Sauerkraut Days safeguards discussed Craft show, food trucks and sidewalk painting July 31-Aug. 1

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com This year’s version of Sauerkraut Days and the safeguards that will be in place during a pandemic, was the main topic at the Forreston Village Board meeting on Monday.

Village officials discussed how the town’s main festival will be held safely July 31 through Aug. 1.

There will be four food trucks downtown on Friday and Saturday and again Aug. 7-8.

There will be a craft show on Aug. 1.

A sidewalk painting competition will be held July 31-Aug. 1 with a rain date of

Aug. 7-8.

Jane Koeller spoke in the public comment section of the meeting on behalf of the Sauerkraut Days Committee and asked who would be in charge of breaking up groups of people if they gather against the state’s COVID-19 guidelines.

“I’m not going to be the social distance police this weekend,” Koeller said. “I don’t know how you want that to be handled. At the craft show only 50 (people) will be in the fenced-in area. We’re going to do what we can to suppress huge crowds where we can contain it. If I try to go and break people up, they’ll say, ‘Who are you?’”

Two food trucks will be in the main

parking lot downtown. Two others will be on the south side of Believe in the Children, spaced to encourage social distancing. The craft area’s numbers of people will be monitored on Cherry Street and sidewalk painting will only be done on every other square.

There will be three hand washing stations downtown and signs to encourage social distancing. Concerns were raised after the Ogle County Health Department voiced concerns of people gathering around food trucks in Oregon last weekend.

Forreston Police Chief Mike Boomgarden said his officers will do what they can to break people up if they need to, but arrests won’t be made.

“There will be two of us around,” Boomgarden said. “When I see folks out playing basketball, I say we’d like to have them split up. I haven’t had any problems with the groups. We will certainly be watching.”

POLO CITY COUNCIL

City discusses investing in new subdivision

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Polo City Council had an extended discussion at its meeting last week regarding investing in a subdivision in town and approved $7,500 to spend on engineering fees for estimates on factors like curb and gutter.

The city buying and developing the Buffalo Creek Subdivision from Dave and Laurie Sherrick has been discussed briefly at recent meetings. The reasoning for wanting a subdivision is to raise the population in Polo and help the school with enrollment.

Multiple members of the council spoke of a shortage of available homes and lots in Polo. Alderman Randy Schoon said on July 20 that TIF money could be used for some of the costs of developing the subdivision.

“I believe this is the single biggest thing that any of us will do if we make this work,” Schoon said. “For one thing, it’s going to save that school. If we lose that school, we lose our identity. And i don’t think time is on our side.”

Alderman Donald Sanders Jr. was the lone vote against approving the money for engineering estimates.

“I don’t want us gambling with the city’s money and hoping it works,” Sanders said. “If there’s a plan for how we’d get people in there, I’m all ears.”

Buying the land from the Sherricks would cost $435,000, Schoon said.

The idea of developing a subdivision elsewhere in town was also discussed.

Alderman Jim Busser thinks another location could be easier to sell lots in.

Busser mentioned land east, south and southwest of town that could be more

attractive for lots if it could be bought.

“I think the city should get involved in developing a subdivision,” Busser said. “ I don’t think that’s the place to do it. I don’t think the ground is good and the lots aren’t a good location. There’s too many valleys and too much low ground.”

The Sherrick land is already subdivided for 51 lots. The positive of buying that land is having the preliminary work already done, Schoon said.

“You’d have to start from square one and foot the bill for the drawing process and the whole ordeal if you went elsewhere,” Schoon said.

There was also talk of getting public input on the possible purchase and development of a subdivision.

“For me to feel comfortable doing this, we’d have to have a public hearing and see what they have to say,” Sanders said.

avoid and why we discourage large masked gatherings. We’re still working on contact tracing. We’ve had 50 people linked to the situation. The prom and various other activities.”

Auman said he’s “heard” that the prom, held at the Brandywine in Dixon, was consistent with masking and social distancing but that transmission can still happen through things like touching door handles.

Polo School District Superinten-

dent Kelly Mandrell declined to comment on the situation Tuesday.

The mother of an attendee to the prom confirmed to Ogle County Newspapers on Tuesday that her daughter tested positive after attending the prom.

She was tested July 20 at KSB Hospital and received her positive test on July 27. Other family members, some not showing any symptoms, have also tested positive.

The Polo Pool closed on Monday afternoon due to some staff members being potentially exposed to COVID19 that may have stemmed from Polo High School’s prom on July 18.

The pool, operated by the City of Polo, voluntarily closed after staff members learned of their exposure on Monday. The Ogle County Health Department did not mandate the closure and is working with the pool and the City of Polo on getting testing done.

“We’re not sure how long we’re going to close for,” Polo Pool Manager Kayla Bergstrom said. “We did it on our own. Staff members were exposed. We’re taking precautions and getting people tested. If they’re all negative, then we’ll open the doors. We’re following health

Oregon Park District fireworks show is Aug. 7 Social distancing to be part of the event at Oregon Park East

The display is set for approximately 9 p.m. at Oregon Park East. The event has been held at Oregon Park West in past years.

Fireworks will be launched from the lower edge of the park over the Rock River.

“The location will provide the greatest opportunity for people to see the fireworks from many locations in the downtown area and practice social distancing,” a press

The park district is currently working with the Oregon Fire Department, City of Oregon and IDOT to finalize the details. “Park East will remain closed to all spectators, but we encourage patrons to view from their vehicles and practice proper social distancing at all times,” the release said.

“OPD has provided the community with a fireworks show since we celebrated our 50th anniversary several years ago, but due to COVID19 we were forced to change gears,” Executive Director Erin Folk said.

“The district has had to make many sacrifices and limit programming because of COVID-19. The annual fireworks show is an opportunity to provide continued entertainment and some much-needed joy during an unusual time.”

“We were cautiously optimistic and continued to plan as long as we could, but after discussion with the Ogle County Public Health Department, and in the interest of public health, we felt it best to reduce the risks associated with hosting a large

public event,” said Jeff Bold, representing Encore. “An additional consideration included the impending start of the school year and the potential impact on the greater community. The decision was difficult, but the musicians scheduled and the supporting porch hosts are like family and we know it’s the right thing to do at this time. Thank you to the musicians and porches for registering, all worked hard trying to make 2020 happen and most have already committed to join us for PorchFest 2021 on Saturday, June 12.”

The US National Straw Sculpting Competition will open Aug. 7 and be on display through Aug. 23 on the Mt. Morris Campus.

Sculptures will be displayed with social distancing, voting will be on-line, and there will be no StrawFest day, normally scheduled for the closing weekend.

Modern inventions have helped families keep in touch

Well, two days before the wedding this cold front moved in and on the evening of the 22nd while we were having the rehearsal, you could see your breath. That night we had a very unusual major freeze and all those lovely four o’clocks were gone.

White petunias and white snapdragons managed to survive.

The day of the wedding we added a very popular hot chocolate bar and a little fur wrap for me. I even car-

ried a baked potato wrapped in foil to keep my hands warm during the reception.

I remember someone saying they had the best prime rib with the coldest of feet!! We never forgot how weather could change so quickly and we were lucky to have a very sunny day for the actual wedding.

So when the locusts start singing I know what is ahead in just a very few weeks.

Two weeks ago I was sitting on our patio in the evening and I suddenly heard the locusts singing.

Now if you pay any attention to the old sayings, you would realize that six weeks from the time the locusts start to sing, will be the first frost!

I looked around my patio at all the lovely flowers blooming that Stephanie at the high school had picked out for me and realized I am not ready for fall and the thought of frost.

And yet that old saying had made a believer out of me 25 years ago when we planned for Susan and Tim’s wedding.

The wedding was to be Sept. 23 and it was a hot, hot summer. It was the end of August and I had been working in flowers beds since the wedding was to be in our yard.

Polo.

Kyle is Steve and Cheri’s oldest boy from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is a physician assistant and has been busy with this virus.

We had not seen Anna Fay since Christmas and she was one year old on June 4. Kyle carried her out to the patio and put her down. I leaned over and said, “Hi, Anna Fay. What a sweet little gal you are!”

She threw open her arms as if to say, “Pick me up and give me a big hug!” I picked her up with Kyle’s help and we sat on the bench.

We talked about her new pink shoes and sang “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round.” What a darling and not the least bit afraid.

Those times of facetiming with her certainly did pay off.

All these modern inventions really do keep family in touch with each other at a time when families cannot be together.

Who would have thought 20 years ago that we would sit on our davenport in Polo and watch her play and talk to her when she lived many, many miles away.

I always think, what does the future hold for us.

Ronald Reagan visited Oregon on May 16, 1965 Around 1,000 people paid to hear him speak at the “new” OHS gymnasium Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one in a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK This article includes a newspaper account of Ronald Reagan’s visit to the “new” Oregon High School gym on May 16, 1965.

“Ronald Reagan well known in Northern Illinois made a rousing talk at the high school gym Sunday afternoon under auspices of the Women’s Club, the Young Republican Club, the Ogle County Republican Central Committee and the Teenage Republicans.

“He came to this area to be the speaker at a $50 plate dinner for Ray Page, state superintendent of schools, and gave part of his time up here to talks at Rockford and Oregon. The attendance was well over a thousand persons who paid an admission fee to hear his talk.

“The program was opened by Ogle County Republican Chairman John Maxson.

Mrs. Albert F. Madlener daughter of Gov. Lowden, introduced Congressman John B. Anderson who said a few words and then he introduced Reagan.

“He leveled criticism at what he called social planning which sometimes encourages students who are marginal students to quit school. He also promoted unity in the Republican Party stating in the past they divided themselves into separate camps with labels of conservative, liberal conservative, liberals and others.

“He stated isn’t it time we call ourselves just good Republicans?”

Ronald Reagan born Feb. 11, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois, was the second son of Jack and Nelle Reagan. His parents were relatively poor, moving and living in several towns before moving to Dixon, Illinois where he grew up to adulthood.

Ronald Reagan graduated from Dixon High School in 1928 and during this time period he worked as a lifeguard at Lowell Park. This was during the great depression.

After graduation he found a job at Davenport, Iowa as a radio announcer. In 1937 he moved to California and started his acting career.

His movie career playing the part of George Gupp in the movie Knute Rockne made him famous. He followed his movie career as a host of a popular weekly dramat-

In 1962 he registered as a member of the Republican Party. Before this he was a member of the Democrat Party.

In 1965 he decided to run for the Governor of California. He won that election with 58 percent of the vote and was reelected in 1970.

In November 1980, Reagan became the nation’s fortieth president. He appointed the first female Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O Connor. He was reelected in 1984.

By the mid 1990s he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and withdrew from public appearances.

Ronald Reagan possessed a gift for inspiring the American people with his speaking style and personality.

While seeing several events in the Oregon High School Gym, I never heard anyone mention that Ronald Reagan spoke here in 1965 during the time he was in Hollywood.

This was the same year he decided to start his political career running for Governor of California.

It’s amazing that he came from a poor family, going to school in Dixon and worked as a lifeguard, became a radio announcer and then became famous in Hollywood, entered politics as Governor of California and then the 40 and 41st President.

That’s pretty good, from a lifeguard to President.

READING MATTERS

Put a small amount of text on each page with support from photos and familiar words

you might add words like can, see, look, the, and, you or my. It is also good to include color words.

You can write them in the color if your child is not yet reading those words. It is also a great idea to include names they know how to read.

When I make books for young readers, I use a large font size or write a bit bigger than normal across the bottom or top of the page. I also leave extra space between words to help young readers who are still learning what a word is.

You can use any materials you have available. Recycle some paper that has been used on one side.

It can have lines or be blank. Cut up cereal boxes would work, too. Fasten the book together with things you have like staples, yarn or string. Have fun decorating the cover.

As an example, I recently made a book with my granddaughter. She and I read it, finished some sentences I left blank, and made illustrations to match the text.

We called the book See the Fish. The first page said: I can see the big fish. The next page said: I

can see the little fish. You could keep that same pattern for the whole book and add color words or any other describing words like striped.

We stopped after we read each page and drew the illustration. You’ll want to make the topic of your book something fairly easy to draw. For example, you could write a similar book about different shapes.

I chose to change the pattern after the first two pages and wrote a question on the next two pages: Can you see my _____ fish? As we read it together, she decided on color words to put in the blanks.

Then I wrote two pages with: I can see _____ fish. We put a number in the blank and made appropriate illustrations.

With one page left, she confidently knew what to write: The End! You can see that I used the same words over and over: I, can, see, the, my, you. This offers a chance for repeated reading practice of those sight words. Rereading these simple books is excellent practice for young readers. Be sure they point to the words as they read and look at the print even after they have the book memorized.

The books provide opportunities for building their success and confidence. More importantly, a part of the learning and a big benefit is in the process of making the book together with a special grown up.

So, enjoy some time together creating your own library of easy to read books!

Early readers need texts that support their beginning reading skills. Reading even a little bit every day will keep those skills sharp.

These books should have only a small amount of text on each page, strong support from the pictures, and mostly familiar words. This column will offer some suggestions for creating your own books with your beginning reader.

If your children or grandchildren have been in preschool, kindergarten, or first grade they have probably practiced reading sight words.

These are sometimes called high-frequency words., Researchers have compiled these lists of the most common words in all texts. Learning to read them automatically helps young readers as they are learning to read.

You might still have a list of sight words your child was working on during the school year.

If so, use those to build some simple sentences and create a book. If not, choose a few words you think your child might be able to read.

Most early readers will know the words I and a because they know the names of the letters. Then

Board hasn’t been meeting in person due to COVID-19

Support given for grant applications The board approved four resolutions of support for four county business applications for downstate small business stabilization grants during its July 21 meeting.

The $20 million program supports small businesses in suburban and rural counties across Illinois, providing grants of up to $25,000 to small businesses. Public Auction Service, Maxson Restaurant and Riverboat, National Bus Trader and the Dogwood Inn were the businesses that had their applications supported. Dogwood Inn and National Bus Trader were approved by a vote of 23-0 with one abstention.

Board member Wayne Reising (Oregon) said the businesses are clients of his and abstained. Maxson was approved 24-0. The vote for Public Auction service was 13-10 in favor with board member Lyle Hopkins (Polo) abstaining. His wife owns the business. That was the reasoning behind board members voting against it. “It gives a perception and we don’t need to work with that,� board member Dan Janes (Stillman Valley said. “We have enough issues. I can’t support it with it being an active member on the county board. I think it sets a precedent.�

During last week’s Ogle County Board virtual meeting, board member Benjamin Youman (Davis Junction) became frustrated and had to interject. “If you think you’re muted, you are not,� Youman said. “You’ve been talking on the phone and distracting everyone. So everyone, please make sure you’re muted and it’s proper protocol for teleconferences. You’re supposed to pay attention and not hold side conversations.�

The board has been conducting its meetings via Zoom, but board members and the public call in on their phones rather than over video online. A small group of board members and county employees run the meeting from the old courthouse. Board Chairman John Finfrock (Mt. Morris) said the meetings will continue to be this way and a potential change depends on “what the governor says�. Gatherings of 50 or less with masks and social distancing are allowed under the state’s current phase four, but Finfrock said it isn’t possible to distance everyone in the boardroom and allow everyone to have a microphone. There are 24 board members. Other county employees like county clerk and assistant, sheriff and state’s attorney attend the meetings. “We’re stuck with this, unfortunately,� Finfrock said. “And none of us like it. Our committee meetings with seven and five, those we do in person socially distanced. I’m not sure how long it’ll be for the big ones. And that’s a problem.�

virtually were hard to hear over the phone, but Finfrock said those issues have been resolved by meeting in a smaller room with everyone closer to the microphone. With the meetings being held virtually, all votes must be done by roll call, rather than using the ayes and nays system when protocol allows for it. That extra use of time has been among the frustrations of staying virtual. “We had a lot of yes’s tonight, but because it’s a virtual meeting, it requires a roll call for each vote,� Finfrock said. “Hopefully in the near future we can get back to what we like to do, and that’s get together as a group.�

Sheriff ’s office still working around COVID-19

BY JEFF HELFRICH ​​​​​​​jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com After scaling back traffic enforcement to protect deputies and the public from the spread of COVID-19, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle had to make a change in late May. “We had so many complaints on the road,” VanVickle said. “We let deputies go back to work with safeguards. Things were getting dangerous.”

Ogle County Jail operations are still different from normal with safeguards.

On March 13, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle closed the county jail to visitors. Visits were changed and done remotely. Intake policies have also been changed. Temperatures are being taken and questions

are being asked.

People being brought in for out-of-county warrants are being kept separate from Ogle inmates before they’re taken to other counties in an effort to fight the spread of Ogle County COVID-19.

Sheriff Brian “We’ve had VanVickle some people tested with contact tracing,” VanVickle said. “All were negative. Early on, we canceled vacations and travel to limit our people’s exposure. We’re a small organization, so we have to be careful.”

VanVickle is also on the coun-

ty’s emergency operations team.

The emergency operations center was activated until Mid-May. There was talk this week about reopening it with cases high last week, but the EOC team ultimately decided against it.

VanVickle and the EOC are working to provide county schools with personal protective equipment like masks for the fall as they plan to open with them required by the state.

“We put in an additional PPE request at the end of last week,” VanVickle said. “We have a good supply.”

There is a state-wide mandate that masks must be worn in public places. Late in May, VanVickle said he won’t be enforcing any COVID-19 state guidelines in Ogle County, on

the basis that there “isn’t a mechanism to charge or arrest somebody with.”

VanVickle plans to stay the course on that policy, despite a rise in cases last week.

“That’s still an issue that hasn’t been resolved,” VanVickle said. “It’s not enforceable. Until we get direction otherwise from the state or the state’s attorney, we can’t enforce it.

That’s the stance of most sheriffs throughout the state.”

The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t receive many calls about masks not being worn, VanVickle said.

“We don’t get called for those types of incidents. Businesses don’t call for that. It’s when people refuse to wear one. It hasn’t been common.

There’s been one in three weeks.”

COVID-19: Ogle County reports four new cases Documented recoveries stay at 323

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Health Department reported four new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, July 28, totaling 374. Recoveries of documented cases stand at 323, with no new ones Tuesday.

The OCHD reported its fifth death in the county on July 10, its first

since June 1. Ages and locations of the individuals are not being released to protect their privacy.

“Last week was more consistent or typical,” OCHD Public Administrator Kyle Auman said. “We are seeing a slight uptick. We had eight Monday and from the weekend. I think we’re going to see more with events taking place, we’re still seeing repercussions from the 4th of July.”

Auman believes the county is in an OK situation, but he believes the county will see cases creep up. He said he’s concerned for the future,

especially with school slated to start in the fall.

“I’ve heard of graduation parties happening,” Auman said. “Group gatherings will start to impact our numbers. Those will hurt as they

keep happening.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 184 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley’s zip code, 61084, has 13 cases in it according to the IDPH site. Byron’s zip code, 61010, has 44 cases. Davis Junction (61020) has 18 cases.

The zip codes that house Oregon (61061) and Mt. Morris (61054) have 30 and 25 cases, respectively.

Polo’s zip code, 61064, has 21 cases in it.

Rock River Center to resume Free Lunch Fridays The Rock River Center in Oregon will resume Free Lunch Friday starting in August.

The program, sponsored by the Etnyre Foundation, will adhere to Phase 4 guidelines as outlined by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

“We would like to thank the Etnyre Foundation for the $5,000 grant to sponsor lawn games and Free Lunch Fridays the first and third Fridays of each month,” said RRC Executive Director Jamie Nobis. “Lawn games

will be held in the multi-purpose room beginning at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by free lunch served at 11:30 a.m.”

Masks are required to enter Rock River Center and reservations for indoor dining will be available for 50 people based on social distancing.

Family groups count as one.

by Sledgehammer’s owner Jason Stombaugh that Ogle County Health Department Public Administrator Kyle Auman “raided” his property and “physically assaulted” him in an interaction on the night of July 17 at the bar off Illinois 2 near Oregon.

The claims were made in a Facebook post by Sledgehammer’s on Friday, July 24.

Auman was there around 10 p.m. doing an inspection of Sledgehammer’s, VanVickle said. Deputies responded after Auman tried to provide guidance that was refused

by Stombaugh. The health department then sent closure orders that “weren’t well-received” when deputies returned with Auman. “[Stombaugh] reported there was a physical altercation prior to when we arrived,” VanVickle said. “They said they had video of it. There was no video evidence that any physical altercation occurred.”

A report that was a “general overview” of the situation was filed and sent to the state’s attorney, VanVickle said.

“We were there to keep everyone safe,” VanVickle said. “Kyle did what the health department was required to do.”

Auman declined to comment on the situation Tuesday, saying it was a “pending legal situation.” Van-

Vickle said he was unsure if Auman was there for a general health inspection or if it was COVID-19 guideline-related.

Sledgehammer’s Facebook post on the matter said the following: “Sledgehammers came under attack from the Ogle County Health Department when Kyle Auman, the local health administrator raided our property and physically assaulted Jason, the owner of Sledgehammer’s. Due to the physical assault (sic) on Jason, in front of our patrons and staff, Kyle was not allowed on the propery (sic) without the escort of a Sheriff. At which time Kyle refused to do his inspection, and was removed from the property under the guidance of the Sheriff.”

“Sledgehammers and the entire

establishment is under attack, resulting in substantial loss of business, and astronomical monetary losses and expenses.”

VanVickle called the post “absolutely incorrect” and said that Auman is allowed on the property without the escort of a Sheriff’s deputy.

Sledgehammer’s replied to a comment on the post it made and said it would be staying open.

The Ogle County Board is also looking into a county noise ordinance after multiple noise complaints per week from the area near the bar since it reopened in recent months.

A phone message left with Sledgehammer’s on July 23 was not returned at the time of publication.

Straddle Creek Gardens specializes in growing garlic

The owners of Straddle Creek Gardens decided to plant sunflowers to help their bee population.

But now those three acres of big yellow, and yes orange flowers, have plenty of people buzzing about.

“We have our own bees and we planted the sunflowers for them,” said Darrin Eubanks who owns and operates the site with his wife Jenny.

“We got a lot of attention and people wanted to do cuts. Then we had enough to start a maze.”

People are now flocking to the maze to pick flowers and take pictures.

“COVID has been a big boost for us,” Darrin said. “People need family activities outdoors. A lot of families are spending the day here. Some even have picnics.”

The Carrasco family from Chicago made the trip from their home in Lake Carroll on Saturday.

“This is amazing,” said Josie. “The day was looking on the gloomy side so I said, ‘let’s go on over before the sunflowers are gone’.”

Josie’s husband, Ron, liked the visual appeal of the sunflowers as well as their other benefit for the bees. “It’s nice what the owners decided to do and to help the bees of course,” he said.

Straddle Creek Gardens’ specialty is farming garlic. It’s grown organically and sold on site, at farmer’s markets and online in forms like powder and salt The gourmet garlic is planted in October and harvested beginning in July. All of the processing is done on site. Darrin and Jenny usually attend national garlic festivals, but those events were canceled this year due to COVID-19.

“We’re hoping to host a garlic event in the fall to show people how we grow it,” Darrin said.

In the fall, Straddle Creek does a free fall festival with pumpkins and hayrides.

BRIEFS Senior Center golf outing Aug. 8 The Mt. Morris Senior Center will have its annual Hagemann-Miller Memorial Golf Outing fundraiser on the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 8.

Nine holes will be played at Sunset Golf Course, 216 Sunset Lane. The cost is $35 and will include nine holes of golf, a small goodie bag, game prizes, and a cart. We will stay socially distanced throughout the day, and when finished, golfing prizes will be awarded for hole games as well as a door prize.

School supply kit giveaway at Chana church The Chana Unoted Methodist Church will have new school supply kits available for children starting Aug. 1.

School supply kits include: a new backpack, pencils, eraser, glue sticks, pencil sharpener, crayons, ruler, pencil pouch, three folders and a packet of wide-lined loose leaf paper (college ruled for upper grades).

“Our Family Clothes Closet is open the first and third Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon,” said Chana UMC. Administrative Assistant Brenda McCasky. “All clothing is at no cost. We have a variety of clothes for children and adults. Everyone is welcome! The School Supply Kits will be available in the Clothes Closet for you to pick up.”

Kits are also available Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon.

• STRADDLE CREEK Continued from Page 13 The Eubanks started out by gardening and had several gardens throughout the county. The current property became available and Jenny decided to go full-time at the garden. Straddle Creek has been in business for two years.

The Eubanks also have goats on site and sell produce such as strawberries and tomatoes. They enjoy working on the 10-acre property with their grandchildren.

“We want families to come out and make memories and enjoy themselves,” Darrin said. “We try to keep it open for families to have a day out and understand where their food comes from.”

Do your thing. Let’s find these people. Dixon PD need help identifying alleged Reagan statue vandals,” and included photos of the two suspects, who turned out to be juveniles.

The tweet got around 20,000 retweets and comments.

Dixon police put out a call on social media on July 20 to identify two young women that had painted

“Black • Lives • Matter” in blue on the north side of the base, on the cement ring that encircles the statue, and police were able to identify them on Monday.

Dixon police thanked Trump Jr. on Twitter for his assistance – although the girls had been identified prior to his tweet – and also asked that anyone who shared the picture of them delete their posts.

OBITUARIES JOHN CHARLES HAYES John Charles Hayes died July 14, 2020.

He was 57.

John was born to Betty and Charles Hayes in Rockford. His earliest years were spent in Loves Park, Pecatonica, and Mt. Morris.

He graduated from Mt. Morris High School. He earned his AA from Highland Community College; and his Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate in Science (Physics) at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

John was a postdoctoral fellow at UC

EDWARD J. ‘DOC’ HOWES Edward J. “Doc” Howes, DVM, 87, formerly of Oregon, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 26, 2020 in his home in Rockford, with his family at his side.

He was born March 20, 1933 in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Cecelia (Teeling) Howes.

He was married to Shirley Casotti June 27, 1959 in Ames, Iowa.

He was a graduate of St. Patrick High School (Waukon, Iowa) and in 1962 graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Doc moved to Oregon in 1963 and purchased the Pines Meadow Veterinary Clinic, which he owned and operated until 1998. He continued to work for another 21 years at Alpine Veterinary Hospital in Rockford.

CHRISTOPHER P. STROUSE Christopher Paul Strouse, 50, lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at his home in Rockford, on July 22, 2020.

He came into our world May 19, 1970 in Rockford, to Clinton and Judy King Strouse.

Christopher graduated Oregon High school in 1988. He attended Rock Valley College, studying automotive repair,

MARVIN ‘MIKE’ T. STYKEL Marvin “Mike” T. Stykel, 84, of German Valley, died Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at FHN Memorial Hospital.

He was born December 21, 1935 in German Valley, the son of Tybo and Kathryn (Viel) Stykel.

Marvin married the love of his life, Birdine Ingold, September 12, 1959 in Freeport, and lived in German Valley all their lives, in the home Marvin built. ]Marvin was a mechanic for Miller

San Diego associated with the Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences.

His research included many areas involving computational astrophysics.

After UCSD, Hayes was hired as a computational physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

He was employed at LLNL for 13 years and was well liked and respected by his colleagues and friends.

In his free time, John enjoyed playing piano and guitar, reading, and listening

to music. He was an accomplished ballroom and West Coast Swing dancer and has many friends among that community.

He was admired for his dry wit, self deprecation, generous spirit, and his toothsome desserts.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his brother, Terrill Hayes (Laureen); his sister, Paula Stiefel (Thomas); his nephew, Christopher (Krista) and great-nephews, Alex and

Ethan.

John requested no funeral service. A memorial service may be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Callaghan Mortuary, Livermore, California.

John’s favorite charity was the Betty J and Charles W Hayes Memorial Music Scholarship at Highland Community College in Freeport. He was a US Navy Hospital Corpsman, Petty Officer 2nd Class and Korean War Veteran from 1951 - 1955.

While on active duty he was attached to Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division during the Korean War then subsequently assigned to Marine Air Group 13 in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii where he was honorably discharged.

Doc was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon, Oregon Rotary Club and the American and Illinois State Veterinary Associations.

He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears and enjoyed golfing, gardening and farming and attending his grandkids’ sporting and school events.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Rockford; sons, Mark Howes of Arlington Heights and Matt (Emily) Howes of Caledonia; daughters, Kathleen (Brent) Meade of Machesney Park, Kristine (Eric) Howes-Vonstein of Vinton, Iowa and Karol (Michael) Manley of Rockford; grandchildren, Nicholas Meade, Channing Carroll, Emily Howes-Vonstein, Lucy Howes-Vonstein; Sarah Howes, Luke Manley, Sam Manley, Jack Manley, Joseph Howes, Garrett Howes and Justin Howes; brothers, William (Jan) Howes of Brownsville, Minnesota and Thomas Howes of Bend, Oregon; and sisters, Mary Flottmeyer and Rosemarie (Charles) Link, both of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon with Rev. Joseph Naill, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Oregon. A celebration of Doc Howes’ life will be held at a later date.

Chris was well-liked and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, his annual visit to Las Vegas and being with his many friends and family.

He is proceeded in death by his mother Judy King Strouse; his grandparents, John and Doris King of Genoa, grandparents Basil and Clara Strouse of Kingston,.

There will be a private graveside service at Daysville Cemetery in Oregon for family and a celebration of life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Serenity Hospice & Home of Oregon, Illinois.

Funeral services were July 27, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, with Rev. Grant Mulder officiating. Burial was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a luncheon/celebration of life will be set for a later date. A memorial has been established in his memory.

ISP announce arrest of Rockford man on child pornography charges

A Rockford man has been arrested for distributing and possessing child pornography following an investigation by the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation.

Matthew David Spataro, 27, of Rockford, was arrested last week and charged with three counts of distribution of child pornography, Class X felonies;three counts of distribution of child pornography, Class 1 felonies; and 44 counts of possession of child pornography, Class 2 felonies.

On June 30, ISP investigators initiated an investigation after receiving information that Spataro was allegedly engaged in distributing and possessing child pornography, police said in a news release.

POLO POLICE Polo Police Chief Tim Rockwood released the following information.

July 20 Skyler James Barncord, 24, of Shannon, was cited for illegal squealing of tires and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle.

Barncord was released on an I-bond.

July 25 Robert S. Bridges, 43, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, was arrested for driving with a suspended driver’s license, no registration and speeding 46 mph in a 30 mph speed zone and no valid license for a motor cycle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

July 26 Sydney J. Gunder, 20, of Polo, was cited for failure to yield at an intersection. Gunder was released on an I-Bond.

Kassondra A. Bruder, 24, of Polo, was cited for improper use of an electronic device. She was released on an I-Bond.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity July 22 At approximately 11 a.m., deputies responded to an accident in the 7,400 block of North Freeport Road. It was reported that a pipe went through the windshield of a motor vehicle at that location.

After an investigation it was determined that a Chevrolet 2500 utility truck, being driven by Dagoberto Rodriguez, of Rockford, was southbound on Freeport Road with a 20-foot section of plastic culvert on the rack attached to the top of his truck. A Commonwealth Edison truck, being driven by Albert Stobbe, of Marengo, was northbound.

The culvert came off of Rodriguez’s vehicle and hit the Com-Ed vehicle shattering the windshield. Stobbe was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained from the shattered windshield. Rodriguez was issued a citation for an unsecured load.

At approximately 2:48 p.m. Ogle County deputies, along with the Byron Police department, Byron Fire department and Stillman Valley Fire department responded to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of East Illinois 72 and Marrill Road.

After an investigation it was learned

that both vehicles were traveling westbound on Illinois 72. While the motorcycle was coming to a stop, it was rear ended by a silver Acura. An adult female and a minor child were transported to Swedish American Hospital for non life-threatening injuries. Gracey Lovgren, 19, of Stillman Valley, was cited for following too closely.

July 23 Cody Ward, 31, of Davis Junction, was arrested on two outstanding Ogle County warrants for two retail theft. Ward has a bond of $10,000 or 10 percent for each warrant pending a court appearance Richard Huereca, 47, of Rockford was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Huereca bond was set at $1,293 pending a court appearance.

July 24 Ronald Reittinger, 37, of Leaf River, was arrested at 8:20 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while license suspended after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 400 block of East Third Street in Leaf River. Reittinger was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Jacob Freeze, 29, of Farmersburg, Indiana was arrested at 6:28 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 96. Freeze will appear in court on Sept. 3 at 9 a.m.

Melisa Carreno, 34, of Leaf River was arrested at 2:06 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 1,400 block of North Illinois 2. Carreno will appear in court on Aug. 21 at 9 a.m.

Elivis Perry, 32, of Chicago was arrested at 4:09 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 88 at mile marker 76. Perry will appear in court on Aug. 21 at 9 a.m.

Mario Smith, 37, of Madison, Wisconsin was arrested at 10:35 p.m. after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 102. Smith will appear in court on Aug. 21 at 9 a.m.

Cristopher Moscoso, 22, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was arrested at 11:51 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at Illinois 38. Moscoso will appear in court on Aug. 21 at 9 a.m.

Kyle Schultz, 28, of Rock Falls was arrested at 5:57 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 6,000 block of North Freeport Road. Schultz was released on an individual bond with a future court appearance.

Lorenzo Jones, 35, of Rockford was arrested at 12:10 a.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Interstate 39 at mile marker 111. Jones was also issued a citation for improper lane usage. Jones was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Maurice Hart, 25, of Chicago was arrested at 4:49 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 88 at mile marker 75. Hart will appear in court on Aug. 21 at 9 a.m.

Travis Mullen, 35, of Carol Stream was arrested at 7:46 p.m. for driving while license suspended, possession of drug equipment, possession of controlled substance and possession of cannabis unlawful container after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Illinois 64 at Meridian road. Mullen was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Group is hoping for donations of funds and materials

The house will be four bedrooms, one room larger than the one Habitat built last year. That one cost $97,000, and White-Broome said this one is estimated to cost $95,000 thanks to not having to do any demolition on the lot.

“But that depends on the materials we get donated,” White-Broome said.

The Vega family was selected from an application process that began last fall. They were chosen based on need, a willingness to partner

and level of income. The families Habitat partners with help build the home themselves.

Habitat prides itself on its policy of “hands up, not a hand-out.” Those that receive homes make mortgage payments to Habitat. They stay engaged throughout the mortgage and provide counseling on how to pay for and maintain a home.

Those that apply for Habitat homes are usually unable to receive a loan due to credit issues.

“This family’s current living situation was inadequate and unsafe,”

White-Broome said. “They were living with a family member. It was in a basement. There were concerns about if they could get out if there was a fire as well as the condition. There was water and sewage that was coming in. It was very cramped.”

The Vega family’s children range from 8-18 in age.

“They’ve been with that family member for a while,” White-Broome said. “But they need a home of their own.”

The build is on for a new Habitat Home for a Rochelle family.

Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County had to cancel its spring fundraiser due to COVID-19, losing $15,000 in donations, but construction for a new home for the Vega family will begin this summer.

Felix and Tanya Vega and their five children will be the recipients of the home slated to be built at 122 S. 9th St. in Rochelle, by the end of the year. A groundbreaking and land-blessing ceremony was held in June.

“COVID-19 impacted us,” Ogle Habitat Executive Director Vanessa White-Broome said. “We’re really trying to write additional grants to make up for it. We’re hoping for donations of funds and materials.

We’re going to go on with it anyways and hope to get the family in by the end of the year. We need money for materials.”

Habitat is also looking for skilled and unskilled volunteers to help with the project. The lot was donated by Tim Bruns two years ago.

That’s always beneficial. It saves us the cost of the land, which I believe in this case was $5,000$6,000.”

The home will be the 13th that Habitat has built and donated in Ogle County. Excavation is lined up as well as custom concrete for the foundation. The building permit was issued last Friday. Building will
