Get charged up about cycling on an electric bike

ower up your cycling with an electric bike and discover the opportunities speed and comfort can provide. Whether you’re looking to ride linger, faster, or with greater ease, an electric bicycle could be just the fit to get you rolling.

According to Jim Roden at Becky’s Bike Shop in Crystal Lake, electric bicycles are not difficult to maintain and require a regular outlet to charge the battery.

“The battery only takes 2-6 hours for a full charge,” says Roden.

And hitting top speeds of about 25-28 mph, these bikes become a legitimate and reliable from of transportation, allowing the rider to go faster and farther than a traditional bike. Long trail? No problem. Difficult hill or steep climb? No additional effort required.

Want a great alternative way to work or school, that won’t get you sweaty, but saves gas? Check out an electric bike.

Sharing the bike path

Everyone loves the path along the Fox River.

It is a glorious spot to enjoy nature and get exercise - away from the hustle and bustle of the traffic on the roads.

Even though this time is meant to be carefree, the path comes with some simple rules that will help us all get along: • When walking, stay on the right hand side of the path and leave room for faster bikes and runners to pass safely.

• If you have your dog with you enjoying the day, keep them on a leash close to you. No one wants to get tangled up in a leash or a pet running free.

• If you are passing a group on a bike, use your bell or announce your presence or speak in a polite, but loud voice “passing on your left”.

• Don’t try to set a land speed record.

The path isn’t a race rack. Slow down to a casual pace when passing slower groups or going by a playground.

• Teach kids to look both ways before darting across the path – just like they would when crossing a road.

• If you are a goose - none of these rules apply.

Most importantly, be patient and kind to each other and remind yourself this is a time and place for everyone to enjoy.

and Kayak Race Take in the sights from the Fox at annual CanoeBy Vicki Martinka Petersen For the 58th year, canoes and kayaks will dot a 10-mile stretch of the Fox River during the Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race.

The event, open to paddlers of all ages, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 2. Participants will have their choice of starting in St. Charles for a 10-mile race or Batavia for a 6-mile race heading toward the finish line at the Prisco Community Center/McCullough Park, 150 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora.

There’s something for everyone at the Fox River Canoe and Kayak Race, which features different divisions for canoes, kayaks and an open (noncompetitive) division.

For younger canoe participants, the Junior Boys, Girls or Mixed categories are for paddlers age 17 or younger, and the Adult/Youth division is for kids 14 or younger and adults 30 years or older. The Women’s and Men’s Competitive divisions are for ages 18 and older; and the Women

and Men Masters divisions are for ages 40 and up. Other canoe divisions include Century (both paddlers’ combined age is at least 100), Mixed Couple (man-woman team), Recreation (all ages) and Single Paddler. The Unlimited division is for any racing boat outside specifications of other classes, including ICF boats.

The kayak divisions include Women’s and Men’s Short for kayaks up to 15 feet; Women and Men Masters Short for participants at least age 40 with any kayak up to 15 feet; and Women’s and Men’s Long using sea kayak up to 18 feet excluding ICF kayaks, ICF trainers and surf skis. Other categories include Tandem paddler kayak for all ages and Unlimited for any single-paddler kayak, including ICF kayaks, ICF trainers, surf skis and USCA specified downriver kayaks.

Additionally there will be an open non-competitive division for any canoe or kayak.

No equipment? No problem. Canoes,

kayaks and tandem kayaks are available to rent. For the St. Charles race, the rental fee is $95 for a canoe, $55 for a kayak and $95 for a tandem kayak. Participants in the Batavia race can rent a canoe for $80, a kayak for $45, and $80 for a tandem kayak.

Entry fees for the St Charles race range from $15-$50 for canoe race; $15-$25 for the kayak race; and $15-$50 for the tandem kayak race.

The Batavia race costs $15-$40 for the canoe race; $15-$20 for the kayak race; and $15-$40 for the tandem kayak race.

Awards will be given to the top three boats in every division during the riverside lunch party and awards ceremony following the race.

An evening of reflection, on the water

hey’re called many things, such as lantern festivals, lights festivals, floating lanterns, or Chinese lanterns. Now you can experience the magic of thousands of lanterns as the soft lights reflect upon the water of the Fox River, right in downtown Aurora.

Water Lantern Festival is coming to River Edge Park on the Fox River on Saturday, May 18.

The festival –recently named Best Cultural Festival by USA TODAY 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards – illuminates the night with the launch of the personalized lanterns onto the water. Each unique lantern drifts out into the water as it joins other lanterns carrying messages of hope, love, happiness, healing, peace and connection.

Water Lantern Festival is filled with fun, happiness, hope, and great memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. This is a family-friendly event that can be shared by everyone.

Friends, families and neighbors, come together to create a peaceful, memorable experience.

The evening includes food trucks, games and activities, local vendors, music and the beauty of thousands

of lanterns adorned with messages of love, remembrances, hope, and dreams as they reflect upon the water.

Tickets begin at $25 in advance, (early bird pricing) and increase in the days leading up to the event, topping out at $40. Each ticket comes with the following: • Entry into the festival area • Floating lantern • Commemorative drawstring bag Marker • Wristband In addition, tickets are available for youth ages 8-14 at just $12 and younger children can attend the festival, without the lanterns etc., for free.

The price covers the cost of collecting and removing the lanterns from the water following the event as well as cleaning up any trash that may have been previously been in or around the water.

Water Lantern Festival is presented

This free festival featuring musical performances will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Adults 21 and over can purchase advance ticket packages to sample award-winning wines. The Intro to Wine Package costs $15 and includes seven tasting tickets, a souvenir wine glass and wristband. The Wine Lovers Package features 14 tasting tickets, souvenir wine glass and wristband for $20. And the Wine for Two Package costs $25 and includes 14 tasting tickets, and two souvenir wine glasses and wristbands. All package prices increase $5 and come with two less tasting tickets if purchased at the door.

Additional tasting tickets cost $1 each.

RECUMBENT BIKES For those who’ve always loved cycling but had to stop because of an injury or physical limitation, recumbent bikes offer comfort and adaptability to allow everyone to once again enjoy riding the beautiful trails of Kane County.

Hal Honeyman, owner of The Bike Rack in St. Charles, describes recumbent bikes as “feet first,” and have a lower center of gravity compared to upright bikes, which makes them very stable. The bikes can either have two wheels in front and one in back, which is called a “tadpole,” or one wheel in front and two in the back, which is called a “delta trike.”

Honeyman says both are very comfortable and don’t put pressure on hands and wrists.

“Recumbent bikes are good for people of all ages, from young kids to adults,” he explains. “But we’re seeing a lot of aging baby boomers

who still want to be physically active but don’t find upright bikes as comfortable. These bikes have a nice mesh seat and a wide range of gears to make it easy to pedal under any condition.”

In addition to being good for a variety of terrains from roads to trails, recumbents often have electric assist, an electrical system built in to the pedals or rear wheel.

Honeyman says they’re “smart” systems, which allow the rider to choose how much assist they want.

“If you’re on a big hill, you can engage the motor, and that will add help, but there’s no throttle,” he explains.

And anyone looking for a tough workout can find one on a recumbent. In fact, Honeyman says you can even get a better workout compared to an upright bike.

“They engage more large muscle groups, the legs and glutes and abdominals,” he says. “The population is aging and there is more interest in recumbents because they allow people to stay active, even with back or knee

problems, or any physical ailment.

People can ride with their families and participate.”

Another advantage of recumbent bikes is they are good for those with traumatic injuries or brain injuries because they are very adaptable and can be custom-made.

“You can get one with special pedals or one-side controls,” Honeyman says. “Recumbents are something that everyone can enjoy.

They’re fun, and anytime anyone tries one, they immediately get a smile on their face.”

“Some are mass-produced and some are custom-made, and they have different frames. They all have advantages. Taking a walk down the trail or going for a leisurely ride along the river are popular pastimes. But for those who seek out running and cycling more seriously – for sport and fitness – concerns can arise around stress, strain and injury.

“Running and cycling are two of the most utilized endurance sports in the world,” says Steven Mayer, MD, physiatrist and sports medicine specialist with Northwestern Medicine Orthopaedics. “We frequently see musculoskeletal injuries both at the recreational and competitive levels.”

The most common injuries in running, he says, occur from the hip downward. Starting high, strains to the iliotibial band is probably one of the most common soft tissue injuries, caused by overuse of the connective tissues that are located on the lateral or outer part of thigh and knee. Called Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS or IT band syndrome), it causes pain and tenderness in those areas, especially just above the knee joint.

Iliotibial band pain and tightness is treated with stretching, foam rolling, and specific exercises including hip strengthening as well.

Running certainly stresses weightbearing joints. Experts say our knees support up to seven times our weight while jogging, or running. But they don’t wear out from use.

“Generally speaking, the bones of the joint tend to not be weak, but

rather it is the soft tissue structures around the joint that causes the weakness such as tendon, ligament, and/or muscle,” Mayer says.

There are many different reasons the soft tissues can become weak.

A tight and overused muscle can become weak over time. Sometimes muscle strength is uneven from one side to the other, which promotes weakness in the less used muscle.

Take for example, a condition commonly referred to as “runners knee.” Officially called patellofemoral pain syndrome, it is typically secondary to some asymmetric strength deficits of the muscles that attach to the knee and/or the patella (kneecap), Mayer says.

Patellofemoral pain is treated with hip and core strengthening as well as quadriceps strengthening and hamstring stretching.

Also, anything that pinches a nerve in the body can create weakness around the joint, as can muscle atrophy from an injury or other disuse.

“We frequently are asked how people can protect and strengthen their joints naturally, without having to consider invasive options such as surgery or even injections,” Mayer

explains. “Fortunately there are some very reliable ways to approach this that most athletes will be very successful with.

First and foremost, he says, make sure you are at or close to an ideal weight.

“This takes a lot of pressure off of your joints no matter what activities are doing,” he says. “Some patients are able to do this on their own, and with other patients I will use one of our sports dietitians for more specific help.”

Core strengthening is also extremely important for protecting our joints during activities,” he says. A weak core will put more pressure on all of the joints, and increase your risk of injury.

“Some patients are able to do this on their own as well, and other patients we will use a personal trainer, athletic trainer, or physical therapist to help individualize a program to the athlete,” he says. “In addition to core strengthening we would like the muscles around the joints in question to be symmetric and strong, and this is something that a physician, therapists, or athletic trainer can evaluate individually.

Mayer says one recommendation for health joints is cross training.

“For example, I will tell runners to participate in cycling or swimming so they are not using the same exact muscles over and over again,” he explains. “This tends to keep the joints healthy and help prevent overuse injuries.”

Other injuries related to muscle tightness and fatigue include such things as achilles tendinosis, a persistent or recurring condition caused by repetitive trauma or an injury that hasn’t healed; and plantar fasciitis, commonly seen in runners and usually secondary to tight calf muscles.

Plantar fasciitis is another common overuse injury in runners, and can present stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning.

“This pain is typically in the arch of the foot,” he says. As you get up and move more, the pain normally decreases, but it might return after

long periods of standing or after rising from sitting. It is caused by an inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes (plantar fascia).

Achilles tendinosis and plantar fasciitis are treated primarily with core and hip strengthening as well as diligent calf stretching.

“Cyclists can also experience some of these injuries, as well as upper body injuries,” Mayer says. “Many of these are secondary to falls or nerve compression.”

One of the most common injuries for cyclists is a clavicle fracture secondary to a fall.

“Cyclists tend to fall and reach out their arm, which creates ideal forces to fracture the clavicle,” he explains. “We also see nerve impingement in cyclist, which can result from the prolonged amount of pressure they put on the extended wrist.”

Clavicle fractures, fortunately

usually will heal without surgery over several weeks. But nerve compression can be trickier. The first line of treated for a nerve issue is to stop the compressive activity.

In the event that is unsuccessful, sometimes an injection or even surgery needs to be considered depending on the severity of the injury, he says Many cyclists also suffer from thoracic myofascial pain, he says.

With this condition, pressure on sensitive points in your muscles (trigger points) causes pain in the muscle and sometimes in seemingly unrelated parts of your body. Mayer says that for cyclists, this can be relative to how tightly they grip the handlebars, and sometimes can become a chronic issue.

Picnic Perfect

If you’re taking your meal with you on the trail, here are a few great tips from experts to keep you fed and feeling fabulous, without the fuss: that must be served very hot or very cold. Also avoid anything that melts (like chocolate) and rather opt for a delicious doughnut, a sugar cookie or fruit for dessert.

 Pack light. If you’ll be riding or walking a distance, avoid heavy containers like a thermos or a mason jar, and instead opt for lighter paper or plastic bags. Napkins weigh less than silverware, so don’t be afraid to eat with your hands!  Want to keep healthy? Avoid green leafy salads and go for chunky cold veggies like celery sticks, carrot sticks and cucumber wedges instead. They’re simple to munch and won’t wilt in the heat of the day.  If you must keep something cold, try freezing your water bottle, for a great ice pack that won’t add weight to your load.  Steer clear of perishables, or anything

 Make a classic Girl Scout sit-upon to take along on the trail. These staples of scouting hikes and rides are the perfect picnic addition. All you need is a vinyl table cloth or tote bag, the Sunday newspaper and some duct tape or heavy twine, and you’ll keep your bottom warm and dry wherever you decide to sit. There are all kinds of styles and DIY on Pinterest.

Consider adding a loop on two sides, so you can wear it like a back pack while you ride the trail.

BIKES FOR BATAVIA KEEPS EVERYBODY OUT ENJOYING THE RIDE

O

ne of the best things about the beautiful Fox River Trail is how it brings the community together. Young and old, men and women, there are few folks who don’t enjoy a beautiful day along the riverfront.

“It’s one reason people move to this area. It’s one of this community’s best attributes,” says Batavia resident Matt Knowles. “There’s a large cycling community here and people can enjoy can cycle for three or four miles and be in the next town if they want to enjoy a meal or drink. Batavia is the best place to start and end your ride. There are lots of great shops and restaurants.”

And to make that idea possible for anyone and everyone, Knowles helped establish Bikes for Batavia, a program that provides bikes for individuals and families in need.

Knowles, who is the owner of All Spoked Up, a bike shop located right along the Fox River Trail, has worked with Bikes for Batavia to give away about 400 bikes since its inception five years ago.

“Biking is about freedom,” he says.

“When you have a bike, you’re not

bound to a particular location. You can get around. Everyone should have a bike.”

Knowles, who has been a member of the Batavia Bike Commission since 2009, worked with Joanne Spitz, co-founder CHIP IN Batavia, to start Bikes for Batavia, which receives donations of gently used bikes. Knowles is the program’s administrator, while Spitz and her organization work to identify families who need and/or want bikes. In addition to referrals from CHIP IN Batavia, Bikes for Batavia works with the local school district to identify children and teens who need bikes.

They provide information about the students, such as whether they are a boy or a girl, as well as their height and grade level. Knowles works with the program to match recipients with the right bikes for them.

The students come to the bike shop on a bike pickup day, where they are outfitted with a bike, a helmet and a lock.

Individuals who wish to donate a gently used bicycle can drop them off at All Spoked Up, where they are

repaired and stored until a student comes to pick them up.

Parts are replaced with the help of small monetary donations from local organizations, and Knowles and his team and All Spoked Up donate the labor to spruce up the bikes before they’re given away.

“The recipients are so grateful,” he says. “We gave out 15 bikes for Christmas. One mother told me she wouldn’t have been able to afford bikes for her whole family if it wasn’t for us.”

And Bikes for Batavia is not just about getting little kids a bike to ride with friends. For some recipients, the bike is their primary mode of transportation, helping get them get to work or the doctor.

“For people who don’t have a car, it’s essential,” Spitz says. “I worked with a man who walked to work every day and when we gave him a bike, he told me it changed his life.”
