And there are books too.

At the Frankfort Public Library, the staff is on a mission to help library card holders “Know the Perks of Your Library Card,” sharing the incredible access to a large range of materials, explained Library Director Amanda Kowalcze.

The library holdings of books, magazines, DVDs and music is just the start of its accessible collection. Museum Adventure Pass provides discounts and free passes to local museums. The library has access to a number of databases, from consumer reports to ancestry.com The library’s digital lab and maker space give cardholders a creative outlet to craft and create. Learn to sew or create a gift with the laser engraver.

And each month the library staff host a number of events to reach across the span of ages, from story times to book club discussions, try yoga or learn how to use a new tablet.

“The book club is a great way to get out and build friendships with a new community group,” Kowalcze said.

Of the teen programs she said the library’s Dungeons & Dragons events are among the most popular events for the age group.

One of the most used features of the library are the digital

downloads, including e-books and e-audio books, enabling card holders to read or listen on their tablet, computer and smart phone.

Whether commuting by train or car or reading in bed, library card holders enjoy access to a range of books and magazines through the library. There’s also access to streaming videos and music.

And for those who are unable to go to the library, the staff’s homebound services bring materials to library card holders homes, Kowalcze said.

The Frankfort Public Library has created a Library of Things Collection, varied objects that one would use for a home improvement project, traveling or around the house. Borrow a stud finder and finish that to-do list of hanging photos and wall art. Borrow a set of binoculars and try bird watching. There’s even special memory care kits with activities and games to help engage a family member experiencing memory loss, early dementia.

“We want our patrons to ‘Love my library’ as they discover what they can find within our library, said Jan Look, Frankfort Library Board President. “We work hard to make that happen.”

For the library staff, it’s important to be a visible part of the community, Kowalcze said. Her staff will be taking turns spending time in downtown Frankfort for the Summer Reading Program’s Fridays on the Green, bringing story times and featured guest presenters to Breidert Green on Fridays.

“It’s a great way to get the library out in the community,” Kowalcze said.

BUBBLY & CHOCOLATE WALK FEBRUARY 2025 The 5th Annual Bubbly & Chocolate Walk kicked off 2025 with a sparkling success. Guests enjoyed wine samples from Wine Thief Provisions and Bistro, along with chocolates and savory appetizers, all provided by local Chamber member businesses.

Attendees also had the opportunity to shop at each of these participating stores, making it a fun and flavorful way to support the community. Perfect weather, delicious treats, and great shopping made for a sweet start to the year.

The 2025 State of the Village Luncheon was a fantastic opportunity for Chamber members and community leaders to gather and learn about the latest developments in Frankfort. Held at Prestwick Country Club, the event brought together residents and key stakeholders to hear directly from Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle. Mayor Ogle provided valuable insights into the current state of the village, highlighted exciting upcoming developments, and shared future initiatives that will continue to shape our community. Attendees also had the chance to network and engage with fellow community members, making it an event that supported both professional and community growth. It was an informative and engaging afternoon that showcased the strength and progress of Frankfort.

With over 40 local Chamber businesses from Frankfort and surrounding communities, this event provides a great opportunity to connect with local entrepreneurs, discover unique products and services, and support the area’s vibrant business community. It’s a fun, family-friendly experience with beautiful weather and free admission, making it the perfect outing for everyone to enjoy.

The annual Frankfort Fall Festival takes place Labor Day Weekend and draws more than 250,000 visitors to the community. This nationally recognized arts and crafts event features more than 300 artisans from across the country showcasing their handmade products and services. With live entertainment, a multi-day carnival, a community parade on Sunday, and a wide selection of food vendors, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The 2024 festival had the distinct honor of being ranked No. 7 among Sunshine Artist Magazine’s Top 200 Best for 2024. The tagline for this event, “Where Creativity Meets Community,” reflects how the spirit of creativity blends seamlessly with the local traditions and spirit of Frankfort, celebrating both artistic expression and the strong bonds within the community.

CONCERTS ON THE GREEN Sundays June 15 through Aug. 24 • 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Breidert Green (no concert July 13) Music returns to downtown Frankfort with this free community event going strong for more than 30 years. Each week features a new musical performance of some of the best original and cover bands in the Southland and beyond. The event kicks off Father’s Day Weekend. Weekly attendance ranges from 500 to more than 1,000.

See the Chamber website for schedule of musical performances and musical genres. Get down early to find a space for blankets and chairs to enjoy the live music to start the week on a good note.

COMMUNITY GOLF OUTING Thursday, June 19 • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Green Garden Country Club The community is invited to join Frankfort Chamber of Commerce members for a fun-filled day on the links at the annual Community Golf Outing. The event kicks off with a Bloody Mary Bar at checkin, followed by a round of golf featuring games at select holes and plenty of opportunities to connect with local business leaders.

Afterward, enjoy dinner, drinks, and raffles while networking. The 2025 outing will feature a Hawaiian theme, adding a vibrant, tropical flair to the event. It’s the perfect opportunity to relax, connect and support the Chamber’s programming.

WINE & ALE WALK Sunday, Sept. 28 • 3 to 7 p.m Downtown Frankfort The 13th Annual Wine & Ale Walk is set to be another memorable event in downtown Frankfort! he Frankfort Park District provides a wide range of special events and recreational programs, encompassing over 300 acres of green space and 20 playgrounds for community enjoyment.

Recently, the Playground at Windy Hill Park underwent enhancements that include a new playground, a fitness station, and solarpowered charging stations. This year, the Fort Frankfort Playground at Commissioner’s Park will be renovated, funded primarily by a $1.7 million grant from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), secured by Senator Hastings. The updated playground will feature an inclusive design, ensuring access for individuals of all abilities. The plans for the park incorporate two play structures, swings, additional play equipment, two shelters with shade structures, and rubber surfacing. Completion of the construction is anticipated by August 2025.

The Park District offers recreational programming suitable for all age groups.

Additionally, there are leagues and athletics for basketball, soccer, 12-inch softball, and indoor flag football, along with local day and travel trips offered throughout the year.

The Park District also features an updated Splash Park, which opens in May and operates through August, contingent on weather conditions. The Splash Park hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday - Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Private rentals are available. The Frankfort Bark Park, located at the northwest corner of Commissioners Park at the intersection of 80th Avenue and Sauk Trail, provides three acres for residents’ dogs to enjoy. Dog owners are required to register their pets with the Frankfort Park District to obtain an access card. Annual fees are set at $60 for resident families and $70 for non-resident families, with renewal costs at $50 and $60, respectively. The Bark Park membership season runs from June 1, 2025, through May 31, 2026.

Additionally, Commissioners Park houses three pickleball courts, designed for this rapidly growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. The adjacent tennis courts have also been power washed to establish lines for pickleball play.

For those seeking tranquility, the park district provides fishing opportunities at Jackson Creek, Kohlhagen, Lakeview Estates North and South, and Roy and Dorothy Janssen parks. A valid Illinois sport fishing license is required and catch-and-release practices are encouraged.

FRANKFORT FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT

ervicing an area of roughly 41 square miles, the Frankfort Fire Protection District includes the villages of Frankfort, Mokena as well parts of Frankfort and Green Garden townships. The district’s has 70 members and staffs five stations throughout the area. In 2023 the fire protection district responded to more than 5,000 service calls.

Members of the Frankfort Fire Protection District respond to life and property-threatening emergencies, including fires, sudden medical emergencies and exposure to dangerous conditions.

Beyond responding to emergencies, the mission of the Frankfort Fire Protection District is education and enforcement of safe practices. This extends to residents and members of the business community.

Members of the Frankfort Fire Protection District review building codes and technicians from the district can provide parents with a car seat safety inspection to ensure children are properly secured in their child-safety seat.
