Office. A passenger. Debra Mckean, 68, of Forreston was transported from the scene by Lanark Ambulance. Mckean was then transferred by helicopter to Mercy hospital in Rockford where she was treated for her injuries and has since been released.

RIVER RESCUES

The Oregon Fire Department has already done more river rescues this year than it did all of last year, Chief Michael Knoup said.

Last Friday afternoon two kayakers had their vessels capsize between the Oregon dam and the Illinois 64 bridge.

One kayaker was able to swim to land and alert fire officials, who rescued the other kayaker and recovered the vessels, Knoup said.

he tried to turn a curve near the intersection and was unable to complete the turn and his motorcycle left the road and overturned, Carroll County Sheriff Ryan Kloepping said in a June 8 press release.

Soltow was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner’s

Isle. Three people were found on an island and one individual was still holding onto the boat going down the river before swimming to another island. The four people were picked up and the boat was recovered.

Neither of the kayOregon Fire Chief akers had life jackets.

Michael Knoup The Sunday boaters did have life jackets, but weren’t wearing them at the time of the accident.

“If you’re navigating the river, please wear life jackets,” Knoup said. “It can be frustrating, especially when they can’t swim. That river has current changes and holes. It can be dangerous. The second group we rescued couldn’t believe how fast their boat tipped over. Things

change quickly and accidents happen fast.”

Knoup said river traffic was heavy this past weekend, heavier than almost all of last year. He believes it may have been due to people being cooped up during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order.

Fire officials were relieved to make the rescues last weekend without injuries.

The search for Kent Dearborn Jr., 33, of Polo, is still ongoing after his boat capsized while he was fishing near the dam on Nov. 20. Knoup said his department is “acting on pertinent information” in the case of Dearborn and has nothing new to act on right now. Regular searches aren’t going on due to not having a point of interest, he said.

“It’s hard for us,” Knoup said. “We finish the job. Always. To not be able to for him is tough on us. We usually make a rescue or a recovery.”

Ken Kaufman says he will miss his patients the most

Shellhaus, a 35-year-employee, echoed that sentiment. “Everyone is really like family to us,” she said.

Patient Jan Elliott-Borota made the drive down to Mt. Morris from Machesney Park to wish Kaufman and his staff a happy retirement.

“I’ve gone to him for 40 years and so did my kids,” she said. “I was still driving down from Machesney

Park to go to him.”

That patient connection was not lost on Kaufman.

“The patients will be what I miss most,” Kaufman said. “Dentistry, I enjoyed it. But any job after 40 years loses its glamour. My love to all my patients.

I was blessed to be able to come back here and start this practice.”

Ken Kaufman initially wanted to get a job at somebody else’s dental practice when he got out of school.

But he couldn’t find anywhere in the area that was hiring, so he decided to open his own practice in his hometown of Mt. Morris.

“I had an instant practice and it’s been that way ever since, Kaufman said. “It was probably the best decision of my life.”

After 42 years, Kaufman made the decision to retire. He sat down and wrote a letter to all of his patients, an exercise he called the “toughest thing I’ve ever had to do.”

Kaufman has had some patients for 35-40 years that are like “family” for him.

He decided a long time ago that he never wanted to make people wait in his waiting room. He always scheduled longer appointments and would spend 15-20 minutes of each one talking about life with his patients.

“Some are lifelong friends I grew up with,” Kaufman said. “I also decided I didn’t need to be in the city making four times as much as I did. I’m so glad I chose where I did. I was so content.”

Unfortunately, Kaufman didn’t exactly get to go out on his own terms. He planned to work for another year or two, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced his hand.

New regulations have come to the dental industry to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Kaufman would have had to replace some of his older equipment such as chairs and flooring in order to make his office easier to sanitize.

He would have had to buy $30,000-$40,000 worth of new equipment to continue operation.

“A lot of enjoyment has been lost to government intervention,” Kaufman said. “I was disappointed to retire. I talked to 100 patients and it’s an emotional situation with the suddenness. They’ve been asking and I never said I planned on it. Facing them was hard.”

Kaufman’s retirement plans simply include relaxing and enjoying life. He has four grandchildren spread across the country that he plans to visit. He and his wife enjoy gardening and yard work and hope to do more of it.

Kaufman said the majority of his patients will stay in the area in Oregon with Dr. Jack Crisham, depending on how many he can absorb.

An in-person retirement wasn’t possible for Kaufman due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions.

He did have a drive-by celebration past his office on June 6.. He’s thankful his wife, Lynn, threw him a 40th anniversary party in recent years that he’ll remember as his real retirement party.

Kaufman along with two longtime staff members, Carolyn Nelson and Terri Shellhaus, sat in the shade in front of the office on W. Lincoln Street as a long string of cars drove by with well-wishes, signs, and gifts.

“I’ve worked for him for 40 years,” said Nelson, a dental assistant. “The hard part will not be seeing everyone anymore.”

County committee says OK to permit for AOP Final decision will depend on state rules in effect for October

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Board’s Executive Committee approved a permit Tuesday for Autumn on Parade to use the courthouse square should organizers decide to go forward with the popular October festival.

The request to use county property is made each year, but this year’s request is complicated with COVID19 causing the cancellation of many community gatherings, including the Ogle County Fair. The executive committee’s one stipulation was that AOP comply with whatever state guidelines there are at the time of the festival which is scheduled for Oct. 3-4 in downtown Oregon.

Executive Committee Member Greg Sparrow said. “I don’t have a problem with it. We don’t have a problem with it if the state allows it.”

AOP President Marseyne Snow spoke via the telephone with the County Facilities Committee earlier in the day and said her board plans to have a meeting at the end of June

and will decide then on whether or not to hold the festival, which would be marking its 50th year in 2020.

The all-volunteer AOP committee has sought advice from the Ogle County Health Department which has strongly indicated that the state could still be in Reopen Illinois Phase 4 at the time and only allow

gatherings of 50 people or less.

“It [the festival] couldn’t happen that way,” Snow said during the facilities meeting. “They didn’t rule out the possibility though.

The Oregon Chamber of Commerce has asked that we not cancel it yet.

Many nonprofits use it as their major fundraiser. But we may have no choice. We need to come to a conclusion by the end of June.”

Snow said AOP usually has more “wheels in motion” by now than it currently does. The committee wants to be careful with spending funds that won’t be able to be recouped if the festival is cancelled.

“We’ll back off if there’s no green light by the end of June,” Snow said.

“If it looks like it’ll be still in phase four, that’ll be our decision.”

Autumn on Parade is held the first full weekend in October with more than 150 vendor booths surrounding the historic Ogle County Courthouse. The popular two-day event also includes a large parade, a food court by local not-for-profits, an Olde English Faire at Stronghold Camp & Retreat Center, car show and tractor show.

The Ogle County Health Department reported one new COVID-19 case on Tuesday, totaling 231. Recoveries of documented cases stand at 192, with four new ones being reported.

The OCHD reported its fourth death in the county June 1. It reported its third on May 27. One of the two was a woman in her 80s, an Illinois Department of Public Health report said.

Ages and locations of the individuals are not being released to protect their privacy.

The IDPH site said Tuesday that there are 143 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley’s zip code, 61084, has nine cases in it according to the IDPH site. Byron’s zip code, 61010, has 14 cases. Davis Junction (61020) has 14 cases.

The zip codes that house Oregon (61061) and Mt. Morris (61054) have 10 and seven cases, respectively.

Polo’s zip code, 61064, has 10 cases in it.

The Obendorf family camps in a tent that was hooked to their car. Betty’s mother is at her “post” cooking on a camp stove while wearing her house dress and large apron.

I started looking for the pictures of our early camping days and they were rather rustic. My father was an outdoor person and his entire life was spent traveling from park to park with various sorts of equipment.

The first picture I pulled out of the camping file showed the family at Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin. I was somewhere in elementary school and the date was probably 1944. My father always used a camera that he could

set and then run around and get in the picture.

Our RV equipment was a tent that was hooked on to the car so some of us may have slept in the car although I simply do not remember.

BLM march rescheduled

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A Black Lives Matter march will now be held in Oregon on Friday, June 12 at the United Methodist Church. Participants are asked to gather at 5 p.m. and the march will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The march was originally scheduled for Tuesday and was moved due to rain in the forecast.

A donation sale will be held as well with proceeds benefiting BLM organizations. People who want to donate items can submit them for sale.

Marches and protests have been held across the county since George Floyd was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis late last month.

Megan Babler, 18, of Mt. Morris is one of the organizers of the march.

“The police department is on board,” Babler said. “I’m a person of color that grew up here. Racism can

be downplayed in our communities.

I think people listen here. They can decide if they want things to change for the world their children will live in.”

Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville said at Tuesday’s city council meeting that he’s been in regular communications with the organizers of the march. The plan is a peaceful march, but Melville said his department is prepared if it isn’t.

“We’ve had a lot of calls from business owners,” Melville said. “I’m not telling them to close down. That’s their choice.”

The organizers plan to march toward Illinois 64 before heading west towards the Subway and then returning to the church. They’ve said they don’t plan to go into the roadway. Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle has told them they aren’t allowed on the county courthouse grass.

We are continuing to stay home but we are finding out what is happening out in the new world from the family.

We have already been warned that buffets out in restaurants are a thing of the past. I assume salad bars come under the same “new normal”.

We love buffets and salad bars so will this really be true?

Then, camping is coming back in a big way. Now I noticed all the advertisements for RVs on TV so I asked what has happened to all the hotels?

Well, came the reply, no one wants to share elevators and breakfasts in those places will no longer be done although some places give you a bag of breakfast.

So big motor homes and luxury RVs are the rage right now and it is difficult to find them to rent for the summer. Mom will be busy cooking for the family in this luxurious RV with a lake in the background.

I have been mulling all this over and I realize that our early traveling days, as a family, was a tad different.

My mother was probably not all that happy cooking over a camp stove placed on a picnic table. As kids though we were happy running around in the woods and dipping our toes in the lake.

I never saw my mother in slacks since that simply was not appropriate for a housewife in that era. I still have her aprons from the past and many times they nearly matched her dress which was always a nice touch.

Our recreation for the day was hiking, wading, and rowing the row boat the park provided. We were never much for swimming, but spent time on the lake in the boat enjoying the scenery.

I do not remember rowing as a child but my father and my sister probably handled that department.

There were no life jackets, but we stayed close to shore and did not go far.

We enjoyed the days at Devil’s Lake and my folks continued to go there as the years went on but their RV had been upgraded to a house trailer by that time.

In 1945 we did a trip to California and that was another experience you will hear about next time.

Heckman’s influence on area is very noticeable Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK In 1890 Wallacee Heckman purchased 200 acres where Lowden Memorial Park is now located.

He was an attorney in Chicago and Business Manager of the University of Chicago. Stronghold Castle, Taft’s Soldier’s Monument, the Oregon Library, Artist Colony, Blackhawk, Governor Lowden, and several other local historical and existing features of Oregon today have their roots in this one man, Wallace Heckman.

Here is a short recap of Wallace Heckman in this area In 1892-93 he built his house located near what is now the entrance to Lowden Park. Later he built an addition designed by Pond and Pond members of the Artist Colony.

In 1898 he invited Lorado Taft and others to establish an Artist Colony on his property overlooking the Rock River. In 1901 electricity was supplied to his mansion crossing Rock River to Margaret Fuller Island supplying his home and the Artist Colony.

In 1911 the Eternal Indian was built on the Heckman Estate. Wallace Heckman died in 1927.

The following occurred after his death: 1943 - Lowden State Park; 1951 - Taft Campus; 1963 - the Illinois Youth Commission for delinquent youths; and the Heckman House demolished in 1966.

Wallace Heckman promoted this area and influenced Frank Lowden and Walter Strong to purchase their estates near Oregon. In 1896 Frank Lowden married Florence Pullman.

Three years later in 1899 they purchased land near Oregon and built

Wallace brought Lowden to Oregon to see this property knowing of Lowden’s interest in farming. Mrs. Lowden in her diary mentions the Heckman’s visiting the Lowden Mansion.

Walter Strong purchased 360 acres from Wallace Heckman in 1928 and the following year held a Thanksgiving dinner at his summer home, Stronghold Castle. He grew up as an orphan and lived at the Chicago YMCA. He worked at odd jobs at the Chicago Daily News Newspaper where his uncle Victor Lawson was publisher.

Following high school, Strong worked at several odd jobs while studying at several colleges including Beloit College.

In 1813 he married Josephine Webster daughter of a wealthy Chicago inventor and tycoon. They had five children raising their family at Winnetka, Ill. on the Chicago’s North Shore.

Working his way up at the Chicago Daily News he became business man-

ager. He purchased the newspaper in 1925.

As an important wealthy newspaper magnate he entered the upper social community which included Walter Heckman a prominate Chicago Attorney and Tower Webster.

Stronghold Castle has a wonderful history. When Walter was working for the Chicago Daily News for $35 dollars

a week, he and his wife were visiting his wife’s summer home north of Oregon sitting on the hillside overlooking Rock River.

So now when I drive through Lowden Park I think of the previous owner Wallace Heckman who brought Lowden to see the Rock River Valley and sold Walter Strong 360 acres where he built Stronghold Castle.

Join us this summer for our virtual summer reading program! Due to COVID-19 constraints the summer reading programs at Oregon Public Library will be a bit different from previous years, but it will go on.

We will be communicating with our participants throughout the summer as this is a new online program and we are creating things as we go. Missions and events will also be activated on READsquared for participation.

POLO LIBRARY Curbside Delivery As of June 1st, we are providng curbside delivery of prearranged orders of materials.

To take advantage of this service, call the library at (815-946-2713 or email library@pololibrary.org at least one business day prior to your desired pick up day, and give us a list of what you’d like (10 item maximum). Pickup will be available according to the following alternating week schedule: June 1-7 - Monday 10-2, Wednesday 3-7, Friday 10-2 June 8-14 - Tuesday 10-2, Thursday 3-7, Saturday 10-2 June 15-21 - Monday 10-2, Wednesday 3-7, Friday 10-2 June 22-27 - Tuesday 10-2, Thursday 3-7, Saturday 10-2 The book drop is available 24/7 for returns. However, further reopening steps are part of a phased plan that is currently in place, which takes into account the safe business practice recommendations of local, state, and national health organizations, area case numbers, and the availability of cleaning and protective supplies.

We ask that you continue to return items, as you are done with them, through the book drop that will continue to be open 24/7.

After items are returned, they will still appear on your account while they are quarantined, then they will be checked back in and backdated to when they were returned.

We are very excited to be able to get books, movies and more out to all of you, and we will communicate any further reopening steps via the library’s website, www.pololibrary.org; Facebook page, Facebook.com/Polo Library; newspaper articles, and the library newsletter.

Curbside Pickup Only Mt. Morris patrons can place holds on Mt. Morris items. There is NO library to library delivery. Neighboring patrons will not be able to place holds on our materials using Encore.

ALL patrons may check out items if they call in or request through email.

This is the same for all libraries not just our neighboring institutions. You may leave a voicemail with your full name, number, and requests if we are unavailable.

There is no fine on previously checked out items. All notices for holds will come from library staff members. PrairieCat has turned off all notifications.

We do not have an option to turn them on for only our library. We call or email all patrons to notify them when to pick up their items. No overdue or bill notices will be sent.

Curbside Pickup will happen during the hours of 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Summer Reading Program!

Summer Reading Program is upon us! Unlike years past we will have no in person programs. Instead we will be using an online resource to track books, provide missions to complete at home, and track rewards. We will have fun rewards for those who reach goals at the end of the summer. This will include Mary Cheatwood dressing up as either a Princess, a Clown, or a Dinosaur if we collectively can read 1700 books! The missions are fun activities to do at home or outdoors that will earn you badges.

Badges will earn raffle tickets for prizes at the end of the summer.

Summer Reading Program This summer we will be using a program called READsquared. You can use

both the website or the app found in most app stores. To register you or your child just follow the steps below.

If using the app: first download the app then enter your library as Mt. Morris Public Library, IL. Click register on the next prompt. If using a web browser: visit mtmorrisreads.readsquared.com then click register at the top right corner of the page.

Once in the app or website you will be guided through registration. Your age will automatically place you in the right group. Create a user name and password that is easy to remember and follow prompts. After you have registered feel free to explore the page! There are places to log books, write reviews, see suggestions, view and complete missions, and even play games.

Birkhead celebrates his 85th birthday

New rules for Chana School sale

Roger Birkhead, of Viola, celebrated his 85th birthday on May 30.

He was a teacher, coach, administor and regional superintendent for 41 years and taught biology in Oregon from 1964 to 1971 where he also Roger Birkhead coached track and football.

He celebrated his birthday with his wife, Rachel Weiss Birkhead and children (from a safe distance due to COVID), Jon and Christine Birkhead Swanson, Lee and Cindi Birkhead Celske, and Brad Birkhead. His eight grandchildren and nine great-grandhildren were also thinking of him on his birthday.

Donations must be received 3 days before June 26-27 fundraiser The Chana School Foundation will have its annual fundraiser to support the 1883 Chana School Museum on Friday, June 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oregon Coliseum.

“Gather your unwanted items to support this event,” said organizer Connie Stauffer.

“Your unwanted item is someone else’s treasure. Oregon will be celebrating a ‘coming out’ event for all the businesses and

“We will have to comply with the health department guidelines for the safety of all, for Phase 4 of recovery, so please note the guidelines for that last week of June for face masks, etc.,” she said.

3. Sale volunteers will not be able to come pick up items this year.

Police chiefs blame staying at home with local increase

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com When the COVID-19 stay-at-home order began, Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville felt his community was “eerily quiet.”

Over the past three weeks, Melville has seen an incline in incidents, most notably domestic violence calls.

“Tempers start to flare and we’ve seen that,” Melville said. “We don’t think it’s a real problem, but they’ve gone up. I’d say it’s double our normal level of domestics.”

Melville said officers have been responding and handling those calls as best they can. Not every call ends in an arrest. Some are verbal disputes, he said.

OPD is operating at full staff with officers well trained to handle domestic disputes, Melville said.

A second officer almost always responds to those types of calls.

Masks are being worn in homes by officers when responding to calls. Some other types of calls are being handled over the phone due to COVID-19 risks, but domestic violence calls are always responded to in person, Melville said.

Forreston Police Chief Mike Boomgarden said not only has there been an uptick in domestic violence calls, but calls in general have been up “300 percent” since the stay-athome order began.

“It’s because they’re cooped up,”

Boomgarden said. “When you’re stuck with people and there’s the early heat, it’s a recipe for problems.”

Boomgarden said his department has a good relationship with HOPE, a domestic violence agency in the county. He said he contacts them right away and puts them in touch with individuals after the first call, rather than waiting until the second or third.

“The advocates can help if people cooperate,” Boomgarden said.

Polo Police Chief Tim Rockwood agreed with Boomgarden’s sentiments about tempers flaring as temperatures rise.

“I think any time there’s a temperature change, the call number goes up,” Rockwood said. “People start going out or partying more. I don’t know off hand what the change has been. It was some arguments or

neighbor complaints.”

Last week, the Ogle County Health Department made a Facebook post that read, “If you are in danger or feel threatened, you can call or text the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline at 877-TO END DV or 877863-6338.

A call to the OCHD for further information on how domestic violence incidents have been impacted during COVID-19 was not returned.

Police chiefs react to George Floyd’s death, protests A single protester took to the Ogle County Courthouse lawn last week in response to the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis black man who died while in police custody.

Anthony Vaclavicek’s sign read “Better policing begins with good cops who speak up,” and “Backed the blue, defended blue, stand with me, George Floyd needs you.”

“He chatted with one of our officers,” Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville said. “He wasn’t negative at all. We support everyone’s right. We’ve all seen that video. All of my guys have. It made me sick.”

Floyd’s arrest and death was recorded on video by a bystander who witnessed the May 25 incident that has sparked nationwide demonstrations and protests across the nation with some turning violent including in nearby towns Freeport, DeKalb and Rockford.

Melville said people have reached out to his department with positive comments, and his officers haven’t been yelled at or confronted.

He said Oregon has a plan if a protest comes to town and that he talks with officers daily about possibilities. OPD has agreements for assistance with the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department and other municipalities. Oregon has everything it’d need, but he doesn’t expect it to happen, Melville said.

“We’re lucky here in Oregon,” Melville said.

“We don’t have racial tensions in our town. I make it a point to do the right thing. That’s what’s frustrating when we get lumped in with bad apples out there. Our guys know they’re out there doing the right thing.”

Officers that get hired in Oregon go through a several-step hiring process with psychological testing. Any hint of racism or excessive force, and that officer would be off the department, Melville said.

Melville said he’s considered reaching out to the community with a statement.

“Do I reach out or make a post?” Melville said.

“It’s hard to craft the right words. Our community outreach happens every day. That’s how we prove who we are. We see so many people getting out on social media. But we’re out there every day. It works.”

Forreston

Forreston Police Chief Mike Boomgarden fielded many calls last week due to the village’s close proximity to Freeport, where protests turned violent.

“We received numerous calls asking what to do and how to react,” Boomgarden said. “Are we in danger? They were all the same question, it just was how they asked it. We beefed up our manpower and we’re prepared.”

There was an attempted burglary at Smokin Gun Worx, located north of town, during the evening of Sunday, May 31, the same night as the Freeport protests. The business buys and sells firearms along with accessories and also houses an indoor shooting range.

Nothing was taken, but a glass door was shat-

tered.

Boomgarden said it was two juveniles, but the investigation is continuing.

“I can’t say it was tied in to [the protests], but I wouldn’t be surprised,” Boomgarden said. “We’d been watching the place but we left for a house fire. Three minutes later they hit it. I missed them by two minutes. We’ve been vigilant.”

Three officers on the Forreston Police Department have been putting in long hours and a spare squad car has been put to use. One officer was called to Freeport to help at the request of Stephenson County.

Boomgarden said he’s constantly in contact with longtime law enforcement acquaintances from multiple counties.

“I get information from them,” Boomgarden said. “It helps to have 44 years experience.”

Polo Polo Police Chief Tim Rockwood said he hasn’t seen any protests or activity, but he has seen an “outpouring of support” for law enforcement.

“They’re letting us know they support us,” Rockwood said. “I think the overall feeling is unrest. Nobody is panicking. They’re alert and paying attention.”

Rockwood said he has a protocol in place in the case of a protest in Polo that would include extra officers. He declined to say more about what that plan would include.

He’s told his officers to assure people they’re here for them and that they’re keeping their eyes open. Community outreach is a priority of Rockwood’s department, and he’d like to do more when possible to get out and speak with citizens.

“We still can’t gather with the virus limitations,” Rockwood said. “We’d like to do something with people.”

Chloe Overstreet joins college’s of board of trustees Stillman Valley native is the first student member to serve on association’s board The Board of Trustees of Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) elected Chloe Overstreet, a student at Eureka College, Eureka, as the board’s first student representative in ACI’s 68-year history.

Overstreet, from Stillman Valley, will begin her junior year at Eureka College this fall, majoring in history and political science, and business administration.

Overstreet was elected May 15 at the ACI Board of Trustees annual meeting, held via video conference. She was nominated by the board’s Trusteeship Committee, which began discussions earlier this year about adding a student representative to further diversify the board, said ACI Executive Director Mick Weltman.

Currently, the board has 37 corporate members, all business leaders, plus the presidents of ACI’s 27 member colleges and universities.

Overstreet is a first-generation college student, who started her college career at Eureka shortly after her father died in a work-related accident.

One reason she chose Eureka is because her college recruiter reached out to Overstreet after the accident and assured her the school would help her, she says.

Once at Eureka, she joined ACI’s Peer Mentoring Program, aimed at helping first-generation college students through their critical first year.

‘The program offered both guidance and financial relief as I was beginning college,” Overstreet wrote in a letter to the board. “Access to emergency funds provided the relief that I needed to start college. It allowed me to focus less on working hours at a part-time job and focus more on my classes.”

As a mentor, she says she has had “an incredible opportunity” to watch classmates grow and

be successful, and she has encouraged other students in the same way that her mentor encouraged her.

Serving as an ACI board member would provide a student perspective and help other students access opportunities that ACI provides, she said.

“Chloe is amazing, amazing student,” said Dr. Jamel SC Wright, Eureka College president and ACI president. “She came in as a first-generation student and immediately engaged with the ACI program. She’s very outgoing, she is collaborative and demonstrates great ethical skills. She really is the true definition and representation of the type of student that we try to support. She is the type of student who leaves our institutions and makes a great and significant difference in the world, lives a fulfilling life and is a lifelong learner.”

Earlier this month, Overstreet recorded a video about her experience at Eureka College and the Peer Mentoring Program for ACI’s annual fundraising event, a virtual event this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Drivers urged slow down for work in I-90/I-39 corridor

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced multiple projects in the Rockford area will be continuing or starting in June and lasting through the 2020 construction season.

The seven projects represent a total investment of more than $65 million for the region, with $42.9 million coming from Gov. JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois capital program.

“Across the nation, highway construction and maintenance continue as essential infrastructure activities. Illinois is no different,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman.

“These projects represent a significant investment in the Rockford area that will improve safety, mobility and create economic opportunity for years to come. Please, slow down and pay extra attention driving in and around any work zone.”

All seven projects are along the Interstate 90/Interstate 39 corridor, between Gardner Street and Baxter Road and between Meridian Road and Shaw Road.

OBITUARIES ROBERT M. ADAMSON Robert M. Adamson, 81, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday June 6, 2020. He was born on June 25, 1938 in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Clayton and Myrtle (Bartlett) Adamson.

He graduated from Monticello High School Class of 1956. Robert married Shirley Brewer on Aug. 28, 2004 at Faith Center Church in Rockford.

He was a hard worker who owned and operated the Sears Catalog Store in Oregon from 1969-1986. He then worked for Goodwill of Northern Illinois for the last 25 years; currently as a business manager and also as a mentor for Goodwill Future Leaders which meant a lot

JANICE RAE (ANDERSON) HOUGH Janice Rae (Anderson) Hough, 69, passed away on Sunday June 7, 2020 in The University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin.

Jan was born on Feb. 21, 1951 in Rochelle, the daughter of Harry and LaVonne (Gaul) Anderson.

She attended Mt. Morris Community Schools and graduated from Mt. Morris High School class of 1969; Sauk Valley Community College, Dixon, and Passavant College of Nursing in Chicago.

Jan married her high school sweetheart and neighbor, Robert (Gerry) Hough III on Aug. 20, 1971 in The Church of the Brethren, Mt. Morris.

She worked at the McGregor Agency in Mt. Morris, then as a telecommunicator and matron for the Mt. Morris Police

Irma I. Pair, 95, of Forreston, passed away peacefully at Pinecrest Manor in Mt. Morris on Monday, June, 8, 2020.

Irma was born to John & Lillian (Hagemann) Buskohl on Jan. 31, 1925 in Leaf

to him; connecting with the young people he served.

He had a strong faith in God and was an involved member of Faith Center Church.

Robert was an avid golfer, fan of Tiger Woods, and was Club Champ at Silver Ridge Golf Course twice. He loved baseball and was a die hard Cubs fan even getting to experience a World Series game with his son which he cherished.

He also played semi professional baseball when he was younger. He was a life long Iowa Hawkeye fan. He loved to read and enjoyed history, war stories,

and was incredibly patriotic.

He will be remembered as a people person who was always willing and wanting to help others in their time of need. But, more than anything he was a family man.

He is survived by his loving wife Shirley of Rockford; children, Parke (Diane) Adamson of Little Rock, Arkansas, Ellen (Ty) Taylor of Oregon, Charone (Stacy) Fuller of Rockford, and Delvary Fuller of Rockford; daughter in law, Michelle Adamson of Peoria; brother, Tom (Sally) Adamson of Fremont, Nebraska; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sons Gregory and Clayton; siblings, Elaine, Grant, Raymond, and Rose; and great grandson, Marcus.

The family would like to thank Northern Illinois Hospice for the loving care they showed Robert.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday June 15 at Faith Center Church in Rockford with Apostle Byrd officiating.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. -12 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

A private burial will follow. A memorial is established in Robert’s name.

She was Grand Parade Co-Chair along-

side her twin sister JoLynn.

She was a member of the Mt. Morris Community Woman’s Club, served on the Mt. Morris Village Board, and she served on several boards and committees at Disciples United Methodist Church, Mt. Morris.

Jan is survived by her husband: Gerry Hough, Mt. Morris; children: Christine (Jason) McCoy, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Rob (Lynnette) Hough IV, Mt. Morris; Rick Hough, Mt. Morris; Josey Hough, Charlotte, North Carolina; grandchildren: Ben and Sam McCoy, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Rebecca and RG Hough V, Mt. Morris; and Peyton Boyd, Mt. Morris; mother: LaVonne Anderson, Mt. Morris; twin sister: JoLynn (Mike) Ward, Mt. Morris; and

A family graveside service will be held on Saturday June 13, at 11 a.m. in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris.

She was active with her husband in various engine clubs throughout the state.

Irma supported her church the West Branch Church in Polo. She would say “Its never Sunday without going to church.”

She spent most her life working in different areas such as Leaf River Schools

as a bus driver and Micro Switch.

Irma is survived by five children Reita Beck of Mt. Morris, Steve (Deb Hamm) Pair of Pecatonica, Norma (George) Steiner of Roscoe, Hope (Dwight) Culler of Leaf River and Tim (Heather) Pair of Sterling.

Mildred M. Smith, 105, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020 in her home with her daughters by her side.

Mildred was born on Sept. 8, 1914 in Rogersville, Tennessee, the daughter of James Q. & Mary (Mallory) Davis. She moved to Mt. Morris in November of 1920.

Mildred graduated from Mt. Morris High School class of 1932. She married Kellar E.

Smith on Oct. 14, 1945 in Mt. Morris and he preceded her in death on May 29, 1990.

Mildred worked as a Nurse Aid for 18 years retiring in 1981. She was a member of The Mt. Morris Church of The Brethren, and VFW Auxiliary.

Mildred is survived by her daughters: Barbara A. (Lenny) Wells, Mt. Morris; Nancy E. (Louis) Piper, Wheatland, Wyoming; and Marlene K. (Barry) Graves, Fletcher, North Carolina;

8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents; husband: Kellar; 3 brothers and 6 sisters.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity June 5 A Peoria man was arrested on multiple traffic violations following a foot chase east of Oregon. Kenneth A. Henry, 32, of Peoria was arrested at 9:50 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license, no valid driver’s license, resisting arrest, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to signal, improper lane usage, failure to wear seatbelt, operation a vehicle with no insurance

and on an outstanding warrant after Ogle County deputies, with the assistance of the Oregon Police Department, conducted a traffic stop in the 6000 block of East Illinois 64.

During the traffic stop, Henry fled on foot and ran into a wooded area in a subdivision east of Oregon, along Illinois 64.

Henry was taken into custody and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Karen Schroeder, 52, of Rochelle was arrested for aggravated fleeing to elude

and driving on a revoked license after deputies attempted to stop her vehicle on Illinois 251 near Dutch Road for speeding.

Schroeder sped away in an attempt to flee and elude deputies. The vehicle stopped on Interstate 39 near mile marker 95 after having mechanical problems.

Schroeder was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

June 6 Teodoro Jimenez-Viveros, 21, was arrested for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic

stop at Freeport Road and Robin Road.

Jimenez-Viveros was also cited for no front registration plate and was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

June 8 Jessica A. Hill, 18, of Stillman Valley was arrested at 7:18 p.m. for battery and disorderly conduct after deputies responded to the Meridian Manor Trailer Park for the report of a disturbance. Hill was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

June 2 Russell L. Squires, 48, of Byron, was issued a citation at 12:43 p.m. for speeding, 57 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. Daysville Road.

June 3 At 9:48 a.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 300 block of W. Washington Street resulting in the arrest of Sandra L. Hessian, 60, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Hessian was

transported to the Ogle County Jail.

June 6 Miguel A. Delcid, 47, of Hanover Park, was issued a citation at 6:35 a.m. for speeding, 54 mph in a 30 mph zone.

This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Connie F. Hermes, 27, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 9:47 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred in the 1000 block of W. Washington Street.

At 11:53 p.m., police responded to a disturbance in the 900 block of S. 4th Street resulting in the arrest of Alyssa N. Ghibellini, 26, of Oregon, for battery, aggravated battery, resisting a peace officer, and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Ghibellini was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Two parking citations and six verbal warning issued from June 1-7.
