Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has selected a Morrison native as the next Assistant Adjutant General – Air of the Illinois National Guard.
Pritzker has chosen Illinois Air National Guard Director of Staff Col. Steven B. Rice for that leadership position, the Illinois National Guard announced Monday, Dec. 29.
Rice will replace Maj. Gen. Dan McDonough, who will retire after nearly 38 years of military service.
“Colonel Rice was an enlisted airman for the first 15 years of his career, so he understands the Illinois Air National Guard from the ground-level up,” Pritzker said in a news release. “His proven leadership abilities and years of technical Air Force experience make him an excellent choice to serve our state and the Illinois Air National Guard airmen and their families in this role.”
With the selection, Rice will be promoted to brigadier general and will serve as one of two Governor-appointed deputies to Major Gen. Rodney Boyd, the Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard, according to the release.
The other deputy is Brigadier Gen. Lenny Williams, the Assistant Adjutant General – Army.
“Colonel Rice is ready to take the reins of the Illinois Air National Guard as the Assistant Adjutant General,” Boyd said.
“He has worked closely with me, Major General McDonough and Illinois Air National Guard Chief of Staff Brigadier General Kevin Jacobs. We are all confident in Colonel Rice’s ability to help lead the Illinois Air National Guard as the National Guard and the Air Force transforms to meet future challenges,” Boyd said.
“I am honored to be selected as the next Assistant Adjutant General – Air of the Illinois National Guard,” Rice
I am honored to be selected as the next Assistant Adjutant General – Air of the Illinois National Guard. I’m grateful to the Governor [JB Pritzker], Major General Boyd, Major General McDonough and Brigadier General Jacobs for their confidence in me. However, I’m most grateful to the fellow airmen I have served with from 1986 on. I have received mentorship from airmen, noncommissioned officers and commissioned officers from the day I first put on the U.S. Air Force uniform. It takes a community to build Air Force leaders.”

He will also supervise a full-time force of over 900 federal and state employees.

Doug Hicks has owned Farmchains.com and C&N Supply in Dixon since 2021, having taken over both businesses upon the death of his father-in-law Ken Novak. Hicks has expanded the business to incorporate a greater online presence, and opened a larger location, having moved from downtown Dixon.
By Cody Cutter Sauk Valley Media
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link — and a machine is only as strong as its weakest chain. It’s a good thing a Dixon business is around to make sure those machines keep up their strength. Just ask a farmer how important chains are. All it takes is one busted bunch of links and everything can grind to a halt on the farm. That’s when Doug Hicks steps up to help get things moving again.
Hicks is the first link on a one-man supply chain at Farmchains.com (the business’s name as well as its website), which specializes in hard-to-find chains for ag and industrial applications. When other companies and dealers may have stopped selling parts for older equipment, such as steel detachable chains, Farmchains.com keeps them on its shelves.
The business also shares space with C&N Supply, an industrial supply company with roots stretching back nearly four decades, and both are owned by Hicks, a former Lee County sheriff’s deputy who traded a badge for chains a few years ago and hasn’t looked back since.
The shop’s supply includes hard-to-find chains for old drills, old planters and old manure spreaders and their aprons, the kind of chains farmers need to keep their ol’ reliable equipment working — and keep a few extra bucks in their pocket, too. Fixing something that’s broken down is a lot cheaper than having to break down and buy a new piece of equipment.

“For these small farmers, new manure spreaders are huge and are [a lot of money],” Hicks said, but when a farmer can keep an old machine running instead of buying new one, it’s good news for the bottom line. “You can buy a whole apron and they’re back up and running again.”

Farmchains.com specializes in steel detachable chain made by Allied-Locke in Dixon, which is the only manufacturer in the nation still producing it. Inventory includes 25 and 32W chains for old seeders and planters; 55 and 62 chains for bale elevators; 67H, 67XH and S-chain for manure spreader aprons; and 67W chains for gathering chains on old corn pickers. Hicks also sells attachment

links, standard roller chain ranging from go-kart size to combine-grade, gathering chains for corn heads, manure spreader aprons and sprockets.
It’s a deep, deliberately curated stock that turns product knowledge into a competitive edge.
“I’ve always believed that when the customer calls, it’s very important to have knowledge of what you’re talking about and to have the product in stock,” Hicks said. “If you have it in stock, it’s hard for them to say no and check with someone else on pricing.”

The customer base reflects that specialization. In addition to older farmers, Amish and Mennonite farmers from the Midwest and Northeast also are frequent callers, relying on older equipment and valuing someone who understands it. Hicks also gets the occasional antique tractor owner looking for steel detachable chain for display or demonstrations.
And when those customers call, they don’t get routed to some remote call center queue, the call goes right to Hicks’ pocket — his cellphone that he carries with him. Customers can also text photos, send measurements and troubleshoot outside normal business hours. It’s that kind of commitment to customer service and attention to small details that makes a big difference, especially when a piece of equipment is down.
The mindset of helping first and selling second traces back to Hicks’ earlier career.
“It’s not necessarily selling to them, it’s more about helping them,” Hicks said.

“Coming from law enforcement, that’s what you kind of do, to help people. That’s what Farmchains does, it helps farmers get their old equipment back up and running again.”
Farmchains.com began in 2008, but its story stretches back even further, when things first started getting a little “Krazy” at a downtown Dixon storefront.

Ken Novak, Hicks’ father-in-law, founded C&N Supply in 1986 as an industrial supply store. At the time, northern Illinois still had a strong manufacturing base, and C&N did a lot of business with industries throughout the Rockford area. Novak — whose shtick was being “Krazy Ken, the Farmer’s Friend” — knew his products, especially chain. Before

opening his own business, he sold for Allied-Locke, where he learned the ins and outs of farm chain applications, knowledge that would later become the backbone of Farmchains.com.

But as industry dried up and factories shut down, the industrial side of the business took a hit. Farming, however, endured, and in 2008 Novak launched Farmchains.com as a way to serve a different kind of customer, one who still relied on equipment built long before onboard computers and dealer-exclusive parts. Today, C&N Supply is still part of the operation — selling drill bits, end mills, caps, bandsaw blades, cutting tools and Herschel tillage parts — but it’s Farmchains.com that takes up most of Hicks’ focus these days.
In its first year, the online experiment did even better than expected, generating enough sales for a solid start for a niche business.
“Farmchains is mostly an online business, and it’s grown ever since,” Hicks said. “I would say 85 percent of sales is online or by calling, so I don’t get a ton of walk-in business.”

Back when Farmchains began, Novak was still the face of the operation. He traveled. A lot. Farm and trade shows across the country, roughly 10 a year, were among his destinations. As technology advanced and the online world grew, the business became less about the storefront being at the forefront and more about the website being there.

“With that side of business, you once had to do it to get the name out there in the beginning,” Hicks said. “Now, the world operates around a cell phone and a search engine, where you can see who comes up first. Customers will search for what they need on their cell phone or computer, and you have to be right at the top of that search engine.”
Then came a turning point for Hicks, both personally and professionally. There had been some uncertainty about the future of the business when Novak was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, but in 2019 Hicks took on a different duty. He retired from the Lee County Sheriff’s Department and joined the business full-time, initially running the Farmchains side. When Novak died in 2021, he took over ownership of • See KEEPING THINGS on next page
both Farmchains.com and C&N Supply.
“It didn’t seem like anyone was interested in the business within the family,” Hicks said. “I left [the sheriff’s department] kind of early — I had 21 years in — and decided to take the chance and come work for Ken.”
Hicks grew up on a family farm south of Harmon and attended Amboy schools. He met his wife,
Amanda, in high school; the two married in 2002 and have three children. “Having grown up on a family farm, it was kind of a no-brainer to come in and run Farmchains,” he said.
After taking over the businesses, Hicks embraced the internet in a way that his father-in-law was hesitant to adapt to, and it’s paid off. From 202125, business has grown roughly 30 percent, he said. Even during the coronavirus pandemic, which

Modern farming runs on data. Fiber internet delivers speed, stability and future-proof technology to keep you competitive and productive.

disrupted so many operations, the business turned into an unexpected high-water mark.
The shift from show floors to search engines didn’t happen overnight. Novak was reluctant to lean too hard into online marketing at first, hesitant about search engine optimization strategies and a heavy digital presence. The results, however, were hard to ignore: Hicks hired an online marketing firm to help manage the shop’s digital footprint, and he stopped doing farm shows altogether.
The phones kept ringing anyway.
“We have grown every year since then,” Hicks said. “We had a record year last year. We had a record month, and we had a record back-to-back month.”
Another pivotal moment came in 2023: A cracked structural beam in its old building in downtown Dixon forced Hicks’ hand. He could either invest money in an aging building or find a new home. He opted for the latter, a din the summer of 2023 began work on a new building south of town along state Route 26, opening it in spring 2024. The new building offers more space to work, room to handle deliveries and a location closer to farms.

Along with keeping C&N Supply in business, Hicks has also found another way to honor Novak’s legacy beyond the balance sheets: He established the “Krazy Ken The Farmer’s Friend” memorial agriculture scholarship, first awarded last summer to Dixon High School senior Cullen Shaner, who is attending University of Illinois in Champaign to pursue a degree in finance in ag business.
As for the future, Hicks is realistic. Right now, none of his children are interested in taking over the business, but, he added: “We’ll see what happens.”
Today, Hicks runs the operation largely on his own. He streamlined the ordering process after taking over, making it easier for customers to get exactly what they need without unnecessary backand-forth. It’s a one-man show built on experience, availability and product knowledge.
That knowledge matters, Hicks said, because the customers are not calling about new equipment.

“It’s a unique business because I sell a lot of chain that not a lot of dealers want to deal with,” Hicks said. “My typical customer is a 50-to-80-year-old farmer who farms a few hundred acres and has really old equipment. When they call their dealer, they don’t have any parts for them — they have all new equipment. That’s where I come in: They find me and I’m willing to talk with them and get them the part they need, or identify the chain that they need, and get it out to them quickly.”

Journey to Pi(e) Island with the Odell Public Library from 1 to 3:14 p.m. Saturday, March 14, to celebrate Pi Day.
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 because 3.14 are the first digits of the mathematical constant pi. Participants of all ages are invited to complete a “pi”rate treasure hunt filled with fun math and pie-based activities.
Completion of the treasure hunt rewards hungry explorers with freshbaked pie from Morrison’s own Pie Lady, Louise Clark. The event aims to bring the community together to explore and experience math in new ways. This is a free, drop-in event open to all.
Odell is one of 20 libraries nationwide to receive the Infinite Sums Rural & Small Libraries Cohort Grant from the Association for Rural & Small Libraries and SciStarter, in partnership with the Simons Foundation.
Anchored by three math-inspired events throughout the year – Pi Day (3.14), Infinity Day (8.8) and Fibonacci Day (11.23) – libraries will guide communities in embracing the beauty of math’s infinite possibilities. In addition to its many practical applications,
math is a fundamental element of the most beautiful things in our universe, including architecture, sports, fashion, nature, music, art and more.
The Simons Foundation’s Science, Society and Culture division seeks to provide opportunities for people to forge a connection to science – whether for the first time or a lifetime. Through their initiatives, they work to inspire a feeling of awe and wonder, foster connections between people and science and support environments that provide a sense of belonging.
The Simons Foundation’s mission is to advance the frontiers of research in mathematics and the basic sciences. Since its founding in 1994 by Jim and Marilyn Simons, the foundation has been a champion of basic science through grant funding, support for research and public engagement. The foundation believes in asking big questions and providing sustained support to researchers working to unravel the mysteries of the universe.
Odell is located at 307 S. Madison St., in Morrison.
This work is supported by the Simons Foundation as part of its Infinite Sums initiative. For information, visit infinitesums.simonsfoundation.org.

The 44th annual Carroll, Jo Daviess and Stephenson County Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 10 at Highland Community College brought together 23 talented student spellers from grades four through eight representing 12 school districts across the region.
Coordinated by the Regional Office of Education No. 8, the event featured top students who earned first or second place honors in their local school spelling bees.
After 14 competitive rounds, Grant Karberg, a seventh-grade student from Galena USD 120, was crowned the 2026
Regional Spelling Bee Champion. Joseph Pasch, a seventh-grade student representing Eastland CUSD 308, earned the title of first runner-up following an outstanding performance throughout the evening.
Karberg secured the championship by correctly spelling “untenable” followed by the championship word “aspish” to claim the regional title.
Karberg will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., where he will represent the region among the nation’s top young spellers. All participants will receive a commemorative Regional Spelling Bee T-shirt courtesy of the Regional Office of Education No. 8 in recognition of their hard work and dedication.

But the Newman junior just kept on winning, claiming four straight victories to take third place in the 110-pound bracket at the IHSA girls wrestling state championships in Bloomington.
Grennan was one of two Sauk Valley area medalists. Erie-Prophetstown’s Michelle Naftzger took fourth at 135 pounds, the girls program’s first medalist. Oregon freshman Kendra Ege fell in the third round of consolation.
“The weekend went well,” said Grennan, who was fourth as a freshman and was a win away from a medal last year. “I’m glad I could have that last one
back.”
That last one was her third-place match against Elk Grove’s Valeria Pesantes, who pinned Grennan in 1:17 in the quarterfinals.
Grennan returned the favor and then some in the third-place match, needing only 28 seconds for a fall against Pesantes for the third-place finish.
“I lost to her in the quarters so it was nice to get kind of get that back and prove to myself that I can do that,” Grennan said. “It proved to me I could do that.”
The lesson?
“If I attack, I win,” Grennan said. “I have to stay on that.”
After failing to medal last year, all of Grennan’s victories were pins, including the four matches after the quarterfi-
nal loss to Pesantes.
In her first match after the quarters, she was on the mat for seven seconds before winning by fall, then needed 38 seconds to win in the blood round and ensure a medal for the second time in three years.
“It was really important to get back on track,” Grennan said. “It really sucked losing but once I got back I just tried to trust my training, trust my coaches, trust myself. I just felt I reached a good point and can always get better.”
Naftzger had a similar road to Grennan, losing in the quarters but winning three times to reach the third-place match.
Unlike Grennan, Naftzger fell in the third-place match, 13-2 to Stevenson’s Karina Lojowski.
“It was a little bit of a roller coaster of a weekend,” Naftzger said. “I had a heartbreaker loss in the quarterfinals, so that was a quick turnaround to make it to Saturday.”
In the blood round, Naftzger beat Bella Castelli, 3-1 on a last-second takedown. Castelli beat Naftzger in the regional title match.
Neftzgler said she was happy to make history for Erie.
“It means a lot. There are a lot of kids that are looking up to me,” Naftzger said. “They’re watching this weekend and I’m just trying to set a good example for them. Just being able to show them what it takes to win, what it takes to lose and how to bounce back from that and how to be a good sport, it’s great to be a role model for the future of the program.”

In a battle of teams looking for their first Elite Eight appearances in at least 17 years, it was an edge in postseason experience that helped make the difference in Thursday’s Class 1A Eastland Sectional championship between Newman and Wethersfield.
Wethersfield junior Lana Scott scored 18 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to lead the Flying Geese to a 60-55 win. She’s averaged 19.8 points this postseason so far in wins over Fulton, Pecatonica, Eastland and Newman.
Scott hit three straight 3-pointers in the third quarter as Wethersfield outscored Newman 18-5 in the quarter to take control with a 45-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Comets struggled with turnovers and fouls as the Geese were 23 of 34 at the line. The Comets were 8 of 13. Newman was called for 26 fouls, and

“We didn’t make enough adjustments,” Newman coach Herb Martin said. “I think having a young team finally kind of got to us.”
Newman, which started three sophomores, won its first regional title since 2009 this season. The Geese (24-9) were playing in their second straight Sweet 16.
Newman beat Wethersfield 59-40 on Dec. 19 with starter Brooklyn Smith healthy. She had nine points in that game.
“It’s growing pains,” Martin said. “I’m glad that I’ll get most of them back. They all did a tremendous job. Lucy [Oetting], our lone senior, she did a great job for the last three years with me. I really enjoyed having her around. I really enjoyed all of them.”
Gisselle Martin led the Comets (26-7) with 22 points, including nine in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer just ahead of the final buzzer. She averaged 19 points in four games this postseason as a sophomore.
Oetting scored 13, Veronica Haley had eight, and Paizlee Williams and Elaina Allen each scored six. Williams, Allen and Anna Propheter fouled out for Newman.

Michelle Naftzger takes fourth: At 135 pounds, Erie-Prophetstown’s Michelle Naftzger won her first match 3-0 before a 15-8 setback. She followed it up with a win by pin, a 3-1 decision and another pin to reach the third-place match. She fell 13-2 to take fourth.
Castelli beat Naftzger in the regional
season since finishing 26-7 in 2005 when it finished fourth at state.
“We gave it our all for a young team,” Herb Martin said. “Hats off to Wethersfield. They’re well-coached, they didn’t give up, and they played extremely hard today.”
Scott had nine points in the first half as Newman led 31-27 at the break. Then, she caught fire. Her trio of 3s gave the Geese a 41-36 lead midway through the third quarter, and they never trailed again.
“We had to keep working,” Scott said. “No matter what happened in that last half, we were just going to keep fighting.”
Kyleigh Anderson added 10 points, Abbey Carman and Jordan Nelson each had eight and Camryn Anderson scored six for the Geese.
An Allen 3-pointer and a Haley basket were Newman’s only scores in the third quarter.
“This whole postseason we’ve been working really hard on defense, and we knew that was going to be the key factor to win this game,” Scott said. “We just knew that we had to stop their shooters as much as we could, and that’s ultimately what won us the game.”
The Geese are the only No. 3 seed left
title match.
Naftzger said she was happy to make history for the Panthers.

in Class 1A. They will face the Associated Press’ No. 1 Deer Creek-Mackinaw at 6 p.m. Monday in the Bureau Valley Supersectional, with a first-ever trip to state on the line.
Wethersfield coach Todd Hansen said Newman looks to remain a quality team in the coming years. The Geese also started just one senior Thursday.
“They’ve got a really good thing going over there,” he said.
Newman also looks to return Smith to the starting lineup after she missed much of the season due to injury. She continued to help motivate the team despite not being able to play.
“She’s really, really hungry for next year, and I’m excited for her to come back next year,” Herb Martin said. “I know she’s going to come back even stronger.
“All this was really painful for her to watch 20-something games and not being able to contribute. This is a very close group.”
While Oetting is a key loss, the Comets return the rest of the roster and more. Oetting is a Saint Louis University softball recruit.
“I think I’ve got about 11 freshmen coming in,” Herb Martin said. “So the program’s growing in the right direction and I’m proud of them all.”
