Sauk Valley Community College’s Impact Program rang in the new year with an incredible milestone. The program has reached 100,000 volunteer hours to date since its launch in 2021.

The achievement is a collaborative effort between Impact students and the more than 280 nonprofit organizations that partner with the program to make Impact’s mission possible, according to a news release.

“Reaching 100,000 volunteer hours is more than a milestone. It’s a testament to the dedication of our students and the incredible support of our nonprofit partners,” Executive Director of Student Recruiting and Impact Program Ashleigh Sorenson said. “Together, we are shaping leaders who understand the power of giv-

ing back and the impact they can make in their own communities.”

SVCC’s Impact Program is an earned-tuition program that provides eligible students within the Sauk district the opportunity to earn tuition and fees for up to three years at SVCC, or until they earn their degree – whichever comes first. Students must complete 100 hours of community service before high school graduation to qualify for the program.

Impact Program Volunteer Partners are nonprofit organizations within the Sauk Valley such as places of worship, schools, community event spaces and community-based organizations.

Volunteer opportunities are posted throughout the year for students to complete their hours and establish a connection within community spaces.

You can almost always spot an Impact

student out in the community, whether they’re serving at a local food pantry, setting up for a large community event, or helping at a school-run sporting event.

Parents and students have noted that volunteering with the Impact Program has enabled them to become confident and responsible leaders who are attaining career-readiness through real-world work settings.

LOCAL NEWS BRIEFS Byker to speak Jan. 14 at Wild Winter Wednesday

Wild Winter Wednesday’s Jan. 14 program will feature the Rev. John Byker speaking about the early history of Fulton and how Gerardus “George” deBey was instrumental as an early Fulton John Byker recruiter.

Byker was principal of Unity Christian School from 1974-1985 and then pastored four Christian Reformed churches. He now is retired and living in Clinton with his wife, Kathy.

The program will be held at the Windmill Cultural Center, 110 10th Ave., in Fulton.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m. for coffee, hot cider and Mill flour treats. The program begins about 9:15 a.m. The building is accessible and the program is free and open to the public.

If River Bend schools are canceled, delayed or have remote learning, Wild Winter Wednesday is canceled.

State Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, will host a series of office hours events, including one in Byron.

These events are an effort to make state resources accessible Tony McCombie to all residents throughout the 89th District, which includes all of Carroll and Jo Daviess counties.

This series is the first of many constituent-driven events that McCombie will continue throughout 2026. Hours will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the Byron Public Library, 100 S. Southern New Hampshire University announces fall 2025 President’s List

Southern New Hampshire University has named the following students to the fall 2025 President’s List. The fall terms run from September to December.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the president’s list.

$4.50 per bushel and has been there for a long time with some wiggles here and there for most of last year,” Janzen said.

USDA and farmdoc expect the 20252026 season-average corn price of $4 per bushel. USDA had ending stocks of 2.019 billion bushels as of the December estimate, while farmdoc’s year-end balance estimate is 2.132 billion bushels on slightly lower production, but also lower feed use and exports.

“USDA’s balance sheet has stocksto-use levels [12.5%] that are consistent with a corn price at the farm gate right around $4, and I don’t see any reason to deviate from that,” Janzen said.

“If anything, I think USDA might reduce its yield estimates going forward, that they’re still at a very high estimate for yield that a lot of people in the trade think is too high. But I think we’ll see corresponding reductions in use that kind of keep us around the price levels that we’re at.

“USDA is building in a healthy level of production; 95 million acres is their long-run corn acreage estimate for 2026.

That might be high, but even if you reduce that number, you’re still looking at a pretty substantial carryout. They have pretty optimistic expectations for feed use [6.1 billion bushels] and exports [3.2 billion bushels] going forward into 2026.

“We’re remain at stock levels that would be burdensome, that keep corn prices in that $4 range.”

By TOM C. DORAN tdoran@shawmedia.com Don’t let the prospect of ad hoc government support payments sway crop marketing plans in the current window of opportunities, according to an agricultural economist.

“The one place that you don’t necessarily want to put yourself is where you have a very narrow window to market what’s left of the 2025 crop,” Joe Janzen, a University of Illinois agricultural economist, said Dec. 12 at the University of Illinois Extension’s Farm Assets Conference.

“The danger that I see, particularly with the announcement of some ad hoc support payments to the farm sector, is kind of an unwillingness to think about moving bushels in January, February, March and holding that crop until right before the next harvest, and all that supply is going to come to market at one point in time. That’s likely to lead to relatively poor pricing in that, let’s say, May to July marketing window, when you’ve got to get ready for the crop that’s coming in 2026,” Janzen said.

“The one thing we can do, if we can’t predict prices, is at least spread those sales out over as wide of a window as possible to manage some of that risk.”

Soybean outlook

Price signals through late December indicate a swing back toward more soybean acres in 2026.

U.S. farmers planted 98.7 million acres of corn and 81.1 million acres of soybeans in 2025 – a much larger gap than usual historically.

“We do plant more corn acres than soybeans, but it’s usually much closer than it was in 2025. Price signals are not necessarily strongly encouraging that, but at least they’re swinging back toward more soybean acres, and I think that’s also built into the limits on soybean price upside,” Janzen said.

U of I’s farmdoc team concurs with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s December forecast that the 2025-2026 season-average soybean will be $10.50 per bushel.

The post-harvest soybean market has been volatile, particularly with the run-up of prices that began in the second half of October and peaked at just over $11.50 per bushel in mid-November before falling back.

“The difficult part is these slight rallies that we’ve seen in the last month and a half, maybe they’re the result of

We also got through harvest pretty quickly, and there is typically sort of a post-harvest rally,” Janzen said. “Once the combines stopped rolling and grain gets put in the bin, the market’s going to reward people who pull that out a little bit earlier than they might otherwise.”

Another market-swaying factor in the near future is the record Brazilian soybean crop that’s about to be harvested.

Brazil is projected to harvest 6.5 billion bushels of soybeans in 2026, compared to the previous record of 6.301 billion bushels in 2025.

“The global balance sheet is filling up,” Janzen said.

USDA forecasts soybean exports of 1.635 billion bushels in the current mar-

keting year, while farmdoc plugged in 1.5 billion bushels of exports in its balance sheet. USDA projects ending stocks of 290 million bushels, and farmdoc projects ending soybean supplies of 377 million bushels on lower production and exports.

“We are going to see the swing back to more soybean acres in 2026, that’s going to fill up the soybean balance sheet. I think there’s some reason to be maybe skeptical, even of the export number that USDA has for soybeans, given the story of where we’re at with China trade,” Janzen said.

Corn outlook

Corn prices are expected to grind sideways in the first half of 2026 because of continued high supply levels.

“The March futures price is around

Futures and basis corn and soybean prices have moved off the harvest lows.

“It’s really hard to sort out to what extent the post-harvest rally was export-news-driven and how much of it just was high inventories being held back by the U.S farmer and the market needing to rally to pull some of that grain into the supply chain,” Janzen said.

“How much is that trade optimism driving the soybean rally? Well, I think the last couple days [in mid-December] have suggested a good portion of that was maybe some misplaced [China trade] optimism.

“The current volatility in calendar spreads suggests some potential for a price volatility in 2026. The situation is much less certain with that volatility and spreads suggesting we’re not sure. We’re not slamming the brakes on marketing and saying, hold as much as you can. So, I think that puts the farmer in maybe a slightly more precarious position.”

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 16, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morrison, IL, with Rev. Dr. Michael Selburg, officiating. A graveside service with military honors will take place at 1:45 PM at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established to First Presbyterian Church in Morrison, IL and Morrison American Legion Post 328.

Larry was born February 6, 1931, in Sterling, IL, to Charles and Leah (Bugbee) Bealer. He was educated in the Fenton grade schools and was a graduate of Erie High School. He was raised in Fenton, IL, where he farmed with his father, learning the value of hard work at an

early age. Following high school, Larry completed technical training in the United States Air Force, where he served as a mechanic and attained the rank of staff sergeant. On June 14, 1959, he married Beverly Schuler in Fenton, IL. They shared their lives for over 66 years and made their home in Morrison, where they raised their family. Larry spent much of his working life operating heavy equipment while helping build and maintain the roadways in the Fenton area. For many years, he was a mechanic and service manager at Schuler Motors, Inc., before concluding his career with the Illinois Department of Transportation. He was a member of the Morrison American Legion Post 328. Larry was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morrison, where he served as an elder and served as property and maintenance manager for the church.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; three sons, Michael Bealer of Cowiche, WA, Phillip (Teri) Bealer of Hornbeak, TN and John Bealer of Kenosha, WI; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Janice (Bill) Lundin, Dee (Dan Wohlstadter) Berge and Joan Zuidema.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and all other family members that we have lost.

Sorensen challenger officially Illinois Attorney General wins removed from primary ballot civil hate crime lawsuit against

By CHARLENE BIELEMA cbielema@shawmedia.com A Rockford Democrat running against U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, D-Moline, in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District primary has officially been removed from the ballot, leaving Sorensen without a primary challenger as he seeks a third term.

The Illinois State Board of Elections on Jan. 7 upheld an objection to Montez Soliz’s candidate petition and officially removed him from the ballot.

Soliz filed his nomination papers Oct. 27. A Peoria resident filed an objection to Soliz’s candidacy Nov. 10, reportedly claiming Soliz’s petitions were not properly notarized and that several signatures were from people who either were not registered to vote at the listed address or by people who resided outside of the 17th District.

Soliz, in a Dec. 9 Facebook post, wrote that he had been removed from the ballot. That removal, however, did not become official until Illinois’ State Officers Electoral Board began meeting Jan. 7 to discuss objections to 2026 general primary election candidates’ campaigns, including the one filed against Soliz.

Jan. 8 was the last day for the election board to certify the names of candidates for the general primary election ballot to county clerks. Jan. 8 also marked the last day a candidate could file a withdrawal of candidacy to the State Board of Elections Office, was the last day for circuit court clerks and local elections officials to certify any binding public question or advisory referendums to the election authority having jurisdiction over the political subdivision and the last day for county clerks to certify to board of election commissioners any referendum questions to be submitted to the voters in a jurisdiction.

Illinois’ 17th Congressional District spans central and northwestern Illinois and encompasses all of Carroll, Rock Island, Whiteside and Knox counties, and parts of Mercer, Stephenson, Tazewell, McLean, Fulton, Peoria, Henry, Warren and McDonough counties. It is anchored by Rockford in the north and Bloomington-Normal to the south and includes Peoria and the Illinois side of the Quad-City region, which includes Rock Island, Moline and East Moline.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced Jan. 5 that his office has won the first civil hate crime lawsuit filed by the Attorney General’s office.

As a result of Raoul’s lawsuit, a Carroll County Circuit Court judge ordered two former Carroll County residents, who are white, to pay more than $90,000 for their months-long campaign of intimidation against their neighbor, who is a Black man.

“This behavior is shocking, racist and un-American. I appreciate the judge’s order that shows such despicable behavior will not be tolerated in our state,” Raoul said. “With dramatic increases in reported hate crimes, I will continue to use all of the tools at my disposal to prosecute hate crimes and send the message that hate has no place in Illinois.”

In the case prosecuted by Raoul’s office, Carroll County Circuit Court Judge Jerry Kane found that Chad Hampton, 49, of Victoria, and his mother, Cheryl Hampton, 70, of Rock

Island, violated the Illinois Hate Crime Act by engaging in intimidation and disorderly conduct toward their neighbor, Gregory Johnson.

Kane ordered Chad and Cheryl Hampton to each pay a $5,000 civil penalty, as well as actual and punitive damages of $45,000 each to Johnson.

According to Raoul’s lawsuit – filed in June 2022 – Chad and Cheryl Hampton engaged in months of racist behavior aimed at intimidating Johnson, including displaying a racial slur in front of a Confederate flag in a window directly facing the victim’s home.

Raoul alleged in his lawsuit that the escalating harassment came to a head with the Hamptons using a noose to lynch a bound and chained effigy of a Black man made to resemble Johnson from a tree directly in view of Johnson’s home.

The case marked the first time Raoul used expanded authority granted to his office under a 2018 amendment to the Illinois Hate Crimes Act, which allows for the Attorney General’s office to file civil lawsuits against perpetrators of hate crimes.

Lentils may be small in size compared with other beans and legumes, but they pack a significant amount of nutrition into that little package. They are rich in plant protein (second only to soybeans), fiber, vitamins and minerals, and they do not contain saturated fat or cholesterol.

Although better known in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries, lentils can be found in most grocery stores in the U.S. alongside other canned and dry beans. There are several varieties available, with brown, green and red being the most common.

There also is a black (sometimes called beluga) lentil available in specialty stores.

I like using dried lentils. While all canned beans are economical, dried beans and lentils are usually less than half the price of canned. One advantage of dried lentils over dried beans is that lentils do not require soaking, and they cook in a lot less time than other forms of dried beans.

Lentils can be used as a side dish or in salads. They can even be used to make taco filling or burger patties, but my favorite way to use them is in soups.

Everybody should have a good lentil soup recipe on hand, so here is one that you can try:

• 2 Tablespoons olive oil • 1 cup chopped onion (about 1 medium onion) • 2 cups chopped carrots (4 medium) • 2 celery stalks, chopped • ½ teaspoon ground cumin • 1 teaspoon sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 4 garlic cloves, minced or pressed • 1 (14-ounce) can diced tomatoes • ¾ cup dry green or brown lentils, rinsed • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar • 1 teaspoon dried thyme • 6 cups vegetable broth Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, carrots, celery, cumin, salt and several grinds of pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 8 minutes, or until the vegetables begin to soften. Stir in the garlic, tomatoes, lentils, vinegar, thyme and broth.

Cover and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.

Studies suggest that regularly eating lentils promotes good health and can reduce your risk of some diseases. Beneficial compounds in lentils can help lower blood pressure (potassium), protect against cancer (polyphenols and anti-oxidants), improve heart health (folate, iron and vitamin B1) and improve gut health (fiber).

Grab a bag of dried lentils the next time you are in the grocery store and give them a try.

Whiteside County Director Monique Castillo praises community for its support

By JEANNINE OTTO jotto@shawmedia.com When most people have put away the Christmas decorations, wrapping paper and ribbons, the director of the Whiteside County Toys for Tots program already is thinking about Christmas shopping.

“I have already started planning for it,” Monique Castillo, the new director of the Whiteside County Toys for Tots program, said.

The Whiteside County Toys for Tots program returned in 2025 – this time with Castillo at the helm – for a successful season of giving and receiving. The program distributed 2,745 toys to 950 families, with Castillo breathing new life into a program.

“It was amazing the way the com-

munity and businesses responded this year,” Castillo said.

Castillo is a familiar face in Sterling, having worked as assistant to the Sterling city clerk for more than 30 years. She was familiar with the Whiteside County Toys for Tots program, having previously assisted with administrative duties.

Castillo said she stepped away from the program a few years ago, but after urging from others in the national Toys for Tots network, Castillo put her hat in the ring and applied to be the local program’s director.

Castillo was approved as director of the program in July 2025. Her first goal was to let the community and the county know that Toys for Tots was back with a new director.

“The beginning was getting my name out, letting people know the program is here and it’s in good hands,” she said.

Her tenure at Sterling City Hall helped with that.

“I’ve been with the city for over 30

years, and a lot of people know me in the community, and I think that helped a lot in being able to work with everybody,” she said.

Castillo set up booths at events such as Sterling’s National Night Out to let people know about the program.

When the campaign started Oct. 1, the main task was to get the familiar, wrapped donation boxes out to as many businesses as possible throughout Whiteside County.

“A lot of people and businesses reached out to me. I had around 29 businesses who took boxes in the county,” Castillo said.

Castillo relied on the experience of Brick Boss and the Boss organization.

After the 2024 Whiteside County Toys for Tots was faced with a shortage of toys at the last minute, the Boss family stepped in and gathered, bought and distributed toys for the 2024 program.

“The Bosses were really helpful with those details. They said each child received two big items, a small item, a stocking stuffer and a book,

and I thought that was a good guideline to have. I may change some things about that, but it was good to have those guidelines this first year,” Castillo said.

With a successful 2025 behind her, Castillo said fundraising will be a priority for the 2026 program, along with some changes to the application process and possible changes to the distribution process. She has been encouraged by the fundraising efforts from the community.

“I have people in the community who do their own fundraising for the program,” Castillo said. “We have a group who does a private fundraising gala for Whiteside County Toys for Tots. It’s invitation only and it’s catered. It’s a beautiful event.

“Everyone who attends brings toys, and last year they gathered 250 toys and a $160 cash donation for the program. When I started, they came to me and said, ‘This is what we do.’ It’s just so wonderful to have support like that for the Toys for Tots program.”

This position replaces a talented and loyal Accountant in the Dixon Office, who is retiring. She will shadow her replacement for several months to ensure a seamless transition. The position includes working with a team of other finance professionals, who will also assist in the transition.

American Surveying & Engineering, Ltd is seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Accounting Administrator to manage the company's daily financial records. The ideal candidate has experience with full-cycle bookkeeping, is highly organized, and can work independently to ensure the accuracy and integrity of our financial data. As a key member of our accounting team, you will provide critical financial information that supports the company's operational and strategic decisions.

Responsibilities Record and categorize all daily financial transactions, including sales, purchases, receipts, and payments, in our accounting software.

Perform bank and credit card reconciliations monthly to ensure accuracy and resolve any discrepancies promptly.

Manage and assist accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.

Process payroll in a timely and accurate manner, including calculating wages, deductions, and tax withholdings. Prepare and file quarterly and annual payroll tax reports.

Generate key financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, for management review.

Set up all new employees' packages, including insurance, 401 (k), and other benefits.

Collaborate with our external accountant to assist with tax preparation and annual financial audits.

Maintain an organized and secure system of financial records, both digital and physical, for easy retrieval and compliance.

Handle other accounting and administrative tasks as needed to support the company's financial operations.

Qualifications Proven bookkeeping experience, with at least two years of experience preferred.

Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or other relevant applications. Our firm uses Deltek, and the successful candidate will be fully trained in-house.

Strong understanding of basic accounting principles and financial regulations.

High school diploma required; an associate's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field is a plus.

Expert-level knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and other office suite software.

Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate work.

High level of integrity and discretion when handling sensitive financial information.

Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members, vendors, and clients.

Salary and Benefits Excellent Pay is commensurate with skills and experience. The expected salary range is $50,000 or more, based on knowledge and experience. Overtime is not required, but when performed, it is at a one-and-a-half-hourly rate.
