Mobile COVID-19 testing is coming No out of pocket costs or symptoms required in order to get tested

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Ogle County residents will soon have a chance for a convenient COVID-19 test.

And for some, it will be right in their town.

Aunt Martha’s Health & Wellness will be sending a mobile testing unit to Forreston, Mt. Morris and Polo later this month. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the test, regardless of ability to pay.

COVID-19 symptoms are not required to get tested. There is no doctor’s note needed.

“They reached out to us,” Ogle County Health Department Public Administrator Kyle Auman said. “They have federal grant money to improve testing in rural areas. We want to keep testing at a high level. We’re trying to reach areas of Ogle County that aren’t as close to Rochelle Community Hospital and KSB. We’re trying to do more dates to have them available.”

The mobile testing unit will be in Forreston on Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 102 S. 1st Ave. Later that day, it will be in Mt. Morris from 2-4 p.m. at 2 W. Main St. It will be in Polo on Sept.

28 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 212 S. Division Ave. Those who want to get tested can call 708-747-7441 to reserve the mobile unit at their location. People can be tested regardless of their home address.

A COVID-19 mobile testing unit will be coming to Forreston, Polo and Mt. Morris this month “It’s free of charge,” Auman said. “You just have to fill out a questionnaire. At hospitals or other places it can cost up to $300, but most places bill insurance.”

Auman said he’s not sure what the demand will be for tests or how many people will be tested. The unit will be prepared for over 100 tests per site.

The OCHD worked recently to get a state testing site in the county, but those talks fell through. The mobile testing site is the department’s effort to get more tests done. KSB Hospital in Dixon has done over 80 tests in a day at high points. Rochelle has also had “max out” days.

“We’re definitely seeing an increase in tests,” Auman said. “We’re doing well compared to other rural counties around us. We’re seeing an increase in cases. Tuesday we had 20. Last week we had three double digit days. It’s definite-

ly a concern with increased cases and people need to be using those mitigating tactics.”

Auman said the OCHD has been receiving less complaints about businesses since the state implemented a rule that requires patrons to mask when interacting with servers.

Working with now-open schools has presented new challenges for the OCHD. As of Wednesday, there were 282 students and 12 school employees under observation and three positive cases linked to county schools. It has also created a heavy workload of contact tracing.

“Our goal is to work at the lowest possible level of getting potential exposures out,” Auman said. “We don’t want to even wipe out full classrooms and we haven’t had to yet. But I can’t say that it won’t close a whole school.”

Leaf River Lions to host free drive thru meal on Sept. 26 The Leaf River Lions Club will be holding a “Drive Thru Brat and Hot Dog” meal on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The drive thru will be located at the Bertolet Memorial Library parking lot in front of the new Memorial Gazebo. The cost for the meal is strictly a donation only are there will not be a charge.

“The Lions feel it is overdue to give something back to the community in spite of the COVID-19 pan-

demic we are dealing with,” a press release said. “Lion workers will be wearing their masks as they prepare the brats and hot dogs. Just get in your car or truck and drive thru, say ‘Hi’ and get a complimentary meal.

There will be a donation canister available for anyone that wishes.”

Resuming the club’s monthly breakfast is being discussed and more information will be forthcoming, the release said.

The Leaf River Lions Club will be host a “Drive Thru” Brat and Hot Dog meal on Saturday, Sept. 26. The drive thru will be located at the Bertolet Memorial Library parking lot in front of the new Memorial Gazebo.

Complaints, arrests were made due to bar’s live music

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A rash of noise complaints about a new bar close to a residential area near Oregon has prompted the Ogle County Board to approve a noise ordinance for unincorporated areas of the county.

The board approved the new ordinance 23-1 during its Tuesday meeting in response to noise complaints from residents who live near Sledgehammer’s, a bar located at 1450 N. Illinois 2.

The county’s existing noise ordinance only applied to barking dogs.

“I’ve received several emails from residents in the area,” Board Member Susie Corbitt said at Tuesday’s meeting. “Neighbors say they can’t sit outside and they’ve complained of profanity. Kids have to stay inside. This ordinance needs to be done regardless of the affected area in the county.”

Seven disorderly conduct arrests have been made in recent weeks stemming from noise complaints with local residents willing to press charges. Sledgehammer’s owner Jason Stombaugh and managers

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle has said that there have been noise complaints every weekend over the summer.

The new noise ordinance defines a public nuisance as “any excessively loud musical performances or any type or sound amplification system which can be heard at a distance greater than 500 feet from any property line of the source property.”

The ordinance takes effect from 8 p.m. each night until 8 a.m. each morning, with the exception of 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings. The Ogle County Fair and the Byron Dragway are exempt from the new noise ordinance.

The ordinance will be enforced by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office, the health department and the county’s zoning and planning department.

The fine upon conviction for a first offense is $500 and could reach $1,000 for later offenses.

The public comment section of Tuesday’s meeting included several emails read in support of Sledgehammer’s and its live music.

An email from Dawn Jansen read that there has been a “personal vengeance agenda” by the county against Sledgehammer’s and that the business has been unfairly targeted.

Another email from Scott Ward said Sledgehammer’s is a “destination” for bikers from up to 2-3 hours away and has unjustly received a

bad reputation due to the complaints and arrests.

Stombaugh and Wall also spoke during the public comment portion.

Stombaugh said he was in favor of an ordinance and that structure will give him clarity going forward. But the 500 feet rule didn’t sit right with him.

He said the noise carries over the river and flat areas and he’d prefer it be measured by decibels.

VanVickle has said that wouldn’t be possible due to equipment being needed to measure decibels.

“We also need it to say police can’t arrest us for disorderly conduct due to noise,” Stombaugh said. “There’s been seven arrests for that in front of customers for an ordinance that hasn’t existed. It’s all been before 8 p.m. on weekends. It’s causing a bad image. Please address this immediately.”

Wall’s comments included reading minutes from the meeting where Sledgehammer’s special use permit was approved where Stombaugh also said there’d be live music.

“We’ve tried to change things to work with the community,” Wall said. “We want more patrons. We want this dealt with immediately.

It’s not about us being disorderly.”

Ogle County Planning and Zoning Administrator Harry Adams said the special use permit does not give the bar license to exceed state noise laws or the new ordinance passed the county on Tuesday.

Ogle County reports sixth death, cases up to 595 Administrator tells board that trend is in the ‘wrong direction’

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Health Department reported its sixth death since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and three new cases on Tuesday, Sept. 15 totaling 595. Recoveries of documented cases stand at 535.

The death reported Tuesday was a female in her 70s. The OCHD reported its last death in the county on July 10, its first since June 1.

There were three new cases to

report Saturday, three on Sunday and 11 on Monday. Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

OCHD Public Administrator Kyle Auman gave a presentation on the state of the pandemic to the Ogle County Board at its Tuesday meeting.

“Unfortunately I don’t have great news,” Auman said. “Ogle County

and the region are trending in the wrong direction. We’ve had several days recently with double digit cases. Our seven-day rolling average is at 7.5. Warning stage is eight percent. We’re also reporting 92 cases per 100,000 people, well over the threshold of 50.”

Auman said 24 percent of the county population has been tested. That’s the highest in the region and among similar rural counties. The region is 6.2 percent positive as a whole.

Several other counties around Ogle are in the warning stage or near it.

Currently 276 people related to Ogle County schools are being observed for concerns of COVID-19 exposure. Auman called that “a lot of work.” Mobile testing vans are coming to multiple towns in Ogle County near the end of the month.

“Rochelle will also have one from the state on Sept. 25 and 26,” Auman said. “KSB has started special student testing. Anybody who wants a test can get tested. We’re seeing asymptomatic or mild symptoms in children. Anyone who thinks they’ve been exposed should be tested.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 266 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Other listings for area zip codes are: Stillman Valley, 61084, 28 cases; Byron, 61010, 87 cases; Davis Junction, 61020, 25 cases; Oregon, 61061, 51 cases; Mt. Morris, 61054, 40 cases; Polo, 61064, 28 cases; and Leaf River, 61047, 11 cases.

Ogle County is in a COVID-19 ‘warning status’ Oregon School District sees second COVID-19 positive

BY JEFF HELFRICH ​​​​​​​jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Ogle County is in a COVID-19 “warning status” for one metric.

Its “new case rate” for the week of Aug. 30 until Sept. 5 was 90, per 100,000, being one of the highest rates since March and reaching warning status.

For the same week, it reached a 7.5 percent positivity percentage.

The warning level for that metric is eight percent.

“With these numbers increasing we run the risk of needing to implement additional mitigation measures and restrictions on our activities,” The Ogle County Health Department wrote on its Facebook page Friday. “The mitigation measures could include no indoor dining, reductions in gathering sizes, the cancellation of indoor events and several other mitigation tactics to stop the spread of the virus.”

Ogle County has had several days in the last two weeks with double digit COVID-19 cases. It currently stands at 575 positive cases, 504 recoveries and five deaths.

The Oregon School District

announced its second district-related COVID-19 positive Friday in an email to families. One staff member at Oregon Elementary School is positive and under quarantine.

“In this case, the individual had been out of school,” Superintendent Tom Mahoney said. “They didn’t feel well. The exposure came from somebody in their household. It didn’t impact the school. They had been out of school. It’s the first positive for an adult.”

There are seven students under quarantine at OES, one under quarantine at David L. Rahn Middle School, seven at Oregon High School and none at Chana. Staff-wise, there is one adult. under quarantine at DLR.

Oregon saw its first positive case during the early weeks of school. No exposure came to the rest of the district from that case, Mahoney said.

Mahoney said he’s grateful there hasn’t been an exposure that came from school or a larger outbreak and praised his families and staff for making the right choices.

His district, however, is prepared if an outbreak takes place.

“I think at some point it will make it in,” Mahoney said. “The numbers and how the spread works, the percentages say at some point we’ll be impacted. We’re preparing for the worst. Our goal is to keep as many kids in school for as long as we can.”

The carnival will be housed at Chana United Methodist Church in the Fellowship Hall. The fair is for kids of all ages and young adults.

It offers more than 2,000 new or slightly used library-type books which have all been sanitized and are free.

All participants can receive multiple books. Entry to the fair is open to all local residents and requires a mask.

The church is also hosting its Chicken Noodle Drive Thru Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 4-6:30 p.m.

The cost of the dinner is $10 and

includes a hearty portion of homemade (from scratch) noodles and chicken, a generous serving of homegrown squash casserole, and freshly made warm orchard apple crisp.

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society Today feels like fall has arrived and there was even the thought of snow in the west by some weather commentators.

Maybe that will be up in the mountains. I am not ready for snow and cold weather. However the rain that has fallen has been a big help to everything growing which includes my flowers.

We have enjoyed our patio in the back and all the flowers.

Lately at the museum we have received some interesting artifacts and information. Jim Brantner from Sycamore stopped by last week with a Lion’s Club vest that belonged to his father, Bill Brantner. Bill was part of the original charter group to start the Lion’s Club in Polo. He was also a past president of the organization.

Jim carried in a big board with ribbons placed neatly on it. They all pertained to the Men’s Garden Club of Polo and other contests at Ogle County Fair, Amboy, Dixon, Franklin Grove, Sterling and Milledgeville.

How many of you even remember the Polo Men’s Garden Club of Polo? I do remember it and I had a feeling that

these ribbons had belonged to Ralph Keckler. So I gave Lola Jeanne Brantner a call to find out if I was correct.

She said yes that the ribbons all had been given to her father when he entered contests with his flowers. He only grew roses and his wife Viola also helped with the growing of flowers. Roses are a lot of hard work. She belonged to the Polo Women’s Garden Club which is still active today.

Jerry Brantner would go along with his grandfather to the contests and help carry in flowers so he has special memories of times with his grandfather. Jerry had kept the ribbons for many years but it was now time to place them somewhere else and the museum will be a good spot.

Other members of the Polo Men’s Garden Club were Ralph Ports, Ralph Avey and George Linker. These were the only names that Lola Jeanne Brantner could think of so I went to the museum to see if the Polo Men’s Garden Club had a file on their activities. I did not find a thing.

Can anyone help me with any information on this organization? What were the years and what other men might have had a part in growing flowers in our town?

These ribbons all pertained to the Men’s Garden Club of Polo and other contests at Ogle County Fair, Amboy, Dixon, Franklin Grove, Sterling and Milledgeville.

Also Jim Brantner wanted some information about a train wreck or derailment that happened north of Polo. He was a boy and remembered it since many railroad ties were left along the tracks on the Brantner Farm. They used those on the farm for many things.

Jerry said it had to be between the years of 1961 and 1967. I have not gone to the library to research since March or to the newspaper room at Blackhawk Waterways. This virus still makes me nervous. Maybe some of you can remember the train wreck and help me out with this one.

Pioneer locomotive viewed by crowd in 1948 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The following information is from the May 27, 1948 Ogle County Republican Newspaper.

“Oregon turned out almost en masse to view the old wood burning engine, now converted to the use of coal, a luggage car and a passenger car, which was the forerunner of the Great Northern Railroad and passed through here Tuesday on its own power with a speed of 25 miles per hour. As the little old gaudily painted and brass trimmed two drive-wheel engine and its two cars pulled into the city it was greeted by a large gathering.

“The entire grade school together with its teachers, went to the depot to view the first train ever to run on the present Great Northern Railroad.

“It took a side track while one of the huge diesel powered Zephyr trains came by on the main track.

Alongside the powerful Zephyr it looked small indeed, but when it first hit the rails in 1862 it was some train and a wonder to the passengers.

“The little old seats of the train presented a highly uncomfortable appearance, but in their time were thought to be comfortable. The engine with two drive wheels and a top speed of 25 miles per hour, is small indeed along side the mighty locomotives which sweep the rails today. Zephyr trains passing through Oregon maintain a speed of well over 100 miles per hour which in the days when the “William Crooks” was first put into use were never dreamed of.

“This old engine and the replica cars no doubt saw a lot of hard knocks in its day. Perhaps hostile Indians shot at it with bow and arrows and buffalo herds intercepted its progress, to say nothing of the grief of heaving wood on the flames of the boiler to keep up steam. If the wood was used up in the boiler before they reached a depot the crew made use of the wooden right-of-way fences to keep the train moving.

They also applied sand to the rails to improve traction when needed.”

On July 2, 1862 The William Crooks locomotive was the first to operate in Minnesota and the entire

Oregon residents turned out to view the old wood burning locomotive that was converted to coal as it stopped at the Oregon Depot in 1948. Photos supplied by Otto Dick

northwest. William Crooke and several dignitaries were the train’s first passengers.

This was the initial 10 mile track between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

This locomotive and cars, built in the East came as far west as possible by track and finally it was loaded onto a Mississippi River Barge to St. Paul.

The William Crooks was headed to the Chicago World’s Fair in 1948 as part of the Wheels A-Rolling Pageant. After being converted to a coal burning locomotive it could reach

speeds of 60 miles per hour.

Its headlight remained lit by kerosene which restricted travel to daylight hours only. The passenger car had its original candle holders from the days when they were lit by candle light and their original wood stove for warmth.

The William Crooks was placed on display at the St. Paul Union Depot in June 1954.

In June 1962 ownership of the locomotive was transferred to the Minnesota Historical Society. In 1975 the engine was moved to the

newly established Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota where it remains today.

In the same newspaper I found this article about the William Crooks Locomotive stopping at Oregon in 1948 was a class photo of my sister Betty’s graduating class.

The previous week’s newspaper showed a photo of the Oregon High School’s Prom Court.

Carol Adamson was the Queen and the attendants were Jane Brook-later Jane Etnyre and my sister Betty Dick.

L

iving near the Oregon football field, I thought I was imagining things on Friday night. The lights were on, there was music coming through the speakers and a bunch of kids looked to be on the field.

On closer inspection, footballs were indeed in the air. It was the Hawk football team going through one of its 20 allotted practices this fall.

Had not been the season postponed, this past Friday would have been a home game against Genoa-Kingston.

What was refreshing about the scenario was all the enthusiasm. Though the players have had opportunity to play taken from them by a governor who has seemingly wrested control of prep sports from the IHSA, that didn’t dampen their spirits.

They also practice a couple other times during the week, but opted to also partake in Friday Night Lights. I had a chance to chat with coach Nick Schneiderman for a bit and he was also upbeat.

It wasn’t an actual game-day experience, but there is something special about practicing under the lights and having music blasting from the loud speakers.

On Sept. 10, IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson issued a letter to the governor that seeks permission for the IHSA and its Sports Medicine Advisory Committee to resume control

over determining the resumption of sports.

With how poorly the current regime of governmental officials have run this state, why do we even need them interfering with the IHSA? It was just a few years ago that state legislators made fools of themselves by attempting to scrutinize internal IHSA records.

In one of what may be the biggest success story to come out of the Big Northern conference, James Robinson of Rockford Lutheran started at running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first week in the NFL. The 64 yards he gained in 16 carries was the most yards ever by an undrafted rookie.

While at Lutheran, he set the IHSA career rushing record with 9,045 yards. What stood out to me were his vision, cutting ability and physicality.

He wasn’t exceptionally fast, but had that innate gift of knowing what spots to run to and how to break tackles. The other thing that

stood out was how quiet he was and that hasn’t changed any in his professional career.

Speaking of the BNC, heard a replay of the memorable 44-42 regular season win by Byron over Stillman Valley in 1999, as WRHL is broadcasting a different game of the week from years past to fill the void of empty Friday nights.

They do a Rochelle game on the AM side and an area game on the FM. Byron, of course, went on to win the 3A state title with a 14-0 record, while Stillman Valley won 2A. A footnote to that season was Oregon coming from behind to beat SV 23-21 in what had to be an upset.

I was roaming the SV sidelines early in the game and can attest to a degree of over-confidence when the Cardinals took an easy 14-0 lead.

Honor JoLynn Ward At the end of the school year, a number of long-time employees retired. At the end of a normal year, there would have been parties and recognition ceremonies, but 2020 is not a normal year.

JoLynn Ward has been an instructional aide with the Oregon School district for a long time. For the library, she has been a trustee for a long time, helped when the new addition was being built, and is currently our board secretary.

Mrs. Ward, as the children know her, has spent her time recently making masks for people in the community, including library staff. We want to honor her in her retirement, and for her good works. A fund has been established in her name. Donations are being accepted.

It’s here The Oregon Public Library StoryWalk at Oregon Park West is now open. What is a StoryWalk? It is a book that has been disassembled, laminated and presented page by page to promote reading and exercise on a trail, bike path, or in store windows and as you stroll, you are directed to the next page in the story.

StoryWalk was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont in 2007, and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. Our hope is that this passive program can be used by all ages, groups, families and the Oregon School District. Thank you to the Etnyre Foundation and the Oregon Park District, for helping the Oregon Public Library present this unique reading experience. Polo man arrested on burglary, firearm charges

BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@saukvalley.com A 28-year-old Polo man with a history of burglary convictions is again facing burglary charges, this time after police say he broke into and stole items from a Polo home.

Devin T. Williams was arrested Tuesday on suspicion that he robbed a South Prairie Avenue residence on Aug. 25, and for unlawfully possessing a firearm,

according to a news release from the Polo Police Department.

Investigators Wednesday executed a search warrant on a Rockford residence linked to Williams, discovering property reported stolen from the Polo home, police said.

Williams was charged with one count of residential burglary, which carries 4 to 15 years in prison, and a fine of up to $25,000.

He was also charged with two counts of unlawful possession and use of a firearm

OUTDOOR SPORTS

Last week’s rainy weather may have had most Ogle County residents down in the dumps, but for fans of the Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club’s Mud Bogs Mother Nature came through in a big way.

Competitors from across northern Illinois and Iowa took part in the club’s mud bog races on Saturday at the club grounds, located east of Polo on Pines Road, across from the entrance to White Pines State Park.

Participants whose vehicles stalled out or got stuck in the bog, were pulled out by a pulley system powered by a large Ford farm tractor operated by club member Lance LeFevre, of Mt. Morris.

The club was founded in 1935 and was known for its hill climb event, held just southwest of what once was the Pines Drive-In Theater.

When the theater closed, the club purchased the land it was on, and eventually added other events.

Tigers boast many schools of fish Byron co-op brings together swimmers from six different high schools

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com The pool at Byron High School was a beehive of activity on last week, with swimmers churning out laps and divers hoping for clean entry into the crystal clear blue water.

And it wasn’t just Byron students.

The Byron Tigers have 24 girls on their co-op team this season, from six schools: Byron, Dixon, Oregon, Polo, Stillman Valley and Forreston.

“I like the co-op vibe,” second-year head coach Adam Gura said. “I like how it brings a lot of kids together under one sport, and they get an opportunity to learn more about kids in different schools and different environments. They come here and we’re all under one roof and under one name. It brings a lot more variety to our sport than you see in other sports.”

Oregon junior Avery Clark is also happy to be part of a mixed bag of swimmers.

“I really like that we have all this diversity, and we get to watch everybody come together and share their talent together,” Clark said. “Then we get to meet so many new people.

I wouldn’t know half these girls if I didn’t swim on this team.”

Clark is one of four Oregon students on the team, along with sophomores Emily Marshall, Liz Mois and Sophie Stender.

Clark is a returning state qualifer, having swum the 50 butterfly portion of the 200 medley relay.

There will be no relays in meets this season, however – a casualty of COVID-19 guidelines when it comes to swimming.

“I’m really bummed about that because I like to watch everybody come together and just get all excited together,” Clark said. “Individual races aren’t the same, but they’ll still be fun.”

Clark will likely compete in the butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke for the Tigers, and Gura is expecting big things.

“The great thing about Avery is how versatile she is in her events,” Gura said. “I can put her in anything and she’s going to be able to handle it.”

Marshall is penciled in as one of the Tigers’ sprinters, and is hoping to rack up points in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.

“Emily is just a beast in the water,” Gura said. “She’s built for

When asked what aspect of her game has been taken up a notch this season, Marshall didn’t hesitate. It is an improved flip turn.

“Those were slacking a little bit last year,” Marshall said with a smile.

Mois and Stender were volleyball players as freshmen. As volleyball will be a spring sport for the 2020-21 school year, they’re giving diving a try.

The team’s top diver is from Dixon, junior Laci Long. She was a state qualifier as a sophomore, but missed the initial cut by a mere two points. With no state meet this year to shoot for, she’s hoping to peak for a sectional on Oct. 24.

“With COVID, I can’t get a lot of practice time in, but I’ve really been working with my personal trainer,” Long said. “I’ve been running, keeping up my cardio, staying in shape, and treating this year as if we had a state meet. I’m pushing toward being at my best at the end.”

Long is joined by five other Dixon athletes: seniors Zara Shuey, Allison Zimmerman and Tianna Lonkert, junior Meah Helfrich and freshman

Brooke Sanchez.

Polo is represented by a pair of freshmen in Gaby Oliver and Piper Martin-Presley.

Many of the swimmers played other sports or have limited experience in the pool, but that is just fine with Gura. He likes the challenge of working with newcomers to the sport as much as his returning state

qualifiers.

“With the way the pandemic hit and swimming still being open, we have a lot of kids that are new to the sport and are either trying diving or swimming for the first time,” Gura said. “You get a kid like that and they’re interested in doing it, they’re great to work with.”

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com The Oregon and Polo cross country teams had a tall task ahead of them on Tuesday afternoon— keeping pace with hungry packs of Royal Lions.

Rockford Christian, one of the top programs in northern Illinois, flexed its muscles in a triangular at the reconfigured 3.1-mile course at Oregon Park West, winning both races without too much difficulty.

The girls race was the closest of the two. Rockford Christian finished with 24 points, 12 fewer than Oregon. Polo was third with 74.

The Hawks were paced by Leah Watters, who placed third with a time of 23 minutes, 2.5 seconds. She was bested by a pair of Royal Lions in Kelly Giardina (21:49) and Emma Joiner (22:50).

“I need to push harder to stay with the people ahead of me so then as I’m going through the race, I can pass some more,” Watters said. “I probably let them get too far ahead of me at the beginning, instead of trying to stay with them. That slowed me down, I think.”

“I’m not too disappointed,” Zeigler said. “Obviously conditions weren’t super ideal. It’s kind of hot for running today. Their course is nice, though. There were stretches we enjoyed. We just came from Eastland, and their course is up and down, up and down. This was different from any course I’ve run, and I had a fun time.”

Also competing for the Marcos were Elleanna Wells (16th, 26:13), Linnea Sundman (17th, 26:24), Teah Almasy (20th, 28:03) and Kaylee Lowry (25th, 30:37).

On the boys side, Rockford Christian had a perfect score of 15, and had the first eight runners to cross the finish line. Stephen Thomas won a time of 19:26, 2 seconds faster than D’Artagnon Beaver.

Oregon (60 points) edged Polo (65) for second place.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity Sept. 7 Larry Allen, 63, of Dixon was arrested at 12:19 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while license revoked after deputies responded to the intersection of Freeport Road and Sterling Road in reference to a two vehicle accident.

A vehicle being driven by Allen was traveling southbound on Freeport Road at which time it traveled off the west edge of the roadway.

The vehicle continued traveling southbound through the ditch before entering onto Sterling Road.

The vehicle driven by Allen then struck a northbound vehicle being driven by Harley Wilkinson, 20, of Freeport.

Wilkinson was transported to CGH Hospital and later flown to a Rockford-area hospital for treatment.

Allen was transported to KSB hospital for treatment. Deputies were assisted at

the scene by Polo Police and Polo Fire/ EMS. The accident remains under investigation.

Deputies were again dispatched to Sledgehammer’s later for a noise complaint of loud music and Coltrain was arrested again for disorderly conduct and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was able to post bond.

Sept. 11 Walter C. Brady, 21, of Dixon was arrested on two outstanding Ogle County warrants for failure to appear and criminal damage to property. Brady has two bonds, $1,608.03 (full cash) and $5,000 (10 percent). Brady was unable

Sept. 15 Scott L. Thorne, 48, of Rockford was arrested at 2:10 a.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 6,000 block of North Illinois 251. Thorne was also cited for no insurance and an equipment violation.

He was also wanted on a valid Boone County warrant. Thorne was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

Polo Area Senior Services finishing remodeling work

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Polo Area Senior Services has completed its kitchen remodeling.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant delay in getting remodeling supplies, but Board President Randy Hayes is hoping flooring for the carpeted area will be installed “very soon.”

“As soon as we get the carpeted area its new flooring, and we get all the necessary inspections that come with such a project, we will plan on re-opening and will be announcing the re-opening date,” Hayes said.

The Illinois Department on Aging has several requirements for senior center guests and visitors which will be implemented with the re-opening. Requirements include wearing face masks, maintaining social distancing, temperature checks and using hand sanitation upon arrival.

“We will also be following the guidelines from the State of Illinois regarding the maximum number of people for all gatherings,” Hayes said.

OBITUARIES GARY BAUER OREGON – On September 12, 2020, Gary Bauer, loving husband, father, brother, and son, passed away at the age of 74 in his home.

Gary was born Feb. 17, 1946 in Mendota to Gilbert and Virginia (Bell) Bauer, the oldest of four children.

He grew up and farmed in West Brooklyn, and he attended school in Shaw Station, Compton, and Mendota where he was a member of FFA. He enlisted in the Air Force, and served in Vietnam at the Tuy Hoa Air Base as a jet engine mechanic in 1968

ROBERT A. FUNK BAILEYVILLE – Robert A. Funk, 83, of Baileyville, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Liberty Village, Freeport.

Robert was born Nov. 18, 1936 in Ogle County, the son of Alvin and Mable (Kilker) Funk.

He married Johanna G. Alderks in Kings, on Sept. 8, 1956. Mrs. Funk passed away Nov. 10, 2012.

Robert farmed the Baileyville area his entire life. He also worked for Forreston

RUTH ANN LUDWIG HARPER – Ruth Ann Ludwig, 81, passed to her heavenly home on September 8, 2020 at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, peacefully surrounded by her family.

She was born Aug. 16, 1939 at Deaconess Hospital in Freeport to Clarence S. and Elizabeth C. (Buntjer) DeWall.

She was a 1957 graduate of Forreston High School. On June 24, 1960 she married her high school sweetheart and soul mate Lorence E. Ludwig at Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church, where she was baptized on March 17, 1940 and remained a lifelong member.

Ruth Ann and Lorence began their married life farming north of Baileyvilleand then on the DeWall/Ludwig family farm (listed as a centennial farm in 2004) before building a home near Harper, where they have resided since March 1, 1978.

Ruth Ann was a homemaker and ultimate farm wife, working alongside Lorence to ensure the family farm was

After returning from Vietnam, he met Cathy Bonnell and they married on April 17, 1971 in Dixon. They raised their two daughters, Melissa and Amy, in Compton. Gary and Cathy moved to Oregon after their daughters moved away for college.

He worked several decades at Swift & Company (later Rochelle Hormel Foods), and prior to his retirement he worked at Northern Illinois University.

He enjoyed taking care of his lawn, loving his many schnauzers over the years, and watching auto auctions and sports (specifically, Cubs baseball and

college football) on television with his dog Bella on his lap.

He loved old time rock and roll music and Coca-Cola.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy (Bonnell) of Oregon; canine companion, Bella; daughters, Melissa and Amy of Madison, Wisconsin; two brothers, Warren (Sandy) and George, both of Mendota; sister Kathy Knowlton of La Moille; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents.

Memorial donations in Gary’s name may be gifted to the Oregon EMT/Fire Department.

A memorial mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 201 Locust St, Sublette, with Rev. Randy Fronek officiating.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, masks and social distancing measures are required, including placing a hand over your heart in place of hugging and handshakes.

Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sublette.

He enjoyed boating and fishing, but most of all, attending all his grandchildren’s activities.

Surviving are two sons, Jeff (Nancy) Funk and Jerry (Holly) Funk; two daughters, Lynn (Rod) Genandt and Lori (Tim) Gipper; six grandchildren, Krysta (Ben) Dittmar, Andrew (Dani) Genandt, Kyle (Cydney) Gipper, Jordan Gipper, Haley (Michael) Bruner and Taylor Funk; and nine great-grandchildren, Paige Dittmar, Khloe Dittmar, Aria Genandt, Kings-

ton Genandt, Cruz Genandt, Harlow Genandt, Emerson Bruner, David Bagwell, and Colton Gipper.

Mr. Funk was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister at infancy.

Private family graveside services will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, at North Grove Evangelical Church.

A celebration of life will be held later.

Memorials can be made out to North Grove Evangelical Church in Mr. Funk’s memory.

She milked cows, fed pigs, drove tractors, gardened, canned, cooked, and baked. Ruth Ann served at Prairie Dell Church as an elder, trustee and also church secretary and reporter. She was also a Tri-F member.

She enjoyed playing the piano for Sunday school and the church organ for over 50 years, discontinuing due to deteriorating eyesight.

She sang vocal solos for many funerals in her church, as well as doing special music. She loved to sew, patching many pairs of jeans and socks for her husband, sons, and grandsons, along with making curtains and casserole carriers.

She also was a wonderful cook, always baking something special and making delicious soup.

She was a past member and secretary of the Horseshoe Riding Club of Leaf River and was a Stephenson County Farm Bureau member all her married life.

Upon graduating from high school,

Ruth Ann was employed at Freeport Insurance Company for 4 years, then stayed home and worked on the farm while raising two sons.

Later, she was employed at Freeport Memorial Hospital as a medical transcriptionist for 17 years.

Then, she worked at Economy Fire & Casualty/St. Paul Insurance/MetLife Home & Auto Insurance Co. retiring in January of 2002.

She loved visiting her children and their families. She was often found attending her grandchildren’s school events, church activities and musical performances.

In addition, she loved watching her grandsons play football. One highlight was Daniel being on the team that became state champions in 2014.

She also truly enjoyed all of Sara’s softball games and watching Marissa

cheerleading for her school.

She will be remembered for her great cooking and love towards everyone, but mostly remembered for her devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her loving husband, Lorence of 60 years; two sons; eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Eldest son Steven L. Ludwig with his wife, Vicki; children Matthew, Christopher, Andrew (Mckayla), Aaron, Nathaniel, and Marissa; and great-grandsons Cayden, Bentley, and Riley; and youngest son, Randall L. Ludwig with his wife Laura and children Sara (Josh Clark) and Daniel (Alleigh).

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Private family services were Sept. 12, at Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church, Shannon. Burial was in the church cemetery following the service.

The family was helped with arrangements by Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established in her name.
