“Agriculture education is big.”
That was not the theme but it was the message for the fourth Cultivating Connections in Agriculture, an event celebrating agriculture education and FFA in the Sauk Valley and the larger northern Illinois region.
The conference and networking event, held at Tettens Grain in Nachusa, brought together FFA members, educators, school administrators and members of the local business community to learn about agriculture education, FFA and how programs can be supported.
“A lot of learning happens outside of the classroom and that is what we are excited to showcase today. Our goal for you is to learn who your ag ed family tree is. Who can I reach out to? How can I support my program more?” Katie Pratt, Lee County agricultural literacy coordinator and manager of the Lee County Ag in the Classroom program said as she welcomed over 100 guests, including students clad in the familiar blue corduroy jackets of the FFA.
The event was directed at educators at the local level, including teachers, counselors, principals and superintendents.
One of those attending the event for the first time was Kelly Mandrell, superintendent of Polo Schools.
“We have an incredible ag department in Polo, with Stephanie Schultz and Alec Wetzell. They work well together and I want to find out, with the hard work they put in, is there anything we’re missing? What can the district or the alumni do to help support them and continue to grow our program?” Mandrell said.
Fifteen FFA chapters from across northern Illinois had displays showcasing their chapter and agriculture education program’s highlights and specialty areas.
“We asked them to showcase something about their chapter so we have chapters showcasing community service, their career development events, leadership development and their school’s agriculture curriculum. The showcase gives our attendees a very well-rounded look at what agriculture education looks like in schools,” Pratt said.
The chapter showcase was one part of the event that Mandrell, a graduate of Franklin Center High School and a for-

mer member of the Franklin Center FFA, said she was excited to see.
“I feel it’s important we see the whole picture, seeing what other kids and other FFA chapters are doing. It gives us another piece of the puzzle when we are looking at finances and state funding,” Mandrell said.
One of the messages of the event, conducted during National FFA Week, a national weeklong observance to recognize FFA and the benefits of FFA programs and agriculture education, is that agriculture education and FFA is larger than the traditional “farm kid” and “cows, sows and plows” images and mindset.
“We feel like there still is the stereotype that ag is still just for the kids who aren’t pursuing a four-year degree, that it’s still just for the kids where you just need to find a place to put them, the students who need to be in school and ‘we know in the ag shop they are going to keep their hands busy and they’re going to work.’ We still fight that stereotype,” Pratt said.
The FFA members who talked with teachers, principals, superintendents and others about their chapters are helping to break those stereotypes.
“The chapters and FFA members who are here today really showcase the diversity of what agriculture education is. We have chapters today that really focus on horticulture, we have chapters who are big into animal science and plant science, and we do have what people think of as ‘traditional’ ag education, the mechanics, the industrial arts-type activities,” Pratt said.
Mandrell echoed the need to change the way that agriculture education and FFA is viewed in the public sphere and in the education community.
“This is not just who’s going to college and who’s not. We need to stop that stereotype. It is all about the different activities, the different areas and specialties,” Mandrell said.
Mandrell said one common theme she was happy to see among the chapters represented at the event was a focus on community service.
“Every chapter I visited today talked about community service. Teaching our kids at a young age about being part of their communities and contributing to their communities is so important because when they start that young, chances are they are going to keep doing that for the rest of their lives,” she said.
The event also was designed to educate educators by offering six different break-out sessions. Speakers included ag teachers and FFA advisers, agriculture industry professionals and others connected to agriculture education and FFA, on topics ranging from how agriculture and FFA can build industry partnerships to getting students to participate in agriculture classes and FFA to engaging, attracting and managing FFA alumni groups.
The 15 chapters attending included Ashton-Franklin Center, Amboy, Bureau Valley, Dixon, Eastland, Forreston, Fulton, Geneseo, Kewanee, Morrison, Oregon, Polo, Rochelle, Sterling and Stillman Valley.

The Scotts Miracle-Gro office in Morrison is sporting a fresh new look thanks to a unique collaboration with the Digital Media Arts students at the Whiteside Area Career Center.
Following a competitive design process, Rock Falls student Emma Rumley has been named the winner of the Scotts Miracle-Gro Office Signage Competition.
The project challenged students to step outside the classroom and into the role of professional designers. Tasked with creating a centerpiece for the company’s recent office remodel, seven talented students submitted original con -
cepts that balanced brand history with modern aesthetic appeal.
To prepare for the competition, students conducted deep-dive research into Scotts Miracle-Gro’s corporate history and its long-standing relationship with the Morrison community. This research informed their designs, which utilized advanced digital techniques, including laser etching and complex color theory.
“The project was a great opportunity for students to further their knowledge of laser etching and color theory,” Digital Media Arts instructor Denis Mennie said. “They were also able to put into practice composition techniques and communication skills while working for a client. Students also got the opportunity to research Scotts Miracle-Gro and
discover how the company is involved in the community.”
While Rumley’s design was ultimately selected for the final installation, the competition showcased a high caliber of work from across the region.
Participating student designers also included:
• Damien Plocinski, Prophetstown
• Koa Herndon, Polo
• Minnie Markley, Eastland
• Annabelle Blevins, Morrison
• Isabella Bush, Fulton
• Kate Viall, Ashton-Franklin Center
For Scotts Miracle-Gro, the decision to bypass traditional commercial sign vendors in favor of local students was a deliberate choice to invest in the next generation of creative professionals.
“Partnering with the Whiteside Area Career Center for our new office signage was the perfect way to blend my role as office manager with our company’s growth and community involvement,” Scotts Miracle-Gro office manager Jeni Kessler said. “Instead of just ordering a sign, I wanted to give the students a realworld challenge, asking them to dive into our company history and create a design that actually meant something. It was great to see their level of interest and hear the stories behind their inspiration.”
Kessler added that the collaboration turned a standard office upgrade into a “meaningful project that highlights both our new space and the incredible local talent here at WACC.”
The Carroll County U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency announced that Kara Durward of Thomson was elected to represent her local administrative area 1 (LAA-1) during the recent county committee election.
“County Committee members are a critical component of the day-to-day operations of FSA,” County Executive Director Julie Skiles said. “They help deliver programs at the county level and work to serve the needs of local producers.”
All recently elected county committee members took office March 2.
Every FSA office is served by a county committee made up of local farmers, ranchers and foresters who are elected by local producers.
Other members currently serving on the FSA county committee include Kurt Krum and Douglas Olson.
County committee members impact the administration of FSA within a com-
munity by applying their knowledge and judgment to help FSA make important decisions on its commodity support programs, conservation programs, indemnity and disaster programs, emergency programs and eligibility.
County committee members provide a service to local producers through their decision-making and help shape the culture of a local FSA office.
They also ensure the fair and equitable administration of FSA farm programs in their counties and are accountable to the secretary of agriculture.
Members conduct hearings and reviews as requested by the state committee, ensure underserved farmers, ranchers and foresters are fairly represented, make recommendations to the state committee on existing programs, monitor changes in farm programs and inform farmers of the purpose and provisions of FSA programs.
They also assist with outreach and inform underserved producers,
such as beginning farmers, ranchers and foresters, about FSA opportunities. For information, visit the FSA web-
site at fsa.usda.gov/elections or contact the Carroll County FSA office at 815-2448732.

The touch-a-truck event of Rock Falls, known as “The Big One,” is now recognized as the largest such event in the United States, event chairman John Watts announced.
Following a record-breaking 2025 season that showcased over 170 unique vehicles, the event has solidified its status as the premier national destination for interactive machinery and community education, he said.
“What started as a local initiative has exploded into a national landmark,” Watts said. “When we say ‘The Big One,’ we aren’t just talking about the size of the tires. We are talking about a massive, coordinated effort to provide children with a scale of interaction they simply cannot find anywhere else in the country.”
The recognition of Touch A Truck of Rock Falls as the largest in the nation is a title that has been officially claimed and promoted by the event’s organizers and local officials, following the record-breaking season in 2025.
As of January, the largest Touch-aTruck event designation was formalized

tri-state area and beyond, making it a regional powerhouse for tourism and industry representation.
• Mission-driven scale: Unlike traditional truck shows, Rock Falls focuses on a four-pillar mission: Look, Touch, Learn, and Inspire. Every vehicle is paired with experts to teach children about the career paths and engineering behind the machines.
To accommodate the growing scale and provide a fresh experience for the community, Watts also announced that the 2026 event will move to a new downtown Rock Falls location on Saturday, May 30.
“While we are moving away from the concert-style after-party of 2025 to focus 100% on the core Touch A Truck experience, we are adding more interactive zones and live demonstrations than ever before,” Watts said.
This year’ s event will continue its commitment to accessibility by offering a “Quiet Hour” for sensory-sensitive visitors and will remain free to the public.
“We invite the entire country to come to Rock Falls this May,” Watts said. “If it has wheels, tracks, or rotors, you’ll find it here.”
through announcements by the event’s leadership.
While many municipal events host between 20 and 40 vehicles, Rock Falls has redefined the industry standard. The event earned its “Largest in the Country” designation based on several key factors:
• Unrivaled vehicle count: With over 170 diverse vehicles appearing in recent displays, the event spans everything from heavy agricultural machinery and modern construction rigs to emergency response units, race cars and vintage transport.
• National reach: The event draws exhibitors and families from a massive

“We are shifting our footprint to the heart of the city to better integrate our local businesses and provide more space for even larger machinery,” Watts explained.
T ouch A Truck of Rock Falls is a community-driven event dedicated to providing free, engaging, and educational experiences.
Through its annual “The Big One” event, it aims to inspire the next generation of drivers, engineers, and first responders.

As summer plans begin to take shape, Timber Lake Playhouse is inviting audiences to be part of a milestone year in 2026 – its 65th anniversary season at the Theatre in the Woods.
For 65 years, Timber Lake Playhouse has welcomed generations of theater-goers to its wooded hillside outside Mount Carroll, where stories unfold beneath open skies and applause echoes through the trees. The 2026 season celebrates that legacy with a vibrant mix of beloved musicals, dynamic storytelling, and continued investment in new work.
The 65th anniversary Mainstage Season opens with Godspell from May 29 to June 7, followed by the sweeping epic Les Misérables from June 12 to 28.
July features the electrifying Cabaret from July 3 to 12 and the family favorite Shrek The Musical from July 17 to Aug. 2.

In August, audiences can experience the high-stakes musical Hands On A Hardbody from Aug. 7 to 16, followed by the premiere of The Mermaids from Aug. 21 to 30, the newest installment in the ongoing Andy Bro New Works Commission series.
“My third season as artistic director feels like the moment where vision and tradition fully intersect,” said Artistic Director Tommy Ranieri. “As we celebrate 65 years in the woods, this lineup embraces the scale of epic storytelling, the intimacy of character-driven work, and the excitement of a brand new piece handmade just for you. It is the most
personal season we have programmed in my time, because it reflects both the theater I inherited and the theater we are building together.”
Founded in 1961, Timber Lake Playhouse has grown into a professional producing organization known for Broadway-caliber performances presented in a uniquely natural setting. What continues to define the experience, however, is the gathering itself – neighbors, families, and visitors sitting together under the trees to share laughter, music, and storytelling in real time.
Before launching into its 65th anniversary Mainstage Season, Timber Lake Playhouse will host three special spring events designed to bring audiences together and build anticipation for the summer ahead: “Peace In The Valley: A Tribute to the Gospel Recordings of Johnny Cash & Elvis Presley” starring Jonny Lyons on April 18, “Felix and Fingers: Dueling Pianos” on April 25 and
“Jason Hudy: Mesmerizing Magic” on May 16.
Following the anniversary season, Timber Lake Playhouse will present a special fall production, Constellations by Nick Payne from Sept. 4 to 13. This intimate, contemporary drama will be offered as a stand-alone event, extending the theater’s programming beyond the traditional summer calendar.
Season subscriptions and individual tickets for the 65th anniversary Mainstage Season are currently available. Patrons are encouraged to plan early for what promises to be a celebratory summer of music, storytelling, and shared experiences in the Theatre in the Woods. Season subscriptions are on sale now for $180 for adults, a savings of more than 30% compared to purchasing individual tickets.
To reserve seats, call the TLP box office at 815-244-2035 or visit www.timberlakeplayhouse.org.

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges has received a $79,800 federal Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training grant to support recruitment and enrollment in its commercial driver’s license training program, with a focus on veterans, active-duty service members and military families.
The grant will fund tuition for at least 14 students, at $5,700 each, and expand access to short-term, high-quality commercial driver’s training that emphasizes safety and workforce readiness.
“This grant allows us to better serve those who have served our country by helping them transition into high-demand civilian careers,” said Karri Frank, dean of continuing education at Eastern Iowa Community Colleges. “Our five-week truck driving program is designed to move students quickly from training to employment, while maintaining the high safety standards the industry depends on.”
EICC’s five-week truck driving program is offered at the Muscatine campus

and the Blong Technology Center, combining classroom instruction with extensive hands-on, behind-the-wheel training. Students are taught by an instructor with extensive industry experience, ensuring training is grounded in realworld expectations and current safety practices.
The CMVOST grant program is designed to reduce crashes involving commercial motor vehicles by increasing the number of CDL holders who receive enhanced safety training. A congressional priority of the program is to assist current and former members of the U.S. armed forces, including National Guard members, Reservists, and their spouses, in earning a CDL and entering the transportation workforce.
Graduates of EICC’s truck driving program are prepared to meet federal licensing requirements and pursue immediate employment in the commercial transportation industry, supporting employers throughout Eastern Iowa and the region.
More information about EICC’s truck driving program, including upcoming class options and enrollment details, is available at eicc.edu/truckdriving.

1961: Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors becomes the first NBA player to score 3,000 points in a season. Chamberlain scores 32 points in a 120-103 loss to Detroit to bring his season total to 3,016.
By DRAKE LANSMAN dlansman@shawmedia.com
Looking to hold on for a third win this season against Pecatonica, it was fittingly a defensive play that helped seal a 48-41 Eastland victory in Friday night’s Class 1A Orion Sectional final.
With his team up five with 30 seconds left, Eastland junior Wyatt Carroll picked off a Pecatonica pass and sprinted down for an uncontested layup.
“Coach Craig [Heckman] said I should be stealing that pass the whole game,” Carroll said. “I finally took his advice, and I got it, and I guess it was just wraps from there.”
It was the second straight year the Cougars beat the Indians to advance to the Elite Eight. Eastland will face Trem ont (25-10) at 7 p.m. in Monday’s Macomb Supersectional at Western Illi nois University’s Western Hall. The winner advances to the state semifinals at State Farm Center in Champaign on Thursday, March 12.
On Friday, Parker Krogman led Eastland (29-5) with 13 points, Carroll had 12 and Braden Anderson had 11. Zy Haverland scored six while playing key defense inside against Pec’s Zion Braih mah (22 points).
Eastland trailed 24-23 at halftime before creating some distance with a 15-9 run in the third quarter.
The Indians (22-14), coming off a 70-66 overtime win over Newman, had chances to come back in the fourth quarter, but Eastland continued to answer on defense with stops, steals or key rebounds.

Degner scored six and Izaiah Braimah had three.
Anderson scored nine of his 11 points in the third quarter.
The Cougars were 0 of 6 at the line before Carroll sunk a pair to make it 46-41 with 32 seconds left. His key steal came on the ensuing Pec possession as he scored six of Eastland’s 10 points in the fourth quarter.
“I practice every day,” he said of his free throws. “Before school, after school, the hard work really paid off in that moment.”
While Braimah was big inside for Pec, Connor Berg was their second highest scorer with 10 points. Karter
With Haverland picking up two fouls, he sat for most of the second quarter. The Cougars were still able to limit Zion to two points in the frame. He had 34 in the win over Newman.
“That was huge,” Haverland said. “Obviously, Zion’s a great player on the inside. He can score at will. So to have the guys step up on defense and only be down one at halftime, that kind of put us in position to come back in that third and fourth quarter.
“We knew if we kept them in the 50s or lower, that we had a good chance of winning. And that’s what the guys did when I was off the court.”
For the game, Pecatonica had 14 turnovers while Eastland had eight.
“We knew it was going to be tough with Zion and their shooters,” Eastland coach Tyler Zumdahl said. “[I] didn’t think we quite had the intensity or the edge we needed to in the first half, but give the guys credit, they really stepped up in the second half to get some stops and get some turnovers.”
Despite losing three senior starters from last year’s state runner-up team, the Cougars came out on top of a tough sectional once again.
“I don’t know if anybody really thought with what we lost last year,
we’d be able to get back to this point,” Zumdahl said. “Our guys never cared about that. They set this goal, they believed it, they worked. Everybody stepped up in their new roles, really came together and we’re playing some of our best, grittiest basketball at the right time.”
Krogman said it takes consistency to beat a team like Pecatonica three times in one season. It has resulted in accomplishing a goal of getting back to the Elite Eight.
“To come out here and take care of business again, it feels pretty good,” he said. “I think it’s a great opportunity. Get to the Elite Eight, and go from there.”
