings! Kringles are Norwegian cookies shaped like pretzels. She is a very loving and caring person. She is also a wonderful great-grandmother.

I’m so glad I have her in my life. Nancy Christian is an amazing person who has lived through a lot because of her childhood, adult life and her life now.

Nancy Christian is an amazing great-grandma because of her childhood and what her life was like growing up. She was born on June 1, 1931, in Racine, Wisconsin. Her parents were Helen and Ed Perrault. She was the oldest of her two siblings. Her sister, Jackie, was the second oldest. She spent most of her time with Jackie. Her youngest sister was Kathy. While growing up she lived in Racine, Wisconsin. Nancy lived in a neighborhood where she spent most of her time playing with the neighborhood kids. They would have ball games and play red rover. Sometimes when kids would come over to ask to play, instead of asking her and her siblings, they would ask if their dad would come because he was good at gymnastics and he would help everyone with tricks. For vacations, they would go up to Duluth to visit her grandma. This was about the only vacations she would go on, but they went multiple times. One time, she and her sister Jackie at ages eight and nine were sent on a train, by them-

selves, to go to Duluth to visit their grandma.

Nancy Christian went to a fourroom, two-story grade school. She had to walk to school and always had to bring a cold lunch because there were no hot lunches. Her high school had 500 students. By high school, her family had a car and they would have their dad drop them off before they got too close to school so that no one would see their old car. Nancy played the saxophone from junior high through high school. After high school, she went to Carthage College, where she went for two years before she got married. One cool thing that she did at Carthage was that she played field hockey and was a cheerleader. As you can see her childhood was a big part of her life and full of unique experiences.

Nancy’s adult life also has had a great impact on her being who she is today. Nancy married Wesley Christian on January 27, 1951, at age 19. This was her only marriage and they were married until Wesley sadly passed away on July 6, 2005. They had four kids, the oldest Sandy, then Connie, Dave and the youngest, Jean. Sandy lives in Indiana, however, the rest of the kids have all stayed in Yorkville. A little fun fact about Connie’s name, who is also my grandma, is that she got her name from Connie Tegmeier who was one of Nancy’s friends from college; she was the one who introduced Nancy to Wesley. Some of Nancy’s many friends are Don and Steph Davidson, Clarence and Mary Jane Toftoy

and Howard and Corrine Mathre. Some jobs she has had in the past were working at a retail store, at a grain elevator, and she also worked at the county office in payroll. Her most important job was, of course, the one of taking care of her kids. One of her Christmas traditions was that her husband would read the Christmas story from Luke every year. She also has gone on many vacations, but one special one was when she went to Europe and there she looked at farms. It was in Europe where she found the saying that is on the outside of the barn where my family and I have all of our family gatherings. It reads, “En far og hans sønn med hjelpen av Gud skal bli gode bønder,” which in English means, “A father and his son with the help of God will become good farmers.”

She has gone to Hawaii nine times.

Some of her favorite memories are family weddings or just whenever she gets to be with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. My great-grandma also loves to bake. One of her specialties is Kringles. They are Norwegian cookies shaped like pretzels and they are delicious. She makes them for every family gathering we have. Some of her favorite foods are cherry pie and salty nuts. She loves to shop and sew as well. Nancy likes to listen to piano and organ music and she likes to travel. She loves to be out in the sun and be with people, as well as go to church. She also loves being with her family and likes to be together as much as possible. Overall, her adult

life affects her as a person and it has really been such a full and blessed life.

Nancy Christian continues to live a good life in present times. She is living on a farm in Yorkville, and has done so for 60 years. She lives on her own in a house that is right next door to her son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Shira, and Jim and Connie – my grandparents – live next door. She is currently 90 years old. She can still drive, follows all the politics and likes watching basketball. She also loves being with family.

She has 20 great-grandchildren and eight grandchildren. She also has rec ently re cov ered from getti ng COVID-19 in 2021, which put her in the hospital for a while but now that she is over that she is as good and healthy as ever. She is a Christian and has a strong faith in Jesus. She goes to Helmar Lutheran Church every Sunday.

She goes out to lunch with her friends often, which is something she really enjoys doing. Nancy has also, for the past couple of years, been going down to Fort Myers, Florida, in the winters.

There she spends about three months in a condo, where she can be in the warm temperatures and the sun. I have had the privilege to go down there a couple of times to visit her in Florida during spring break and I have really enjoyed it. One of my favorite memories with her is the time where she taught me and my cousins how to make Kringles; this was really fun and since then I have actually made them a couple of times with my dad. As you can see, Nancy Christian is still living an amazing life today.

During this project I learned many things. I learned that my great-grandma is an amazing person who is loving, caring and has many stories to tell about her past. I know that she is a person who loves her family and has a really strong faith in Jesus. I feel like I’m closer to her now that I have seen what her life was like and the different things she has experienced. She is very fun to talk to and one of her quotes she lives by is “Love people. Love God.” I think this project was a really good experience and I’d like to learn even more about my great-grandmother. I’m also looking forward to adding to the memories I have already made with her.

Nancy Christian is an amazing person because of her childhood and how it influences her life, her adult life and how it shaped her as a person, and how she still lives today. I have learned so much about her in this project and I’m glad that I got to get a feel for what her life was like. My great-grandma has already lived an amazing life and continues to live each day to the fullest.

Cordova Fire Department awarded grain rescue equipment Grain bin accidents send shockwaves through rural communities as farmers and grain handlers know all too well how quickly entering a grain bin can turn deadly.

To help prevent these accidents that result in dozens of lives lost each year, Nationwide is providing lifesaving resources to rural America’s first responders.

In partnership with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS), Nationwide is awarding fire departments across the country with grain rescue tubes and hands-on training to prepare them to respond when local grain entrapments occur.

After receiving more than 1,800 nominations across 45 states in the annual Nominate Your Fire Department Contest, a key piece of Nationwide’s Grain Bin Safety advocacy campaign, the insurer and its partners are proud to award grain rescue tubes and training to 58 fire departments. The Cordova Fire Protection District is among the organizations that will receive these resources in 2022.

“We are proud to provide first

responders the education and resources to lead the fight against local grain bin entrapments,” said Brad Liggett, president of Agribusiness at Nationwide. “It’s been our mission to bring an end to this industry issue by raising awareness of the dangers and suppling needed equipment to the front line rescuers tasked with responding when accidents occur.”

NECAS, based out of Peosta, Iowa, will deliver the rescue tubes and training to the winning fire departments throughout 2022, traveling to each location with state-of-the-art grain entrapment simulators and rescue tubes. The comprehensive training sessions include classroom education and rescue simulations using the entrapment tools, which are loaded onto 20-foot trailers and able to hold about 100 bushels of grain each.

With 2022 donations included, Nationwide and partners have supplied these resources to 265 departments across 31 states. At least five fire departments have used their rescue tubes and training to successfully rescue entrapped workers.
